Yeah it's all p weird. I wish there more daytime games also, obviously that's more a gripe with football rather than every other bad thing.
Games I'm particularly looking forward to in group phase are Ecuador Germany and Scotland Brazil. Scotland Brazil feels so set up for "a famous night" for Scotland.

i don't remember the schedule being so bad in previous USA and Mexico tournaments, I assume this is another innovation of the moneyball era but maybe my memory's just shit. gonna miss a lot of group games which makes me v sad

It is once again v hard not to think Spain will go all the way. But Argentina to retain may be just as likely. Surely it's time for France to really fuck up again.
Definitely gonna be a bit weird waking up in the morning and checking what happened overnight but also a bit of a relief now it's this big.
Harder than usual to predict a surprise pacakage too - too many contenders and permutations.
Love the idea of Mexico winning not just one knockout game (unless it's v England tho would still rather go out to them than anyone else). Just beating a team of the same or better quality in the knockout would be momentous.
USA look pretty chaotic but the potential to surpass expectations is there.

He’s ready (pending outcome of an MRI).
Although they have no midfield, I think Brazil could do ok this time.
Türkiye could have a good run. Mexico v South Africa has potential to be a great opener.
― ShariVari, Sunday, 7 June 2026 21:12 (one week ago)
Not expecting it to be as even as their 2010 opener really but will admit I'm probably under-rating all the African sides (tho on their current form Panama could beat Ghana) and will be glad to be wrong.

― Sgt. Biscuits, Sunday, 7 June 2026 21:26 (one week ago)
I have invested a choice £20 on an accumulator on all the games against teams like Qatar, Curacao and New Zealand that could earn me a couple grand. Of course upsets happen but some of the disparities in quality seem massive.
― a hoy hoy, Sunday, 7 June 2026 21:47 (one week ago)
one of the best bits of a World Cup is when those disparities suddenly evaporate tbh

Kind of want to see chaos on par with the French Open men's tennis championships. We are surely guaranteed that in the US, but also what the heat (or heavy rains?!) will bring to the competition.
Must be awesome if your country is playing in Canada (or especially) Mexico.
And yeah like many I am sad not to be able to watch every single game.
Really want to see a new winner.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 8 June 2026 12:20 (one week ago)
Reading some of the previews.
In The Guardian there is this weird bit on "What to expect from Fans" and reads stupid
What to expect from the fansCzech supporters are unlikely to travel in big numbers in the same way as, say, England, Argentina or Mexico, but those who do are usually passionate, loud and heavily beer-fuelled (but not in a violent way). They traditionally sing simple chants such as “Cesi do toho!” (“Come on, Czechs!”) and create a friendly atmosphere mixed with self-deprecation and dark humour. Violence is very rare around the national team compared with club football. Just reaching the World Cup was worthy of heavy celebration and not many fans will have the financial resources to travel to the US and Mexico. The ones who make it, though, will not be quiet.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 8 June 2026 12:41 (one week ago)
I was in Prague during the 2004 Euros (where they were briefly favourites) and this does not ring true at all, sadly the national team shared the support of the racist skinheads with Sparta.
― Roy Ouroboroson (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 8 June 2026 12:51 (one week ago)
Relationship with the US/TrumpIn his first term as president, Trump often talked about Korea. His pursuit of a Nobel peace prize made him surprisingly amicable toward the then-leaders of the North and South, earning him a peculiar brand of popularity in Seoul. His second term, however, has struck a different chord. A public once intrigued is now fatigued by a tenure defined by tariffs and erratic foreign policy. Reports suggesting his administration pushed for Italy to replace Iran in the World Cup have only cemented his image as a reckless disruptor in the eyes of the Korean public
There is also this bit where every country's relationship with the Trump admin is evaluated.
xp yeah I am sure there will be many funniest/inaccuracies

