Premature but I figure it was worthy of its own thread:

Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball League for 2003: ILX mode.

PLEASE READ IF INTERESTED:

I would like to commission this private league. The maximum # of managers is 20 per league so if need be, we may need to start another league based on interest. Last year, sign-ups began on February 21 and continued until April 30.

Unless otherwise preferred, there will most likely be a live draft (as opposed to a predetermined selections).

So far interest has been expressed by:
Yanc3y

count me in! will peruse options, make preferences known when time allows

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:50 (twenty-three years ago)

you can count me in and i will kick ass. But i suggest you trim the catergories way down. Thats way too much. In all the other leagues i'm in its basically half those catergories and can make it a lot simpler in regards to drafting and managing your team.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

sign me up! I too am for streamlining. But it has to be all-MLB.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Popshots to thread!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

it will definitely be streamlined down to the more traditional stats(although i am open to considering fielding percentage and errors).

to clarify, i will need your input on what stats to consider and the like. the purpose of posting all the eligible categories is to list the realm of possibilities and narrow it down from there.

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

This is going to be grebt.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm down with that shizznit.

I suffer from acute homer-itis in fantasy leagues. I'm liable to pick a third string Cardinals outfielder over an A-Rod.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Heres usually how the leagues I am in are set up.

Runs Batted In;

Pitching:
Earned Run Average (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I was gonna ask if folks wanted to join MY pre-formed Yahoo league of 12 teams - right now, there are a total of 5 current owners, 1 prospective owner (yo Ms. R), and 6 open slots / slackheads that hate responding to e-mails in a timely fashion. The teams are already formed, tho - it's a keeper league that's been running for a couple of years now - so any newbies would be given their pick of players from a pre-existing pool. If you're curious, check out zee rosters, which include the pool of players up for grabs (I'm Ginkgo Balboa - don't ask about the players I dropped / traded last year, lest you want to cry as I did; the current lot of up-for-grabs folks can be found under the UNOWNED TEAMS) & drop me a line.

I think Gygax simply posted ALL the options open to anyone starting a Yahoo! league - lord help ye if you choose to keep track of all those stats. (I was in a head-to-head league like that. 20+ categories - it was hell on melba toast, esp. w/ statistical overlap.) I'd love to participate in 2 (or 10) (or 20) leagues, but I need to eat & sleep & practice safe hygeine, so I'll have to limit myself to just one. Note that I leave myself the option to flake out & change my mind.

Oh, hell, I'm in, too. Please limit trades & roster moves so I don't Cam Bonifay myself.

Please also notice that my request for folks to jump in my league is NOT meant to step on gygax's toes in any way.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Popshots, but I would rather do 1 all-ILX league than 2 leagues.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Understandable, madam. Plus, you can get your boy(s)!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark! Barry Zito! Hooray, you can all take advantage of me by offering me the cutie pitchers.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity,

randy johnson for mark mulder (plus i'll show you where his condo is in the marina)?

i knew where sean estes lived on telegraph hill but he moved.

i swear to god i'm not a stalker but my female bball friends are.

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just trying to think of some good b-ball pitchers with character, & Randy was the only bloke I could think of.

Though he gave me indigestion, I hope Rich Garces makes a comeback. He's so snuggly.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to put the "fantasy" into fantasy baseball bigtime.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Let the games begin.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just trying to think of some good b-ball pitchers with character

John Smoltz and Curt Schiling have a lot of character. They're Christian. I like this in a baseball player. They probably don't cheat on their wives as much, if at all. Plus, they are hot. My idea of hot is all about WHIP.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Curt Schilling also plays Everquest. And he's funny. If he & Piazza (& Al Leiter, maybe?) decide to become color commentators after retirement, baseball broadcasting will be saved! (Especially if Piazza works the fancy beards & invites Alf into the booth every so often.)

So, can we, like, draft players now?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I like to think of Schilling and Johnson as Ernie and Bert.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

stay tuned, draft/sign up should be around ~Feb. 21.

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, gygax for organizing!

I guess we can start thinking about team names. I'll have to browse the HACKing MASS ones. Those are funny.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sticking w/ Gingko Balboa (which I wish I thought of last year - I ended the year as K-R@D 3133T H@X0R5 (or something) - 'twas a sad September).

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe it's the curse of the Balboa?

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

It might've been the curse of the Balboni. (Damn it, it's too late for me to try being funny.)

Hey, gygax - have you used Yahoo! before? They have this strange pre-draft ranking setup thing that's a bit of a bear to navigate & organize. (Essentially, you rank the players - pitchers & hitters - 1 to whatever via this wonky Java applet, & then an auto-draft is run once the league commish - gygax, in this case - gives the OK, wherein the players on your list are drafted in order of ranking, pending availability. Yahoo has their own pre-rankings, in case you don't want to bother with trying to rank players yourself.)

It'd probably be a logistical nightmare (given time differences & locales), but having a "live" draft (via IM, or even ILX) would theoretically kick ass, even if it'd make it a bitch to organize the teams ('cause then you'd have to manually make each team).

I'd also like to give Senor Pitchblende some kudos for taking on this monumental undertaking.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

A draft where we take turns manually is urgent and key. Couldn't we just do it on a thread? That way we could take a break and pick up again if someone had to go away for a while.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

What the smart lady said.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

This is going to be great. We're going to be right up there with Jay-Z and Nas and Snake and Snake 2.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

They're Christian

That describes about half of baseball players from what I've gleaned.

I like the idea of 10-12 categories myself. The list Chris posted is pretty standard...

Fielding % could be intriguing though. I've never played with that before.

Live drafting please! It shouldn't be too much of a logistical problem; I don't think any of the U.K. contingent are aboard (?)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah doing it on a thread is cool too as long as we can finish it in like a week :-)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, the caveat is that the draft java applet is very broadband and IE friendly... if you experience troubles (lag, booting, etc.) with yahoo! literati or similar type java applet driven games, the live draft may suck monkeys for ya.

the autodraft which David R. mentions preranks the players via The Sporting News ranking which of course you can override even as drafting commences.

yet i'd venture to say most participants will be usa folx, it shouldn't be too hard to agree on a 6pm-7pm PST / 9pm-10pm EST draft time... i can be flexible, maybe even doing a weekend thing (or during the workday if all of you could pull that off!).

if we want to do it alternatively (IM/ILX), i'm open for anything provided it would be fair, efficient and reasonable.

oh and i should warn everybody that i will be in japan for the last two weeks of april and first week in may and i will not be as computer-bound as i am regularly (don't think i won't still be 0wnz0rXing y'all in the rankings though).

thanks for all of your interest, i'm a big baseball fan (it really is THEE only sport i'm a fan of) and i think it will be fun.

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

of course, draft via ILE thread means more work for me!

awww, you guys are worth it...

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I kiss you! It's peanut-butter jelly time!

(You know, gygax, if you need help re: the league, I'd be more than happy to offer my services, especially since it's lookin' more & more like my wee little league is going frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt.) (And, no, I won't try to Selig your Vincent.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fielding and errors may take a backseat to my lobbying for OBPS measurement: onbase% + slugging% = the TRUE measure of one's ability to produce offensively.

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm letting you all know ahead of time that if I can draft Bonds, I'm filling out the rest of my roster with Giants.

Also, I'm a rookie at this, so whatever you guys decide will be ok with me (though where's OBP%? (Already working the Bonds angle, see)).

Ah gygax snuck it in at the last sec, thanks.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Gygax, if you make this league saber-friendly, I really will kiss you! (Note: don't let the threat of a kiss stop you from following your dream.) (Felicity might kiss you, too, though, so keep this in mind.)

I'm all for using OBP & SLG instead of BA & hits. If we could work RARP in as well, that'd be awesome, just so I could go around saying RARP. RARP!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

OBPS is urgent and key.

I KISS YOU

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

David R.
hold the kisses... no RARP available via yahoo! and i'm only as willing to go as SABR as yahoo! allows. WHIP is about as good as it gets at weeding out those particularly lucky pitchers who rely on their infield heavily.

but yeah, OBPS sounds like it's pretty critical (esp. in light of bnw's sluggo-centric style).

ideally i would like a potent hybrid of the traditional Chris V. stats and the more progressive SABR-leanings of David R/felicity/Leee.

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely there are other freeware baseball fantasy league computer programs?

Any in rec.sport.baseball.fantasy?

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Well "hits" can go. That's meaningless. I like OPS, but I also like having good ol' BA around.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm a yahoo! slut, i'd feel most comfortable commishing there.

if y'all want to set up a league elsewhere, i'm game, but not as a commish.

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i want Jim Thome. go phillies in 2003!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't want to continually sound like MY LEAGUE MY LEAGUE MY LEAGUE, but in MY LEAGUE (ahem...sorry), my roomy conspired last year to make the stat categories a bit more reflective of actual player performance & effectiveness while still using Yahoo!, & came up w/ the following configuration:

Batting ---> OBP, SLG, Stolen Bases, Runs, RBI
Pitching --> W, WHIP, Saves, ERA, Ks

Even though I finished 6th, it worked pretty well. Pitchers on crappy teams don't get penalized because their teammates suck. Also, if you took on a guy that got wins, but pitched like ass getting those wins, you were justly penalized. Also, I liked that lip service wasn't paid to paper sluggers like Shea Hillenbrand (who finished @ .280 with 20+ homers and a fair # of ribbies, but only walked 10-15 times all year), while also giving kudos to monster milk-&-cookie guys like Mike Sweeney (whose HR numbers are definitely respectable, but gets the bulk of his sluggo power from doubling 60ish times).

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

yahoo is fine! I was just thinking of Dave's RARP and your fielding and defense! It's so nice of you to offer to be commish. I've never done this before. I'm just excited.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm . . . milk and cookies

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, yeah, one more thing - RARP! RARP! RARP!

(Really, I just mentioned RARP because I like typing / saying it.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

(Oh my goodness. Sorry if that messed up anyone's formatting! I thought it would do the line breaks automatically.)

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:54 (twenty-three years ago)

What is that, RJ's swinging-strikeout total from last year?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, that's probably the # of times Neifi Perez struck out in August.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I just love them. mmmmm . . . strikeouts!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Note: as soon as I finish making CD-Rs, I'll hop onto IM & stop posting to this thread. Really.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I want in. I don't care if the scoring is realistic (RARP!) or not, part of the fun is adapting the strategy to the rules.

