How to make yourself known on ILX.....

So, you start up on here, you are a name (or pseudonym) amongst many, and no-one really knows you from Adam. So you have two ways of going.

1) Make loads of postings that express your individuality, viewpoints, and follow up on FAPS so your visibility is maximised,

2) Specialise in a particular field, and post on a scheduled basis about said topic,

3) Do something daft/ridic/crazy that then has you labelled as "Oh xxx, (s)he's the one that ..............."

OK, that's three things...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

You're the one that what then?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

... I love the English language

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Specialise in a particular field, and post on a scheduled basis about said topic

Note to self: must post at least one computer related post every 72 hours.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

poor adam!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

way to success is surely a snappy username

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure is!

Alligator (caitlin), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i would be flattered if people got adam and me confused. adam is cool!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Should *I* be flattered if people get you and me confused, though?

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i'm not cool.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been posting here for over a year and I still feel incredibly anonymous. I don't think I'm notorious for anything except posting try-hard posey pics of myself.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i've heard peeing on yourself is a good way to gain notoriety.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

.. which prompted this thread...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Being a complete twat to everyone else seems to make you very popular on here.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

kate, you're the one with the wicked makeup and stuff, right? every time you post a picture, i think 'oh my god, that's so amazing! i wish i had the patience and creativity to do that!'

sorry, i was going to say that on the photo thread and forgot, so i thought i'd add it here...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost. i am stupid.

being a complete twat makes you very popular in real life too!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! Thanks. Most of the time I can't be bothered with the whole makeup thing, then I get bored and go crazy. I'm glad I'm memorable for something at least :)

xpost

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's human nature to feel as though you're not popular or well known. I've always tried to take ILX as I find it and I've no idea if I'm well known / regarded or not. Anything else is madness. Besides, I've been here a couple of years now, it doesn't change that much....

Matt (Matt), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin, this is true

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

haha xpost whenever you post i imagine you sitting at the computer wearing a wig and crazy eye makeup.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ste i don't remember you ever being very popular on here..

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(see what i did there??????)

(KIDDIN'! BTW)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd really rather be less know. And therefore less hated, but then again, that probably wouldn't make a difference.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

You're hated? Really? I find that hard to believe.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

you're not hated are you kate? i always saw you as one of the ilx originals?

ha xpost

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sorry, it's a running joke, actually, that everybody on the interweb haaaaaaaaaates me, thus getting to a point about five or six years ago where there was a slogan "Don't Hate Kate" with t-shirts and a band named after it and everything. I guess that's a good schtick.)

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

haha xpost whenever you post i imagine you sitting at the computer wearing a wig and crazy eye makeup

Hahahaha, nah. I'm usually a no-make-up, wild unkept brows, pimply girl. I'm actually starting to think i was a drag queen in a former life.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Kate! My name is Kate too and when I was in grade six the girls in my class made t-shirts that said "We hate kate". It must be something in the name.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I had the idea, when that Tina Turner biopic was first out, of getting "I like Ike" t-shirts printed. Never got round to it tho.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just cause it rhymes so nicely, I guess, Kate. Though couldn't it have been "We Rate Kate" or even "We Date Kate" (as worn my superhott boys).

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

when I was in grade six the girls in my class made t-shirts that said "We hate kate".

OMG thats dreadful! Were they serious?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

BY superbott boys. Freudian slip there. Ha-HEM.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I've heard way too many annoying limericks that rhyme with kate :)

....

yeah they were serious. i've been a bit damaged ever since.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but INXS wrote an entire rap about us!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and then theres that ben folds five song......

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yar boo sucks to them then.

x-post

Matt (Matt), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

God, don't remind me...

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think there has ever been a "mark" song. Which is nice.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It could be worse. You could be called Jennifer!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I pity any Jesse's out there for Rick Springfields Jesse's Girl. That song sucks balls.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it so desperately needs to be "i wish that i was jesse's girl"

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Bell(e) Of St Mark'

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever it's called. I'm drunk and I hate that song anyway. When I was 18 I worked at Sizzler and I heard that song 15+ times a day.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, you got me. I did mean in a romantic way, but I'll have that one.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

There is 'Juliet And Mark' by Kevin Coyne and 'Mark'll Sink Us' by the Fall. (xpost)

4) Be from somewhere else than the UK/USA/Australia/New Zealand. Be sure to mention your home country and its quirky ways regularly.

Worked like a charm for me! Nowadays I don't even have to mention it. This is hardly an option for most of you though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I have rellies from finland. For some dumb reason it makes me feel like I have kind of affinty for you.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If I can come up with a word as repeatable as bukakke or a phrase as catchy as "fuck washing a hat", that will put me on the map.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i can reccomend it to anybody.

i mean, look at ma$e.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think I have next-to-no profile among 99% of the ilxers I haven't met. But as I've met like a hundred of something of you its hardly like I feel anonymous.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

sure, i'm Greg Kitten. if reading my email address is as far as you can go for detail, i guess i'm right.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Alternatively, start a random lust thread, or something else that makes you the hero of an ILX realtime thread. Everyone will be rooting for you and your profile will go through the roof even if you don't pull.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX realtime threads are the way to go. Obv. example being Gear!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC, you are unforgettable.

I think no one remembered me until I started going by "Homosexual II," and since I became whatever-my-name-is-now, no one remembers me again. SO SAD.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

4) Be from somewhere else than the UK/USA/Australia/New Zealand. Be sure to mention your home country and its quirky ways regularly.

I was hoping that this would work for Mississippi, but apparently Mississippi can just fuck right off.

Which reminds me, today's my one-year anniversary on ILX. Must find other thread...

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, *I* always remembered you. Even before I met you in real life. So there.

