The Trayce 21st Century US/Canada wandering tour (a possible plan)

(Hey why don't we have a travel category? Anyway...)

So. Lately, I've been seriously contemplating a major holiday to Canada and the US next year, with a specific purpose - to travel around and meet up/hang with a whole heap of ILXors and see a ton of places while I'm at it.

This is the thing: I don't drive. I'd probably be doing this on my own if I did it (this is all speculative for the moment anyway). I'd probably want to cruise around on, I dunno, trains and busses, rather than fly too much.

Is this a completely insane idea? Should I do it? I mean would anyone be interested in meeting me at all?

Places I'm thinking of hitting up, due to there being lovely ILXors I'd like to meet there:

Montreal
Toronto
NYC
San Fran
LA
Boston
Chicago
and err... Bloomington (trust Tep to live somewhere out of the way)

Obviously I'd see more if I knew where to start! And more people if I knew where to go, etc ;) So dont anyonebe upset I left your city out - I'm sure Ive forgotten places.

Lets call this a daydream for now, but my ILX peeps - what do you think? What are some ideas? Hit me up with inspiration :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Avoid the LA/OC area ILXors, they are evil smelly creatures.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Plus, the whole Wee Britain thing.

KSTFUNS (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

That'd be all those koala tacos you ate, Ned ;P

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah I should also point out, I'm only thinking US/Canada as Ive already been to the UK before...

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Unfortunately, with the price of rail travel in the US, you might do better to hire an albino gorilla to chauffer a solid-platinum cadillac.

Greyhound bus is quite affordable, but you better get ready for some genuine on-the-road populism. Years ago, Greyhound was ridden by a large segment of the population, including unaccompanied children and little old grannies, but now it's largely the poor, and some poor travellers as well. Also, they've sliced the number of towns they stop at, though all the cities you've listed will have terminals.

andy --, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

(That said, I still ride the 'Hound every so often, mostly to visit my otherwise unaccessible small hometown... lots of fresh-out-of-prison passengers these days.)

andy --, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

If you make it to LA/San Fran, might as well head north to Portland and Seattle, too.

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

It should be fairly easy to get around without a car in some or all of most of the biggest cities. LA is a major exception, but it's not impossible, especially if you have chauffeurs to assist. Trains (Amtrak) and buses (Greyhound/Peter Pan/"chinatown" buses) are good ways to get between cities in the Northeast (between NYC and Boston, DC, Montreal, etc.), and the rail scenery might be worth the long distances along the West Coast, but unless you have a lot of time, you probably want to fly between further-flung destinations. While it might be dominated by retirees and/or middle-aged Asian tourists, Gray Line Tours, a tour bus service, can get you from some major cities to some destinations you might otherwise need to drive to.

Setting aside transportation difficulties, and ignoring the people factor, my place thoughts: I would definitely go for NY and LA. I would also go for at least one of Chicago and SF (neither of which I've been to), but SF might be more similar to alternative possible destinations. Boston would be well worthwhile, but inessential or more similar to alternatives. Bloomington might not be my choice, but somewhere heartlandish would be interesting. Some other options you might consider: a national park or two (Grand Canyon, Yellowstone/Tetons, Mt. Rainier), rural New England (a detour from Boston or NYC), the Pacific Northwest (Seattle or Vancouver), the Mid-Atlantic (DC/Baltimore/Williamsburg/the Delmarva Peninsula/the Outer Banks?), the Southwest (Santa Fe? Austin?), the Mississippi (New Orleans? Memphis?), and the South (Savannah? Nashville?).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Air & Space museum in Wash DC.

Good times!

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

If you make it to LA/San Fran, might as well head north to Portland and Seattle, too.

Hell yeah! :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

gabbneb: hey thanks those are some great ideas. I always forget about the obvious touristy things; I admit I'm mainly interested in seeing the big cities, but I'd be remiss in missing things like the Canyon and Yellowstone and the Rockies and such.

The non driving thing is going to be a bitch - I dont drive at all so I cant even hire a car - I guess if I ever do this I'll be hoping a couple of lovely ILXors will be able to ferry me around in their home towns, and for the rest I'll hoof around on planes and busses =)

Ah, its all a pipe dream for now, but I wanted to see if it was feasible :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

i'd add seattle to this list, for definite

i'm thinking about doing something similar. i have been to the US a couple times, but never done a coast to coast greyhound trip. i'm interested in the iowa/nebraska/wyoming/idaho leg, for the kind of photographs i like to take. i quite fancy cutting north at mpls and going through western canada instead of america thoughj

when next year are you going?

