It's awesome! Really awesome! Also I got several colors of sealing wax and a stamp with my initials, and a big makeup kit (I look like a dragon lady now, all red and brown and scary). Those are the coolest things.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

My mom got me this book, 1000 Record Covers...it's just lots of pictures of albums, not very much commentary. Oddly fascinating.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Father Christmas left me a long cylinder in my stocking. I thought it might be a bottle of whisky but no such luck it was a cdbury's selection tube. However, later in the day my dad gave me some 20 year old single malt (cask strength 62.2%), I've not tried it yet because thew copiuois quantities of Chateau Musar (1994, Lebanon) and Morgenhof Port (1992 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, South Africa) that I have imbibed might impair the flavour. My cousin and future new family gave me a George Foreman Lean mean fat reducing grilling machine (because I like to cook, what they haven't realised is that I like the fat too).

My gran gave suzy and I a selection of flavoured olive oils and assorted anti-pasti. My sister gave me a dice game called perudo that I will lose because it involves dice (cf. monopoly, risk et al.) My brother gave me the office and y tu mama tambien on DVD. My uncle gave me a vacuum cleaner for my car.

OH and FC also brought me a mini slinky, a tangerine, a walnut and a hazelnut.

I will not mention the A A Gill book

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

kate, Wednesday, 25 December 2002 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I got nothing and I gave nothing. The reason for the latter: I got my first real paycheck in a long time yesterday, and I didn't have enough time to deposit it, work, and buy gifts. As for the former... the only present I got was my parents leaving for vacation today. I was all set to rent a PS2 and kill time until work tommorrow, but Blockfuckers rented them all out :-(

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a PS2 with Pro Ev 2 and GTA: Vice City. Highlights thus far:

- taking a ho to the beach, having my wicked way, thus gaining some health, then popping her on the back of the head with a claw hammer to get my money back.*

- jacking a car with a screaming preppy passenger-hostage, revving it right up, flying down to the pier, and launching myself out the left-side door as the car wheeeeeeeees into the ocean with aforesaid asshold in situ.*

- satisfying 'knuckle-dusting' sounds.*

also: BEST EASTENDERS EVER! and other such. I have gin, no ice, no tonic, but lime - what can I do with this?

* - note: these are all 'good', erm, things.

* - note: if hypertransferance should occur etc.

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

don;t taunt me!!!

why is boxing day called boxing day?

nickie (nickie), Thursday, 26 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Because everyone hides in boxes. Are you not doing this?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 26 December 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Boxing Day originated in England in the middle of the nineteenth century under Queen Victoria. December 26th became a holiday as boxes were filled with gifts and money for servants and tradespeople.

Also, poor people carried empty boxes from door to door, and the boxes were soon filled with food, Christmas sweets, and money. Parents gave their children small gifts such as, oranges, handkerchiefs, and socks. People also placed old clothing that they didn't need anymore in boxes, and they were given to those in need.

Today, Boxing Day is a holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, and many other Commonwealth nations. It is spent with family and friends at open gatherings with lots of food, fun, and the sharing of friendship and love.

While government buildings and small businesses are closed, the malls are filled with people either exchanging gifts or buying reduced priced Christmas gifts, cards, and decorations.

Throughout the Christmas season, many organizations follow the original tradition of Boxing Day by donating their time, energy, and money to fill the Food Bank, provide gifts for children who live in poverty, or to help an individual family who is in great need at the time.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 December 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, i sympathize. My family is either unemployed this year, newly retired or now turning their energies to a a growing cadre of grandchildren. For me the font of gifts has dried up.

I don't sweat it though, it's part of growing older right? I'm just consoling myself with not having to go back to work 'till the 6th.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 26 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

graham, don't be blue! send me your address (unless you're afeard that I'll stalk you or send doggy droppings) and I'll send you a wee Christmas treat!

No one should be a moody judy at christmastime! Cazam! Pow! Pop! Whizz!

nickie (nickie), Thursday, 26 December 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Good old nickie.

(tho' Graham, don't wait up - I'm still waiting for a tape she promised me four and a half years ago)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 26 December 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Shut up, you!

nickie (nickie), Thursday, 26 December 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

with my birthmas £ i procured for myself a hat from pineal eye, a tape of gimme gimme octopus, a CD of toru takemitsu's film music, some dinky cosmetix and loads of num from the patisserie

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 26 December 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I just got sick for Christmas, I now feel awful. I could probably manage going out but don't want to risk it and yet there's noone at home and I'm soooooo bored.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i have had flu also ronan, the red wine episode on the 20th knocked me right out and then i got flu, ive been terrible all over christmas but i seem to be beginning to turn the corner today. that may partly have been due to a combination of table tennis and mary poppins

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

do you have AIM dude? I could do with some human interaction. I should be ok by tomorrow once I take it easy with the eating/drinking which probably made me sick in the first place.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

no, i'm in bradford. no aim on this pc. it is actually steam powered! :(

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

D'oh, I wish I felt better, I'm so bored. I hate sitting here watching the clock, when I should be out seeing my friends, I was away for the last few days anyway, this is irksome.

On the plus side I am warm since I put on two extra jumpers.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

boxing day presents:

cheap trick - heaven tonight!! (a rarity as it's deleted now! yay!)
a hamster in a wheel (not a real hamster)
sweets
a torch
some desk tidying things

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot to mention I got sick for xmas too - a nice little bad cold/ kidney pains combo.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

If it helps any, Ronan, I'm sick *and* at work. Pain and boredom doubled. Vicks inhaler and Beechams flu plus is the key.

nickie (nickie), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed I had a beechams earlier, I really blame myself cos I was fine on my journey from Limerick to Dublin and then when I got home hungry I ate a pizza and had a beer. Cue massive bout of the shivers which I tried to cure with Beechams followed by major sickage and head which feels like it has large weights on it. Get well soon everyone else. I am going to cry profusely if I'm not better by tomorrow.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 December 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

The White Christmas brought me lots of WET Christmas cards, damn snow. Luckily, my letter from Paris and my record from London were not badly harmed.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 26 December 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to cry profusely if I'm not better by tomorrow.

