how many ILXers post, what you might call, 'in character'?

Message Bookmarked

do you feel like a specific character when you post/respond? is it something you put a degree of effort into? do you feel that others are aware of this character, and is that good or bad? perhaps you are not aware of it all

(this, for example, is not stevem in character - it is more an impersonation of a couple of people on ILX who i feel do adopt a certain character, which in turn may constitute a character of sorts for me, stevem)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I of course imagined you posting that in your gurning grinning photo mode from Tom's wedding FAP.

I tend to think I'm much more quiet and gruff in real life. Almost everyone I know denies this (keep in mind I also think I'm an introvert, which nobody believes).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha, Ned Raggett, "quiet in real life," hahahaha.

I love you, NED.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have much of a character, I'm pretty nondescript -- except for whatever people choose to hate on me for.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

my posts often use/utilise/feature forward slashes denoting that i am applying meaning to more than one term in a certain context, and also 'words' in single 'quotemarks' as demonstrated here. sometimes i wonder if people notice that and attach it to whatever perception of me they have i.e. 'stevem is the guy who does that a lot when he posts', if not some distinctly more interesting characteristic. i use perhaps/seems a lot rather than asserting my opinions too (making them effectively suggestions rather than opinions).

oh and i swear a fucking lot. and i sometimes think about really pointless stuff.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hrm. I don't feel like I modify my normal personality/character much at all when I post. I suppose I may not be the best judge though. Perhaps Ned or DB or someone else who knows me in real life can tell me if I'm drastically different here.

Ned, I 'spect you are balanced between introvert and extrovert pretty evenly. I get the impression that you are equally comfortable getting your energy from others or alone.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't put the slightest bit of effort into my ILX persona.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand, if you look up "extrovert," there is a picture of me next to the entry. And I'm giving the finger to the camera just because.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really try and be a charcter, I don't put a whole lot of thought into creating a monkier. Sometimes I'll do the West London thing, but I truly do love West London.

Am I the same offline? I don't know, similar I guess.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I say stupid things in real life too!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread was partly inspired by you jel - curious

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I am just as stupid in real life, and many ILXors can attest to that.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess my "character" is that I'm a little weirder on here than I am in real life, plus for some reason I'm less likely to engage in heated arguments on here than in real life, i.e. last night when I told my roommate she was "being stupid" for leaving for work at noon and leaving the front door unlocked so her friend could get in at 5pm to "read lines" with a friend of hers. here I'm much more diplomatic.

also in real life my Kylie Minogue love is basically unknown.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps Ned or
DB or someone else who knows me in real life can tell me if I'm drastically different here.

You're pretty much yourself, I think. This is very much a good thing!

I think this is a perfect description of me. Thanks!

Stence is not stupid.

But I HAVE met Stence and he's not stupid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't say anything different here than I do in real life, except I get a chance to talk about my petty loves and hates like viking hats or beards a lot more. But I don't have much of a character.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps the acid test might be if you were to present another ILXer with five uncredited posts, all by the same author, and whether that person could guess who the five posts were by, or indeed whether they were all by the same person.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

a viking hat would definitely add character to you Nicole (not that i don't think you have any already)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to be polite, productive and serious in real life. But my ILX persona has taken over .. please, send help ...

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

but that might not mean "in character" as much as just them being clearly themselves.

fwiw I think I am fairly similar here to real life.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I ever post in character. But I have posted a few times in costume.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Have I mentioned my monstrous thundercock lately?

"VengaDan Perry" (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You're pretty much yourself, I think. This is very much a good thing!

Thanks. Now that I think of it though... The one thing I may put more effort into on here is making sure that I phrase things a little more precisely. Since a great deal of my humor is sarcastic, I think I often run the risk of being misinterpreted when represented as text only.

But then that's pretty much par fot the course on the interweb.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I will say I am much more likely to correct someone's grammar on ILX than I am in real life, mostly because you are all out of punching range.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Then again, if someone doesn't get it when I'm being sarcastic, fuck em.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

In 'real life' I'm actually quite smart.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's okay if you think jel is a character, it's just that I don't want you to think that James in real life is a whole lot different to jel online - I do like staying in, I do like Poison, I have a small group of close friends. I guess, I do not have in me to argue with or be mean to people online, something I can do okay offline but only with people I know really well. Which means even though I've posted here for three years, I'm still not sure how well I know most ilxers.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan is full of hate.

