Simon Cowell to a cheery Christian wanting to bring love and joy to the world: "Okay, okay, I'll try to find something positive to say. I hated it - in a happy kind of way."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 September 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently Cowell and Fuller are going to court over the format being too close to Pop Idol for Fuller's liking. Could be the most interesting thing about it!

___ (___), Sunday, 12 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

trial of the century!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 12 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I assumed it was part of the Pop Idol franchise - it's just about identical, and has the two judges worth keeping from that.

SC again: "You've just put through a 60 year old who dresses like a fairy!"

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 September 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw some girl pleading yesterday. It was depressing.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

You should probably let her out of your cellar, Alba.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon says it's not time.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Louie, you can't DO THIS!!"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

that thing with louie and the girl was horrible. i can't believe things like that is shown on tv.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that was pretty rough! I absolutely loved the guy that was dressed up like John Travolta, how red was his face??

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it makes me almost sad that I have to go here looking for my saturday evening poignancy but poignancy it gives, especially in the 'between rich people' relationship of simon and sharon and in the auditions of the elderly.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I cried a bit tonight, at this.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I felt well sorry for that newlywed girl who they told to loose weight. I thought she was pretty.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 18 September 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Rowetta!!!

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 25 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rowetta...just Shaun without a penis" (Bez)

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 25 September 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
Tonight was the first public vote, and the act that I thought was much the best and gave an absolutely storming performance tonight (best I've seen in any of these shows, possibly), apart from their lame name which may be Voices With Soul, were one of the bottom two, so had to perform again and the judges had to choose who to throw out. Given that this group were in Louis's team, and the other singer was Sharon's, that left it up to Simon, who at least made the right choice.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 23 October 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I voted for G4, they're brilliant. I am going off Rowetta a bit.

Tabby is appalling and must go.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 23 October 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to the same school as one of the members of G4 - we were both in the school band.

(also, Verity lives in the same village as me)

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 23 October 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

What was he like at school?

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 23 October 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve is rubbish. Rowetta or G4 will win.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 23 October 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, do other people like G4?

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like them, no - I think they are good at it, but I suspect that theirs is a novelty appeal that will fade as the weeks go on.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 24 October 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It isn't fading for me yet. But I'm not sure what they would be like if not doing covers.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 24 October 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Hasn't Cowell got his own opera boyband sideproject though? I doubt he'll be best pleased if they have rivals. I'm guessing he's voting them off at the first opportunity.

Chairman ROFLMAO (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 24 October 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like any of them.

tabby to go, quickest.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 24 October 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I don't like any of them either, but then I never do on these things. It's like watching sausages being made - very nice end product, but I don't want to see the shit they started out as.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 24 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone on this program is so defensive and louis walsh is insufferable.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 24 October 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What was he like at school

I didn't really know him very well, aside from sitting opposite him in the school band. He was two years below me, and played some kind of tuba-like instrument. The main reason I knew of him (and realised it was him on the telly) is that our fathers work together.

(he was the one on the far left when they were performing yesterday)

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 24 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate Thornton introduced 'Without You' by saying "Originally recorded by Harry Nilsson but made famous by Mariah Carey..." - Nilsson's version was #1 for five weeks, Mariah Carey's for four. Rotten song to choose for a petite girl, but she carried it off very well. Rowetta was excellent too, predictably. 2 To Go - awful name, dull performance. Verity improved but uninteresting. G4 absurd - very wrong song. Tabby obviously must go, though I did like last week when they claimed that a '70s style performance on a '60s song was very 2004. Steve improved, and more or less my kind of thing. Voices With Soul were disappointing, I thought, but still good. They should be safe, along with Cassie and Rowetta - any of the other five could be down at the bottom. Maybe G4's novelty will wear off, plus Verity? (I have a very bad prediction record on these things, I should add.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 30 October 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I was disappointed with G4 this week. It was a totally ridiculous song to pick, and I didn't like how they'd been dressed all casual (what's wrong with letting them wear suits?).

Tabby is so bad, I can't believe he's still in it. He does not rock, at all.

Steve IS Michael Bolton, which is really not my sort of thing at all, but I did think it was bad of Sharon to say that he wasn't black so why try to pretend he "has soul".

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 30 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That bit with Tabby and the little kids wqas just bizzare. Two 2 Go Should live up to their name soon. They're truly abhorrent.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 30 October 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the idea of Tabby rehearsing the "Thank you little man!"

I don't think Two 2 Go are any good either, they make everything sound so Disney. But it's just nice to see such good friends.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 30 October 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't think Steve was anything like as objectionable as Michael Bolton. And I maintain there were some truly GREAT white soul figures - Sharon's objection was drivel.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 30 October 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

G4's song choice was, indeed, ridiculous.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 30 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I still voted for G4, to keep them in. They seem clever and nice and genuinely creative, and I want to see more of them.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 30 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Missed the first show, just caught up with it on ITV2 and the first bit of the highlights show. Sharon Osborne exposed as ridiculous racist shockah! And also on ITV2 - SO"I don't think any of us are trying to play up the sympathy angle. SC"So you won't mention again how Cassie's "only 17"?" SO" I don't think that's got anything to do with it, she's very brave and the audience should recognise that." (The cameras panned off after the first SO bit and you had to listen hard.)