What a threat!

Sarah Johnson (coco), Thursday, 26 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to cry profusely if I'm not better by tomorrow.

What a threat!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 26 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm warning you!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 December 2002 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow. Another person whose name begins with Sarah and has the exact same email address as I do just posted the exact f-in thing! Que bizarre!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 26 December 2002 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

ive been in bed pretty much every day since saturday, apart from a bout of xmas shopping and a london-bradford train journey

its been a shame, i've missed lots of going out, in london, leeds and manchester...

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 26 December 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

An amazing fountain pen with cartridges

Two 70 minute compilations, each one mixed

Damien Hurst / Gordon Burns book

Blank Pad

Diary 2003

Something that stops my phone from clicking

A Whisk-O-Lait (kitchen appliance in original box and it works!)

and I bought myself loads of magazines and ordered the Chris Marker Cd-Rom.

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 26 December 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

why is boxing day called boxing day?

Because you dash to the record stores and use the gift cards you received to buy the fancy box sets you coveted earlier this year.
;^}

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 26 December 2002 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

a shag

djkbg, Friday, 27 December 2002 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed what everyone got cos of the database fuXor :(

My boss bought me a very classy and nice leather Coach purse! I've never had a purse that was worth more than the entire contents and then some, I feel very fancy. I got a lot of presents because it's just me, my family had no peripheral boyfriends to buy for this year, so I got all the spending, it was great. I mean, there have been years where my mom seemed to buy more for the bfs than for me, what is that? I mean, I'm not looking for them to buy me jack, I can buy things myself easily - but if you're GOING to buy things, why are you buying so much for some random dude I started dating a few months ago?

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 28 December 2002 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I got some CDs - four albums, of which I had three (so particular thanks to Andrew L, the odd one out and a great choice) - and a couple of books. At least two still to come, I believe.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 28 December 2002 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
so then, anyone not get an iPod?

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 December 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(just like to point out that I already had an iPod, the way the media was going on about them, yadayadayada)

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 December 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i got airport and panther. i have to wait to install panther though because i'm a pussy and don't want to take it on myself.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 26 December 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I recommend an archive and install, rather than an upgrade.

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 December 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

my uncle works for apple so i'll let him do it.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 26 December 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

my parents brought themselves and tons of tasty things! Also my uncle got my dad a 'you might be a redneck if' page-a-day calendar!!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't get an ipod. But I did get a mobile and a new stereo and about six DVDs (need to buy a player now) and a copy of Down And Out In Paris And London and a Joseph Heller memoirs thing I didn't even know existed and I DIDN'T GET A SATSUMA FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 24 YEARS!

Best Christmas ever!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, I DID get an iPod. That was like the only "big" thing I got. But Sarah got me Space Ghost and Father Ted on DVD and a nice shirt and hat and a gamelan cd.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't get an iPod, but my brother did. I loaded 10GB of my AAC files on it so he could try the thing out, but I'm pretty sure he didn't like any of the ones he listened to (All-Girl Summer Fun Band, Imperial Teen, Van Morrison and Deltron 3030)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

a lovely ceramic teapot from the ex (tho we couldn't wait and swapped last week - i gave him a big pornographic book of rock gear including a TOPLESS exploded-diagram fender twin! PHWOAR!),
very cleavage-y top from flatmate,
9L stock-pot and tops featuring a VESPA and PUZZLE-BOBBLE DINOSAUR from me (sigh),
big tray strawberries from the lady whose cats i'm minding,
pretty soap/guest towel/nz red + diary/choccies from work,

as mentioned elsewhere, i have been STIFFED by the family once again - mother lent(!!) me money towards bills & father reneged on last month's promise of a computer (no surprise, this is xmas tradition 2000-03) then sent me text on xmas eve saying he was renewing my domain name (which had expired & i already renewed on the 20th). both put in fairly detailed requests for what they wanted for xmas, tho!

oh, Pepper the cat brought me a blackbird! bless.

petra jane (petra jane), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I got some bath salts and a little rock zen garden from my bartenders/coworkers. Oh and a Hello Kitty UNO game from a customer.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

some stupid crap i don't really want and nothing that i did want. same as always, then.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, would you like the hideously dismembered corpses of my close family? i'll giftwrap 'em!

petra jane (petra jane), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. i can kick them then, and work some frustrations out.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(realy answer: ugly sweater. ugly boxer shorts which will likely be too small for my now gigantic fucking ass. one copy awful new missy elliot cd. one gift certificate: gap. [wtf]. one gift certificate: gym. [think someone is trying to tell me something?])

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a deal! just let me find enough bloodstain-red wrapping paper in the Boxing Day sales...

petra jane (petra jane), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

gin and clippers and some knick knacks and a nice bedspread cover

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i got an ipod and a bunch of early hitchcock films, yay. also a disgusting sachet as a stocking stuffer, ew.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and also cabaret voltaire - methodology: 74/78 attic tapes, which is the only good thing.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

no ipod here, either. i got a digital camera (which i'd picked out online) and my surprise gift from my mom was a hoodie with my initial on it...which i'm not sure about. but it was a nice thought!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 26 December 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 December 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. TTT, but I was only kidding. F. told me you helped pick out the Pringle whore brolly, cheers!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 December 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think muttered disparaging things about the class significance of pringle is more apt.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Friday, 26 December 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I did a lot better this year than in years past -- nothing that I'm immediately itching to put in the Goodwill bag:
A set of Calphalon bakeware
A set of dishes (not sure if I'm going to keep these because I already have a "nice" set of dishes)
A Coach handbag
A handbag with "Harrods" embroidered on it (my mother and aunt visited the UK earlier this year)
The newest Chicago style manual
The Velvet Goldmine soundtrack
A mess of Reese's peanut butter cups (my mother doesn't like these, so she buys them for Halloween in case any kids come trick-or-treating, and the leftovers go into my and my sister's Christmas stockings)
An orange.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 26 December 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel like I made out like a bandit this year.

