Attention Scum! The League Against Tedium DVD

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I want the amazingly obscure French children's cartoon "Robostory" on DVD. All 52 episodes! My tape of five episodes recorded off of Thames TV from 1987 are wearing dreadfully thin...

Chriddof (Chriddof), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the Prisoner's already been done...but there was a PBS broadcast of "The Gospel At Colonus" that was on VHS and is now impossible to find, and which changed my life forever, so, umm, that one. Also "Battle of the Network Stars" obviously

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

its also a bit crazy that you have to wait until 2006 or whatever until Star Wars episodes IV-VI are on DVD - i really cant see the point in delaying it, and what about Indiana Jones?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I never saw The Gospel at Colonus but I was very interested in the concept. So it was that involving, Mr. D? Battle of the Network Stars, yes, but Real People would be the real pain. Skip Stephenson digitized!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

DG (D_To_The_G), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Gospel at Colonus is seriously one of my favorite things ever ever -- not to get all emo on you but I can't even listen to it without weeping. The song "Live where you can," delivered by the Chorus to Antigone and Ismene, is such gorgeous pop-gospel: "live where you can/be as happy as you can/happier than God has made your father"...Christ it gives me the chills. The Five Blind Boys of Alabama (prior to their "discovery" by NPR et al) also brilliant, also Morgan Freeman as narrator/occasional Oedipus -- strictly from the standpoint of one studying Greek tragedy, TGAC is a fascinating staging of the play, easily more effective than say Anthony Burgess's similarly "avant" version.

Wish it was on DVD, wish wish wish wish wish

Chronological Worzel Gummidge boxsets with Una Stubbs-narrated behind the scenes multi-angle documentary explaining how one minute they were real and the next minute they weren't, original TV trailers and multiple language options including Czech.

Speaking of Czech, chronological Mole boxsets.

Like The Complete Jam on Film only for other groups chronological boxsets.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

all the Michel Gondry Videos on DVD

and just music video compilations in general are far too lacking...its such a waste of the medium that many of these brilliant 'short films' get 3 weeks of scant airtime and then you hardly ever see them again. a 'Cleverest Music Videos that dont feature the artist' type comp featuring stuff like Alex Gopher's 'The Child' and Super Furry Animals 'Juxtaposed With U' would be great

MTV2 or somebody should release video compilations for all the cool vids you dont get to see on TV often because the artists are 'too obscure' - one for heavy rock, one for cool dance etc.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 15 December 2002 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 16 December 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

(am thinking here of all those hours spent religiously recording shows off tv and the resultant mountain of tdks i could obsolete witha single purchase...)

The Complete Clangers (um, actually already exists according to amazon, why have i never seen a copy for sale?)

My So-Called Life box set is out in america but searching for it on amazon.co.uk gets you: My Fair Lady, So I Married An Axe Murderer and a So Solid Crew dvd. sigh.

The Complete Press Gang. That other series that Stephen Moffat did about the stand-up comedian, er, (imdb...) Joking Apart.

YES! to Millennium (curse you ITV), YES! to Homicide: LOTS (curse you Channel4), YES! even to worzel gummidge (he opened our local supermarket don't you know) if only so i could sit the wife down in front of that and the clangers and noggin the nog and point and say 'this is why i grew up like i did'

koogs, Monday, 16 December 2002 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it's out here (well so it said in Guardian Guide a few weeks ago, I haven't had the money to go and look for it)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 16 December 2002 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Worzel did a local fete near us. He refused to sign autographs because (and I quote) "I can't, I've got twigs".

Making Out and The Riff-Raff Element. I don't think these have ever even been repeated. Maybe now that the writer Debbie Horsfield is a hit with that hairdresser show (was it called Cutting It?) they'll repeat her earlier work.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

> Jeeves and Wooster!

was out christmas shopping on wednesday and saw complete series 2 and complete series 4 so i'm guessing they are already available. (this was bond street hmv, which it took me 15 minutes to realise wasn't oxford street hmv, d'oh!)

no sign of MSCL though, not anywhere. think guardian article was wrong or just assumed we all have access to region 1 players.

no sign of complete clangers either. saw the plastic divider for the correct section a couple of times but nowhere had the actual dvd.

andy

koogs, Friday, 20 December 2002 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
> Chronological Worzel Gummidge boxsets

well, in hmv bond street again last week and saw WG dvds albeit the 3 episodes per disk kind rather than the 'Complete'.

and looking at them i noticed that that was charlotte coleman who played the girl, the same charlotte coleman who was in Oranges are not the only fruit, 4 weddings and, oh, tons of other great things. and died of an asthma attack last year.

managed to get the complete clangers for a tenner in tower at start of month too.

I finally got that set, Chris - and those first six-or-so episodes look so damn good, especially compared with the VHS crap. And I do mean CRAP. Yeah, in capital letters and all. HORRIBLE quality! It's sad when the titles aren't in that cool green, but rather a blurry grey.

- I'd second the Goodies - I know a DVD has come out, but it has some pissy amount of episodes (like, 5 or so?) when there were scores.
- Also, can they not release more than 2 or 3 seasons of the Simpsons? I mean geez, theres almost 20 seasons now isnt there?
- Season 3 and that short 4th season Fast Show (unless this is out and I'm slow)
- seconded/thirded/fithded Ren and Stimpy (only the original John K episodes tho)
- Kenny Everett's Video Casette

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 7 June 2003 04:54 (twenty-three years ago)

3rd season of Simpsons should be coming out near the end of the summer. Supposedly they are taking their sweet time doing the commentaries. I'm sure they're running out of things to say for them. By the 8th season, they'll just be reciting grocery lists and Longfellow.