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think these should be the categories up for debate:

Batting:
Batting Average
Slugging Percentage (mainly would like to hear David R's reasons)
On-Base Percentage (for logging these separate rather than OBPS)
On-base + Slugging Percentage
Fielding Percentage (definitely open to debate, i could go either)
Errors (way, i just hate chumps that can't play both ways)
Runs Scored
Hits
Home Runs (for the power luvahs)
Runs Batted In
Stolen Bases

Pitching:
Earned Run Average
WHIP Ratio (as essential as OBPS is to batting)
Wins
Shutouts (? ... could be interesting)
Saves
Strikeouts
Balks (COME ON!!! BALKS!!!)
Holds (I learned to love this, shows mid-relief true grit)
Total Bases Allowed (??? ... interesting maybe?)

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

if you think i left something out, please let me know!!

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Holds. I love my sexy Tiger Beat Set-Up Man Monthly!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Caught stealing?

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh snap, I didn't even see that they offered OPS (OBP + SLG) as a stat! That's soooo cool!

Why I Like Slugging - well, just as OBP (which measures the %age of time a dood gets on base) covers & can replace hits & walks, SLG (which measures the %age of bases gained via hit per at-bat by said dood) covers thee glory stat (home runs) as well as doubles and triples (and those piddly little singles). (I'm just being pedantic with definitions for clarity's sake, BTW, not to condescend.)

While I'm all for glory stats & the pure joy of accumulating stuff, I'm a bit fat old stick-in-the-mud regarding the measurement of a player's true contribution to his team's ability to win. After visiting sites like Baseball Prospectus again & again & again, it seems like the best way to measure a player's effectiveness (in the batter's box, anyway) is by tracking the following:

- how many times the player reaches base
- how many bases the player gets / takes each time he reaches base
- how many runs the player produces

On-base percentage covers #1; slugging percentage & stolen bases cover #2; runs & RBIs cover #3 (even though there is a bit of overlap between runs & RBIs due to HRs getting counted twice, since the hitter scores AND drives himself in).

I wouldn't mind getting fielding stats in there, but my issue with that stuff is - 1) errors are pretty arbitrary, since they depend on how the Official Scorer is feeling, & also depend on reputation a lot (it's like NBA refs letting Patrick Ewing travel!), and 2) since fielding %age is based on the # of errors made, it makes THAT stat a bit wonky & unreliable, too.

Is that the sorta answer you were looking for, gygax?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooooh yeah caught stealing!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

And holds, too - saves are booshit.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I'll call my HACKing MASS team "Baserunning and chemistry win championships."

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't forget to scout! (The Cubbies have two front-runners @ 1B and 2B! Too bad they couldn't keep Hundley.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugh, don't remind me.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeeeee this is gonna be the best fantasy league evah!

I vote for the live Yahoo draft. It's good when you get down to the dregs and need to find a second baseman and it'll pick one for you.

I'm for Es and Fielding% being included... good-hitting but defensive liability players should be punished (not literally). And Holds work good for me. Everything else looks great.

I'll see YOU on the diamond!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

We need to do a H2H league, not a roto league. H2H leagues have a much more personal feel, which is why I think they are much better. I'm in a cash money CBS league that works very well, and the categories/point totals that we use (after three years of tinkering)are these:

1B - Singles 1
2B - Doubles 2
3B - Triples 3
BB - Walks (Batters) .5
CS - Caught Stealing -2
E - Errors -1
HP - Hit by Pitch .5
HR - Home Runs 4
KO - Strikeouts (Batter) -.5
R - Runs 1
RBI - Runs Batted In 1
SB - Stolen Bases 2

Scoring for Pitching Categories
BS - Blown Saves -2
ER - Earned Runs -1
INN - Innings 1
K - Strikeouts (Pitcher) 1
L - Losses -5
S - Saves 7
SO - Shutouts 10
W - Wins 10

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not as fond of H2H as Roto. i think the Roto is more social and is much easier for major ratings shiftings.

again, I'd be game but not as commish.

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

h2h tends to make for some pretty whack results sometimes if you don't have your points worked out just right.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you mean Aaron?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i want in!

maura (maura), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Like in my yahoo basketball league the commish miscalulated and basically the only stats that matter are points and rebounds. But I glossed over the bit where you said you tinkered with those over three years so I guess that just makes my post irrelevant!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I would be down for a roto league. It sounds like other people want one. I've only done roto leagues a few times and I've never enjoyed it as much. But that's just me. I can have fun kicking your asses no matter what system we use (SNAP!).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he's talking about having a balance between pitching & hitting stats, & also the danger of overlap between stats in the same category - for instance, getting shafted when Troy Percival blows a save AND gets a loss, or lucking out when Schilling gets another complete game shutout & doubling your pleasure (as your league has it, Yanc3y).

The idea that a hitter gets penalized for K-ing, but not for popping up or GIDP or anything like that really irks me. Plus, all this focus on negative stats, man - what happens when a guy blows a save because Rey Ordonez can't field a routine grounder, or Posada allows another passed ball?

Things that the player is in direct control of (stuff they do on base, or on the mound when they hold the ball) I'm all for tabulating - things that are TEAM-based I hope to avoid, if only because what affects the Angles (in real life) shouldn't fuck up w/ Troy Percival's performance (in Yahoo! life). In a perfect world, I wouldn't even bother with wins & saves & holds - I'd just focus on how the pitcher performed in terms of ERA & WHIP & yadda yadda yadda. (I'm all for sucking the FUN out of FUNTASY.)

A head-to-head league would be awesome, but I'm cool w/ roto. (I dare say h2h fosters MORE social interaction, if only in the form of spiteful rivalries, which are key in any baseball league.)

Yanc3y's got the right idea (re: talking smack)!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

The reason why a K is penalized, we finally decided, is that there's no way a K can help the team. It doesn't advance a runner, which a popup or a groundout can do.

As far as balance between pitching and hitting, here are the Top Ten batters in our league last year with their point output:

1. A-Rod, 643.5
2. Bonds, 635
3. Guerrero, 621.0
4. Ordonez, 594.5
5. Soriano, 584.0
6. Giambi, 579.0
7. Pujols, 567.0
8. Berkman, 565.5
9. Beltran, 557.0
10. Giles, 552.0

And here are the Top Ten pitchers:

1. Johnson, 782.0
2. Schilling, 687.3
3. Gagne, 569.3
4. Martinez, 568.3
5. Zito, 546.3
6. Koch, 538.7
7. Smoltz, 533.3
8. Oswalt, 508.0
9. Colon, 496.3
10. Halladay, 494.3

So yeah, a little skewed to the hitting side, but not bad overall.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 13 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Depending on the how the draft works (I have no computer at home) I'm in. Otherwise someone else can move in.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 13 February 2003 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay a few things:

I think we're up to 12 managers so far (hi Kris and maura).

wrt: overlap of stats:
i think OBPS plus BA is kinda fun or is it just too much? like i said earlier, traditional stats are what baseball is all about, even though SABR is more fair and accurate.

i personally think that if a pitcher blows the save and loses the game, he deserves double damage. closers have it too easy.

errors/fielding %:
i'm beginning to rethink these two stats per David R's rationale (which I think is great). Why bring the scorekeeper into the game? I'm still open to debate on this.

David R. writes:
In a perfect world, I wouldn't even bother with wins & saves & holds - I'd just focus on how the pitcher performed in terms of ERA & WHIP & yadda yadda yadda. (I'm all for sucking the FUN out of FUNTASY.)

Excellent, I'm glad there are people like you. But I'm also glad there are people like Chris V. In MY perfect world, it would be (70-75% Individual, 25-30% Team/External/Circumstancial).

Re: Smack talk
As commissioner, you will not here smack from my mouth until the season starts.

blown saves, caught stealing, etc.?
any more ideas? should we cast votes?

Yanc3y writes:

Very compelling, more debate on this is great. I'm on the fence.

Depending on the how the draft works (I have no computer at home) I'm in. Otherwise someone else can move in.

Please weigh in on your draft ideas. I think ultimately a live draft would be great with those unable to log-in preselecting their choices or just having Yahoo!/The Sporting News automatically set you up. This is still open to debate, I think my main reservation with the ILX thread draft is that one or two (or more) absentees could wreak havoc on the process. Your thoughts?

gygax!, Thursday, 13 February 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The Yahoo Java drafts are pretty effortless and easy. Plus there's an ongoing chat room on the screen, which makes things a bit saucey!

Blown saves should be negative points. What about those occurances when a pitcher blows a save and gets a win? He shouldn't get full credit for that, which is why penalizing closers for blown saves is a good thing.

CS should be the same as a strikeout, I think. You're losing a baserunner one way or another.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 13 February 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Two things.

I wouldn't even bother with wins & saves & holds
1. I think saves are ok, but not holds.

Plus there's an ongoing chat room on the screen, which makes things a bit saucey!
2. Sauciness is completely essential.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 14 February 2003 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Back up to the top of New Answers! And hstencil to thread!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 February 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, I'm here, but haven't read the whole thing. Can I still sign up gygax!? Please, please, please?

hstencil, Friday, 14 February 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I like having errors/fielding% for what it's worth... I agree that it does bring a bit of subjectivity into it, but really, 95% of the time an error is an error (and you could make the case that strikes and balls are subjective too). And I like holds... good middle relievers are totally underrated, IMO.

But then, I'm a stat whore like the rest.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 14 February 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Stats for clubhouse presences and heart, please.

Seriously, I don't care what we use because it will be fun. A live draft may be someone problematic for me but I can just rank my picks and let the thingy do it.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 February 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I like holds, I've used them in one league before. It makes things a lot more challenging, and anyway it's more reflective of the modern game. Great middle relievers can totally help your ERA and WHIP too.

I agree with gygax, traditional stats are what baseball is about. Yes, I understand the arguments of the sabremetricians. But if they ruled nobody would get excited about the home run race. They'd get excited about the OPS race. (I would LIKE to have OPS, just not at the expence of BA or HR).

