Miles Finch, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Eternal Sunshine got ripped off, but YAY DON CHEADLE!

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Bleh. So boring.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Is 'Before Sunset' really adapted? 'Anchorman' woz robbed.

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom Wilkinson not in Best Support Actor noms for Eternal Sunshine, for shame.

Sideways in Best Pic? Wow. There by dint of all the big-budget epics all tanking at box-office.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Giamatti, the best thing in Sideways, glossed over ... sick.

They badly need a Best Picture Released Before October category. (ESOTSM was just too good.)

Before Sunset is neither adapted nor a screenplay.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Incredibles non-appearance in the Best Pic catogory made all the more painful due to the fact that Finding Neverland is a tower of fucking wank.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

At least Mike Leigh wedged into the Director category, tho I'd rather have seen Gondry or Almodovar.

So Passion of the Mel beat MikeMoore 9/11, 1-0?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The Oscars have effectively ghettoized films like The Incredibles by having the stupid Best Animated Film category.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone here seen any of the foreign film noms? They certainly aren't the ones Ilxors have been talking about.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's the deal with Before Sunset: it's "based on characters created by Richard Linklater and Kim Krizan" (who wrote Before Sunrise). Because Krizan had no part in the sequel, it's considered an adaptation. Pretty stupid, huh?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sea Inside (with Javier Bardem) is def. the most high-profile of the foreign film candidates and is thus prob. the favorite.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

No, the Foreign Film noms are always wild cards. "Moolaade" didn't even get submitted (nor "Bad Education"?). "Downfall" opens soon in NYC, an account of Hitler's bunker w/ Bruno Ganz:

http://www.filmforum.com/films/downfall.html

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Biggest surprise out of all the nominees here is probably Alan Alda. (A lot of people weren't predicting Clint for actor but I never understood why -- probably because it was a crowded category and they were predicting Paul Giamatti instead.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it would have been great if Kill Bill 2 was nominated for best score but that was never going to happen, was it?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Total list:

http://oscars.com/nominees/nominees.html

I H Huckabees is shut out, I Robot is not.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Kill Bill 2's best shot was probably Carradine for Supporting.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure everyone is stoked about seeing Counting Crows, nominated for "Accidentally in Love," perform at the ceremony!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

They wouldn't pass up John Williams for that Wu guy!

Hey, Christ got THREE nominations: Makeup, Cinematography and Score.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray for the fear of piracy, which means that for the first time ever, I can see two of the best picture nominees in the cinemas now, and two more this weekend (the other one is Finding Neverland, which went through last November without stirring a single leaf).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, nobody I know cares about Finding Neverland.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it would have been great if David Holmes' Code 46 was nominated for best score but that was never going to happen, was it?

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

what the hell is it?? wasn't JM Barrie a paedo or something? is that what it's about?

David -- no, because it and the film were TEH SUCK x 10000000

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Next, Depp will play MJ in Raiding Neverland.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty much, yeah

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

god how boring. yay for natalie portman, clive owen, and thomas hayden church (and imelda staunton I guess, although I didn't see vera drake yet). I can't make myself care about the Aviator no matter how much I try.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and yay for Before Sunset getting a nomination even if that categorization is bunk

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck is Million Dollar Baby?

The Incredibles, fucking ROBBED.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck is Million Dollar Baby?
Clint's Girlfight.

"This is going to be Scorsese's year"

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoyed The Incredibles but I'm sorta surprised to see you thinking it was robbed, Nick! Like Leon notes, it's got its own little 'who cares?' category now -- and was there any buzz on it anyway beyond that in terms of awards?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I"m surprised they nominated Jaimee Foxx TWICE

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Jessica Lange got a double nomination back in 1983, I think -- best supporting for Tootsie, best for Frances, the biopic of Kurt and Courtney's kid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

this is kind of the worst nominations list that I've seen in at least 3 years, maybe 5. WTF?

Allyzay Highlights The Fallacy of Radiohead (allyzay), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Foxx's double totally predicted. (Julianne Moore did it recently too)

The Incredibles is cute, but in the last 20 minutes becomes just another too-loud, too-fast action trasher.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, really, that was more of a gut reaction to seeing a film I had never even HEARD OF until just now in the BEST FILM category. And also because I watched a bootleg copy of Incredibles the other day and realized it's not just one of my favorite animated films ever, it's one of my favorite films ever PERIOD.

