CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

And it's Alan's birthday party, sort of!

Birthday Gnome, Friday, 13 August 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Marvellous. Crumbs, isn't there a Rocktor C FAP the Tuesday that week as well? Mmm mentalist socialising.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, it's not on the calendar...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I go?

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

oh - it's on a thursday :-(

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Take Friday off!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Steve and Anna DJing back to back will be the most rocking thing ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I am supposed to have Fridays off these days, though that has gone by the wayside lately grr. So I *might* be able to come woo.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr C-proposed FAP. Had to search for 'glasshouse billiards'.

FAP Tuesday Aug 24th

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Not exactly "special guests," is it?

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 13 August 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh stick you

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Now, Daphne and Celeste - that's what I call SPECIAL GUESTS!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 13 August 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's Special DJ Guests.

They're special coz they're not bald. And they smile. And they don't play white label German trance.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah well the principle holds. Special DJ Guests should mean proper DJs, like Tim Westwood or Richard Allinson.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 13 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

No Whispering Bob?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard Allinson? he's a DJ with nowt taken out!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Get Ken Bruce, he can't be that expensive. You could have a live Freaky Trigger POPMASTER quiz!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 13 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I would do an ILM Poll winners set but...we hear most of them at Club FT often anyway...so no...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll pay two quid for a special anti-request for no c#nting Scissor Sisters...

Big & Rich, Friday, 13 August 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's gonna take a lot more than £2 to stop me playing 'Tits On The Radio'

Also MC, what with your impending appearance on Resonance, I'm interpreting this as a desperate ploy to bag yourself a slot at a future Club FT, what with being a PROPER DJ and everything...what would you play?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i like white label german trance. please bring some ok thx bye.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to see people on the dancefloor for this:

The Knife 'Heartbeats'

toby (tsg20), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

hello i've missed that, sounds like good downloadin'

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

is rob bringing the mcClusky album??

ken c (ken c), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Steve and Anna DJing back to back will be the most rocking thing ever.

-- Matt DC

Actually I plan to DJ from Steve's shoulders. (Dad joke)

Heartbeats is mine Manion. You can mix properly and aren't scared of EQs, so please let me keep the tune. Please?

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

dont forget the acidhouse fap tonite at Bang Face

david acid (gareth), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

temp-ta-shun. now i inhabit london i have to go out in it. i guess.

ENRG (Enrique), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on Enrique, I'll even play a record for you...

a lot of work went in to make:

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

who is this Big Rich guy, does he post?

ENRG (Enrique), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

He saves horses by riding cow boys.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the small text at the bottom = "Big&Rich are not appearing as such, nor do they endorse FreakyTrigger, but we will be playing their records"

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

that Knife tune is great, remix even better! don't worry Anna i'm more concerned about someone else playing Dizzee's 'Dream' before i get the chance (MINE YOU BSTARDS)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The more I hear about your planned setlists, the more convinced I am that I should go to the Drones club in Stoke Newington instead. :-/

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

A DJ friend of mine, handle of 'Fat Sam', warms up for Westwood occasionally. apparently Timmy is very protective about who gets to play 'Milkshake' etc. Is this normal DJ practice?

ENRG (Enrique), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Planned setlists is my schtick. IT'S A PERFORMANCE ;)

Okay since I am playing this one I am actually more motivated to actually leave flyers for it around places in Old Street and Islington...I can print out b&w ones here

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah a club called 'Drones'!!!! Lor'. Evidence that there are more Evelyn Waugh fans than anarchsists in today's Stokey Newky.

ENRG (Enrique), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The only reason I get protective of certain tracks is because I always have ideas I want to try and do with them - segues, mashings etc. that other people are unlikely to be thinking of themselves - but at the end of the day I'm not gonna storm off in a huff because I can't play what I want, esp. as I am merely a guest.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Grrrr. It's a dronerock club, natch.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

in Stoke Newington? blimey

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

all you other djs face gonna be mashups...

ENRG (Enrique), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the Polite Brigade nowadays, like.

postie crossie

MikeyG (MikeyG), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

that was a complete lie about not storming off in a huff btw

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Drones was a Wodehouse ref!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the only drone i've heard at Club FT is when Cabbage plays Weatherall mix of 'Soon'

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

there were a load of drones on the dance floor at the last FT (aka zombies)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Cabbage plays the Weatherall mix of "Soon"?

I always knew he was a solid citizen.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the Weatherall mix of "Soon"?

is the most overrated thing ever touched by either artist. meh.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

well obviously without the Jungle Brothers 'Because I Got It Like That' running over the top of it it is nothing...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the only time I've ever felt indie affront is when I heard the Here we go!s in Wetherall's mix of 'Soon'.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Drones was a Wodehouse ref!
-- roxymuzak (emilysu...), August 13th, 2004

could be: it's him or Waugh. one way or another, it's not very Angry.

ENRG (Enrique), Saturday, 14 August 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

will be vacationing in London during that time..if I wuz to show up , would someone talk to me, or would I be forced to scribble "JOE STRUMMER IS FOR THE KIDS!!" on the walls in an isolated corner somewhere?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 14 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure you'll be welcomed and talked to, Daniel.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 August 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Daniel, I totally echo what Martin said. Club FT is always great and everyone's very friendly and welcoming. I would so like to go myself but I've just remembered that I have my performance appraisal on Friday so can't take the day off *sigh*.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 15 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Me and Vic will be trying Glasgow the next day (on the train too) so we'll be in full effect

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 15 August 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Also MC, what with your impending appearance on Resonance, I'm interpreting this as a desperate ploy to bag yourself a slot at a future Club FT, what with being a PROPER DJ and everything...what would you play?

You interpreted me wrongly. Not at all interested in DJing at Club FT or Club anything. At least not unless I'm paid a substantial amount of money to do so.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello. Here is £10,000. If I pay you this, will you leave ILX forever?

Please?

'kay thanks, bye.

A Substantial Amount Of Money, Monday, 16 August 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I see no £10,000.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, what the fuck is dronerock? Is it the sort of thing I liked when I was 19?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh it's like shoegaze but more fuzzy

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Dronerock is like shoegazer, but without a tune. Hah hah.

I have decided that I'm not going to The Drones Club because I went to see the band that I wanted to see, and all the *spacerock* and *drone* have gone out of them since their recent lineup change. I was so disappointed. I was expecting Can or Neu or something, and I got this tedious hippie-dippie jam band.

So I guess I'm going for the cheese. Even though I really liked the name of The Drones Club, it cracks me up. I don't even think it's intentional. I don't think this lot know anything about Woodhouse or Waugh.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

kate, do you like the boredoms?

david acid (gareth), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

did shoegaze come from dronerock or did dronerock come from shoegaze?

(he asks whilst listening to slowdive... that said, it's the slowdive 'in-mind' remixes by Bandulu and Reload which were pretty much a (personal?) epoch themselves)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Dronerock came first, methinks. Because Dronerock has been going since the 60s, with LaMonte Young and all that, while Shoegaze was definitely a late 80s/early 90s phenomenon.

(She says, listening to The Velvet Underground & Nico)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I was listening to the VU & Nico yesterday. Does this mean I'm a drone clone? A droner? What do you call yourselves?

