You all forgot "The Murphys" or whatever that sitcom Ed Byrne wrote was called. And then there was that other comedy show from Jason Byrne...Plank Kenny is such a weak chat show host I fear he may disintegrate in his seat.

Marty Whelan is far more preferable than Pat Kenny. Kenny is Alan Partridge.

This must have been shown over here, as I've seen it. It was a bit shit as I remember.
Gay Byrne is probably best known over here for infinite repeats of Boyzone being arses on his TV show. His show used to be in the post-Countdown Richard-and-Judy slot on Channel 4, I think, and I'm sure I watched it and remember nothing of it except that it was like a low-rent Wogan.

as an adjunct to the bbc thread. i'll take exception to the criticism of the premiership, which is probably the most entertaining thing on irish telly. can't speak for the drama content, i've never really liked any rte comedy. news and current affairs is pretty good.
― Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)
RTE gets shown in my local Irish boozer pretty much nonstop if the footie's not on, and it seems to largely consist of old men playing the fiddle.
― chap, Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)
oh you poor deluded fool...that's the highlights.
― Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)
OTM!
I like TG4's documentaries. I've enjoyed the series where people learn to play the traditional instruments (I think it's called the youth team or something)...
The Panel was good but badly needs Dara O'B back to bring them all under controls and bring the funny. Maxwell is woejus. It also wastes female panellists though one or two I would dearly love to never see on tv again, especially the blonde one who keeps going on about her baby.
Primetime investigates = absolute gold. National treasure as far as I'm concerned.
― hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)
there's a man that's been quiet!
reelin in the years, hands would be my favourite 'programmes' (got RITY 80's boxset, can't believe that you can't get the rest, or 'hands' either), but i'd find it hard to criticise rte on sport, news, etc which is relaly where the national broadcaster should be focusing, i think.
used to have a great record o fgetting in the hot new shows form the US before uk too, i'm not sure if this is still the case though? don't watch as much tv as i once did, and the sky + has me spoilt tbh.
― Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)
Hands is one of the best programmes made by any station anywhere (hands down, ho!) a really elegant piece, its a sacred cow in art colleges though not just because of how everything you learn is gold dust here (it is) but because it is so perfectly crafted. Reelin' in the Years is great and was proof of my sister's belief that the department who put together the montage sequences for movie ads are the most talented in RTE and basically that's what that programme was.
― Take You Down (I know, right?), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)
this is all a bit positive though. so-
fair city. pat kenny.
uh, i don't actually watch enough telly to know any more than that, and i'd be predisposed to dislike these shows, no matter how well they were done anyway.
― Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)
the guy who made hands lives about a mile from my gf's 'home' home.
apparently it's a good bet to be a dvd boxset in time for next christmas, but they'll judge it in terms of requests to the archives.
― Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)
Been busy saving the pigs man. My mission complete I can return to ILX.
I did not know of this Hands. It sounds very good. Will look for DVD set in future. Lives about a mile from GF's home. Hope you've watched that Liv Tyler in Tuscany movie and know what to watch out for. Gots ta keep eyes on these old bohemian types!
Fair City, so bad it's not even worth having on tv for the camp value. Pat Kenny, it's a mystery how he's lasted so long. The man is totally charmless. I honestly cannot get the appeal. I was down with TB (Man flu) last week and listened to Joe Duffy a bit. They should give him the show! Would be tops with the auld wans.
TV3 is a pimple on the celtic tiger's arse. It is rubbish. Channel 6 has a brilliant music show, can't remember the name but presenter is very tuned in and pretty.

man, any programme RTE make about rural life that isn't a documentary or news broadcast should just be put down at concept stage. they are uniformly awful, excepting glenroe and bracken of course.
what about that show lately- someone somethings wonder women? i only saw the ads for it, and could tell that it would not only be brutal but also seemed a bit oo-er in terms of offense?
― Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)
man, any programme RTE make about rural life that isn't a documentary or news broadcast should just be put down at concept stage.
I often think people like me write it. You know, generally clueless snobs who wouldn't know a cow from a Burren hilltop.
Wonder Women was okay the one I saw last year. Wouldn't be able to watch more than one though. I don't know, the comedy seems a little unfunny on Irish tv. Perhaps there aren't enough of the good ones still resident in Ireland able to do these things weekly.
― hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

― Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)
and am quite happy to keep it that way, i might add
Paisean Faisean is a great programme on TG4 that actually reflects how Irish women buy clothes. By making the guys pick the outfits it has this weirdly anthropologic quality about it. It's also entirely obvious that everybody on it is there because it's a dare.
― Take You Down (I know, right?), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

it's like a final paean to the celtic tiger youth. high art.
― Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)
Ah. I think I've found their target audience: young dandys from the west.
IK,R spot on, you almost feel them going: "It's cool like, we both look like berks. I'm getting pints for this and you'll get some clothes so please be cool." It's not a bad show. The Bric a brac one is dire. "It's a bar stool and with some tinsel. OMG IT R FASHION ICON". Bollocks.
Number None, it is probably sponsored by USIT. To make sure lots of people do the J1 on the off-chance that someone may score them. I look forwards to a quiet summer when all the under-sexed young people of Ireland are off trying to score in the New World.

That essential dichotomy is a reason why I left :(
Maxwell's Fullmooners is a lot of fun in its place - a comedy gig that starts at midnight, when everyone involved is already ripped to the tits. I have no idea what purpose televising it would be.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
See darraghmac, I probably should have paid more attention on my days off!
There is no purpose. For some reason RTE think he is popular. I don't know of anyone who likes his stuff. His crapness is in fact the only reason that little man from Offally (?) gets invited back on the panel every week, compared to Maxwell he is funny.