As shitty as I thought Collateral was apart from Jamie Foxx, I wouldn't be upset whatsoever to see him take both.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

how in the hell can they call that a supporting role when he is the MAIN character (Foxx)

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"This is going to be Jamie Foxx's year"

The Incredibles was 'robbed' in that it's better than all the Best Picture nominations.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

all bar one of the best picture/best director nommos were released in the uk within about a four week period! you get a kind of strange 'well that was a year' quality to the oscars from this side of the atlantic.

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim Carrey in ESOTSM >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Leo DiCaprio in The Aviator (and everything else he's done)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

how in the hell can they call that a supporting role when he is the MAIN character

No-one takes precedence over The Cruiser. Remember that.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

>how in the hell can they call that a supporting role

Same reason Tim Hutton won supporting for his lead role, and Pacino was nominated supporting for Godfather I. (Also, Hopkins won lead when Hannibal Lecter is onscreen for about 22 minutes.)

Why do we care?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit. I've just realized, this is the year of the biopic.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't the best film list be like this?:

Maria Full of Grace
The Incredibles
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Hotel Rwanda
Ray

FUCK YOU HOLLYWOOD.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't the best film list be like this?:
Dead Man's Shoes
The Incredibles
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Hotel Rwanda
Shaun of the Dead

FUCK YOU HOLLYWOOD.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

SHAUN OF THE DEAD! WTF OSCARS

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh, who put this on (the Oscar best pic nom list)?

Some random.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The fuckface from Counting Crows was nominated for Best Song?!?!!?!?!?!?!?! BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN!!!!!!

Leon the Fatboy (in nyc) (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Incredibles was 'robbed' in that it's better than all the Best Picture nominations.

That's for sure.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

But but but Alexander. Oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Smash Mouth were ROBBED!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

due to the fact that Finding Neverland is a tower of fucking wank.

-- David Merryweather

You mean you didn't like the Michael Jackson biopic starting Johnny Depp?

EComplex (EComplex), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The fuckface from Counting Crows was nominated for Best Song?!?!!?!?!?!?!?! BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN!!!!!!

I was going to post something to this effect, but that's far more eloquently put than whatever I would have wrote. The concept of Duritz winning an Oscar makes me ill.

I would have enjoyed seeing something like "Montage" from Team America get nominated. OK, what I'd *really* like is for "America!(Fuck Yeah!!)" to be nominated, and Tony Bennett to sing it at the ceremony with bleeps every three seconds, but I am twisted and weird.

Ash (ashbyman), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit, Tupac: Resurrection for Best Documentary!

I'm happy to see Catalina Sandino Moreno nominated, less about Finding Neverland.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Parker and Stone have said that their wish was for "I'm So Ronely" to be nominated, and for Kim Jong Il to come sing it on the night.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck is Million Dollar Baby?

Achieving national US release this Friday, after a figleaf release in December. Surely this is taking the piss?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Parker and Stone have said that their wish was for "I'm So Ronely" to be nominated, and for Kim Jong Il to come sing it on the night.

Best image ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Did everybody forget Eternal Sunshine, or something?

There's really no way Jamie Foxx isn't winning, is there?

Where's Audrey? I feel bad for Audrey.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Prepare for the standard two months of jokes and criticism about how "Finding Neverland" must have directed itself.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

SHAUN OF THE DEAD! WTF OSCARS

The most overrated movie of the year.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually Andrew, I really hadn't ever heard of Million Dollar Baby. Although I had seen on myspace.com an advertisement for WCW Million Dollar Baby Contest, which I pictured in my head as some sort of win-your-wee-little-toddler-a-round-in-the-ring-with-Goldberg email sweepstakes or something, no purchases necessary.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, Natalie Portman?

Allyzay, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if Jamie Foxx changed his name to Jamie Foxxx, would he have received three nominations?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG another movie better than all those up there (except maybe Ray), totally gipped...FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i have an irrational/rational hatred for Hillary Swank, now that I'm re-reading this list. My grandmother watched "Boys Don't Cry" once and immediately rang up to talk about how "the boy who was playing the one who was really a girl" looked exactly like my ex-boyfriend, and you know what? I thought about it for a while and it was totally not an off-the-wall comparison. I've found her quite creepy ever since, though really The Karate Kid III should've done that already.

allyzay, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep waiting for some editor to miss a crucial typo and see her name in print as Hilary's Wank.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I lived in a world where Shaun of the Dead won Oscars.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Best Zombies"

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually Andrew, I really hadn't ever heard of Million Dollar Baby.

