jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

2) The Delgados' cover of Last Rose Of Summer. Which those with P2P gubbins need to get, now, by the way.
3) Am I fuck as like.
4) Some things have gone amazing (uni radio & paper, getting to write for CTCL, Hate... ah, Hate...). But an awful lot more things have gone very badly wrong (uni course, money, losing touch with my mates because I was too bloody jittery, continual self-doubt + realisation that I'm just not a very good person + wondering just why I'm fucking up opportunities through sheer stupidity and laziness all the fucking time), and I'm just not looking forward to the next couple of months at all.
5) Minesweeper/Solitaire/Spider fucking Solitaire. I don't much enjoy any of them yet spend hour upon hour playing the bastards... I need to see someone about this.

Tapper!

Jen (nstop), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

1.Reading a Hayne's workshop manual for the Toyota Supra(all models,2.8 & 3 litre 78-89).I have to change the steering rack on one and it doesn't look pretty.

2.I was listening to Premier 88.6 fm,a Pirate station near me.But they are running pre-recorded shows plugging an event on the 16th of November.Bit of a poor show, you would think that they would have DJ's banging the door down to play, when you think about all the house parties that are going on tonight that might want to tune in.Shame.I'm going to have a rummage through the racks to find some mix CD's that I haven't heard for a while.Either that or I might have a mix myself. But that requires effort, and might be too much for me.Must lay off those Jamaican Woodbines.....

3.Me and my lovely Lady Speed are staying home tonight. We have all our supplies in,and have enough to keep us amused for the evening(stop those sniggers at the back). We have a few friends visiting our place at various times later, and may even venture out in the early hours to my brother's flat. His afterparties are the stuff of legends.

4.I couldn't say I'd had a good year but it has ended well.2002 and me got off to a bad start when I realised that I was about to turn 30 and got a real complex about it!It still amazes me how worked up I got over something so trivial.Seemed pretty heavy at the time, though. Not long after that,I had to take my beloved car off the road as I had niether the time or the money to get it through the MOT.I had a break-up in my relationship, and was cut of a buisiness partnership that I had personally devoted many long hours to with nothing to show for it.But all things happen for a reason. As I was no longer spending all my waking hours chasing the extra bucks,I had time to rescue my relationship, work on my car and slag around on the web.So while some aspects of 2002 are most definitely dud,at least I can say that the start of 2003 is looking to be a bit classic!

5.As for video games,Need for Speed:Hot Pursuit 2 has been borrowed from our mate,so will be tried for size and probably ditched in favour of Gran Turismo 3.Quality!

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Reading: I just finished 'The Gobbler' by Adrian Edmondson (if anyone else has read this, could they please tell me, is it semi-autobiographical, and what did you think? I guess I ought to just look it up.) I'm reading some Agatha Christie interminable rubbish. I'm absolutely desperate, I was just kneeling in front of the bookshelf flicking through a badly written book by Coerte VW Felske and wondering whether I ought to read another Nick Hornby book before I came to this thread. I don't think I could stand to read anything written more than ten years ago, unless it's about rich people - no not even that.
Listening to: nothing
Going out?: friend came over, took photos. Bad conversation.
Good year?: whatever

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 03:05 (twenty-three years ago)

'averages out to meh' is going to be my answer to everything ever now. Or possibly just 'meh' and a limp dismissive wave.

A good year???

1. What are you reading?

1. Repeated Takes by Michael Chanan
2. Mahalia Jackson

4. 3 weeks of it was really really good. But otherwise, no, it was dreadful.
5. I just finished a game called Syberia for PC. It was very pretty and emotional but it was also too linear.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary, I'm going to read that book - it sounds just like the sort of thing I'm reading at the moment. If anybody else has any 'modern' books they recommend please tell me.

maryann (maryann), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 07:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"Repeated Takes by Michael Chanan"

I really rather liked this book. I think there is a dearth of books that deal critically with the effects of technological advances (or to more equivocal about it, simply technological changes) on the very essence of an art form. And vice-versa. I only wish that someone would apply Chanan's methodology to a slightly more catholic (small "c") group of music. He seems most interested, like Barthes and Adorno before him, with classical music. If I recall correctly--it's been a few years. Do you like the book so far?

Incidentally Mahalia Jackson is the perfect thing to be listening to while reading this book; she knew how to work a microphone.

(P.S. Have you ever seen "Imitation of Life"?)

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

2. earlier, the Gore Gore Girls; now, a CD of non-album tracks by the Streets
3. a friend from out of town was supposed to call me when she was finished seeing Har Mar Superstar (ugh) at Northsix, and we would attend a party on the upper west side at her friend's apartment. it's almost 3am and she hasn't called. I'm annoyed.
4. yeah. I'm alive, which is good; I'm working a lot, which is good.
5. that FHMUS golf game earlier; nothing now.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 07:51 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmm.... the streets....

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 07:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"It's Come to This" (Streets vs. High Contrast) just ended; now it's "Weak Become Heroes (Ashley Beedle's Love Bug Vocal)," with "Weak Become Heroes (Royksopp's Memory Lane Mix)" next.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

1 - Just finished books by Jeff Noon, Georges Bataille, and Bentley Little. I think I'm reading Eco's Baudolino next.

2 - The 8 Mile soundtrack hasn't left my Discman in a month. If I'm just going out for cigarettes (i.e., will be home in two tracks or less), I put it on track 3.

3 - I stayed in and worked. But I drank while I did so, and called friends to wish them happy new years.

4 - Fuck yes.

5 - I hardly ever play video games, except for Snood 21 on my Infernal Machine. Once in awhile I play Tekken 4 at a friend's, and next time I'm there I'm going to try to nab the TV to play Triple Play.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

1. What are you reading?
Faithless, a collection of stories by Joyce Carol Oates (her 87th book in less than 40 years! Most productive serious literary writer ever, surely?) and an art book called Cezanne By Himself, excerpts from his letters and stuff, and the second Essential Fantastic Four volume.
2. What are you listening to?
Last thing played at home: The Heart Of The Congos. On the walkman is Q-Bert's Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Music.
3. Are you going out?
I went to Andrew L's place with lots of my oldest and best friends, and had a great time.
4. Have you had a good year?
No; but on the other hand in January or February I'd have offered pretty long odds against my surviving 2002, so the fact that I'm here and much more optimistic about next year makes it something of a success.
5. What video games are you playing?
What sort of fool question is that to ask a 43 year old? I'm impressed by the advanced graphics in Minesweeper. Actually, I did start a game of Space Cadet about seven hours ago. 139 million and 21 balls left - I expect I'll throw most of them away, as usual. I'm good at these old fashioned games that I understand.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

1. "This Beautiful Room is Empty" by Edmund White

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

1. What are you reading?

I read Gibson's Pattern Recognition today and picked up the 3rd and 4th Gregory Keyes books (the Empire of Unreason series, iirc). I've just finished reading a thousand and some odd pages on Augustine and Maimonides, so would pretty much settle for anything this side of Super Mario Slash as a palate-cleanser.

2. What are you listening to?

Mes Courants Electriques, Saskatchewan, and Try This

3. Are you going out?

For NYE? Lindsey will have just gotten home that day after two weeks with her family; we'll have champagne and I'll make creme brulee.

4. Have you had a good year?

Not as productive as I would like, but yeah. I think I'm still adjusting to the whole "when you have a girlfriend, you can't spend every waking moment working anymore" thing. There's nothing wrong with it, I'm just transitional.

5. What video games are you playing?

Stuck near the end of Metroid Fusion; picked up Mario/Luigi Superstar as my Nanowrimo prize.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Not as productive as I would like, but yeah

... that's got to be some kind of ass ventriloquism biased by the second half of the year, cause I wrote three novels this year. Still doesn't feel as productive, but that's because I haven't written many short stories at all.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

1. What are you reading?

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" by Mark Haddon

An irritating Barry White impersonator outside on 6th Avenue who I have nothing but abject ill-will for.

3. Are you going out?

No, I'm here at work until 4am.

4. Have you had a good year?

There have been massive hills and staggering valleys. Not a year I'd like to live through twice.

5. What video games are you playing?

I sadly haven't played a video game in quite a while, though the last one I did play was invariably "Medal of Honor" on my PlayStation 1.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

1. What are you reading?

Nothing right now, unless UK Masters catalogues count as reading material.

2. What are you listening to?

Exposure on XFM

3. Are you going out?

Started out great, ended up in limbo....though that should change too, beginning in January.

xtc - drums & wires

3. Are you going out?

for new years we will probably have the annual party. otherwise, not much these days.

4. Have you had a good year?

yes. er, no. oh who the fuck knows? can you honestly distill your year down to a "good" or "bad"? a shitload of good stuff happened and a shitload of bad too. they all end up being "okay" ten or twenty or thirty years on, unless something truly trumatic happens.

5. What video games are you playing?

1. The usual - not much beyond multiple newspapers and politix blogs
2. The usual - Garth, Wyclef, Steve Earle, etc.
3. Probably not
4. The calendar year had a good handful of highs, but no, not especially, though there's little I'm justified in complaining about and on balance it may have been better than the prior year, which I can't even remember. It was in part the year of ILX, which I found just over a year ago, and which provided an abundance of entertainment, diversion, humor, music recs, critical thinking, charm, joy, etc., and even some friendship. For all of that, many thanks non-exclusively to Mary, felicity, fiddo, Ally, Tom, amateurist, gareth, geeta, M. Daddino, bnw, Rosemary, JBR, Matos, Tracer, teeny, blount, trife, Dan P, Tad, Andy B, Paul K, Yanc3y, hstencil, tobias, Miccio, Elvis Telecom, S. Chow, jel, daria g, nabisco, Diamond, o. nate, Sean C, Bryan, NA/Sarah M, Kim, j. lu, pinefox, Aimless, Mel W, gygax!, nickalicious, Pete S, Frank K, Sasha F-J, dave q, Ned, Hanle y, and everyone now or previously responsible in any way for maintaining and moderating this place. But as much as I love some ILX things, it's getting in the way of some changes I'd like to make so I'm going to try to limit my usage to the year, or at least substantially reduce it.
5. n/a (unless you count the odd game of Snood, forced upon me by a friend who is evil because she did so)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

1. A Frolic of His Own, inspired by the ILE Gaddis thread
2. All my CDs and records are currently in storage, along with my computer & its vast collection of MP3s. So... They play music at my job. And then there's my parents fine selection of CDs which includes your bluegrass, jazz, and neo-Cuban.
3. Dinner with the 'rents, then probably over to a friend's for tapas and sangria. Although I could go to a big party or head to see my cousin's band in Brooklyn. But probably wont.
4. Did some good work in the whole work arena, made it thru the LSAT, got my law school apps in, made a big move, had a semi-successful relationship start & end. On the whole, I'd give 2003 a 7.
5. Watching my fantasy basketball teams hover in semi-mediocrity is as close as I get.

The Hobbit and a book about the Sydney to Hobart sailing race in the 90s that went through a massive storm.

2. What are you listening to?
Lots of radio, Blur and Beach Boys

3. Are you going out?
I'm babysitting my 6 month old niece on new year's eve. I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be- I rarely get to see her, but she's so, so, so adorable. Of course she'll probably fall asleep at 8:30, but I can hold her while I watch a movie or something.

4. Have you had a good year?
Eh. I have my niece now, who is the sweetest little baby. But she's 3000 miles away. My friends have largely moved back to Belltown over the last year, so I see a lot of them now that I don't have to drive to, say, Fremont. Boy and I are still together despite a trip to Antarctica, some very stupid fights, and 2 massively time sucking jobs. I've been trying to find a job in Boston, but nothing interesting has turned up yet.

5. What video games are you playing?
None. :-( I play battleship or tetris on my cellphone in boring meetings, that's it.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 1 January 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I did go out and I had a lot of fun with a whole bunch of actors. They thought I was a freak and one of them told me that I should be a comedic actor. To that I say bullshit as I'm way too prone to cracking up - worse than Jimmy cocksucking Fallon. I told a girl that it's funny to consider jerking off while taking a shit and she thought this was serious business. Is this what parties are generally like?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 1 January 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)