As for listening to Slowdive, can I point you towards the indie amnesty? (Post cross thing).

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just had a ten minute discussion about the difference between a VU meter and a PPM meter. I prefer "soundhead" thank you.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(When Alsihad builds in a DDB meter, I will be a happy girl indeed!)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

> Dronerock came first, methinks

i realised the second part of that question was braindead as soon as i posted it, soz. i was more interested in possible links between the two and anything that people identified as the starting point, the mutation.

maybe this belongs on ilm...

koogs (koogs), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

But I am enjoying this derailment!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(I have just realised that the PPM meter measures DdBB's so I am a happy girl indeed!)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

and as for the indie amnestry i'd be more inclined to offload all those fiedlmice records i will never listen to again if the proceeds weren't going to encourage people to play football 8)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

especally when as we can see on this thread encouraging people to play football is pretty much a lost cause.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even know what the Indie Amnesty is, but if it encourages football playing, then I am categorically AGAINST it.

Don't these kids know that they should stay in and play with computers and musical instruments and recording equipment instead? Much healthier!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The more pessimistic end of the dronerock spectrum (heh heh) diversified into groanrock.

Football is antithesis of the Field Mice.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

for dronerock use ilm archives:

http://ilx.p3r.net/newanswers.php?board=2

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

> for dronerock use ilm archives

but, much as i love my EAR t-shirt, dronerock tends to bore me 8) and i'm more interested in how (if) it begat shoegaze and what people think was the cusp.

also, the last couple of shoegaze threads i've read have just met with 'we've done this before...'

koogs (koogs), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I searched for "roots of shoegaze" and found only one relevant thread - it was about the roots of various different genres, and placed the blame on the JAMC.

Me, I far prefer threads about the roots and progression and intersection of genres, rather than threads where we just list endless lists of bands that might or might not represent the genre. But that's just me...

Needless to say, there will likely be no shoegaze or dronerock at Club FT, much to its detriment. :-(

Charlie 4, when are you going to start that shoegazer club?

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(Ha ha, I just searched both dronerock and dronepop on ILM, and every single result pulled up one of my posts. Am I predictable or what?)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, I played Pearl at my first Club FT appearance

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Andy, you can offload you Field Mice records into my waiting arms. Dude! (or I can buy them on ebay through the proper indie amnesty route) Besides, that would be more of a twee amnesty.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha, saturday guardian guide "embarassing records" stuart murdoch = talulah gosh by talulah gosh. WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

> placed the blame on the JAMC

which nicely links my Slowdive with your VU listening which is where we came in 8)

sadly, Liz, the filedmice stuff won't be offloaded anytime soon as it's part of the bigger Sarah collection which will remain intact. if there's anything you don't have that you like to hear though, just let me know... (there are about 6 Sarah tracks that didn't fit onto the 2 cd retrospective and another half a dozen non-Sarah things out there too. er, i'd point you at the discography but i took it down...)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"filedmice" :)

Is the Sarah collection arranged chronologically or by artist?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have 40 odd Sarah singles. They are in my parents loft. Even my parents are ashamed.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm disgusted Stuart is embarrassed by "Talulah Gosh". I am playing that next time I'm invited to DJ at Club FT (i.e. never after that confession)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm embarrassed that you're disgusted.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Whuh?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You're confused that I'm embarrassed.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm bemused that you appear to be talking with no purpose.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

> Is the Sarah collection arranged chronologically or by artist?

numerically 8)

actually, all the cds are just shoved in a box on their own somewhere (under the table), the 7"s are arranged numerically in a 7" box (under the computer) and the 10s and 12s are just jumbled with everything else. fanzines & press cuttings in a ziplok bag same box as the cds.

apart from sarah 50 ('Saropoly') and sarah 90something (the second ivy single, er, Sarah 92) which, for some reason are perched on top of the pile on top of the scanner.

(a quick look for fliedlice singles on ebay seems to suggest they can be picked up relatively cheaply. i guess the double cd comp has helped plus the fact that they were always(?) pressed in larger quantities than other sarah releases)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Owning Sarah records is a bit like hiving Nazi memorabilia. Perhaps more embarassing?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i was only following orders.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

what about Death in June records?

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool! What you got?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

is it embarassing to own nazi memorabilia?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Only if you wear it to Tesco.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Just to clarify, I will NOT be playing ANY of the following at Club FT:

Shoegazer
Songs released on Sarah
Dronerock
Any combination of the above

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, you're the one with Death in June records ;o)

x-post to MG

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

let us pray 'tisn't thus.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Arc Light by Loop? Is that dronerock? I reckons it to be so.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, is this an indie disco or not?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Shoegazer
Songs released on Sarah
Dronerock
Any combination of the above

-- the neurotic awakening of s (stevem7...), August 16th, 2004.

Well indeed, why bother listening to the demands of the public? It's so much easier just to play the same 40 records that always get played at Club FT, innit?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"the public"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello you're cracking me up, seriously...

It's a sockgazing night (shoegazing for sandal wearers).

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but they're all just pretending to be happy, aren't they?

Just saving you the bother of posting a response.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll tell you what's easy - standing there putting CDs in players and pressing play for 40 mins - omg lol it's so simple a child could do it!

still my reading of recent CLub FTs has been that the clientele would rather dance to Kelis, Britney and the Scissor Sisters as opposed to all the worthy but relatively obscure INDIE classics of yesterdecade. Tcha, kids eh?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Arc Light by Loop is indeed droneroX0r.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Clientele should visit Club FT one of these days.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure Anna will be only too delighted to oblige you there Bolton...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

will you guys play Aqua - Dr Jones?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been to about three FT nights. I can remember one record and that was by non-dronerocky Charlene (and it was ace and I think played by Mark).

Great ceiling, if only Michaelangelo had been Irish.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Thus is the difference between Club FT and Heart 106.2 FM eradicated, if indeed there ever were any.

Oi! Boring Club FT! Play some Chapterhouse! A little Slowdive! A touch of Cranes! A sting of Bleach! A blast of The Perfect Disaster! (especially side two of Up, that'll really get 'em all moving)

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY WELCOME INDIE INPUT!

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Also the whole point of having EXCITING SPECIAL GUESTS (hey it's not arrogance, that's what it sez on the flyer guv) is that it's THEIR set populated largely by THEIR choices - you trust the DJ to satisfy the punters to a respectable level by playing popular tracks but you also expect them to play some of their own favourites/stuff they think will work which will hopefully still appeal to the crowd and in this case get them dancing...a happy medium I always try and reach when I play, anywhere...

there was more dancing at the last Club FT than I'd seen for ages, if not ever - the credit there going to both the regular DJs, the guest DJs and - yes - the clientele...but really I think it was due to the tunes being played, of which how many were dronegaze anthems I'm not sure...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah and Guest DJs don't do requests, only the Regular ones...hey I don't make these rules up as I see fit kthnxbye

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's worth going for the toilets. The music is the noise going on in the other room while you do your tinkles.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

no no, come for the happy hour cocktails, stay for the New Fast Automatic Daffs!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I can do that in my own bathroom. To a soundtrack of music that I like.

WELL WHY DON'T YOU JUST FUCKIN GO AND DO THAT THEN YOU SAD OLD BASTARD?