Sorry, Nick, I didn't mean you! I meant the extension of the goldfish memory/only needs to be released in New York system which results in them nominating a film which hasn't even come out nationally yet.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hillary Swank annoys me because she played the girlfriend of Steve Sanders on 90201. Once you've been tainted by Ziering you can never go back.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Natalie was much better in Garden State. You didn't get to see her butt tho.

modJ on teh road, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I shouldn't be prejudiced like this, but it's the man-jaw.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

She kind of reminds me of Matt Damon, looks-wise.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like three of the five Best Actress nominees (not seen MM$Baby or that Annette Bening crap) but those were probably among the three best female lead performances I saw all year.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Natalie Portman's nomination is an outright embarassment. She was the worst actor in that film.

don weiner, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Jessica Lange got a double nomination back in 1983, I think -- best supporting for Tootsie, best for Frances

Also Emma Thompson in 1993: Lead for Remains of the Day, Supporting for In the Name of the Father.

It is pretty stupid that Jamie Foxx was nominated for supporting, though. If he hadn't been assured a nomination for Ray, there's no question he'd have been sold as a lead.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

(for Collateral, I mean)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(wait, that's still not clear: it's not a correction, it's an addition -- tack it on at the end of my sentence)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Natalie Portman's nomination is an outright embarassment."

Amen!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Natalie was much better in Garden State.

fortunately the nominations were not based on votes by the LiveJournal community so this did not come to pass.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder, if an actor were to be nominated twice in the same category, would there be two separate camera angles on he/she during reading of the nominations???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed, alex that the best actress category is very strong. (and my gf assures me that benning was great.)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Natalie Portman has given ONE (semi-)Oscar-worthy performance...exactly 10 years ago, in The Professional.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, could Portman have been less comfortable in those costumes? She was so unsexy. She struck me as a virgin, or at least someone not yet comfortable with sex. I might add that her potato sack gown at the Golden Globs kind of confirmed this for me.

She was entirely miscast.

don weiner, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

no way portman haters!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Costumes? You mean the stripper get-up?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

she was the only good thing in that stupid film.

anyway, my 2c.:

Best supporting actress
Natalie Portman - Closer

Best supporting actor
Jamie Foxx - Collateral

Best original screenplay
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Best adapted screenplay
Before Sunset

the other categories I can't bear to choose.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't think she was that bad, actually. It wasn't a remarkable performance or anything, but I dunno, she has a way of being extremely charming that worked to her advantage in the role.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Clint might actually snag best actor, with The Aviator pwning the pic/director oscars.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

>Natalie Portman's ... was the worst actor in that film.

Prepare yourself for a win. This category now generally goes to the babe 60-year-old men drool over (Connelly, Binoche), so it's between her and Madsen.

Clint's acting is his best ever, so it won't win for that reason.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Foxx has been the odds-on favorite in that category for months, but I guess I wouldn't rule anything out.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

she wasn't bad, she just was a) not an Oscar caliber performance b) was not even as good as Julia Roberts.

I think Portman is beautiful.

But in that role she was not sexy. Part of that may have been intentional. But she wasn't a convincing stripper at all. And I'd say I've seen enough to know what a sexy stripper does--there's a distinct lack of poise in Portman's performance, and it's especially noticeable when she's in the private room with Clive Owen.

I'll bet anyone on ILX that Portman won't win the Oscar, either.

And I would be remiss without noting that Portman's acceptance speech at the Globes was kind of gross (referring to Mike Nichols as "daddy" etc.)

Oh, and I promise I'm not holding anything against Portman for dating Moby. Scorsese is a mortal lock for director--bet your rent on that one.

don weiner, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The only good thing about Collateral was the scenery, really.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I lived in a world where Shaun of the Dead won Oscars

I would gladly join you in that world. What an awesome movie.

I guess I'm one of the few people who thought that The Aviator was actually good, or that DiCaprio is a talented actor?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamie Foxx DESERVES to be the odds on favorite for Ray. He was astounding in that film.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Natalie Portman has given ONE (semi-)Oscar-worthy performance...exactly 10 years ago, in The Professional.

