also: be honest! pull no punches! lets do this.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Your contribution SUCKS. Oh wait, that's a lie.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't received my copy because somebody up there hates me.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:34 (twenty-three years ago)

yay Ned! i already know my song SUXORZ! i want to hear bout the rest!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's great! I like Chaki's song.

I'll start sending them out, don't worry N.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 December 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I want! I want!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I still want one. What do I need to do?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I will say pretty things about it if I can have one too, jel?

Lara, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Poor Jel. He has already opened it up to everyone several times and has made over 100 I think. You can have a copy of mine, Lara.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

sarah you on the list I drew up, so just email an address.

Lara, is it okay for N to send you a copy? (I don't think I have many more left that aren't already taken, I can see how many are left once they are all sent, so u are on the reserve list. Sorry!)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

ILX Comp reviewed in Village Voice!

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

YOU ARE MEAN.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
The Pinefox wants to know!

And NABISCO! E-mail me your postal address!!!!!!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Hooray! On the way, Mr. Jel. Can't wait to hear the comp.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

the best two by far are nabiscos promqueen track, and also dleones track.

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Gareth! By the way Jel I decided yesterday that your next musical project should be called "Kitten Corpse."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

It sucks donkey balls through a straw.

, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmmm yeah, now I really can't wait for my copy!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

So far I've listened to Nabisco's, Dominique Leone's, Hanley's and the Pinefox's. I can't decide if they are very very good or I'm just tired. The Pinefox's didn't make much sense till I thought about the title.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm.. seems I picked the best ones. I've just listened to tracks 1-5 and the only one that grabbed me was Matt M & Wes C's.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

So are there still a lot of copies in transit or are we suddenly going by the "if you don't have anything nice to say..." rule?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 January 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I have not gotten mine. You will all know when I get mine.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 27 January 2003 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I really wish I'd contributed to this now. :(

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any idea where mine is?

I don't think Nick's making me a copy anymore and Andrew Farrell is a hard man to track down.

Jel!!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy crap, this is good! (Please read the former statement w/out the inferred "I thought this was gonna suck ass" vibe.) (For the record, I started @ the top, & managed not to cringe or squeal like a stuck pig too much when my contribution came on. I'm nearing the end of the disc.) Mark P's track sounded very Talk Talk-y (which is dead-on awesome). Chupa rocks the 80s Prince beat! Let me rephrase my original statement - holy crap, this is GREAT!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Rah, my copy arrived today! Already knew about half the tracks thanks to them mp3s but I can't wait to hear the whole thing. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a copy yet!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Who is willing to send me a compilation #1 (I would be very greatful) (who do I e-mail my address to?)

and, will there be a compilation #2?

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

And I begin the listen! Dan's track is still as good as ever. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, I hate to sound ungrateful, but Jel, I need a new copy! There's a *really* noticeable skipping glitch on the disc and by the time of Dr. C's song it's completely inescapable. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

(Ned has the Matmos remix.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 07:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't mean that I should have recieved a copy, I was just defending my good name from Lara Harridan Byrne.

It'd probably help if I mailed my address to jel. I'll do that then.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still doing you a copy, Lara. Give me a moment.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh. Thanks.

I sent Jel my address ages ago. He can send the rest of the Dublin one's to me if he (and you) likes?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

one's = ones

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

heard half of it and its really lovely.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Got it last night, and also heard about half. There is some really cool stuff here -- more later if I can get to the computer at home.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

hey y'all I'm sending them out in batches! Contributers and group distributers first!...I have a new batch to send out tomorrow, and then more on Thursday and Friday, haven't been able to get to the post office this week.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

eek! I'll send you a new copy Ned! (damn! I hope this isn't a recurring problem :(...)

Lara i'll send you a copy.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

(Jel, for my receiving-this-properly purposes, do you have an idea how long they're taking to get to the U.S.?)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

(Also: what can we do to help offset your expenses for postage and duplication? If you want to set up an account for contributions I will happily chip in.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Jel will never have to buy a round at a FAP ever again.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the postage to the states is taking about 5-6 days. Yours is going out tomorrow Nabisco, I reckon you'll have it by next Monday.

(people can always make me mix tapes/cd's in return!)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

(oh, but you don't have to, if you don't want to :)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone else received this yet? I sent about 15 out today.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i got mine! thx brah!