* Some lovely-smelling body lotion and soap from Bath & Body Works
* Various bits of candy
* An angel pin
* A special planner thingy with a calculator built in
* Various nightgown-y stuff
* A purse for formal-ish events
* My favorite scent from The Healing Garden (White Teatherapy!)

AND THE LONG-PROMISED NEW COMPUTER! Hurrah! I need to start up and complete Operation Bedroom Organization before setting up the new computer, but once everything's set up, I will have a 7000 series Compaq Presario with an 80GB HD (hurrah!), an AMD Athlon processor that's bound to be faster than the one I've got on this computer (hurrah!), 256MB RAM (hurrah!!), a DVD-ROM (hurrah!), a 24x max CD-RW (hurrah!), a 17" monitor (hurrah!), JBL speakers (hurrah!), and Windows XP pre-installed (hurrah!), not to mention the three-year warranty that comes along with the computer. It is far better than the NEC Ready 9701SE system that I have at present. (The only thing I'm currently satisfied with here is the 30GB HD that I had to buy and install back in 2001 when my old [2GB] HD bit the dust.) </gush>

So I'm sure you know what I'm going to be doing tomorrow. ;)

(BTW, my mother was the one who gave me the computer. I LOVE MOM.)

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 26 December 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

j.lu, I adore the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack. OMG. :) :) :)

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 26 December 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

mario kart, some cds, transformers DVD, some other stuff, a cold.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 26 December 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Mom sent me a gift card for JC Penney. She does this all the time; apparently she has an odd sort of selective deafness which only kicks in when I am saying the words, "I hate JC Penney."

Other relatives gave me money. Friends gave me candy and I gave them candy. One friend gave me a stuffed animal mouse, thinking himself witty and clever because of my domestic mouse troubles. That is all.

jewelly (jewelly), Friday, 26 December 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and my little brother gave me a portrait of me which he drew from a photograph using art pencils. He's 14 years old and absurdly talented. The portrait almost looks like a black and white photo except he did some subtly surreal things with perspective and stuff. It's the coolest present of all. I still have to frame it though, maybe they sell frames at JC Penney.

jewelly (jewelly), Friday, 26 December 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that drawing sounds really cool jewelly.

My best friend just gave me a Lisa Simpson lamp. cool, I guess. He kept telling me how he had the perfect gift planned out and for some reason I thought it would be the first season of Jackass on DVD. *sigh*

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 26 December 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

  • Ugly socks
  • Ugly brown jumper
  • Belle & Sebastian DVD
  • Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

my flatmate gave me a "funsize" pack of m&ms; i gave her some cokebottleshaped gel-candy-things. fuckin' a.

etc, Friday, 26 December 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to hear that Sam. Perhaps your best friend found himself in a sitcom type situation where he knew you were getting him an awesome gift so he told you he was getting you an awesome gift, and made elaborate arrangements to have some famous celebrity come sing on your doorstep or something, but the plans fell through and then he and his other friends had various amusing misadventures trying to get you something that would live up to your expectations and then the final mishap somehow resulted in a Lisa Simpson lamp.

jewelly (jewelly), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Eyetoy, some money for clothes which I spent on Monday, Davidoff aftershave, too many sweets, the Kylie album, and some money from various relatives.

The clothes were the best, I got navy levis twist cords, a t-shirt and a new jacket. All in all an ok Christmas.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you're right Jewelly. I believe his real plan was to have Bam Margera build a skate park in my bedroom but this fell through.

I gave him the Spirited Away DVD, btw.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot the best part of this Christmas was probably having my brothers son here, he's 5 months and it made everything so much more entertaining.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

some money (not much)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

you found looney tunes golden collection used! thats encouraging

kephm, Tuesday, 30 December 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Trust me, I was utterly shocked. People are strange.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

from mom: $100, some cookies.
brother: a neat-o spy pen that records 10 sec of voice, a no-name bottle of whiskey.
dad: a 2004 daily planner with his birthday marked in it (all i did was call him)(yes i know i am a BAD SON but really xmas is a fucking awful pigass holiday enough without 'hint gifts'), he had earlier given me $200 for new tires that i needed.
dad's girlfriend: the clapper.

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

christmas sucked. I did get a nice second digital camera from my wife and then I went and bought both of us iPods because I am weak in the face of marketing. Otherwise we got nada! Fucking cheese knives from my brother in law after spending a shitload on his mess of kids and a set of expensive towels for him and his wife. Next year they ain't getting shit! likewise our sisters did not bother to buy us anything because though they apparently have no problem running themselves into debt buying themselves stuff, they are "too poor" to buy christmas presents for anyone other than their friends. Fuck all that! I fee like a 12 year old.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Xmas was very cool.

I got a multi-stone ring, v. cool (amethyst, garnet, citrine, smoky topaz, peridot, moonstone)

A really cool gold bracelet where the links are made up of little tiny delicate hearts. i should take a pic of that one actually, it's quite unusual.

A blown glass (!!) pendant. i *love* art glass so thing was majorly cool for me. it is disc-shaped, with multi-colored whorls.

An azure malachite ring with silver filagree around it

It was jewelry from the sky! Yay!

Other stuff was more mundane, but still just as appreciated:

Potpourri
Electric can opener
Etched crystal martini glasses
Really cute wine-bottle stoppers with silver grapes on top

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The best boyfriend in the entire world

Allyzay, Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately, I had a breakup with the woman I've been seeing right before the holidays, so I didn't get anything deeply meaningful or romantic - but I also didn't shell out to buy her jewelry or a big TV or something...

That said, I love my Amazon wishlist!

books:
'Ecrits'
(the new translation of the Lacan survey - but don't worry, it remains utterly impenetrable!)

