ILM/E Chicago meet up?

So I'm getting used to being here, but have fallen out of the ILM habit. Anyone up for a meet up sometime early October? I'm in Hyde Park, as I suspect Nitsuh is. I want Josh to come up and visit from nowhereland as well. There are also a few other Chicago-ish people as I recall. Raise yer. hands and suggest a date. Among other places, there's a nice dive on 55th called the Cocktail Lounge which would be a nice spot.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm in the Western suburbs. Would the Cocktail Lounge be 21+? Of course, as most IL*ers are older than I, please don't revolve any plans around me. Not that you would. Errr...

Melissa W, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll be in San Francisco in two weeks time. Come and drool at Miss Eurotrash. ;-)

nathalie, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait, are you talking about Jimmy's? Not exactly the pride of Chicago, but for Hyde Park I suppose it would do.

I actually live up in Wicker Park, though, so -- if it's all the same transportation-wise for everyone -- someplace like Rainbo or Gold Star might be even better.

Other Chicagoans = Kerry, Scott from Stop Smiling, and I think someone else who I'm not remembering properly.

But yeah, this sounds like a great idea, and I'd be more than happy to help organize or transport or host or whatever.

Nitsuh, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nitsuh--Wicker Park...there's this place I really like there across from Reckless Records called the Local Grind (nice job screwing up the play on words there), that would be an ideal place for meeting up. Cute place, good coffee, nice appetizer-type food, and just couches everywhere instead of tables and chairs. But I understand if everyone else wants to meet up at some place where alcoholic beverages are served.

Melissa W, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I might make it if i can hitch hike . Chicago is only 9 or 10 hours away !

anthony, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(sort of) unrelated topic: am thinking about moving to Chicago (now that moving back to nyc fills me with a nameless, vague dread.) a good idea?

jess, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're asking the wrong people. :) Of course, we'd be hopelessly biased. Objectively, it really depends on what you want to do (school? work?). I've heard horror stories first-hand of finding jobs - lots of layoffs. The cost of living is escalating, but you can still find decent, affordable places if you work at it. It also depends on your tolerance of weather extremes. In reality, it's not that much worse than the Northeast, weather-wise, but I still have a lot of friends who whine about it.

I'm up for a meet-up. I live in Lakeview, but I don't care where it is. Getting out the neighborhood would be fine for me.

Kerry, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no *particular* reason. just a change of scenery. can't work up the courage to move *out* of the country, and sick of southeastern pennsylvania.

jess, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmph. Nowhereland? Anyway, 1) it's "down" to Chicago, not "up", from here, regardless of where your urban snobbery places our cities metaphorically, and 2) I don't have a car. So there are difficulties.

Josh, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cocktail Lounge is indeed 21 plus. However, Mel's suggestion sounds good. I'm up for that. Time? Date? Saturday, Oct. 13 sound good? Oh -- and Josh, if you do find your way up to here, I'm willing to host you. I have this fold-out couch number which you could use or something.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Local Grind -- where the Real World kids hang out. :)

And no smoking, either. But it's fine with me because it's only a block or two from my apartment.

Nitsuh, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is there a Real World season being filmed in Chicago? Heavens.

Melissa W, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hello, I would certainly come. This is a good idea! Any neighborhood is fine. I can help with transportation, too, if needed. My car works most of the time. The second weekend of Oct. (sat., the 13th) is ideal for me as my mother is visiting the weekend before but, of course, if that's bad for others...

scott p., Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and if Local Grind's lack of alcoholic refreshments is bothersome to anyone, you'd all be welcome to pick up some drinks and wander over to my place. You'd have to listen to indie, and some of you might have to sit on the floor, but it'd solve Melissa's 21-and-over problem. We'd just have to deliberately shield the alcohol from her like the upstanding, responsible adults we doubtless are.

Nitsuh, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That sounds like a good solution, and it's mighty kind of you.

I'm gonna have to bring my camera - heh heh....

Kerry, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nitsuh, yes that would be brilliant! It's terribly nice.

scott p., Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How far is it from Kansas Ciyt?

Pennysong Hanle y, Tuesday, 18 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a good 500 miles I'd say. I don't know how many hours, since I can't remember which interstate goes to KC.

Kerry, Tuesday, 18 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You'd probably have to go through St. Louis to I-55 or up to Iowa and straight across, I'd think. If you took the second route, you could pick up Josh. ;)

scott p., Tuesday, 18 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, gang, are we still going to do this?

