More to the point, I think humans have (d)evolved to the point where standard mammalian mating traditions and rituals just don't apply as much anymore. People don't HAVE to be as committed anymore, because people are learning to live life and enjoy it enough (and i stress "enough") without being co-dependent on some other significant other.. and the resources for humans to live independently, alone, and without much misery for a majority of their lifespans are plentiful... whereas other animals don't know any better, for lack of a kinder phrase.

Relationships have become more of a social status dynamic than a basic-necessity-of-life dynamic -- very generally speaking. I'm not saying people who seek relationships on the latter terms are being hypocritical... but I do believe that most people's senses of being miserable and lonely when single are almost wholely media and, hence, socially driven. Of course, our bodies by instinct occasionally want to be near a warm human being consistently too, but -- again -- there are ways to almost (and i stress "almost") supplement this without requiring a long-term relationship.

Take this with a grain of salt. I'm only stating this from my own body and mind. Obviously, other bodies and minds are wired very differently. I'm probably one of "the fucked up ones."

I'm not saying humans are happier than other animals in this regard. Instinct, much like ignorance, can be bliss.