'Genius Moves: 100 Icons of Graphic Design'
'Graphic Style: From Victorian to Digital'
(illustrated design history books by Steven Heller et al)

'Joel Sternfeld: Stranger Passing'
(my favorite photo portraits of all time)

'Designs On The Land: Exploring America From the Air'
(an excellent book that Gareth pointed out to me on his L.A. visit!)

dvds:
'The Work of Director Michel Gondry'
(his explanation for the Daft Punk "Around the World" video from the 'D.A.F.T.' dvd was incredibly inspiring for me artistically - I can't wait to spend some time with this)

'Mahler'
(a very odd movie about the composer by Ken Russell)

music:
Alizee - 'Mes Courants Electriques' ("He owns a complete set of her works")

Dolly Parton - 'Mission Chapel Memories: 1971-1975' (the same thing that Mary got! - how great is it?! - I've just decided "The Bargain Store" is one of my top ten favorite songs of all time!)

random:
nice shirt from my Aunt (she's surprisingly good about finding me clothes)
robe from same (I've already got two so I gave it to my Dad)

future items from gift certs:
'Glen Campbell: The Capitol Years 1965-1977'
a beautiful topcoat which I'm sure will be completely useless in L.A.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Playstation 2 plus a few games (F1 career, Starsky and Hutch)
Sony CD/MP3 player
Concert for George DVD + CD
Various books
Various smellies
Various clothes

All in all a good day.

The sales of course were far more fun, except that I was placed in the queue at Next in Cardiff at 6:50am and got served at 8:40.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"smellies"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

'Smellies' is BriTwee for soaps, bubble bath, aromatherapy, and other boudoir products.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ah! thx.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

How is the Alizee, Spencer? I only have the other one.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

'Mahler'
(a very odd movie about the composer by Ken Russell)

oooo!

Spencer, you do know who did costumes for that?

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

How is the Alizee, Spencer? I only have the other one.

It's just as good as the first one. 3 awesome singles. I will make you a copy!

Spencer, you do know who did costumes for that?

no! who? who?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

A toaster. And Pirates of the Caribbean on DVD.
And a girlfreind gave me a Dangermouse T-shirt - because of the initials.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer, that would be so nice and awesome and I'd be forever grateful.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer: Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

that would be so nice and awesome and I'd be forever grateful

dude, I have a full on frenchie mix that I'll send too!

Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, Spencer, I knew that was your list before I scrolled down. I love the Bargain Store too.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

WAIT WAIT Spencer do you know what I got for Christmas? Your digital camera! I'm imitating you. I might've told you this already in some context or another.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, was the porch pic taken with it?

and Mary, I've posted this story on ILM a couple times but it bears repeating, Bilinda Butcher auditioned for My Bloody Valentine by singing "The Bargain Store"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that porch pic was taken by Tom's mom with her digital camera. I have not yet ventured to try to upload the handful of pictures I took because my computer is so sketchy lately that I don't trust it to not destroy anything I plug into it.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

did you get the case for it? it's called the PSC-50 and it's about $9 on Amazon - it's very worth it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Shut up asshole, Office Depot was sold out.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!!! I couldn't find it either and then, lo and behold, my Aunt order's it for me from my Amazon wishlist.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

There are cases for cameras??! You mean my cameras aren't supposed to be beaten to shit and covered in scratches and black marks??!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Stuff like that is always such a pain, and this time of year it's horrible because every bricks-and-mortar store you go to is basically sold out of everything except barbecue potato chips and caffeine-free diet coke in the cash register mini-fridge. I have bought the last item in stock of so many things in the last month it's ridiculous. Hmm, maybe I need to go to 'lunch.'

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I just realized you mentioned the full on Frenchie mix. You realize you promised that to me like 4 years ago now, right? I really should make you some mixes, I totally meant to when you were in town but forgot completely. Also my computer is shit. I honestly never thought of camera cases before, I don't know why I didn't think to purchase any because I'm already starting to worry that my new one is going to be beaten to hell in my purse. I have yet to figure out what exactly is IN my purse that results in all this external damage.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

There are cases for cameras??! You mean my cameras aren't supposed to be beaten to shit and covered in scratches and black marks??!

you're actually not supposed to even take them out of the box!

and yeah Tom, everything is really picked over as all these sissy retailers keep their stocks lean.

I haven't bought anything for anybody though, so I kind of feel like shit when I realize how much I like the stuff I got.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 26 December 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't opened any of mine yet: other than I think three evenings out, I'm basically home on my own all the time for 11 days. I don't have a lot of presents to open, and I'm pretty depressed (most of you will know about this illness) and I'm going to resist until I kind of need a boost. I'm pretty certain I will absolutely love one of them (I believe it is one of three things, any of which will be wonderful), so I'm saving that one until last. I don't know how long this plan will last me...

Bullshit.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 26 December 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a knock on the door, complete with my 2 dogs barking at 6:30 a.m. My wife had called the neighbors house from work to rouse me because her car battery had died. Oh yeah, we have a phone, but I'm unreachable when asleep. Good thing the neighbors are early risers. So, in hope that maybe this was her way of telling me that she had won the lottery, I sped off to jump start her car. I haven't been quite the same sice. And no, no lottery winner. Of course it would help if we bought a ticket now and then.

also:

Buffy Sainte Marie - Up Where We Belong
Kinks - Arthur
Stones - Jump Back: 71-93
50 clam$
Cailler's chocolate
and some thrivin' home-made bread along with other assorted baked delights

A good day, for sure. Merry Christmas y'all.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 26 December 2004 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I must have been a Good Girl all year, because Santa has been very kind to me. My haul of presents includes :

A pink iPod
Shower radio/CD player
An electric wok
Various bottles of booze - bacardi, Baileys, champagne (do people think I am an alcoholic or something?)
Various books, CDs and DVDs
Lots of gorgeous pampering stuff, body lotions, bath gels, lovely shampoos etc. New Year's Resolution = to be nicer to myself, so these will be part of The Plan.

I too received a Le Creuset stockpot, but it's the orange one and I am collecting blue. Would it be churlish of me to try and exchange it in the New Year? or am I just being too picky?

C J (C J), Sunday, 26 December 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Also received a teapot in the shape of a red telephone box, which I really do not want. If anyone would like it, I will gladly send it to you.