Anyway:

Should be in the bottom two - Tabby and 2ToGo
Will be - Verity and Voices With Soul

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 30 October 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What Sharon said wasn't racist, it was just stupid.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 30 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think associating traits with a racial type is intrinsically racist - whether flattering or not. Racism, by it's nature, cannot just mean objectionable things. If I say all black me are well-endowed, am I being racist or not?

Anyway, back to the show.

Verity went, perhaps unsurprisingly, despite it probably being her best performance yet.

What was going on with Rowetta after she found out the ranking? (She seems to think they're read out as ranked, and I don't think she wanted the choir and is blaming it for her not coming first?)
What about between Siman and Sharon at the final decision? And the cries from the audience for her to "be honest"?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 30 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Verity gone! The local paper will be very distraught - now they'll have to rely on G4 for the "local hero" angle.

(will let you know if I bump into her down the co-op or anything)

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 30 October 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly is the Simon/Verity 'thing' Rowetta has just hinted at? (fwiw I've seen it since probably the second audition - with maybe hints of it in the very first one - but thought I was imagining things, particularly since Simon's g/f is on X-tra Factor...)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 30 October 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon likes her, and was moved by the story of how her husband would never let her pursue a singing career, but now she's divorced and it's her last chance.

I really don't think there is anything sexual between them.

What did Rowetta say, exactly?

I disagree with you about racism, but I'm sure there are plenty of other threads about that.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 30 October 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Rowetta said on ITV2, in consoling her, "well, you've always got Simon", as if it were a future thing and not a current or past thing. Given Simon will cease being her manager after tonight, it seemed an odd choice of words. Plus her squeeze of his thigh seemed a little odd.

Racism - yes, I suppose you're right. It's for somewhere else.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 30 October 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, that is a bit strange.

I like Simon Cowell more in X-Factor, which is not to say I like him, but he seems to be nicer and more reasonable and less of a prat in this than other things.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 30 October 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate how 'confidence' is this season's reality tv buzzword - I want to imagine my popstars as ruthless automatons not normal normans. They should quit patronising Cassie too, she seems as self-assured as anyone on there.

Still want Rowetta to win most, then Cassie and couldn't care less about the rest. Oily Steve and 2 To Go to go pls thx.

Love how Louis is *so* the bad guy in this series, constantly getting booed, yet insists on repeating his mantra of "The public don't like YOU Simon". I like Simon a lot in this series.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Cassie really does have a lovely voice. I like Simon too in this series - he's generally right (in the context of the show, of course). My estimation of Sharon drops a notch every time she says 'fabulous', and her love for 'dirty' Tabby is inexplicble.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

her love for 'dirty' Tabby is inexplicble

OTM

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and waving that fucking horrible little dog around this show was particularly distasteful.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Roweta just chiefed it out there. Simply.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 6 November 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Don't go and make me do backing vocals for the Happy Mondays again. I don't want to do that".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 6 November 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

And now G4 do "Baby One More Time". Are they meant to be the new Me First and the Gimme Gimmes then?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 6 November 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear God, that's horrible. Make it go away!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that may mark the low point of reality pop to date. The fact that they have degrees makes it even worse.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Rowetta's performance was horribly stagey this evening. Cassie continues to grow on me - she seems very sweet.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot believe that Louis said about 2 to Go "This poor guy is BLIND, and he can sing, and play saxophone!" What was he thinking?

I voted for G4 again even though they were rubbish this week. Louis Walsh should be kept away from them, he's making them look more ridiculous every time.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

G4 - off.

Tabby: Missed him, what did he do?

Rowetta will win.

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Tabby did 'Addicted to Love'. Predictably dreadful.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

He did Addicted to Love. Horrible, but not nearly as horrible as G4 who were the worst thing ever.

(xpost)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaah, G4 were shocking! i had to hide behind a pillow during that!

ailsa yes!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The public votee will be between G4 and Cassie, I reckon.

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought G4 were really funny, but I don't think that was the intended reaction. I'm not quite sure what the intended reaction was.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

.. and the judges wouldn't dare vote cassie off.

G4: The intended reaction is the same as your dancing dad. "Hey, they are all thinking "wow what a cool dad" "No, dad, they're laughing at you not with you"

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope they don't get vote out, anyway. I want to see what pop classic they'll be turning into a comic tour-de-force next week.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I should stop clinging to the memory of G4 being good...

No one was that good this week, compared with past perfomances, I thought.