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG!

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

ok can we talk about how norman phay's song is sooooo norman fay? its like this prog epic with flute synts and everything. dominque leone's song is like 'what?' like crazy residents acid wow. dayglow fisherman song is beautiful. more ltr

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone else received this yet? I sent about 15 out today.

What, by courier?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

By chickenhawk.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

first impressions - loved nabisco, dleone, mark p and chaki's tracks - (more to come)

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone in canada get this yet?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Kim got it the other day and handed one off to me yesterday. GREBT! I must do something for you to repay you, jel.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't even know of the existence of an ilx comp...was this one of those "put a message at the top of the screen that nickalicious can't see saying nobody let him know about it cause we definitely don't want it clogged up with his craptacular music" kinda things? If so, I'll just leave now with my gaze on the virtual floor.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Jel I got mine the other day and forgot to thank you. I haven't listened to it intently yet but a quick scan tells me things are gonna be... interesting.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Also: I'd like to publicly chide David R. for ruining a perfectly good chord progression. Mentalist!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

nick, we whould push for ILX comp too. I missed out on the first one as well because I think it was only solicited on ILE, which I wasn't reading so relgiously at the time.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, that was incoherent. We SHOULD push for ILX comp TWO. I'll even take on some of the responsibilities for it, if need be.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ILX Comp 2: (Do not hate us if you listen!) (haha I'm copying Kill Rock Stars)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Geez, Mark, it's not like I actually WANTED to play "Blackbird" for the 50 millionth time. I save that for my ears only (oy).

I like the idea of the 2nd comp being covers or tracks "inspired by" yadda yadda, BTW. That was an idea, wasn't it? If so, it was a good idea.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

How was I supposed to know it was "Blackbird" - you didn't do the intro!

In the spirit of nu-meta ILE, the next comp should be the same artists covering each others' songs.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I know that I will record a twee pop song for it, so probably a twee rebel yell.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm certainly going to do something LESS twee. So probably a B&S cover.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Second comp would be cool: I've got more tracks where that one came from.

(Actually, in my state of complete shock that it's possible for people other than me to actively enjoy Promqueen, I am looking into ways to make available -- sort of just for you folks -- the newly-completed Promqueen double-EP, "Is a Good Dancer." It features the hit singles "That's Just It" [Richardson approved], "Party Star!," and "Pretty Pretty Promqueen," in addition to a song about having sex with police officers.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Would that be your cover of "Fuck Tha Police", nabisco?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

If there's another comp, I may submit recordings of my wife singing.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

And I'm gonna cover Personet on acoustic guitar.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Would that be your cover of "Fuck Tha Police", nabisco?

No, not really. (This is a funny answer because the name of the song really is "No, Not Really.")

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Nabisco! I'd love a copy of a Promqueen EP!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

(oh and your copy was dispatched yesterday, Dan did your copy arrive?)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't check the mail yesterday. I'll find out when I get home tonight.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

nick dont cry you baby theres been like a million threas about the comp. check the archives. on Vol 2 chaki will cover a prince song.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 30 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

How did you know I was crying? :D

For vol. II, maybe I could deliver my mandolin/vocal rendition of "Sunless Saturday"? No?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 30 January 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

How did you know I was crying? :D

He was DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANCING...with TEARS in his EYYYYYYYES...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

nick we should collab on a fishbone song! i can get angelo to appear on it even. he just emailed me today. his emails are so funny.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 30 January 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

(insert wide-eyed-jaw-dropped "eek!" emoticon here)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 30 January 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i would like to do 'i wish i had a date' after hearing it performed the other night. its such a good song!

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's one of my favorites! I wish I didn't relate so well to the lyrics. :(

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

International collaborations? Like someone fills up one track of a 4-track tape and then passes it on. It must be even easier with computer stuff!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

is ilx comp vol 2 for real? can the international telepaths contribute? or maybe me and rainy with our george michael covers project?

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i will unleash satan's monkey penis on the world

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, don't do that.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

perhaps we can include my dmx bootleg then

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it DMX vs Satan's Monkey Penis?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

sadly not!

(it's a "let's run 'party up' through every mangling filter in sound forge and append a psa about jill's first period' thing circa summer 2000.)