BTW, the national news is reporting a thwarted attack on the Sears Tower....

Kerry, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Hello my fellow native Chicagoans . . .

I am visiting family next weekend so who wants to meet up April 5 or 6th at a Chicago locale of your choosing? "Make suggestions"!

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Somewhere accessible by the Metra.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool, Mel! Metra will dump you at Union Station or Northwest Station, I believe, but perhaps if we coordinate correctly, I could pick you up and give you a ride to wherever? Or if I also come in on Metra we can time it so we can share a taxi to wherever.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Should be Apr. 6 (Sun) to work for me. We should pick a locale first -- wicker park, loop, etc.?

If we're doing an all ages gig Local Grind was indeed a nice spot.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Mel, are you 21 yet?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Local Grind is no more, although the thing that's replaced it appears to be basically Local Grind II, the Search for Curly's etc.

I'd be fine with anywhere: the only real advantage to doing something a little westward would be better parking for those who need it. I'll be happy to go wherever, though, and I'll be looking forward to seeing you again, Felicity!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

And everyone!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

(I might try and get hold of Scott P for this, too -- Felicity, you would like him.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes! I am excited to see you all.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm down w/ anything. Either day is fine. Felicity are you still planning to go to the ChiSox game on Sunday?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I just recently learned that I can't on Sunday but are you going to Saturday's game?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Felicity, I am 19.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

It's all good. Ok, so maybe Coffee Grind II or a resturant? Let's hear from Amateurist, oops and the rest of the cast of "Chicago Restaurants: Search & Destroy."

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I might try and get hold of Scott P for this, too

aww, bless. I guess I don't post enough to be considered a regular ILXer, but I'd try to come if that's fine then.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I'm most likely going on Sat.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:24 (twenty-three years ago)

.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i am up for a meet on sun. night. i am also not 21 yet

todd swiss (eliti), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm afraid I can't make it this weekend - I have to dogsit on Saturday and I have to celebrate someone's b-day on Sunday.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

ok then, sounds like a mellow Sunday night dealio it will be.

Local Grind is no more, although the thing that's replaced it appears to be basically Local Grind II, the Search for Curly's etc.

n, could you elaborate? Unless we just want to be all Wicker Parkist and go to Jinx. Amateurist, WHERE are you?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Huh, er, what? What's happening? We're meeting Jack Palance?

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi AMst., where was it you wanted to go when we were fetishizing the Irish and the Italians, again? Some Red Apple place or something?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.cs.northwestern.edu/~tisue/orourke-covers/redapple.jpg

Northwest Side all-you-can-eat Polish buffet bretheren are unbelievably cheap, and good, too, if you don't mind gaining a few pounds gorging yourself on potato pancakes, fat polish sausages, sauerkraut, pasta, fresh fruit, salad, cookies, and pudding.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Felicity, "Local Grind" was replaced with something called "Filter," except that "Filter" is pretty much indistinguishable from "Local Grind." It was like they tore the whole room up and then suddenly changed their mind and put everything back, except with different lighting. It is just a coffee shop with lots of couches. No smoking. Not the best coffee.

Jinx would be great, but it's a bit small, no? We'd be awfully conspicuous. Potato pancakes sound excellent, but I am not eating a Smog record no matter how much you pay me.

Chicagoans also note: Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players at Schubas on Wendesday.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Incidentally that description (of the Red Apple) was from some website; I don't know how I'd describe it myself but honestly it doesn't seem like ILX fare.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm . . . more suggestions?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I am bad enough thinking of bars to go to -- when it comes down to coffee shops and restaurants I am no help whatsoever. And I'm thinking a restaurant is probably not the best idea, what with all of that formalized sitting-and-eating stuff involved. Coffee shops in my neighborhood = Jinx, Atomix, Aion, Laetizia's ...

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

(I don't know of coffee shops in other neighborhoods because, you know, I'm not sure why I'd go to them.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't entirely feel entitled to poke my nose in, since I post on this board like once a month at best, but this seemed like as good a time as any to say: hey, I'm in Chicago now, I have no friends, and I'd like to meet some of you at some point. Does that read as pathetic as I think it does?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Keith, I was thinking during my drive home about inviting you -- I was more worried you'd be too good for us and stuff! Please do come by. (Also, since you're looking in here: you should have some mail from me tomorrow.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Any plan is fine with me. I'm just happy to see you. As I said, just tell me where to be when and I'll come over. I think the key thing is just to have a place big enough for us that will be cool with us hanging out for a while and not necessarily consuming a lot. Maybe there is an outdoor patio/beer garden type thingy somewhere if it's not too cold? Come on, it's Chicago -- there's gotta be something.