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

If I did go, I'd probably go on either edge of summer - late spring or early autumn (to avoid the worst heat and high season costs). If I go it may also depend on wether various people I'd like to meet will be free to hang out, as well.

This'll all hinge on wether I still have the money I have now - I mean if I wanted to, I could walk outside now and go to the airport and fly to NYC, but practical things like work prevail ;)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

april/may is a great time to go. im not sure i will be able to wait that long, and am looking at february.

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget Wall Drug! And House on the Rock in the Wisconsin Dells!

Too bad you're not driving, otherwise you can't take advantage of a site like this: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Avoid the LA/OC area ILXors, they are evil smelly creatures.

I object!

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah for once in my life I am very much regretting not knowing how to drive. And that unfortunately isn't going to change (I have a pathalogical fear of driving cars).

Heh maybe I can learn to ride a motorbike and cruise round on a Virago or something =)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

xpost hehehe luna. You better believe you're one of the first people to meet on my list!

Man, the more I talk about this the more I want to do it, and its all a bit scary really.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

good luck with it! My folks live about an hour from Tep, maybe I could figure out how to drive you over there, esp if you go through st louis. Keep us updated!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

If I'm not a bum living off the streets (a distinct possibility), I could def. drive you around the Bay Area!

Wolfcastleee (Leee), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Amtrak has a 30-day US and Canada pass, off-peak, for $543 - that's pretty excellent, compared to flying. If you land in LA, you can take the train all the way up to Vancouver. From Portland, you can take the train over to Chicago. From Chicago, you can get all over the east coast.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

April/May or September/October would generally be best (but a bit early/late for anywhere really mountainous)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Just poking around on the Amtrak site - non-US and non-Canadian residents can get a 30 day national US railpass for $385 off/$550 on peak.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Aw teeny, thats very sweet! And I'd like to come see St Louis too :)]

Man, this could turn into a very long winded exercise hehe ;)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

I object!

Luna is the exception, of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Jaq those Amtrak monthly passes are one thing I was thinking of for sure, and 300-500 bucks is great value really.

Unless, flying internally is pathetically cheap in the US? like

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Whoops it killed my bracked. Like, less than $100 one way cheap, I meant to say.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Ive already been to the UK before...

Pah, if you've not been to Ormskirk you've not been to the UK

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Unless, flying internally is pathetically cheap in the US?

Given all where you want to go, the train option sounds the best.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Flying, it can be horrendously expensive, though sometimes you can get excellent deals between major cities. With flying, you can get a good deal if you book weeks in advance, stay over a Saturday, etc. I think the train pass would give you more flexibility and maybe let you see more of the country.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

that rail pass is for coach only, and upgrades apply if you want a sleeper car. it seems useful if you're actually taking 2 weeks or more and making several stops without great distances between them, but it's not worth the time if you have a week or 10 days and want to get from the West Coast to Chicago or NYC.

provided you buy sufficiently in advance, you can fly coast-to-coast for as low as about $200 round-trip, and between Western cities for under $100 one way.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

People have good and bad opinions of Southwest Airlines, but flying into Oakland (Bay Area, SF, etc.) from pretty much any spot on the West Coast one way costs around $100 or so at most, if you act early enough. From Oakland airport you can easily take Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) into San Francisco, which takes about 40 minutes, and it costs around $4 or so (including the Oakland Airport Bus To BART station fee).

Oakland being the midpoint of the West Coast, you could hop up to either Seattle/Portland or L.A via Southwest.. Speaking for PacNW, you can take an Amtrak bus/train between Seattle/Portland and Seattle/Vancouver roundtrip for around $40-$50 or so. Other busing options might be cheaper...

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I advise against any major train only because long haul Amtrak trains up and down the west coast are NOTORIOUSLY late... I'm talking an average of 5 hours late from Seattle to L.A. or vice versa. I'd take one-shot bus rides as opposed to waiting for a long-trip train at a station (i.e. the Coastal Starlight on the West Coast) Just a warning.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Basically, iDonut and gabbneb want to fly and destroy the atmosphere while Jaq and I want you to take the train and destroy the land. Solution = skateboard.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Some trains may give you worthwhile views of countryside you would otherwise need to drive to, but generally I would err on the side of spending the time in your destination, rather than in transit.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

