The boyfriend and I have made the decision to piss our holiday break away with a new game system. But which one? We are leaning toward XBox because his lil'bro has one and we can swap games, plus they have that game where you kill Saddam and we think it would be ace to sit in American flag PJs and triumph over evil.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

F-that, PS2!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2...a (bad-ASS) game system & a DVD player!

Since I purchased mine, my ass has grown in lateral girth exponentially, and I've developed the worst case of carpel tunnel syndrome since the cat's-cradle tournament.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

X-box is overrated and its Microsoft!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

X-Box is NOT overrated! It has a hard drive! It's a bazillion times faster! The controllers are the size of my head! And _Halo_!!!!

But, then, GameCube has _Metroid Prime_, and is more funny fun. PS2 & XBox are consoles for "serious" gamers.

Those promos for _Operation: Desert Storm_ make me feel dirty. Why I don't get the same feeling when I see promos for a WWII-type game, I dunno. I think I prefer the enemy to be a faceless foreign stereotype, or some faceless home-grown group of radicals - that shot of Saddam in the crosshairs gives me chills.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm such a paranoid conspiracy-theory-retard I've honestly had thoughts that they'd somehow wired the Desert Storm game in such a way that, while we're at home innocently gaming, we're ACTUALLY controlling some robot-drone-death-machine tearing it up in Iraq.

Okay, so it was when I was REAL high, whatever.

And I might buy a GameCube just for Metroid: Prime. I'm that dorky.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

X-Box has The Green Screen of Death. PS2 also has an option for a harddrive, they just don't make it yet [last time I was at Best Buy]. I'm very happy with my PS2 myself. GTA3/VC, Solid Snake and GT-Aspec make me a very lazy bastard.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

You're real decision is, essentially:

Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Zelda

vs.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2, GTA4: Vice City, MGS 2

vs.

Halo.

Essentially, the latest cadre of consoles are pretty exciting when it comes to potential, and looking under the hood, but the games that have come out so far are pretty sparse. Those are the 9-10 out of 10 games available for each console. Personally, I'm a franchise whore and also have grown up with Ninty so I would go for that. Halo is phenomenal but then you complete and you turn round and realise 'Oh no! There are no other games for this console' but I mean, what a game it is. PS2 well if you can handle all the ideological bullshittyness it has going for it and you want the second best football game ever made (probly the best VIABLE game made available at the moment) and some crazy ass not-as-good-as-it-shoulda-been neckbreakin action and probly contender for the Nation's Pulse is throbbing to the sounds of you game then go for PS2. GTA4 will keep YOU occupied but yr friends, look, they're sleeping.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

There's also price, what are they retailing at? (To be perfectly honest, if I were you, or rather if you were a GAMER, I'd buy a second hand one AND try pick up a fully loaded SNES or N64 off E-Bay).

Try for SNES:

Super Mario World, err, search the archives here for the SNES thread.

For N64:

2 Zeldas, F-Zero, ISS98, Mario, Goldeneye (though if you get a new gen console and you like Goldeneye then Timesplitters 2 might be to yr fancy), and a host of other great games.

Avoid: Gran Turismo of any description.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

N64=the console with one good game. Gran Turismo=classic

david=well known lunatic when it comes to video games.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

You say that to my face, FITZY!

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just remembered. Instead of a SNES you could buy a Gameboy advance but you'd be better with a SNES (bigger library of games, suits your veggin out needs), whatever.

re N64: What game, ronan?

GT = booooooooooooooooring.

haha, guess what I'm getting for christmas, ronan.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

GBA is kinda crap, I wish I'd spent the money I spent on mine on beer cds and clubbing like all my other money, what a stupid mule I was.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

P2 + Tony Hawk 4 = a very pale nick with sore thumbs

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

tony hawks 4 = k-cool.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hitman 2 for PS2 is my latest rental. Fucking ace, but hard as hell.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2 has the Op. Desert Storm game as well Teeny.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, another consideration = pad ergonomics. GC has best pad; yr getting RSI from the X-Box's Hippo-pad; the PS2 = the Ford Escort, dependable, standard shape, a bit more fancy now than it used to be, boring.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh excellent chris. I hope everyone understands that we're sitting in our jammies ironically. The boyfriend thinks it will be funny to look back on in ten years. He likes 1st-person shooters a lot but I like mario-style walkabout and do things games. He is a boy, I am a girl, can I make it any more obvious?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

you can get both on ps2, believe me its the only way i get my wife to tolerate video games.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

gawd I want them all now. But I forgot PS2 is Sony, and I've loved all my Sony products so now leaning that way. Give me more arguing please!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 13 December 2002 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

hitman 2 is bullshit...i enjoy a good stealth game and all the strategy it entails but playing 20 levels attempting to fire a max of 1 or 2 bullets each stage is sucking the goddamn life out of me...fuck this game...a waste of my time and money

