Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Oval?

(I don't know how to play this game - or if indeed there are any rules at all.)

emil.y (emil.y), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Ealing Common

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

(there are lots of rules - but don't worry, people will explain them as they go along)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Leicester Square???

(When do I get to go "Mornington Crescent!" and have lots of comfortable middle-class people laugh with me?)

emil.y (emil.y), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Snaresbrook

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

I thought we were playing post-war rules. So no Snarebrook or anything in the LCC.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Stanmore!

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Pretty brave to invoke Middlesex so early there Sam.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, good move - brave but it will probably pay off later.

Wapping

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I AM PAUL MCCARTNEY!

oh, wait.

umm.

Paddington.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Aldersgate?

(From now on the question mark should be implied with everything I post - I'm just trying to remember tube station names and seeing if anyone tells me how this thing actually works.)

emil.y (emil.y), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Pete, I assume you mean OUTSIDE the LCC? And anyway, that's the inter-war rules. Immediate post-war rules exclude Camberwell and anything on the Northern Heights. Essex beyond Loughton is left ambiguous.

Anyway, taking Aldersgate as a valid play (we're not in time for Barbican): Monument(for Bank).

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Stockwell?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

(???????????????????????????????????????)

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Going South after a Walbrook Opening. Like it.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Trafalgar Square

(again, if Aldersgate is valid play, that must be too)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Trafalgar Square's good, esp. on a Tuesday.

Hyde Park

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Mansion House, suckas!

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Bah! That's messed up my plans completely.

Stamford Brook

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but shunting to Trafalgar Square at this stage is questionable tactics. Still, Clapham North.

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Camden Town

emil.y (emil.y), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Christ.

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Great Portland Street seems the only option now

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Nah, there were actually plenty of choices there - the Central Line would have been tempting for me, in fact.

Westbourne Park.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Assuming this isn't an Amersham reversal.

Mudchute

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Was that a move or was that a suggestion that Great Portland Street is the only possible move. Because I can see an audicious, yet 1980's championship winning move that is just availible (off-peak mind).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Hang on, I thought we were playing immediate post-war rules!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

I assumed Great Portland Street *was* a move - as you can presumably tell from my response.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Trousers.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Hang on, are we in spoon?

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

23rd Van Alst. So there.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

No, we're not in spoon until someone invokes a Brixton Muddle.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, much x-posting there which is one of the reasons why internet games are regulated by the International Body. I think to avoid confusion, inder the 2004 code on internet multiplayer games of Mornington Crescent (including Mornington DOOM) the last move that can be accepted was Camden Town: which means clearly we are not in spoon (yet).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

This thread is a handy summary list of PEOPLE TO AVOID FOREVER at least.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

In that case...

Borough

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Euston, and your mother.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Tricky to get off the Northern Line here, without ceding advantages. Unless...

Green Park?

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Aren't you in knip? That rules out moving West of the Northern Line...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Theydon Bois

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeh, that's true. So no green park.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

I remember reading a comic where people played this. I didn't get the joke then, but I got it now... Is it actually funny to pull this on people? We have nothing similar in Finland.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

lucky, lucky finland.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I think you'll find that doesn't apply before bank holiday weekends aldo.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Quite.

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

what the hell is this game?!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

I think it does if the DLR has been opened.

x-post to Onimo

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

No, that's very true under the revised 1992 rules. Green Park is in.

In which case, Embankment.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

John Wayne & Castle

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Unfortunately, that forces me to Dollis Hill.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Neverwhere

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure Lex is QUITE intelligent enought to work out the rules for himself. We're annotating it as we go along, FFS!

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand this game either Nathalie.

PROUD TO BE ANNA MERKIN (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Nathalie, it's a joke played on bystanders. You aren't supposed to get it, that's the whole point.

(Sorry.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Elephant & Castle - blocked the stealth, get in!

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

It's actually a bit broken round the back. Kennington.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

No-one should ever be forced to Dollis Hill.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

ooh, challenging, stockwell perhaps?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

The diagonal means... Olympia?

Gosh, that was uncertain.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Unless I'm misreading the 1995 Loop & Shunt Committee Minutes I'm going to need to go back until someone splits a blue diagonal.

Dollis Hill

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Bah, I knew something interesting would develop if I left.

Bayswater.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Phone rings and when I get back my golden setup has been left wide open...

Elm Park

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I think I still don't understand :(

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Good blocking move there.

New Cross Gate

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

the lex, whatever you do, don't google looking for rules.

grimly fiendish, forced to listen to too much "comedy" on radio 4 during his for, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Swiss Cottage.

Although that's a bit risky.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I'd have said that was *very* risky at this point in the game. Because, that leaves me open to do...

