Purely in the interest of free food and booze, I'm going to a very right-leaning reception tomorrow night, sponsored by my wife's work. She says K@rl R0ve is supposed to show up. What's the best snack to throw at a guy like that? THrowing, and thus not drinking, booze is not an acceptable option.

Independent Media Space Opens to Cover Inauguration

During the events surrounding the Inauguration of President George W. Bush on January 20, 2005, the mainstream media will be buzzing with coverage of the parties, parades, and speeches that will cost the American people tens of thousands of dollars. The media will not discuss how there are reports of faulty Diebold computer voting machines and uncounted votes that have yet to be fully investigated, or that almost half of those who voted did not vote for Bush. The same was true of the last election. The mainstream media provided almost no coverage of the protests and general dissent surrounding the 2000 inauguration. We do not want this situation to occur again, and we are determined to use our voices and the voices of others around the world to ensure that independent messages are heard.

The success of delivering these messages depends upon how much unity we can create in the world of independent media. One person acting alone is one voice. Acting together, we are many voices, and can pool our resources to rise above the din of the mainstream media. We can ensure that the voice of independent media is heard loud and clear.

For that reason, the Inauguration Media Coalition, a group of independent media makers, has converged to facilitate coverage of the Inauguration. We are providing a media resource center with high speed Internet access and facilities for doing audio, video, print, photo and Web media. The space will be open between Saturday, January 15 and Friday, January 21. It will be open from 10 AM-10 PM every day, except for Inauguration Day, when it will be open from 8 AM until 10 PM, and on January 21, when it will be open until 8 PM. The media resource center is located at 624 T St. NW, Washington, DC, at the intersection of T St. and 7th St. NW, near the Shaw/Howard University stop on the green line. We are extremely fortunate to have been provided with this space by Cafe Mawonaj, a community cafe that has a wide selection of delicious entrees (including vegetarian and vegan entrees) as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and fair trade coffee from Cameroon. Cafe Mawonaj will be open for extended hours during the Inauguration, from 7 AM to midnight every day.

We will be providing this space to give journalists the resources to create independent coverage of the Inauguration events, but also to give activists a resource for immediate coverage of the events of the Inauguration as they happen. If you would like to contact this resource space during the week of the Inauguration, for updates or for more information, please call (202) 332-4481. For more information on the Inauguration Media Coalition and independent media, please see our website at www.inaugurationmedia.org. To see news updates as they are produced online, please see the DC Indymedia website, at dc.indymedia.org.

There's gonna be a big soca show with David Rudder, Alison Hinds and others.

A Haitian event with Nu Look.

The Delfonics are gonna be on a soul and blues bill with local act Memphis Gold (who has gotten some national attention in Living Blues magazine).

Veteran soul act Skip Mahoney & the Casuals will be apearing with the Jewels (1960s minor hit "Opportunity Knocks" and they toured with James Brown) at the Chateau(a DC hand-dancing venue--it's like swing/jitterbug sorta...)

And Springsteen is likely gonna be at the Lincoln Memorial

More specifics on shows I mentioned above-

Sun. 1-18-

Soca Queen Alison Hinds with her band, King David Rudder, D Sweet Man Baron, Jamesy P, Kerwin Dubois, Jeremy Sookdar and Dolla. All Backed by the Sunshine Band at the former Chevrolet building located at 5929 Georgia Ave NW Washington DC from 9:00 p.m. - 5:00 a.m.

I think the soul show with Skip Mahoney and the Jewels at the Chateau is on Sat. 1-17. Skip does not update his old website and the Chateau does not have one. I heard the event mentioned on WPFW radio.

I think the Delfonics, Memphis Gold show is on the 19th at a hotel in Crystal City (near DC). I can't find nothing on the internets.

That ball, hosted by the newly installed president, will be geared toward Washingtonians, with a portion of tickets set aside for locals.

Details also were announced for a jazz-centered "Celebration of America" at the Kennedy Center on Monday. Tracer,

Are you sure Obama is speaking at the Lincoln Memorial on Monday January 19th MLK Day? I thought he was calling that a day of service for volunteer efforts? I thought he might make an appearance at the Sunday the 18th concert at the Lincoln Memorial and briefly speak. Maybe that's what you meant. But yes the 40th anniversary is historic no matter what.

I forget whether this event was mentioned:

On Monday, January 19th, Michael Stipe and the Manifest Hope: DC art gallery will co-host a special, invitation-only party in celebration of the inauguration of Barack Obama. The party, presented by MoveOn.org, SEIU, OBEY Giant, and Shepard Fairey, is also co-hosted by Rosario Dawson, and actress Heather Graham. Live performers Santogold, De La Soul and Moby, who will spin directly after the live set.

"Santogold is my pick for album of the year, and this is easily the best event of the week," says Michael Stipe. "I plan to salute the epoch with great music, great activists and artists and a superfun crowd."

In addition to the party, the Manifest Hope: DC gallery will present a show featuring an array of the nation's most talented visual artists under one roof to mark the inauguration. The gallery, which will be open to the public from January 17th through 19th, encourages artists and activists to maintain the momentum from the campaign and bring real reform in three key areas: heath care, worker's rights, and the green economy.

I'd love for Chuck Berry to be involved in this somehow.

Euler, Saturday, 17 January 2009 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

That would have been great. For Clinton's first inaugural they had the guy who coordinates the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest arrange some of the acts, this time they're going more pop. Although they are trying for historical connections--I read that they're gonna have Sugarland's singer do "My Country Tis of Thee" because Marian Anderson sang that at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 when she performed there because the Daughters of the American Revolution would not let any Black performers sing at their Constitution Hall.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 17 January 2009 21:43 (seventeen years ago)

Went to the Lincoln Memorial thing. Obama's speech, Bettye Lavette, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder w/Usher and Shakira, Beyonce, and Jamie Foxx's impersonation of Obama were highlights. Garth Brooks doing "American Pie" and "Shout" and a third song not so much. But my big problem with the show was the stage layout. Either to make HBO happy or to make the Secret Service happy, the performers were hidden behind an on-stage jumbotron so even if you were a crazy person who got there at 8:30 a.m. you still had to rely on the jumbotrons. Plus, despite realizing that people would be there early and waiting, all they had for pre-show entertainment was a few sporadic videos.