I've never played head-to-head before, but I guess I'd be willing to try it. I think roto is better though. I like lots of day-to-day moving up and down the standings. I would think that engenders just as much competition and trash talking as head-to-head. Maybe more. Plus it's not as arbitrary (i.e. you could have a great team but face all the crappy teams during their "hot" week).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

This sounds like fun - I'd probably be ass at it, though, but could I reserve a spot for myself and if some more deserving person gets shut out, I'll yield to that person? I'm very emotional about baseball, though, and would lose interest if I couldn't have at least one Sox guy on my team.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 14 February 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Luckily I have NO desire to have any Tigers.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 14 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-b-but Carlos Pena!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 February 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

No way. Pena sucks! Hiram Bocachica (lifetime .228 BA) might get a strong look though.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 14 February 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Everytime that Pena has moved up a level in baseball, he has sucked his first year but excelled his second.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 February 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't worry, I'm sure as a Tiger he'll break that streak soon enough.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 14 February 2003 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The A's giving up on him so early certainly backs your pessimism.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if they really "gave up" on him, per se - they ganked him from the Rangers for relatively little, and they swapped him for some pitching help, and given the relative replacability of 1Bers, flipping an unproven would-be slugger for some hurlers w/ major league experience (well, one, anyway) is a fair swapski. (And he's only 24!) Hitting in Comerica isn't going to help his HR numbers, though. Not that Comerica is going to be anything except a hindrance for the Tiggers. That's one scary roster.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 February 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Hiram Bocachica

I can't believe I forgot to add his name to the "greatest athlete names" thread.

You know, they brought in the fences at Comerica for this season.

lose interest if I couldn't have at least one Sox guy on my team

Yay Kerry! Another Sox fan! We can gang up on Felicity.

They're gonna be really good this year.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 February 2003 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Dealing Foulke was a boner of a move.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 February 2003 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

No way. Believe me, I watched just about every game last year. He is a two-pitch pitcher, and his change-up had nothing. I'm well aware of Koch's problems, but give me the fireballer over the deception artist. I think it's really a trade that benefits both teams; Foulke's confidence was shot here after the benching anyway.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 February 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Chicago FAP during interleague play, anyone?

(Although I might suggest we do it during the North Sider's home portion of the series *cough cough*)

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 February 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm down! I always try to make it to at least one of the Wrigley games during interleague. I hated the concept of interleague at first, but after living with it in Chicago all these years ... I mean, it's the high point of the season! Our own little world series (since it's the only one any of us will see *sob*).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 15 February 2003 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Chicago interleague FAP sounds like fun!

Kerry (dymaxia), Saturday, 15 February 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey David, if you're having problems getting people to commit to the other league (which I believe is the one I'm in, right?) you could suggest rolling over to this league ... at least I'd be for it.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Saturday, 15 February 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Keith, we might have a full complement in our wee li'l keeper league! Hope springs like a Slinky!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 16 February 2003 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

So . . . when is the draft?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 16 February 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Chicago interleague FAP sounds like fun!

That could work. There are day games at Wrigley Saturday and Sunday June 21 and 22, so whoever's interested can go, followed by a proper Chicago ILxFAP afterwards.

Tickets go on sale for those games Friday, February 21. I may go to both but does anyone have a preference between days for the FAP?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 16 February 2003 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Felicity, what do you think of the Giants' pitching heartthrob?

Leee (Leee), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I haven't seen Ainsworth's "stuff" but looking at his 2002 K/9 (5.26) and K/BB (1.25) I probably wouldn't kick him out of my "rotation," if you know what I mean.

Now a guy like this:

Season   K/9 K/BB
2002 11.34 3.87

K-ROWR! He can bring me his "high hard stuff" any time, hehe.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 February 2003 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

But more importantly, can he go nine innings?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 17 February 2003 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Season GS CG
2002 19 1

You're right, stamina is an issue with these youngsters, but as long as I get a quality start I'm usually satisfied.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 February 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm bumping this up to the top.

Felicity - I have no preference. I saw the ad for the tickets today - is it easy to get them? Does someone have to camp out?

Believe it or not, I have never been to Wrigley. I was told by my parents that it is a sin.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 17 February 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha, it is. Thou shalt go to Wrigley Field. I have been to old Comiskey but not new.

You can order Cubs tickets online through ticketmaster.com or cubs.com starting Friday. Ordinarily I would just buy my tix at the box office or from scalpers on Addison but I think the interleague series on a weekend afternoon will be tougher to get.

Is it snowing madly in Chicago like it is here?

Gygax!, etc. -- When is our draft? I've never done this before so I have no idea how long it will take.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 February 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no preference for any of the days. Maybe the first one. (the first of the two series is at Wrigley, yeah?)

I've gotten tickets for Cubs/Sox at Wrigley from scalpers outside the park. You'll pay but it's not complete insanity. I think maybe $40?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

sigh, I love Chicago. Ok, why don't we try for Saturday June 21 and then we can give a heads up for a Chicago FAP afterwards.

But that's all AGES away. What we need is a date for the DRAFT.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

make it a sunday if possible

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Until Yahoo! actually opens up shop, we can't do dookie. Hopefully, it'll be before March 1st. I've a feeling it coincides with the beginning of Spring Training games.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

When does Yahoo open up?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

We should draft around March 20 or so. Doesn't the season start a week later?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote for March 16 or March 23

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Either is fine with me, as long as it can have an automatic default option.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Cubbies have my favorite player after Bonds, that being the MIGHTY BILL MUELLER.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 17 February 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Bill Mueller? I thought he was back with Giants again? Anyway, I know the Cubs got rid of him.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 17 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, the MIGHTY BILL MUELLER is on the BoSox, along with the EQUALLY MIGHTY KEVIN MILLAR. I am, how you say, psyched.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 February 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't do March 16... That's when my $$$ league's draft is...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's like the hockey draft, the date is set automatically, as is a default draft order which you can change around to your liking... say if you wanted to do it in order of cutest boys outta the bullpen.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yanc3y don't forget about our NL East wager at the FAP tomorrow!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Roll Call (please let me know if I've left anyone off):

01) gygax!
02) Yanc3y
03) felicity
04) bnw?
05) Leee
06) Aaron W
07) Mr Diamond
08) James Blount
09) Chris V.
10) David R. (vice commissioner)
11) Kris
12) maura
13) hstencil
14) Kerry
15) zaxxon 25 (?)

It looks like 14 or 15 based on zaxxon's involvement which means room for 5-6 more managers.

Stats

This may look familiar but eventually we're gonna need to hone these down via poll/vote and I need your input and rationale whether these stats are fair/fun or not.

Batting Average
On-base + Slugging Percentage
Fielding Percentage (?)
Errors (?)
Runs Scored
Hits
Home Runs
Runs Batted In
Stolen Bases
Caught Stealing

Pitching:
Earned Run Average
WHIP Ratio
Wins
Shutouts (?)
Saves
Strikeouts
Balks (?)
Holds (?)
Total Bases Allowed (nobody addressed this!?!?)

draft dates/league dates
as addressed above (should we start an ILBeisbol?... prefix ilx fantasy threads?)...

Last year, sign-ups began on February 21 and continued until April 30. April 1st is opening day.

Yahoo! Live draft day = Sunday, March 23rd?

gygax!, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah! I'm excited!

Live draft on March 23 is fine for me. I believe if you can't make it you can still rank all your players and the Komputer chooses for you.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, but you have to count me out. Seeing as I've committed to 4 other leagues before this one and have no time for all of them. Thanks anyways.

Whoops!

One more topic:

Settings
Players per team/Roster size

    5 catchers/infielders (C,1B,2B,SS,3B)
    3 Outfielders
    7 Pitchers
    5 Bench players (any position)
    1 Disabled List
= 21 players maximum roster size

Players from all of MLB (ie, both NL/AL)
Maximum Games per position (non-pitcher) = 162
Maximum Innings pitched per team = 1250 (open to debate here?)
Trade Deadlines (None or same as MLB?)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

DO we really need "hits" as an offensive category?

"Balks"? How many balks does a pitcher get in a season? 3 or 4?

I like having a trade deadline.

I can do any date for a live draft as far ahead as I can see.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

DO we really need "hits" as an offensive category?

So basically we should have a vote. Aye/Nay. Should I just go to a "Create A Poll" site and send the link to y'all?

"Balks"? How many balks does a pitcher get in a season? 3 or 4?

far less i'd imagine. but hey, yahoo! does the tallying. i just love Balks though, so much they call me "cousin larry".

"Filled up"? What, they don't have enough firepower over there at Yahoo to have a bunch of drafts going simultaneously? Sheesh...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

well it is FREE... My bet is that if you pony up the $7.95 you get carte-blanche wrt: draft times.

What kinds of names are yous giving your teams?

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm the Zambonies, which has always been my fantasty team name, since I was 17. Last year I almost switched to My Bobby Valentine, but didn't want to jinx my team.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 21 February 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pocket roxx u r all Bob Costas etc.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 21 February 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool lawrence! I'm glad we have some sensible Midwesterners in our League.

I am ChicksDigKs. I hope I can edit to ChiXoRsDigKs

felicity (felicity), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Instead of cleats my team will be wearing sensible shoes.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be changing my name as the season progresses, with the hope that my name reflects kindly on my place in the league and the effort my team puts forth. As of right now, my team is called Free Jose Canseco. This is a shitty name, and will be changed posthaste.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

2 things:

1. I love Free Jose Canseco

2. I don't think you change your name (if you can, please let me know!)

what do you guys think? should we make him post here before he joins?

decisions...

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

What is his position on Jose Canseco?

bnw (bnw), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my God I'm so signing up for this.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm out of touch with the comings and goings of modern baseball- I can't find Mark Belangers name anywhere on the draft list.

gygaxor- you're the commish, I'm with you on whatever you decide on the Singh telegram.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 24 February 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

my team will be the trophy wives

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 February 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

mark p
you better hurry up there are only two spots left and they are going fast

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

To be perfectly blunt, my decision to do a fantasy baseball league may be one of the most deliberately and self-consciously ill-advised decisions I have ever made. The only reason I am doing a fantasy baseball league, in spite of all that a lifetime of compulsive behavior teaches, is that the time I will sepnd doing ILB is time I know I would otherwise pass engaging in banter on ILE. I would have much less interest in doing a fantasy league for its own sake and may well lost interest and quit if it becomes focused soley on results. I recognize even now that ILB will be a huge time-suck that I cannot afford and, still choose to throw away this chance for a productive summer but only because I wuve you guys.

I have no problem with whatever you decide but personally I see more upside to keeping the league private than in opening it up to strangers, particularly strangers seeking a really deep and competitive league.