I have a romantic view of train travel because I've never done any in the US. I live on the Empire Builder route and really should take the train down to Portland and back to get it out of my system.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Oh if I do this - if I do it - I want to take a couple months, at least, of slowly travelling around.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

hey trayce! it would be great to have you visit NYC!! you should also go to see philly and baltimore if you come (both are in between NYC and DC, and have ILXors)!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Philly was another place I thought of! And I have to meet you of course, Tad! :)

(that IS the idea of this plan after all - maybe no one wants to actually meet me, sniffle)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Come to Toronto! We will ply you with liquor give you big hugs!!!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Trayce, if you take the train from Portland to Chicago, you must stay with us in Washington's wine country for a bit! (shameless plying with liquor - but there's not much else to recommend the area)

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

Canada is the main reason behind this whole plan, Tant :) My ex fiancee lives in Montreal, and I was going to go there a couple years back, but then we broke up. So I still dearly want to go, and seeing as like, you and Dyson and Sundar and Sean are all in that Torontoey area (is that right?) then hey, how can I sat no to my northern twins =)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Washington has wine country? Cool! I spose that makes sense if NoCal does as well.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

Ahem, we prefer NorCal. Nocal is what our Southern counterpart barbarians call us.

Wolfcastleee (Leee), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Hee whoops :D See, I'm learning ;)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

(wait, where do you live, Leee? I just realised I have no idea)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Many wines from Washington (Merlot and Riesling esp) and Oregon (Pinot Noir esp) are on par with or better than those from Northern and Central California. There are also (typically much lesser) wineries in some other US states - New York, Virginia, I think Ohio

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

I went to Vancouver about three years ago and purchased me one of those 30 day Greyhound passes. I had a fantastic time considering the budget I was on - I saw Seattle, Portland, LA, San Franciso, San Diego and Vegas before I finally gave in to air travel when I realised it was a three day ride to Chicago. You meet some really interesting people on the bus and if you travel overnight you save on accommodation and wake up in a new city in the morning. Plus you will feel like Jack Kerouac.

wombatX (wombatX), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Alas we have no Easy Jet, but Southwest can be cheapish, true.

andy --, Wednesday, 9 November 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Man this is going to be a massive to plan project, haha. :/

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Just don't do this in early to mid April 2006 (as I'm going to be heading down to Aus and NZ around that time.)

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

(I need Trayce to be there to see me plowed... haha)

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha woah no way - you're coming HERE? Fantastic! Come to Melbourne! You'll like it. Its like, Seattle with better coffee and no rain ;P

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe not, but whatever =)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Melbourne is #1 on my Aus visit, Sydney for sure as well.

There's far too many cities in NZ I want to visit. I want to go to them all.

Anyway, no more thread hijacking.

TRAYCE IN U.S. TRIP PLANNING!

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't know who is more in trouble now - me, or you lot.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Trayce, one thing to keep in mind is that the U.S. is really insanely huge. And Canada is, technically, bigger, but not like you'd notice.

Anyway, how long were you planning on giving yourself for this?

Amtrak is unreliable schedulewise but is easily the prettiest way of travelling if you're into countryside. Just don't pick a route with any transfers if you can and who cares if it's three or four hours late?

Obviously I'm going to push for Portland. And you can get that train Jaq is talking about at either Portland or Seattle and take it to Chicago.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

Trayce, one thing to keep in mind is that the U.S. is really insanely huge.

You mean like Australia? ;) (it's around the same size as the continental U.S. I think, but just a tad smaller)

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

Heh yeah Donut's right Chris :) I mean I appreciate that that is an issue - but I grew up in Australia. A 10 hour bus trip, or 2 days to get somewhere, is not unusual travel to me.

I'm not gonna try and cram this into a few weeks, this - and this is why its a bit of a pipe dream - would take a couple months I reckon.

I mean, I want to spend quality time with my peeps!

(Also, I am now so gonna get you drunk when you get here DB, haha you are in trouble!)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

Heheheh. Treat him well, Trayce, or I shall lecture you fiercely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh I'll treat him FINE dont you worry errr wait did I say that out loud?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

you and Dyson and Sundar and Sean are all in that Torontoey area

I'm actually in Buffalo now. (Geographically, it's not *too* far from Toronto but the Greyhound service makes it a 6-hr trip on a good day.) I'd love to meet if you do make it down here but I don't really recommend making a special trip. I'm back in Toronto and Ottawa once in a while though so I might get to catch you anyway. It sounds like it'll be a fun trip in any case.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Trayce. Come to Canada (pictured 100% accurately below). Don't bother with Texas.
http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/graphics/canada_2.0.gif

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Heh, I better be getting a big-ass tuition refund cheque if that's accurate!