I liked her better in Beautiful Girls.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Only surprise, and a welcome one: Catalina Moreno for Best Actress! No was in hell she'll win, but it would be lovely.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Reddd Foxxx

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Giamatti, the best thing in Sideways, glossed over ... sick.

I agree. I'll pay even less attention this year at our Oscar Party and and drink more champagne.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamie Foxxxxxx (and Cate Blanchet): should v.good impersinations be awarded above other, original, roles though?
Natalie Portman wasn't convincing as a stripper, no. But better than Julia Roberts, yes?

David Merryweather (DavidM), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Don OTM. Portman never seemed comfortable in any of her scenes. The strip-club scene was especially bad, there was no fluidity to her motions or her dialogue (but that could have been the editing and blocking, it all seemed rather jarring). Favorite Portman performance/movie: Where The Heart Is. Fuck the haters.

I'm glad Kate Winslet got nominated for ESOTSM, that was one of my favorite performances last year even if the movie wasn't so exciting.
Alan Alda is fun to watch, but I didn't notice anything in The Aviator that differentiated that role from everything else he's ever done. Dude's one-note.

I guess the woman from Maria, Full of Grace is this year's token low-budget nominee w/ zero chance to win.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Clive Owen "lucked out", as they say in America, in having the shouty, noisy role. Squeakey wheel gets the oil and all that. This is esp true in Closer where all are unlikeable anyway.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

He was quite good, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, he was. I liked his performance.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad Kate Winslet got nominated for ESOTSM, that was one of my favorite performances last year even if the movie wasn't so exciting.

Winslet's accent was pretty dicey, I thought, but she was certainly memorable.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

and Clive Owen was so good that it was hard to imagine him playing Jude Law's part (which Owen did in stage version.)

don weiner, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

and Clive Owen was so good that it was hard to imagine him playing Jude Law's part (which Owen did in stage version.)

don weiner, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Clive Owen is just a better actor than anyone else in the movie. He should get a Oscar just for being forced to interact with them.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Natalie Portman has given ONE (semi-)Oscar-worthy performance...exactly 10 years ago, in The Professional.

OTMx5,000,000. Though the aforementioned "Where the Heart Is" is probably the funniest movie I've ever seen, though maybe not by intentions.

This is like the biggest reason I don't even want to netflix "Closer"! When I heard Natalie Portman is playing a stripper! It seems like the absolute worst case of miscasting since, like, everyone in "Evita." This sounds absolutely disgusting but I don't know how to really put it without sounding like a Japanese businessman: doesn't it seem like she's lost sex appeal since "The Professional"?

at any rate I am pleased that Kate Winslet was nominated, disgusted that Jim Carrey wasn't, and if Scorcese wins best director, well, I won't complain whether or not "The Aviator" is actually worth the win.

yes. Why on earth do they give it two disparate titles? The new DVD release of it has both titles on it in the US.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

'Closer' was an out-and-out disaster; if Owen salvaged *some* dignity from it that doesn't make him Oscar-worthy. Roughly it's Owen>Portman>Roberts>Law, but this does raise the question: can 'acting well' really mean 'acting out a totally unbelievable role with more conviction than it deserves'?

Miles Finch, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, yes. Unless you want films only filled with believable roles, and fuck that shit.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not advocating drab realism. Jim Carrey acts 'believable' roles. But 'Closer' was furthur out than any sci-fi film.

Miles Finch, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

>Alan Alda ..I didn't notice anything in The Aviator that differentiated that role from everything else he's ever done.<

Don't you get it -- he was a CORRUPT senator! And HAWKEYE was a LIBERAL anti-Establishment good goody! It's AMAZING!!!

Re ESOTSM's March release, I guess Focus Features wanted to turn a profit at the less-crowded spring b.o. than throw a sophisticated, profoundly sad comedy into the year-end glut of anvil-subtle blockbusters.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The more I think about it, the more it seems like a crime that Uma Thurman wasn't nominated either last or this year.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

dude 'robbing' and 'crime' only occur if you actually think the academy awards mean anything anymore, I mean shit, when was the last time anybody had enough energy to complain about the grammys? Same fucking difference!