(Sorry, Sterl that you are still getting notifications from this ancient thread but I'll do almost anything to avoid starting new threads! Plus I thought the long hiatus would look funny later.)

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

not necessarily consuming a lot

going against the spirit of the fap

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, that's the diff. between an old skool "meet up" and les nouveaux "FAPs."

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never seen anyone carded at the Hopleaf on Clark, especially not in the afternoon. They have nice big wooden booths too, and good beer. Mel, do you look young? (Also, it's not really too far from the Lawrence Meta stop.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Meta = what the hipsters are calling Metra these days.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Also if they do card we can turn up our collective noses at Bruno the free-jazz-releasing bartender and head around the corner to the falafel place.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Mel looks beautiful and will probably get carded, if only as an attempt at flirtation, so I can't get behind that plan.

(Amst., what was that email all about? Please explain offline. Thanks.)

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, you mean the one with all the pictures of flounder dyed orange? I'll explain.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it some sort of surreal-mail experiment?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

What's surreal about that? Don't tell me: you haven't been back to Chicago in a while.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

You're right: my Zone F Meta Pass is expired.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, no matter, Zone F has changed a bit in the past few years as well:

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, they really let the Ft. Sheridan golf course go. I think they are taking the idea of water hazard a little too literally.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, since someone needs to make the call, I will ponder on this and float something in the morning. I'm thinking Andersonville is a good area for this, if nobody minds.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, pretend I didn't say that, my "make a firm suggestion" impulse crossed with my "go to sleep" impulse and everything went wrong. I will still ponder, though.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I for one would be more comfortable if you pondered until after April Fool's Day.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, I've got it, the Alumni Club in Lincoln Park is just perfect, and they never card -- I know because I'm there all the time...

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

oh hooray, I am coming as a Lincoln Park Trixie! Maybe I can borrow my cousin's Jetta.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be the guy in the silky shirt with the gelled-up hair.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

(on the off-chance that readers and lurkers may not know about Lincoln Park Trixies)

I love to talk about the Trixies because it is rather close to Home:

"Monday, 7 Apr 2003
Cubs Season Opener
Better plan early to take Monday as a sick day. After a long winter with no Kyle Farnsworth, it's time again to put on your best swooning outfit and pose on the bleachers."

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:14 (twenty-three years ago)

OMG, I am cracking up at the Come Ride in my Jetta article. Glad to see this site back up.

Come on, Chicago fellas, you all want Lincoln Park Trixies and don't you know it.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

We must all gather outside of the bar and yell "Wooooooo!" whilst pumping our fists in the air and giving each other air-hugs else we will shame the trixies.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I still get a kick out of "The Man Who Did Not Belong in Lincoln Park." (It mentions Kincade's. I was at Kincade's this weekend. Note to everyone: do not go to Kincade's. Even if it's to see someone you haven't seen in ages. Even if your dearest friend is dying in the restroom and pleads for you to be there, do not go to Kincade's.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Amst.and Nab., you would make very good Trixiemales.

I like the sad photo of the Jetta damaged by one of Sammy Sosa's home runs.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this Diamond's fiancee? (no offense to fiancees real or fictional)

I actually grew up and went to school in L.P. when it was but perhaps 1/4 to the fancy neighborhood it is now. I remember going to Peter's for chicken after school--no such lunch counters there any more. In fact my family was victim of gentrification--the landlord decided to convert our apartment into luxury condos and build another three-flat in our huge backyard, so out we went.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

In other words: don't step.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I really want the pinefox to come fetishize this.

I was so on track to be a bona fide Lincoln Park Trixie, like my high school friends. Where did I go wrong?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist was in one of the late-70s Lincoln Park Puerto Rican street gangs.

I was very indirectly a victim of the gentrification of that one block in Evanston by the Chicken Shack.

Felicity, it was your alterna-rock high school peers who led you astray.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

verily, the predecessors of hstencil

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

haha nope, that is no associate of mine. Although I must admit I have spent quite a bit of time at the Gin Mill. Best place to catch Red Wings hockey.