C J (C J), Sunday, 26 December 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Look Around You DVD

a small stuffed toy Tiger, that I have named Imhotep

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Sunday, 26 December 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I received a completely redone bedroom earlier in the year, as a very early Christmas gift. Aside from that, I received joint presents of cookies and popcorn tins, and an individual gift of a scented candle.

The bedroom... yeah, that was a fairly substantial gift.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 26 December 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Orange is the correct colour for a Le Creuset Pot. They are meant to clash with any kind of post 70s decor.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 26 December 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Setting up an Amazon wishlist this year was fucking smart because Sarah's mom and sister got me the Woody Allen stand-up cd, two Stanislaw Lem books, and the Brian Eno "A Year With Swollen Appendices" book. Sarah got me the first Krazy Kat collection, the Daniel Clowes Caricature book, the RTX album, the Wire "On the Box" DVD/CD (which is awesome), Robocop on DVD, a gift card to the video game store, and a couple of nice sweaters. My parents sent us a set of mixing bowls, which was odd but we actually need them so ok, and a couple of board games, one of which we already have so we're probably going to give it to someone else eventually.

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 26 December 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Wool socks and long underwear! (Okay, I ASKED for those, and I am very happy with them.) Three books, the highlight being The Master and Margarita,, two CDs, one being a klezmer CD so that's new to me, and a scarf, hat, and glove set. also i think some other stuff i forgot.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 26 December 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

xxpost. I know, Ed. But I put such a lot of effort into re-designing/rebuilding/redecorating my kitchen a couple of years ago, and I love it so much, that I was ever-so-slightly niggled that the person who so generously gave me the le Creuset pot had failed to take note of my blue/steel/beech décor and the fact the rest of my le Creuset collection is blue. I don't like things which clash :(

I think I might actually be more annoyed with myself for feeling cross about this, now I think about it. I know it shouldn't matter, but it obviously does which makes me scared I am, deep down, some kind of obsessive perfectionist control freak where my cookware is concerned. It's a bit of a worry.

I think I need to drink some more gin, and not care so much.

C J (C J), Sunday, 26 December 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

oh I got.....

the new Jon Ronson book "The Men Who Stare At Goats", the book about John Peel (which I assume will be good), and my Mum bought me the new Adrian Mole book, which is a sort of tradition at this point, still they're usually quite funny. The Jon Ronson is great, I finished it this morning, loved it.

I got new headphones also.

I think my parents plan to financially aid me for a big purchase I am making soon aswell. record decks, at last.

I'll have to try that Amazon wish list thing. I've had The Rise of the British Working Class as my one wish for the last 5 or so years but no one has bought it for me.

CJ, definitely exchange it. My sis collects the red ones and there is no shame in color coordination.

Oddly I know two other people in precisely this situation this year. Both are exchanging for blue.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Live Aid DVD?!?!?!?!?! Matos, that's the first Christmas gift I've seen here I'm actually envious of. OMG. How much of the Ultravox performance did they keep in? Did they show Power Station? I know Duran appear, but only, like, one of their songs made it in. They probably left in all the David Bowie... um, what are the extras like? Do they show all the satellite hookups from around the beginning? Does the set include the "Making of Band Aid" thingy?

*laughs* Um, I have no idea if you're capable of answering these questions already.... But wow. I hope it's REALLY good.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Christmas Eve: On the way to p/u my mom for that family gathering, my car started to make weird noises. Returned home, many phone calls between my mom, my (rich) brother, the host, who doesn't understand my economic incapability, and finally, my boyfriend, whose car was hit last week and is totally out of alignment, agreed to drive his car to my moms and then I would drive her car to my bros. (My boyfriend had been, naturally, reluctant to drive at all).
Transferred all presents and food into my moms car...and it is completely dead. So we drove my boyfriends car to my brother and sister-in-laws, which ended up being ok. (Car wise.) Niece and nephew (3 and 5) were expecting us, the 24th is my moms birthday...we had to be there. And it was an excellent evening.
Christmas Day: Received cash infusion of $250.00 from my boyfriends mom, who always gives us money.
Mon. 27th: Take my car to the fifth mechanic I called, the only one who could fit me in, to be told it's either the alternator or the water pump...from $100.00 - $300.00 for repairs.
And you know what? We spent exactly what we were given in cash and what we now have to spend on my car. And for people like us, that makes it a great Christmas. We have been so broke that the bill might really have made us panic - but it's covered. Hopefully!

Plus we got two $75.00 Barnes and Noble gift cards, and Kevin got a $75.00 EMS card, so we feel really, really wealthy right now.

I had yooge fun buying Jessa a leather jacket, as well. I don't get to spend exorbitant amounts of money on single items often enough. It's a good feeling.

The Encyclopedia of Chicago

i havent gotten around to looking at it yet, since i've been busy getting acquainted with the other gifts first.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I got that for my birthday. It's good reading, subject by subject. As a reference book, it's useless, which is only frustrating because the title says it's a reference book. They should have called it the "Compendium of Chicago" or "The Biggest Book About Chicago Yet" or something.

Are you good at Scrable, Aja?
-- Martin Skidmore (lonewolf.cu...), December 27th, 2004 2:55 PM.

Sorry, Scrabble. But yes, I guess I am. I played it last night and after all the drama of me getting pissed and threatening to put an inappropriate word on the board, I beat my mom and her boyfriend (who were playing as a team against me) 279 to 292. It was all because of my mom's boyfriend putting "exit" on the board with the "x" on "triple letter score" which right there was an automatic 24 points. I used that for my final two words, "ex" and "re". We had a lot of arguement about it, but those are both words. I decided to use the preposition definition for both.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Well let's see:

On DVD, Kurosawa's Ikiru and Yojimbo, Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love and a double disc Brakhage comp, all from Criteirion. Also The Simpsons fourth season set.

The Black Sabbath box set

Neal Stephenson's The Confusion and The System of the World

New blue bedsheets, new shoes, plenty of socks (a Raggett family tradition of sorts, though out of all of us I'm the least flashy when it comes to socks, everyone else seems to go nuts for getting all kinds of wacky socks).