Andrew F completely OTM about Million Dollar Baby completely taking the piss. It's the kind of thing that makes you realize exactly who these prizes are for, and it's not people who give a shit about entertainment.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 January 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The Grammys aren't a perfect analogue, though: there's so much music out there in the world, it doesn't surprise me that Grammy voters fail to notice a lot of the good stuff. Everyone specializes out of necessity, and what ends up as "consensus" is whatever top-selling mainstream artists people can comfortably agree upon.

With the Oscars, though, there's only a few hundred movies released in any given year, at least half of which can probably be easily dismissed when it comes time to consider awards. If there's a consensus, it's one that develops organically, through dialogue, because everyone's already talking about the same few dozen films.

I only mention Uma because Kill Bill was a fairly high-profile film that made a good profit and was well-received by critics. I know better than to complain when the Academy doesn't nominate [Actor You've Never Heard Of From Obscure Indie/Foreign Film But Who Gave a Soul-Searching, Heart-Wrenching Performance, Trust Me!!!] -- because that's pretty implausible (although I dunno given Catalina Moreno Sandino this year and Keisha Castle-Hughes last year), but it seemed like Uma could've had a shot with the right support. Part of me wants people to realize that even though it was an action/genre/whatever movie, it was still an amazing performance. I think people have trouble looking past the KIND of role it was.

Of course it doesn't *MATTER*, Tom. Neither does Pazz and Jop, nor any of the stupid polls we start on ILX. It won't stop me from arguing about them, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

If there's a consensus, it's one that develops organically, through dialogue, because everyone's already talking about the same few dozen films.

jaymc, you are aware that many of the people initiating that dialogue are publicists, hired by the studios to push their Oscar hopefuls (along with the ads in the trades), right?

You are right that the Oscars aren't completely analogous to the Grammys, though. I think that the former are far more "controlled," as the case were, by the dictates of the studios. Yes 300 some films are eligible each year, but I'd argue that there are never more than a couple dozen that are even remote possibilities for Oscar consideration in major categories.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 28 January 2005 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, if you check the AMPAS 'eligible list' every year, I bet there are no more than 180 or so films on it (I think they have to play commercially in LA for a week). Which are probably no more than 10% of the feature-length films screened globally every year (Bollywood bumping up the total). So yeah, fuck it. They're about how Hollywood puts its face on.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 28 January 2005 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Uma in KB -- because the distinguishing feature of the performance was PHYSICAL -- is not something the Academy middlebrows consider "quality acting." If they didn't nominate Pam Grier, who had a helluva lot more dialogue in "Jackie Brown," they sure as shit wouldn't go for UT.

Best Actress: Hilary Swank

Best Supp. Actor: Morgan Freeman
Best Supp. Actress: Cate Blanchett

Best Ensemble: Sideways

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there's a lot of wild cards this year, between the neck-and-neck Picture and Director races, the potentially uncertain supporting categories, and then the telecast itself, which could be a total disaster.

I mean, there's that horrible new idea to have all the technical winners accept the awards from their seat and all the acting nominees to line up on stage like they're competing for Miss America. (I'm just hoping Don Cheadle makes good on his promise to "grab that Oscar" despite whatever name is read!) (And I mean, I actually do hope it comes off as super-awkward so it will convince Gil Cates to scupper it for next year.)

And then, of course, Chris Rock, who might be a brilliant loose cannon, or he might be neutered in keeping with the general propriety of the night.

So: it'll be interesting, I think.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

At this point, I'm predicting wins for Million Dollar Baby, Eastwood for director (sorry, Marty), Jamie Foxx for lead, Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman, and Cate Blanchett, with Eternal Sunshine and Sideways taking the screenplay awards.

Also, test out the sound of "Oscar winner Adam Duritz."

jed_ (jed), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If Million Dollar Baby manages a win, I can tell you that it will be my favorite Best Picture winner since... < whisper > Titanic. < /whisper > So, yeah, this year's Oscars won't exactly suck by my estimation.

As far as the other train-wreck ideas go (Beyonce singing, what, three of the nominated songs?!?!), it should make for a compelling watch. The total antithesis of last year's show.

At the moment, I'm going for the split at the top, but I'm unsure whether to go with Eastwood for director and Aviator for picture or the other way around: Marty for director and M$B for picture. I think I'll probably end up settling on the latter for my Oscar party pool. The top two are pretty exciting (especially since there aren't very many tech nominations for M$B that would tip viewers off to an impending win early on in the show... The Aviator could easily take four, five, even more towards the beginning and still falter in the last hour). Such a shame that the acting categories are almost all boiling down to gimmes, though.

