How good-looking are pop stars and film stars?

When people say such and such celeb isn't very good looking, would they say the same if they met them in everyday life? Or is the bar higher for celebrities, cause hey, they're the pinnacle of the species? Or would loads of people you know or see in the street be classed as 'renowned beauties' if they were on screen and had beauticians and stylists on hand to bring out the best in them? I veer towards the latter. As I may have mentioned before, I went to school with Jude Law. He looked basically the same as he does now, just younger, and yeah he was considered good-looking, but it wasn't like everyone was fainting and not able to understand what this god was doing in our everyday lives.

I know that the pinefox thinks all the ladies on telly are beautiful.

Leee to thread!

Darcus How? (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think Britney Spears looks like a typical Dairy Queen cashier.

tweemu (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

which perfectly explains her popularity

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Jodes, you mispelled "Avril Levigne".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

so did you!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sure i'd make a very attractive film star

I don't care as long as it's all to the ass 'n titties.

Neanderthal Boy (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume the only reason anyone considers Julia Roberts to be attractive is because she's famous, because she really just resembles that white-trash debutante Mark McKinney played in various Kids in the Hall sketches.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Without their stylists, celebrities don't look HALF as radiant as they do in the magazines. They look like the pretty girl or boy in your science class.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

At best.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never seen anyone famous even slightly resemble the people in my science class i thought were pretty. maybe that girl out of 'welcome to the dollhouse' at a pinch

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Or worse - y'know like with Heat Magazine's 45th CELEBRITIES MINGING TO FUCK special of the year - they look like US

Ferrrrrrg (Ferg), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(The only actress who even halfway resembles the one AfAm woman in my graduating class is CCH Pounder.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

If I had 5+ stylists and personal trainers following me around I'd reach the pinnacle of the species in approx 6 months.

or not.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Lenny Kr@vitz is fairly hot on tv when he's wearing his foundation, has his shirt open and is shot from low angles. I stood next to him at a show and he was short, big-headed (as I hear most photogenic people are), and had a surprisingly unclear complexion. Just a guy.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I've said it before and I'll say it again-the girl who works in my video store could be an internationally adored pinup indie singer/songwriter if she wanted to.

I have no idea if she has musical talent, but really.

Darcus How? (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

does she need it? hell no

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

There are some celebrities that are genuinely beautiful (eg: Kate Winslet, Sophie Ellis-Bextor), and others that require a lot of making up (eg: Britney Spears, Nicole Kidman).

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve Bushemi

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a lot of people expect celebrities to be better looking than the average person because people always have weird ideas about who "deserves" fame -- I guess extraordinary looks is one of attributes that is considered as justification for fame.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

shame that most girls who fit that bill are lucky if they even get as far as suicidegirls, fame-wise

(double xp)

I should have went to your school then, since none of the folks in my science class came close.

I've always thought Cameron Diaz looks like she got smashed in the face with a skillet, like Sylvester The Cat might. Maybe she has fetal alcohol syndrome, like Shannon Doherty.

Darcus How? (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

There's definitely different categories: people I fancy on screen (Nicole Kidman, say) - people I don't fancy on screen but would in real life (a lot of TV presenter types) - people I could never really fancy under any circumstances (Britney Spears, Princess Di (when she was alive, I mean)).

THEREFORE, mathswise, being on the street is a sexier experience than cinema/magazines because there are more people to fancy (i.e. 2 out of 3 of the fairly-good-looking ones, rather than 1 out of 3).

I haven't but I hear people really get into that.

Hardly any of them have bellies, which does distinguish them from most people.

The bar does still seem to be a lot higher for women than for men though (or maybe it's a different bar). I was totally mystified watching MuchMusic's 20 hottest guys countdown.

I don't really often find film stars attractive, though I do think Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Christian Bale, and Christian Slater are beautiful. Pop stars? Hm. *ponders*

http://deanna.ladyinterference.com/ilx/duranbw1993.jpg

*ponders some more*

http://deanna.ladyinterference.com/ilx/dsylviannet.jpg

*still ponders some more*

Hm.

*wink*

Ok, so that last one isn't exactly a "pop star" -- he's more like a regular musician. But honestly and seriously, I don't really go for the traditional "ooh, look at that gorgeous hunk" person. I do not get turned on by an abundance of muscles or by many of the things that seem to get most people swooning. I mean, look at the people I've gone on about thus far in this thread -- none of them are really Conventionally Attractive, and in the case of Christian Bale, it actually took me a great deal of effort to see the still-attractive aspects of him when he went all buff and slick on American Psycho. So I don't really think of many famous people as being Incredibly Gorgeous. But then again that's just me.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe sometimes we're actually attracted to the person's talent? For instance, I think a lot of singers are really attractive, but it's more that my attraction to their voice affects my perception of their looks.

