After attempting to RAID the Gloucester HMV have come to the conclusion that this place has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Took up to counter 2 x Avengers DVDs (buy one get one free!), 1 x Mr Scruff cd and 1 x Pixies cd (2.99 and I don't have a cd copy ov Doolittle) and then they say "sorry these dvds aren't two for one" in a VERY RUDE MANNER so I say sod it cancel them all and walk out in a grump.

I am waiting till my return to London.

I've bought quite a few CDs this year, some being as a result of recommendations from people I know (whose opinions I respect) on various message boards. I'd never even heard of Fiona Apple, for instance, but I listen to her CD a lot now.

I tried to fight my way around HMV in Oxford this morning, but it was mobbed so I gave up. I was feeling too delicate due to a surfeit of wine last night.

i bought only a disky 3-cd ska compi from hmv having already bought "more greatest hits of the 80s" (disky, 8 cds) and "hits hits hits 80s/90s" (bmg, 6 cds) in the 2 for 22 at virgin last week. spotted in ox st virgin yesterday, "wow that was the 60s" (disky 8 cds), the companion set to "wow, that was the 70s" which i'm sure will interest certain readers.

meg, on the other hand, went slightly cd bonkers yesterday buying the QOTSA album and let there be rock by AC/DC from fopp (and the virgin film guide for a fiver, which i had to then lug around for the rest of the afternoon), "the distillers" (me neither) album from virgin and a human league "best of" (which has neither don't you want me nor keep feeling fascination on), "funky beats and sampled breaks" and "punk legends - the american roots" from hmv...

Triple vinyl pack compiled by Sasha and John Digweed.Sealed and numbered sleeve #0359,released September 1999,deleted May 2000.How it ended up in the racks of Virgin last Friday I will never know,but the sale price sticker said £9.99,and the last time I saw this album for sale was on eBay for forty quid.

WE don't have an HMV anywhere near where I live but I will tell you that on Boxing Day, the Hitchin branch of WHSmiths was selling DVDs at half price. But not only that, their tills were messing up and they were giving DVDs to us as buy on get one free!!! So I got four DVDs for £20 including: Fight CLub (2disc set), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Lord of the Rings (Animated version) and Caligula.

I bought: the Nilsson two-on-one That's The Way It Is / Knnillssonn; Riddim Driven: Diesel; a Studio 1 specials comp called Juck's Incorporation and Flysing Shoes by Townes Van Zandt. Total cost: £9.96.

Was a bit disappointed with this "biggest sale ever" because in previous sales I've walked away with upwards of 30 Cds. Maybe Chris and Vicky just got there before me.

Yeah this is the downside of living up North -- year-round CDs for a fiver, but the sale stock in Virgin and HMV is always pants, just discounted stuff, no real bargains i.e. the 2 pound CDs. (Or if there are any, it's always dodgy rave comps.) Although HMV in Edinburgh is currently the only place you can buy dancehall here: I think Fopp boycott it because they are beard-stroking hipster reggae-rockists. But that just means all the greensleeves rhythm albums for fifteen quid a throw. And I'm not paying fifteen pounds for what is basically THE SAME SONG OVER AND OVER AGAIN. (See also why I won't pay money for a Spiritualised CD, but that's another story...)

The HMV in Cardiff is selling that Prince "Emancipation" for £3 anyway, so what's the prob? Wish there was a Fopp here. The Cardiff HMV sale is direr than hell, all the usual tosh at not really that cheap prices, with some strange choices to entice you through the door - "Ogden's nut gone flake" for £3? I wouldn't mind so much if they'd put the new Dylan SACD editions in the sale instead of the crappy old ones but no.... sigh.

Actually the Newport HMV sale is even worse than Cardiff, I looked on the way home. No cheap CDs at all, at least last time I managed to pick up a few Cabaret Voltaire CDs for £2 each, not a hope this time.

Cardiff HMV = k-rub. The shop design is horrid - too thin and you bump into people all the time.
Do you shop in Spillers, Rob? I like Spillers q lot even though it's impossible to find anything. That massive stall in the market *should* be good, but it rubbish. Do you agree? The Cd selection is large but crap and the vinyl is a real mess. Last time I was there I looked through most of the vinyl and there were loads of rareties that you could flog for £££ on ebay, but they were in dreadful condition - ripped sleeves, scratched and warped. All those boxes look as if they have been stored one on top of the other at some point in the open air. It breaks my heart!