- - the entire population of ILx (entirep...), August 16th, 2004.

Again, just saving you the trouble.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The cocktail thing would be OK if there were more than two barstaff. Otherwise you're stood there for hours while some geek has a Mexian Squelching Shaft Oiler or whatever.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The toilets are very nice, as are the glowing obelisks on the pulpit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

this is either marcello having us all figured out or a worrying case of schizophrenia, or both.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello, I've never been to your toilet, but does it have a blue glass splashback?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be nice if there was some different music played alongside the clubft standards

david acid (gareth), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i might play something sarah. steve if you could do a mash up of a 14 Iced Bears track with Alcazar TITWWLI or something like that. THANKS

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost to Mikey G):

Curiously enough, yes it does.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why everyone keeps praising the toilets so much - they're total meh - I like proper urinals not steenking troughs.

Different music = ?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

funnily enough (or not) i HAVE been fiddling with Alcazar, Alan...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I just wonder if this is his way of giving it free advertising or something. I mean, he does this every month.

OK, so do I. But then again, some months I actually *do* show up and dance to Flock of Seagulls or whatever.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

You admit to not knowing any different music, then.

Get Westwood in to do Club FT but with an indie playlist.

"THE FIELD MICE! THAT'S THE WAY IT'S GOING DOWWWNNNN! THAT BAILTER SPACE JOINT IS CRRRRAZY!!" Etc.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder what the ladies are like? That's where I'm going next time. For comparison's sake and not because of my 'problems'.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

then again i might just stick the Ladytron mix album on and let it play through.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it was a geniune request for aqua upthread btw.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Does that mean there are no ladies at Club FT? Ugh! All blokes! Like the Royal Vauxhall Tavern! Except smelly!

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought type 'ladies' and wait until someone does the old ladies / ladies toilet confusion thing. Then shout 'yip' and check the cricket.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the score?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the ladies room is pretty unexciting, really. kinda goth iron detailing on heavy wood doors. maybe you guys should run tours of the men's room, since you all rave about how wonderful it is.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we should sneak in there early before the night starts, and check it out or something.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

if any ladies want to see the boys toilets i'd be happy to erm... give you girls a tour.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Eurodrone

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

There were more girls at the last CLub FT than ever before - pretty much a 50/50 ratio...tho Tom inviting his workmates was a factor

the Ladytron comp is great but only half of it works on the dancefloor, and only half of that is actually fun pop...not that fun pop forms the entire remit of Club FT (tho it's not my club so only the pwners can testify) or Ladytron's tastes...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, Eurodrone is like Kraftwerk or Neu! or something.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post... MORE gurlz? Oh no! The whole point of going to this is cause I mistakenly believe there will be BOYS there. Maybe I should go to The Drones instead because at dronerock shows, the gender ratio is always 11 guys to every girl.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve play some Kraftwerk plz ok thx bye.

There was pretty much exact gender parity at the last Club FT, especially when you consider that Thursday night is more conducive to getting random members of the public as well (which was more or less the entire dancefloor by the time I left last time).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

kate, about half of the girls there were nice 'strangers', including a load of tom's friends, a load of my friends, and i think actually random strangers that were lured from the rooftop bar area.

but, yeah, it was one of the girliest ilx events i've been to (other than the girl-specific ones, obv)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

You should definitely go to the Drones. The only "boys" at Club FT are the same "boys" who are always there.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you really think Tom and Colette's girlfriends will come back after last time? There'll be more Y chromosomes than an inbred welsh hamlet.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in the Newington yesterday. Where is this droneclub?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the girls sent me a text last week saying something like 'hey, is there an internet party tonight?!', so i think she had fun.

yeah, people should bring more strange boys. kate, can't you like round up a load of them in stoke newington and just bus them into club FT?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be bringing people from work!

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The Drones is at the Eye, I believe.

Colette, if I had the power to round up DDB's and make them go places, don't you think I would be escorting them straight to my flat, rather than taking them to some dodgy chartpop dance night?

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"some dodgy chartpop dance night?"

Thanks Kate I couldn't have put it better myself!

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

weren't you thinking about making some sort of DDB net, or something, for us to use at glastonbury? maybe you could try that!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The only Club FT I ever attended wasn't all that heavy on chartpop, I remember Alice Cooper and NY Dolls, mostly. The Big & Rich, Alcazar, Lord Buckingham's XI and Dr.Alban inclusions on that there leaflet don't strike me as very run-of-the-mill chartpop, either.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The naysayers are talking nonsense incidentally, every guest DJ has played a completely different set from the others as far as I can remember.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello, what music would you suggest for this FT night? Would you start off with some Kettering funk?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Kettering funk? I am intrigued. Tell me more.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a band from Kettering called Starfish who did a kind of funky thing in the late eighties. They were briefly signed by Island who promptly dropped them without releasing a record. One of them left to join See See Rider and another is a professional snooker player, although his name escapes me.

Perhaps 'scene' is too strong a term, but there were a couple of other bands from nearby that played the same kind of music (The Chosen Ones?) and iirc there was a Kettering 'festival' one year.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

See that's the sort of thing I'm interested in hearing - stuff I don't already know about.

I realise that this runs contrary to the populist bent of Club FT.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 August 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

FT is all about having a good time, I think. The music isn't serious and the dancing is hilarious.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I realise that this runs contrary to the populist bent of Club FT.

you realise this yet you feel compelled to continue to question the logic of the Club FT concept (or outcome at least - yes it may be a little cliquey but that's going to be hard to avoid in a venue that small with a following as big as Club FT's based on ILX affiliation), despite not having attended recently (if ever). Curiouser.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

FT is like any other club in that it has to primarily cater for the dancefloor. Go petition your MP if you want that to change.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The MCC singularly fails to cater for the dancefloor.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Petition The Lord with prayer.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh I dunno, I've heard that John Major loves to grind his way round the dancefloor to a bit of Sean Paul at the annual fur and feather ball.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I would say that advertising EXCITING SPECIAL GUESTS when they are neither exciting nor special constitutes false advertising.

The fact that Club FT's playlist is indistinguishable from any provincial Saturday night disco wouldn't in itself bother me, but it's the hugely irritating subtext of "we understand pop better than anyone else, i.e. those filthy plebs/chavs who actually consume the stuff" which I find bothersome. By all means play chartpop and have a good time - it's the cultural pretensions which I find tiresome.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello, if you've never been, how do you know what music is being played and what the attitude is? (I know I know, don't give in to the troll, but you know, I can still call out tw@ttishness)

you just lock yrself in yr bathroom (hopefully there's no computer link in there), admire your blue splashback and listen to some random skronking. I think we'd all be happier.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

In the context of Club FT they're very special and exciting - one of them can actually mix I'm told!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretentious and presumptuous though. You should just say "guest DJs" and have done with it.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

you're reaching now Marcello, really reaching.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only reaching for the best, as the Exciters did on their Ian Levine-produced #31 hit single of October 1975!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Like most of us here, I like a huge range of music, from 'chartpop' to the hopelessly obscure. When I go out, do I want to hear really obtuse, strange music I've never heard before? Nope - I enjoy that at home in my own time, unless I'm attending a unique event with a specific musical focus I want to learn more about. For a night out with friends, this so-called 'chartpop/alternative-canon-fodder' suits me just fine (Club FT casts a wider net than this BTW).