(satan's monkey penis is my lapsed metal band.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I want ILX comp 2 to be real, di. So we shall make it real (though let's give the first a chance to sink in for a bit, first). Has anyone else already been talking about doing this on another thread somewhere? Or should we just make it happen?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the best you could do right now would be to just set a vague date -- say, May 1 -- for people to have tracks ready. If you said that now and checked up in a little while, you could maybe have a new comp going around by this time next year.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

http://members.aol.com/nessdearvell/dmxmix.mp3 (dmx mix. not safe for work. also, not any good.)

http://members.aol.com/nessdearvell/smp.mp3 (satan's monkey penis - "the revenge of the camel toe". oddly, safe for work. also, not any good.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That DMX track is like an aural mugging!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 January 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i thank you.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 January 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

jess you must send "revenge of the camel toe" to menelaus darcy. she will forever be yr slave.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 30 January 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone start a new thread for compilation2 (just like American Idol 2) Get the word out so many other people could contribute.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 31 January 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

We have to ensur that it is exactly like American Idol 2.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 31 January 2003 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The new comp will begin when all all the copies are sent out.

A new thread will be posted on March 1st. Put that date in your diaries. Closing date will be May 31st, but we know how the comp works, so the closing date is really when we have enough songs for a 75min CD.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm listening now. Nabisco's track is good, yes. So is Fatnick's. Something weird happened to my track. The loud part isn't supposed to be all drenched in chorus like that. I don't know if the stereo separation effects are there. I don't know if I like this version or not. It's not necessarily bad. I don't know if I've actually listened to the MP3's that I put on my page. Norman's track sounds pretty good so far.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 1 February 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Just got it, yeah! This is great!

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 1 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone is talking to jess like he isn't still sitting on that ilx tape which wz meant to be travelling the world filling up with i forget what

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 2 February 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I realized that this has been sitting on the table for several days today. ARRGH.

So yeah, it's great! Man, my song sounds glossy and soulless compared to everyone else's... maybe I should have tried to record vocals for it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 2 February 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i am going to send in a proper studio recorded song. consider your minds blown in advance

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 2 February 2003 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

ILX comp (do not listen if you hate us) II: Seriously dude, do not listen if you hate us.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 2 February 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

hey jel, received the comps (and mix cd) today! thanks a billion!

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 3 February 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

di were you distributing copies of the comp to nz ilxors or are copies being sent individually?

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 3 February 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought i was distributing to you all, but i only received copies for me, duckling, andrew and sleazy E so far.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 3 February 2003 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It is a right fitting accompaniment to a girls shopping road trip. Rock, everyone, rah rah rah!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 3 February 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Di, if you send me a copy I can burn some off for the Aucklandersss.

gazza, Monday, 3 February 2003 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, sorry about that I didn't know which part of NZ gazza and esskay were in! are you guys near auckland? I could send them to Donna and she could send them on to you? (I'll do that)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I've not got one yet jel, RJG hates me. :*(

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

that sucks dude! RJG send David his CD please!

(oh and Di, hope you like the other CD!)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and hey chupa, I'll collaborate on a track with ya! Or I could make some sort of weird noise remix of one of your songs.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Could you send a copy for me (if there is one) to Di or Duckling as she knows my land address already? (I will pay postage)

isadora (isadora), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm doing my rap version of "Gimmee the Night". Complete with swears and ho's and bitches.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

jel, i am pleased to inform you that "talk dirty to me" is even BETTER than i remember it being. also, re gaz and ess-kay, to make it easier i really could get some more copies burnt off and sent to the rest of the nz contingent.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh that'd be really cool! Thanks Di!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I am also yet to get one? am i not getting one?

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

you are getting one!

(please forgive my slowness, I shall send them all out by the end of the month)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

slowness is forgiven. thanks jel.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to say right now that it's not RJG's fault since I've not told him my address yet, but still.

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

thank you all for enriching my life! my personal favourite tracks are: chaki's, 1/2, promqueen, fatnick, the 13's, chupa, hanle y and an augmented band.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Yesterday at lunch, I was sitting downstairs in the atrium of our office tower listening to this, and I dunno whether I was just having one of those days, but mark p's song actually made me cry! Then almost immediately some guy who looked like Tyler from the BNL (but was actually named Tad) walked over and started asking me technical questions about mp3 players that I couldn't answer, and was just being, you know - overly friendly. I'm not sure where I'm going with this little story...