--, Friday, 13 December 2002 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2 - good selection of games, (esp GTA Vice City, which is just awesome), but pricy add-ons (mem cards are over £20)

X-Box - Better spec, but lacks games. also has hard drive and better DVD capability (apparently). and yes Halo is very good. (Top offer at the moment in GAME and Toys'r'us, £200 inc 4 very good games)

Game cube - if you like Zelda & Mario then yes by all means it will be superb. But no DVD, and like SEGA will prob just produce 1 good game every year. (having said that I may just buy one for Zelda alone, as it looks fantastic)

GBA - ok, like a mini SNES and you can buy the original Super Mario games, Yoshi's Island is also great. Although everyones complaining about how you can't see the screen very well, I don't see it as a major problem.

I only have a PS2 and GBA, but I'll be buying the other two soon as they all have fecking ace games.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 13 December 2002 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know why my PS2 refuses to play DVDs in the correct aspect ratio (widescreen films are stretched vertically to fill the screen)?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 09:39 (twenty-three years ago)

You can change the way the picture is displayed. Look at the manual, or press Select and muck about.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 13 December 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

your right about Hitman 2, I played for 4 hours last night and got no where . fuck this game.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

You can change the way the picture is displayed. Look at the manual, or press Select and muck about.

Yeah, that didn't seem to work. It won't let me switch the screen size setting.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Which ones have the decent Rallye and Formula 1 games? I'm leaning Nintendo otherwise.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2 has the best of all.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I have heard rumors the Gamecube might be discontinued pretty soon, not so sure it would be a great investment.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Hitman 2 is incredible. Lots of depth, and the quality of the AI puts GTA: Vice City to shame. And it's not *that* hard. Try The Getaway if you want to see a real tough game.

Jason J, Friday, 13 December 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a GameCube. It sucks. Metroid Prime isn't even all that good--I'd much rather play Halo. If I could go back in time, assassinate the past-me that was about to purchase the GameCube and take his place (causing no doubt all kinds of spacetime wackiness), I'd buy an XBox. Then I'd buy that Buffy game.

adam (adam), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Dreamcast! It has lots of good games and you can get them super cheap online. It's a dead system though, so nothing new again, ever.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Other good X-Box games - Tom Clancy's Secret Ops (from 1st hand experience), Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon (from word of mouth). That's THREE! I am eagerly awaiting the newest version of EA's NHL. I also eagerly await the development of a baseball game that will not bore me to death or cause my controller to make boom-boom with neighboring pieces of furniture. (Bring back Baseball Stars!!)

I also like X-Box Live, simply because you can talk to other people while playing and disguise your voice! The idea of talking a blue streak while sounding like a kid makes me laugh.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

All-Star Baseball 2003 for PS2 is a great game. Wasted my whole summer.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

EA NHL 2003, is not much of an improvement over 2002. Weak offseason remains and the graphics are exactly the same. Takes a lot of tweaking to get it the way you want it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus, if you're a RPG fan, the PS2 is your lord and master. It also has Rez and Ico, in their individual ways flawless games which the others can't match. Second place goes to Gamecube: Mario, Starfox, maybe Metroid, and Legend of Zelda, which I am counting the days until. There are a lot of days. Xbox has Halo, Splinter Cell (except there's no way I'm playing a game that right-wing) and the oft-forgotten Jet Set Radio Future.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, you do have to ignore the Cold-War-glory-days tone in playing stuff like Splinter Cell - it IS endorsed by Tom Clancy, after all. But, hell, the thrill of the kill surely supercedes any need for open-minded political correctness, yes? Of course it does!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew sums up the problem of the Gamecube in 7 words: "which I am counting the days until". Sadly.