"Trophy Wives" is a fantastic team name. I still kind of wish my team were "Stats are for Losers."

felicity (felicity), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

okay were at 20 teams. if anyone wants to bow out please shoot me an email. thanks.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Great. WHo did we wind up with? Last I looked, I think it was:

01) gygax!
02) Yanc3y
03) felicity
04) bnw?
05) Leee
06) Aaron W
07) Mr Diamond
08) James Blount
09) Chris V.
10) David R. (vice commissioner)
11) Kris
12) maura
13) hstencil
14) Kerry
15) zaxxon 25
16) lawrence kansas
17) mark p

Who are the other 3 spots? Aaron W? Tad? What did the commish decide about the stranger?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

(sorry for my ungrateful rant -- I appreciate that it is an even bigger time commitment for the commish than for the players. I'm just excited and curious who we're playing with.)

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i just tried to join and got a 'league is full' error

:(

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:40 (twenty-three years ago)

mark p,

you should be okay, try again now. we're back down to 15.

felicity,

there's no real time commitment. get a good looking team together and tweak with them once a week and you'll do great. if you really don't want to play, i won't twist your arm (but you'll be missing out!!!)

gygax!, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Tweak once a week? Wait, did we decide if we're doing head-to-head or roto? Anyway, folks are definitely going to want to change starting pitchers every couple days.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

true... but you can set up your line up 5 days in advance in yahoo!.

IT'S JUST THAT EASY FOLX.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Should we start an I Love Baseball Board dedicated to our results, standings, trash talk?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

nah, a thread should do it

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

you could always use the board on the yahoo! site.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I like James' idea and hope our ILX Yahoo Fantasy baseball thread will grow to rival and eventually to surpass the Jay-Z/Nas throwdown threads in number of posts, creativity of trash-talk and inscrutability to outsiders.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

You all will cower under the massive amazing charisma of my team's patron saint, Carrie B.

As for me being competitive, that's an entirely different matter.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

gygaxs post on the sex w/coworker thread has me worried that he'll use his power as commish to extract sexual favors from the owners. Is there a morals clause in his contract?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

As co-commissioner (in title only) (and on the business cards I'm making), I'll do my best to block that cock. You have my word.

Any jokes about escape clauses? Bueller? Mueller?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

lawrence, KS: please report to the commisioner's office. oh and bring some astroglide, a bullwhip and some fresh gardenias.

i knew that (once sober) i'd regret that post to that thread. there were a couple things i left out which would've been funnier but i'm kinda glad they didn't make it. god bless.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

We have a lot of catching up to do with Jay-Z v. Nas! We are losing ground.

I hope everyone's scouting is going well. Here is my inside information* from Spring Training:

Mo Vaughn stole a couple bases and had great pitch selection.
The Orioles are full of power hitting!
Pujols is in danger of not making the 40-man roster.
I sat behind Pudge's agent and he is being shopped to the Yankees.

*some or all of this may be a lie

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity,

who is looking "hot"? who is "not"?

your boy prior got a mid-90s fastball sent into orbit by an old fogey who still had stitches in his elbow? wtf?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Note - the statement re: Ivan Rodriguez can be changed to the following and still be applicable:

I sat behind *****'s agent and he is being shopped to the Yankees.

Thoughts of a spry Mo Vaughn make me happy (though I'll miss calling him a fat turd).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Bonds is arguably the greatest offensive player of all time. Prior is in good company.

Hot: Castillo, Juan Pierre, Pudge, Graem Lloyd
Not: Jay Bell, Matt Duff, Ivanov Coffey
HOTT: Spooneybarger, Tony Clark, Kline

More this writer say not.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:37 (twenty-three years ago)

J.D. Drew has a very unfortunate goatee going. It warranted a drop of 20 places in my pre-draft order. He is now #521,643, one ahead of Mo Vaughn's gut.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

it's not reaching Bagwell level unfortunateness is it?

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The Castillo Felicity refers to is Frank, of course.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

When/how will our draft order be set?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I set the preference so that it will be randomly generated.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw that it will be determined 30 minutes before the draft. That fucking sucks! Is it a snake draft?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

yes. switchbacks.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

That's good. With 20 teams, it's gonna be hard to have a solid team. Who's gonna be the ILE pre-Lou Devil Rays?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

"solid teams" traditionally don't win fantasy. it's all the element of surprise, rookies, streaky hitters, etc.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

It might be the Stevenson Pockets, I'm emphasizing speed and defense over pitching and hitting.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

top 5 for sure. felicity's method of selecting pitchers may be a good start as well.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

what's her secret!? I MUST KNOW!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm also considering drafting all switch-hitters and also players who bat right and left handed. *ba-dum*

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity rates her pitchers on a scale of one to hot.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

all is lost then

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, but f's got a major crush on tanyon sturtz!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

http://espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/5341.jpg

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the high end of her rating scale is actually HOTT!

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

holy mackeral, Tanyon lost to the Indians twice within six days last year.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

dilemma:

1) do i do zero pre-draft scouting and assess my performance based on how well i do considering my subterranean research levels* or 2) do i spend endless hours 'scouting' each team only to finish hella frustrated when my club lands squarely in the middle of the year end standings?

* under this option, i may end up attempting to draft kent tekulve

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Tanyon is from Worcester, he got mad laid in high school.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

tanyon better not lose 18 games again this year, else my beloved birdies are SUNK

all hail cory lidle

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i say: draft your favorite players and have fun being a manager!

scouting:
look for any underlooked and underrated players who can perform but don't necessarily get the fan/media credit that they do.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

on the other hand you could try to subvert the system and "day-trade" players and stay up all night scheming ways to win by trading freshly injured players and wreaking havoc on the waivers list.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

the secret this year is *whispers quietly* juan uribe.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

avoid getting too heavily into baseball previews. read a couple, just to refresh yrself with some of the younger guys you might not know about, but other than that, it's a fucking crapshoot and most of the baseball writers are full of shit with their previews (except peter gammons, who's miss cleo with slack jowls and a cheap suit).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't stand folks that pick-up/drop players constantly and continually offer crack-headed trade proposals. I practically never trade. I don't think the day-trader types end up doing all that well.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

mr. diamond knows well of what i speak.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

With a name like Mr Diamond he better know what he's talking about.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't believe anything "Mis-Information" Manager Yanc3y tells you:

f's got a major crush on tanyon sturtz!!!

Career 5.07 E.R.A? Career K/9 0.59?

I don't think so, Skip!

Anyway, if my team needed a pitcher that looked like Forrest Gump, I'd draft Greg Maddux.

Now, this is a name I would like to see in my bullpen:

http://www.spooneybarger.com/puzzle/tim20-t.jpg

2.25 2001 ERA, 2.63 2002 ERA.

Yeah, I know he looks like he's from a boy band but he has "stuff."

I am tempted to stack my batting order with good-hitting pitchers . . . Mike Hampton, Livan Hernandez, Robert Person . . . (haha, Person) . . . but my fielding stats would suffer.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there a place where scoring is explained?

Does it go like this?

I draft, say, two centerfielders and rotate them in and out of the lineup due to some personal quirk of my own making- Yahoo then tabulates their season stats when they were in my starting lineup?

How does pitching work? the same?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity: pitchers batting stats don't count.

but anyway don't forget that felix rodriguez almost SET the MLB record for consecutive hits! hopefully he'll look more 2001 than 2002.

lawrence KS: outfielders are outfielders, regardless of position. Yahoo does all the tabulation.

pitching: you get 2 Starting slots, 3 Pitching slots (?), and 2 closing slots. any pitcher can pitch in any spot (IIRC). you can bench pitchers and activate them 4-5 days out. yahoo gives you an idea of who your probably starters will be so you can set this up easily.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey mark p, yeah, I like that Corey Lidle.

Thanks gygax! Is that because we are playing NL rules or something? You see, I have no idea what I am doing.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

duh I mean AL, whatever. I will draft all September callups anyway.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

regardless of AL/NL/MLB preferences, yahoo doesn't have any batting categories for pitchers (i know it's dumb).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Too bad Felicity can't pick up the Good Shawn Estes without picking up Bad Shawn.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

did i ever tell all y'all my theory on shawn?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Tell! He's a Cub now. I need to know which one with show up and if he/they take up 1 or 2 spots on the 40 man roster.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

he can't travel. if his rotation spot comes up after a long flight, bench him. dusty will send him out a day early sometimes.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

corey lidle was one of the best pitchers in the AL for the second half of the season

there was a six game stretch where he was like retardedly good

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

A-Rod just climbed a few spots in my draft order:

Texas Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez told ESPN that the club's spring training facility in Surprise, Ariz., has its pitfalls.

"In the outfield," he said, "you have all the hottest chicks come to spring training and they all sit there with bathing suits. It's hard to concentrate."

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

He climbed from No. 1 to No. 1 times infinity?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

My strategy: draft Darren Baker and OUTCUTE ALL YOU SUCKERS.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

In the Cubbie uniform Darren Baker will be unbearably cute! Especially when the Cubs go on a big losing streak and he cries, haha. Crying kids at baseball games are so cute.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

If they're crying about the game, that is. Not if they got hit by a flying bat shard or anything like that.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

the knock on darren is that he's got no discipline

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear he's actually a few years older than listed.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

haha maybe he could show sturze where the plate is

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"In the outfield," he said, "you have all the hottest chicks come to spring training and they all sit there with bathing suits. It's hard to concentrate."

"Daisy, you are soooo busted!"

Carl Everett = No. 1 pick! Check out this freaky story:

http://www.dallasobserver.com/issues/2003-03-06/gonzalaz.html/1/index.html

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i think i hate sports writers almost as much as i hate rock critics.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

That is so 100% the reporter's fault.

I mean it, those are idiotic, lazy, uninformed questions. And Everett probably subconsciously confused the reporter with Juan Gonzalez and flipped out a little, like any normal, jealous teammate would.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Those are idiotic and lazy questions (not sure about uninformed), but the truth remains that Everett is an asshole.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

That's old news. The reporter should have boxed Everett. That would have been a story.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Everett would have pulled a muscle before the first punch and then sulked for the rest of the bout!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

That article was really annoying. The fact is some players are like that and part of being an experienced and successful writer is sensing when and when not to engage them. It's like it was this writer's first story and he went crying home to mama. Crap like that happens with players a lot, and you deal with it and be professional and move on. Not write a sissy article like that.

N.B. I do think Everett is a grade A jerk.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 6 March 2003 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe he could show sturze where the plate is

Hilarious.

So David Cone pitched for the Mets yesterday and is trying to beat out Jason Middlebrook and a few others for the 5th starter position.

Boomer Wells' book is coming out soon!.

Flash Gordon to the WSox! Nevin out for the season! Thank goodness for our late draft.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 8 March 2003 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

When I saw the pic gygax linked I was actually going to post something about falling from grace, how the once-stately Baker took on a cartoonish air as soon as he donned the Cubbie blue, but I thought I'd lay off the Cub-bashing for once.