Poppy (poppy), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, possibly celebrities are branded as being good-looking because they're "successful", so people end up subconsciously thinking stars are "sexy" because they want their offspring to end up with whatever those traits are that brought success.

Poppy (poppy), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Or is it because they have huge tits?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

British pop stars are never especially good looking - part of the point is that they are all everyman/woman down the local pub/indie club/branch of Tesco. Quite how they get elevated to sex symbol status is beyond me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean (Sean), Friday, 16 January 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

N's question was good.

I feel that BOTH of his own answers to it have some merit.

It was good when he mentioned me too.

In general the girls are better looking than the men (as those words already imply).

the bellefox, Friday, 16 January 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly don't think that the majority of celebrities are any better looking than the majority of people I know, if not worse looking than the majority of people I know. There are a lot of things going on as to what makes someone famous, and being flawlessly beautiful is not one of those things that is 100% required; you can take a decently attractive person and put them thru the stylist lens and turn them into something a lot more than they are. I think, to be honest, the major difference between, say, Jennifer Aniston (WHO IS A FUCKING MINGER JESUS GOD) and (ILXor female name deleted here) is that Jen set out to be a celebrity and XYZ did not.

I mean it's not necessarily that the celebrities are unattractive; I think Julia Roberts is cute for example but she's not like stunningly gorgeous oh god you see her on the streets and are flabbergasted. I've actually never seen a celeb on the street that made me go OH WOW THEY ARE AMAZING. They're basically like, oh yeah, they're pretty/handsome but then again so are any number of people I hang out with. I'm holding out hope that I'll run into Halle Berry or Kate Winslet someday.

Though maybe I just know a lot of unreasonably attractive individuals.

(This can all be turned around for men too except no one seems surprised by the idea that men are just average but let me tell you I've seen Denzel on the street like hundreds of times and he ain't all that, and actually seeing George Clooney in person was kind of a disappointment)

Allyzay, Friday, 16 January 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

To sum up, its all about the tits.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston aren't large breasted though!!! Nor, for that matter, was Denzel. Unfortunately.

Allyzay, Friday, 16 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

If Denzel had tits, i'd watch more (some) of his movies.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It would've made Training Day a much better movie.

Allyzay, Friday, 16 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Training (Bra) Day?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I would bet about 8 gazillion dollars that Halle Berry is ridiculously gorgeous in real life.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

She sez she's a different person w/o the Revlon.

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Revlon give you perfect cheekbones and eyes, as well as a ridiculously curvy figure?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry, Revlon shill!

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

OK so Jude Law is pretty stunning in person.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so serious, making love to Halle Berry would be like worshipping at a ridiculously hot and sexy temple. I would totally eat ice cream out of her butt, she's so hot.

(NO NO DELETE THE LAST SENTENCE TMI TMI oh fuck)

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that's just disgusting.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Her hotness transcends disgusting scatological norms; I imagine that only honey and buttercream comes out of there.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Doo doo buttercream.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(NB I have just grossed myself out yet I'm still standing somewhat behind what I just wrote.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like R. Kelly in reverse!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Nowhere did I state that I wanted Halle Berry to pee on me! (Although I might let her.) (ARGH DELETE DELETE DELETE)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Haters want to hate, Lovers want to love, I dont even want none of the above..."

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

HYSTERICS

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

When people say such and such celeb isn't very good looking, would they say the same if they met them in everyday life?

My contact at this temp agency looks exactly like Halle Berry (except she's white). I always thought Berry was way over-rated: pretty, nice bone structure, etc, but too bland for my tastes. However, every time I see the White Halle Berry I am mesmerised by her beauty. (it has nothing to do with her being white or Halle being black, since she is blonde and I normally hate blondes.) She stands out from everyone else. She is RIGHT THERE in front of me, an actual person who I can interact with, not just a face I see in the movies. If the Black Halle were right in front of me, I'd probably have the same reaction.

oops (Oops), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I am having a "WTF WAS I THINKING????" moment looking back upon this thread, only I know the answer.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I can't answer the part about the film stars, because I generally don't find film stars attractive. but as to the pop stars bit... well, for a start, as one of my mates once said "Pop stars aren't better looking than most people, they just *dress* better." And there's some kind of magic that automatically makes *anyone* on a stage more attractive. I don't know why it works, but it does. (Hell, I've reaped the rewards before.)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd do Kirsten Dunst.

