Canadians, C/D?

So, today's Canadian papers are all abuzz with how disappointed the USA is with Canada for not going along to war with them.
"We would be there for you," is the basic line.
I'm curious as to what American ILXers think of Canada with regards to our unwillingness to go to war without UN backing.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Horace, I think you're asking the converted here, for the most part.

This might explain vice versa however..(thanks Noodles).

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Go Canada! Classic all the way!

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

dud. they all smell like bacon.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Canada, and this only bolsters my admiration!

There is even the possibility of a Toronto move, though it is somewhat remote.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm curious as to what American ILXers think of Canada ...

i don't. ever.

otto, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

DING DING DING!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Vancouver and "some of my best friends are Canadian" and I'd also like to visit Montreal, but I now enjoy 'Freedom Bacon'.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Canada is G*R*A*T*E. But then I am not an American.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw those said same headlines today on most of the major papers, and I definitely feel a rant coming on because of it, but since this isn't really the thread for it, I'll spare you all.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

One irritating thing that's been going on here especially in the media is this crap about Canadians wavering on support for the war, when the evidence for that is pretty flimsy. The vast majority of Canadians do not support it, and we're smart enough to know that a large percentage of the American population doesn't either. And wtf was going on with Don Cherry the other night? What a bastard! As far as classic or dud goes, speaking for myself - dud. Most other Canadians are classic, though.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

No matter how much Bryan taunts me, he's classic, as are all of the other Canadian ILXors, even the ones I haven't met yet.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm have an american dad and a canadian mom and i've spent about half my life on each side of the border. I was Born In The USA, but I pay my taxes and reside in the True North Strong and Free.

I get frustrated with both for different reasons. Right now, Canada seems like a nicer place to live. But whenever I'm in NYC or SF I think I'm a sucker for living up here.

I think Bryan is right, Canadians are mostly against the war.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of which, hi Fritz!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Comeone, how many of you had Canadian GFs eh?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Honestly, I'm actually quite fond of "America Jr.", and have enjoyed my time across that border (the majority of which was spent fishing and camping, admittedly).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

when I went to Canada, I was very disappointed to discover that the cops do not dress as Mounties. Nor do they hang around in airports singing songs welcoming you to Canada.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Sean-bitch. That Onion article made me piss myself when I first read it. There were at least three people that I went to high school with who told bullshit stories like that!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Mounties only wear the Serge for ceremonial occasions.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Canada's great, but Ralph Klein sux.

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I've never been to Canada and I don't think I've ever been friends with any real-life Canadians but there is a whole weird mystique to Canada, for me, which those of you who read the Canadian Prairies thread will be all too familiar with. Also my band spent the weekend recording an upcoming EP called "Saskatchewan" so clearly I'm a little interested in the concept of Canada.

But so probably that article means that "the Bush administration" is upset with Canada, not the USA. The USA doesn't really think with one mind, believe it or not.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

America Jr., nick? Play nice!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, you have to hear the Rheostatics' song "Saskatchewan".

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"America Jr." = one of my all-time fav. HomerSimpsonisms.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

This just in off the wires, Canada just committed $100 Million to humanitarian aid in Iraq.

Chris, I live in Sask and am a music writer at a daily newspaper here. Would be interested in talking to you once yr EP comes out.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The Montreal Expos, and their misadventures in ownership, are enough to make Canada Classic forever and ever amen.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

You're forgiven, nick.

I just traversed the Canadian prairies from Winnipeg to Swift Current and back this past weekend. I feel so deeply sad that I can't describe it. It made sense that I got a call saying my grandpa had passed away during the drive. There's nothing like that trip.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I've made a lot of trips across the plains for funerals in the last five years. It's a hell of a place to feel small in the universe.
My sympathies, Bryan.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

:: checks allmusic, is unsurprised to see that the Rheostatics entry is written by Sean ::

Is there an easy way for me to lay my hands on a copy, hmmmm? "Most Canadian band ever" seems like an intersting idea.

Thanks. Swift Current is a great and crazy town (I was born there and visit when I can).

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, best version is on Rheos' Double Live album.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I have heard of cars with American license plates getting vandalized in Vancouver the past two weeks, because of anti-war sentiment. I normally hate putting political slogans on my car, but I might have to affix my "No War In Iraq" poster to my back car window my next trip to Vancouver or Victoria just to prevent damage from stupidity like this.

I love Vancouver, but I hate the shallow Rage Against The Machine style leftist reactionaries that are all too common, there.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

(Then again, cars get vandalized and broken into in Vancouver, because it's Vancouver)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Swift Current? My mom is from Regina and she refers to Swift Current (where many of her relatives live) as "Speedy Creek."

Nate: Have you seen Mr. San's new book "Neufonia Must Fall"? The publishing company I used to work for just released it...www.ecwpress.com

It's almost as good as the King Jammy's book I worked on...almost...

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

When the draft is reinstated, it's Canada all the way for me! I can't wait!

