Fire!

There's a fire in the top flat three doors along. I walked past it five minutes ago and noticed nothing, then a minute later I heard screaming and sirens. There were flames leaping out of the window and people crying in the street. I've come indoors again because I feel like such a fucking rubber necker. I'm not too worried about my flat because it's on the ground floor and the wind's blowing the other way, but the roof beams have just caught so it'll travel my way, if more slowly.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't recall ever being this close to a house fire. I've seen smoke from a distance and the aftermath of fires, but never one blazing so close.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Just enough time to take out a new improved totally ace insurance policy then?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Insurance policy renewed a couple of months ago. Glad I got my own and am not relying on shitty factor insurance.

I've put my photos, passport and jewellery box in a bag, just in case. I hope this is a stupid over-reaction, but better safe than sorry, eh?

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Cripes, Madchen, I love your flat!

I bet it was a chip pan. I hope everyone's OK.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Be thankful that the Celtic match is at Pittodrie not Parkhead in half an hour so there is some chance of the fire brigade actually getting there...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed. The fire brigade were there before I realised what was going on - double quick. I don't know where the nearest fire station is, but I'm guessing it's quite close.

The flames aren't leaping out of the window any more, but there are huge clouds of yellow smoke billowing out.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, from the front it looked under control, but from the back it's scary. There's a huge heat haze coming off the roof and all you can hear is the banging and cracking of the roof beams. I've been talking to my 3rd floor neighbour, who is getting very edgey.

(somebody has left their washing on the line at the back - that'll smell lovely when they bring it in)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I can hear the banging and cracking from my flat.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a fire station just across the other side of Celtic Park from you - not far from where I usually park my car on matchdays. As I said, if there had been a match on, the traffic just now would have been horrendous and getting from there to yours could have taken a LOT longer.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

: (((

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, totally. I was down on Duke Street half an hour ago and there was hardly any traffic - just people out walking and enjoying the sunshine.

A fireman has just emerged carrying a fluffy cat. I am assuming (hoping) this means there are no people in there that need saving.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG, will you tell Ally I might not be over to watch the marathon - depends what happens here. Ta.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I commented to my third floor neighbour that it looked like it was under control and she pointed out the leaping flames reflected in the window of the flat over the road.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got his answering machine--I'll try again, in a minute.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to go to the pub to watch said Celtic match. Take care, Madchen, I hope the wind stays in the other direction from your house x

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Ailsa

Flames now leaping from roof of flat next door (one flat closer to my block). Press photographer has arrived, police interviewing people on the street.

There's no way to get a fire engine around the back - it's a closed-in block of tenements, so they have to get what equipment they can through the close to the drying green at the back.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

They're now spraying the whole corner of the block with water from a raised platform (3 high-ceilinged storeys up - not sure how many feet/metres that is). There are lumps of lead falling from the roof into the street and people are starting to move the cars that were parked in front of that block. We all got moved away by the police, so I'm back indoors for the moment.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought he might be upstairs but it's just as well I didn't bother checking because he is out with his lesbian.

he was very concerned sounding but I put his mind at ease, that you were not in any immediate danger. perhaps I understated it, too much, and he won't even telephone, to check you're okay. sorry!

he said to call him if something happens, I think. I don't know if he meant something other than what already has or what.

crosspost

12 or 13 metres or so.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The flat next door to the one where the fire was has now totally gone up and there are mini explosions coming out of the windows. There are five fire engines working on it now.

I'm pretty sure the fire won't get into my flat. The absolute worst that can happen is the flats on the 3rd floor in my block or the one next door will go and then there would be tons of water damage, but it's still four flats away from that. I think (hope) they'll put it out before that happens.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking a couple days ago about starting a thread asking who has been around fires, not that that's exactly what this thread is. (I hope that doesn't make me somehow responsible for the fire.) The last house I lived in with my parents was next to a funeral parlor, and there was a fire there once. I woke up knowing something was wrong, but not quite what. It must have been the flickering light from the flames. It's a good thing that our house wasn't on fire, because by the time my parents got themselves organized and made it downstairs, they would probably have been dead. The funeral home lost at least one hearse, as well as a couple corpses, as I recall.

