Attention London: Fancy an indie disco?

Hello everyone. This Friday I am DJing at Club Seal, upstairs at the Islington Academy, hopefully giving a bit of a popist twist to the night. Other DJs include my very good friends Gareth and Ollie, who some of you have met, and possibly Charlie #4, I don't know.

It would be very nice to see some of you there, especially if you are, say, coming down from Glasgow to go to a young person's dance event the following night.

The arrangement is the same as the last couple of times we've done this - ie meet over the road at the Red Lion from about 9ish. I have no idea what time I am on, as yet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 January 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly we're going away for the weekend, so i can't make this or vitalic. sorry matt.

everyone else should go, though, i only caught the last 15 mins or so of matt's set last time but it was great!

toby (tsg20), Monday, 17 January 2005 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

look, what's that over there? [points to horizon]
why, it's RUIN!

friday is my payday, which, as we know, is the best day of all...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 January 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anyone going to be in the pub, well, a lot earlier?

This Is Sarah Really, hello, Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

How much earlier is a lot earlier?

I won't be because I've got a couple of things to do at home first, and don't want to be paralytic by the time I actually get there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Although judging by Carsmile's post it looks like he intends to be, so I suspect others will follow.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Naaah, I'm not playing this week. I think I scared 'em off with my pretty convincing impression of an incapably shitfaced buffoon.

Might pop down for a jar or two though. Have to pick up my minidisc placer anyway, which I cleverly (ie STUPIDLY) left plugged into the mixer last time.

Woot!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, what with indie disco not being my idea of fun, even with Matt playing, and the fact that I am recovering from flu and hoping to go see Barnet-Exeter the next day, I'll skip it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 January 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to be playing Robot Rock by Daft Punk tonight. Despite not having heard it yet. I find this quite exciting.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I will def be along for pre-nindie drinkies, but possibly being EVEN INDIER THAN EVER and going off to How Does It Feel instead. But it's just down the road so if (hahaa) it is rub I can always pop back down t'road!

Sarah C, Friday, 21 January 2005 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT IS THIS? A CLUB FOR PRE-90S ANTS?

Babylon Zoolander (blueski), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to HDIF but maybe see you guys at the red lion (although that'd be going from holloway to angel and then back to highbury madness which messes up with my mind.)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

post-00s decks for pre-90s ants, innit.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't mean to start a HDIF splinter group Matt, sorry!! :) :)

But Charlie yes that looks GREBT! Hoorah!

Sarah C, Friday, 21 January 2005 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I disapprove of that playlist. It is for people with too much tweed in their wardrobes. Mine will be much better.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I seriously disapprove of that playlist. Saying that, it is unlikely that I will make it to either club on account of feeling like death warmed up.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

will anybody play wendy & bonnie or mort garson at any of these things?

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

did you get my txt about Vitalic?

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I would play Jet Song if I had a better quality version. I might play Aquarius a bit later, once the acid has kicked in and everyone has started having sex with one another.

MC/DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

your tactics to entice people to Isl Academy are becoming more audacious i notice

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm definitely coming along for pre-club drinkies, but don't know how much dancing and clubbing I will be feeling up to. Also don't know what time I'll be getting there, possibly early, depending on what time Suzy chucks me out. :-)

Have had mysterious message from The Spy, in code, naturally, and either he's saying he's coming along or else he's mercilessly taking the piss out of me. Will accordingly be spending the rest of the afternoon up at MI5 feeding said message through an Enigma machine trying to figure it all out. Dammit, tis neither a masonic code nor a Templar code that I recognise. Where is Dan Brown when you need him?

Double Agent The (Other) Saint over and out.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I have access to Top Secret Information. He is planning on attending, I believe. The clue is on a walrus tusk in the Natural History Museum.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, why do you always know more about my lovelife than I do?

Sigh.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

once the acid has kicked in and everyone has started having sex with one another

haha you've been to club Seal before, right?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking as the only ILX0r who has ever actually been to Club Seal while on hallucinogens, NO NO NO NO, BAAAAAAAADDD IDEA!!! Club Seal + drugs = BAD PANIC ATTACKS and running around Islington the rest of the night quoting Blake and Pepys.

(OK, that sounds like a normal night out for me and The Novelist, but still.)

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

are you guys going for a club sandwich before club seal?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god the all you can eat Veggie Indian place on Chapel Market, yum yum yum, any takers?