Actor: Foxx, duh
Actress: Swank, almost as duh
S. Actor: Freeman, duh
S. Actress: Madsen, probably the shakiest, but rarely to the SAGs line up 100% with the Oscars

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 26 February 2005 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

My office-pool votes:
Picture: Aviator
Director: Aviator
Actor: Jamie Foxx
Actress: Hillary Swank
Supporting Actor: Thomas Haden Church
Supporting Actress: Sophie Okonedo
Animated: Incredibles
Adapted Screenplay: Sidwways
Original Screenplay: Vera Drake

...and a bunch of other categories. Basically gambling without much confidence on a big Aviator night. Funny thing is that this year (for the first time in a couple decades), I haven't seen any of the Best Picture nominees (oh, so this is what they meant about parenthood). I'll be interested to see if I do better in the pool than last year, when I'd seen them all. (I hope I do better -- last year I bombed.)

Meantimes, while we're awaiting the red carpet, there's this goofy story about Robin Williams' censored Oscar song.

Yeah, that's just a guess. I won't be surprised if it goes to either Kaufman or The Aviator. But Hollywood people like Mike Leigh, and Vera Drake's about abortion, and it's not going to win anything else. (Unless Imelda Staunton wins for best actress, in which case my whole ballot is fucked.)

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, can anyone explain to me why Before Sunset is up for Best Adapted Screenplay? What's it adapted from?

Apparently, because it is based on the story of Before Sunrise, which was written by Linklater and Kim Krizan, but not co-written by Krizan this time around, Krizan and Linklater technically originated the characters, and thus it is adapted.

It's pretty weird, but that's why.

Oscar Nightmare story:

So I've been dating this girl and she invites me to an Oscar party. I inform her that I actually sort of care about watching it and that I'd just assume watch it on my roommates high-definition monster TV. Then I feel bad and decide to go. I arrive at the apartment and immediately see that there's a small TV and then a projector onto the wall. There's a white sheet for a screen, but the wall is painted lime green which means that everything has a green tint a la The Matrix. Fine, whatever. I arrive on time and am excited about watching Chris Rock, however, they are not watching the Oscars but are instead watching Cheaters and Tivo-ing in order to skip commercials. This is slightly exasperating because I usually enjoy commercials during the Oscars or the Superbowl. Fine, whatever. Finally, about half an hour in, the woman of the house presses the magic Tivo button and the Oscars start. I immediatly realize that the idiot whose head has been obscuring about 10% of the projected image is not going to move his head. I don't know any of these people so I bite my tongue, hoping he'll realize how rude it is to block a portion of the screen that everyone is watching! He never does. I glare at him and his girlfriend who I think senses something and tells him. He moves his head slightly about an hour in, but keeps blocking it despite the fact that he would have to move his chair only a couple inches. Another couple sound retarded when they're speaking. The guy just keeps yelling out "The Aviator sucks!" I stopped counting by the time he had said this forty times... His girlfriend spoke in a goo-goo-ga-ga voice the entire time and I wanted to strangle her. She started talking to me and I basically showed her the side of my head because I was trying to watch the show. She didn't get it and talked to me for 10 minutes about how she had been up since 3:30 am - lady, it's not my problem, shut up. Additionally, everyone else was talking over everything and the only sound was coming out of one small corner of the room (from the small TV).

BUT THE WORST THING WAS - the woman controlling the Tivo fast forwarded through every acceptance speech, every introduction, every tribute, every song etc saying mean things about everyone. She was the most mercenary, joyless, awful person I have ever experienced. It was impossible to watch the show because of her fast forwarding and rewinding and she never ever asked anyone if they cared if she skipped something.

I informed my date that this was unacceptable and she basically said she didn't understand why I had a problem with it. I stuck around because I didn't want to embarrass her by leaving. However, when the Tivo person caught up with the actual live broadcast, she switched to some show on HBO called Unscripted in order to store up fast-forward time! I immediately got up and said I had work to do and left without even making eye contact, my friend walked me out and we agreed to talk later. I then went home and fully enjoyed the last three awards.