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just got my copy and listened through over the morning's work. I have really enjoyed this: it's a pretty good mix of great affecting tracks and strange surprises. (The biggest surprise to me, actually, was that on a comp with a pretty big ambient/IDM sound-art slant, the Pinefox of all people comes in at the end with ... sort of an ambient-noise instrumental.)

Winner of the "get this guy a record deal" competition is Mark P, without question: this is absolutely great stuff, and -- honestly -- great in the cover-story featured-artist kind of way. (Technical note: that early sort of trem-y organ sound is terrific.) (For those of you who haven't yet heard the comp: look forward to something in the Bark Psychosis / Talk Talk or Radiohead-piano-ballad kind of vein.) I'm also really taken with Dom Leone's track (he really does like XTC) in which that choral-lift bit is really stirring -- not to mention which it's just generally sort of brilliant and adventurous. (Mark and Dom are also the good ambitious vocalists here, since Dan contributed an instrumental.)

Dan's track is great as well, and in a way that really got me, because I used to work with that same software and never got anything near that compelling out of it. Di and Duckling sound great -- I'd love to hear a proper studio recording of them and I'd also like to kidnap whichever of them is playing bass. Chaki is like an LA version of Momus, isn't he. And Matt M and Wes C please note: for the next comp we need more of this and longer, as this is absolutely terrific and I wanted to cry when it was over so quickly. (Non comp-havers: it's a teensy chamber piece, piano and violin and bells.)

Umm. I know I've mentioned before that I love Hanle y's stuff -- some sort of difference-splitting between Wally Pleasant and Morrissey -- but this is pretty much my favorite of his since "An Argument for Sugar." (Mike is second in the "record deal please" sweepstakes, actually -- I would go out of my way to buy Hanle y records on their release day.) A lot of you make me feel really incompetent with signal processing, e.g. Honda (Honda is like Danny Elfman doing IDM, and also of signably high quality), Sundar (I expected that one) and Dayglo Fishermen (suitably oceanic; are those processed Orbital samples at the opening?). And what R Fatnick using to generate these great tones?

Norman and Dr C. both deliver wonderfully on exactly what I expected and wanted from them. For one thing I can't wait until it gets warmer so I can listen to the Vietgrove track (pastoral prog) while on a bicycle; for another I spent my drive into work listening to the Primitives and Boyracer, so I was perfectly prepped for Dr. C's old-school indie.

And Chupa. Biggest wonderful surprise of the disc. Damn, Chupa. Damn.

I've missed a few, I think, but I will come back to them. This was a great idea, and I'm really happy to have it here -- thanks Jel, and if you send me your mailing address I will be happy to send you a Promqueen EP in return. Also I apologize to everyone who had to get up and turn up the volume for the Promqueen track and then presumably turn it back down afterward: next time through we really should do some mastering to get everything equal, but for the time being I encourage you to pump up the volume so you can bump to Promqueen the way God I intended.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, mark p's song is good. Who knew ILx was so goth?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

For those of you who haven't yet heard the
comp: look forward to something in the Bark Psychosis / Talk Talk or Radiohead-piano-ballad kind of vein.

Quite right. When I first got the mp3 from him, I was thinking, "Dude! The man's on." Glad to hear others agree. :-)

I wish I could say more about the second half of the disc now! Everyone's making me jealous. (Oh yeah, I checked the disc Jel -- there's no obvious defect with it, but that skip is very much present. :-( )

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

If a sequel is done, I think the London crew should get working on the QotSA/Ghostbusters London Bootleg Orchestra track.

starry (Groke), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

(oh the volume on yr track may be my fault, I made an analogue version coz you said there were problems with the stereo sound on your song) (I shall email you my address, thanks a lot! :)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco, it's ALL ABOUT the Regulator mod for Rebirth.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Too late, sucka, I use Reason now!

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just sayin...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

aw, bless!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

London Bootleg Orchestra is URGENT and KEY!

Will Mo give us a song for the next one?

Dave Q emailed a while back, so I'm hopeful of a Brazen Hussies for volume two.

(will send u a new copy Ned!)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco's track sounds like what _Speak And Spell_-era Depeche Mode would have sounded like if it didn't suck.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't been able to form a clear view on all of it. Possibly I need to hear it at higher volume.