I also lived in the top floor of an apartment building and watched a couple buildings across from me while they were on fire (with fire fighters up on a nearby roof). Actually, I benefited nicely from that fire*, since the buildings were torn down soon after, giving me a view of Rittenhouse Square, when I was paying a fraction of the rent most people with that privilege were paying.

*Which I don't mind thinking too much, since as far as I know, nobody was injured.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

All the flats west of the one where it started have gone up to the end of the block (that's the direction the wind is blowing in) but only one flat to the east (my way). It's only the top floor that's burning, but all ones below will be inundated with the horrible brown stuff that is also cascading down the front of the buildings.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ailsa, I hope you are enjoying the match, with lots of good beer.

the bellefox, Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinefox, priorities??

The police cordon is now up to the path to my front door.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

My God, this is starting to sound like a conflagration worthy of the national news. And Oor Luce is the middle of it! Are you sure they're using water?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

'is in the middle of it'

Note to authorities: I am not suggesting Madchen is a twisted firestarter.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

First bullets in your window, now fires next door. They're closing in, Madchen.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

'bullets in your window'?!

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

forget it, jock, it's dennistoun.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

denistoun?

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

denislaw

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

why did you type "denistoun?"

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

momentarily, I forgot how to keep my mouth shut.

will this be on the news?

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

you type with your tongue. that is newsworthy.

come back, madchen.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Two ns.

There is a TV crew, yes. Still wearing Access All Areas passes for the Great Scottish run. Did you see me in the Daily Record yesterday as well? (Alba, if you can scan it for me please do - don't have my own copy)

It isn't half noisy out there. I have a headache.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Three, I mean.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Bullets through my window

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You have three headaches? Jesus, can't someone go help this woman?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

cookie has a copy of yesterday's record.

actually, he has copies of lots of yesterday's records.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Did he? Good. What do I look like - did they use the one of me unhingeing my jaw to get the burger in my mouth?

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

nick and sink, on that thread, are great.

I think you look just fine and cookie looks as insane as in reality.

the write-up is by one "tam cowan".

I think he says they have shitty tables but he might have just making it up, as he went along.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

A woman has just walked past me, sobbing. I think she'd just got home to find the devastation.

(They did have shitty tables, with great big cracks in. The candlewax poured through and ruined Dave's friend's shoes and trousers.)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what you get, for being friends, with dave.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(I already made an "ad-lib" joke, in case you were wondering)

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my goodness! I think you'll need a stiff drink once this is all over, and the reality sets in...

Vicky (Vicky), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehe, Madchen comes to the aid of hunky firemen by refilling their drinking water bottles in her kitcen :)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering how long it would take for the firemen perving to start ;)

Hope it all works out okay for you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The firemen are not perving, they are being very professional.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I was trying to recreate the spirit of the Mastermind thread with Sinker.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's smouldering now. The crowds have cleared and the police cordon has shrunk back 10 metres or so. There are still two fire engines including one of the big ones with a crane on the top. There are two firemen up there prodding at window frames and lintels with a big stick and nothing is standing up to the prodding - they're just knocking stuff into the room. I wonder if it's salvageable? My guess is probably not and they'll have to do some demolishing, but if they do, will they knock down the whole building or can they get away with rebuilding the top couple of floors? I'm not sure I want Dennistoun Village's modern apartment blocks to encroach on my lovely Victorian Street. :(((

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

if the structure isn't so damaged and it's only top floor or so, they'd probably just fix it up and they'd have to make it look as fitting as poss.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I didn't even see you in the Record. But there you are, in the food guide. With Cook. You both look ace.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to be the only one who hasn't seen this picture now. Are Dave and Lorna in it too?

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I just bumped into Cook in the street. He was holding hands with some girl!

Then he blathered on about the Record. What is all this about the Record?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(he was talking about the CD on the front and how it had some songs by some bloke)

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Homes 'gutted' in tenement blaze

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

She is a lesbian (or so they told me)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen 'gutted' in potential spoiling of her nice Victorian street.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that Cozen in the photo next to Cook?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I promise that cook told me that she's a lesbian but I remember she did have a boyfriend that I thought had cowboy boots.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

geraghty.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, don't take any note of my damage/fixing estimations, I recall somewhat underestimating the results of the events of september 11th, 2001.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I realise it's Dave G, I just went and looked at it again. There is a ketchup bottle shaped like a tomato in a "we're really kitsch" stylee. (xpost)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG, are you suggesting the Finlay Drive fire is going to precipitate another war?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the picture but I'm not in it.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did everyone buy the Daily Record yesterday? Is this normal?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought everyone bought the record.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I buy the Record on a Saturday. For the football gossip.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I asked Cook to buy the Record after Sarah sent me a text message saying I was in it.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Daily Record: come for the football gossip, get tricked into looking at pictures of the Glasgow indie scene"

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

there are rumours of terrorist cells, on west princes street. our landlord offered to move us into one.

oops.