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd start lookin' now.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

In college I had a long-distance fling with a Canadian.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I call it that too, sometimes. My dad (who is nuts) calls it Speedy Creek, Saskatchebush. We'll be glad to have you, Nick.

have ever tried to be stealthy in bright red and a big dumb hat?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

From what I've heard, they're extremely hot and uncomfortable (being wool melton), and very expensive as well. They're kinda goofy looking, too.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

If anyone goes to Regina, I'm sure Horace would love to take you to the RCMP academy and museum.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes.
They have one of the five completely different pieces of rope that they're sure hanged Louis Riel.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

And souvenir t-shirts and hats!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Canada is really nice, but I always get weirded out when visiting: "Where are all the problems?" Does it get boring?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

We have none.

Yes.

s woods, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

We have lots of problems here. We have tons of crime in my city. We maybe just don't dwell on it as much.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, if you don't consider a $2CAN-per-blank-CDR media tax a problem...

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

(oh yeah, and that crime stuff too)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

We like to kill each other with shovels here.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The last present I got off anyone, it was someone from Canada.

No, wait, last but one. (They were both books.)

Americans never send me *anything*...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah...check out the west side of Vancouver...

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes getting a cab can take up to ten minutes in Toronto. Also, Mr Sub stinks.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Alternatively Driftwood/Jane & Finch in Toronto or Gottigen Street in Halifax. I supposedly live just inside a nondesirable area but its still pretty decent minus the crazy drivers.

Sometimes getting a cab can take up to ten minutes in Toronto.
10 Minutes! Kim & Sundar To Thread!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah...check out the west side of Vancouver...

Goddamn Stanley Park, UBC, West Van, Vancouver Intl. Airport, stupid Tsawassen ferry terminal... grrrrr

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Always heard it was lower east side was no go, didnt Kate have a story about that?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

E. Hastings St. in the lower east downtown area, near Gastown, is extremely depressing.

The southern eastern burbs, like Burnaby, Surrey, Langley, etc., are depressing, but in a more safe, sanitary way.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The east side is the "bad" part, but it's those damned richos on the west side that really are the problem...It's been over 65 years since someone from the east side has been on city council and over 25 years since someone from the east side has even been able to run...Why? The 'couv isn't split up in electoral districts/wards/etc. like every other large municipality in Canuckistan. It's whoever gets the most votes wins a seat on the council. The kicker? There's no campaign finance restrictions so those west siders always kick ass.

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

As an American who speaks French, I love Montreal. It's the only place in the world I can go where French people prefer to meet an American over an English-speaking Canadian.

Nemo (JND), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I'm not sure how I feel about Canada's laws regarding foreign musicians performing in their vast land.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

When my parents went to Montreal recently they taped an episode of the Simpsons for me that was dubbed into French. Absolutely the coolest thing ever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

There are two types of Simpsons episodes in french--there's the cheese eating surrender monkey kind, and then there's the poutine eating surrender monkey variety. You wouldn't want to upset the Gallic folk with Joual...

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

n-licious, do you have the Simpsons DVDs? On season 1, there's a "Simpsons in foreign languages" feature that has the same clip dubbed in Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish (of course), French, and maybe some other language.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I'm not sure how I feel about Canada's laws regarding foreign musicians performing in their vast land.

Doesn't every country have work/performance laws like this? Ur.. maybe not?

I think it's funny that, in Canada, it's a flat fee of around $300CAN per performer, whether you're the Rolling Stones or the Minor Thirds.

Now, the Canadian content laws -- where 60% of all radio content must have Canadian origin -- is a really good idea. Sure, that means you could be huge in Canada and "ok, you are....?" everywhere else i.e. (which I personally call the Anne Murray phenomenon.. no idea why, no good reason, maybe because she's so immaculate and nunlike and funny that way)

There's another layer for French Canadian content in Quebec, I think.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

(it's also worth noting that, at one time, the U.S. had similar laws regarding music radio, but it had to be 60% British)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Canada. My favorite thing about it, though, is how much time and energy Canada spends distancing itself from the United States.

"Hello Canada... how do you do today..."
[interupts] "I'm not the United States."
"I didn't say you were. I was just curious how you were..."
[interupts] "But really, I'm not the United States. We're nowhere near the same."
[pause] "Okay... so, um..."
"I mean, we might be in the same continent but do people ever confuse France with Bulgaria? I think not!"

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh wait, I'm sorry. That dialog should've gone into "Canada, C/D?" not "Canadians, CD?"

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

db, I have a similar theory, though I call it the Tragically Hip phenomenon.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried to get a review copy of Nufonia but no dice so far. (pout, etc)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Also it seems that the pic up there that used to be Chris Benoit is now a red X. No matter. ANYTHING plus Kid Koala = Classic.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I'm not sure how I feel about Canada's laws regarding foreign musicians performing in their vast land.

The states one is only marginally better, but I do admit its better. Takes forever to get though.

Don't make me dig out Canadian Content laws Donut, But for campus/community radio its 35% of pop (rock, techno as long as its popular) most be at least 50% Canadian. There are all sorts of other rules for Classical, instrumental and jazz.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, but so what's the skinny from a practical sense? If I were to try to do a Canadian Prairies tour, how feasible would it be? (I mean, ignoring the fact that no one has ever heard of us or would necessarily care.)