A travel kit of sorts -- very handy mini umbrella (I just lost my old one, oddly enough), new luggage locks, glasses cleaners, passport holder.

Money for a rice cooker and some other goods

A variety of puzzlebooks and a daily calendar for work

...and an expected gift of a Certain Monetary Amount which both I and my sister get every year for us to use as desired -- I'll be banking a fair amount of it to my Italian trip in July, but I'll also be indulging in picking up some DVDs and other goods I've had my eyes on.

Plus a great time at home with my parents and sister, fine meals every day, seeing friends and relatives including my cousin's new baby boy, and just general good times. Carmel in December = beautiful as hell. Wouldn't be anywhere else in the world.

(The two killer gifts of the year -- the backpack that my sister got for future hiking trips and the Complete Far Side set that my mom, sister and I got as a joint gift for my dad. He was well and truly blown away (been a fan since it started in the Bay Area back in 1980 or so), and was almost paralytic with laughter a couple of pages into it.)

$100 gift certificate from Apple

What does that buy you from Apple?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 25 December 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

It's intended to buy the car thing; not made by Apple but through Apple.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 25 December 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Cool.

Anyway, I got an external hard drive, and nice frilly good-smelling grooming products from my girl (because I'm a stinky boy, I imagine), and most of the rest of it's still sitting in the post office to be picked up tomorrow. My family and friends are pretty far-flung.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 25 December 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I got myself the Lenny Bruce box set and the Nightmare Before Christmas DVD (in addition to all the music I've been buying for myself, i.e. a lot of hip hop).

The books I received were the Penguide Guide to Jazz on CD and "Our Band Could Be Your Life."

CDs:
Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Does Your House Have Lions
Coltrane - Live at Birdland
Monk - Best of the Blue Note Years
Mingus - Ah Um
Ornette - Free Jazz and Change of the Century
Minutemen - Post-Mersh, Vol. 1
Dolphy - Out to Lunch

Sennheiser PX200 headphones, a totally unexpected digital camera, and a $30 gift card to Chipotle.

I am pleased. But I gave good gifts as well.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 25 December 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

The biggest, coolest surprise was a poster of Christo's The Gates. It's absolutely gorgeous.
The slipcased set of the first two Complete Peanuts volumes
The Simpsons Season 5 DVD set
Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast Vol. 3
The traditional Get Fuzzy calendar
Grateful Dead, Fillmore West 1969 3CD
Linda Everett, Retro Diner
A cool blank notebook with a 3D hologram cover photo — an aerial view of NYC that is really vertiginous.
Some fingerless gloves, v. handy for this cold office
A bunch of spices, bread mixes, marinades, sauces

And in this year's "gift of the magi" moment, my wife got me a really nice toaster/convection oven and my main client got me a Ronco Showtime Rotisserie. But their functions only overlap a little bit, so it's all cool (except for finding counter space for it all).

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 25 December 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Gardening tools! And a windowsill herb garden with plants I don't have yet, and a big Altec iPod speaker thingy that gets incredibly loud, and lots of froufy ornaments from my mother (because she simply CANNOT understand that I don't decorate or "do" a tree of my own), and anti-tussive detoxifying stop-smoking tea (because she's delusional). Right now the living room is a chaos of family & kids & dog, and the adults are poring over a book that details how we're related to Sam Houston. Dinner still TK!

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 26 December 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

from my brother:
a Paul Frank scarf and beanie set - I live in Texas, there aren't three days out of the year cold enough to justify either one
two of the ugliest shirts I've ever seen from "English Laundry" - one is blue checks, with an embroidered British lion (St. George lion? whatever they're called) on each side of the chest. I think 'chav scum' fashion may have crossed over the Atlantic.

I haven't gotten anything yet, although my mother-in-law is having xmas tomorrow so might get something then. I am totally fine with this, I really don't like obligatory gift-giving. Actually my folks visited a couple of days ago and brought cookies, which was what I really wanted. My father-in-law gave us $200 which is immediately getting regifted to my brothers-in-law who could use it more, and my husband splurged on a camcorder after our kid was born, so that's our xmas to each other I think. It's good.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 26 December 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

the first two gifts i opened were pretty classic for their sheer 'wtf' value:

from my grandma: a book on dean martin (despite my never having expressed any interest in dean martin! ever!)
from my brother: an exact replica of the one ring from lotr (despite the fact i haven't liked lotr since i was 12!)

the rest:
"the american presidency" by clinton rossiter
the first volume of bill clinton's autobio
edmund morris's teddy roosevelt biography
the compact xtc
the complete peanuts 55-58 box
two shirts, some notebooks, candy, etc

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 26 December 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

My Chanukah jackpot:

PlayStation 2 (the first videogame console I've owned since the Atari 2600 over 20 years ago)
Dance Dance Revolution for the above, with mat
Marzipan
Also a friend came over with some banana bread, and I bought myself a copy of Hungry Planet and a subscription to Wholphin.

What I gave my wife:
A good new suitcase (to replace her shredded one)
Ergonomic mousepad
Yeti #3
The Best American Science Writing 2005
Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers cookbook
A CD-R of Neutral Milk Hotel's Hype City Soundtrack and the newly discovered demos
A pretty-looking day-planner for 2006

I also gave our baby son a copy of Pat the Bunny and some teddy-bear-shaped shoes, and our cat a handmade catnip mouse.

J.D., if the book in question is Nick Tosches' Dino, it's a fantastic book whether or not you have any interest in Dean Martin as such.