What has happened at the #2026WorldCup over the last 48 hours:• Swiss footballer Embolo's visa was put under review and he was only able to join his team days later.• Iraqi national team player Aymen Hussein was held for questioning for nearly 7 hours upon entering the United States.• The Iranian national team spent days dealing with visa procedures at the U.S. Consulate in Türkiye. The U.S. only allowed them entry on match days. Fifteen members of the delegation were denied visas.• Omar Abdulkadir Artan, named CAF's Best African Referee of 2025, was denied a visa. Despite travelling to the U.S. with a diplomatic passport, he was refused entry and sent back. FIFA announced that he will not be able to officiate at the tournament.• The South African national team arrived in the United States much later than planned because part of the delegation was not granted visas.• Members of the Senegal national team staff were forced to remove their shoes and subjected to lengthy searches, sparking accusations of racism.• The Uzbekistan national team was searched with bomb-sniffing dogs and the footage went viral in international media.• Some Scottish supporters, despite being eligible to enter the U.S. visa-free under the ESTA programme, had their travel authorisations revoked just days before departure.• Many supporters who had already bought tickets and booked accommodation had their visa applications rejected, resulting in financial losses.

there's been some weird journalism from the BBC the last few days as football reporters are apparently discovering for the first time that
- football is a team sport- you can only have 11 people in a team at the same time
pundits explaining this to their audience like they've discovered some arcane and puzzling mystery
― 99 gram lychee (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 June 2026 07:24 (six days ago)
The coverage is so patronising, like I feel they deeply underestimate the knowledge and intelligence of their audience, even accepting that it's a wide range of people and interest levels.

I think the coverage is probably worse for big tournaments for several reasons including an assumption about the audience being more casual, but I'm hearing this during standard football reporting, incredulously questioning Tuchel on why his 15 starters aren't all starting etc

How do you stage a tournament while attacking the very basis of its existence, morally and also physically? Welcome to our celebration of openness and international friendship, which we hate! All visitors are welcome here, except the ones we arbitrarily throw into prison, which probably won’t be you, but maybe! Please write your credit card number on this form. Perhaps you still regard sporting spectacle as your cherished escape from politics. In which case enjoy your World Cup of games split into four quarters, decimated by heat and exhaustion, compromised by an unfair qualification process. Enjoy your largely meaningless group stage, the thousands of empty seats, the masked police standing guard just at the edge of shot, the long lingering shots of Infantino and JD Vance in the stands.

― ||||||||, Thursday, 11 June 2026 20:23 (five days ago)
I get why they have this refreshment break with all these hot stadiums with no AC and great opportunity for more adverts, but why don't they stop the clock?
― Here is the mentioned donkey, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 11 June 2026 20:25 (five days ago)
The reason they're not effective is that the punishments are all football-specific. Goalie takes more than 9 seconds to take goal kick, automatic corner for other team? Goalie don't care.
Goalie gets smacked in the face with a sock with a padlock in it? Now the game is moving

Fucking camera cuts to Infantino occasionally. Bring back Salma Hayek at least.
― nashwan, Thursday, 11 June 2026 20:27 (five days ago)
why don't they stop the clock?
If they don't stop it for other play stoppages like injuries, why would they do it here?
Typically stoppage time is inflated anyway in matches with drink breaks and we remember how egregious the stoppage was last WC
― If your ass is a Bible, 213 will regulate (Neanderthal), Thursday, 11 June 2026 20:27 (five days ago)
there was only a few minutes of stoppage time in the first half, despite the refreshment break

Trying to work out what the nadir will be, atmosphere-wise. Got to take into account hot weather, difficult-to-reach stadiums, both sets of fans facing travel difficulties with USA visas, etc.
At a glance, Jordan vs Algeria at Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara on June 22nd looks particularly grim.

one thing i remember from 94 is a US entrepreneur who was planning to make several changes to the game to get more interest in the sport, including marked zones so you got one point for a goal from the box up to four points for a goal from over the halfway line

― Here is the mentioned donkey, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 11 June 2026 21:26 (five days ago)
Funniest thing is there are a bunch of footie-specific stadiums in America because Don Garber requires most MLS teams build them to get a franchise, but most of them only hold 20,000 - 30,000, so most of the stadiums hosting games in the US are American football stadiums that don't actually have association football teams playing in them (Atlanta one exception)

Balogun was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Nigerian parents.[7] His parents were living in London, but visited New York when his mother was seven months pregnant. However, on their intended return flight, airline staff refused his mother permission to fly due to safety concerns over her being too heavily pregnant at that time, and he was therefore born in New York

― 99 gram lychee (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 13 June 2026 13:40 (three days ago)
Technically the first game is being played at 12 pm in the city that it's being played in (which is 3 pm my time).
Not sure why they didn't just host the early game on the East Coast so it could start earlier. West coasters by now are used to waking up early to watch national sports events on TV