I know all the cynicism about Aretha--her voice has lost some of its range, she coasts, she's just so big in an unhealthy distracting way. But tonight she and the whole event was something special. The Kennedy Center began giving out tickets at 4 and people were lined up before that, with many ultimately not getting in.

The show had the feel of a Black church. Women in the row behind us saying, “you say it sister.” An 120 person gospel choir on a steep set of bleachers backed Aretha and the opening acts. The evening was also a tribute by the John Thompson Jr. fund to Marian Wright Edelman, the first African-American woman lawyer in Mississippi and the longtime head of the Children’s Defense Fund. She delivered a powerful speech about how America still needs to help poor children. Aretha sang “Chain of Fools” and some gospel songs (at least one from her Amazing Grace album) and talked about Martin Luther King and Barack Obama. She joined her band and the gospel choir and another vocalist for a powerful closing version of the abolitionist piece that MLK quoted a time or two—“The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” You know, with its lyrics "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord: He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on."

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

I think it was webcast and archived on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage website.

Hay guize, which US TV channel should I watch this thing on? I was thinking MSNBC but they don't broadcast in HD (last time I checked) and... I have a big TV. Do we think they will push OlberMan and thee dykee over to reg: NBC? I don't want to be around Wolf Blitzor or anyone on the Today show.

I think they're keeping Olbee and company on cable. Not sure.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Aretha's gonna sing at the inaugural as well.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

is it telling that aretha sang @ carter clinton and barry and NOT Reagan or Bushes 1, 2?

Every Day Jimmy Mod Is Hustlin' (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

I remember when Bush 1 campaign advisor Lee Atwater tried to get Etta James to sing at a ball and she replied, "I won't be Lee Atwater's porch n#gg*." Atwater, a fan of sixties soul from his college fratboy days, did suceed in getting some folks to a ball, but it was a minor one and not like the inaugural itself.

Hmm:

Upon alighting at the North Portico, the Obamas were met by Bush and first lady Laura Bush. Michelle Obama, wearing a bright yellow dress and matching long coat, handed a gift-wrapped box to Laura Bush.

"Oh how nice, and you had it bronzed too."

Will Doris Kearnes Goodwin just stfu already with the Lincoln comparisons? "If Lincoln were alive today, he'd recognize a kindred spirit," etc.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

I bet Spielberg's Lincoln biopic, when it gets made, is nothing more than a veiled Obama parable.

Forget skipping "faithfully." Did Roberts really call Obama "Senator" after he was sworn in?

Eric H., Tuesday, 20 January 2009 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

Andrew Sullivan sez Roberts fucked up too: "The highlight so far: a quartet that looks like the America we love, a score as deep and as meditative as this moment demands. And an oath bungled by both Justice and President, as the moment simply overwhelmed their human capacity to grasp it. But we are all grasping it now. And, as it happens, it is beyond our grasping."

ABC News: "Chief Justice John Roberts is a man who has made very few public missteps in his life--but he appears to have made one when swearing in Barack Obama. Roberts slightly flubbed the oath, which then tripped up Obama.

The oath is contained in the Constitution: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

But when Roberts swore in Obama, he flipped some of the words, saying: "I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully."

ABC site sez Byrd was "upset and distraught" in response to Kennedy sitch, and that he had to be helped out of the room. No suggestion that it was health-related, except for a strange mention of the fact that he "was conscious when he was taken from the room." Most other sources make it more clear that he "collapsed" and had to be helped out by medical personnel.

UGH i switched to Fox just out of curiosity and Glenn Beck is tearing apart Obama's speech with attempts to compare it with quotes from Madison and Jefferson...there's something SO despicable about this asshole, that rubs me even worse than an obvious blowhard like Hannity...

..what is it? the fact that he's a 1000% moron and even keeps admitting it ("i'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer"), and yet still has a right to talk on television ...? there's something that's driving me LIVID about just hearing him

OH WAIT from Wiki: 'In 1990 Frei took a holiday in Zimbabwe and persuaded aid worker friend Katty Kay to become a journalist.' THANKING YOU MATT FOR FINDING THE BRITISHES ANSWER TO MEGYN KELLY. A Massachusetts man stopped by police along the New Jersey Turnpike amid a suspicion that he was taking explosives to Washington, D.C., prompted a 25-mile closure of the highway east of Philadelphia on Tuesday evening.

At about 6:30 p.m., New Jersey State Police closed the turnpike at exit 1 through exit 4 as a precaution. State troopers, FBI agents and turnpike officials continued to investigate along the highway that leads south to Washington.

New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones said troopers took a 27-year-old man into custody following a car stop in the southbound lanes of the turnpike near Exit 3 in Woodbury Heights.

SCANDAL:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/arts/music/23band.html?hp

The somber, elegiac tones before President Obama’s oath of office at the inauguration on Tuesday came from the instruments of Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and two colleagues. But what the millions on the National Mall and watching on television heard was in fact a recording, made two days earlier by the quartet and matched tone for tone by the musicians playing along.

The players and the inauguration organizing committee said the arrangement was necessary because of the extreme cold and wind during Tuesday’s ceremony. The conditions raised the possibility of broken piano strings, cracked instruments and wacky intonation minutes before the president’s swearing in (which had problems of its own).