(xpost)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Homosexual II coincide with the time you started posting pictures of yourself, just out of interest?

(That's option three, be a girl and post a picture of yourself looking pretty)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

P.S. did you really wet yourself?

He did. I'm not convinced it was pee tho.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

4) Be from somewhere else than the UK/USA/Australia/New Zealand. Be sure to mention your home country and its quirky ways regularly.

I've mentioned my Newfoundland / Labrador roots about every third post. Hasn't done squat re: increased visibility, though.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What was that "technically, it was Paris Hilton" all about then?

there was no logic or reasoning behind that, i just wanted to say 'technically' 'paris hilton' in the same sentence.

AIM conversations are a good way of getting known. i would never have started posting as much as i do if it weren't for roxymuzac and aimchats.

Include the words "hey guys" frequently in your thread titles, and make many threads about articles of clothing, with concentration on novel man-garment interaction.

congratulations!!!!

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried on these shoes last night that sort of resembled shriveled white assholes, and I accidentally yelled out (to my sister, standing about 20 feet away), "DO THESE LOOK LIKE OLD BAG SHOES?" and a little old lady with a walker was right behind me. I felt I should have been shot on the spot.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, I only learned you were an audiophile/gearhead recently. Before that, my first impressions of you were mostly to do with They Might Be Giants and your awesome comics.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

your awesome comics
Martin, you created "Where's Waldo?"?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Who was it who said ILE is like having a tea party with your stuffed toys? I still think about that and laugh.

So long here and I still can't put a face to the names except for a few Australians, and of course the twin pillars of Momus and Ned (the anti-Momus).

It was ME! Yay!

"Sometimes posting to ILX feels a bit like lining up all your stuffed animals and having a pretend dinner party with them."

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, I only learned you were an audiophile/gearhead recently.

Heheheh... Well I have actually annoyed some people on guitar/effects/recording forums elsewhere on the net, so I am really careful about how and when that info gets out especially on a board which is patently not about that subject.

Plus, nobody likes an audiophile. (And I'm not as bad as many thing. Usually I'm in the school of thought that goes "Does it sound good to you? Okay, then.")

Also, thanks. Here's hoping compliments of that nature get me off my ass and onto creating more comics... ;)

I thought about posting something about Jon, but I'd figured we should just wait for him and he could do it way better than I.

Be careful about making your name in association with stuffed animals, adam.

dave225,
I know you for your good sense of humor, your dislike of certain effluvium-losing jambands and your excellent metaphoric use of a certain Mustachioed Man Versus Melon entertainer (see impersonations thread), in particular during the Iggy vs. the Corrs controversy.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Specialise in a particular field, and post on a scheduled basis about said topic

Oh hey! Did you know that Duran Duran were almost going to sign to Phonogram? Yeah, there was a huge bidding war back in 1980 between them and EMI to sign the band, but the band chose EMI because they were "hugely patriotic" (Nick's words, IIRC) at the time and wanted an English-based label with very English connotations, e.g. The Beatles. They have since regretted this decision, BTW.

(also: TS: Dave Gahan vs. Simon Le Bon )

Samantha Baker (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My field of specialisation is Gary Numan, so I just wait around for those threads.

One really annoying thing I've found is when you post something you think is funny and someone else comes back with 'that's not funny'. Why don't they just not laugh? That's what I do.

I do think Matt DC is OTM re "I think it's human nature to feel as though you're not popular or well known." I don't think too many people really give a damn about me over here and I think I'm getting to the point where it really wouldn't bother me all that much either way, really. I'm just stupid, insignifcant little me, you know? Miss "No One Special Unless You Want Duran Trivia And Then She'll Burst Forth With Reams Of Information". Miss I think she's harped on A Certain Subject for a bit, you know. (Even though I really haven't listened to the band's music in a few months.)

(Speaking of AIM -- I'm surprised more of you aren't available late at night! That's the only time I can really get to chatting with people.)

Samantha Baker (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I want Adam to IM me as well. And then make awkward small talk. And then apologize and head off to do something more interesting. And then come back and do it again the next day. And to keep this up for several weeks. And then for several months. Until finally he builds up the courage to ask me to come to the Apple Pan Dowdy Cook-Off with him. At which point I'll say that I don't particularly like apple pan dowdy. And he'll say "oh" and it will be awkward. That, I think, would be beautiful.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

AIM bores me. I'd rather talk on the phone, actually. No offense to the people I've AIMed with of course, I'm speaking in a general sense. Meaning? Everyone I AIM with I'd rather just talk on the phone to.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

So.

I need a beer.

Does ILX dare me to drink a beer?

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe this thread is perhaps better suited for inviting such challenges.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, I totally would rather AIM then talk on the phone. I have nothing to say to a phone. Who wants to talk into an object? Typing is one thing, talking is another. I also don't like those new phone systems where you say "ground shipment" instead of pressing "3". That irks me, I usually try to get to an operator at that point or see if there's a website or maybe a competitor I can use.

Ned is known outside of ILX? For his spoken word albums, I hope.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to deal with that voice activated UPS system all the time, Chris and I sympathize with you there--i hate hate hate it. Even pressing numbers is better than having to talk to an automaton.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, I hate those voice systems, especially when I can be heard grunting "No," "Number three," or "Partially destroyed" all down the phone in a grating monotone, in the middle of a quiet office. Plus I hate the sound of my voice.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Dee plenty of people here give a damn about you! Aw, buck up woogums (etc etc). But I mean seriously, what kind of thing is that to say? You've made yourself known with your respectfulness and forthrightness and extremely clear writing. You've got thoughts that last longer than a sentence or two, and I think you're probably the most notoriously open-minded person around here.