There's an online petition to get Freaks & Geeks released on DVD here. Apparently, the studio is somewhat reluctant to release it due to the high cost of licensing all the music that was used in the show, so they need proof that lots of people would buy it. Please fill it out for my sake, I loved that show.

I have the entirety of Twin Peaks on DVD as a box set, imported from the fine country of Spain.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 4 January 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope that they release a new DVD transfer of "The Ben Stiller Show" where they put some jokes in the show. That'd be rad.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Revive - cos a lot of the things I listed the first time round have been released or are about to be, and maybe if I list some more they might come out, namely a reissue of Moondial, Jonathan Meades Further Abroad/Even Further abroad series, the edgy first series of Cardiac Arrest.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
"The complete One Foot In The Grave
This Life series 2
Secret Army
Tenko
Survivors
A Very Peculiar Practice
The House Of Cards/Francis Urquhart trilogy
Star Fleet
The Life & Loves Of A She-Devil
The Dukes Of Hazzard
HOWARD'S WAY!!!"

I was just reading through this thread again and find it interesting how most of the above wish list I posted two years ago has now been made/is being made available.

I suppose it illustrates that archive TV is a big growth area in DVD.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

i second TWIN PEAKS SEASON TWO! (you can rent bootleg episodes transferred to DVD from my local movie rental store, but it ain't the same... the quality sucks and every now & then these tracking bars blip across the screen -- especially during the episode in which ______ kills _____!!!!!!!)

also, wim wenders earlier shit.

killy (baby lenin pin), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Why haven't I posted this before? I will pay $1,000,000 USD for a Degrassi Jr High / Degrassi High DVD box set!

What a deal. Looks like I'm going to end up paying only around $200 or so.

account settings (account), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:46 (twenty years ago)

oh shit, i've downloaded all the degrassi: next generation episodes & would love to have a real, high quality version

killy (baby lenin pin), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Still waiting for Taking Over the Asylum. I thought that David Tennant's ascent to superstardom may have warranted even a repeat on the TV, but no, apparently not. Would also like A Mug's Game and Tutti Frutti.

Just found out that Press Gang is out - will be off to buy ASAP :)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:20 (twenty years ago)

killy - Twin Peaks season 2 is due out in the spring.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:24 (twenty years ago)

An official, full release of The Maxx series from MTV.

A bootleg of Undressed would be acceptable, an official DVD set divine.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Sunday, 15 January 2006 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Holiday (really, what the fuck?)
Performance
Waiting For God
Tango (directed by Patrice Leconte - I've seen the last half on the International Channel, and I liked it, and it's nowhere, except in PAL format)
Saint Clara
If...

The early Marx Brothers movies are out by now, right?

clotpoll, Sunday, 15 January 2006 08:04 (twenty years ago)

The Maxx seconded.

Also, the state, for fucks sake.

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 15 January 2006 08:28 (twenty years ago)

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 15 January 2006 08:29 (twenty years ago)

hell, i kinda wish they'd bring that show back!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 15 January 2006 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Armando Ianucci's comedy series - a wildly underrated lost classic.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 15 January 2006 13:02 (twenty years ago)

That's My Bush, if only to see the one where Bush gets fired and has to take a series of new jobs....

Also, an adult-geared early years of Sesame Street and Electric Company retrospective for people with longer attention spans.

"The New Show" - Steve Martin & Buck Henry

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Sunday, 15 January 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

CharlieNo4 OTM.

I don't think the criminally overlooked Samurai Jack has had a UK release yet.

chap who would dare to work for the man (chap), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

killy - Twin Peaks season 2 is due out in the spring.

where is that confirmed?

also, you can get the pilot in either the UK version of the season 1 box, or as a not-quite-legal standalone dvd on amazon and everywhere else (but it's sped up slightly which makes it unwatchable, to me)

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Check out the news updates at http://www.dugpa.com/

Twin Peaks season 2 is definitely in the works.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Armando Ianucci's comedy series - a wildly underrated lost classic.
-- CharlieNo4 (starsandheroe...), January 15th, 2006.

May 2006 Charlie. It's the music that's been the problem. Licensing and such. Frank Sinatra's 'All or Nothing' in particular i guess, seeing as it wass used whole in one sketch.

Still waiting on The Maxx

milo z, Sunday, 20 April 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Humphrey Jennings' 'The Silent Village' :/

Stevie T, Sunday, 20 April 2008 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

All of Howard Goodall's stuff.

Organ Works
Choir Works
Great Dates
Big Bangs
20th Century Greats
How Music Works

He makes music history and theory really interesting and although some stuff is available via Bitt0rrent, some of it is of questionable quality.

But at least they've released Keith Floyd's back catalogue - I'm really looking forward to seeing "Floyd Uncorked". Magic stuff.

How about the one series of "Is It Bill Bailey?"

AndyTheScot, Monday, 21 April 2008 08:54 (eighteen years ago)

Humphrey Jennings' 'The Silent Village'

Four of his films were restored and re-issued last summer (as you probably know), so I will...look into it.

Michael Jones, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:13 (eighteen years ago)

Time Trumpet, please.

And though it's impossible, Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe.