Tabby is still repulsive.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanna see them do Tour de france or The Model!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god i can so hear them do The Model right now.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Boombastic would be good.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

They'll be doing "somewhere over the rainbow" prob.

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just been watching it on video. G4 were hysterically awful - will Louis manage to choose an even worse song for them next week?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 6 November 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Voices With Soul must be safe, Tabby is bizarrely popular so probably safe too, as is Rosetta after a very strong performance. Steve was too forgettable, Two To Go were hopeless, Cassie out of her depth with dancing while covering Aretha (I know hers wasn't the original, but you know what I mean). Any two of that last three and G4, I would think.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 6 November 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The public votee will be between G4 and Cassie, I reckon. .. and the judges wouldn't dare vote cassie off.
-- mark grout (mark.grou...) (webmail), November 6th, 2004. (link)

Of course, I could be wrong...

I thought Louie ended up voting against 2 to go as he'd run out of ideas as to how to 'promote' them.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly because Simon's comment about them being a cabaret act in Magaluf was so OTM it wasn't even funny. I wanted Voices with Soul to stay because, although they weren't very good on the night, there's more potential with them.

They need some work on their movement though - they looked like a herd of elephants clattering onto the stage.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually thought 2 to go were one of the less horrible acts last night.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the problem with VOS is that they kinda overdo their songs as they get to the ending. its like they have a nice build up then suddenly ROOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 8 November 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont like how sharon keeps going on about white soul singers being dud, thats bullshit. that guy did oversoul it last week when he did that simply red song, but this week he was good. and her claim that her dad was connected to 'real' soul singers like chuck berry and jerry lee lewis so she knows what soul is is BS too, chuck berry and jerry lee werent soul artists. shes talking out her fat overpaid arse.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 8 November 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Last week eveyryone was awful. this week most were decent, i thought. g4 or tabby to fuck off please.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 13 November 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I'd go along with that entirely.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, did Rowetta do Macarthur Park - I just turned over to hear Sharon going on about cakes in the rain.

Tabby is horrid.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I have given up on G4, I think.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweet Jesus, who is voting for Tabby? He's irredeemably annoying.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"you're singing about FOOD"

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I admit I never knew what that song was about, but I always realised it made no sense as a song about food.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

wrong choice! Louis walsh is a bitter little cunt.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ahem.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Some girls in my Spanish class voted for Tabby. They think he's hot.

G4 had a lucky escape. I liked VWS.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So VWS went, yeah? Harsh, this was the first week they were even half decent.

I admit I never knew what that song was about

Me neither, but what was that thing where Rowetta said she knew what it was about but couldn't talk about it on telly? Drugs? filthy sex? I really need to know now.

She nailed it too, I was surprised Sharon and Louis were complaining about the song being inappropriate, it was GREAT for her. She frequently reminds me of (and I think could ultimately be as good as) Shirley Bassey.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Rowetta totally crushed the melody of Macarthur Park, and in that sense perhaps Shirley Bassey is a suitable comparison. I don't really like any of them though, so as long as it isn't Tabby I don't mind who wins.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what Rowetta was on about. The cake is a metaphor for a failed relationship. I can't find any rude interpretation of the lyrics anywhere on the internet.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 14 November 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was my assumption of what it was on about too, but I assumed I was wrong.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 14 November 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it was webb's answer to the san francisco love-in. its actually about a kid off his head on acid and everything is melting. i asked one of the webb brothers. it was a huge song during the acid-baggy days of manchester. world of twist did a cover of it. that's probably why she was into it.

doomie x, Sunday, 14 November 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Tabby will sail through to the final on account of sewing up the Irish vote (like That Scots girl in the last pop idol). Despite the fact that he's prob the most rubbish thing ever, though he isn't as punchable as Steve.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 14 November 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently Richard Curtis has asked Steve to sing on the soundtrack of his next film. Make of that what you will.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 14 November 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it's so lame. although the "x factor tour" with all nine acts in one arena will surely outshine any gig ever!

lucifer, Sunday, 14 November 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

rowetta needs to learn that she doesnt need to roar each song out, singing it would do just fine. she goes into climatic opera mode within seconds.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 14 November 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 14 November 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Jonathan G4!!!

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 27 November 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought G4 were ace tonight, they picked really good songs. Rowetta was fantastic as ever. But really, there aren't enough words in the dictionary (or even not in the dictionary) to allow me to fully voice my hatred and revulsion for the asswipe that is Tabby. GO AWAY!!!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 27 November 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought G4 were terrible, and I think they'll be in the bottom two - probably along with Steve, who had a bad start on song one, and seemed uneasy with the second. I like Steve - he's the kind of singer I like best, although he clearly isn't in the Al Green class - but I can't see Rowetta being in any trouble, and Tabby is, bizarrely, hugely popular.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 27 November 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah well, Steve vs Tabby final then.