Btw, felicity, did you see this?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

!! The Alpha Trixiemale !!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Diamond, you just got home from drinking beersh in LP with your frat brothers, didn't you?? Perhaps to walk "Kegger" your Chocolate Lab?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, I don't have a dog but if I was to get one I think I would get a lab!

Come on felicity, I know you hang out at Hi-Tops after the Cubs games.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 05:06 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh yes, that's the Mecca. I have been to the at Bank One Ballpark aka "Wrigley West" where Gracie plays now.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I have a suggestion: Kopi's ("A Traveler's Cafe"), in Andersonville -- on Clark near I think Berwyn.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Kopi sounds good. Nearest El stop, please?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Berwyn on the Red Line, I believe. Also note: there are plenty of constantly-empty BYOB restaurants in the area (e.g. New Saigon), so if anyone gets peckish and bored with Kopi we can always wander off for a long "dinner."

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Time?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Are any of you on the trixie bboards, by any chance? [coff, coff, coff]

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I am coming back from glamorous South Bend that afternoon, so why don't you start whenever and I'll catch up with you no later than 7:30 or 8.

The best thing about the Trixies is that they like baseball.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

They only like baseball if it's north of Madison. Which means they don't like baseball.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem, "baseball" is a game played with 9 players per side.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh man, Felicity, are you traveling with my good friends on the South Shore Rail thingie? Or are you just making this up so we all get to, like, wait in awed silence for your fashionable arrival?

Does 6:30 at Kopi sound acceptable to everyone?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

That's right -- London, New York, South Bend -- it's all such a glamorous blur of Special K and McDonald's drive-thrus. No, family obligation.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

How many folks are planning on coming? I'm asking because don't think Kopi accommodates large crowds very well -- especially during the dinner hour. (I know cuz I'm there at least once a week.) You might have better look at Cafe Boost, a block away at Clark and Balmoral. Also, I'm bummed that I can't meet you all -- I've got plans at 7 pm.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

...Although I have actually met Nabisco thrice, once at the MCA, once at Jinx, and once at a Mountain Goats show. We mostly talked about Donald Antrim.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

But that was all in my pre-ILX days.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

On my first post: look=luck.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Kopi Cafe
5317 N Clark St (1/2 block north of Berwyn)

Directions:

Metra: Union Pacific/North Line to Ravenswood (arrives at 6:04 or 6:48), walk east on Lawrence to Clark, north on Clark.

CTA: Take Clark bus (22) to Berwyn, or take red line to Berwyn stop, walk west on Berwyn to Clark.

Drive: you cannot hope to park on Clark St. Best to find parking on Ashland north of Foster, or on a E/W street east of Clark.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

...Or in the USBank parking lot. There's a sign up about "Bank Customers Only -- Violators Will Be Towed" -- but I've parked there many, many, many times. And it's always full at night, when the bank is obviously closed. So, it's a good risk if you can't find anything elsewhere. (As long as you don't say I didn't warn you.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

That should work for me. I'm going to the White Sox game earlier in the day, so I may be a bit later depending upon how that plays out.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd quite like to go to the Sox game root for my fantasy faves if the weather is bearable and I finish my errands in Lake Forest early enough on Saturday.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha! Jaymc! I would have never guessed that was you!

I should apologize, though, I remember being very spaced out and unresponsive at least one of the times I ran into you.

We can meet closer to 6, if you want to drop by for 45 minutes and say hi to people?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Also: does anyone want to take Jaymc's advice concerning Cafe Boost? I admit, I suggested Kopi sort of by memory, since I don't exactly spent a lot of time driving up to Andersonville to drink coffee. Boost? A block away? Would Amateurist or another up-north dweller like to offer a second opinion on Kopi's capacity versus Boost?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Too bad I can't come to Chicago and KICK JAYMC's ASS AT TRIVIAL PURSUIT!!!!

hstencil, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

That would be great, Nabisco, if we could meet at 6. I'm actually somewhat surprised you remember me at all -- otherwise I would've brought it up long ago!

I'm ignoring Hstencil for now. I've met him, too, unfortunately.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

ouch! I thought we were friends.

*sheds a silent tear*

hstencil, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, bro, we still tight. I'm just funnin' you.

(At least until we break out the pie pieces.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

the only pie pieces you'll be breakin' out you'll be havin' a la mode, dig?

hstencil, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course I remember you, J: I spent like several weeks feeling guilty about running into you just sort of going "errr [grunt] ahhm okay bye."