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

(and be able to spell it "cheque")

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

I've never been there, but my understanding is that Australia is basically a circle with cities dotting the edge and not much outside of Alice Springs in the middle. Compare that with Canada, which is one (or two) lines stretching out with railroad-mandated cities placed at even intervals along it.

Now compare both of those ideas with the United States, which can be described as a grid (one that gets denser in the east). The interstate highway system is the clearest manifestation of this.

So we can describe Canada as being one-dimensional (basically) and Australia as having one circular dimension, but the US exists in two dimensions.

Which makes touring it especially difficult.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

i thought only points were one-dimensional!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that is true, the big logistical issue I'm gonna have with this is simply getting everywhere - fitting it all in (fnarr). This may turn out to be a bastard thing and I'll end up just going to LA and Toronto and giving up haha. We'll see.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

If the universe is a point, it's a zero-dimensional universe -- zero axes. The line has one axis, the plane has two, etc.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

So you're saying if Trayce were to visit a zero dimensional universe, getting around wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

She'd already be there!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

Solution: all reality is defined by my relation to the rest of the universe, which all rotates around me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

"Is this movie in zero-D?"
"No, but your face is!"

(so, so sorry)

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Have you been drinking Kim?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

no, but i guess your asking means that i must be tired enough to go to bed now.

p.s. you coming to FAP on friday?

p.p.s. Trayce, if you visit us i will make you food, for free! (no poison)

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

I will vouch for the mostly non-poisonous nature of her food!

And as for friday - most likely but not certainly.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

I'll hold you to that Kim! =) (youre in tronno too yes?)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

if you've not been to Ormskirk you've not been to the UK

Or Grimsby!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

I stayed in Rugely! If you even know where that is heh. It was near Stafford. We went to Alton Towers! That was fun. Lots of chavs.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Obviously that wasnt like my choice of prime UK visiation. I was seeing my then-boyfriend.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

And you can get that train Jaq is talking about at either Portland or Seattle and take it to Chicago.

Shhh! I wasn't gonna mention the Seattle one, because only the Portland leg comes through Pasco.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

trayce, you betcha

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, if Trayce does not visit LA and OC I will pout and be annoyed. So there!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

MS/AR/MO/TN regional FAP, eh?

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh noes, I cannot have Ned pouting =)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

I would also go for at least one of Chicago and SF (neither of which I've been to), but SF might be more similar to alternative possible destinations.

This is crazy! How is Chicago (which I like and really enjoy visiting) not a larger, more interesting version of a lot of Midwest cities and SF not, errrr, completely unlike any other city?

Arturo B, Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, back to Trayce's planning. Never mind me.

Arturo, Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Chicago is a larger, more interesting version of cities Trayce probably wouldn't have much interest going to. SF is larger than but equally interesting as cities Trayce probably would want to go to. If you're already going to Chicago and LA, Seattle, for instance, might be more distinctive than SF. Anyway, it's academic, because she probably has time to go to all of these places.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

FWIW I'd like to see both Sf and Chi. And yeah gab is right - IF this ever happens, I want to have enough time to really see lots.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

(which is kinda why its only an if...)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

I'll add that this all kinda depends on WHEN you want to do this.

Keep in mind that if you do this in, say, January 2006, you'll be escaping extreme heat only to experience fatal cold if you decide to visit the upper mid-west, for example.

Late spring (late April to early June) is usually the best time to visit ALL of the continental U.S. if there's any small part of year where that could be said.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah no way I'd do this in your winter. Tho, winter in montreal/toronto would be... interesting (ie, I would not cope, and I would die).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 November 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

You'll want to be here/Montreal in the summer fer sure. Montreal hot = sweater weather in Melbourne.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

if yo udo this, do it in the last two weeks of Jan, so I can see yr magic

anthony, Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

I thought Montreal was really hot in summer? Like, 30degC humid? Thats what my ex used to whine about.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 November 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

It's warm but it's the best place in the world in the summer. Seriously, there are festivals of every sort constantly going on. They shut off the main streets to traffic and they're packed with people.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 10 November 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

If you're already going to Chicago and LA, Seattle, for instance, might be more distinctive than SF.

!!!!!!

I give up!

Arturo B, Thursday, 10 November 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Hahah stop fighting over me, all of you! ;P There's plenty of Milhouse to go around!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 November 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Sundar: yeah, my ex-fiancee used to wax enthusastic about going up to the mont royal park in summer, hanging out watching the tam tams and chilling. It sounded great (and looks so pretty).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 November 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

You think seattle is more like chicago and la than sf? (Xp)

one year passes...
Hmmm. This obviously never happened but there is a chance a cut down version might still be on the cards.