A similar thing applies if I'm DJing. I've spun records in a range of venues big and small, and the rule is universal - play music that people want to dance to. This will differ from place to place, but continuous obscure stuff will simply not be appreciated. It's all about keeping the ladies on the dancefloor, and Kettering funk will most likely not do this (unless maybe you are in Kettering, and the night was billed as funk music). You want to play obscure stuff and 'educate' people? Get a college radio show.

Club FT is a mix of music for a mix of people, and I don't think there are any cultural pretentions active. We're usually too drunk to care.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

a lesson in pop weas learned by yrs truly at student nights when, curiously, the dj playing steps had EVERYONE on his floor and i had NO-ONE on mine. but hey at least i wasn't pandering to the chav-hating FASCISTS who like listening to danceable chart-pop, right kids?

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

http://uk.geocities.com/turnipfish1/tryit.txt

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see why you can't have both chartpop and "obtuse, strange music." If a DJ's any good he can get away with both.

The trick is not to play music that people want to dance to, but to play music to which you want people to dance.

And as for "keeping the ladies on the dancefloor" - that's a bit sexualist, innit?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

And I speak as a DJ who managed to get 500 pissed NHS staff dancing to Peter Brotzmann at Xmas!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

'listen to some random skronking'

This is the point in the thread where I gotta correct Porkypie: there may be shronking but it's not random dude! don't listen to it but no need to make assumptions abt what it sounds like...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

play music to which you want people to dance
If this is your policy then I would rather not go where you are DJing. Sounds too "I know better than you musical plebs" to me. A good DJ should respect at least SOME of the wishes of the attending patrons.

However I will agree that the key to good DJing is to mix up music that people KNOW with music that they don't. Although the latter should be approached with caution, and always in context.

An aside: For the purposes of this thread, I am talking about venues that are promoting a mix of styles - chart stuff/rock/indie/whatever. I fully admit the contrary applies when DJing at a 'club'/rave - I did that extensively for years and all I played then was unknown house and techno that most people on the dancefloor didn't know. In this circumstance, people don't care who the artists are or if they can identify the track - if you can keep the beat going and your selection is good, it's OK. But then people at these things are usually pretty mashed and it's not about the SONGS played it's about the style. Similar case (not necessarily the mashed bit though) for other venues with a specific music night (afro-funk, latin, salsa-funk-jazz-dub or whatever). I would not expect to know the songs/artists in that environment either, but as I said upthread, attending this would be a specific choice I would make. If I wanted to get drunk and dance with friends, I would probably not make this choice.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

random = Bailey or whoever else makes that awful racket (I lasted ten minutes of Bailey at AtP so I heard more than enough for my liking) I'm sure there is some sort of method to their madness (don't tell me, it's maths isn't it?)

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, but, on the other hand, if you are going to get guests in, of any kind, are you not wanting them for that reason, the things they want to play? the whole reason for booking a dj, is for the thing that they will bring, the thing that differentiates them.

i think ed and julio might be good choices, alongside more pop oriented guests

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

However I will agree that the key to good DJing is to mix up music that people KNOW with music that they don't. Although the latter should be approached with caution, and always in context.

I segued Brotzmann out of DJ Otzi. In previous years I mixed in tracks from Bailey's drum & bass album and they went down a storm.

I guess it works for me because I generally know my audiences, and my audiences know me (i.e. what to expect from me), so to both parties it turns out to be the most natural thing to cut from, say, M People's "Renaissance" to Atari Teenage Riot's "Sick To Death," or from the Mavericks' "Dance The Night Away" to Aphex's "Come To Daddy." It can be done!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i'm placing my vote w/ stevem and anna; dunno if i'll actually make it, but it's there.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I am genuinely excited at seeing Anna and Steve DJ. They are also two of the most universally liked ILXors (a point which I'm sure means less than nothing to someone who actually hates all ILXors) and to me at least that adds an extra dimension of joy to my FT-attending experience.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough chaps, some people prefer to be sheep.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea that either Steve or Anna will play a generic Club FT set doesn't wash with me at all.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't hate all ILxors. Some ILxors I love. But those I love I think of as friends first and ILxors second.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah yeah matt thunderbirds are go toxic some girls the show comfortably numb babycakes work it party hard am i right or am i right?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I've slept with most people on ILX and overall I would rate them 6.5/10.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

the other point Marcello is that this isn't a private party, random punters come in off the street and if we scare them away the bar manager won't be happy and then we won't get asked back.

also, just fuck off.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh Marcello, you're a big eclectic wolf then are you?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Big eclectic wolf." I like that one.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"also, just fuck off."

make your mind up! which is it gonna be?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

And I speak as a DJ who managed to get 500 pissed NHS staff dancing to Peter Brotzmann at Xmas!

hmm, given the choice, you fucking off i suppose...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth I agree with you about 'guests'. You expect something unique from them. I would like to hear Julio and Ed play records sometime, and I would expect to hear things I don't know and would probably like. That said, even guests should understand the crowd. Personally speaking, I don't respect DJs who show up and play a completely pre-determined playlist. May as well stick on one of their mix CDs. My excitement comes when a DJ is clearly responding to/feeding off of the crowd (again I drift towards 'club/dance' music here)

Haha ken c OTM

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, i shall try and pop in for a while, although i will be heading off to norway the next day. all the same, it might be a good idea not to tell potential people to fuck off though, all the same. surely, the place should aim to be welcome to all?

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

are we running a book to see if Marcello actually bothers to turn up and see if he is right or wrong? long odds on the reclusive skronkmeister being seen for more than ten minutes I have to say.

also of the eight tracks mentioned there, I've heard four at FT

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

People who have never been to a Floppy Trigger night will probably have a mind's eye picture of a big dancefloor and a DJ cult. The heaving mass of bodies responsing to smooth mixing and the organic feel of the tracks.

The reality is a night out with some music in the background. Social and all that, like. Plus the toilets.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think a pissed wedding or student party would be too bothered about any cultural signifiers. They just want to have a good time and dance/do routines to songs they know. What they don't want is what killed the club scene: interchangeable, miserable-faced, bald "DJs" who never smile, never acknowledge their audience and bore them to death with their impeccably hip selection of German trance white labels. If DJs don't like having to play "Dancing Queen" or "I Will Survive" for the gazillionth time then they shouldn't do mainstream gigs.

-- Marcello Carlin (marcellocarli...), August 13th, 2004.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps, rob. i did realise, at the last one, that i didn't like the idea of djing there as much as i had thought i might, as the things i am enjoying at the moment, perhaps not suited (although, possibly earlier).

chris, i am not sure being unwelcoming on this thread does anyone any favours? i'm not sure i like the idea of people trying to close the door on other peoples attendance. an online spat at work is one thing, if it helps pass the time, but those things should surely be left at the door when out?

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That said, even guests should understand the crowd.

Translation: even guests should be forced to play Britney, Kelis and Scissor Sisters because it's OUR GAFF, OUR RULES, and WE HATE PEOPLE WHO AREN'T US and PEOPLE WHO AREN'T US CAN JUST FUCK OFF AND START THEIR OWN FACKIN CLUBS INNIT!