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

(I don't understand this Chicago lingo. But I am filled with a strange and perverse glee that it exists. < /pf>)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Boost (arrrgh the name arrrgh the name) might be a better option as it is usually near-empty and has plenty of tables. Less character than Kopi, but we can provide character I'm sure. Kopi does get awfully crowded and except for that spot up by the window, the tables are rather small and it might not facilitate an Algonquin-like roundtable.

So let's say Boost, 6-ish. All in agreement? Good.

OK, directions are more or less the same except Boost is several blocks north, on the NW corner of Balmoral and Clark. You can't miss it; it has big windows and is just to the east of a sad-looking gay men's boutique called Big Boys. It's across the street from a video store.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I just want to point out the wonderful irony: this ILX meetup will take place only a stone's throw from chez Pitchfork! Place bets now on how this disturbance in the balance of the universe will manifest itself: storms? staticky golden aura shot through the evening sky? me missing Six Feet Under to see you lot?

Boost at 6. I am there.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

When is Six Feet Under on? By some curious whim of the Fates, I have HBO.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Boost at 6. I'll be there, maybe a little later. And Nabisco, my inbox is feeling strangely empty today...

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, a Northside ILX meet-up, yuck-o. You lot should take it to Soul Vegetarian, word.

hstencil, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

if anyone is looking for something to do on saturday night you can buy me a beer at the ko & the knockouts show at the subterranean. i believe they're opening for holly golightly.

otto, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Glad this works out. See you on Sunday.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh wow: I just want to note that at 3 pm on Sunday, Ersatz Audio recording artist and Weekend Records & Soap proprietor MAGAS is going to be performing at a taping of CHIC-A-GO-GO. I am trying to decide if I am at all up for attending this (and presumably, by extension, appearing on Chic-a-Go-Go).

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Urgh that show just riles me.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist will be there!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, so everyone knows:

Sunday, April 6
from 6:00 p.m.
Cafe Boost
5400 N. Clark Street (at Balmoral)

I think we should spell Chicago "!ago" from now on.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, I shouldn't've been so flippant. I hate the way she interviews musicians with that sock puppet in that googoogaga tone of voice. Is the idea that Chic-a-Go-Go is a kids' show just a conceit or do any children actually watch the show? Also the camerawork and sound mix makes my head hurt.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't possibly explain Chic-a-Go-Go, and to be honest I don't think I've ever been able to watch it for more than 15 minutes. But I like Magas, and the thought of actually viewing a Chic-a-Go-Go taping and dancing with little kids and such ... it seems like one of those things you should make yourself do just to demonstrate to yourself that your life is more interesting than you thought.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 5 April 2003 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

That's true. It would probably supply me with anecdotes that I could milk for years if not decades.

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 5 April 2003 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist hates fun!

hstencil, Saturday, 5 April 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

shockah.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 5 April 2003 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

'tis true, 'tis true.

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 5 April 2003 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

DOWN WITH FUN! OFF WITH FUN'S HEAD!

really amateurist, i totally swear (nabisco), Saturday, 5 April 2003 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the final bump.

Sixish at Boost, address above.

Don't forget Daylight Savings Time!

nabisco (nabisco), Sunday, 6 April 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't be coming, sorry. Hope to meet you all some other time.

Getting to Chicago is just really hard for me to do.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"When is Six Feet Under on? By some curious whim of the Fates, I have HBO. "
Sorry to hijack this thread, but but but is that a THIRD series? I NEED TO KNOW.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I might be a bit late with this, Mel, but is there any way I can help? If you can get the Metra in the city I'll be happy to drive you up to Andersonville.

nabisco (nabisco), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm afraid I had to beg off this evening. Two days spent out in this frigid weather have left me wiped out and feeling quite sluggish. Also factor in the complete lack of work accomplished and I don't think I can afford the roughly hour commute each way for me from the South Side (actually I'm not sure how long it would take; the farthest north I've ever taken the red line was lawrence I think, that's like 45 minutes). Anyway, it was great to meet you yesterday felicity, and I sincerely do hope to meet the rest of you at some point.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 6 April 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Well this just ended. Very low-key. Felicity was there, as was Nabisco, as was Sterling, as was Todd (?? arrgh I forgot your other handle??), as was I. It was nice to meet you all and to see Nabisco again and to enjoy a bottomless cup of (decaf) coffee in your presences. Thank you all.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Very pleasant meet-up indeed. (jaymc was there earlier too). Felicity was supah-nice, Amateurist much as his posts, Todd (Swiss) v. quiet probably hiding depths beneath.