dwh (dwh), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I have only played PS2 but I liked it a great deal. GTA is a marvel, of course, and there is a grebt street basketball game as well. My only complaint: My favorite games are alla the James Bond games, and in Agent Under Fire, one cannot play the multiplayer missions against AI opponents. Does anyone know if the new Bond for PS2 corrects this unfortunate problem?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

well, it depends on the games you like. If you like fun/silly games, gamecube is best. If you like "serious" games with more realistic action, PS2 or Xbox. If you like sports games they are all pretty much equal as i think the EA titles are avaiable for all of them. Personally I like the fun/silly stuff, mario and all that, so I got a GC, plus i think it is the best when it comes to simultaneous multiplayer games. Nintendo has been a bit slow releasing some of their proprietary games but it seems to be picking up a bit with metroid out and zelda out in japan, and a bunch of other titles have been announced. also, seems like it has taken developers a little longer to get going on the GC platform (I believe Splinter Cell is coming out on GC in march or thereabouts for example). But basically, if you do some research, there are plenty of good games for all 3 systems. Also, the GC does not double as a DVD player, but I already had a DVD player anyway so it's no big deal...it's also the least expensive for the basic system.

g (graysonlane), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

NHL2K3 by Sega blows EA's NHL 2003 out of the water. I've always bought EA's hockey games, but this year I played both and Sega's game is just far more realistic and far more fun. EA has flashier graphics, but thats about it. Also, World Series Baseball for Xbox is great.

Very happy with my xbox...

KV, Saturday, 14 December 2002 06:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Giving the problems I have had with my lifestyle, there might well be a case for getting rid of the PS2 (and the N64, and the Dreamcast, and the PlayStation), and getting a GameCube, if they can guarantee only releasing two great and replayable games per year.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 14 December 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

jason j: comparing hitman2 and gta:vc is ridiculous...they're not even the same genre or style of gameplay...maybe you should be comparing hitman2 with metal gear solid...hitman 2 has an incredibly weak storyline and just cos the ai is clever doesn't mean the game isn't boring...

by the way gta:vc is genius...it takes gta3 and bumps everything else up a notch and does it perfectly...hopefully the next step to take the gta franchise to another level is rockstar games making it an mmorpg with people working together as a gang, staking territory, turf/gang wars, and the like...

--, Saturday, 14 December 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think comparing GTA:VC and Hitman 2 is 'ridiculous' - at the end of the day they're both third-person shooters. I admit, there are many differences in the manner they're pitched: Hitman 2 rewards skilful stealthiness, while GTA:VC rewards skilful all-out violence. But I'd played the previous GTA through to the end, and I didn't find Vice City brought much that was new. Didn't hate it, by any means... but I thought bits of it were shoddy and overambitious, and I was bored of it in two weeks.

I've kept going back to Hitman 2, though. It's got a level of subtlety that I don't find in many Playstation games. Some might find that boring, but I found it added depth: you can play missions over and over, finding new routes every time. And although the actual killing is measured, when it does all kick off, I found this rarity magnified the excitement: a glimpse of stocking is shocking, and all that.

For the record, I hated Metal Gear Solid. Oh well, takes all sorts

Jason J, Sunday, 15 December 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

No it doesn't Jason, Metal Gear Solid is rubbish. Buy a DVD if you want to watch a film.

I loved GTA3 but Vice City, while brilliant, seems a bit untested, some of the missions are too easy and some of them are back-to-the-shop rock hard. I will pay good money to anyone willing to shoot out all the windows in the mall for me. Hitman 2 is seriously tempting me, I've read many good things about it. Also has anyone got The Getaway? The demo's excellent, swearing, shooting and driving through a meticulously recreated London.

The Gameboy Advance is useless for those of us with a SNES plus Zelda and Yoshi but extremely essential otherwise. Also I'll be buying a Gamecube when the new Zelda comes out - have you played Super Monkey Ball? Oh yes.

Mike (mratford), Sunday, 15 December 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

THANK GOD someone mention Jet Set Radio Future! This game is the SOLE reason I want an XBox. (No, I don't care about MGS, GTA or Halo.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend got Gamecube and regretted it. There have been maybe a grand total of 3 interesting games to come out for it. I vowed never to buy nintendo again after N64's shitty games.