Ooops, I guess I didn't after all.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 9 March 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity, Flash is old news! Nevin is new news! But that's ok 'cause there's a better 3rd baseman in Joe Crede! Cubs beat the Sox today! Damn!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 9 March 2003 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Note: Phil Nevin is not on the White Sox, which is what your Joe Crede infers. But, supposably, that Sean Burroughs guy is A-OK.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 9 March 2003 06:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean Burroughs blows. And of course I was aware of what team Nevin plays for, I used to follow him when he played for the Tigers for fuck's sake. I just meant - half-jokingly - that Nevin's absence doesn't necessarily increase the scarcity value of 3b position. Cuz we think we got a good one here in Chicago.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 9 March 2003 09:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Figured as much. I was in Annoying Pedant mode when I posted - my bad.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 9 March 2003 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Nevin's absence doesn't necessarily increase the scarcity value of 3b position. Cuz we think we got a good one here in Chicago

Because you have the Spectacular BILL MUELLER.

Wait, he's in Boston.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 9 March 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

oh Billy Mueller is fantastic. Hooray for Utility Men. I like Mark Bellhorn.

The LIAR Al Martin has been at Spring Training. Everyone on your guard.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 9 March 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Note to super stud Theo Epstein: cut bait on Shea Hillenbrand ASAP. The Red Sox Nation will take the hit in HRs for a guy that can field the ball cleanly & work a count more than 20 times a year. If he's Jeff Bagwell, then I'm Brien Taylor. (PS - keep on bugging the Mets for that pitching prospect; they'll give.)

Al Martin! He swings like Meathook Dmitri Young!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 9 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Twenty major events that have occurred since the Chicago Cubs last laid claim to a World Series championship:

1. Radio was invented; Cubs fans got to hear their team lose

2. TV was invented; Cubs fans got to see their team lose.

3. Baseball added 14 teams; Cubs fans get to see and hear their team lose to more clubs.

4. George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays.

5. Haley's comet passed Earth twice.

6. Harry Caray was born....and died. Incredible, but true.

7. The NBA, NHL and NFL were formed, and Chicago teams won championships in each league.

8. Man landed on the moon, as have several home runs given up by Cubs pitchers.

9. Sixteen US presidents were elected.

10. There were 11 amendments added to the Constitution.

11. Prohibition was created and repealed.

12. The Titanic was built, set sail, sank, was discovered and became the subject of major motion pictures,
the latest giving Cubs fans hope that something that finishes on the bottom can come out on top.

13. Wrigley Field was built and becomes the oldest park in the National League.

14. Flag poles were erected on the Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the team's future World Series pennants. Those flag
poles have since rusted and been taken down.

15. A combination of 40 Summer and Winter Olympics have been held.

16. Thirteen baseball players have won the Triple Crown; several thanked Cubs pitchers.

17. Bell-bottoms came in style, went out of style and came back in.

18. The Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and the Florida Marlins have all won the World Series.

19. The Cubs played 14,153 regular-season games; they lost the majority of them.

20. Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Oklahoma and New Mexico were added to the Union.

did anybody here about this? apparently it was quite funny:

ONE-HOPPERS: Rickey Henderson was a surprise visitor at [Oakland] Fan Fest. He crashed the Legends' Panel to the delight of hundreds of fans. By that time, though, A's general manager Billy Beane had already left the building. It's doubtful the A's have a spot for the 44-year-old Hall of Fame-bound outfielder. ... The A's drew a record 29,000 fans to the festival.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2915686901&category=1469

This auction is for a guarantee that the Chicago Cubs will be in the 2003 World Series. The Cubs have not participated in a World Series since 1945. The seller GUARANTEES that the Chicago Cubs of the National League will be a participant in the 2003 World Series as representative of the National League. The guarantee shall be written in the form of a binding contract and signed by both the seller and buyer after the auction has concluded.
Should the Chicago Cubs NOT be a participant in the 2003 World Series as guaranteed by the seller then the seller will 1) compensate the winning bidder by hosting a party for the winning bidder and 50 friends at “The Cubby Bear” restaurant adjacent from Wrigley Field during the 2003 World Series. (Not to exceed $3000) 2) The seller will also provide a Chicago Cubs season ticket package for the 2004 season OR a season ticket package for the winning bidder's MLB team of choice for the 2004 season. (not to exceed $2500) 3) A donation equivalent to the winning bid will be given to the “Cubs Care” charitable foundation in the name of the seller and winning bidder by October, 31 2003.

If the Cubs are a participant in the 2003 World Series the seller will have a huge Party at a local watering hole and the winning bidder will be invited to partake in all the festivities.

NOTE BEFORE BIDDING! This guarantee is based on the very intriguing and compelling history of my 1969 Chicago Cubs bobbin head doll who heretofore shall be referred to as “Bobby”.

Bobby was given to me as a gift during the 1969 season and I proudly displayed him on my dresser, sometime unbeknownst to me during late August of that year he disappeared and was discovered later on that fall buried in my backyard (my sister did it). This disappearance seemed to coincide with the Cubs losing a 9 game lead to the New York Mets over August and September of that year. Our Family moved into a new house that winter and Bobby was lost until the Summer of 1984 in which I found him in some old boxes in the basement and hauled him off to college with me. Well as you know the Cubs were baseball’s best team in 1984 and won the Division and were on their way to the World Series when disaster struck, while playing nerf basketball, and attempting and 360 degree dunk against my roommate, Bobby was knocked down and his head came off, well that was the morning of game 5 against the San Diego Padres, you know the rest. So distraught after the heart wrenching loss to the Padres that Fall I decided to just throw Bobby in the trunk of my car (I just couldn’t bear to look at him). I seemed to forget he was there and had gotten on with my life when lightning struck again in 1989. I had just bought a new car (it was actually used but new to me) and while cleaning out the trunk of my old one I rediscovered Bobby, I thought maybe if I Velcroed him to the dashboard that spring it would bring the Cubs some luck, well indeed it did as they won the Division and were to meet the San Francisco Giants in the playoffs, alas this was the year! Well as you could have predicted my car along with Bobby was stolen 2 days before the playoffs started and the Cubs were beaten 4 games to 1 by the Giants. Bobby was missing and presumed dead by me when he mysteriously showed up in 1998 at a friends house (who had worked at a junk yard and retrieved Bobby from my trashed stolen car), I proved he had belonged to me and he was returned to his rightful home. Once again the Cubs made the playoffs and things were looking positive until my 7 year old stepson’s friend decided to pilfer Bobby from my fireplace mantle, by the time I realized what had happened and where he was it was too late the damage had been done… by the Braves. I had been through enough pain and decided it was time to pack Bobby away for safekeeping until my sons would be old enough to appreciate him and all he stood for. This December as we were unpacking Christmas ornaments my 5 year old son asked me what that Cubs doll in the box was , I explained to him that it was Bobby the bobbin head doll and that he had always brought the Cubs luck, but due to circumstances beyond his control he had never been able to see them through to a World Series appearance. My son looked up at me and said “ dad lets bring Bobby out this year and get the Cubs to the World Series”, Reluctantly I gave in. Bobby is now glass encased, superglued and screwed to my living room mantle. I believe this is the year he will work his magic all the way to the World Series. This is why I have guaranteed a World Series appearance by the Cubs this year.

I have provided a picture along with this auction which is a fairly close representation of the actual doll, but it is not actually Bobby, due to fears I have for his security. I will send actual pictures of him to serious bidders via email upon request.

Please bid sincerely and thanks for looking.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Sweet! Looks like it's above the reserve and a good deal (season tickets for $910?) but I would be concerned about the guarantee. Unfortunately, I am skecptical of word is bond over the internet.

Bobby is now glass encased, superglued and screwed to my living room mantle.

Hey, like a real major leaguer!

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus, I've got a draft tonight and I've done like ZERO preparation.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm toast.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, hey I better give you all my inside baseball draft tips, like, right away. :)

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, there's this hot young lefty named "Randy Johnson" who may not be on people's radar yet, you may want to try to grab him.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

My big draft is tomorrow. I have no idea what to expect. I'm sitting at the 8th pick, and if my scouting is correct, I could be looking at taking a Larry Walker-type guy then (it's a keeper league, so we're effectively starting in the 5th round). Lord help me.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Yanc3y, I think Darren Dreifort and Andy Ashby are poised to have comeback years. Jesse Orosco is another young up-and-comer with his best years ahead of him.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Darren Dreifort is finally ready to fulfill his promise! He's primed!

Oh, and MARK QUINN TO THREAD!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Sadly, felicity I'm picking 11th out of 12. Yikes! I'll probably take Pujols in a shockah.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

But who on the wraparound? Dare I take Pedro?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

There's no way Pedro will be around then! Pujols would be a great pick at 11. If Soriano is around, grab him. Try to get an infielder and a pitcher with your first two picks.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, you're right, I'm on crack. I thought doubts maybe would cause him to drop a bit. See, I've done no prep!!

But by the same token, Soriano? I've got no chance at him.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Most likely you have no shot at Soriano, but you never know. People want to nab Bonds/Sosa/Vlad/Randy/Pedro/Curt/A-Rod early, so he could slip. It'd be a steal, that's for sure.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I need someone's brain for a minute. Would it be worth grabbing Ray Durham or Jose Vidro rather than, say, Gary Sheffield or Larry Walker? Thinking position scarcity mainly here.

Felicity? Raposa? Get your asses in here!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd take Vidro personally.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

That's how I'm leaning too. Durham's making me pause though. He's going to score a lot of runs with the Giants.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh that strength up the middle. Vidro is 28, Durham is 31 and Yanc3y is in a keeper league. Pluys Vidro brings the leather.

Hmm . . . what would Ivan DeJesus do?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Bill Mueller shall be the true steal. He's my #1.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I've said too much!

Leee (Leee), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

haha I think I'll take Mueller, too, so I can trade him to Leee when he gets stuck with A-Rod and Pujols by the Yahoo! default thingy.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's back onboard the Griffey bandwagon?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I have also set my pre-draft for Carrie Brownstein.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, what team does she play for?

hstencil, Friday, 14 March 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm drafting Jr. in my league where we have stats for DL time and getting caught in rundowns.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

You can't do a live draft either, felicity? You guys are actually at a distinct advantage. Everytime I've gone against computerized picks, the pre-drafted team runs away with the league. Harumph. I'm not doing it either!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

And suicide attempts?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the league is cool, you get a bonus if the player injures himself while being run down. Also commercials, we have a stat for that.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Just once I wanna see Sammy Sosa get hit by the foul ball.

hstencil, Friday, 14 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Carrie B is one of the switch hitters I was going to draft.