Haiti lost 5-1 to Curacao and 3-0 to Honduras in the last year, their wins usually come against the likes of New Zealand/Nicaragua type squads (other than the one they squeaked out over Costa Rica).
It'll probably be low scoring because they'll basically have 10 in the box for 90 minutes.
Oh now I've thoroughly jinxed Scotland :(

― ||||||||, Saturday, 13 June 2026 14:38 (three days ago)

― ShariVari, Saturday, 13 June 2026 14:44 (three days ago)
BBC also maddeningly inconsistent about where they list the overnight fixtures, like they've got the USA Paraguay game listed after two matches from today that haven't happened yet, then Haiti-Scotland is listed with like, a normal understanding of linear time
― Sgt. Biscuits, Saturday, 13 June 2026 14:45 (three days ago)

or 2am
― ||||||||, Saturday, 13 June 2026 14:52 (three days ago)
the bbc listing thing was pissing me off too (also confusing me because I am bad at clocks)
It'll probably be low scoring because they'll basically have 10 in the box for 90 minutes
And because Clarke will probably play one forward and that'll be Che Adams.
― Tom D, focussed with getting on with the job (Tom D.), Saturday, 13 June 2026 15:12 (three days ago)
The US being a sprawling landmass with 3 time zones didn't help matters. For example, a 5 pm kick in London would be a 9 am kickoff in California (noon on the East Coast) which would mean empty stadium with their godawful traffic (traffic is why the stadium took a while to fill up last night in the US match).
The frequent abnormally large gap between matches and the huge inconsistency in the schedule is frustrating. I'm still of the opinion that the tourney should have been taken away from the US and held only in Canada/Mexico once Trump got re-elected

Swiss shirt is good imo. Colours very slightly reminiscent of the Nigeria 2010 all-timer. Croatia home is an abomination from the shirts I’ve seen so far. Got my daughter the much-praised Scotland away top and it is pretty nice.

Literally dozed off for the first 15 minutes of the second half of the Scotland game but I don't imagine I missed much. Scoring a scrappy goal and then resorting to Clarkeball for those parts of the second half I was awake for, against a team that's won 4 out of their last 14 games? Wha's like us! In 1974, we were pleased with a cautious 2-0 victory in an opening game against Zaire, as they were then called, only for Zaire to lose 9-0 in their next match against Yugoslavia, as they were then called. Coincidentally Brazil were in the same group and we went out on goal difference. I think we need a draw really against either Brazil or Morocco because our goal difference is going to nosedive when we're at the end of a hiding from either Brazil or Morocco. McTominay is useless unless he's pushed further forward, by the way. Gunn is useless full stop. Hanley and Hendry did well against some lumbering Haitian strikers but then that was against some lumbering Haitian strikers. I'm off to wipe this saltire off my face.

Yeah, definitely. Both teams playing to their strengths. Very cerebral. I will say the Japanese players look very short and physically weak next to the Dutch players. They’ll need to continue their compact formation and their quick passes if they want to get ahead of them or beat them at a pass…or a Dutch mistake!

Japan have come up with some good results against European teams
Have a sneaking suspicion the main reason they're getting talked up in the British media is because they beat England at Wembley.

Shame about Ecuador, looked like a good game. All my secondary South American teams are failing so far :-(
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 15 June 2026 06:55 (yesterday)
I know they did but I never heard any talk about them being "dark horses" or a team to watch until recently and I'm not convinced this Japanese side is notably better than past Japanese sides, they've had good teams for 30 years.

VAR ref is in the heat for what is supposed to be a white supremacy dog whistle. The dog whistle itself is making a circle with your finger and thumb below your waist. I didn't know that was a racist thing. In my school and even with a few people i've known since school, i thought that was some sort of thing where if someone caught you looking at it, they could give you a punch in the arm. But I guess of course a jokey school yard dumb thing that ends up in a punch is something racists love.
Just gotta reset the count, 0 days since racists ruined another thing you wouldn't have expected.

The one from the looping header was good, the one low to his right that he held I thought he did fairly well to get down so quickly and not palm it out, there is a certain value to dependable making all of your fairly routine saves from successive half chances in a way that emboldens your defense