Marble Arch!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

But... that bisects on the Victoria line.

Chancery Line is the only next move.

Ah, I see what you're doing now.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

"lane", obviously.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

WOuld it be cheating then (since it is an open, freeform game under the Geneva Convention) for me to go:

Edgware Road...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

And then

MORNINGTON CRESCENT!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Well played. I saw it in two, and was assuming FP was waiting to take it.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Well played and got.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Not cheating but hardly in the spirit of a Game Of Gentlemen!

Still, well played (grumle mumble)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Nice going. Well played.

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeh, I was gonna say it was nasty going to Edgeware Road there. Mind you, the IMCC allow that kind of thing, though why they haven't stopped it after all these years I'll never know . . .

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

No no no - disallow moves like that and you might as well not play with competitive spirit at all

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Well done there Pete. Damn work getting in the way.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

i don't see how you got edgware rd to mornington crescent at all there, not on post-war rules anyhow.

Ned Ragget In S&M Gear With His Nob Hanging Out Spanking Me, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I tried to slip an Elm Park in between but you got me, Pete

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Ned Ragget In S&M Gear With His Nob Hanging Out Spanking Me

I think(/hope!) you've left a participle dangling there (amongst other things).

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I do feel a little bit dirty, but all's fair in love and Morningtom Crescent eh?

Quite happy to sit out the rematch though, and you could always use Parisian rules to stop consecutive posting (also allowing the Eurostar as well though its a bit like those 3D games of chess they play on Star Trek then).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

And the RER is a nightmare

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

(Oh and in answer to Ned Ragget In S&M Gear With His Nob Hanging Out Spanking Me let me just say the 27.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't like consecutive posting, but Parisian Rules are a bore. We might as well play NY rules or something. No need to get ridiculous about it.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I really don't want to play under NY rules. Spelling everything incorrectly is time-consuming and wasteful.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Not to mention winning by saying Mornington Curve!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Better than Matinton Croissant.

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:38 (twenty years ago)

It is on the sabbath ... but we're playing online, which tradition says uses the abridged rules for playing via letter. That means yr move is invalid, which allows me to:

I'm going to start off using the Copenhagen strategy (developed by former MC World Champion, Damo Copenhagen) and take White City, taking three yellow tokens in the process.

classic opening moves but i feel some lateral thinking is required here: BERMONDSEY

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

That was a sneaky move. Reminds me of the 1977 Jubilee Team Challenge!

I'm going to pull out one of the big guns a bit early now - Holborn, and I believe you are now in knid unless you can perform a reverse circuit next round!

EsteBAN LOUIS JAGGER (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 10:16 (nineteen years ago)

Oval is allowed there if you read the 1964 Amendments To The Tournament Rules - however, it does allow right-hand-running when not on bank holidays. So I'm going to say White City.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

We Are The Village Green Psychiatric Society (kate), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

BEFORE you go gallivanting around Zones 1-4 with your blessed Oyster Card, remember that there are speed restrictions operating on all lines until the 18th of December, and anybody caught above the legal limit will be sent to North Weald station, whence to escape one must discover a means of time-travel back to the 1990's when it was still an operating LU station.

After all that, I have little choice but to go for the triple-twenty: Ravenscourt Park.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

The Oyster thing is going to cause a schism similar to the 1888 Knox riot which led to the second constitutional congress. And I don't think we want to go back to that. Going forward: South Ruslip

Fascinating. When Malin-Bakerman demobbed after his long and gallant service, he took on a similar gambit. (There’s an engaging and plagiaristic account of it in volume 2 of Mccafferty). The lesson there, of course, was to close off the Eastern routes by all means necessary. Bromley-by-Bow

Wm Binuche, Wednesday, 27 September 2023 08:49 (two years ago)

I just happen to have my 1987 edition of McCafferty by my bedside (don't judge me, I'm an insomniac) and I can't find any reference to it. Do you think it was edited out?

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Wednesday, 27 September 2023 09:12 (two years ago)

Was it McCafferty or Mccafferty? The difference is small but significant.

In any event, it's all covered in Burton, too. Surely you've read Burton. It comes after the exegesis on the Portishead Convention which, as I'm sure you know, formed the foundation of the modern game.

Wm Binuche, Wednesday, 27 September 2023 21:36 (two years ago)

By the way, an '87 McCafferty with original dust wrappers in fine condition will fetch a pretty penny. There was one at Maggs a few years ago, but it was too dear for me.

Also, as poke holder, you know that Rule 7 demands your reply. We had that excellent ASP from MaresNest; I think that means the nudge is to you. Did I get that right?

Wm Binuche, Wednesday, 27 September 2023 21:59 (two years ago)