My sleeper is Danny Baez (closer- Indians).

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

haha I think I'll take Mueller, too, so I can trade him to Leee when he gets stuck with A-Rod and Pujols by the Yahoo! default thingy.

Felicity I was going to do that with Zito and Huddy.

All's fair in love and baseball.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

All you really have to do is mention or post pictures of Zito. Or Mark Prior's million-dollar a$$. After that I really can't think straight.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, I'm partial to Mulder's smoldering countenance more than Zito's surfer dood cuteness. But that's me.

I think 2B is actually the scarcest position. (Actually, my roommate said so, and I agree, so I'm taking his idea - don't tell him.) There's Soriano (and his 3 walks), Vidro, Kent, then Castillo (DEFINITELY worth looking @, for SB & AVG), Durham (yeah, he's OK), Aaron Boone (who'll be playing there this year - if he copies last year, he'll be a fine pick), the other Boone (who's pretty ehhh in my book, HR & RBI potential notwithstanding) (I'm still skeptical of Soriano, just so you know how brain damaged I am), maybe Todd Walker, Mr. Alomar (who can't be as bad as he was last year) (I hope), and then a few folks w/ potential, and then fetid chum. I fear Junior Spivey's pan-flash potential. Mark Ellis & Brandon Phillips & Bobby Hill & even D'Angelo Jiminez (hello, dark horse!) have Hubie-Brown-esque upside (in my world).

Here's where I get irked because my current fiancial situation is keepin' me from getting Baseball Prospectus Premium. I miss my Transaction Analyses. And here's where I consider setting up my ILX draft rankings this fine evening. And here's where I ignore the ringing phone. Stop ringing, please.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh - and if Bobby Cox can find it in his heart to field hitters in his everyday lineup, Marcus Giles would be a spunky li'l pepperpot of a slugger.

My world upside only qualifies for D'Angelo Jiminez, BTW - everyone and their incontinent uncle (including you scout-happy folks, I imagine) loves Brandon Phillips.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

David, I think you're OTM. The Brothers Boone love is misguided, however.

Yeah, I'm going with Vidro hopefully in the first round, unless Abreu, Thome, Gagne, Burrell, Halladay or Rolen fall to me. Which I doubt.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

And Mark Bellhorn! He should be playing third this year (unless they've someone better in the Cubs dugout, which I doubt), but he played a good amount of 2B last year, and he was faboo (= 20+ HRs in just over 400 ABs, if I recall).

I don't love the Boones much @ all - I only like like them. Bret will always be a .260 hitter in my heart (& every year except 2001), but Aaron's the better of the two just because he can steal. & if you ignore those awful percentiles, he was pretty OK. (That .314 OBP makes me convulse, tho.) (And he's 30?!?! Oh, crap, never mind.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gotta jet now, but wish me luck for tomorrow! Any fantasy leaguing ILXers at the FAP tomorrow night will hear my war stories, I'm sure! Raposa, you should come tomorrow, if you aren't planning on it already.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

good luck, Yancey! I'm still cramming here, have to leave in about an hour. AARrRRHH!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 15 March 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, good luck, guys. Don't try to do too much out there. Just take it one pick at a time.

I Mulder's smoldering countenance

Yes, Mulder looks like a movie star when he's in action (hello 2001 AL smoulder-off -- I mean Division Series) but he doesn't photograph that well head-on.

I am still futzed in the head from this. You know what it is, Dave? The 50's/60's/Sandy Koufax/Ebbetts Field/Sandlot Peanuts wind-up.

http://www.virgoinservice.com/gifs/baseball_08.jpg

And that's the truth, Ruth.

p.s. Sandy was hawtt. Still is. Oh and Christy Mathewson but Matty probably doesn't look so good these days.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 March 2003 07:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Sandy IS hawtt, in that distinguished Sean Connery sort of fashion. I think. I'm tired; don't listen to me.

Doesn't Maddux throw like that, too? Maddux isn't hawtt. You knew that, of course.

You know, you really can't go wrong w/ any of the A's top 3, unless Hudson continues to wear that silly soul patch. Not cool, Tim.

No, no, the Maddux wind up looks completely different. Although he is kind of cute, in his own way.

I don't know who this loser is but Wrigley looks cool. Admit it.

:)

I actually spent my evening taking the BP list of EQA ratings from last year & put them into an Excel spreadsheet in order to properly suss out how I should rank players. Then I gave up & winged it.

And like anyone needs to be convinced of Wrigley's coolness.

Hard to believe that someone w/ such a cool delivery as Tom Seaver can bore the sand out of glass as an analyst.

I should go to bed before I start typing like a drunk, lobotomized & senile Roger Angell about Pedro.

BAD DRAFT!! BAD, MR. DIAMOND, BAD!!!

I want to cry I fuX0red this thing up so much. I did get Pujols #11, which I wanted, and I got Zito #14 on the wraparound - Yay! - but it all went downhill from there. Too much lack-of-preparation in later rounds. I'm too drunk to worry now. It's ok; it was valuable experience for when I smoke you all next week! Hahaha!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 15 March 2003 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

DOH! That doesn't sound so bad. What if I do some trash talk, ILM troll-style?

Oh you think you're crying now? Wait until I take Al Levine and the Molina brothers and their fat stats in the first few rounds of the ILE draft! You're gonna dread the matchups every week with ChickDigKs, yeah you with your pathetic Jason Giambis and your Curt Schillings and your good-hitting midfielders. Then we'll see how much crying there is in ILE baseball. Yeah . . . by you . . . crybabies . . . HAHAHAHA . . . suckers!

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

So, my draft... Here's my team in the order I drafted them, keepers first. Raposa, you're going to be pissed about one of my picks (I am too).

OF Lance Berkman
OF Brian Giles
P Barry Zito
P Jarrod Washburn
OF/Minor Leagues Marlon Byrd
OF/Minor Leagues Joe Borchard
1 P Eric Gagne
2 2B Jose Vidro
3 3B Aaron Boone
4 OF Gary Sheffield
5 P Josh Beckett
6 C Paul Lo Duca
7 1B/OF Raul Ibanez
8 SS Jose Hernandez
9 P Corey Lidle
10 P Kaz Ishii
11 P Jose Contreras
12 OF Jay Payton
13 1B Lyle Overbay
14 P Kip Wells
15 P Andy Ashby
16 3B Jeff Cirillo
17 OF/Minor Leagues Rocco Baldielli
18 P/Minor Leagues Rafael Soriano

So the obvious gaff is that I drafted Aaron Boone. I'm still not sure why. A definite mistake. Other than that, I passed on Wood and Burnett in the first round to take Gagne, which was questionable. Otherwise I feel pretty good about my team. We start 1 C, 1 1B, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 SS, 1 Corner Infielder, 3 OF, 1 DH and 8 P. So I should be alright.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 16 March 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Boone's a bit of a duckfart, but he could potentially do well for you (IF he improves on what he did last year) (and that might depend on where he is in the lineup, how he handles 2B, how raw last night's sushi was, whether Dad grounds him for not washing his stirrups, etc). & Cirillo as a backup - double eesh.

That Ishii / Contreras double whammy also gives me The Fear, esp. given Ishii's awful awful awful 2nd half (topped by getting konked w/ a line drive! - that's a sign), but drafting Kip Wells & Rafael Soriano so late is super-awesome. (Soriano looks killer, too - have you seen him pitch? His mound demeanor is swoon-worthy - reminds me of old-school Kevin Appier, for whatever reason - & he brings the heat, too. If the Mariners don't put him in the rotation - which, to my knowledge, consists of old man Moyer, gimpy Garcia, Piniero, & 2 chumps - I'll eat my belt.)

What's the story w/ Lyle Overbay?

Tangent: the Mariners hired the ROYALS' hitting coach? Egads. Texas might get 3rd place after all.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 16 March 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Tangent #2: if Jamey Wright winds up as the M's 5th starter instead of Soriano, I'll eat my belt, poop it out, & eat it again WITHOUT SALT!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 16 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I had a dream about my Lyle Overbay conversation with Yanc3y from last night. Perhaps I am just disoriented from the close proximity of the words "swoon-worthy" and "Appier."

Yanc3y I'm sorry I was teasing you so hard about your team last night -- it looks good. Zitobuhuh. DaveR, did Yanc3y tell you he picked up the Sheff in the 8th round?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 16 March 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Lyle Overbay is the starting first baseman for the Diamondbacks. A rookie. He's been getting Tony Gwynn comparisons -- a solid contact hitter with no power. Don't have super high hopes for him, but I figured he's worth a shot.

As for Contreras/Ishii, there were no good pitchers left really -- the Brad Pennys, Armas Jrs and the like. Guys who will get 10 wins and have a 4-plus ERA. So I took a shot on Ishii and Contreras because [wait for it] they have lotsa upside value.

The dumbest part about Aaron Boone -- when I took him my boy Hinske, who I drafted in the last round last year, was still available, but I wanted to pick him up in 4 picks on the wraparound. So somehow I convinced myself to nab Boone, and two picks later Hinske was gone.

Oh, I didn't mention my last draft pick, which I'm proud of, actually. I grabbed Matt Mantei in the 19th round. I figure if nothing else he'll get me some points in the first couple months of the season.

Oh, and the first overall pick of our draft? Ken Griffey Jr.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 16 March 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

No problem with the joshing, felicity. We're cool!

Oh yeah, you're right about Shef. I actually drafted him after Jose Hernandez. I wrote it wrong up there. Which obviously makes it a much better pick. Also, Juan Pierre lasted until the 18th round. I wanted him, but I already have 30000 outfielders.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 16 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

He who drafts Griffey must have great love for hamstring pulls & mid-May kvetching. If the rest of your league followed suit, you'll be fine.

And, hey, back in the day, Appier had a dazzling curveball & this herky-jerky "lemme try and strrrrrretch like Tom Seaver" delivery w/ just a li'l bit of a hitch that was totally disorienting for about 2 years. Seeing him beat the Red Sox thirty times a year in Royal blue makes me sad when I see his dumpy acne-scarred buttock tossing 84 MPH meatballs for los Angels.