Other k-classic things about Cardiff mkt - the fish cakes from the stall downstairs near the entrance and the pet stall at the top opposite the records. We've bought 2 kittens from there and bloody good cats they've turned out to be.

The HMV Sale may well be the biggest ever, and I will pop along soon, but I bet the large majority is the same stuff as in the last few sales. There's a new sale at Virgin too, which is undoubtedly smaller but I found lots of stuff I'd not seen very cheap before, including quite a few at 99p - I bought a Three Johns comp for that, which may prove to have been a waste of money. The Three Johns tune I fondly remember, Torches Of Liberty, isn't on it. I came away with about ten CDs, I think.

Kellys in the market is crap as hell, they seem to think they are selling rarities but they aren't, and if you go there trying to sell anything they'll offer you peanuts. Their website is crap too. When it was run by the original Mrs Kelly in the 70s and 80s it was great, she hadn't the faintest idea of pricing policy, you could get really good stuff dirt cheap, she would also stock things truly alphabetically (eg, Robert Palmer under R) then she sold out to whoever runs it now and it's dreadful. Oddly enough, I work opposite the market, we all go across there for lunch - like I'm going to do in about five minutes.

The only fondness I have for HMV is my first record purchase ever was from there, but that was in the neon days of 1983. 20 years on and it's not as good as it should be. Spillers is by far the best record shop in Cardiff, always has and always will be, and the staff are really nice too and know their stuff. They refused to serve my Dad when he wanted to buy a Neil Young bootleg set from there a few years ago, thinking this middle aged bearded chap was someone from the BPI or Inland Revenue, so I had to go along with him and buy it for him the next day explaining that I - a long valued and well known customer - had him as my dad and he wasn't going to bust them for selling boots, he just wanted the sodding Neil Young set.

Playing on the looped 'HMV Sale' thing they do in HMV Oxford (not St) was 'Strings of Life' by Rhythm is Rhythm. But couldn't find the actual source CD. Anyone know where it can be sought (ideally on dodgy rave compo)?

They used to have Christopher's Records in the High Street! Totally rubbish except I bought a mint copy of Modern Eon's 'Fiction Tales' there about 3 years ago.

They have...erm....Jenner Park - home of Barry Town! They have... Barry Island! They have... Harvey's fish and chip shop in Vale Street! Dolphin Books at Barry Dock!

Actually the Knap is nice. My in-laws live down there, overlooking the sea. Lovely place.

See, at least Barry had some decent things to its name, like a beach and shops, whereas Penarth was and is and ever will be a street or two of charity shops surrounded by old peoples homes. In retrospect, Barry Island is far nicer now than I remember it being at the time. Penarth is just... ugh! Imagine having to grow up in such a dire place. No wonder I've got issues. 8-)

The DVDs section upstairs in Oxford Street was more like it. Every Carry On film for a fiver each, with commentary and extras too not just some cheapo release - I got a couple of those and a DVD of Pressburger/Powell's A Canterbury Tale for a fiver too. There was all sorts of box set shite that tempted me too but it can wait until the next biggest sale ever I think.

A Canterbury Tale is one of my favourite films - good choice, Tom.

I was in the Oxford St HMV last week and was amazed at all the vinyl. There was stacks of it, old and new. Plenty for only 12 quid or so. Some of it looked so pretty. And 7"s with hand written descriptions on, like the dance 12" racks! It was v.exciting. Maybe buying LPs again and then downloading a digital version from the net is the way I want to go. Better still, why don't they just slip in a copy of the CD for the 30p or whatever it costs them?

Shame, did wish i could have made it into a branch while I was in London. BUt the main one i would have headed for closed down in the middle of last year. Glad I heard about that before fighting through the Oxford st crowd to get up there. THink I asked the guy at the FOPP counter if he was aware of what time it closed or something.

I've been visiting HMV since I was a young teen. Remember going into the Bond st branch when i wasa moddy boy.
Really bought a lot of great stuff from the Dublin branches throughout the 90s.

So is the Westfields branch going too?
