long hair on girls: classic or dud

long hair on girls has a certain appeal - it can be worn in pony tails or pigtails, for instance. but it does get everywhere.

so I dunno. visually - classic. practicality - dud.

what say you?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

agreed, but the visual appeal over-rules the practicality usually

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

How long is 'long'?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not a fan of long hair on girls, certainly not past shoulder length anyway.

gareth (gareth), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

girlfriend hasnt cut her hair for about 2 years...yes it is getting a bit ridiculous (she used to have it like Manda Rin tho, so i dunno where we're better off)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

:(

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

practicality of long hair = CLASSIC

i had short hair for several years, variations on a fringe, and my god, was it a pain in the ass to have to blowdry it, style it, get it to not go curly, wash it all the time. succombing to becoming a hippie and growing my hair back out long was the best thing i ever did. i can wear it in ponytails and braids or leave it loose and hippy-ish, if i forget to wash it for a day or two, it's not really noticable, and... plus, it's just one of those things. i have better pulling power with long hair.

i have urges every now and then to just cut it all off, but it's too much bother. my hair is too curly and fine really to do any kind of cool fringe/garage rock/shag hair, which i'd really like. being long tames the curl and fights the frizz.

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

these are on geocities, so you are going to have to copy and paste into your browser to get them to display, but...

here is me with long hair:

here is back when i short hair (blowdried and styled and beaten into straightness):
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/8466/kate1.jpg

which do you think is better?

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

They both look the same to me.

David (David), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Agree with Kate and love the practicality of long hair, you don't even need to wash it that much and nice to hide with. Short hair has more of a 'look' like she is stylish & put-together & can afford expensive razor-trimmed style. I just had mine cut to chin-length.

Genevieve, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Short.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I see you already added a rider about geocities images not showing up so sorry for the feeble joke. I prefer the second but that could just be because I prefer that photograph.

David (David), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Her hair is pretty & she has the sideburn thing: http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=3002&month1=8&pg=1&styl1=TPL

Sorry, I'm not fancy and do not know how to do picture trick.

Genevieve, Friday, 13 December 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

But I like having long hair. It looks better on me. It's probably one of the nicer things about my appearance, so I like to have lots of it.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

persoanlly i have a thing for long hair. not freaky long, but un-short hair. i don't think i've ever been involved with a girl with hair shorter than shoulder length. straight hair too, i dyslike curly hair for some reason.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i think most girls look better with long hair, even when this blatantly isnt the case - i'm such a ruddy bloke

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Short hair has more of a 'look' like she is stylish & put-together & can afford expensive razor-trimmed style.

Only if your hair is naturally straight or you have the time, energy, and hair products to make it behave like "Asian" hair. But yes, bobs and other short cuts on hair like this are major classics.

As my hair's natural tendency is to be frizzy and contrarian, I wear it long (about 8 inches below shoulder length right now), blow it out straight, and pull it back in a braid or with a clip.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Long hair to look at... dud
Long hair to play with... classic!

Aaron W, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I DEMAND that Kate does her next show with her hair in a Patsy beehive and posts pictures.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

there was a time when i used to have an amazing beehive. but considering that my hair was red at the time, it was more of a kate from the b-52's or her off married with children sort of a look. i wish there were pictures somewhere. i loved having a beehive, but it took THREE HOURS to get ready, and i had to have a friend help me. but combined with white knee-high boots and dayglo paisley dresses, it made for excellent "dancing in cages at 60s mod/psych nights" outfits.

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have the right face for short hair (or the right hair type). I've seen pictures of me after drastic haircuts -- well, I wear my hair long now because it makes all the gender-identity confusion stuff seem a little less troubling.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer short hair. Short as in not longer than to the shoulders.
Even better if it's chin lengyh.

, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends on the girl though at the moment I'd have to say short.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is very relevant to me. I have had short (ie: shoulder length or above) hair for most of my life - except for maybe a year in high school. So I decided a few months ago that I would grow it out. It's been REALLY REALLY hard (I guess my life hasn't been that rough, huh?) not to get it cut just because the idea of going to get a haircut is always appealing to me (even though I should know better from so many bad cuts) and I love the feeling of having less weight on my head and washing is easier that way... But I'm on my ... I don't know... maybe my 4th month without a cut now? And my hair is just at my shoulders. In fact, when I saw my sister a week or so ago who I hadn't seen in 5 months she was like, "Did you get your hair cut? It looks shorter..." grrr... But yeah, trying it out...

Best thing so far is being able to pull it back. It seems kind of dumb to grow your hair out just so you can pull it back, but it's fun.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Girls with long hair super classic.
Girls with short hair also classic.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan they we shall demand you to grow a huge fro and take pictures of yourself at your next performance.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, dan! i, too demand this!

white boy fros = DUD
black boy fros = PHWOAR!

(yes that's racist, so sue me.)

i'll do a patsy stone behive if you embrace the fro!

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

how do you grow a fro if you've got strait hair?

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Fros infront of you at a concert no matter who, DUD.
Unless its P-Funk related.

It's also essential in hot, humid climates.