Sheff's awesomeness is totally dependent on Furcal getting on base (& staying there) & Andruw being able to focus on the next pitch instead of his next Gold Club field trip. (Andruw's only 25!) & whether he decides to be a cranky bastard or be a stand-up dood. (I'm totally acting like a Bizarro world Gammons right now - forgive me.) Drafting Sheffield that late is awesome, though. (& after Jose H.? Nice!)

Fick on 1st & Giles at 2nd, defense be damned, Mr. Cox - defense is why you're riding Vinny's fetid loopy-swining carcASS. (Ha.)

Do you remember when Joe Crede was drafted, Yanc3y? He might've been the ideal guy for your 3B situation (if you're a fan of the upside) (and I know you are) (or was he a keeper like your Mr. Byrd & Mr. Borchard?).

I'd bitch about Juan Pierre (again), but I know I'm gonna get stuck w/ every single chump I loathe in the ILX draft, & they're all going to get hurt on me to boot. & beat their wives. With crack pipes. While washing their trucks.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 16 March 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Joe Crede was a keeper, as was Hee Sop Choi, Jesse Foppert and most of the young studs...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 16 March 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

"..hamstring pulls & mid-May kvetching.."

Ah, mid-may, when pullers & kvetchers report

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to see Mr. Diamond's roster.

Yanc3y, was Spivey available in your draft? Passing on Juan Pierre is understandable in your sitch but I am now having sad flashbacks of you telling me you passed on Spooneybargey.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to see Diamond's roster too.

Spivey was available, but I'm guessing last year was a fluke. He went fairly late. Bonus for my squad: I just nabbed Eric Milton on the waiver wire. I've put him on the injured reserve until the all star break when he's supposed to return. Could be a nice second-half boost!

(nice running into you yesterday felicity, however briefly)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool, more late-season pitching.

Nice running into you also -- too bad we couldn't have chatted longer with your polite indie friends but the light was changing and I was heading into work.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

So I need some advice: One of the guys I most wanted going into the draft was Aubrey Huff (who I had last year), but I didn't nab him. I want to swap for him, and the guy who has him wants an OF in exchange. Should I offer Payton for Huff?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Toronto Blue Jays are the 2003 World Series Champions!!!

http://www.ea.com/easports/platforms/games/mvpbaseball2003/seasonsim.jsp?article_id=seasonsim

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

(I have been playing that on ps2 all week as my fantasy prep work.) (The game won't take Payton for Huff from either side.) Bloated Rockies stats are annoying, so yeah, trade!

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

The surprise team of the season turned out to be the Giants, who actually improved despite the loss of manager Dusty Baker and second baseman Jeff Kent.

big surprise...

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The only way the Giants won't be improved this year is if Marquis Grissom gets 500+ ABs.

Yanc3y, my scouts tell me that Huff is going to be a DH (dunno why), & I don't know if trading away the spectacbibular potential of Jay Payton playing 80 games in a Little League park surrounded by Grade A beef for Mr. Huff mired in a D-Ray lineup featuring Rey Rey & Travis Lee & Ben "Appropriate Last Name" Grieve. Please, Yanc3y, think of the children.

Then again, Payton makes Griffey's injury calvacade look like a Shriner procession (without any Fez love!), & Huff's a bonafide stud w/ 4 years on Payton, so who knows?

(btw sorry everyone for abandoning this thread; i've been on a bender lately; will post pathetic team from other league shortly)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 20 March 2003 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I just need a 1B/Corner Infielder in the worst way. Right now I'm gonna be starting Ibanez (probable bust), Aaron Boone (why God why???) and either Lyle Overbay (probably bust) or Jeff Cirillo (who was my deep, deep sleeper this year -- hey, he's got a .305 or so career BA!). Plus I wanna deep throat Aubrey in the worst way and I want him to return in kind. His goatee would make a great sac scratcher.

bnw -- how is mvp? I haven't decided what my baseball game will be this year... (i have a ps2)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Draft in 2 days! Ready the wa... um, the room in which drafting decisions shall be made! I have a draft consultant ringer! PHEAR ME!

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 22 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I only rented mvp, and wasn't that impressed. Depending on how you set the batting and fielding controls, its either too hard or too easy. Also Steve "Psycho" Lyons as color commentator = gag. Some of the managerial and GM moves are cool, but the actual game part is kinda boring.

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 22 March 2003 01:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yancey that makes me so happy.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 22 March 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

so I've ranked like the top 15 or twenty players for my team- I won't be able to make the draft tommorrow, do I have to do anything to make these picks automatic? Will the computer go through my list and pick the ones I've ranked (if still there) and then go on to the computer ranked players afterward?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Saturday, 22 March 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

As long as you hit "submit" after you've done your rankings you should be cool. Just keep in mind your top 15 picks will probably be gone in the first two rounds, so yeah, you'll get the computer picks from there on out. (The real risk here is you end up with a high ranked injured player.)

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 22 March 2003 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, gotcha. thanks bnw.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 23 March 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha, Yancey you roX0r. Drinking would just about the worst thing I could do right now, but I may have to break out a brew or two once the draft starts. I think I've got my head a little more together so I'm ready kick some ass. So, here was that other draft I had...

12 Team league. O categories: R, 2b, Hr, Rbi, Sb, Ba, Obp, Slg
D categories: W, L, Sv, K, Holds, Era, WHIP, k/walk

1. A.Pujols
2. B.Zito
3. L.Castillo
4. T.Hunter
5. C.Delgado (way too high)
6. R.Halladay
7. J.Kendall (good pick)
8. J.Damon
9. J.Washburn
10. T.Salmon (ugh, worst pick of draft; total pressure pick - I was getting yelled at to pick, etc.)
11. BY.Kim (another terrible pick; I thought he was still closing - see what lack of preparation can do)
12. A.Boone
13. C.Lee
14. M.Timlin
15. L.Hawkins
16. C.Hammond
17. B.Weber (holy run on holds guys sheesh)
18. O.Vizquel
19. B.Penny
20. F.Cordero
21. A.Sanchez
22. D.Moss
23. R.Fick
24. F.Catalanotto

So, the worst thing was the reaching for a loser like Salmon but even worse is the fact THAT I HAVE NO CLOSERS. NONE. I guess I'm adopting a tank saves strategy, willy-nilly.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

So my lineup right now is

C Kendall
1b Delgado
2b Castillo
3b Pujols
SS Vizquel
OF Hunter
OF Damon
OF Salmon
Util Boone

SP Zito, Halladay, Washburn, Penny, Moss, Kim
RP Hawkins, Timlin, Hammond, Weber, Cordero

Wish I had a bit more power. I never did get that one big basher. Wish I had a better SS, but hey maybe Omar took some more steroids this off-season. A guy can hope...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I'll sober up before the draft. Who knows. I just lost $20 playing poker, so I'm fucking grouchy. LOOK OUT ILXORS!!!

Teams worth watching (besides me, of course, har har): Mickey Mantle's Liver (w/ a new catcher) (but holy crap that outfield!), The Trophy Wives (w/ some bullpen help), The Lurkers, &, you know, the rest of the league.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll take Pujols, Leee... let me know who I've got that interests you.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

:-D

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

leee if yr serious about pujols then i'd be down too

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm dead serious. I need ptiching (though cos we have so many teams, who doesn't?) and I figger I have a good enough OF to trade him.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

take a look at my staff, leee.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

and yeah, that's both a come-on and an expressed interest in a deal

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Three way anyone?

Leee (Leee), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I call bottom!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay wait

let me think about this and figure out what my needs are first

my outfield looks decent

and i don't want to dent my starters

i need speed, a better infield and possibly some bullpen help

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Check yr trade page, Leee

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

me too...

vizcaino/o. perez for pujols

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I like that this is a headline in the News section of our league homepage:

"Yankees will fall short of championship again"

Man, Yahoo! knows its shit!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Note: Every player on my team is available for trade.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmm so much attention... I am ILX Fantasy Prom Queen for The Day.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I realized too late that Ron Cey does't play anymore and I need a third baseman. I have like three first basemen (Thome's off the table though). Anybody need a first baseman?

Also, I drafted a DH- there is no DH in this league is there?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I realized too late that Ron Cey doesn't play anymore and I now need a 3rd baseman. I have two first basemen up for trade (spezio and simmons).

I also drafted a DH- there is no DH in this league is there?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I have two almost identical posts for trade as well.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Looks like Thome's back on the table. He can join the threesome.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

DH rules suxxx!

Lawrence... You can put your DH in the Util spot (looks like the Yahoo Komputer Gods put Burks there). And, not that trading is a bad thing, but it looks like Spezio can play 3B.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I thunk he meant a more productive 3bman, like, say, Pujols. Check yer trade dealie, Lawrence.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh. That makes sense.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Thomes off the table!!!!

spezio's a first baseman isnt he? Question: You only get credit for the stats if he plays that position in the box score, correct? so if spezio only plays 10 games at third I only get those games?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

No, you get points wherever he plays.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

really? this changes everything

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's the smarty pants now??

Yeah, I forget what the "rule" that Yahoo uses but basically if a player played X number of games last season at a position then he's eligible to be used in that roster spot. Sometimes thru the season players become eligible to play new positions, hence the always exciting "LF, OF, 2B, DH."

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

dilemma #2: do i trade for a save man now or wait a few weeks into the season and pick up some newly-appointed closer on waivers?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you should trade now and leave the newly-appointed closers to me.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

mark, follow aaron's advice. aaron, follow your advice. thx.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

That's one reason why Pujols carries a bit more value; he's eligible at 1b, 3b, and the outfield. Hope you're taking that into consideration, Leee.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

oh wait i could use a third baseman...

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

So that pending trade -- is that 4 real???

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

The MLs decline to comment at this time.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 24 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

VETO

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I would VETO that, especially considering what the MLs were asking from me in exchange for Pujols. One of the guys you wanted is better than everyone gygax is offering put together!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Leee, let's work something out that might be a little bit more, mmm..., passable?

i'll send a counter your way.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I DECLARE SHENANIGANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I declare false metal!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

All I'm saying: Leee wanted Eric Chavez AND AJ Burnett from me in exchange for Pujols and Kevin Millar. The players gygax are giving up are all inferior to either Chavez or Burnett. Somethin' smells funny!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

EFF this let's go on strike

(i was kidding about the veto thing btw)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

(i'm just falling asleep at work and need to get riled 'bout something)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE!!!

pssst! Lugo for Bonds?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

DEATH TO FALSE METAL....

everybody, just veto it and we'll start from the top.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I was expecting a counteroffer from you Yancey.