All the complaint's made against X-Box make no sense. "It's too big!" SO? It's not like you're going to be using it as a javalon. "The controller is too big!" Uh... I've used it. Unless you have comically small doll hands, no it's not.

That said, PS2 is the best. I mean, GTA 3: Vice City? You will not beat that.

David Allen, Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

PS - When I said "Special Ops", I MEANT "Ghost Recon", obviously.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 16 December 2002 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

what do you do with a javalon??

Aaron A., Monday, 16 December 2002 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I spent bits of yesterday watching movies of the just-released-in-Japan Zelda. I am very much wanting to have this game's babies.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 16 December 2002 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

whimper. i got my mum's xmas pressie to me yesterday. i KNOW it's starfox, but i am NOT going to open it. like a good boy. plus i still haven't got the homing cluster missiles to make revenge of the empire level easy.

after N64's shitty games MENTALIST

Alan (Alan), Monday, 16 December 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I've jinxed myself. Saturday morning I wanted to fire up the WWF Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth before the wife got up. I put the game in turned on the PS2 and it didn't read the disc. Tried all my games and soem DVD's didn't work. Looked up some info on line and it turns out the laser is burnt out. Luckily Sony will fix it for nothing. Sent it off Saturday morning.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 16 December 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I just bought a xbox. Splinter Cell is simply amazing, the use of light in that game is out of control- it's a great stealth game. Also, there's Shenmue II, Morrowind (a totally non-linear RPG, you can literally go anywhere and do anything and be anyone), Ghost Recon and giant fighting robot games.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
I got an XBox last week. It's great. I only have the disc that comes with it, with Sega GT2002 (boring) and Jet Set Radio Future, which is AWESOME. It's like Tony Hawk and anime and dancing robots and really annoying music all together. Also the controller has around 300 buttons all in inaccessible places that intimidate my loserish PS2-playing friends.

Next I will get Halo, Morrowind and perhaps if I am feeling G Gordon Liddyish, Splinter Cell.

adam (adam), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
Wise from your gwave!

I will be ending a 4 year long self-imposed videogame blackout this month after completing my BS. Has anything changed on the console war front? I'm leaning toward PS2 or Gamecube.

Dale the Merciless (cprek), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2 is now the biggest bang for your buck, easily. Plus Xenosaga is coming out soon. DROOL SLOBBER SLOBBER oh wait I just bought a region free DVD player for $60. Nevermind.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

The Gamecube I've seen on sale for $150 PLUS your choice of Zelda, Metroid Prime, or Mario Party 4!!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

get an XBox

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I played that new Zelda game recently. It was pretty fun, though a little slow, and afterwards I couldn't walk straight for about two days.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I just downloaded Wario Ware Inc for the gameboy-advance [emulator] and its super fun. and i think they sell the thing where you can play GBA games on a Gamecube now? that seems handy

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 9 June 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

ps2 b/c you can m0d them, enabling you to become PIRATES. Yarrr!

GTA:VC and MGS2 while both incredibly experiences will, if you're anything like me, burn out and fizzle simply because they're so addictive and you play it for weeks/months on end.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 9 June 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I just bought a region free DVD player for $60.

Details? That's a good deal!

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 9 June 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

May 30th: Argonaut cans Malice and Orchid for the XBOX, as they had interesting female progatonists, and so were not a good match for the target market.

Hahahahaha.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 9 June 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

My Gamecube has conked out, and I don't the receipt! Bollocks! :(

At least I still have my trusty old GBA and Pokemon Sapphire.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 9 June 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

nicole: go to http://www.pcconnection.com/ and search for "Yamakawa"

Millar (Millar), Monday, 9 June 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW, we never got any system. But the b/f also did very well this semester, so I'm thinking that was no coincidence.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 June 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

hands up who ctrl+f'd "gamecube" so they could laugh at the unfortunate idiots who got one

webber (webber), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

hey! i like the gamecube. it has cuter games. like super monkey ball... worse than heroin.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 02:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Millar, that's a great deal.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

They are all shit, except PES2.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Webber, I ctrl+f'd "gamecube" so I could laugh at the unfortunate idiots who don't "get it". Metroid Prime, Zelda and the Super Monkey Ball series are the best games available for any current generation machine.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I tht Metroid Prime was really rubbish actually and large swathes of the later bits of Zelda were really dull / laborious but it is a superb game still. And Super Monkey Ball is amazing as Ico / Rez.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

xbox the coolest systems ever made people say that it sucks and that it has to many buttons but when i figured out that xbox had 16 buttons ps2 had the same amount of buttons has the xbox i went on this internet xbox vs ps2 vs gamecube.com the resaults gamecube in third with 1.3 million sold 2nd place with 1.4 million is ps2 1st place you know now xbox with 1.5 million sold s if you think xbox sucks and doesnt sell much go on that internet.XBOX IS THE BEST WITH HALO 1 AND 2

Timothy Burrola, Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like X-Box the best. Probably because of the hard drive and the slight edge in graphics. Plus Halo.

I still have a Gamecube because Metroid Prime is the shit.

PS2's alright, the only real advantage it has is the variety of games for it.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 17 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a GC and X-Box. I'd say get an X Box.
You can get SNES, Genesis, NES and arcade machine emulators on it and the DVD player is very good quality.

mei (mei), Sunday, 18 April 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

X-BOX is shit grown ups machine. If you get it I'm going to spitonyourfuckingasshateyoueatshitetc. GC has got good games but not enough as fucking PS2. Get PS2 or die Vitch!yes I typed Vitch!

zenome kistachion, Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It would seem that this is what being the first link in Google for "Playstation 2 vs. XBox vs. Gamecube" will get us. Also, blimey!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep my PS2 around for the possibility of new Gran Turismos and GTAs. Other than that, I've seen no reason to use anything but the X-Box (I only play sports games).

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

At home we have all three, and the Xbox is by far the most used system in the house.

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have thought that all six combinations would be as likely. I can't think of any reason why there are ten times as many instances of the two that start XBox.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

What's a GameCube?

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, X-Box is the newest and most powerful so people are more likely to put it first. Playstation 2 would probably be almost as common, if not more so (given its overall penetration) but fot the fact that many people shorten it to PS2 or PS/2.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ps2 vs. XBox vs. Gamecube" = 264 results
"Ps2 vs. gamecube vs. x-box" = 189 results

I can't be arsed to go through the permutations with 'x-box' rather than 'xbox'.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(mistake - the 189 results was with the x-box hyphen. It's 106 without.)

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The shortening is a red herring, since it's the same abbreviation for each permutation. "XBox vs. Ps2 vs. Gamecube" gets 2640 hits, for example. And the novelty of the XBox has worn off by now. I don't know that when people try to list major consoles, they're 10 times more likely to think of Xbox than PS2.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(if one of the six was more popular, I'd happily put it down to good old-fashioned plagiarism)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Consider the facts:

- PS2 has 43287563486523495743629 games, many of which are very good
- Xbox has (43287563486523495743629*0.37) games, many of which are very good
- GameCube has 12 games, two of which don't suck

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've fallen out of love with the GC in a big way but that doesn't hold, AA. I can only think of about 5 PS2 games I love, having played lots. I can only think of 2 X-Box games I love. Granted, I can only think of about 5/6 GC games I love too but I'm so disappointed with this generation of consoles it is unbelievable.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Xbox may have more good games than the GC, but the GC has more great ones.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Cozen: Me too.

Nintendo used to lead with true innovation and excellent games, but the whole GameCube venture has been a complete waste of time. Mario Sunshine was average the first time and doesn't bear replaying; Wind Waker wasn't progressive in any sense and had too many design problems; and there's absolutely no sign of things improving, apart from potential gems like Pikmin 2.

The PS2 is just like the PS1 with better graphics, and while the Xbox has some great titles, there are massive gaping genre holes in its library.

Buying games doesn't excite me anymore. I've got five games I haven't even opened yet.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

DDR on PS2 has better mats and cooler songs. Otherwise I'm quite enjoying my Xbox. I would definitely consider getting a Gamecube because of its dirtcheapness, some good Star Wars games, Warioware and the Megaman compilation.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone tell me good X-Box games? I love Halo to pieces and Project Gotham is enjoyable/pretty I guess - but what else?

Andrew, what games d'you reckon are great on the GC? I was just saying to Leee in AIM, I reckon: Mario, Metroid, the Monkey Balls, and Zelda.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite Xbox-exclusive experience has probably been MechAssault, I think. I'm actually glad I don't have a PS2 because now I can't buy Square RPGs and feel guilty about not finishing them.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Although that Zelda game has long stretches of tedium. I wish they'd port the Ocarina of Time into the cel-shading - the best of both worlds: the quality of ideas and storyline from Ocarina matched with the beauty and smoothness of Wind Waker's animation.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

JET SET RADIO FUTURE

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

OH YEAH, that badboy!