Tabby covering "More Than Words" was both the most obvious and most painful thing in history.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 27 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe that Rowetta got voted out! I'm really surprised. The two I have disliked most all along are in the last three! I'll be supporting Steve, but I don't really think he'll win. I think Tabby will get it, have one hit and then very swiftly vanish.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 27 November 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god. G4 wil win. You know it.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 28 November 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Tabby will win, then vanish (hopefully), but Steve will have the better career. Steve will be the Liberty X to Tabby's Hear'say. Or something. I hope. G4 will be trotted out at football matches to do crowd-pleasing renditions of anthems for a while. This future for them panned out in front of my eyes about ten seconds after they opened their mouths last night. There are a mob up here in Scotland called Caledon (I think) that always come out to do G4-ish renditions of Flower of Scotland before rugby and football internationals, and Celtic have had a group called the Three Irish Tenors to do Fields of Athenry and You'll Never Walk Alone in a similar vein. This could be G4's niche in England. I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy an album of their stuff. Then again, people buy Jamie Cullum albums, so what do I know?

Rowetta was really annoying after she went off last night, but Kate Thornton's attempts at controlling her were laughable.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 28 November 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

People bought Il Divo. I think they would buy G4.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 28 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed the shows last night, how did Rowetta react to being kicked out? I'm totally stunned that she has been, she was the only act who had real potential as a long-lasting star. Shame on you ITV viewer voters..

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 28 November 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Suddenly, she seemed way too overconfident. Before she lost, obv.

Tabby? I don't hate him, but it seems like the audience are loving the songs he's doing rather than him doing them.

I hope Steve gets it.

The only time I've been impressed this whole series was with Cassie's final version of "All by myself". Doubtless we'll never see her again.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 November 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Rowetta before she got chucked out: “Vote for me because every week I have given 100% and it would be boring next week if I’m not in.”

The public decided that the show was boring even with her in it and preferred to watch BBC employees being forced to learn dancing as a stipulation of getting their contracts renewed.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 29 November 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Who the fuck is voting for G4? They make me cringe. I'm not watching it any more.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I would guess it's the mums and grannies who are the programme's major viewing demographic.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 29 November 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. And the rason the ratings are falling is they are all watching "Strictly Come Dancing" for the most part of Sat Night.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Heehee, I voted for G4, Madchen. I am sorry.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

There's intense speculation in various other interweb quarters that there will actually be a three artist final after all - that at the end of next week's show the phonelines will open for you to invite somebody who has already been sent home back as the best loser.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 29 November 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

What, a "revive Rowetta" campaign?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 November 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hasn't it worked out so terribly convenient that each judge/mentor has one act apiece in the final three? Not fixed at all, is it?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 29 November 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon Cowell : "Louie louie louie"

He's not good on his garage punk.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Cowell ever quite got over the death of Alma Cogan.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 29 November 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, neither have i.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am very suspicious too, Marcello.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Do we not have a thread for this year yet?

Wee Ant Murray off Brookside is all growed up and in the finals! Plus, erm, some other stuff too!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

I started a thread but it was swiftly neglected.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Saturday, 30 September 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I did a search but I couldn't find it. Sorry.

Anyhow, wheelchair-user girl is going to win.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

I think afro bloke's in with a chance. Actually, he might not win the competition, but if I were to pick one to have a successful recording career it would be him.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Saturday, 30 September 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'd pick the dolly rockers.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 30 September 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

I like Afro and the Brookside bully-killer kid, wheelchair woman's voice was nowhere near strong enough and Sharon seemed pretty patronising putting her through. I also don't like way she talks about wanting people to look past her disability, but then doesn't seem to talk about anything else in her life at all so that those of us who did look past it are brought back to focusing on it, and just in case we weren't concentrating on it enough the editors remind us of it every episode by showing her talking about it again. It's just going to be like Michelle McManus again.

The Dollyrockers deserve plus points for the matching outfits.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 30 September 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

The other thread

Big Brother 2006 is over. But our souls will still not be clean, because now we have...THE X-FACTOR

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 30 September 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

The wheelchair woman is faking it.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 30 September 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

The singing I mean. She has mini-speakers in the arm rest.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 30 September 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! It'd be so great if she got through to the finals, won it and then promptly got up out of her wheelchair and announced she'd been faking the disability thing.

I like Ben (? I think that's his name) the long-haired gravelly-voiced one.

C J (C J), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

thw wheelchair woman's difficult past has included a quite large part in the second series of ch4's The Book Group.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

I hate this shit. Is it a talent contest, or a "my legs don't work" contest?