Now, I have been to many Oscar parties and enjoy people talking and making fun of the show, but this experience was beyond the pale. I just couldn't deal with it. I spoke with my friend later on the phone, and she still couldn't understand my problem with the show. This happened before when we were supposed to see a movie with her friend, but her friend was 40 minutes late and they still wanted to see the movie. The ushers didn't even want to seat us and I didn't want to go in, but she basically said, she couldn't understand my problem. She said on the phone that we shouldn't go to see movies or shows anymore because of my problems! Combined with that, the outlook for our potential relationship doesn't look good at all.

If anyone read this entire thing, thank you.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

She doesn't sound very considerate, that's for sure. I probably would have left a long time before you did, I don't have a lot of patience for people like that.

spencer, i'm afraid this girl might suck.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Spencer, I definitely couldn't deal with that, either. I got a bit annoyed when my friends were talking over the Star Jones red-carpet interviews!

Actually, I sorta hate watching DVDs with a group of people, because some chucklehead always has to make lame jokes or commentary that distracts me from the movie. It's one thing if we rent something for the express purpose of laughing at it and not really paying attention, but there are some people who will pull this shit no matter what.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

spencer, make sure you let her borrow a large amount of money next.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

She said on the phone that we shouldn't go to see movies or shows anymore because of my problems!
I think this may be a giant red light, flashing.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

im sorry, i don't care how great you are, if you don't get remotely riled up by people talking during inopportune moments at a movie, we have a fundamental compatibility problem.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I get kind of pissy when people I live with talk on their phones without moving into another room of the house while I am watching a tv show or movie. I mea, I kind of have every phone conversation like I am planning a major drug deal or figuring how to hide my neighbor's body.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The talking was bad, but I really enjoy clever comments during awards shows. However, it was so inane and incessant that I thought I was going to just rip the screen apart. That said, the absolute worst thing about it was that f*cking Tivo nonsense!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The commercials were better than the actual show!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Clever comments are fun, of course -- I mean, I made my fair share of Adam Duritz jokes the other night -- but just as long as you're not yammering over something that someone else actually wants to see.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Tivo is the incurable channel flipper's greatest gift. I used to have a roommate who couldn't stick with any channel longer than about five or ten minutes. There's no particular reason for this behavior, I think it's just a habit at this point, but it fits in with his controlling personality. I also think there's a sense that there might be, somewhere in those 500 channels, something better, or more worth watching, and the channel flipping is like this endless and never-completed quest to find that Best Thing and be able to rest. Like eventually he'll find the secret channel that has a man in a black suit intoning instructions on how to hail the secret space shuttle that makes daily trips to the Planet Good Times for Those in the Know. Or, you know, Monster Garage if that's on. Because the truly twisted thing about this mentality is that mediocre TV is actually preferable, because it makes flipping away from it easier.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the entire thing. I work with mentally ill/developaly disabled people and I had to YELL at them to turn the channel from pro wrestling to the Oscars. I told them I would withhold their medication until such time as they made the right choice - MY CHOICE! I only saw the first two hours before driving home and going online to see who else won.
I Hated the awards given to groups onstage - i think, if they are going to do this, they need to be able to, camera -wise,focus on the person(s) who are nominated, instead of grouping them. The awards given from weird places in the audience is just bad.
Chris Rock stumbled at times, and I know it is because free speech is being destroyed every day in our great, wonderful democracy. I wish he had the chance to really let it rip. I loved the interviews at the Magic Johnson multiplex.
Fashion-wise: Everyone was toned down - or didn't show up at all. Cate Blanchett was perfect in her gown. I thought Hilary Swank looked great - show off those muscles, gal! (of course, Imelda deserved the award - but whatever.)
Renee Z. looked great from her throat to her toes. Lose the hair, sister! She is too apple cheeked and pink to handle black hair.
Martin Scorcese was wearing serial killer glasses. And he directed "Goodfellas". Hmmm...
Star Jones should be led to the celebrity "gate of no return" asap. Her giant, weird face scares me. She's like Divine, but black.
Melissa and Joan Rivers are an insult to Jews and Christians and Muslims and all others who claim to have taste.. The Jew schtick can be funny - but not in this form. I did not watch them this year. I would have, probably, just to make myself very angry. But acid reflux denies me the opportunity to indulge in "Live" appearances.

With that red dress, I thought she was going for a White Stripes look!

I loved the interviews at the Magic Johnson multiplex.