Nicole has plenty of character!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, like tomorrow. For instance.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"perhaps the acid test might be if you were to present another ILXer with five uncredited posts, all by the same author, and whether that person could guess who the five posts were by, or indeed whether they were all by the same person.

Surely, that just means a person has posted a lot and has a recognisable style and range of interests?

Maybe, I've misinterpreted 'in character' as meaning a negative trait? i.e they are acting in a way that is not really 'them', which I'm not.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

jel i think you are reflecting your actual genuine character a lot in your posts, which is also what i mean with this thread really. it's not like i've ever seen a post by you and thought 'oh he's lying' - i believe everything you say about yourself, tho often it feels like you do actually revel in pointing out that you don't like x because it's not y or whatever on threads in a sort of...unsatisfying way? as in being contrary for the sake of it, or highlighting your eccentricity, clockwork style, to make an unwarranted point. no offence dude, i just think it's interesting (and i have other examples of other people in mind, having already thought about myself).

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i wasn't meaning it as a negative trait, just an interesting trait

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it would appear to be true tho that some people on here ARE acting in character(s) they do not resemble offline. the most apparent example may be c-mang.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

lauren are you still bitter over that fracas? i've been working out, i think i can take you.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't met enough ilxors to judge, but I'll bet that the craziest or most irritating people (like c-man) are probably just as obnoxious in real life. They may not be as overt about it, but it's still there.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

My roommate has a battered copy of The Crying of Lot 49 on the back windowsill in her car, which makes me think she might be brilliant. Of course when I jokingly said "my favorite part of the book is when the parking lot gets weepy" she said "yeah it's a really sad book!" so maybe not? Plus the Ryan Adams/Jesse Malin thing.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to mention the Tweedy. Not that Wilco is the worst band in the world, but...

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

that gushing over Tweedy was pretty heinous but all of the abovepales in comparison to the Postal Service these days.

In real life, I do actually look like a monitor.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve brings up a good, if obvious, point in the thread
(I'm basically suprised this didn't come up in 2002, tho I haven't done a search).

I used to reckon I was pretty non-descript during my first 5 months here - known for having great taste in music ;-) but otherwise confined to messing up lists on ILM and talking dance and pop with Steve, Ronan et al. Since I became an accross the board ILXor, I think more of my real traits have come through - inappropriate/bizarre sense of humour, occasional self-pitying, mentalism, a sense of sym/empathy, a desire to, I dunno, be friendly. Basically, I am in character, but hold the appropriate real life traits back. Like Ned, I'd describe myself as something of an introvert and I'm also very private, which can, depending on the person, make me hard to connect with/get to know. I'm also way more intolerant of bullshit, presumptuosness and fakery IRL (ironic because I'm also tolerant of the foibles of people half the time and have a fair amount of patience in general, unless we're talking about my current work situation), but that doesn't show so much here because I'm conspicuosly absent when you peeps start arguing.

Your mileage may vary as not many of you know me offline and those who do haven't known me too long, but Steve, Matt etc can add their thoughts if they so wish.

Also, I suspect that people don't necessarily have a "character" as such on ILX - I kind of feel certain traits you aren't so aware of may pop up here and there (ie rampant aggression and argumentativeness every so often, plus issues like c-man, which I personally find tolerable or ignorable b/c we're also free to ignore him or laugh - he's never worth getting pissed off with). Self-assessment is a tough thing.

Oh yeah, did I mention I overthink and ramble?

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i like tweedy and used to work with someone in the postal service!!! my copy of lot 49 sits on my bookshelf! set me up gear!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The main people I wonder about are the ones who act all misanthropic on ILX (Alex in NYC, Jess, etc.) and whether they are really so, um, on edge all the time in real life. I sure hope not. Then I wonder if they aren't really like that, why they feel the need to pretend to be like that. Is it a fear of revealing something personal? (which I can understand to some degree, although this is ILX, it's still the internet).
I also usually feel pretty nondescript. I doubt if you took five of my posts at random and showed them to another ILXor, they would be able to figure out they were me.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

you got me in a nutshell nabsico, man of few words me

i kind of wanted to include things like RJG's commas and Tom and Ally's e-mail addresses thing in here too (the latter being such a powerful tool for empthasising the attitude with which the post had been made, as with emoticons, whilst also inventive and engaging - demonstrating a character of sorts even)

i have often felt that gareth and the pinefox sometimes post in a similar way (sometimes not at all, of course)...and, perhaps more interestingly, it seems to have had an influence on my own style.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

re: RJG's 'thing', Tom & Ally's 'thing'