I mean, who needs professionals with their playlists when we can just be content with our amateur mates who'll always play what WE want?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

HE'S BEHIND YOU!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(I do realise there is bugger all point in highlighting Marcello's hypocrisies as he essentially defines his standpoint in relation to whoever he's having the usual attention-seeking grandstanding dindong with at the time, purely for the sake of being contradictory, but fuck it)

At the end of the last Club FT there was a full dancefloor and it contained no ilxors whatsoever, incidentally.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

How would you know unless you were there, in which case the statement "it contained no ilxors whatsoever" would be inaccurate as there would have been at least one ilxor there?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in the room, not on the dancefloor. Have you been to the Chapel Bar?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys should have me as a guest DJ next month for an eclectic mix of slipknot, belle and sebastian, destiny's child and black sabbath. I'll have the crowd moshing and picking daisies and grinding and eating chickens head off! yeah! (and aqua too)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I DJed as a guest last time (Marcello would have hated my set, as it was really good) and no-one told me remotely what to play! Idiot.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't being unwelcoming Gareth, I'd love to see Marcello at Club FT, and you too as I barely got a chance to speak to you last time.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark's set was like a trip to paradise in a taxi full of skinheads

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

and of course he was driving ;o)

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I will definitely come to Club FT if you can persuade Doomie to do a DJ set.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I was rather grumpy at Club FT last time as to be fair, it DID seem a lot of similar tracks got played but I was feeling pretty ill anyway so to be honest was full of the grumps at everything, including EVERYONE WITH A DIGITAL CAMERA - sorry guys but PLEASE could you occasionally just let people enjoy having their meagre bit of suffering-through-the-ladies-pain fun without having to run off the dancefloor after a second away from the blinking photos?

I'm also still bitter that I am not allowed to play records. You wee sh1tes. I'm with Carlin. I HATE YOU ALL!

possibly not being entirely serious, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see the point of inviting people to play who are known for their eclectic tastes rather than knowing how to get people dancing - if the latter is not on Club FT's agenda now then it seems pointless to sell it as a disco - which seems to be what it wants to be, this being problematic if the guest DJ wants to 'educate' the punters on minimal tech-house, drill n' bass etc. - those are genres I enjoy but in the context of Club FT they don't seem at all appropriate...based on what I know of the organisers and their tastes, and the general atmos that ensues at the night.

Obviously Marcello enjoys winding people up more than actually dancing anyway.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, perhaps if i leant him my terry durham record! and, nick garrie, should it ever arrive

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Public Service Announcement - This is for the benefit of any random potential punters who might be reading. Club FT is actually a very enjoyable and friendly affair and not actually full of bickering menkos. You will smile and enjoy yourself, and the toilets are very nice. Please come :)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

omg! i'm going to submit my set of photos from last FT to the tate modern under "ladies pain". or possibly "zombies pain"

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(zpost)

Translation: I don't see the point of inviting people to play who are (a) not my mates; (b) not in agreement with my musical tastes; and (c) not me.

If all it was about was knowing how to get people dancing then that puts clubs at the level of Dachau. Man, that camp commandant could get them dancing in no time at all - fire off several rounds of ammo at their feet, all in perfect synchronisation!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If ILX were a film, miserable, malicious misanthrope Marcello would eventually be brought around to the way of liking fun by the cheeky yet loveable scamps from Freak Trigger. Unless it was by Ken Loach.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps stevem will play dairymilk warrior? i think it would be nice to hear that out.

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

you complete and utter prat, why do you get us to fire so much ire at you when you so obviously hate yourself completely, are you *that* lazy?

obvious x-post to Marcello

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth I think that might be a floor-clearer on this occasion but we'll see...

The funny thing is the last time Marcello kicked up this much fuss about Club FT was when it was Club Popular, at which I was also DJing. Is it a personal thing?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Thus do the stark realities of Club Incest make themselves apparent.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Jealousy, Steve. I'm deadly serious.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it's sure apparent to me

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello: try friends more (though seeing friendship as sheep-herding and incest must make the concept unappealing)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jealous of a penurious twentysomething no-mark who probably earns about five percent of what I earn?

Hey I'm deadly serious as well. If that's the kind of game you want to play.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and most of these 500 pissed NHS staff members were and are friends of mine. You know, the proper sort of friends; the kind who ring up, come round and ask after me, and the kind whom I ring up, come round to visit and ask after. The ones who keep inviting me back to DJ at their parties even if I stopped working there five years ago. People who have kept in touch, people far more able than anyone on ILx (with maybe four exceptions) to prevent me from doing the wrong thing. People who were there for me three years ago when everybody else shut the door on me.

I try friends plenty. I just prefer to keep them out of environments like ILx because they're better than that (and therefore better than me).

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

mark. you are happy with life, no? i am interested, why do you lose temper and shout at others who you consider in a worse position than you? if i am out of line, i apologize, and wont pursue further. i am just unsure why you get so annoyed on here sometimes, i didnt think you had reason to be

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello, I do not understand why you hang around here when you do not consider most of us friends, or even potential friends. It seems a little odd.

Marcello, if you want to keep your real friends, you'd be better off not being such a malicious cunt on public message boards. It's amazing what people find when they're idly surfing.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Translation: even guests should be forced to play Britney, Kelis and Scissor Sisters

Incorrect. If you DJ somewhere, do you turn up with precisely enough songs to fill the alotted time to the second? No. You bring a LOT of stuff of YOUR choosing that gives you the flexibility to respond to the mood of the crowd. This does NOT mean playing Britney.

At one point I would have techincally been a 'professional DJ', but I don't like what you are implying about this. My biggest hatred of DJ culture (one of the primary reasons I left it) was that of egotism, musical facism (listen to WHAT I WANT YOU TO HEAR OR ELSE YOU MINDLESS PEONS), and general fun-hating. Marcello, you have wonderfully confirmed that this is still alive. That said, I don't know you personally and have nothing against you. Hell, I'd quite like to chat with you and would probably love to hear a lot of your records. Fancy meeting me at the Chapel bar on Thursday for a drink?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no, all my friends are wise enough to avoid ILx/message boards/internet in general. They are fully aware of my deplorable need to exculpate the unpresentable aspects of my character in such environments.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

aldo you mean family members whom you've invited to DJ.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

As a DJ I never use fascist fun-hating tactics, it's all about friendly but subtle persuasion. Technically I'm a good mixer, even if socially I'm not (in my student days I used to make careful notes of all the BPMs which James Hamilton used to list in his Record Mirror column 'cos that sort of thing does come in useful).

I suppose it's because money isn't a factor; I only DJ at big NHS do's which I do just for the love of doing them and because I get a tremendous kick out of seeing people throwing themselves around the floor to my mixture of the expected and unexpected. There's no snobbery or faux-superiority involved, which unfortunately (in inverted form) I feel is the case with FT.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello, I met with Rob Bolton before he joined the London set - he's charming and genuine. Go on, meet him - he might prove to you that the cliquey fappers aren't all pathetic low-lifes who don't even approach the higher rate of tax.

xpost - Marcello, you said you wouldn't DJ for free. How does that equate with money not being an issue?