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Sunday, 1 October 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

The young scared northern lad who says "I love singing you know" for teh win!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 1 October 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

Simon's group is absolutely terrible. what's part-time-model ashley's secret? i'd say he can't sing a note but that would be a huge understatement. the one girl who can sing is very very good though.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 7 October 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

actually the girl from glasgow is very good too. they're definatly making alot of the fact that her mum died but i really think you can heard the emotion of that in her voice. it' really is quite moving.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 7 October 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

i can't watch this anymore as the slow-motion hugging got too much to bear. has that decreased now they're doing the groups thing?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 7 October 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

yes it's quite nauseating. obviously they find it hard to reduce any of the groups down to a heart tugging story but there's nothing else there unfortunately.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 7 October 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

Roffle @ the music going REALLY over the top when Sean was talking about how much he wanted to get through. I've decided I like Ashley and the ugly boy band. And maybe Ray.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 7 October 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

ian curtis to win!

probably him. spooky dude.

the classic sounds of the seventh of january 1998 (Enrique), Sunday, 8 October 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, the one who was knocked out on last night's show.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 8 October 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Spooky dude? Do you mean the one in Eton Road with the beautifully plucked eyebrows and the indie hair and the really pointy cheekbones?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 8 October 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, what ailsa said.

the classic sounds of the seventh of january 1998 (Enrique), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

ie not knocked out, but almost.

the classic sounds of the seventh of january 1998 (Enrique), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

I think Onimo and aldo are talking about the teeny wee lad that looks like he would burst out crying if someone said boo to him and therefore has no place whatsoever on a show about confidence and star quality.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

Have we all seen Kerry's attempt at getting on the Eurovision Song Contest?!?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocneLhuQAhM

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey, where did you find that, ailsa?

Don't get me wrong, I do quite like Kerry and think she has a nice voice, but what I can't understand is all the sobbing and blubbing she's been doing on the camera about how she's doing all this as a thank-you to her long-suffering Mum who's always been there for her, to prove to her that she can achieve something. Because if she's been yodelling in the canyon of love, then surely she's had some kind of semi-professional singing career already. I'd hate to think the tears were all being put on to tug the public's heart-strings. I'd really hate that.

C J (C J), Sunday, 8 October 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey, where did you find that, ailsa?

Those creepy folks over at Digital Spy. It's amazing what rubbish I'll read when I'm bored and hung over.

(She's an actress too, as jed_ mentioned upthread she was in a few eps of the Book Group as the girlfriend of the wheelchair dude - Kenny, was it?)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 8 October 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

Well, if Rowetta can enter and reasonably, why not a bit part actor?

(must.. not .. sing.. Stump.. song...!)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 9 October 2006 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

no reason why not although they did disqualify one group becasue they were professionally ut together. what's the diff?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 9 October 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

I think it was more because they were already under contract, rather than just professionally put together.

C J (C J), Monday, 9 October 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

no reason why not although they did disqualify one group becasue they were professionally ut together. what's the diff?

Eh? How did Ut get on the X-Factor???? Why wasn't I watching?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 9 October 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

I don't mind the fact she's a bit part actor (so is wee Ant Murray off Brookside). I do mind when she goes "oh, I've had such a hard life and I need this for my mum, to make her proud, to show I can achieve something, blah blah, weep wail" when she's nearly been at the Eurovision Song Contest and been on a fairly-well-received Channel 4 comedy.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yes but there's always last month's Visa card payment to take into account.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 06:30 (nineteen years ago)

Why, what did she buy last month?

C J (C J), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 06:51 (nineteen years ago)

Well, it's the repeated 'phone calls about last month's Visa card payment which are probably of more immediate concern.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 07:01 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! It'd be so great if she got through to the finals, won it and then promptly got up out of her wheelchair and announced she'd been faking the disability thing.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

She might go for Do You Really Want To Hurt Me instead.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

Or one of the others might do the Michael Jackson classic, "She's out of that weelchair"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

"And it cuts like a knife..."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 07:56 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit - Leona was INCREDIBLE.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 28 October 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE SCOTTISH BLOCK VOTE.

Leona oversung it in a Mariah stylee, in my opinion.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 28 October 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

you think so? i thought it seemed very natural. i usually loathe that mariah oversinging thing. she managed to do that without making it nauseating or show-offy.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 28 October 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the first couple of twiddles were pretty natural, but if got worse from there.

Leona is probably my favourite still, though.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 28 October 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I missed Leona as I was flicking between this and Strictly Come Dancing. Lumbering old Peter Schmeichel doing the paso doble in a see-through top = comedy gold.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 28 October 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 28 October 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, Ashley and wee Ant Murray to go this week, I think. Or Kerry.

Robert and Dionne, I think.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 28 October 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

i feel the same. least like: ashley, macd brothers & robert.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 28 October 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Dionne needed a hard luck story, like Robert whose hard luck story seems to be that he, uh, has a son he needs to look after.

I can see Louis throwing out Ashley just to piss off Simon.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 28 October 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

jed is tom re leona. i don't like mariahness at all but she was fucking amazing rly.

robert is awful.

benrique (Enrique), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

The Macdonald Brothers look like Ant and Dec, blended into Antdec and Antdec.

They sing like Robson and Robson.

They will win because
1) They are scots
2) No-one else cares.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

The dark-haired MacDonald looks really like a friend of mine. They will not win because Ben will win (and Eton Road will come second). Robert has a pleasant-enough singing voice, but he is an irritating twat. I think that is basically what is wrong with this show = pleasant-enough singing voices are NOT the X Factor.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

I never get to see the whole show (better things to do etc), is the Wheelchair woman still on? Any good?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, she's away. And she was shite anyway.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

Dionne and Wheelchair Woman both voted off on Saturday.

Dionne's weird Tina Turner style of bandy-legged walking irritated me. She couldn't stop a pig in a corridor.

Rod Stewart is on our side.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

I saw something on telly over the weekend about Ashley's family - he's got an uncle (?) who's a professional boxer and some other relative who's a football player. They were banging on about The Incredibly Talented Mackenzie Family.

C J (C J), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

tony bennett kind of rowed back from thinking dionne was the best singer.

benrique (Enrique), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Tony Bennett seemed generally very odd and confused about a lot of things.

C J (C J), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, Rod. Man, you should be allowed to say what you think!

Rather than be like Lionel Richie, walk around going "You are really talented, Pffffffffffff!!"

Tony Bennet gets a free pass though. No-one's expecting anyone to come up to his standard.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

lionel richie was on crack though. bennett can do what he likes. i felt sorry for him.

benrique (Enrique), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

Well, compare the "should be nice really" attitude of these guys (Rod, Lionel, Tony) with Daniel Debdingtrousers on "Fame Academy" where he told the guy that the girl Alex was best, to his face. Like "oh really, luckyboy?"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'm very much looking forward to the rofflez as Ben tries to growl his way through an Abba song next week.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

He sort of reminds me of a less painful "Michael Bolton", i.e. not too unpleasant.

Unfortunately, if I try to recall his performance, it's exactly the same as a painful MB.

They always use "Mr Bojangles." Does Cowell own the copyright or something?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 30 October 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm guessing it's because Robbie Williams did it, so it's popular with teh kids. I thought Robert made not a bad job of it, but I seem to be alone in this.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 30 October 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Robbie fucking Williams...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 30 October 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

I came in from the pub to be confronted by the MacDonald Brothers giving one of the most inept performances in the history of X Factor (although picking one of Abba's most umpty-tum songs didn't help).

WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 4 November 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

"Being a one-trick pony" vs "making the song your own"

I can't tell the difference.

Mind you, I briefly turned over to TOTP "2, not 1" to see All Saints lumpenly shuffling about, looking for all the world like four mums who had agreed to do a turn at the primary school end-of-year disco to a song they barely knew. So I obviously don't understand VER KIDS TODAY and what they like.

PS - How the hell has Dan Perry NOT shown up on a thread where someone is singing about yodelling in the Canyon of Love?!!!

smee (smee), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that "they have the scottish vote" argument always annoys me. for on thing we're like less than 1/10th of the population and for another there were actually 3 scottish contestants lat week, one of whom was in a wheelchair and she got evicted!

(drunk)

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure there are teenagers up and down the country voting for the McDonalds. They are fairly good-looking young lads = they get votes. Not just from teh Scottishes. To suggest that Scottish people just vote for Scottish people even if not-Scottish people are better = patronising in the extreme. I mean, it's not like they are actually *representing* the country or anything, they just happen to be from here. And, yeah, surely it would have kept Kerry in as well.

jed OTM, even if he is drunk :-)

Talking of rotten yet inexplicably popular X Factor brothers, Journey South are switching on the Christmas lights in Paisley this year. Coo.

Oh, OK, Simon said that too. Having missed Leona last week, I concur with everyone else that's she great. Can't see past her, Ben or Eton Road for the win. In fact, that's yer top three right there. I'd put money on it, if I had any.

Yeah, I think Louis' "This is the X Factor not the swing factor" schtick is because he's a bit scared of the kids AND the grannies all loving Ray but he can't think of anything bad to say about him. Don't recall him going "this isn't cod-operatic bollocks factor" to G4 every week, for example.

What I would say is that the swing version of Waterloo worked better than I thought it would, but Ray isn't a good enough singer to carry it off.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 5 November 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i thought it was a decent version but i find Ray a bit scary.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 5 November 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

Next to Ashley, the MacDonald Brothers are fantastic, ouch ouch ouch :-/

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 5 November 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

totally agree. he was brutal but he has put in worse performances than that one.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 5 November 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

Simon burbling on about Billy Ocean, and how he has no relevance in todays music scene.

O RLY?

Not like Abba/Lionel/Stewart/Bennet, etc amiroite?

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 5 November 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Money offered for ABBA reunion tour: $1 billion
Lionel Richie had a #15 album last month, Tony B's at #15 right now.
Rod Stewart was at #4 last week.

Billy Ocean, on the other hand, is landlord for a series of low rent houses around the Tottenham/Harringey area. Apparently he's an asshole to his tennants.

dommy p is alright WHICH IS A LOT MORE THAN I CAN SAY ABOUT A LOT OF PEOPLE (Dom, Sunday, 5 November 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Ray is scary because of his CURLY GIRLIE SIDEBURNS! Why has nobody taken a razor to them?!!

smee (smee), Monday, 6 November 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

what's the horrible personal story that's been leaked about robert?

benrique (Enrique), Monday, 6 November 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

I'm note sure. There was something in the press recently about him having had a sister who died a couple of years ago, thus he is coping with horrible personal sadness etc etc.

C J (C J), Monday, 6 November 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

If Robert is the kid, his dad was in pris and his mum on the booze sort of thing.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 6 November 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

robert is the chico; the kid is ray.

benrique (Enrique), Monday, 6 November 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

I've only seen Nikitta and Eton Road, but I take it back about the MacDonald Brothers last week. That Eton Road performance was far and away the most inept thing I've seen in this competition since it started. Including the audition shows.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 11 November 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

There's some kind of cocaine rumour regarding Robert floating around the web somewhere.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Saturday, 11 November 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't the cocaine stuff about Ben in the end? Robert had a secret sister or something.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 11 November 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I thought the cocaine stuff was about Ben. And the sex addict stuff. Robert just has family issues, including a sister who died young.

He was good tonight, as was Leona. MacDonalds merely awful this time. Nikitta not kidding when she sang "when I'm bad, I'm oh so bad" - what was that last note like? Ray still playing his gimmick, but entertainingly. Ben simply dreadful.

On performances, I'd say it's between Ben and Eton Road. I suspect, however, it'll be Robert and Nikitta at the bottom.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 11 November 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

aldo is right, Eton Road were the worst thing in the show so far. completely embarrassing. Leona was incredible: best song of the series and Robert, to my immense surprise, was pretty bloody good!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 November 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

The little thumbs up one of the McD brothers did at the start of the show made me want to stab them. Then nuke Scotland just to be on the safe side.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Saturday, 11 November 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

WRONG.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 November 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Roffle at Eton Road! And at Simon's face when the MacDonalds went through at the expense of his two!

Nikitta was pretty poor and probably deserved to go. Ben to go next please, his growling is annoying me now (yeah yeah, not going to happen, I know)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 November 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

And LOL at Ray taking his jacket off and throwing it into the crowd! You're only a wee kiddie, stop trying to be all sexy and adult-like (as if jacket-throwing is actually sexy in the first place). Also, you dance like Shaking Stevens.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 November 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

Every time Ray comes on I want to shout "WHY DON'T YOU LIKE RUBBISH FAUX PUNK BANDS LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO, WHAT THE FUCK'S WRONG WITH YOU YOU WEIRDO?"

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Sunday, 12 November 2006 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

Watch him next week, it'll be all Panic! At The Sands Hotel.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 12 November 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and Simon stormed off the live show again after a drunk Sharon mauled him half to death and licked his nipples why he tried to explain what went wrong. It was also revealed Simon chose the MacDonald Brothers song because Louis had no idea what to do with them and they were ready to go, and that next week Louis' first idea is to have them do a Pussycat Dolls song. With bagpipes.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 12 November 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

OK, please tell me you aren't making that up.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 November 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

I am not making that up. If you can watch the Xtra Factor Aftershow at some point then you should, it all happens in the first ten minutes.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 12 November 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

The Pussycat Dolls with bagpipes thing was tongue in cheek, surely? There was apparently footage shown on one of the midweek shows last week of Eton Rd rehearsing Dontcha (changing GF to BF, the wimps) and it was rumoured they were going to sing that last night. Louis mentioned that one of his acts may do a PCD song next week, and Simon (I think) joked about what a McDonald version would be like.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Sunday, 12 November 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

So, Wee Ray was in Eton Road when they were put together for the show, but dropped in favour of entering solo at the last minute? Hmm. Almost enough intrigue for me to care.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Eton Road, early winner of the "OW MINE EARS" award for the night.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Robert was quite good.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit they are TERRIBLE. i'll *just* choose sore ears over the wave of nausea Ray gave me though.

xp

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

He was, yes. I think he's got a great voice. (xpost - Robert, that is)

Ray = meh. He's better as a one-trick pony.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Leona can't not win this, can she?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

wow, this is the first time i have watched this and leona is properly great!

the others were all rather horrific.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

Ben doing With A Little Help From My Friends in a Joe Cocker style = SURPRISE!!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