Gossip quotient = low.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist much as his posts

Uh oh (?)

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

no. not uh oh at all.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i was quiet, but i had no idea what music you guys were talking about! haha. i am stuck in my lame indie world. everyone was very nice indeed.

todd swiss (eliti), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice to see you all! Mel, I'll be back this summer and with more time perhaps I can give you a ride.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Todd, we can talk about indie any time you like.

I totally forgot all of my gossipy questions when I got there. And I apologize for playing with my food.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 April 2003 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I wish I could've stayed longer to break the ice a bit more. But I was glad to see you again, Nabisco -- and to meet Todd and Sterling. (Although I must admit, Sterling, I couldn't follow your Simon Reynolds conversation, either! But you knew that...)

On the flipside, the Ethiopian restaurant I had to drag myself off to was yummy (Ras Dashen on Broadway).

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus, Ethiopian restaurants are taking over the city!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Pardon me:

Chicago Taken Over by Jesus, Ethiopian Restaurants

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The tip-of-the-tongue mandy moore song from Centerstage that I was banging on about is "I Wanna Be With You".

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

HEY HEY. I might be in Chicago in early May, if everything works out. Anyone want to meet for a beer, if I make it in? Is it futile asking so soon after a meetup?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"Early May" is currently looking like the busiest time of my life, ever, but if I'm in town during the same bit you are I can certainly make a little time!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

How early in May?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm trying to firm it all up, but it looks like between the 5th and 7th. (It's a work-related junket, which means I won't be available for a good portion of the time, but generally evenings are free.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

If I'm not busy, I'd like to come and do an FAP right this time.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Me too! I hated to bag last night, but I just felt like hell.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, a bit more firmed up...they said yes to me going to Chicago, so it's just a question of making the official arrangements. So if you'll be free May 5 or 6 evening (hopefully I'll be in and free both nights) a small get together would be cool.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

And I'll be there the weekend before: 25th evening to 18th morning. It's a shame I'll miss Sean, as I owe him a rare LP's worth of pints.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 April 2003 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Leave the pints with nabisco, I'll pick them up.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey! That's in two days. Anyone want to meet up? My host has no specific plans apart from Friday, so Saturday/Sunday afternoon/evening is cool.

I also might need someone to keep some Stump EPs/mini LP until Sean C arrives, assuming they open the clear plastic bubble forming over Toronto.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm outta town this weekend, so I'll miss you, Andrew :(

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry. The weekend's rilly bad for me. :-(

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Looks like I'll be back in Chicago (okay, Northern Indiana) for about a week and a half at the beginning of June. To paraphrase Carey on the London FAP thread, I wouldn't be so bold as suggest a meet up, but if there's anything going on...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

What in God's name are you doing in Northern Indiana? That's in my backyard, but I may be moving right about then.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Leave me the Stump, Andrew! I promise I'll, umm, give some of it to Sean.

I'm here this weekend, but terribly broke and sorting out a bunch of show plans: Larry Tee and W.I.T. on Friday (yeah, yeah, but it'll be fascinating), friend's band on Saturday (possibly), and Bunker showcase / Legowelt show on Sunday. Not sure which of these I'll be able to do: anyone interesting in Official Chicago Electro Weekend 2003?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

What in God's name are you doing in Northern Indiana?

My girlfriend's from South Bend, IN, Kerry.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Leave me the Stump, Andrew! I promise I'll, umm, give some of it to Sean.
*cries*

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, he'll fly to just outside the plastic bubble and let you see it. And play you some of it, depending on the thickness of the bubble.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Looks like meeting for Nabisco for coffee/Stump transfer some afternoon, then. Name a time and place, man. (I don't know where I'm coming from, so something "central" would be great if possible).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

See, now this was a good use of a perfectly good old thread. Hooray for glamorous South Bend.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

A and N, let me know if you make any coffee plans. I'll be in Hyde Park all day Sunday but I will have some time Saturday early evening, if my presence is at all desired.

4mateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I go home soon. I'll check ILX from an internet cafe in Dublin tomorrow afternoon, and then the next time will be when I'm in Chicago, if there's one around.