Hey, why is Vancouver Island part of Russia?

M.V., Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm. Mid-Pacific FAP in mid-October, maybe?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

Gonna need a bigger boat.

Trayce, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

See, I was thinking Honolulu (in that I'll be there mid-October, y'see).

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

Aha!

I have to say I've never had the desire to go to hawaii. Also, theres a chance if I do come over, it will be well before October. I'm hoping. Logistics involved, but I at the very least will be in LA and 1-2 other cities.

Trayce, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

Trayce, a question while you're around: have you ever taken the TransAustralian train ride? If so, is it any fun?

M.V., Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

You mean the one from sydney or melbourne across to Perth? That would be the Indian Pacific. I haven't taken it no, but I know some people who have, and it is supposed to be a pretty cool trip. Australia is vast and so very empty - you can move through parts of it for a day or more and see nothing, no towns no people no cars. That train has good sleeper cars and dining and if you liked the desert and the vast open spaces I imagine it'd be a great ride.

Very expensive though.

Trayce, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for the info, Trayce.

M.V., Saturday, 31 March 2007 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

But I will come and visit your fair shores soon America, you better believe it *shakes fist at screen*

Trayce, Saturday, 31 March 2007 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

LA/SoCal is sometimes not at its best in May and June, but the rest of Summer is fantastic. Seattle (and Portland) and especially its/their surroundings, which I'd recommend, are wonderful in July and August, when SF might not be as good. Sept-early Nov are probably best for SF and NY, which are also nice in the spring (when it isn't raining in NY). I'd say go to NY any time even if it can be pretty bad from late July to late August. Avoid DC in the height of Summer, excepting July 4th when the festivities compensate for the heat/humidity. My impression is Chicago's at its best in June, Toronto in the fall. Boston proper might be ideal at peak foliage (around early-mid October?), but spring can be quite nice there too, I think, and Summer's best for the water and the islands.

gabbneb, Saturday, 31 March 2007 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I think late summer/fall in most of the US would probably be gorgeous. I love autumn foliage. Dammit, I wish this was a bit easier for me to work out.

Trayce, Saturday, 31 March 2007 03:32 (nineteen years ago)

LA any time of the year is great. Dammit.

Beth that looks really really pretty!

Uh.. the houses. Not Bob Lee.

Trayce, Saturday, 31 March 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

a suggested way to approach this...

start by picking LA and NY. Then, consider at least one additional destination on the east and/or west coast, as you could add them with relative ease. Flying from LA to SF or Seattle doesn't take particularly long and can be inexpensive if you buy in advance. Traveling from NY to Boston or Philly or DC by rail is very easy. That would give you just one round-trip x-c flight. You could also substitute Toronto and/or Montreal for the East Coast city/cities, or add them. You can travel between either of them and NY by rail in a (likely very long) day, though flying would probably be preferable.

if you go in July or August, I would recommend going to Seattle and/or Boston, both Northern cities on the water. Boston can get humid, but you can walk along the river or the harbor, or get on a boat to the islands. Seattle is dry and beautifully green, and surrounded by mountains and islands that make excellent day trips. Note that the weather in NY isn't always the nicest at this time, but there are lots of outdoor events and indoor air-conditioned attractions to compensate.

if you go in September or October, I would recommend going to San Francisco and considering a side trip to Yosemite (which might take more than a day to really appreciate). you'll probably also want to look for some fall foliage, which is best in New York in mid-to-late October, in Boston in early-to-mid-October, and if you can find a way up into, say, Vermont (take a train?) in late september to early October. this would also be a good time to go to Toronto.

if you go in May, I'd say again to go to SF and consider Yosemite. on the east coast, DC may be a good bet, and consider taking a side trip from there or Philly into Pennsylvania Dutch country, the Southern appalachians or the Blue Ridge mountains. this may also be a good time to go to Montreal. note that LA may be overcast at this time of year, and that it may be a very nice time to be in Chicago, arguably the most American of cities. draw your own conclusions.

honestly, I'm not sure June would be your best bet. it may be foggy in both LA and SF, and it won't yet be the peak season in the pacific northwest. you might consider focusing on the midwest, canada and the east, where it would be a nice time of year to go, as we say, to "the shore" in new jersey or maryland.

gabbneb, Sunday, 1 April 2007 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

Some nice tips, thanks gab :)

Trayce, Sunday, 1 April 2007 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

The other prob with summer is peak season... plane flights argh so pricey. I'm still working out that part.