The one thing that's clear so far is that Perry and Nabisco are very 'professional' - they really sound like they know what they're doing. It's not quite my thing, but something about the 'Wallflower' track impresses me - the general level of technical skill, the circling and returning chords, and a certain recurrent moment of keyboard harmony that happens on the D, or whatever it is (if this is in A. Why do I think it's in A?)

the pinefox, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, thx nitsuh, that's really nice.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

im a *so* not an la momus

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

IT'S TOO LATE NOW CHAKI!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

im crying

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

can I be "L.A. Momus" instead, then?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

No, you are the Canterbury Joseph Byrd.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I am the New England Dan Perry. (...)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm the West London Sum 41!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked Fatnick's track a great deal.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

jel: Were you talking to me? Do you mean you made a mono version? That would be the problem because the piece is partly based on stereo separation effects. I think I just might have said that the piece doesn't work as well if you don't listen in stereo.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I meant Nabisco, I just put yours on the computer as I got it.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh never mind then.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

so, maybe something happened then, but I dunno how that would happen. Sorry about the sound prob!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr C's track is good. That's not him singing, is it? I think I'd heard Dominique's track before but it's great. haha the Pinefox brings the noise!

(Thanks Nabisco)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The surprise was pinefox's track I think.

Once i listen to all of it I'll try to give a more 'rounded' view.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Another listen.

In Perry now I notice what sounds like a creative way of ceaselessly changing key.

In Promqueen, too, a creative approach to keys: the initial E-F-F#m-A, the shift to C#m-B-A, then the F#m-E-D which seems the heart of the matter (is this right?).

Promqueen could try adding some corny guitar arpeggios. (That is, I have already added them, live.)

I liked 'Slow Burn': must be a sucker for that kind of thing. More things stood out, this time, than before: probably thanks to volume.

the pinefox, Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, I wish I could take credit for the key changes! My track is based on the Christmas carol "Personet hodie" ("On This Day Earth Shall Ring"). (Download an mp3 of the Washington Chorus singing it http://mp3.washingtonpost.com/bands/the_washington_chorus.shtml">here.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't; but thanks for the clarification. (I'd wondered where you got such an obscure *name* from.)

the pinefox, Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops, HTML boo boo:

http://mp3.washingtonpost.com/bands/the_washington_chorus.shtml
"Personet Hodie" ("On This Day Earth Shall Ring")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"Personal Hoodie?"

Pinefox, I'm making more guitar-shapes with my fingers and yeah, that's the sequence. It's part of the 5% of songs I've ever written that don't go Cmaj7 Fmaj7 infinity.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

**Dr C's track is good. That's not him singing, is it?**

Hell no! It's a GURL!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 February 2003 08:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm bashing guitar an' t'ing.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 February 2003 08:21 (twenty-three years ago)

My copy arrived yesterday. Thanks Jel! Well, thanks everyone.

Hell no! It's a GURL!

Funny, I listened to that and thought "well, I always assumed that Dr. C. was male, but that was terribly prejudiced...after all, gurls can be good at bar billiards too.

I was very surprised indeed by Pinefox's track...I never expected anything like that. As for the title, TBS did "St. Paul's Cathedral at Night"...is there any link there?

Fatnick's track was the most extreme thing on the comp. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I had to turn the volume down a few times. I thought it sounded rather East European, Polish or something. It broke a lot of musical conventions.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I got mine too. What a treat. I like Nabisco's and Dan's and Dr C's and Chupa's and Matt M's and Mark P's. But that's only a first listen... Oh and Norman's is ace.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I still haven't got mine. *sob*

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco's Promqueen track is my favourite. It reminds me of Spooky Reuben.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I was very surprised indeed by Pinefox's track...I never expected anything like that.

B-but it's a pastoral acoustic lament of suffocating sweetness. So far, so Foxy.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to go to one of his gigs someday. But for some reason I never find out abt them until after they've happened.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Me neither.

Who are TBS?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Trembling Blue Stars.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

alix (alix), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone who liked my track and is around in London on May 18th will get the chance to see us playing live with The Nightingales. Although it's A Nation Mourns not Electric Rembrandt these days and we're a fair bit different to the track on the ILX CD.