Sadly, it seems that all the great next-gen games came out on the Dreamcast with it's poor distribution/promotion and shitty, awkward, uncomfortable controllers.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Morrowind's a good Xbox game. Probably the best, if you like that sort of thing.

Metroid lost me, too annoying and repetitive. Got sick of going into a room I just left and facing the same enemies I killed four seconds earlier.

And Zelda's cell shading? Yuck. OOT was loaded with atmosphere. It felt like exploring a lush new world. Wind Wanker feels like fopping about in a comic book.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But lots of them have been ported over onto the other consoles (NFL Y2K on PS2, Virtua Tennis 2 on PS2, JSRF on X-Box etc.)

What about Power Stone?!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Sega's lost the plot.

Universe: We want Nights! We want PD Saga! We want a decent Sonic game!
Sega: Tough. This is what you're getting, shut up and like it

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

How are F-Zero X and Mario Kart?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Wind Wanker feels like fopping about in a comic book.

And that's what gave it charm!

Add to the great GC games: Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. Using the exact gameplay and controls of MGS2 and actually getting to play as thee Solid Snake, plus redone cut scenes and some totally bangin' son action scenes!

Oh and Mario Kart: Double Dash, I haven't had the chance to play battlemode yet because I'm a misanthropic loser, but the single player will keep you playing for weeks.

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel so rockist pining for the SNES.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil Zero are absolutely gorgeous (though I suppose I'm comparing them to Code Veronica = a straight port of a Dreamcast game). The control scheme still blows, but the dual-control in RE0 is pretty cool.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

By all accounts both F-Zero and Mario Kart are rehashes of their respective predecessors, and the latter copped a reasonable sledging in the press.

When you can't get your simplest franchises right, it's time for a shake-up.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

With what Sega are doing to Sonic atm, I'm pretty happy with them leaving Nights alone :(

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Mario Kart: Double Dash is fucking fantastic! As a diehard player of the original SNES and later N64 versions, I can attest to its greatness and trueness to the form of the franchise.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i am SO FUCKING ADDICTED to the GC Harvest Moon game.

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I am seriously considering the purchase of a PS2 (to complement my Xbox and GC) for the sole purpose of playing Winning Eleven 7 which I have on my gf's pc and play aaaaaallllll the tiiiiiiiime--it seems like being able to relax and play it via TV would make it even better.

Also Xbox still rules 'cause of Knights of the Old Republic and now Ninja Gaiden... Fight Night is my next purchase though.

adam (adam), Monday, 19 April 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm enjoying KOTOR but everyone else I know is just like, "Oh, you're not playing it on PC? Weak."

(pssst, Adam, did you see the New Orleans FAP thread?)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but not being from that country where New Orleans is, I wouldn't be going anyway. :)

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 April 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, FAP means something else 'round these parts, usually involving Kylie Minogue, olive oil, and a small cup.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 April 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that when people try to list major consoles, they're 10 times more likely to think of Xbox than PS2.

Well, they obviously are! I think hierarchies in categories are more emergent than you think. You're right about the red herring though - wasn't thinking.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not really about 'thinking of' things. One thinks of all three at once, almost, but then X-box seems the natural one to put first.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

So why isn't this natural order reflected in sales figures, and why does the runner-up put PS2 last? I'm just wondering - you're probably right about people thinking like this.

I'd probably pick them in thread title order (sales ranking) or p-g-x (preferred console).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 April 2004 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.linguistics.ucsb.edu/faculty/cumming/ling50/radial_categories.htm

Do you think that XBox is more central because the name itself is so generic/glyphlike - what's more generic an item than a box? - or because it comes to mind ahead of the part-of-the-scenery-ness of PS and the niche/cult of the cube (only just less generic than box)

i must start to market my Z-Thing console now

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 19 April 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but not being from that country where New Orleans is, I wouldn't be going anyway. :)
Also, FAP means something else 'round these parts, usually involving Kylie Minogue, olive oil, and a small cup.