Perverted Pete.., Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Who exactly do you consider "good-looking"? (I address this to no one in particular.)

Nowell, Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ten females that, from the top of my head, I'd tapdance over hot coals for a fifteen minute crotch wiggle with...

*Holly Valance
*Kirsten Dunst
*Britney Spears
*Milla Jovovich
*Elisa Dushku
*Jessica Biel
*Nadine from Girls Aloud
*Jennifer Love Hewitt
*Elisha Cuthbert
*Katie Holmes

(This list is not in order)

Perverted Pete..., Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So, yeah. Celebrities are good looking.

Nowell, Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

*Danger* *Danger*

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

None of these people will even so much as glance at your penis. EVER.

xxpost

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

adam., are you talking to me?

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You know Adam, I've had enough experience in the wild and wacky film industry to know that if you have money and success then that is just not true...

Perverted Pete.., Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Nowell - no

PP - Stacking Premiere at WhSmiths != the film industry.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What a coincidence, those are the SAME celebrities that Calum fancies! Do you know him, Perverted Pete? He posts on here sometimes.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

X post
I didn't think so. I just jump to conclusions too much.

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No Adam, 'fraid not. I know from first hand experience of being around people in the industry who ARE successful.

Perverted Pete..., Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record, Kirsten Dunst is in fact very beautiful in person.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Inside and out, right?

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course

Nowell (Nowell), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd [innuendo] any day!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

jaclyn smith is stunning in person.

dan (dan), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My roomate sighted her (dunst) awhile back and said she was totally busted. Maybe because she was going incognito, but busted nevertheless.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

JESSICA BIEL? I think she's HOAGLY. Plus she was on Seventh Heaven which makes her gayer than gay.

battlin' green eyeshades (Homosexual II), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Kirsten Dunst = NOT "busted".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

She was with Jake who looks exactly like he does onscreen. He was also taller than I expect most actors to be.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Kirsten is the one on the right.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear Jake Gyllenhaal's head is a meter in circumference.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw bubble boy the other night... i was THAT bored.

paul, luke, judas, timothy, etc...

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

So, apparently Timothy wasn't an apostle. He was their backup goalkeeper but due to Jesus' healing skills and an understandable fear of God, the Christians never had to make any substitutions. Then Septimus Blatterius became head of FIFA and

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

clearly the romans got bored right around #8

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
I was looking at random threads & saw the title of this & said to myself, "That must have been you" (while thinking, "That must have been me") but it was N., who I remember from when I first visited this place and who said things I would have said. I don't think that so much about N. any more, but this is more recent than I would have thought. The question was never properly answered too!

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 6 November 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

They never are.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 November 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh for heaven's sake Dan's posts.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i'd finally forgotten about that. my brain... urk

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

I think Poppy was OTM on this thread.

Although there's also the stylist/airbrush factor:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knEIM16NuPg

And also the fact that you see celebrities all the time and so whatever odd features they have become sort of smoothed out and normalised through familiarity, whereas you might see a non-famous person of equivalent ugliness and still be all yikes.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

Although I take that YouTube thing with a fucking huge pinch of salt because IIRC the 'Campaign for Real Beauty' is just a promotion by Dove, who make er cosmetics.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Dove doesn't make cosmetics, in fairness, they make shampoo and soaps. The YouTube is pretty accurate as to what goes on but I think people are becoming more and more aware of the fact.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure something similar has been posted upthread but am too lazy to look:

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no I know it's accurate but Dove sell an image just as much as any other beauty industry player.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Keira Knightley is on some kind of mad bitching-about-this-whenever-interviewed-even-if-not-asked kick about photoshopping and airbrushing, which I think is highly amusing.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

is she against it or does she want them to give her more?

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

oh this one's great
http://www.glennferon.com/portfolio1/

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

She's completely against it, she is extremely determined that the entire world know that the breasts you see on her body on movie posters and magazine covers are never, ever hers.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

They're Paul McCartney's.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

That Glenn Feron portfolio always cracks me up, his original pictures all make Beyonce look like she has one B cup and one D cup. It's like, if you posed her a little bit differently you probably wouldn't have needed to do so much airbrushing, dude.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

Though for all I know Beyonce has one giant tit and one flat one in real life, I guess.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)