ILXers having 'things' = totally classic as far as i am concerned, part of me wants to use this thread just to celebrate that a little, as well as contemplate it

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I believe that Steve reacts to me the same way both on and off ILX, so I definitely don't have an ILX character. Sorted!

1) I read the last stories in "after the quake" last night. I've almost given up on the Counterfeiters. I think I will start on the new Andrey Kurkov book or this other book by this Chinese guy whose name escapes me, I know it's something like wang shoo.

2) I never listened to dance music.

3) It was Betty Angel and Silas McKinley, fugitives or freedom fighters depending on your point of view. David Q didn't really like either of them, as they were typical of the sort of band wagon freedom fighters that had cropped up since the Techno-Corp war had begun. "Oh not those two" he thought to himself, "I'd rather be totured that have to spend even a minute with them, I'll have to shoot the fuckers". But, it was far too late for that, as Betty had already spotted David in the shadows.

4) I had a pretty strange dream last night...
A group of ILXORs and I were walking along the road I used to take to and from my junior school. Mark S, Julio and Tom were there. We were playing with these things that looked like Rubik's Cubes, but they had buttons that you pressed to play musical notes...we were all playing these beep beep tunes, they were pretty good. As we turned the corner into the road I used to live in Starry and Alang came skipping up the road also playing their musical Rubik's Cubes, and singing "Germany Germany"...

Then I woke up to the sound of the telephone ringing next door, it was 4:58am.

I am going to patent the Music Cube!

5) thanks Tom!
ILX would be so empty without me.

here are 5 random posts of mine from ilm:

1. The Joshua Tree? I heard Bono has a small penis!

2. The ODB, obv. Both his amblems.

3. he should like Black Sabbath or something. or Yes. at least El-P likes Yes. You can't know [sic] him for that.

4. Incubus? More like Succubus!

5. C'mon people, there is a ventriloquist rap!

Those don't illustrate just how often i use the word 'though' or mis-spell/type things.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be surprised if the majority of people on ILX are any more "constructed" here than they are in real life. I mean, my persona here is not identical to me (though not particularly dissimilar), but only in the same way that my polite conversations with my eccentric housemate are not identical to me either.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Meeting 'Tim' only to find out he was in fact the cover identity for none other than STEVE IRWIN was astonishing! Also, Electric Sound of Jim is in fact all of the Wiggles and Trayce is Kylie Minogue.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The main people I wonder about are the ones who act all misanthropic on ILX (Alex in NYC, Jess, etc.) and whether they are really so, um, on edge all the time in real life.

Having opinions on a variety of subject does not necessarily equite with being "on edge all the time in real life".

I sure hope not. Then I wonder if they aren't really like that, why they feel the need to pretend to be like that. Is it a fear of revealing something personal?

If anything, I've revealed far too much personal information. In any case, given that I'm often prone to making the odd pointed statement, many see fit to reduce me to a cartoon character, despite the fact that not every post of mine is filled with bile.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

IRL I'm so consumed by what activities need to get completed that I don't come across as a needy, sensitive, insecure individual quite nearly as much as I do here online. I also find it hard for me to ask things of people IRL, so I don't really appear to really need or want anything at the volume it seems to be online. Aside from that, I haven't the slightest clue how I would differ from my persona here.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 12 June 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's funny, some of the people I *thought* were posting "in character", due to very pronounced quirks, turned out to be EXACTLY THE SAME in real life. It was a bit of an eye-opener to find out that people like Gareth, Suzy et al. really were very close to their posting styles, right down to quizical expressions accompanying long strings of questions and pauses for effect instead of line breaks.