Come and throw stuff and buy me a beer!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

How about buying a beer and then throwing it at you, while you play?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

That would be rude and unbecoming of you, pinefox.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey! I'll come and see you Dr C!!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(posting more out tomorrow, Lara can I send the copies for Andrew and Angela to you?)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course, you can send any Irish/Dublin ones to me and I'll forward them.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey now - is that the Robert Lloyd Nightingales, Dr. C?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm new! i want to hear it! can someone burn me a copy?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Pinefox's track surprised me a bit as well. Has he a secret love for Flying Saucer Attack, I wonder?

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

**Hey now - is that the Robert Lloyd Nightingales, Dr. C?**

Yes indeed.

**How about buying a beer and then throwing it at you, while you play?**

No - you might put my ciggy out.

**Hey! I'll come and see you Dr C!!**

Great! More info nearer the time. Like where it is and stuff.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

RT: Nope, never heard 'em.

the pinefox, Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Got mine! Yay! Thanks jel! On first listen I am quite impressed. Mark P's track is amazing.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 22 February 2003 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Great stuff everyone. I'm impressed.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooh! Oooh! I guess mine is in the mail? I'm so excited that I just can't hide it...(I'm so ... I'm so... scared!*)

*(necessary Saved by the Bell ref.)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Got mine! Stuff that got a second listen immediately afterwards: Dan Perry, Promqueen, Mark Pytlik, Electric Rembrandts. Proper review in time.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Will you make a copy for the DV?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

My gig with The Nightingales as announced above is now June, not May. More details when some bugger tells me!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Prey tell whether you'll be touring in Ireland?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Prey/Pray?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

My new album, "How we disconnected our cybernetic brain from the robotic consciousness" will be ready by July. It's going to have a lot of glockenspiel on it.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I should think the 'tour' would be best described as 'one date in a dirty London pub', Lara, so don't hold yr breath.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

My head's turned purple. Are you here yet?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, I never did receive my copy. I am convinced the mail man is out to get me.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Will you make a copy for the DV?

Check.

I am also holding my breath for an Irish Dr C tour (read one date in a dirty Dublin pub). It'd save you on postal fare for that CD!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 7 March 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

My new album, "How we disconnected our cybernetic brain from the robotic consciousness" will be ready by July. It's going to have a lot of glockenspiel on it.

I didn't know that you were in the Flaming Lips.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 7 March 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

they are always copying me!

Nicole, I sent yours a while back. You emailed me your address right?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 7 March 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd quite like a date in a dirty Dublin pub. Or a dirty date in a Dublin pub.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Done.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

(I am Farrell's pimp)

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole, I sent yours a while back. You emailed me your address right?

Yeah, I sent it to you back in January. Which is why I think the mail must have been screwed up. Maybe one of my minions will make me a copy?

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Because I don't want poor Jel to make another copy, he's done enough already.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I sent yours two weeks ago, so it could still be in transit. But my experience is that posting to the US is usually a week or so.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I have had mail from overseas that has taken longer, so I will wait it out a bit.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Right I'm definitely staying this side of the oirish sea now!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

*widens eyes in mystical fashion*

Come to us! Come to us!

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I obey.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I told you we should have pimped Ronana instead.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

We did. Don't tell (I've got him hypnotised). He thinks the lipstick stains are from amorous admirers.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe one of my minions will make me a copy?

As needed. Let me know!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 March 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

jel, can i trade you the forthcoming International Telepaths CD for yr forthcoming CD?

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 8 March 2003 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I got mine too! It's great! thanks jel!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 8 March 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

cool! it's a deal Di! :)

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 March 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Sarah, did you get yours yet?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I really should type up a proper review of this -- maybe I'll do it tomorrow since I have the day off. At any rate, I enjoyed it an awful lot.

In a fit of mentalism last night I contemplated recording Ramon's Picket Fences rant for the next ilx comp, but I really can't sing. Someone else should, though.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, CHris! You are WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL!!! Thanks!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

cool.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

six months pass...
I have just now this minute heard 'Slow Burn' for the first time EVAH and I love, love, love it.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 24 October 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't suppose I could get a copy of this? :(

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I only have the one song, so um, yeah, me too!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 24 October 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Slow Burn" is a beauty. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 October 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the whole thing.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 24 October 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)
