I'm lazy, plus I've managed to keep a low enough profile here, that I've mostly avoided any long-term grudges.

I take a lot of pleasure in randomly swooping into threads just to post an obnoxious comment that only I find humorous.

I look forward to the 77 albums countdown each year because it largely shapes what I listen to for the next 12 months.

I've taken much pleasure in the growing acceptance, and outright celebration of Rush and Steely Dan when they were objects of derision for most of my life. I imagine I may be waiting a long time for the Frank Zappa rehabilitation though....

Mainly I like reading the general opinions on movies and the basketball chat.

Also the album / single music countdown polls influence a good chunk of what I listen to for the next year since I feel like I don't have the time to sift through a lot of new music myself these days.

I've taken a break from ilx this week, mostly because I've had a lot on between work and real life committments, and the thing that pulls me back is the wealth of recommendations to be found on eg the sprawling balearic revival thread. There's a lot of great music I would never have heard if it wasn't for the rolling threads too. Also some of you are very insightful and verbose when talking about music and it's a pleasure to read, in particulr there's a lot of BradNelson threads where the music isn't for me but the passion makes me curious enough to investigate. Starting any thread on ILM is an attempt to shape a conversation and it doesn't always work but it's not like I don't share things on social media to silence either.

It is a place where thoughts are welcomed and there are many thoughtful, funny and accomplished people. It is generally pretty easy to dance away from the parts of ilx I find uninteresting or unlikeable. nb: I don't think I've opened a thread on ilm for at least two years.

one bad thing about having four trillion bookmarks is that i sometimes totally overlook new threads with a bunch of activity like this.

things would be better with about 800-1000% more mookie posts on non-ILB threads. although mookie would be expected to continue contributing to those, too, of course. it's a lot of work to be on ilx!

i don't leave ILX good for many of the reasons expressed above, plus the more personal reason that if i didn't talk with people here, i'd barely be talking with people at all. hopefully that won't always be the case, but for now it's very nice to have somewhere to share thoughts and learn a bit from people.

i've had two purposeful leave events. one was when ilx poster Bob (or was it something similar? Ron? Dad?) said that something i said was completely wrong and implied that i was dumb and i flipped out for about a week and then returned as karl malone. the other was earlier this year when i flipped out in general and deleted everything i could, everywhere. i think i returned like a day and a half later and i can't remember if i even mentioned that i was trying to achieve self-exilement.

the zep poll made me lol at myself clemenza-style but OL turned the thread into what it became, attribution is fair

even if ILX is past its prime (or worse), it's still the only discussion forum I know of with such a broad scope of topics and lots of intelligent interesting posters, with a clean, lowfi interface. what's the closest thing out there? the well? I have no idea tbh

would be good if people stopped sharing the sort of shite that would earn a muting or a 'turn off retweets' on twitter

I check the development of discussions across a handful of threads as if it's really very important I stay on top of things (like project emails from clients or something), and yet I barely engage.