Trayce, Sunday, 1 April 2007 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

if you do skip ny, i'd say go to toronto (and montreal?) and either sf or chicago

gabbneb, Sunday, 1 April 2007 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

I totaly want to see Montreal and SF for sure, out of everywhere. There's another city I'll be seeing as well, but I'll explain it all later when its sorted.

Trayce, Sunday, 1 April 2007 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

YOU KNOW WHAT THEY DO TO LUNCH-CUTTERS IN THE SOUTH?

Mikey Bidness, Sunday, 1 April 2007 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

that's the most european of canadian cities and perhaps the most pacific rim of american cities. i'd say try to go in may to mid-june or september, as sf can be cool and foggy and montreal humid in the height of summer.

gabbneb, Sunday, 1 April 2007 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Shutup Mikey, seriously.

Trayce, Sunday, 1 April 2007 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway you have to start in LA because we're closer and we rule. Yup.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 1 April 2007 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Well its cheapest to fly there for sure :)

PS: all still theory, this. I can only barely afford it... i need to save, and other matters need sorting out.

Trayce, Sunday, 1 April 2007 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

I AM GOING TO DO THIS THIS YEAR IF IT KILLS ME.

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

how are the savings looking

bouquet brigade (electricsound), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

But, this time the plan is SanFran, NYC, then a couple of points down SEFAP way, with any luck.

How do I shot planning this. Who wants some Trayce action?

xpost: I have a grand in the bank saved up, and I can feasiblyu use my credit card for things - seems I can get a flight for $1500 return or less so thats pretty good. And our $$ is strong.

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

I'm thinking, June, or September. June might be too hot? Cant afford to come any sooner sadly - the original plan was to do this next month! Cos thats when my birthday is.

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

BTW Jim can u change the title to get rid of the 2006 bit? thanking u

Go in September. SF will be warmer and NYC will be cooler.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:32 (fifteen years ago)

Thats good to know. I only want to come sooner because I'm so impatient! I've wanted to do this forever and I want to meet y'all and the logistics are just overwhelming, so.

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

xp which is why I can get away with it. If I didn't have 'er indoors to kick me up the arse I wouldn't do anything tbh.

Basically what I am trying to say is DO THIS THING

tricycle wazoo (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

Aha I see! And yes, I agree.

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

Only reason not going next month is simply dont have the money or any leave. I want to spend a month doing this if possible.

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I get that, these things cost a fortune.

btw if you're able, start buying currency NOW as it's beyond parity again. That won't last what with all the qld destruction and so forth, so.

tricycle wazoo (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

How does one do that? Do you just go to one of those little currency booths?

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

You can get to LA and back for around $1500 return but don't forget that getting over to NYC may cost $$$ depending on when you book. I'd factor in around $500-750 for internal flights if doing it seperate.

It all depends on what you want to do, as yer internal flights can be combined with yer international fare. Let me know if you require further assistance.

Favourite Song, Album and Band? Icehouse. (King Boy Pato), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

So you didn't go before? It looked like luna was looking forward to your trip!!!

Soo yeah, September will be as hot or hotter than June. SF is always pretty temperate, NY is north enough that it'll be reasonable in either month.

w/no hesitation (mh), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah but you're better off going to the ANZ or summat. Check the rate each provider is doing.

We've used these on our last four o/s trips btw: http://www.anz.com/personal/travel-foreign-exchange/travel-money/travel-card/

http://www.anz.com/resources/a/d/adca43804e4a3eec80348b93c5571dd1/1/ANZ8119-Card-USD-%28Green%29.jpg

You get a card, you dump AUD money into it via Bpay and the bank converts it to USD for you.

When you get to the US/CA you use it at ATMs for cash, and you use it to buy stuff in shops like a credit card. Fees are minimised across the board.

When you get home, if there's money still in it just close the account and get it given to you in AUD.

tricycle wazoo (Schlafsack), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

Pato: oh yeah I know I need to factor in the domestic legs too. Not sure how I'd wing it but maybe a hop from SF -> Toronto -> NYC -> then I dunno where else, somewhere more southern for a bit? SEFAP cru styles.

o you didn't go before? It looked like luna was looking forward to your trip!!!
Bwahahahaha.

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

Cyclone Yazoo (Trayce), Monday, 7 February 2011 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not gonna try and cram this into a few weeks, this would take a couple months I reckon.

I want to spend a month doing this if possible.