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

How many people are you? How well known are you?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

1st and foremost, well you don't have to tell the truth, DO NOT lie to the border guards. I think Eye or Now or Exclaim did a story on this recently.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

We are two people with minimal gear (acoustic guitar and keybaord, no amps).

Don't lie to the border guards? Why not?

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm proud of Canada for doing what they feel is right as opposed to being bullied into supporting the U.S. in yet another idiotic military action. Three cheers to all of you above the border who put Chretien (spelling?) into office.

My live-in, who recently optained his Americna citizenship, is now seriously contemplating returning to Canada, as he is feeling more and more isolated in the U.S. and more disgusted with the current leadership of the country. I hope he stays, but I do understand his frustration and anger.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Go somewhere between lying and telling the truth

"the guitar and keyboard? we're just going to have a hootenanny, that's all"

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, we would be having a hootenanny, OK? You' ve been to one of our shows, you know what they're like.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Well just don't tell them about the guitar and keyboard unless they ask. The Microphones (Phil) and Mirah managed to get over the border together at least once this way. But they did a kamakazee tour of almost all of Canada in the middle of November which is not a heavy touring month. Thats if your not going to shell out for the permit.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Note that if you get caught going across the border to do shows and you LIE about it on the way over, you might get barred from going into the country ever again.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Quebec and its damm Freedom Laws.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 27 March 2003 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Every other country in the world should have CanCon programming laws that apply only to stuff by Canadians living abroad. Canadians not living abroad should all be sent to Camp X-Ray

Softwood Lumber, Potatoes, Oil & Mineral Rights, Kyoto?

Where were you, O Brother Sam?

ps I know the difference between gov't and people. I love americans, and don't want any of you to get hurt. But I think you guys are really screwed.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The funny thing about the softwood lumber issue is that it has come back to bite the US on the ass - it just pushed up prices and made homes a lot more expensive to manufacture. When they start stealing our water is when I join a militia (only half joking).

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't forget Ohio, Upstate New York, Maine and the Alaska panhandle, but that was more the Uk's fault for screwing us over.

Chris, you should talk to the folks at Scratch Records and Zulu records in Vancouver. They are record stores.. not venues. But they point you in the right direction.

Actually, you should really talk to Andrew at Blackball Records in Nanaimo... I think he stocks Tape Mountain stuff, even.
Nanaimo is on Vancouver Island, so you'd have to arrange to pay to ferry over from Vancouver or elsewhere, but you should really contact him anyway. I met him once, and he's soooper nice. Google for "Blackball records" of course.

Tell him you know Butch too.

Canadians are just pissed that George Bush didn't think them significant enough to be included in his 'Axis of Evil'.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Canadians are just pissed that George Bush didn't think them significant enough to be included in his 'Axis of Evil'.

Oh, give him time. There is still that plucky pot issue that could potentially piss off the Feds.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

and don't forget how we whupped USA's ass in hockey at the Olympics last year. Hayley Wickenheiser is our WMD: Woman of Mass Deftness (weak, I know. I'm sorry Millar)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 04:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Canada = Classic, especially Montreal. Toronto is apparently not the place to be, though, unless you are quarantined with a surgical mask.

Besides, Sloan is Canadian. What more could one ask for?

webcrack (music=crack), Friday, 28 March 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Canadians are hot, and also they are lumberjacks, and one day I will go there and take a picture to prove it.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Must...RESIST...quoting..."Lumberjack...Song!"...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Bruce, I thought you were so rugged!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I like how the German episode had it be the Austrian border police instead of the Mounties.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i like canada.

(how easy is it for american lawyers to set up shop in canada, btw?)

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 March 2003 07:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I was briefly a lumberjack, and I have pictures. Maybe someday I'll scan them in and post them.
But the fact that I made the effort to take pictures should let you know just how serious of a lumberjack I was.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

How would we know that you weren't just an actor playing a lumberjack?

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 29 March 2003 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

how easy is it for american lawyers to set up shop in canada, btw?

Probably the same as changing states for most area of law except for Quebec who have their own basis closer to Freedom law.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 29 March 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

How would we know that you weren't just an actor playing a lumberjack?
because the pictures aren't very good. and I look like shit, as no actor would allow themselves to do. really, I never looked so much like a scrawny city boy as when I was a great northern quebec lumberjack

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 29 March 2003 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Well post the picture already!

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 29 March 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Horace. I come off as this nice, decent fella, which is just a ruse to get unwitting Pacific Northwesterners to come to Winnipeg and become my minions. THANKS FOR BLOWING IT FOR ME.

I've never jacked any lumber (though I have "sanded down my ol' lovelog", if you get my meaning), but I'm still hot.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 29 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I applied to work on a tree farm, they didnt take me. That summerI got a job at a car wash instead, starting my 5 year career in the gas station service industry.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

So is 'Crep', 'so', and 'N', clearly meaning Ned is hungry and we should get him some pancakes.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or what about, right where the northern tree line would be in the west where it says "fuck you and your universal health care"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)
