Precious Mackenzie was British (or at least competed for Britain) and was about 5' tall (I find it hard to imagine there were two champion weightlifters so named). He was close mates with Geoff Capes, shot-putter, later world's strongest man, who was the size you describe. They developed this routine, when away on international competitions, of going into bars together: Capes would say "Hey, if I can lift my mate above my head, will you give us free beer all night?" They claim that without fail the bar staff said with a smile "Hey, if he can lift you..."

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

From this month's When Saturday Comes:

Argelico Fucks
Chiqui Arce (fantastic, isn't it?)
Frigg Oslo (As said by many a Swede throughout history)
Francisco Arce (F.Arce! Geddit?)
Naughty Mokoena (fantastic again!)
John Thomas 'Dickie' Downs

There's also apparently been many players named Pekka who've played for Finland. Ditto Dongs for South Korea.

I like Jermaine McSporran. Not in that way, but it's a great name.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The name Mart Poom always makes me laugh. I am a small man.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree. It makes me smile. I was wondering why and think it is because it begins with 'poo' and by rhyming with 'boom' makes me think it has an onomatopoeic quality which in turn makes me think of farts.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Dave B, but Frigg [Oslo] is a club, not an athlete. And clubs can't have been allowed, 'cause otherwise i CANNOT SEE ANY REASON WHY no-one has mentioned Batman Petrol.

OleM, Thursday, 13 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gah. Bloody When Saturday Comes let me down again.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 13 February 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Leee (Leee), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't recall the exact spelling but local Melbourne boxer Lester Ellis's first world title defence in 1985 was against a Korean (I think) with a name something very much like Hwana Kil Yu.

There was an Essendon (AFL Oz Rules) footballer who came across from WA about 10 years ago, called Willie Dick. Alas, he turned out to be a flop.

10 years before that the same WA club had a full-forward called Archie Duda.

Blue Moon Odom, although, admittedly, the Blue Moon WAS a nickname.

For some reason, I always liked Bert (Burt) Rechichar (sp), a football player in the 50's. I liked him, I guess, because an old timer who used to get drunk in a bar I hung in would always say his name whenever anyone mentioned football. As I recal, Bert was a placekicker and once held the record for longest field goal before the 1-1/2 footed kicker, Tom Dempsey, kicked one from about 63 yards out (that's probably been broken by now too.....who's that drunken European who kicks them into oblivion?....

I agree with Chris V. that Coco Crisp and Milton Bradley should be on the list. What's amazing is that the Indians had both of them in the outfield at the same time during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. It would have been so great if they could have thrown somebody named Captain Crunch or Merrill Lynch out there to play alongside them.

merritt ranew (merritt), Sunday, 11 September 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Heh, I somehow remember that being the basis of a newspaper cartoon during USA 94 (during which he became the youngest player ever to be sent off in the World Cup finals, fact fans). I'm not sure how I remember this given that I had only just turned 11 at the time, but there you go.

I feel like there should be some kind of tag team category for Fulham having John Collins then signing Collins John when he left. Also, the number 4 Google result for John Collins is Collins John's Wikipedia page, which helpfully explains that Collins John is not to be confused with John Collins.