(also, inverted snobbery really gets my goat, and FT is barely afflicted by it at all. WE DON'T PLAY WHAT WE CAN'T DANCE TO)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No doubt Marcello is sure of his opinions because he has psychic powers, having never been to CFT.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

End the madness people, please.

I am playing stuff I like, end. If no one dances to Cabaret Voltaire, then they might do so to the Pet Shop Boys. I want people to dance, but they have to go to the bar sometime. There is no inverted snobbery here. I think the difference between Club fT and a student night is that while pop will be played it won't be the same five songs as everwhere else (see cheesy music thread: Dancing Queen, American Pie). Duran Duran, say, are without doubt pure pop, but there's a difference in playing Hungry Like The Wolf and playing Electric Barbarella.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I get a tremendous kick out of seeing people throwing themselves around the floor to my mixture of the expected and unexpected

So do I. And so does everyone who DJs at FT. We're much more alike than you are willing to admit, I think.

And yes, my request about meeting was serious - I really would enjoy talking with you about music, etc.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't start walking until 18 months, though, which probably explains the dancing dilemma.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps dr c could play an early factory themed set one time?

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(You have to ask Dr C, I think I did - when drunk as EQs scare me -around six to eight months ago. But all MC has to do is ask...)

I like M People Liz - bwah ha ha! (I actuallu own Elegant Slumming, there, I'm out of the M-closet.)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello despises us all - I don't think an invitation is very appropriate. And Liz OTM about M-People.

I've sometimes wondered what I would play if I did this sort of thing - I reckon I could get people moving to a mix of rocksteady, 70's pop, soul, disco and post-punk - maybe the odd Factory track too.

But - secret confession time - (whispers) I don't really know how you *do* it. The last time I DJ'd I was 16 - do you have to MIX and worry about BPMs etc? What is the equipment like? Do you just have 2 CD players and a set of headphones.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd love to see dr c dj if his sets are anything like his mix cds (which still get played regularly at my house).

this thread should maybe deleted - I mean if random googlers do happen to see a flier it's hardly a good representation of the club to read an ageing misanthrope railing against people he deems beneath his is it?

Dr C - you're on a par with most of us with that, and I'd love to hear that set

apologies for statements above. its not really any of my business, i concede. there seemed to be a little antipathy between a couple of the people, which is understandable, and perhaps even cathartic on some level, but i thought it would be a shame if that extended to an unwelcoming attitude to an event, regardless of any intentions to show up. i don't like the idea that anybody would be unwelcome anywhere. surely antipathy on a board doesnt extend to actual dislike in person does it?

Dr C, thanks for the though, but I don't think they want me DJing at Club FT.

Delete the word "DJing" and you'd be just as accurate.

Oh well! Onwards and upwards!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it depends Gareth, if it goes on for so long and so nastily then yes, I'd love to be proved wrong and find that in person M is a nice guy and someone who I could talk with, but I just seriously doubt it.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it depends on whether cockfarming behaviour is carried out to FAPs and that. Mind you, thinking someone's a tit online will predispose you to thinking they're a tit in real life. In cases where I've met people before I've encountered them being crappy online, I'm more prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.

xpost and why do you think that is, Marcello?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Inevitably, I expect it probably does. Personally, I've only men about a dozen people on ILX and, without exception, they're choice geezers / geezerwenches.

There are a couple I've noticed who whiff a bit, mind.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Does your Club FT have private cabana rooms, btw?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

For discreetly discrete liaisons? It's not that sophisticated.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and in my case it does extend to dislike in person. I made the mistake of looking in at Trig Brother a couple of Saturdays ago. Talk about a lynch mob. I've rarely seen so much simmering hatred in a room.

Yeah, well you know who's to blame for that DON'T YOU?

Entire population of ILx (entirep...), August 17th, 2004.

I'm doing it so you don't have to.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Side question - have some people changed their ID since the ILX break? I'm slow on the uptake here maybe - does david acid = gareth and does alba = N? I like to know who's who.

The only instance of cockfarming at FAPs that I've witnessed was by someone who doesn't post here anymore who started chucking drinks on the floor because he was being ignored. Otherwise no one has cockfarmed AFAIK. Let's not cockfarm here either.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr C, the current "what do you look like thread" is very handy for confirming identities (i was confused by mr alba myself), but you are correct on those two :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i dont mind who turns up, i have no antipathy to anyone, even pinefox!

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

one day I'm going to compile all the threads that turn out like this and make them into one big book, which I'll sell online. Just a bit of fun, let's be cool, etc.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Not without the express permission of all the authors involved you won't.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, Daniel.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello, I've already gotten permission from Robert Christgau, Aja, Conner Smedley and The Amazing Randy. All I need is yours and I'm all set!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm his agent (btw any DJing opportunities around? - his track record includes the famous NHS Manumission) and I say full steam ahead.

Right lunchtime. Let's snack. Benjys or Subway? You spoil me, Essex.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

How fitting that Robert Christgau should find his true aesthetic level - right down there (or up there?) with The Amazing Randy.

I do have agents, but MikeyG is not among them.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(still negotiating with Calum, Kanye West and Momus, but I'm sure we'll find common ground soon)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

How bizarre, going to a social gathering where everyone hates you. At least Gr*h*m had the excuse of youth and naivety.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

surely antipathy on a board doesnt extend to actual dislike in person does it?

Why would it not? Like Alba, I hate the idea the things done on line somehow do not count off line.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, you and your canting self-righteousness. Still, nice to have it all out in the open, ooer missus etc.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Christ - STOP IT!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

surely antipathy on a board doesnt extend to actual dislike in person does it?

Why shouldn't it? If someone has regularly made online digs at people I like, my work, my politics, my age, my gender, my earning power, the area I live in and called me a facist, I fail to see why I should smile nicely and buy them a drink. Anybody?
I tried being nice and understanding to a lost-internet-case once before and look where that got me.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, Dr C has a point. I'm going to make lunch and then do some work.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone on a football site called me a 'pink commie black lover' once. I'm going to put it on my tombstone.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't mean you shd stop it Anna!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

T/S: 'pink commie black lovers' vs 'black commie Pink lovers'

I wonder which there are more of.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The ratio is 9:7 (excluding Latin America)

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh but it's just all so pointless.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Anna OTM in general; that said there *are* people online who I've developed mutual hate with who I reckon I'd probably quite like. Because hate is so often built up mutually. Er, I had a beer at lunch.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Still, nice to have it all out in the open, ooer missus etc.

You've been pretty fucking blinkered if you thought everyone was enjoying your presence up to now.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

mark, every poster here has other posters that like them, whether you do or dont. i know you don't like aggressive and abusive posts, but, it might carry more weight if you didn't indulge, yourself. otherwise, it becomes difficult to tell who is who exactly.

or, why if you don't like people posting 'nasty' things, why, did you feel it necessary to join in?

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Last Saturday afternoon I bought a calendar in Tamworth.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

tamworth-in-arden? i have not been, how was it? those midland towns i don't know much about, its an area i haven't been to much

i did, however, get sent this postcard the other week, from those environs

http://www.norfolkwindmills.com/postcards/ashbydelazouch.jpg

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent. Try Dunton Bassett more.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a pair of boots in Ashby de la Zouch once. Sturdy design.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I only really went to have a look at Nick Drake's grave and the view from there over the Cotswolds. Quite nice, obviously prosperous-looking but extremely small village. Took some nice photos though.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. I'm freelancing for Verso and I see no Marcello Carlin book scheduled here. What's happening with it?

___jbutler___, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I've recently been asking Verso the same question.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I've done that Nick Drake pilgrimage. Nice pub in the village. His gravestone has the lyrics of 'From the Morning' etched onto it. Did you see Far Leys?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoyed that postcard of Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a couple of others here, here

david acid (gareth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to say I don't think I will either play or attend now but then I remembered that Anna will be playing The Knife...I think it's great knowing what DJs are gonna play in advance. I wish I always knew, it could save a lot of time and money sometimes. And I hope the next Club FT is as enjoyable as this thread is depressing. Pip pip.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The next one will be even better because I will be back from Spain, and it will be Freshers' week so I shall flyer our halls five minutes away and we will get lots of bemused Middle Eastern students who will cease being bemused when they realised that at the heart of it is all is fun.

I am sorry to be missing next weeks though, both due to Alangs birthday, and Anna and Steve'm's sets. On the other hand I can listen to that Carsmile and Tom Ewing Dj-ing any time so they just aren't so special to me.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and enrique if yr reading this - do come along! i didn't realise you'd moved to london.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

London! I beleive he may now be part of the Crouch End massive.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer to think of it as an an incestuous sheep farm.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

am moving in 48 hours. am practically dead. hopefully by next thursday everything will be a-ok tho, so will try to persuade the missus that interweb people are not *all* compleat psychopaths and that we should make an effort.

ENRQ, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't show her this thread.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Word. Good luck with the move, ENRQ.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

180 new posts. How bizarre.

Anyway... the small business of my surgery has settled the matter for once and for all. As I shall be in stitches, (and I don't mean the laughter which this thread has provoked.) I shall probably be unable to attend anything much except my bed. So no Freaky Trigger *or* The Drones Club.

Which is a shame, as I actually wanted to go as soon as Anna mentioned Electric Barbarella. :-(

Someone please play "Always Crashing In The Same Car" as I think it is appropriate for this thread.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

got my tickets fer London today, so am definitley coming, whee!

if anyone sees a pale kid in a Willow/Tara t-shirt awkwardly hanging about, plz approach me in conversation k thx

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yay! i think it's pretty obvious who we are when you're there (ie almost everyone)

(does that sentence make sense?)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Waaaahhhhh!!!

I want to go! The first time I don't have to work the next day, and I can't go.

Does anyone have any crutches they can lend me? Old skool crutches, the kind that go under your armpits, coz I won't be able to use the new kind that go over your wrists.

I can dance in crutches! Especially if Anna plays Electric Barbarella!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

See you later.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 26 August 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Tonight marks my treacherous move to the pestiferous regions of North London, so I will come along. WBS, will you be there? I can bring along that Delgados CD for you, if so.

I will pay £1 towards the GE if someone plays 'Bottle Rocket' by The Go! Team.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 26 August 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope the DJ wins my £1 tonight with aqua.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 26 August 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Which Aqua Ken?

Requests posts should go up the day before so I can download get them from my extensive library of CDs - but if you bring the Go! Team along I'm sure someone will play it.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

was tempted to request the cha cha slide, but suspect it's too late for that.

and don't think i have enough money tonight to get drunk enough to do it by myself in front of all of you...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 26 August 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Next month is Club Popular Colette and Cha Cha Slide does qualify...

I'm a regular kind of guy

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

JTN - tis OK, I have already procured one. I might bring the G!T along in case you forget that, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

is the G! team album out?

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

September 6th, I think.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I want it now goddamit

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I am going to go. How about you, Doc?

the bellefox, Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"no darling, the only interweb mentalist is the one round the corner, y'know, the one we're moving to get away from"

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Who are these chaps? (I know nuzzink)

And I'm not coming tonight so I won't hear them then either. Drat! I am all sniffly and tired but still want to come out! But a relatively QNI it will be with my bottle of pink wine and friends fake turkish tia maria.

Oh dear.

Starry (hello chickens), Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I am in a SUIT for the first time in over two years in this job, so will be going home and changing first. I'm also trying to persuade my flatmate to come along so there will be even more in the way of preposterous dancing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 August 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Boys are hott in suits though, Matt. I'd keep it on.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 26 August 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

unfortunately, if they've been dancing preposterously, they tend to be hot in suits too.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 26 August 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Meta-pus all round.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 August 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly, i don't think i'll be bringing a whole load of girls this time. but maybe at least one...plus two guys, though. so i'm not helping with the guy/girl proportions.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 26 August 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be there by seven, and I have a thirst that could drain the atlantic

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, I thought there were a couple of reasons why you couldn't go tonight? Or is that just the missus?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

are you coming tonight dada?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

burn the heretic

The thing is, deep down, you probably believe that.

Tom I take it there's no chance of your playing "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" at the next Club Popular?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm skint. Boracic. "I'm wearing a cardboard belt"

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

no, I'm allowed out to play :o)

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

There is every chance, I was thinking yesterday what a great end-of-night tune it would make.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(That makes it sound like the "Sit Down" of '61, oh dear)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

well, strictly speaking it would be the "Oops Upside Your Head" of '61, wouldn't it? (actually there's a challenge for yer bootleggers...)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone played Kriss Kross! Someone else snorted white stuff off the bar! The elderly, dancing letch of old wasn't there! What fun.

And I, despite almost falling asleep waiting for the 43, went home and danced to V until 2.30. I'm beginning to realise now how foolish that was.

marianna lcl, Friday, 27 August 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

also, as always, thank you very much for coming everyone, a good time had all round i think.

alsoalso, if you have your diaries handy we are now booked in for:

30th September (which will be club popular)
26th October
25th November

and an undefined, as yet, xmas party, but i think that's going to take some negotiations...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

rob, V are the latest new boyband. one of them writes a column for popjustice (in fact, his mother has written it this week), which is one of the best things on the interweb, as you can see pop actually eating itself in front of you...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

And... mark.

Speaking of which, I did venture into the gents at one point to hear Barry point out that he's not saying washing your hands turns you queer, but...

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I should have played V later I think.

Yes a good time, thanks to the guests, sorry about the sound, it only really affected Anna's set I think but it got me really grumpy and convinced that it was too quiet with the result that my ear is arsed.

I am impressed with Cis for knowing all the words to the mouse on the stair.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Fun last night! Thanks, FT kids. Can I put my name forward for another DJing session in 6 months or whenever?

Andrew, yes you did - Toby was telling me that it's manly to just touch your fingers to the stream of water rather than actually wash them, so I was saying I could be All Hetero Man and still have clean hands.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I was saying I could be All Hetero Man

"could" being the appropriate word, eh dear ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I was made proud by all the people who knew the words to the rap in the middle bit of Juistified and Ancient.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

But Andrew, we're all from Mu Mu!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 27 August 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Confidential to Stevie T, as was too dusted to answer properly: the Bracewell/Frieze link is down to Andrew Renton who was the co-curator of the Frieze Goldsmith's show and is Linder Sterling's sometime gallerist.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 27 August 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I once met Renton in the old Compendium bookshop in Camden and terrified him with my photographic memory of 1980s style magazines.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 27 August 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope you all have hangovers something rotten. ;-)

Sounds like a good time was had. Sorry I missed it.

JtN, that's fabulous - have done that too. AR has eyepatched pals in this parish.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 27 August 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like my nose. Isn't it nice?

alix (alix), Friday, 27 August 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's gorgeous, petal. I just hurt myself suppressing laughter at the pictures while my boss was in the room.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 27 August 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the captions that make me soil myself. Ken, I salute you. Not in a Nazi way though. Oh ho no.

alix (alix), Friday, 27 August 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

#51 is my favourite picture of Carsmile Steve ever.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 27 August 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

well, whoever posted upthread while logged out about there being too many cameras around was clearly ignored!

nice captions ken. i'm pretty impressed with the photo i took of us.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 27 August 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

actually was that kate's GOOP being consumed on pictures 27 and 28??

ken c (ken c), Friday, 27 August 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yahoo photo server is dumb :( hopefully will be back up later

ken c (ken c), Friday, 27 August 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I am very sorry for being stupidly drunk. "You're all lovely!" "Nooo we are together in Electric Dreams". I burn with shame.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 27 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

B-but, Love Never Ends! No Matter How Far It Seems! Are you telling me these were empty words?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 27 August 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

hope you got back ok andrew - my drunken self this morning totally forgot you were here and i was supposed to wake you up at 5 :(

ken c (ken c), Friday, 27 August 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - Also sorry to Ken for not leaving a thank-you note, but that's what you get for not waking me up, you slack bastard.

I got into Tottenham Hale at 6:26, to find that the 6:41 train was delayed to 6:56, and I = FUCT. Then at 6:41 the train arrived, everyone got on, and it left.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 27 August 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

PHEW! Glad the midnight WAP research at the bus stop paid off. You madman.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 27 August 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Suzy, that wasn't very confidential.

the bellefox, Friday, 27 August 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c, rob bolton and i all agreed there should be more Rage Against The Machine played at this bitch

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 27 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK YOU STEVEM I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME

club FT (ken c), Friday, 27 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

on the way home i composed a folky/acoustic, kings of convenience sytlee version of 'killing in the name of' in my head.
a hit in waiting, i think.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 27 August 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

'stylee'

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 27 August 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just had a look at debates upthread. I would like it if there were more indie classics at the club, sometimes. I liked N's post about Kingmaker and the one with which he followed it. I did not enjoy Guest DJ SteveM's set that much, in itself, though as JtN pointed out, he did look the part. I think that I liked Guest DJ Anna F's set more. Was it she who played '99 Red Balloons'?

the bellefox, Friday, 27 August 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

+, it was nice to talk to Suzy about FW.

the bellefox, Friday, 27 August 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It was me who played '99 Red Ballons', yes.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 27 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Carsmile was very keen on the fact that it was the German version.

Was there any special reason that you played it?

the bellefox, Friday, 27 August 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Wrong version for me - I'm a big fan of the happy hardcore remix from years later.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 August 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

There was one happy hardcore mix on the night - think it was Destiny's Child.

But yes, it was tops - fantastic to finally meet Mr Rf too.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 27 August 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

There was drum n' bass Destiny's - props to Alan for clearing the dancefloor so i didn't have to ;) my set was in no way pinefox-friendly it is true (Dizzee, Scissors, Pulp, Prodigy, Betty Boo, Jaxx, Alcazar, Britney vs QOTSA, Kriss Kross, KLF, Bobby Brown blah blah).

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Saturday, 28 August 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone else snorted white stuff off the bar!

Not what it sounds like. Much worse, probably. The white stuff being russian, which a) I'd talked the barman into making for me even though I'd missed last orders, b) I then embarrassingly didn't quite have enough enough money to pay for, and c) we proceeded to spill all over his bar. And the worst bit? After the snorting attempt it all just dribled back out of my nose and down my t-shirt and ohmygodI'mdisgustingkillmenow.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 28 August 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Two bs in dribbled.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 28 August 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

...because the spelling error is the most embarassing part of that story.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 28 August 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

spilling error

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 28 August 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The sound was sufficiently poor during stevem's set that it was difficult to tell from the bar what was a bootleg and what wasn't.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 28 August 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My moment of the night = Cis and I doing synchronised Busted jumps.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 28 August 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I met Jim D. He works in computer games!!

the bellefox, Saturday, 28 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Synchronised Busted jumps! SO GOOD.

Was a fantastic night. Apologies to anyone I was talking to and then suddenly went "omg ALCAZAR! omg V!" and ran off to the dancefloor mid-sentence; I was a little bit with the hyperactive. Also: SCATMAN WORLD. One of these days someone will do an extended 'rubbish white rapping in nineties pop music' sequence and my life will be complete.

I'm quite impressed with myself for knowing all the words to the mouse lived in a windmill song. Wait, no, impressed isn't quite the word.

cis (cis), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

great pictures, ken! (although the shoes one was taken at FT and not how does it feel) i spent all weekend in a computer-free cottage and i got a text while i was in norfolk about jim's white russian photo. absolutely classic.

i had a fantastic time, although drinks kept appearing in my hand (i probably kept asking people to buy them for me, to be fair) and so i don't remember much from the end of the night. alas.

ha, don't think there's any face-on pics of the pigtails, all the evidence is pretty sketchy. (put them in originally as an illustration that my hair was too long, and it spiralled from there)

more fun!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The end of the night involved shouting in Sainsbury's, as all good nights do. It also involved leaving us (me & the lovely Ken) at a bus-stop only for us to find Liz, Rob & Marianna already there. Liz phoned the Journey Planner WAP service, and they agreed it was ridiculous.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Colette, I think Ken was trying to say that the FT shoe shot he took was reminiscent of Ian W's rather erratic photo composition on the How Does It Feel website.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

...though trying to ascertain the Mind of Ken is a pretty erratic business in itself.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Synchronised Busted jumps?!?!?!? I missed this?!?!?

Oh no!!!

(Though I'm still convinced that the previous Busted jumps were what fucked up my ankle.)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The German version scans better Pinefox. Well, I think it does.
Kate, I played Electric Barbarella so you were there in spirit.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The German version has Luftballon, but of course no-one much says "air balloons", so it became "red balloons" in the English versh, which used the same video, which featured balloons of many different colours.

I remember thinking that this was important, at the time.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah for Electric Barbarella! Thank you, Anna!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahaha, Club FT was the first and ONLY instance of fun that I had on my London vacation so far! I took the subway back to the hotel, had a bite to eat and immediatley felt quite, quite ill. Turns out that I came down with a nasty case of flu that put me out of comission for the following days- still have a pretty bad cold, but am going Indie-Dancing tonight anyway, it being the last night I have in London and all.

But anyway, it was great fun! Apologies to Swygart, who I forgot to say goodbye to (your chart trivia knowedlege is awe-inspiring and a bit scary.)

I have pics, including some pretty good ones of colette and William. Will post them when I get back home.