Ed (dali), Monday, 26 December 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm expecting that everyone on ILE has already handled a "20Q". (If not, it's like a digital magic eight ball, or...)
We got one for xmas.
It's small, it's round, it's orange, and it is REALLY FUCKING GOOD AT FIGURING OUT THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTION!. So, this morning, my significant other was standing in the middle of the kitchen, hair like heat miser, sheet wrinkly face, with a cup of coffee in his right hand and the 20Q in his left, saying "Shit, it got that one right too.".
other gifts:
*Cash
*Barnes and Noble gift cards
*Smelly soapy girl stuff that I'm probably allergic to (skin sensitivities)
*A beautiful plate that my nephew and nieces painted-VERY cool.
*One small snippet of my family geneaology, and an invitation to read more.(150 pages, printed and in a file folder, and it is really wonderful)
I GAVE some really good gifts this year, even though I was very glum aboout the hyper-consumerism and the pressure to buy things.
My nieces and nephews always get good books, and they also got
*The Muppet Show, first season, 24 episodes (I'm so sad that I don't get to watch it with them.)
My sister in law got
* A glass purse. I don't know how to describe it. It's blown glass, it's tortiseshell, and it's a purse. with handles. It's an objet-no practical use. It's a glass purse. enough said. But it's so fucking cool. And she loves it.
My brother (her husband)got:
A Joyce Chen knife. The hatchet knife- it's a really good knife for anyone who chops a lot. It's a slicer/dicer. Plus, the big blade is good for removing the heads and limbs of children. I mean, root vegetables.
So it was a little crazy when the kids, in their frenzy, unwrapped their parents gifts. Me, good aunty, kept saying "Be careful because that is a really sharp knife and it's for your daddy, not for you....!!"
All limbs and digits are intact, thank goodness.
My niece, Sophie, who is four, sang some very lovely songs about the baby Jesus. Here's a sample of her lyrics:
"He was in a manger and it was really cold and he's a nice guy, and I think we all really like him.
Sometimes he was sad but he was just a baby and we all really like him."

I was pretty pleased with the gifts I gave, even the daft singaporean sun hat to my sister, which was only an afterthought as I hadn't brought her anything from singapore, seemed to go down very well. My whole family seemed to be pretty good and the giving and recieving thing this year.

very OTM. baby's first xmas > boring old grownups and their playthings

joseph (joseph), Monday, 26 December 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

If I knew how it knew....it's just really crazy. 20Q. You can find it online as well. I mean, it didn't get "christmas tree", but it got "mother", "alcohol" and CHER! And if it doesn't "get" your question, the alternative answer is generally very funny. My thought was "boyfriend" and the answer was "ninja". Which made my boyfriend happy.
It's a very, very silly toy. But also the first thing you reach for, with the coffee and the cigarette and the mouse. As soon as you wake up. And you might dream about it.
Is it round? Is it orange? Is it evil?
YES! I think I know what you're talking about now....

aimurchie (aimurchie), Monday, 26 December 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

worst xmas ever. my mother brought some random guy that she wants me to MARRY (whom i've never met) to the family house on xmas. i ended up hiding upstairs in fright for almost the entire day!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 26 December 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Eeek!

Ed (dali), Monday, 26 December 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

I got an MP3 player and nothing else. I told the in-laws to donate money to cancer research on my behalf rather than spend money on things I neither want nor need. My parents have done this for years anyway, as do I. The mister wouldn't let me not have anything (but this year he finally relented and didn't buy me anything for my birthday), hence the MP3 player.

I just figure we do enough nice things through the year that we shouldn't have to buy crap for each other just because the calendar says so. It's nice that other people (hey Teeny!) agree with me, because I get looked at like a bloody grinch whenever I try (for the last five years) to explain to my mother-in-law that I don't want a present from her. And I'm not buying any for anyone else. She lives in a big house and goes abroad on holiday about six times a year? What is the point of me spending £20 on perfume/jewellery that she probably won't like and could easily afford herself. I'd rather any spare money I have went to a good cause.

But still, I now have an MP3 player!

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 26 December 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

I got a fringe for Christmas. My friend Annie gave it to me, on her fourth glass of Champagne. She then told me that she had never cut hair before. It's neat, though.

Zoe Espera (Espera), Monday, 26 December 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Giving me gifts makes other people happy, so I don't get too worked up about consumerism even though I could easily do without that aspect of X-mas. The only time anyone in my family tried to do the donation thing instead it didn't go down very well, but getting loot and obligation gifts really doesn't thrill me either. This year getting to spend time with my extended family was by far the best present I got, for real-- it was a very emotionally rewarding Christmas. I still got a crapload of stuff though:

a couple of checks
gift certificate to reasonably good local record store, gift certificate to reasonably good grocery store in the next county over (mistakes were made, I'll use it anyway), g.c.s to national gas station chain, national book store chain, and national yuppie clothing retailer
a shitload of different boxes of noodles (soba, instant pad thai, etc.)
tiny etch-a-sketch with my name written on it, in place of a label for gifts
cute and dopey stuffed elephant ornament (why an elephant, I dunno), a Snoopy ornament, and a diploma ornament commemorating my graduation, all for that hypothetical future Christmas when I actually bother to have a X-mas tree of my own
a tie (for job hunting, because I only had one before)
A John Waters Christmas
a couple of CDs put out by bands from the Twin Cities that I'd never heard of, including one with a boss cover featuring a pack of polar bears mauling some hunters
comfy Koss headphones
old-fashioned-looking compact radio/record/CD player unit
a sweater

I got one of those 20Q things a couple of days earlier as a gag gift. It was pretty accurate-- it usually got as close an apporximation as possible in 25 questions if it couldn't guess the answer in 20.

I asked my parents for Charles Burns' Black Hole graphic novel

I've been eyeing that up in the stores for a while-- I was really hoping that someone would give me a gift cert to a bookstore so I could go and get it for myself. And now I shall go and get it, along with a couple of series manga things that I wouldn't likely have spent the money on otherwise.

Chris F. (servoret), Monday, 26 December 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I bought my man an Xbox

Me too! Not really for Xmas, just as a present. I'd have bought it otherwise as well.

We also bought digital TV subscription, but again we'd have gotten it even if it wasn't Xmas. It was just cause we had been planning to get it and Lost (season II) will be aired from 2nd of January so we thought "what the hell."