Hope I see ye (if I don't, I'll just mail the vinyl to Sean (and cry)).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

4mat and Andrew: do you want to say Saturday, "early evening?" My gut instinct is once again to just say Jinx and make life easier on myself -- but 4mat (Format!), can you think of anything super-convenient either downtown or Lakeviewish?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

See, now this was a good use of a perfectly good old thread. Hooray for glamorous South Bend.

Felicity :) This made me laugh! If I'd have been drinking milk, I assure you it would now be coming out of my nose.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

We'll have to settle for Rio Hen Grog.

4mateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Alright, do you want to say Jinx at, er, 6.00?

I will have friend with me, so you can turn up later if you want. I look more or less like my picture in The tears of a clown? , but with glasses. Grey top, blue jeans.

And that's it!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 26 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I'll be able to make it at 6, unfortunately, as I am meeting a friend in Evanston at 7. I'll be at the Dusty Groove garage sale in a moment, though, so perhaps I'll see someone there.

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I can be at Jinx at 6. Andrew, are you fine with finding Jinx? It's on the north side of Division just east of Damen. I have no idea where you'll be coming from, but if you're cabbing just "Division and Damen" will get you there. If you're taking the train, you can get off of the Blue Line at Division and walk west for a little while. But it sounds like you know where you're headed.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 26 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i was right there (damen+division) a moment ago, but i had to run, oh well. hope you guyses have fun.

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

ARRRRGH, my trip has just been cancelled! =( =( =(

Nabisco, could I trouble you to bundle those up and send em up my way? I'll pay you all relevant costs and even send you something cool, too. Let me know.

I wanted to meet all y'all but I guess that'll have to wait now. It's only 8 - 10 hours' drive, maybe I'll just drive down someday soon, instead!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm moving to Chicago in September. Maybe a FAP in the fall? A real one? Although part of me is afraid. With Sterling, nabisco, and Amateurist all in the same room, things could get wordy.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I just wave my hands around a lot, no need to fear. If I'm around in the fall I'm surely up for a FAP.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

P.S. I don't think Nabisco will still be here by then . . .

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Right, the New York crew is all glammy; we Chicagoans are all urbane and Eliot Gould-y:

STERLING (filling pipe): These bhangra tracks, old sport, are indeed a challenge to Heideggerian notions of time and being.

AMATEURIST: How positively droll! (adjusts ascot) You've always been one to underestimate Heidegger's schwantzlange, haven't you.

NABISCO (removing David Hyde Pierce from record bag): That's not what Cixous would say! (All burst into riotous laughter.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer you guys, anyway.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course, Sean: I'll mail them up to you just as soon as I listen to them myself have a free second.

And yes, Kenan, sadly I'll have left Chicago by September -- though I'm sure I'll be back in town now and then and agitating for FAPs while I'm at it.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

(By the way, we all also do that clenched-chuckle thing where we keep our jaws locked while we laugh.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Tape em, MP3 em, do what you must, nabisco. Just as long as they gets here! Thanks again!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...

Are you an axe-murderer? ;)

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

im flying to chicago on thursday - and actually have a job interview that afternoon... i really have no idea when i'll be back in nyc though. i think it was a bit silly for me to arrive last week with $300 and expect to be able to find a job/apartment/etc before it ran out. it's almost run out. going to the met tomorrow with stence and rosemary if u wanna call in sick

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

yo la tengo is playin saturday, oh boy, thats where i will be

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

though im excited about stalking the "black-sweater-boy" that i almost met outside the Interpol show last year in Chicago. though im not sure if he and his friends were checking me out because one of them liked me or because i looked like an asshole in my skinny tie and tight pants.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 02:11 (twenty-three years ago)

No, there was just this bit of lime on your chin...

guy who was wearing a black sweater at last year's Interpol show (nabisco), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, it was probably a navy blue sweater.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

oh no phil...you must come back to ny, yes?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

of course! i just need some money first... i think i might be working at the sushi-samba thats opening up in chicago - unless i fuck up the interview

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 5 June 2003 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, of all the Chicago threads that routinely get revived, this one's been left out!

Is anyone interested in accompanying me to this tonight?

I didn't realize this was an "e-mail notification" thread -- what does that mean? Sterling gets copies of all our responses?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't be up for it either, I'm pretty tired after the show last night and just want to do something mellow. I want to go see "I Heart Huckabees" sometime this weekend though, and if others want to make an excursion out of it, we can.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread brought back fond memories for me.

It's a very different Chicago from just a year and a half ago.

I only read like half of it before being weirded out. And that wasn't that long ago!