It was kinda funny, but I was sort of bothered by it, too. I think the subtext we're meant to read is a humorous view of cultural differences and maybe even a jab at the Academy's relevance -- look, none of these people, who represent a large segment of the population, even saw any of the nominated movies! But I couldn't help also reading into it, especially when White Chicks was referenced, "Black people lack good taste in film and would rather sit through shit like White Chicks than the movies that we all know, because we're watching the Oscars right now, are superior."

I'd have left as soon as I realized we weren't going to watch the Oscars in real-time. Fuck this whole TiVo business. I couldn't care less if the lady would've been embarrassed.

This is why I am single.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer should have gaffled that woman's TiVo on the way out, then he could have watched all the shit she fast forwarded through when he got home.

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a nice little Oscar party with pizza and soda and cookies. We watched all the pre-show hoopala, the Barbara Walters stuff, and the full awards. Spencer, you can come to my party next year.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

From one of my favorite people in the world, Sarah:

"You already know the answer. This relationship will not--cannot--work. I'm trying to deal with the notion that when her friends show up 40 minutes late for a movie and you're upset, that it's "your problem." And I can't quite wrap my mind around the idea that you'd invite people over for an *OSCAR PARTY* and fast-forward through the speeches and introductions!. What else is there to watch?! I assume, that since you were watching Cheaters at the opening, that you didn't watch the pre-show Joan Rivers, so I'm baffled as to these people's investment in it at all. And the man with the head shadow is too much. I love that you were just glaring and surly the whole time. They probably just hated you--I love that.

But to return--the relationship cannot work. How can you even have a
relationship if movies and shows are off-limits? I'm not familiar with such a relationship. You need to cut your losses and get out now. This woman's horrible friends are one thing, but she seems to endorse their behavior. Fundamental divide.

I'm also just totally disgusted with that blatant misuse of Tivo. A
force for such good used for such evil. Unconscionable.

-Sarah

PS, The Aviator Sucks!"

I would agree if Chris Rock had not already established a sort of "black" theme to his hosting. "Barbershop" "Laundromat" "Parking lot" "Check Cashing Place". It just seemed like part of his riff - and it was very funny.
It is interesting to note that Morgan Freeman won his first Oscar, after many nominations, for playing a wise old grizzled black guy. Wasn't he the wise old black guy in another movie? Oh, and he was the wise old black guy servant in "Driving Miss Cracker". Can someone in hollywood PLEASE allow him to be retarded and sexy - like, um Tom Cruise?
The stereotype of black males is slowly being reformed. But the idea of "wise old darkie" crops up all the time. "The Green Mile" is a particularly glaring and awful example - large black male as savant.
And, in most action adventure films, you know from the first bite of popcorn that the black guy and the nerd are going to die.
I think you could go to a multiplex and get similar answers from white people. Bad taste is color blind. Redneck kids wearing hip-hop fashion and sporting swastikas probably loved "Saw".
You know what I want? A Black James Bond. Samuel Jackson, perhaps?

aimurchie (aimurchie), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I would agree if Chris Rock had not already established a sort of "black" theme to his hosting.

That's the thing, though -- because it's Chris Rock, he's able to get away with it.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

He's not getting away with anything. He's walking away from a loose career into a highly edited, and watched, performance.
We differ on the multi-plex bit - I thought it was funny, and you didn't. Chris Rock pushed some boundaries - thank God - but mostly he pushed black vs. white. A boundary that needs to be pushed because Hollywood would never market "The Aviator" to South Central. because, y'now, a movie about an eccentric guy who became a millionaire wouldn't resonate. I think Snoop Dogg and Puffy might argue against that. They are all about Howard Hughes - white suits, white hats, a demand for cleansing products.
The most frightening thing of all, politically, is an upsurge in the minority vote. This is felt by both houses of Congress.
But what if that voice was, just for a minute, considered outside of politics and rhetoric? What if being black wasn't even a consideration?
i am very much off thread; sorry. What's the point, again? Alison

aimurchie (aimurchie), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

A boundary that needs to be pushed because Hollywood would never market "The Aviator" to South Central.

See, I think this is an interesting point, and possibly one that Rock was trying to make! But I fear it was hidden among other potential subtexts. And you'll note that I said earlier that I still thought it was funny -- just somewhat problematic.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you should invite her over for a Cheaters party and then meet her at the door in some state of undress with a half-naked woman lounging behind you. When she gets mad, tell her it's her problem and she needs to deal with it if she wants the relationship to work.