Lex - find Leona doing Summertime a few weeks ago on youtube.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

that version of 'with a little help from my friends' was VILE.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

yes Lex, leona was good tonight but the last few weeks were astonishing. these will knock your socks off:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbVqs5BfRFc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AgFVvqvyJg

i think tonight might actually have been her worst performance but still leagues ahead of everything else.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to Lex's views on the MacDonald Brothers.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

You bastards. I saw this thread and switched on tv and it's that fucking horrid song.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'm curious as to the subcurrent of "I wonder what The Lex/Alex in NYC/Geir thinks of this". Are the opinions of the people actually contributing not good enough?

pscott (elwisty), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

i'm interested to hear Lex's positive opinions (of Leona, for example) but his negative ones are all the same, so no.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I asked for that! (xpost)

(but The Lex is on this thread and contributing, so it's not quite the same)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

That band that did the Beatles song last week, that was the worst thing I've ever seen.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm curious as to the subcurrent of "I wonder what The Lex/Alex in NYC/Geir thinks of this". Are the opinions of the people actually contributing not good enough?

Here goddamn here!

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

)pscott's quoting me from somewhere else, btw)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Given the McD brothers' stange immunity to being chucked off, it's either Ray or Eton Road to go tonight.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

wow those two leona performances were incredible! her 'sorry seems to be the hardest word' = best version i have ever heard of that song. she's very endearing, too. i love the fact that she can actually give songs light and shade.

were the macdonald brothers those twats who did 'love is all around'? ugh. what is the sodding point?

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

It's just a bit of fun, let's be cool.

pscott (elwisty), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think anyone really gets the point of the MacDonald Brothers.

Apparently they are usually a fiddes and accordions type Scottish traditional band. I really REALLY wish they *had* done The Pussycat Dolls with bagpipes.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

i'm happy to say this:

Lex OTM.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

!!!!!!!!!!!

i am GLAD THEY DIDN'T.

there seemed to be no discernible difference between their performance and eg me idly singing along to songs while washing up. it was just so lacklustre.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

xp

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

is cowell telling the truth about people in america getting excited about leona?

a quick google reveals that she's getting compared to m carey and w houston, but i think the closest point of reference is far more obvious - beyoncé.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I guess they are expressing their interest directly to Simon.

Let's face it, now she doesn't actually need to win.

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Likely scenario: The McDonald bros winthe whole thing, No-one buys any of their records apart fromthe first single, and Simon knocks the whole X-Factor thing on the head.

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

but if she didn't win she might never reach the heights Shane Ward did!

actually Shane had so much potential...

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

There are many acts which did not win but went on to have careers without having "XFactor" or "PopIdol" or "FameAcademy" always stamped on it.

Lemar/Javine/(helpmeoutsomeone..)

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 18 November 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

MacDonalds still in! World is strangely drawn to averageness!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, Louis is CRYING LIKE A GURL!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

huh???

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe it watched this results program. So they stayed in because they provide comedy?
Fair enough.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

that was the craziest decision so far.

actually the fighting from the judges this season is massively DUD.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Simon saves Eton Road. Shame, I thought Robert was much better. WRONG DECISION SIMON!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

yeah Robert was ahead then Eton Road sang even worse second time round so there's no logic to that.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

THAT WAS AN OUTRAGE

Brian Emo (noodle vague), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

Also Simon said "I'm going to base this solely on the second performance". Eton Road shriek through a succession of mis-hit notes, Robert nails it for the second time, Simon says "I'm going to base this on who I think can go further in the competition".

He doesn't want Robert in because he could prove more of a threat to his Chosen Special One. Eton Road will never win this.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

On a show that is basically non-stop dishonest bullshit, that was the worst.

Brian Emo (noodle vague), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to pick my words carefully and just say that Robert doesn't fit into Cowell's teenpop template.

Brian Emo (noodle vague), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

i actually don't think robert is much of a thread considering he's been in the bottom 2 more times than not (i think?).

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

3 times out of 6

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

I still think he's one of the best singers on the show, and should do alright for himself anyway.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

still, it was a very wrong decision. Robert started off trying to fill sharon's wacky chico role but has been good the last two weeks.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

but then westlife have had 14 number ones, apparently, so what does any of it matter? i'm off to drink some booze.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 November 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

robert is fucking awful guys, every time.

simon was otm.

benrique (Enrique), Monday, 20 November 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

The whole problem with this show is that the Friday night prime-time TV watching demographic is completely different from the singles buying demographic! Teenage girls don't stay in on Friday watching telly, and mums don't buy singles. That's why the McDonald brothers and other novelty acts stay in, why front runners like Maria Lawson get booted out early, why Michelle McManus and Shane Ward both won the show and then tanked afterwards.

ledge (ledge), Monday, 20 November 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

It's on Saturday.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 20 November 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, same difference!

ledge (ledge), Monday, 20 November 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

Even the producers are claiming that Scotland only votes for Scottish people, or that Scottish people only get through because of Scottish votes. Or something. Use other excuses, please.