I had to buy cookie's record, yesterday, and said, to him, in front of the cashier, "you're making it look like I buy the record, now" and he said, so that the cashier could hear, too, "now, you're making it look like I buy the record".

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It can't be that shameful, if Ailsa does it ;)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

she has a reason.

I don't like sport and cookie can't read.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yes, his eyesight is obviously a problem.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

also: his brain.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.geocities.com/lucyalder/myhouse.txt

See the red blob on the bush? My flat is right behind that bush.
(it was meant to be a cross, but my photoshop skeez are not good)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the wind was kind, to you.

the cross looks like an unlucky skydiver.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They're using unlucky skydivers as bombs!

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My goodness! I hope everyone is ok.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey - I met David Geraghty on a debauched weekend in Derby four and a half years ago. If its the same person, its a tiny tiny world.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris says yes, he is from Derby

Vicky (Vicky), Sunday, 22 August 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it is the same person, since he is from derby.

he used to live with me and with cookie.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

He is from Sinister as well as Derby. He's odd, but happy.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

he probably is happy but I don't think that that would be one of the first two or thousand adjectives, that would have come to mind, that I would allow myself to use.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

He is many things.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

to many people.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucy, glad you're okay - you've been unbelievably calm! I hope everything's okay with your flat when the mopping up (literally and figuratively) operation gets underway.

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

For a minute, I thought Cook had made a record!

the bellefox, Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, he drove us round Derby on a friend's birthday weekend. We got very drunk and played with a toy guitar to the sound of Billie and Five. I probably should have spoken to him more, but my mind was on other things...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ladies by any chance Monsieur Datington?

Vicky (Vicky), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"a driver" isn't a bad description.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"a drunk driver" would be a bad description, so I hope it wouldn't be accurate.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

He was a sober driver.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

that's party what I meant.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have now seen Saturday's Record. Was it really that dirty there?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

How dirty? I haven't seen the report. I didn't find it dirty.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 23 August 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno - it said "nice food, but filthy restaurant" or something.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe "nice food, but filthy customers"?

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 23 August 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It says:

"Minging, honking, bowfing - I'm still struggling to find the best Scottish adjective to describe the tables".

All members of the party except Cook are seen happily resting their elbows in the filth.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I kept my paws off. It was not that dirty, I don't think. She is mainly a lesbian. Haha. I barely recall that conversation with Nick.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You were floating on a cloud.

It was funny, because she pulled her arm away when I called at you down the street.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad my friends don't make unjustified assertions of infidelity on threads started by my girlfriend.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I remember being silly and skipping down the street, or something. I had no idea I was that drunk until I thought about it, today.

Later I went to see Dean Friedman and had a coke but, was probably still drunk. But not with lesbians.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Mark, for heaven's sake, she was a lesbian.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally is the most trustworthy boyfriend a girl could wish for. It was just that she was obviously embarrassed.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

She was a lesbian? Haha maybe I turned her without realising! Why thank you, Nick.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Well maybe she wasn't a lesbian, but I was led to believe she was.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Heck, I get embarrassed if people see me holding Ally's hand.

I read the review on the website. I didn't like the bit where he made a virtue of the chicken breast meat he was served - any half decent restaurant reviewer knows that chicken breast is the most boring and flavourless of meats. Give me thigh any day.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Tam Cowan is not a half-decent restaurant reviewer. He's not even a tenth-decent. He knows fuck all about food.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Or comedy.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he the one who DJs at the Shack?

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean Friedman

really? did you thank your lucky stars you went? and was his bastard son there?

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes and no.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You tragic Biscuiteer.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

And Tam Cowan = small fat tv and radio presenter, does lots of football-related comedy shows.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen, you'll be thinking of Tam Coyle (aka shambling drunk comedy goalkeeper from Camera Obscura's Bowlie team - ask Cook)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I scored, past him. So he must have been shambling.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops. My brane still hasn't got Scottish slebs sorted out.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like the idea of a universe where Tam Coyle is a sleb. Madchen, your house fire is in the Evening Times today (though I guess Alba may have alerted you to this already).

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought it on the way home. Rhoda (pictured with son) was one of the women sobbing in the street. Alba didn't alert me to it - in fact, I've been the one alerting him, what with Shell on page 3.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The Evening Times does not have a Page 3! Or rather, it does, but usually has some story about hospital closure outrage rather than naked Shell.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was the Sun.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shell shines out of The Sun's arse.

A speaker caught on fire at the bar I was at tonight! At first I thought it was a light going on, but no, it was a speaker bursting into flames. Then a guy threw beer on it (yes!), proving that beer is more water than alcohol b/c the fire went out. They unhooked the poor speaker and took it away. I've never seen such a thing happen before (I went into immediate flight mode - jacket, exits, ready. But it was out before I could even put down my beer).

Rumpie, Monday, 21 November 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

If by the original one, you mean Madchen's fire, yes Celtic were playing. In Aberdeen. (you'll find they play nearly every weekend for about ten months of the year, so this is bound to coincide with a couple of fires over time. Doesn't mean there is a direct link)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

seven months pass...
exactly Ailsa, correlation does not imply causation!

There was a fire during the week in the office where I do my Saturday job, in a bookshop here in Oxford. The funny thing is I said hello to several colleagues on the shop floor when I arrived this morning and NONE of them told me that it had happened, so it was a real shock when I opened the door to be greeted with a burnt smell and all of my papers covered in soot. Apparently someone had left a fan running when they went home and it was running perched precariously on a pile of books, so the vibrations made it fall off, the wire casing coming off as it hit the floor, where it proceeded to mash up the carpet and set it alight. Fortunately the person who'd been remiss enough to leave the fan on had at least shut the door and it is a small poorly ventilated room so the oxygen was used up pretty quickly and none of the desks, cabinets or computers caught alight. I have now been relocated to a MUCH better office at the top of the building which is well lit and ventilated (it actually has windows and a nice view) next to the second hand books department and it is amusing to discover that the staff in that department are by far the oldest in the whole shop, as if old books require old people to sell them!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 24 June 2006 08:53 (nineteen years ago)

New people haven't lived long enough to know all the books yet. That's why you can only give them the new books to sell.

My house caught fire when I was sixteen. It was odd because the previous evening my parents had given me and my brother a talk about what to do do in case of fire, and suggested having a drill sometime. So when mum came in at five in the morning to tell us the house was on fire we were all "suuure Mum". I had to jump out of a first floor window, very exciting.

Matt, Monday, 22 October 2007 07:13 (eighteen years ago)

Our university halls of residence went on fire about two weeks after I moved out - my former room (still unoccupied at the time) was the worst affected as it was directly above the scene of the blaze. A friend of mine had to climb out his (ground floor) window because the corridor was full of smoke, then climbed back in because he'd forgotten his guitar.

i reported a fire at an old disused timber yard about a month ago, it was only small but at night time not many people would have seen the smoke. The fire brigade arrived pretty sharply and had no probs putting it out. There was next to no damage.

Then amazingly less than a week after that, the whole place was knocked down due to a new 'development'.

hmmmm

Ste, Monday, 22 October 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

You'd be amazed how many buildings in Glasgow (and latterly in my parents' home town of Inverness) that are struggling to get permission to convert to flats seem to accidentally go up in smoke. It's a staggering coincidence...

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

if by carlsbad village you mean downtown carlsbad, that's pretty close to the water and west of the 5 freeway. it's hard to see the fire getting quite that far.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

but i feel that nervousness too - my parents are about a mile from the water and they've been told to "be ready" for evacuation. the idea of a wildfire getting from east SD to the water is pretty amazing.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

it's west of the 5 and close to the water but 3 hours ago the mandatory evac. zone was only a quarter mile from her place. she works approx 4 miles to the west of her place and did not have to go in because the place was burning.

But come on. 500k evacuated? In three days? NATIONALLY declared state of emergency (this time, on time)?

I used to think my mother in law was crazy for reacting the way she does this time of year...she lives in the foothills west of Pasadena, and her home has been threatened in the past. I still think she's crazy, but not for being afraid of the fires.

Kerm, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

East to West winds are called Santa Anas, and they blow very dry air from the desert. They usually happen around this time of the year and that's why the fires are so bad. (End of rainless summer + dry strong winds = explosive tinderbox.) West to East is more normal other times of the year.

omar little, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

yeah ok, the Santa Anas. The one time in my life I visited LA (last year) it really struck me that the climate is basically desert- my friend kept her screenless windows open (no bugs!?) etc. When I read about Atlanta's water problems I can't fathom how LA and SD get their freshwater. The whole place boggles my midwestern brane.

anyway, best of luck everybody. The pictures I've seen are pretty whoa.

Famous Raymond Chandler quote, from "Red Wind"

There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.

And Pasadena's feelin' it now, from the Arrowhead fire.

nickn, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

When I read about Atlanta's water problems I can't fathom how LA and SD get their freshwater.

They steal it from up north. Not actually steal, but use way the hell more than their share. It's the desert! You don't need a lawn if you have to water it twice a day! If you want a lawn, move to Kentucky or something...

A couple of friends had to evacuate from Encinitas. They were supposed to finalize the purchase of a house today. Both homes are in the evacuation zone.

I'm so glad I moved this summer.

They steal it from up north. Not actually steal, but use way the hell more than their share. It's the desert!

It's more complex than outright theft (you could make a case for Central/Imperial Valley agricultural water subsides being more of a negative affect than the Sprawl), but a few basic changes could make a difference. I can't recommend Cadillac Desert enough.

Also, SoCal can adjust to drought conditions extremely well. Droughts have happened here before and will happen again - I don't recall Georgia ever having a drought.

Walking around here today has been a strange shift after coming back from Hawaii. It's not unfamiliar -- there was plenty of ash, haze blocking the sun and the smell of smoke in past years such as 2003 -- but it's still jarring.

Good friend Stripey just passed on the word that yesterday her favorite area hiking spot, Whiting Ranch, burned up. She's quite upset and I don't blame her. I went out that direction with her some months back -- here's my photos -- and now who knows when it'll be like that again.

Couple of coworkers aren't in today -- they're from north San Diego County.

I didn't realize this would hit so close to home here, but a friend of mine who lives in Edmonds is hosting her grandmother, age 87, who had escaped her home (if it's still there now :( ) in Ramona in SD county. She managed to fly up here to get away from the situation. Here's the txt I got from my friend:

grandma's at the house relaxed now and happy she's alive. my mom is flying in from boise tonight to see her and make sure she's comfortable while i'm off to school. it was really hard this morning. I freaked out because grandma was missing this morning. WHERE IS SHE? I found her outside in the rain just standing there with her arms out. she's really old and shouldn't even be keeping her arms raised. obviously she shouldn't be outside in cold wet weather she's not used to. so i brought her in and she was just saying SO FULL OF LIFE. RAIN. THIS IS ALL I WANT. ITS NOT ASH ITS RAIN RAIN RAIN. I LOVE YOU. she started breaking down in tears. I ESCAPED HELL. THIS IS HEAVEN. i started crying too. i brought her inside. she's fine now.

I didn't bother asking if she knew how her grandmother's house was. It's pointless to ask that now.

Laurel, Thursday, 25 October 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

this shit is not cool

gabbneb, Thursday, 25 October 2007 04:29 (eighteen years ago)

All still grinding away in OC -- the fire is starting to reach the Cleveland National Forest, and if it breaks out fully there, all the smoke in the air so far will have been as nothing in comparison.

Today has been even crappier already -- at least yesterday I could see the sun rise. The smoke is so thick it's essentially fog-level visual quality now. Aside from one on-campus errand and a quick run to get some lunch to go I plan on hunkering down in the library all day at work.

This map is the best one for tracking the OC/Santiago fire -- if you click on the satellite or hybrid option, you can see just how much mountainous terrain was involved. I can see a good chunk of this from UCI on a good day and it'll be nothing but black ash when the smoke clears.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 October 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

so we had been planning on buying a house or condo in the west-of-5 area later this year, or renting until conditions became a little more favorable. i wonder what all this is going to do to the housing / renting market and how this is going to break down across each geographical and socioeconomic "bracket"