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

do they do club sandwiches?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I hear that in Islington you can have a harlot for the price of a lobster and a bottle of cheap wine!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i got one for a bag of chips and a can of coke once.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i got a discount due to my good looks i guess. and she was wankered.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the price is even lower in Lambeth, but ah well.

Web cafe time almost up. See some of you tonight.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry guys, would love to, but unless I get paid ummm ... now, there's no way I can make it out.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, when were you planning on getting to HDIF? I am getting worried about turning up later and not getting in - I assume you've been more recently than me, am I over-worrying?

kitchen, Friday, 21 January 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Anna does your hotmail work? i e-mailed you ages ago about all that tax paraphenalia

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but i didn't get that. I'm afraid I have put it all into the hands of my accountant so I still understand bugger all about it, but someone else is doing it for me. I am skint though, because despite being owed shedloads of money, I haven't been paid since mid-november. Email me again, hotmail pref. to gmail because my home computer doesn't like gmail.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(It would be lovely to see you all at some point. I am sick of being in financial Coventry.)

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

hi.. actually i haven't been for a good few months! i was going to get there around 10:30pm but then you've scared me about not getting in! and maybe i should go there early to catch the guest DJ i dunno when he'd be on. guess that'd rule out the red lion altogether!

sarah when are you thinking of heading? (if you are?????)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

10.30 sounds a reasonable compromise to me, I can't imagine it being difficult to get in then, realistically... who's the guest DJ?

Sarah C, Friday, 21 January 2005 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Anna i was in your position just before Christmas so am willing to buy you a drink tonight considering i sponged more than a few pints off people myself prior to the veritable gala of loot that is January 2005 (i.e. i finally got what was coming to me)

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, it's Andy Strickland isn't it AND his set looks great!! Argh, so tormented. Will anyone be in the Red Lion EARLIER for drinkies else I might not get to meet up with anyone :(

Sarah C, Friday, 21 January 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm up for drinkies from 8 if anyone else is.. if my old landlady hands the scrill i'll even buy the 1st round.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i havne't seen many of you guys for ages.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be at the pub a lot earlier than 8 at this rate

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

if my old landlady hands the scrill

I don't know what you kidz are on about most of the time, tchoh!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Anna if it makes any difference it'll be free to get in if you're on the list and £1.50 for vodka/beer. Evil student prices.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Andy Strickland the guy that used to play in some indie band whose name I can't remember?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If I sell a coat at a vintage shop and get over £10 I'll come. Curently even the bus fare to Angel will wipe out half of my cash.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Andy Strickland the guy that used to play in some indie band whose name I can't remember?

He was in The Loft with that chap from Wisdom of Harry...Pete Astor.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 21 January 2005 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

He also used to be editor of Dotmusic.com!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 21 January 2005 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

He's even older than me!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dear Anna has turned into me.

alix (alix), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Might be in the cinema next door!

Miles Finch, Friday, 21 January 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be okay if I could get my hands on any part of the £3100 I am owed! (Frustration levels are high, esp. as I have just filled out some on-line 'what job are you suited to' malarky and it came back with magazine journalism or editing; creative writing; non-fiction writing or editing; news reporting; teaching journalism or media; teaching creative writing; actor. Well, gee, thanks for all that new info, maybe I'll just have to loose a whole stone and become an actress.)

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i will be there long before 8 ;)

although i think meg and i's plan may be:

go to red lion
have a couple
go eat
come back
drink more
go dance.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

So, from 7ish in the Red Lion, hooray what a relief, I can see people and HDIF as well without feeling guilty - 'ray!

Sarah C, Friday, 21 January 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I am owed no mon, sadly, apart from £40 my brother borrowed 2years ago. Seeing as he is now a homeless I can't think I'll get it back. I wonder what job I am suited to?

alix (alix), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

How about demolition? With those hands, you'd only have to work for 20 mins a day!

Sarah C, Friday, 21 January 2005 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And I'd make a chunk of mon.

alix (alix), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, mon.

Sarah C, Friday, 21 January 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

We need lives, us.

alix (alix), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I just laughed out loud at that, and now I feel all guilty.

I was informed this morning that my co-DJs will be bringing a megaphone. This must be kept away from me *at all costs* in case I start shouting "ISLINGTON! ARE YOU ALIVE?" or worse.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw a 'Wanted - Moon Shield' ad in the local paper the other day (or should that be Mon Shield? eh? EH?)

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I can come! Someone has paid me a bit (so I am still broke, but now have bus fare etc)! Red Lion is where?