It could also be possible that I'm the worst judge of talent evah.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

a-rod and halladay for aurillia

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

laugh it up you will see and i will laugh while you cry.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

My god, what have I done? How did I wind up with Darrin Erstad?

And I have no closer now that Kim is starting argh.

I am coveting Yanc3y's Hee Seop Choi but I guess I have a pretty good 1B as it is. I like my #1 but I have no horses in my rotation.

Haha bnw, Kevin Brown. :)

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Who are the Doo Doo-Ettes and why do they have three closers? I need one -- make me an offer.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

pedro astacio is available to all comers

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Brown's e.r.a. this spring = .86 suckaz! don't call it a comeback!

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we call it out mid-May with back problems?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

foolz! I have no time for your injury ph34rs and fancy statistics.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait -- That trade WENT THROUGH?!?!?!?!?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

This is like Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio. What happened to our veto option?

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I know! I vetoed it. Or sent a message to gygax, anyway...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn dude... you got ripped off. In general, trading a #1 pick for a #6 pick isn't a good idea. I didn't bother vetoing cuz I figure if you're dumb enough to make a bad trade I ain't gonna bail you out (I'm trying to talk like Casey Stengal).

Anyway, I'm still willing to start a picket line if you guys want.
STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE!!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

A trade involving the commish being put through before the veto deadline is a little suspect. Gygaxor has some splainin to do.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

No, gygax was on the up-and-up with this. He and I emailed about it. That trade should not go through though, that's for sure. The time allotted for us to veto it was ~12 hours! It should be more like 24 or 36. And clearly people were not happy about it...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I haven't logged into the site since Sunday. It's not like I'm going to go there once every couple days until the season starts. Sheesh.

Is there a way to send email notifications of pending trades or something? 'Cause I didn't get one of those either. Or would that create needless traffic?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

12 hours! We get like a week in my hockey league. Hopefully it can still be undone. Apologies to gygax! for suggesting he's corrupt as the Shy Town Black Sox.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

wait: are we actually saying that a trade SHOULD be vetoed simply because it's incongruent?

i think thats setting a dangerous precedent

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Unfair trades can make unfair leagues. If I decide tomorrow that I don't actually want to play, I could give my entire team over to Yancey for nothing thereby screwing over the rest of the league. (Well, aside from the fact I have only like 3 good players.)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

DUDE YR SPOSED TO KEEP THAT QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

okay but this trade was made at the beginning of the year

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Well if Pujols is hurt for 3/4's of the year or starts swinging the bat like Randy Johnson then it might turnout fair. (I would weep for my Cardinals though.) (I have posted more to this thread today then I have to all of ILx in like a month.)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I think this more of a dumb than an unfair trade... Like I sez above, if you make a dumb trade than that's yr problem (and kudos to however can pull it off). Now, a clearly UNFAIR trade -- like a team dumping players -- is another story and that's what'll get my's veto.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I could see who accepted it... I VETOED IT!

my original offer was declined (3 players for pujols) and this was Leee's counter.

In order to appease the managers: I will reassign the players to their original teams.

I'm thinking about outlawing trades... any ideas?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, just move the players back and we'll learn from the mistake and move on and never talk about it again. There's no do-overs in real baseball but FANTASY baseball on the other hand....

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

also, the trade window was 24 hours. i changed it so that it would be VETOED that much quicker.

any ideas on changing it from the default 2 days (48 hours)? # of players needed to accept trades?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A majority needed to accept trades should be fine, I think. Default of 24 hours should be fine. If something weird/bad is happening, it'll be posted here anyway, and I'm guessing we'll all notice if there's activity on this thread...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

okay i'm fucked.

Leee, as well as many of you, have denied the commissioner access to edit your line ups.

Soo...
how to proceed?

Leee, can you tweak your setting to allow commissioner access to edit your lineup?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

now pujols is on waivers...

i'm gonna lock all access to trades/adds until we get this sorted out.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

No worries... we just gotta figure out how to put the players back on their correct teams before the beginning of the season.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i will email lee.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, everything's fixed. we now return to scheduled programming.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

mr. diamond asks:
Is there a way to send email notifications of pending trades or something? 'Cause I didn't get one of those either. Or would that create needless traffic?

this is a setting that you decided when you registered for the league. go back into your settings and you should be able to check the box. let me know if you need more specifics.... it's late and i just ate popcorn and chocolate milk for example.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Howsabout starting a new thread when the season starts? This one is quite long (god, how many times have I heard that before?).

And lotsa waiver activity today.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

weird, it said i added pujols back to leee's team last night and now he's back on waivers.

PLEASE DON'T PICK UP PUJOLS.

I will wait until he's off waivers then add him (and Quantrill) back on to Leee's team.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Pujols... how I covet thee... tempting me there with your #14 O-rank.

I agree with Lawrence about starting a new thread when the season starts.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i've made a waiver transaction, and i've noticed that a few others have as well

i don't have a problem with this movement - does anyone else?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I think gygax was saying don't pick up any of the players who were involved in that botched trade until he gets it straightened out. Any other, actual free agent is fair game though.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

no i know but someone posted on the yahoo msgboard implying that waiver moves might not be fair play...?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh... yeah, the players who are off limits are just the ones in the trade, right?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

trades/free agents are okay... pujols/quantrill/millar are not. please be patient.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

:-D trevor hoffman anyone?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

who's got rocco baldelli?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

CoCo Crisp got sent down to the minors yesterday... bummer!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

He was playing well too!

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

With an outfield consisting of Matt Lawton, Milton Bradley and Karim Garcia not even Barry Bonds could crack that starting lineup.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

gygax seems that Perez and Bell are on my team now. I'm going to cut them so you can pick them back up.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

never mind I see what's going on.

I still need pitching.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Today's offer: Pujols for an iPod.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Mac or PC?

(oh lord my boredom has reached new depths here at work)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i need bullpen help (namely holds and saves).

i'm willing to trade outfielders (wilkerson, grieve, kielty) or starting pitching (radke, k. rogers, tomko, astacio, r. jensen) to get it.

anybody a match?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

You're gonna draw out all the heavy bidders with Ben Grieve and Brad Wilkerson on the table! (trash talk has to start sometime, right???)

Opinions on Aubrey Huff and Raul Ibanez, anyone?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

hey i'm not looking for smoltz here. just a little help.

anyway what's wrong with wilkerson?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Wilkerson's a decent hitter. I had him on my team last year -- brief flashes of getting hot, followed by game after game of 0-fers. He's got an unbelievably low OBS for a lead-off man. He's a Mark Quinn-type -- he's generated more fantasy baseball pundit ink than he has runs.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm hoping that there's still more upside to his game. last year was his first proper season and i think he turned out decent numbers, considering.

that said i still need bullpen help...

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Take a flier on him. Tremendous upside!" -- Every Baseball Weekly since 2000.

Not criticizing you here, Mark. I've just gotten fed up with baseball "journos," aside from Jayson Stark, who's a dream.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

and yancey was the only one who didn't laugh (out loud) at my #1 pick....

well, not that i heard anyway.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

wait, i think i heard something...

hehehehehe...

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

O Perez has been put on waivers, is he off limits too?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm, it says o. pezez was put on waivers but then he's listed on the roster of the ML's.

Its time to re-hire Billy Martin and put my world right.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Bud Selig, where are you when we finally need you??

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I think ol'Bud has been embedded into the Mueller Lites.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

there is some weird shit going on here... let me try my magic again.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

to clarify: odalis perez and david bell should be on my team.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Reminder: Opening game is on Sunday night, so I'm guessing our rosters have to be set by Sunday at noon? Is that right, g?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 28 March 2003 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah! 48 hours to baseball!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 28 March 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm considering calling in sick on Monday to fully bask in my lameness.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 28 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

It's weird, my "Edit Lineup" page doesn't appear to have been updated, even though my add/drop page is current. This lag may be what's keeping Perez and Bell off your team, gygax.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 28 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Leee: Just go to "My Team," make your changes via the dialog boxes and then hit the "Submit Changes" box. That's it. You should be set. Don't mess around with "Edit Lineup."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 28 March 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

(make sure you're viewing your team's lineup on the current day, too, leee. have a poke around that menu to see what i mean.)

lawrence are you serious about spivey for guardado?

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 29 March 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

lee what yancey said.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 29 March 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

FYI ILXers... You can change yr lineup up until the game starts.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 29 March 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean once the season starts you can't change your lineup?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Saturday, 29 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

mark p: actually the trade would be Guardado for Gonzalez. I know nothing about fantasy baseball but here's my thinking on the trade- I have two great relievers in Smoltz and Guardado (it's my only team strength) and am currently starting an outfielder who hit .235 last year.

I'd move Baez into the other reliever spot (I'm gambling that he's going to turn out to be very good as the Indians no.1 reliever- he's a good pitcher).

I'd like some opinions from people on this trade (if mark p actually accepts it). Even if mark doesn't go for it, what are some of the pros and cons?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Saturday, 29 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

you can change your lineup as often as you want...

EXCEPT when your players are playing a game (real-time)...

and once you've committed a player to a position (and their game starts), you can't play another player in that position.

stats are updated midnight PST.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 29 March 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Given my #1 reliever being Mike Dejean, Guardado looks quite sexy to me.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 29 March 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The everyday can be sexy.

Holy crap, Durazo didn't get the starting job at 1B? And when can Kim qualify as a starter? The Diamondbacks on my team have forsaken me.

Let's get ready to rumble. I am excited for the "reality" baseball league to start, too!

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 30 March 2003 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I dreamt fantasy baseball last night.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 30 March 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

(What Gygax said about changing lineups... sorry my post wasn't very clear. I SUXXORS.)

ESPN has a countdown to opening day banner!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 30 March 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The season starts tomorrow and I have no first baseman, no closer, and no offense.

Hmph! Stats are for losers. :P

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 30 March 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

All the ace relievers are on a concentrated number of teams -- it's like playing with a league-ful of Steinbrennahs!

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 30 March 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I don't know if this has been answered yet, but are there statistical differences between just plain P and SP/RP?

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 30 March 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

well, not really, it's to prevent teams from starting more than 5 starters (SP/P) or 5 relievers (RP/P)... that's all.

allow me to elaborate on something i said earlier:

you can change your lineup as often as you want...
EXCEPT when your players are playing a game (real-time)...

and once you've committed a player to a position (and their game starts), you can't play another player in that position until the next day

We have soundly trounced Snake and Snake 2 so let's close the books on Spring Training and pick this up here:
