Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

chelsea to win the premiership; arsenal to win champions league, spurs to be relegated.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

There are also 9 days till the start of the Rymans League Division 1 South campaign, too. Who's up for a match?

(also, Cabs, I've come to agree with you almost entirely about the game you came to. Can I get you along to another one on the guarantee that the atmosphere will be a lot more positive?)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

quite possibly, yes

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

and why the hell are Liverpool "eyeing" Thomas Gravesen?????

My prediction - Chesterfield will be relegated :o(

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

chelsea to win the premiership; arsenal to win champions league, spurs to be relegated.

Highly likely, rather unlikely, very unlikely.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well spurs have the fake wenger now so => relegation likely.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't see Arsenal winning the Champs league (not sure who I can see winning it, especially after last year)

Spurs will escape relegation over easter, after struggling a lot (sorry Jonnie)

Of the promoted teams, I think maybe Norwich will stay up

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps Santini is this year's Egil Olsen?

Chris, cool. I'll bring it up again in a month or two when I've been to some matches and can vaguely predict what it's going to be like.

Chelsea will win the premiership. Everton could be the big side to go down, when Rooney does a cruciate and they can't use him and can't offload him. I hope not though as it'd make Mike sad.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

is it the Chazza Shield this Sunday then? blimey

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

In more general terms, I the middle section of the Premiership last season was pretty close, some of those teams have strengthened over the summer - Middlesbrough in particular have been a solid team with a dire strike force, they are totally reliant on Viduka and Hasselbaink producing the goods but we could be in a Cole/Yorke situation here.

A few of the teams who did well last season could see themselves doing an Everton or Blackburn this season. Charlton without Scott Parker and Fulham without Louis Saha in particular, although Rommedahl is a great signing and I'd like to see Carlton Cole do well.

I reckon Spurs still have a couple of signings in them - we need another decent centreback and a creative midfielder, but the two biggest sins of the Hoddle-Pleat era (lack of decent tacklers in midfield and playing Ledley King out of the back four despite shipping in goals by the ton) have hopefully been dealt with. I don't expect us to set the world on fire but hopefully it should be a decent season.

Top Three will be *very* tight indeed, but I reckon Manyoo with more striking options (and therefore less reliance on Van Nistelrooy) and Rio Ferdinand back will be vastly improved. Liam Miller could be another decent signing in central midfield as well, taking the pressure off Keane a bit. I think Arsenal will be weakened by the loss of Viera and so much depends on Chelsea's strikers being able to produce the goods - it could go any way of three.

One of either Everton or Man City is *definitely* going down, both looked pretty terrible towards the end of last season and the clubs seem to be in freefall.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i will bet money with anyone now that both teams will stay up and relegation will be less of a threat for both than last season. Rooney is surely going to perform better for his club, while he remains there. And I'm banking on the resurgence of Robbie Fowler to help City out.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, because it's too much of a hassle for me to look this up myself: what's the next rung up from the Rymans Div 1 South?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The wheels will fall of the Chelsea cart once it starts rolling. The players ego will not be quieted by their massive wage. Then the coach will be blamed.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really care what happens this season as long as it involves the mighty Ipswich Town being prmoted, and the Budgies flapping miserably in the top flight with the lowest points total ever.

so Murphy goes to Charlton for about 3 mil, and then Liverpool put oin a bid for (the very good) Xabi Alonso worth 10.7 - I'm slightly baffled by this.

In other news, Villa have a bid for Beattie turned down and no-one knows who is going to Real Madrid!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I say Fulham Ladies FC come back from the ignominy of fairweather owner Mohammed Al-Fayed's defunding to put together a top-flite pro-am team that can finally beat Charlton Athletic and Arsenal. Marie O'Brien, from Southampton, ought to be the tough right back they need to seal off the field. First game is on the 15th against Bristol Rovers - I feel sorry for Rovers, frankly; it will be like a cat cruelly tossing a mouse around. The real test will come a month later against Charlton, and the weird shock of seeing Katie Chapman lacing up her boots for the other side!!

I don't understand this Murphy situation at all - Spurs shoot themselves in the foot by telling him he's not guaranteed first team football, despite competing with the injury-prone and frankly disinterested Simon Davies, so he signs for Charlton where he's up against Rommedahl. It doesn't really make sense, does it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Also transfer of Stephen Carr to Newcastle means that Tarrico is still going to be a first-team player for Spurs next season. Argh! Told you, Pinefox.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

when do Liverpool name their team for this evening?..... is the boy Owen's name going to be on it? And what possible hitch could they have come across in contract negotiations, apart from him having second thoughts about signing?

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think he'll to Real, mostly because I don't believe Madrid can afford both him and Viera, and I know which one they need more.

Have Madrid signed any central defenders yet or are they going to go through another Champions League season with a dodgy defence and just hope for the best?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Murphy won't be up against Rommedhal, he's there to replace Jensen after he went to Fulham.

Checking on Liverpool squad now.....

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Real Madrid officials have reportedly told Spanish daily Marca that there is no truth in the rumours linking them with a move for Michael Owen.
The British press had claimed that Real were willing to pay Liverpool £10 million plus Fernando Morientes or Samuel Eto’o in return for the England internatioal who has just a year left on his Anfield contract.

Real coach Jose Antonio Camacho has made it clear that reinforcements in the defensive and midfield positions are his top priority.

Meanwhile, Real Sociedad are hoping that the Merengues come back with an improved bid for Xabi Alonso. The Basques are reported to have turned down a 12 million euro bid from Liverpool for the player.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't ever believe a word Real Madrid officials say, but it does seem an unlikely move. Why not another club though?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

A trade of £10m and one of them means Owen is worth about £25-30m! I can't see the logic in Owen moving to be honest.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

jel what are you talking about? the arrival of cisse was owens' deathknell, he sucks anymore and has to figure that his tiny talents will be energized with an injection of money and spanish sunshine

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just sorta of agreeing with you! Owen is good, but not £10m better than Morientes or Eto'o (which is what Real would be saying!)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

but real clearly doesn't care about money equivalency, they're overpaying just to make owen seem pricier/fancier to their fans: "see how many euros we spent on the wee man! we can take whoever we want!"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Xabi Alonso, please don't go to Madrid, they are a bunch of puffs.

Yes, Madrid have signed a defender. I can't remember his name. Walter Wegmüller, I think.

Owen didn't play. What would Bill Shankly say?

He would say, perhaps, 'get rid of the lad'.

Has anybody got that Match of the Day 3 DVD set - 60s, 70s, 80s?

I missed all the rangers shenanigans.

lawro pointed out yesterday that Owen has never successfully partnered another striker up front - a good point. Baros didn't look all that yesterday though, but I like Cisse, a lot.

Real Madrid signed Walter Samuel, who is an Argentinian.

Di Canio has slipped quietly from English football, like a thief in the night, he joins Lazio.

But, the fox in the box Franny Jeffers has joined Charlton, along with Danny murphy, la

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I just praise Teddy Sherringham? I've never seen a game where one man won so many flick ons. All to no avail as the recipient is Marlon Harewood.

I think Owen would be great in La Liga. Spurs have signed Naybet! For a snip.

Dykey G, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Owen to Barca? He seems to be off, as he didn't have a shirt on underneath his training top. And what was wrong with Gerrard's second goal?

I predict that this year's premiership will be won by the team who Liverpool take fewest points off.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

A free kick was given against cisse for his attempt at an overhead kick

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah. It's a man's game etc. They should have given it because it was potentially the worst atte,pt at an overhead kick ever, not because it posed a danger to a defender.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Naybet for £650,000?! Blimey! Now all we need is a right-back, a creative midfielder and someone to play on the right wing when Davies is injured.

*Sigh* This list isn't getting any shorter...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

they had just formed a clique over time I think, after all they had known each other for ages, Murphy's the only one not to have been at Liverpool since the age of 13 after all.
I think it's cruel but necessary, Diao looked almost useful last night, I don't know what the world's coming to. I like the look of dirty Warnock too. And Josemi looked good and solid, also finally - the defensive pairing of Hyppia and Carragher in Central defence = a good thing

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Samuel is a great signing for Real, I think. Owen less so - which of Ronaldo and Raul is he to displace from the first team? I can imagine Owen ending up on the bench an awful lot, which seems unlikely to do him any good. Also, Real still need to sort out Viera and maybe another good defender too, whereas they already have probably the best array of attacking talent any team has ever had - look at the attacking reserves they are allegedly talking of swapping for Owen!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just checked out the Spanish press and Benitez is denying Owen's daliance with Madrid, but then he would. Apparently, Liverpool is a London club. There was other 'interesting' stuff but I've forgotten it because I need some lunch.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

eat something and go back for more!! sheesh, where's Guillem when I need him?

Liverpool are a big cloob

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess the sale is imminent (why else would he sit out last night's game?).

I wonder if Barcelona are behind this though.

Pikey G, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Barca would seem a more sensible move for Owen, I reckon. Although if he'd played yesterday, that would have cup tied him for the whole Champions League season - effectively taking him off the market altogether. Maybe Liverpool were just keeping their options open.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I, for one, will miss Mikey O's penalties. As he did.

The consensus above seems to be that Everton are finally going to drop this season - I find it difficult to argue against (a 6-3 victory over Sheff Wed isn't fooling anyone.) Perhaps I should be happy no one's actually put us in last place.

My stupidly optimistic final table:

1 Chelsea
2 Arsenal
3 Man Utd
4 Newcastle
5 Aston Villa
6 Liverpool
7 Charlton
8 Fulham
9 Tottenham
10 Southampton
11 Bolton
12 Everton
13 Middlesborough
14 Birmingham
15 Norwich
16 Man City
17 Crystal Palace
18 Blackburn
19 Portsmouth
20 West Brom

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I share your optimism somewhat - I am going for the first 'three up three straight back down again' in ages (tho I usually predict this most seasons anyway)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Benitez says he just thinks Baros is the better player, is what he says. I suspect this is residual Madrid baiting, so that must be where he's going.

I am beginning to like Benitez, he looks like a good laugh.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

He looks pretty evil on the sidelines, a good thing.

My only sadness of Murphy leaving is that he is the consumate scourge of Manyoo

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike, as soon as I saw the word "optimism" I knew it was you.

Do you really think Portsmouth will go down? I'd say they'll be 13th or 14th, out of danger by February.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Not much new really, except they say Liverpool 'offered' Owen to Madrid, and there is no mention of Morientes. Also the usual gubbins about Owen selling more Madrid shirts in the global marketplace, blah blah.

I had beans on toast.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

No, more like I want them to go down. They get on my wick. Blackburn too - they can sod right off. Actually, I forgot to relegate Boro; I really hate them. Similarly I'd like Liverpool to go three months without a home win like in 02-03 and slip out of UEFA contention. And Arsenal to blow a big lead.

It's not all schadenfraude though - I'd like to see Newcastle and Man City win the domestic cups, if only for the missus. EFC to battle to 12th with some actual goals, y'know? 66 for and 67 against, something like that.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Do Everton actually have any players left to lose?

Then again, we're not exactly sitting pretty. Beating Chievo 3-1 is nice, but our off-season signings aren't exactly earth-shattering, and the chairman deciding to name a price for Beattie... Oh dear. This could all be going very wrong. I still trust the Lugged One. But apparently no-one else does.

Large Mikey G, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Evening Standard is claiming that Spurs are offering Southampton Fredi Kanoute plus cash for James Beattie. I can't work out whether or not I think this is a good idea. The same piece is also claiming a WHL approach for Owen Hargreaves which sounds a bit more fanciful.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that Alex Bellos' book?

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the fact that we feel the need to sell him at all... he had a bit of a dodgy season last year and he was still second or third highest scoring Englishman in the league. And we didn't exactly get many goals from anyone else (though Phillips was really starting to come good towards the end). We need some good, solid first-team players, cos though we've got a load of promising young types (from what I saw of Folly, he's gonna be something brilliant), we do need some people that have got it together already. Which isn't really Peter Crouch, to be brutally honest.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always hearted Phillips, and can't stand Keegan for not playing him in E2000.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose there's the flipside to the argument - we have got a decent bit of money, and Luggy's not felt the need to spend much of it, and that which he has spent hasn't gone on name players. Which suggests that he either has a plan or is a bit dim.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm also a fan of Phillips. Kanoute too, though offside confuses him.

Yes, it was the Alex Bellos book (3 for 2 in Waterstones). Have you read it Dave?

Mikey Gee, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but it comes highly recommended; my mate read it whilst spending a month in Brazil (during the last WC, no less) and found it fascinating and true.

it's very good btw, especially the chapter on the Amazonian championships

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Everton: Radzinski's gone, which upsets me greatly, Chadwick's loan last season was made permanent, Unsworth and Jeffers off too. Gravesen agreed to see out his contract but will leave on a free in 12 months, we'll get a maximum of one more season out of Wayne. I'm probably forgetting a couple. We've signed Cahill and Bent, which is all right I suppose.

Thankfully Kevin Campbell appears to be fit again, but that's in a relative sense. He is 49 years old.

The new kit sponsors are Chang Beer. I bet Michael's never touched the stuff.

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

You've got Everton in 12th and 16th there Chris, I assume one of them is Pompey.

There's no way Palace are staying up, but I reckon Norwich might. David Bentley could prove a good signing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

One of Chris's picks is an EFC Legends team - replacing Pompey by Royle decree - featuring Dixie, the Golden Vision, Latch, Inchy and the Angel Gabriel. I think 12th is a pretty good showing for a partially deceased/infirm team of Blues.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Pro-Madrid 'Marca' says that Owen has 'committed himself verbally' to Real Madrid when his contract ends, but the operation is still open, with Liverpool wanting ten million euro more than Madrid are willing to pay.

It's exciting, isn't it?

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso is 'packing his case'. Obviously someone works in his house and saw him yesterday. Turns out this is partly to cover the outstanding debt for Westerveld. Blooming heck.

Speaking of Latch, as I so often do, sometimes in my sleep - I was watching a bit of my grebt eBay win Match Of The Day: Seven Goal Thrillers video last night and there he was, in his Brum days, scoring a cracker to put B'ham C 3-1 up at Anfield in late '72. The Reds came back, of course, Toshack scoring the winner as the rain lashed down.

It was funny/sad that Fat Bob had no difficulty beating Clemence and Grobbelaar at Anfield when playing for Birmingham or Swansea, but failed to ever get on the score sheet in a Merseyside derby in seven seasons. This is the void, and I'm looking into it.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 12 August 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

My work here is therefore not yet done.

I'd like to invite you all round to watch my Seven Goal Thrillers video but only if you can answer the following questions about redheaded footballers featured in it:

(i) Who is the teenage Burnley keeper beaten seven times on his debut vs a Bowles-inspired QPR?
(ii) Who toe-pokes EFC into an early lead en route to a 5-2 Cup smashing of Wrexham?
(iii) Which fiery-haired Liverpool midfielder smacks home the best goal of a 5-2 home win over Ipswich?

No dates otherwise it's too easy.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 August 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Is iii David Fairclough?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hargreaves to White Hart Lane would make me a happy boy. We wait years for proper central midfielders and then three turn up at once.

But to be fair Tottenham are being linked with every player in Europe at the moment. Including Figo. I'm sure journalists just make these Spurs stories up so everyone can have a good laugh when we fail to sign them.

Cabbage bags the bonus: 5-3 (think Dalglish and Lee got the others - the late goals that actually won the game), Feb '80. EFC lost 0-4 at home to Ipswich the same day. People were throwing cushions from the Main Stand, Brian Kidd (injured, on bench) came on to retrieve them. Gwladys Street End were chanting "We want five". Character building.

I'm also enjoying Norwich's very agreable winless run (Only 23 more days and it will be the longest Premiership sequence without a win!)

I said:

SPL: Celtic.

2nd Division: Morton
3rd Division: Gretna.

I'm standing by my SPL and 3rd Division predictions. My overestimation of Ross County may have been someone biased from reading pre-season blurb in Highland newspapers. I should have said Clyde out of loyalty to the mister, but they lost their manager, sold all their good players and were favourites for relegation. Good on them, but I think it'll be Falkirk's year now. I remain oblivious to what's going on in the second division.