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 26 December 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I also gave our baby son a copy of Pat the Bunny

I was NUTS for this book when I was a baby!

(And Geeta, that's f*cking heinous.)

Je4nn3 ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Monday, 26 December 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I got a one am trip to the emegency room (bleeding inner ear) which is something I've never had before. Later, pleasant plains gave me a sidekick II which I'm posting on right now. Its purty.
Also, a bitchin heart-shaped wedgewood type box with a cheerleader on top; DDR2, guitar hero and katamari damacy from pp's mommy and a ton of urban outfitters clothes from my relatives.

i am so sick of her wacked out guilt trips.

At least it's only my gran who does this. But oh boy did she top herself this year. Geeta, I'm sorry to hear your mom inflicts you with'em. Looking at my parents: you'll survive. :-)

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

kinell, sorry geeta and ally, hope it gets better!

i got a HUGE STACK OF BOOKS (no one will see me for 2mth) inc:

'dune' trilogy!
'stranger in a strange land'
2nd and 3rd parts of asimov's foundation series
neal stephenson's 'the system of the world' (that i was salivating over robster's copy of in the pub the other week)
haruki murakami's 'kafka on the shore'
orpham panuk's 'snow'
vikram seth's 'an equal music' (that i hummed and hawed over getting for the russian but decided to go for something else instead)
'beyond black' by hilary mantel
a book of poetry called 'mixed emotions' that i couldn't work out why i'd been given it until i opened the page with a little marker in it - my grandma t is now a published poet!

johnny cash sun recordings 3cd set
the becoming-obligatory howie's t-shirt - this one has possibly my favourite design evah to be put on a t-shirt but i think it's a bit big, may swap it for a smaller one
a battery-operated lurid green and blue tortoise wot FLASHES and SINGS and runs around the room! the cat that lives down the road came in last night for a while and my bro switched the tortoise on at it and the poor thing nearly shat itself, shot across the room like i've never seen it do before...
2 pairs fingerless gloves with the bit that hooks over the fingers to make them mittens
super-hardcore waterproof cycling gloves
one of those bike pumps that stands on the floor and has a pressure gauge (hurrah!)
super-hardcore waterproof tent-in-clothing-form-kagoule-thing built to withstand the cambodian monsoon (handy for glastonbury)
2 knitted things the same from grandma h that i couldn't work out what the hell they were or when i would find occasion to wear them, like little mini-tabard things with a roll-neck. then a note fell out "to keep you warm on the bike" - apparently they are called wind-cheaters and she is a genius after all. and matching hats
super-hardcore front bike light that i have already blinded everyone with and used to find my way through the insane tangle of wires in the dark down the side of the settee to the wireless router
a scented candle in a really pretty pot
a dalek!

and some £££.

and, for the first time ever, a real appreciation of the sheer amount of work and planning and stressing that goes into making christmas run properly. i mean, obviously it's a shitload of work and i always offer to help with whatever needs doing (although 9 times out of 10 i get sent out of the kitchen with a flea in my ear), but i never really realised quite how much.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

- iPod shuffle
- lotsa cute pins and things from sisters
- a twee-looking recipe box
- pajamas
- some really REALLY HIDEOUS sketcher boot things. they weigh about 12 pounds per shoe and are really, really.. wow, bad. I reckon I can at least use them when there's a blizzard outside.
- a really terrible "inspirational" notebook that has like a picture of a sunset on the front with the word "Reflections" floating in the clouds. I think my mom thinks I like shit like this.
- loads of fancy makeup
- stella mccartney perfume
- x-mas bonus from work
- portable dvd player from work
- weird scented pillow decorated in embroidery in the shape of cupcake s (from work)

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

- one bottle of dior's addict parfum from bff
- art from sister

- and a little pocket money from dad/mum/stepmum for my trip to chicago this week
- loads and loads of food from relatives who envision my sis and i as starved orphans.

Home & car charger for shuffle

After reading aimurchie's post, I went and bought myself the first season of the Muppet Show.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to mention more tea than I already mentioned before, I have so much tea now - one person at work gave me tea from Mariage Freres, it's fantastic. Also white tea, and some lavender soap/wash/bath salt stuff.

i am so sick of her wacked out guilt trips.
I hear you. When in a bad mood (often) my mom (sometimes) gets on my shit about how when she gets cancer I won't visit or do anything or care and will be glad when she dies etc. (She does not have/has never had cancer.) This makes me angry & not guilty like it used to though.

Quincie, I will have to have people over to dinner too, now that I have all this neat new cooking stuff. I have to practice making a good couscous to go with whatever I make in the tagine..

Dar1a I have one very treasured piece of Le Creuset--an oval dutch oven in blue. I love it to death because it is beautiful in a functional non-frou frou way and its construction makes up for any number of cooking sins (e.g., burning the hell out of stuff). I'm sure whatever you make in your tagine will rock!

quincie, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

My parents got me a fantastic coat. I am thinking of "The Overcoat" by Gogol. I am very grateful to them.

youn, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

I saw a fantastic Le Creuset teapot, which was blue.

youn, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

I think my mother has that teapot! She only likes things that come in blue hence loves LeCreuset and Kitchenaid. And Laura Ashley, but we don't talk about that.

But then tragedy struck (DUN DUN DUN), and the screen light began to flicker here and there...and then a few hours later it was continually dark. We have to send it to the motorola hospital now. I am very sad that my Cinderella phone turned into a pumpkin. I hope she returns all fixed soon.

Dang....these are out of stock in many places! How is it?

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

I played with my little sister. The drums take a lot of practice because hitting the foot pedal is hard. I don't know if it's because of the way the foot pedal is made - you can't really rest your foot on it without it being pressed. The guitar is a bit different than the guitar hero guitar but it's basically the same. The microphone is very fun. The way they incorporated it is by singing to words and a line that comes from the right side of the screen --__---__ ___--- -__ <kinda like that.

You definitely get a workout by playing the drums. The song selection in pretty dang good. Except I can only play the first 10 songs or so until I unlock the rest. You start off with some good ones though.