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah! I assume it's this one:

http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub73.htm

Sarah C, Friday, 21 January 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

just the other side of pentonville/city road from angel tube:

http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub73.htm

Come out of Angel tube, turn left, straight over at the cross-roads. The Old Red Lion is the first pub on the left.

yes sarah you are right.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh could pop in for a swift half after dinner with me family. Will consult with the Robster mid-brasserie.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Those Street map maps always remind me of the grid on Catchphrase.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

haha that'd be an awesome gameshow if you'd have to guess the place from a partial map

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 22 January 2005 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

hope club seal was fun!! HDIF was awesome.

there was a massive queue outside but i went to the offie and got a super tennents, after which (and the sparks and double whiskey before) there was not a care in the world about queues. and danxors later. when suedehead came on i danced like a well dressed attractive prick.

fitting i guess.

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 22 January 2005 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Club Seal wasn't quite as indie as made out.

I mean, it was still very indie. But that was good, it gave our tired old bones a rest between all the grebt retro shite.

Matt's set was excellent. I hope he didn't play Robot Rock as the one thing I didn't know which might have been it was fucking dreadful.

Dancing, drinking, hurrah. Now for Barnet.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 22 January 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry didnt make it. didnt feel well, who went? did he play comus?

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 22 January 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I opened with The Trees - 'Parable of the Mustard Seed Pt1 (Below The Earth', kicked into 'Big Sur' by Mort Garson and then played a set encompassing psych-folk, country crunk, filterdisco and old-school 303 acid. Then I got bored DJing and just stuck a Jeff Mills mix CD on went and danced with all the statuesque Bostonian girls looking for skinny indieboy lovin'.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 22 January 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

thats all very well, but your use of the word "statuesque" betrays your own preferences, rather than mine, thereby blowing the whole thing

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 22 January 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Curses. Foiled again.

Thank you everyone for turning up. You are all lovely. It was a bit emptier than usual when we arrived so it was a very good thing that the ILX Massive was there to get the dancing going, and reassuring to be playing to what I knew was a friendly crowd.

Musically I think it was the best night we've done, struck exactly the right balance between big indie tunes, proper pop thrills and other stuff. At the start of the set people were requesting Interpol and the Libertines and by the end they were requesting the PSBs and Michael Jackson. Victory for popism. 'House of Love' once again proved by club science to be the best floor-filler ever, especially as it prompted four cute girls to get up on stage and dance with me.

That megaphone came in very handy as well, especially during Fit But You Know It, and just for making cool siren noises at appropriate moments.

And after last night they've made me a regular, which is cool :)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Tom, I did play Robot Rock. Right at the end, just before the Pet Shop Boys. But then I think its great if not quite up to their usual standard.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Also it was weird finding out that Ollie used to play at Club Sussed back in the day. What with Kate and MyGareth knowing each other its like the whole thing came full circle.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

HDIF absolutely rocked, I have to say. Among others, Strickland played McCarthy, Bodines, 'Radio Free Europe', 'Destroy The Heart', plenty of Moz, 'I Know Someone Who Blah Blah Alan McGee', 'Crystal Crescent', 'Sorry For Laughing' plus Blow Up fare such as 'Stoned Love', 'Tighten Up' et al. Wonderful.

I used to sit opposite Strickland during a month as a work experience boy at Record Mirror back in the stone age era - he was the only one willing to take me at all seriously. He has barely changed apart from a greying temple.

darren (darren), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Bet HDIF didn't have vinyl frisbee and DJs handing out free beer though, did it?

I have a big scratch on my chin from being hit in the face with a Futureheads record early in my set, but it just added to the whole goofy comedy of the night.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm, yeah, I admit I'd have liked to have heard something a bit more contemporary like Futureheads, Matt. On another subject though, fuck Iain bastard Dowie.

darren (darren), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What a weird weekend. The best of times. The worst of times. All at the same time.

For once, I had a really good time at Club Seal.

I probably won't be on ILX much for a while, I don't think.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Sunday, 23 January 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Do the email thing intsead then Kate.

I had a great time, even when my necklace exploded whilst i was trying to dance like Liza Minelli in Cabaret.

Anna (Anna), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Hello. I'm doing this again on Friday - same arrangement as last time, and it would be very nice to see you the following weekend.

As its my birthday the following Monday I will be playing the song that was #1 on the day I was born. Although this is an indie disco staple anyway and therefore not exactly a risk.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 7 February 2005 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I will try to come to this, as I won't be able to make it your birthday and I feel bad about that.

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Monday, 7 February 2005 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump if anyone fancies it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 February 2005 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
Hi kids. This Friday night is CLUB JACKO, where we will be celebrating the innocence of the great man with use of appalling stage props. We may also play one or two of his records. Charlie #4 and Some Bands are on before, so it should be a good night. If anyone fancies it, like...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I really shouldn't come b/c I just know you'll ask me to Moonwalk on the stage.

BARMS, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

up for this, as long as my bro is too.

emsk, Thursday, 16 June 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

DUDE!!! This Friday is my last weekend of freedom before my new job undercover with MI5 starts for real and I have no life. Come and celebrate! Several lives with intertwine in weird ways. Come and say goodbye real life, hello FUCKING FINANCIAL GAIN!!! and so on and so forth. Wowo, I'm drunk already,.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 16 June 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

yay kate!! nu-job loitering with intent on horizon plus freeeeeeeeeeedom = weekend of mayhem. woohoo, i wish i could join in. will be there tonight though. yeah.

emsk, Friday, 17 June 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

You got a job! Nicve one!

Anna (Anna), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

this sounds fun, but i'm going to a poker party. and i don't play poker.

that said, if the evening ends early with people arguing (not unheard of in competitive games involving money, in my experience), i may try to come dancing, or something.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I have a whole thread about me getting a new job:

Goodbye To All That (and come drink with me)

HURRAH HURRAH HURRAH!!!

Anyway. Please come to the indie disco. Emsk, I will message you so we can meet up.

Does anyone know if The Spy is coming? I think he's sulking coz I sent a drunken email to his work account (oh god) and he's either ignoring it or else it was screened by the Presbyterian Elders for drunkenness.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 17 June 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Raa! Tonight was FUN! But now I can't sleep.

Here's the DJ:

And here's some rawk!

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

yay, i had a really good time! matt is so the best DJ of the ones i saw.

sorry i just missed kate and magnus, it would have been nice to see you before you start your new job.

i really like my hair in that picture.

colette (a2lette), Saturday, 18 June 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

ROXETTE IS BACK!

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Saturday, 18 June 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Hey, thanks for coming, to those of you who I actually saw - I think I missed most people due to having to leave at 11pm, boo. Sorry to have missed, um, people and stuff.

Although I do recall, through my own personal Haze of Ruin, espying Carsmile on the Northern Line.

I hope the DJ mix improved after i left, it sounds bloody awful on the minidisc I made of wot I played.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 18 June 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Argh, sorry we missed you as well, Colette, but I had just had a run-in with horrible people and was in a shite mood, and Magnus was exhausted from all the spying and just wanted to go home, so I went back to Emsk's house and we drank beer and ate chocolate and talked about bicycles until 4 in the morning. I hope they got to Brighton OK...

It was very RAWK as we were leaving. I just wasn't in the mood for all that rockism. I'm sorry.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Sunday, 19 June 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
Hello kids. This Friday, I've just had confirmation, is THE LAST CLUB SEAL EVER. It would be very nice to see some of you there. I'm planning on playing a Greatest Hits set of bad dancing on the stage moments from the last 12 months.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

going to a show first, but could maybe try to come on the way home...why is it the last one? that's so sad!

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Looks like Gu1lty P1easures, which has the downstairs room at the moment, is taking over the whole Academy from November. It's had a good innings, and its fulfilled its primary purpose for me. Think we'll look for another night so this might not be the end...

But yeah, we won't be kicking off til 11ish as usual, so come along.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

ice cream man

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I can't come along. I'll be in Brighton!

Paranoid Spice (kate), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

I'll be at the Backstreet Boys concert (YAYAYAYAYYAYAYYAY!), but might come along afterwards if I haven't pulled Nick Carter.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

that'd be quite a feat.. isn't it he who inspired the name backstreet boys?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Nope, but he did beat up Paris Hilton! Go NICK!

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

he didn't film it though

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

No more Ice Cream Man. Ever again.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

i was wondering if alan would be at ladytron (that's where we're going, too). will try to make this although i have to be v v careful not to ruin myself for fabric the next night...

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

FAP in the Red Lion beforehand?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Damn it. I have already agreed to go to a party. I like Seal a lot, even if I do get stupidly drunk everytime I go. (Ha! Gareth! I too have danced on the bar to Ice Cream Man. And I liked it!)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

i must admit i had to look up ice cream man. i'm still none the wiser, having seldom stayed beyond hedonistic. sorry, matt. i can't make this friday either, as i'll be in hamburg.

also, perhaps you might play at our little place in kilburn sometime?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Kilburn? Why not. Chuck me an email and we'll sort something out.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

well, i said i was never going to set foot in that place ever again, after the ice cream man business. i may soften, as it is the last one, but i think i have other plans

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

mr whippy?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

How Does It Feel To Be Whipped?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

On the strength of those ace pictures upthread, I kinda want to check this out, but my mind is clouded worries about work the next day, Fabric the next night and not knowing any of you.....

will see if i can drag one of my buddies along

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

can't come, in cheshire. would be at ulrich schnauss anyway... can't you just move it to somewhere less repulsive than bar academy?

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Agreed - honestly, one of the main reasons I haven't come more often is that I hate Bar Academy. Can you move it somewhere nice?

Paranoid Spice (kate), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

yes. and move that hedonistic thingy too.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

We'll be back, in some form or another, possibly with a different name, a different venue and different music. It's all very exciting.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

if you do move elsewhere please find another place with £1.50 a pint

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

of wine

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

please tell me you haven't been downloading Baddiel's Syndrome.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

i haven't been downloading Baddiel's Syndrome, you big cock

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

saying it in a staccato voice doesn't make it any more true

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Am supposed to be going here on Thursday night, then off on some work bonding session (joy of joys) at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday, then running a cross country six miler on Sunday. But it looks fun, so if I can browbeat a few mates into coming too I might skulk in the corner for a bit.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

i think we managed to convince ledge to come to this as well.

when you move it, can you move it somewhere even closer to my house, please? like maybe the embassy bar?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Dammit, stop having LAST EVER nights while I'm away! I'm going to return to a social wasteland, aren't I?

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

when you move it, can you move it somewhere even closer to my house, please?

We're short of a venue, can we use your front room?

The, hem hem, ILX clubbing empire does appear to be faltering slightly. On the other hand, it does free up Friday nights for exciting new ventures (psststevememailme)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I'll be in the Red Lion (follow the link in at the top of the thread) from about 9ish, after I've gone home, picked up records, had dinner etc.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 October 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

(btw alan have you noticed that the ladytron gig is an early show, due to club nme taking pace at 10pm?)

toby (tsg20), Friday, 21 October 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

I'll be at Ladytron gig as well - meet in pub round the corner from Koko beforehand maybe?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah actually it's kind of weird it's gone from ilx0r involved clubs every friday night to.. none!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

in the space of a month

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

GREAT! no i hadn't noticed, cos i don't have the tixor. that means def seal action. yay

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

maybe we should all join forces and do it at a MEGA-CLUB. three levels.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

I have an ALAN ANTHEM in my bag and am mulling over whether to play it or not.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

oh really, hmmm

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

i hadn't noticed until i went to http://www.koko.uk.com/ . is there even a support band?! i guess they could be on at 8?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah tixor say on at 8 i hear

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

hmm, ours just say "doors 7pm". anyway, guess we'll get there just before 8, not sure we'll have time to make it to the pub first though.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

There have been a lot of early doors gigs of late, WATCH OUT!!!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Also, Hello Sunshine - please do come. We will be handing out free beer!

(This might not actually be a lie)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

ooh. what time does club seal go on until? my flatmate and friends are going to the bierodrome on upper street, maybe they want to come along (dunno though)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Think we're going right up until 3 tonight.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

excellent.. should be making an entrance then (hope there'll still be free beers by then)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

i'm guessing the new madonna song isn't indie enough for club seal? heard it on the way in to work this morning and wanted to hear it in a club soon!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

hdif is looking 50-50 now, so maybe i will turn up. should be at red lion either way

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 21 October 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

maybe we should all join forces and do it at a MEGA-CLUB. three levels.

Well hey, when New Order came back from New York, they opened the Hacienda! And, you know, I'll be coming home from New York next month...

JimD (JimD), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

i'm guessing the new madonna song isn't indie enough for club seal?

If I had it on me, or indeed was able to get my hands on it, I'd probably play it. Has it actually been released yet?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Awesome night! Best possible way for us to go out - thanks to everyone who made it.

Oh, and about the creepy guy, I know, and can only apologise.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 22 October 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

did you see him spitting beer?! i thought i'd imagined it the first time...

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Although the most surreal parts of the night had nothing to do with the club itself. Namely the impromptu performance of Death of A Salesman that occurred in the N1 centre afterwards, and sitting in a flat in Dalston at 4am watching some coked-up art students attempting to play the Pet Shop Boys on a Moog.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I arrived very late and the cloakroom was closed, is why I was wearing my jacket ties around my waist. I realise that it is otherwise punishable by death.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 22 October 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

P4trick Duffy

Bobby Ewing was at Club Seal!?!?

Ah, I MISS YOU ALL. Great pics. I actually thought I was in one for a second, but it turned out to be Mr Farrell.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 23 October 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Ah well, looks like you guys had fun. Meanwhile, in Brighton, I got to see a lesbian(?)* strip nekkid while singing "O Holy Night" and rub meat all over her. She gave me her heart. OK, she didn't - she threw a cow heart at the audience. But still. Quality entertainment.

*this is speculation based purely on wishful thinking.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Monday, 24 October 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
dont some of you (or some of your friends) dj at...club nme at koko sometimes?

charlotte is djing there tomorrow night for some reason i am unclear about, i might be going i think

-- (688), Thursday, 16 November 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

i hadn't seen that picture of me, with the hands, before. i like it.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 16 November 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Anna-Marie, Phoebe and Nick have played there a few times, if that's what you mean. It is a terrifying black hole of teenage hormones and badly-applied eyeliner. But the upstairs bars are okay.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 November 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

But on the other hand... is Charlotte the cute one?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 November 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

charlotte's well fit

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 November 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

its the upstairs bar, yes

shes the one you like, yes

-- (688), Thursday, 16 November 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

So, are we going, then?

Hadn't seen the photos before. I like them. I took quite a few on my cameraphone, including some vaguely incriminating shots of Rob and Mario lezzing upp.

Badrock Example (Barima), Thursday, 16 November 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

oh my GOD none of you have any shame whatsoever

i shall not be there

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 16 November 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

I was ALMOST too embarassed to mention this, but then the old attention seeker got the better of me. The Club Seal team (well, two thirds of us anyway) will be playing at this in the main room at the Islington Academy this weekend. If any of you like that sort of thing/have no shame whatoever/have nothing better to do on Saturday then come along.

This is a trial run for what might become a semi-regular slot that may or may not involve a London ILX DJ who will remain nameless but is frightfully obvious anyway.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 November 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Aw hell, dude, I'd like to come and see the Lex's new indie disco DJ gig, but I'm booked up as it is...and yet, I am semi-tempted.

Badrock Example (Barima), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

that looks even worse than rex the dog

-- (688), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

I can't wait to see the Lex spinning 500 Miles.

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

and where is it we are going again tonite, ed?

-- (688), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

what is 500 miles

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

its the record that was mixed with 2 bad mice bombscare in that awful bootleg at fabric

-- (688), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

I think I am going to see G00blar, (i.e. I am wussing out of watching you buy cider and blacks for 15 year olds with too much eyeliner)

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

oh god, here's here, on this thread, i'm going to get evicted from my own house aren't i?

-- (688), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

Come eat pizza with us anyway, Gareth.

Little Star of Bedlam (kate), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

WE ARE GOING TO SEE CARL CRAIG NEXT WEEK, IT'S OKAY!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

when and where?

-- (688), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

(i mean pizza, i know where carl craig is)

-- (688), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Porchetta, roseberry av. this evening, sometime, details TBC

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

-- (688), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

braveclub (braveclub), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Optimo was tonight? I wasn't planning on going anyway as I really need a good night's sleep and Barden's is in a stupid place.

(Hi Robin!)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

you can make yr mouth into an ampersand, that's pretty kewl...

isn't bardens like the size of 1 x shoebox though? it's in a perfectly sensible place, though.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

No, Bardens is actually quite big. Too big, considering the nights they usually get in there. Optimo should pack it out though.

Gareth and I have decided to fuck the playlist and bring lots of rave. I'm sure it'll go down okay.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

sorry i thought you were talking about tonight.

"new rave" or old?

braveclub (braveclub), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Optimo at espacious Bardens? Dammit!

2 american 4 u (blueski), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

fitzroy after work wherever you're headed

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Old. I think any music released after 1997 is frowned upon.

Fitroy Tavern, you mean?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

given that the club's remit is 86-96 i'm guessing OLD SKOOL. i shall get some GLO-STIX!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

-- (688), Friday, 17 November 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)