I find myself very much slipping into a specific character that I use for posting to ILX. So much of my personality is formed in opposition or reaction to whatever people I'm around, and ILX does bring out certain characteristics which are not so pronounced in real life. (I play on it. Class angst brings up the trustafarian blueblood git in me, rampant sexism brings out the boy-chomping laddette in me, rational political discussion brings out the tin-hat in me etc. etc.) I'm actually a misanthrope, rather than a snob.

I'm probably actually *harder* to get along with in person. The internet frees me of crippling shyness and slight deafness which make F2F interactions a lot harder for me. I'm hard work, and I know it.

Do I get sucked in by other people's internet personnas? I don't know. if anything, I am more *likely* to think "Oh, that's just an assumed personna, they don't actually think/talk/believe that IRL, pshaw!"

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Saturday, 12 June 2004 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

99% of what I post is "in character". It's sometimes not even posted by my fertile mind, but by the minds of mates who might drop by and I'll go "you gotta see this forum", and show them Ned's web site and we'll have a laugh. I still find it hilarious that some threads I'll post on ILX will have lots of responses from people who really should know better as I'm quite clearly TAKING THE PISS. But trying telling that to fat people eh? It's easy being a character here.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 12 June 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

On topic though, I certainly don't make any conscious effort to post in persona on ILX, or anywhere on the interent (except occasionally at Stylus with regards to how I approach reviews stylistically). I thing I 'do' passion very well, but in real life I'm much more pragmatic/laidback. Saying this, I'm not sure how people perceive me on ILX, or if they perceive me at all.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 12 June 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

There couldn't be a worse time for me to post this but I definitely post in character. I'm much more mean and cruel IRL than I am on here, and I am also more kind and loving. ILX Bryan is a watered-down version of the real me and that's probably why people ignore me so much. So be it.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 12 June 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My ILX character is a level 14 mage who specializes in status and time-altering spells including Slow, Auto-antidote and Reflect. He is strong against undead creatures but weak against fire and elemental-based attacks. My character was born in the village of Thenoria, never knew his mother, and was orphaned at the age of 5 when his father Z S Senior, famed defender of the continent, mysteriously disappeared in the midst of a heroic battle against Ragnivion, leader of the encroaching Dread. My character invented 1/3 of the hottest moves in the Kama Sutra.

when i first moved to the midwest, sometimes i would get into weird interactions with people i didn't know at all, where they were being so nice and friendly that i literally did not understand what was happening. in 100% of these cases, the people turned out to be from minnesota.

On ILE I am as normal as I ever am.

On Ask A Drunk I have a long-established persona that comes from within me and expresses a part of me, just as my ILE self does, but is definitely not my standard issue persona. Not that AAD has enough traffic for me to indulge in this more than once a month, give or take.

WmC - threads where our paths cross (food threads, poll threads) tend to be those where I'm playing to the gallery a little more hamfistedly than I'd do were the discussion IRL (this is an understatement) - while it's often fun, it isn't something I'm overly keen to perpetuate into being 'how I am' - that said, 4 years' damage on ILX is almost irreversible, so I'll have to accept that this is how I'm viewed and attempt to dial it back despite the catcalls - also I could stand to be more courteous

is there an irl equivalent to changing your username without telling anyone? you'd have to legally change your name, render yourself unrecognizable through plastic surgery and a phony accent, and wait for your friends to guess your identity based upon exactly how often and how enthusiastically you brought up Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, despite your best efforts to avoid all mention of it. and then they'd diagnose you with dissociative identity disorder and ship you off to the madhouse.

I like it here.

eight years pass...

attended a funeral today, three kids (18-26ish) of the deceased all spoke. found it a bit much at times but all in all they were a credit to him i suppose

reminded (always want to say 'remound') me that the night of my mother's burial the aul fella handed me a poem to read (to myself, not perform or anything) about their travails and his feelings about events hitherto

theyd had a disaster of a marriage, id had a long few days and wasnt feeling hugely indulgent of the grosse pointe blank bully denouement at the time

i read it, criticised the scansion (which was v bad tbfttr) and suggested that hed want to revisit what he was trying to convey in two or three of the verses as hed let rhyming it get in the way of clarity imo

that is, imo, probably a notable crossover moment btwn ilx "character" and irl behaviour.

Nowadays with so many of y'all my friends on FB and thus able to see how I am on a day-to-day basis (i.e. my "real" self), I don't even have to answer this question.