Hair is dead stuff, like finger-nails, and the less dead stuff shrouding a person, the better.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 15 December 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

long hair is not practical. when i had long hair it would always get caught in the screws on chairs. and it was a menace and a half to brush. now it shorter i don't have to brush it at all, and i spend less time washing it and drying it.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 15 December 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

my hair is short simply for the laziness factor - yeah, it still looks bad if i don't blow-dry it, but at least there's less of it to look bad when i don't want to bother (that is, every day). shoulder-length hair looked best until i got sick of taking care of it. long hair just got stringy and sort of overwhelmed my face, which always made me sad because it looks SO GOOD on 98% of girls.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Hair is important.

one year passes...
I'm getting my long hair (currently brushing the back strap on my bra) cut up to my shoulders Friday. It's layered and fairly curly just now but it's a pain in the arse having to wash it every morning cos slept on curls are a no no. Gonna be wearing it straighter (but not flat ironed) so i can blow dry it in the evenings and enjoy an extra half hour in bed on these cold winter mornings.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds nice.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It better be dud as I've just had all of my long hair cut off!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Buy a GHD and you can have it as long as you like, Leigh. I've had mine for two years and it's still going strong. Takes 2 mins to do my hair in the morning and it's about the same length as yours.

Practically, shoulder length hair is the hardest to manage.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The main reason i want it cut is that the ends are frazzled and are a nasty gingery colour after dyeing it. Poker straight hair doesn't suit me hence the lack of irons - my brother's ex-girlfriend used her ghd irons on me and the results were amazing but i really need a bit more body. I want it so it's sitting on my collar bones.

Of course, come next spring/summer it'll be back to really long and curly.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh right, if it's looking dry and burnt out chop it off! I was going to have a hair cut today until I thought about it and realised I couldn't be arsed.

long hair - classic. its also very practical in the winter, static aside. it keeps your head warm!

its more fun to play with. there's so many other things you can do with long hair that you cant with short hair.

i have long hair because it looks good on me and honestly, i think my hair is my best asset. so here's to more of it.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Really long hair is classic. Reminds me of fairytale princesses. (I have no intention of timimg said hair - I could never climb the rope in gym, to my disappointment). My hair is long, but it is comical apparently. People like to point and laugh. And pull it in pubs. This is because it is not only long, it is also curly and it is also ginger. Oh Lord, how have I offended thee? Someday my princess will come (soon please).

im pretty sure cutting my hair short might be pp's number one marriage dealbreaker.

sunny successor, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

The last time I had long hair was when I was 14 years old. Sometimes I consider growing it out just because I wonder what it would look like but I really think shorter hair suits my face and personality much better. That said, sometimes I'd kill just to be able to put it in a ponytail.

ENBB, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

i think long hair looks awful on me b/c it gets so curly and puffy and makes my face look too long and thin. i said something about wanting to cut it the other night though and bf was all ;_;

bell_labs, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

I have always lived in a windy town and having long hair has always = hair in face blindness ack! Plus it is terrible in the summer to have long hair as it is one big heat-retaining tent. I look absultuely terrible with a ponytail and feel way earth mother/12-year-old putting my hair in braids.

Abbott, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

I sometimes really do want long hair again but it takes forever to grow and there is a long intermediate phase, it gets tangled and requires lots of combing (= more split ends), and takes way forever to dry and style.

Abbott, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Split ends are fun to pick when bored, though.

Bonita Applebum, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

lol my hair was in pigtails this morning b/c i washed it and it was wet when i left house, which is fine for taking bus, walking, radio stn, but then i forgot once at work and finally looked in mirror - not really a business look :/

long hair on girls has a certain appeal - it can be worn in pony tails or pigtails, for instance. it does get everywhere.

what does that even mean??

I understood this as it gets all over the shower and sink. Because man, that's annoying, especially when you have to declog the sink with a toothbrush and you know it's not YOUR hair.

silk pillowcases are lovely to have because they're soft and wonderful, but they don't seem to do anything whatsoever for your hair, regardless of length/style.

It gets in the drains, on my coats and sweaters, on my pillowcases and in my sheets, falls down my shirts during the day and tickles my back, covers the floor when I brush it, etc. I wear it up at home almost constantly to minimize shedding.

I think silk pillowcases were for when you had your hair set like once a week at the hairdresser and the silk disarranged it less at night? Otherwise not sure what good they do.

i saw this woman yesterday who had either really amazing hair or really amazing hair extensions - how do you even tell? it was past mid-back but didn't look stringy or anything and there was a lot of it, in several thick curls - and so shiny! i mean obv it was dyed and great effort had been put in, but it was like a thing in itself this hair, did it even matter if it was real or not?
i don't think i could have that hair, or that hair wld not deserve me

i have a friend who wears a fall for dance performances, and she looks amazing in it. the first time i saw her in it i just kept staring at her because it seemed like her hair had miraculously sprouted from shortish hair to midback length.

yeah it didn't occure to me that it was fake the first time I saw it, even, I just firgured, hey, ain't seen her in a while.

Bad and cheap fake hair, though, is not hard to spot.

Lay down on your carpet sometime and look at all the hair that never comes out of it. It is disgusting.

It is one of 800 reasons why I hate carpet.

My hair disgusts even me in its ability to multiply and overtake everything in the vicinity.

really amazing hair extensions - how do you even tell?

Feel for tracks.

i have long hair right now which is kind of unusual for me. the last time i had hair this long i was 13. the thing thats frustrating about long hair is that it can either look amazing or really shitty. Today I walked outside in the wind during lunch and voila, shit hair. I do feel like I can do more things with it.

But this past summer I just about lost my shit over how hot my head was. I cut 5 inches off in July and it's already long and curtainy again.