I meant the other Adam of course, but if you're going to bring Kylie, by all means make the effort to come.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupidity is a mental condition. Pity me.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone with a GC figure out if it's possible to do a soft reset? (Am I confusing it with Playstation?)

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Never seen one.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Though considering the swift restart times it's never been a big deal.

Does Nintendo's hardware specify swift load times and memory card access, or is it a "house style"? The only GC game where I really noticed were third-party. And usually ports.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

noticed = "Jays, this is taking forever"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it was a sort of vague pledge to users cos of the legacy of cartridge based games loading so quickly.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

PS2 has Manhunt. you can rip someones balls off with a sickle, decapitate with a piece of wire, stick chainsaw vertically through the top of someones head. Stealth it is. Better than sHitman.
Also Silent Hill 2 & 3, Onimusha series.

splatter, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm considering splurging on a PS2 come first paycheck.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
no ps2 suck in so many ways that i dont really want to say it like GRAPHICS, CONTROLS on two (boring), take a long fucking time to load a game, no hdd too much money to get one, memmory card way too much money, failed in online gaming, who gives a shit if it was make from microsoft, and is so easy to mod an xbox but ps2 take a long long long long long time, and u can even install MAC OS X on xbox without modding and u can still play on live when u have the os installed...can u don that with PS2...HELL FUCKING NO!!! but i wouldn't go for a gamecube either but i like the little compact style of it and so on....get my point? GET AN XBOX!!!

appless, Friday, 19 November 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i have just ordered a pre-chipped xbox with a 120gb hard drive, so now i have both ps2 and xbox. i wouldn't want a gamecube if you were giving them away.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 November 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Your loss.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 19 November 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually a friend of mine has an XBox now, he won it and a copy of Halo 2. On the one hand it's sort of surprising that it's taken this long for one of my circle of friends to get one - most of us have PS2, and we have all had a PlayStation at one time or another. On the other hand, I sat down to think "I reckon I'll be able to borrow it some time in the new year, maybe I should look out for cheap secondhand games that I couldn't get on the other systems. Let's see, there's ... uh ..."

Apart from the cheap thing (XBox games are about €10 more expensive that PS2), the only names I could come up with are:

Chronicles of Riddick
Otogi (maybe, I understand it's pretty but I might not get more from it than that)
Panzer Dragoon Orta (see above)
Jet Set Radio Future (yes!)
Fable
Jade Empire (not out until next year)
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee (my understanding is that this was worse than the extravaganza that was originally planned, but probably still a pretty good game)

Is that it for XBox-exclusive games that don't suck?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 19 November 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

well I'm not sure of your point, with games that are available on all platforms give me an Xbox any day. I still want my pS2 for their exclusive games (gta of course although San Andreas will be available for xbox next year)

I also prefer the ps2 contoller to any other.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 November 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm thinking of getting a ps2 just to play Metal Gear Solid 3 and GTA:SA.

i loove my x-box.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 19 November 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also the Knights of the Old Republic games, MechAssault games, the Halos obv.

I would like someone to give away a Gamecube, pls, so I can play the Metroid Primes.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, KOTOR and Halo are grebt, but I have them for PC, and I'll have the sequels in a year or two.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

to be fair my nintendo hatred is probly uneccessary and exists purely because one of my mates refuses to buy anything other than nintendo game systems, even though he could happily afford anything he wanted.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

A sensible fellow.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

If any UK people want the frankly unlikely combo of a gamecube, pokemon black (I think) and some memory, all for £29, go to Tesco's web site and enter the code XXGHPF to get an extra £5 off. I've been told this does work.

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

mr teeny to me last night: "you're not allowed to get a game system until you get a job, because I KNOW HOW THAT STORY ENDS."

Shit Mark! I've got a GC but that's such a good deal I might get it anyway and flog the other one!

Pokemon Colosseum BTW.

It was an error. I should have bought it. I am getting BAD withdrawal symptoms, I am going to miss all the christmas events and all the animals will hate me and my town will be full of weeds and frankly I wonder whether I should just delete my town and start again, ARGH!

There are no PS2s or Xboxes in NYC! I'm still waiting to be gifted. I'm having total issues, though: Xbox seems like the right choice capability-wise, but I'm a simple man who just loves cutesy platform games, and so maybe a Gamecube is the right thing to do?
