POPTIMISM (Popular) - Friday 10th November 2006, The Union Tavern

“Say I’m Your Number One,” sang Princess who was neither a Princess nor achieved a number one. Which means she won’t get played at the next POPTIMISM. Friday 10th will see us return to the lovely Union Tavern (neighbours notwithstanding) and this time we’ll be saying goodbye to Tom (aka DJ Cockfarmer) for a couple of months as fatherhood beckons. And to celebrate this: Tom’s favourite previous baby: CLUB POPULAR. Number One’s ALL NIGHT. The spinning wheel of decades. If it didn’t reach the top, it isn’t in the box. There are guest DJ’s, though I’m buggered if I can remember who they are…
Entry is free, dancing hours are 7-11.30(ish).

We are now confirmed for December, and watch this space for New Years Eve…

(Actually not this space, probably a different space). Start anticipating.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

Princess was on "Let It Be" by Ferry Aid.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

If the guests are who was picked out of the hat, I think it's Meg/Cis/Joe Flyboy, though I am not an official of Poptimism plc.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

Thing is because it's a special Popular night, some or all of them have deferred their guest slot cos they (quite understandably) dont want to waste it on #1s.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

Can I have one then please Tom if no one else wants it? I'd be well up for #1s!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, as I said at the last one, given the choice I'd rather defer... I'll be there, though, of course.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

It is unlikely (though nothings impossible) that we are going to play Ferry Aid either.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

The "wheel" has been sitting forlornly behind my stereo for over a year now and I am looking forward to bringing its misshapen glory back to public view.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

one Princess who did get to no 1 is Miss Ciara Princess Harris!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 October 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

i don't mind playing number ones! all that early-nineties chart rave, sixties bubblegum, ciara's goodies *and* limp bizkit's rollin'! It would feel kind of selfish to have another full-on poptimism set so soon after my last one, anyway.

ampersand, hearts, semicolon (cis), Thursday, 12 October 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

OK, I'll play all the good ones then... ;-)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

keep rollin' rollin' rollin'! :D

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 October 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

meg is at some sort of young person's indie guitar racket for this one, so would definitely like to defer to xmo.

i have informed my cow-orkers of this poptimism, so hopefully a few of them will turn up...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 12 October 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

What a shame "Rawhide" wasn't a number one when it comes to "keep rollin' rollin' rollin'"...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

What a shame "Rawhide" wasn't a number one when it comes to "keep rollin' rollin' rollin'"...

Also that Nurse With Wound track that "sampled" it

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

However, if I got a Club Popular guest slot I might be tempted to devote it to Scottish-only number ones...You Got The Power! I Travel! Sergeant Fury!

(also Caledonia and Flower Of Scotland but we'll pass quickly over those)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha, "Sergeant Fury", I was listning to that only yesterday. Every club everywhere should finish with *AH's rendition of "Tomorrow Belongs to Me"

(*Alex Harvey not Adolf Hitler)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

You should find a way of projecting interesting facts on the wall, like TOTP 2.

Isn't Club Popular the one where loads of "normal" people go along as well?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Or the live version of "Framed" where he ends up as Hitler (xpost).

I like the TOTP2 idea, I must admit.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't Club Popular the one where loads of "normal" people go along as well?

you're thinking of Trig Brother

;_; (blueski), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Can we have "Masses Against The Classes" at the next Club Popular?
-- Marcello Carlin (marcellocarli...), October 11th, 2006 9:06 AM. (nostudium) (later) (link) (admin) (userip)

BE VERY AFRAID!!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

given that our current "advertising" for the event goes no further than mentioning it on the various bits of the interweb on which we congregate i very much doubt there will be many "normals"...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 13 October 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

Are you calling Jon Snow a freak?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 13 October 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

"coming up in part 2 of tonight's programme...details of where you can see me throwing it down to Lieutenant Pigeon, White Town and Dexy's"

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

quite a few randoms turned up for the potimism thing at polar bear.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 13 October 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

Random Scouse gits?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

much less chance of randomness in the tubeless Clerkenwell wilderness tho

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

indeed. you need to stand outside the pub wearing a poptimism arrow.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

I thought it was in Time Out or the Guardian Guide or something.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

tubeless as in pub on top of a tube line.

Ed (dali), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

Cut a hatch through the floor, and haul people up at speed. It'll be like James Bond or something.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

clearly the poptimism overlords have been smoking some of the fine crack available on the walk to the nearby Kins Cross St Pancras Tube station

Ed (dali), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

it's 5 mins from angel too

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

You can buy crack on the way to Poptimism?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, even I've been offered crack on the walk back to the Thameslink.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

(OK, we were singing "BEATZ AND LOLLEEZ ARE THE BEST!!!" at the top of our lungs at the time.)

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

and farringdon (10 from chancery lane) (every fuggin tube line apart from district, bakerloo, jubilee and northern line charing cross branch passes through that area)

Ed (dali), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

i love how 'smoking crack' is a more likely explanation than merely underestimating the walking distance to Kings Cross station. i've walked to the last two from Angel and it's been nearer 10 than 5 mins - was quite surprised tho as expected it to take longer than that for some reason.

the point is, the area is not as busy as Chinatown, so prospect of random people wondering in greatly reduced.

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, even I've been offered crack on the walk back to the Thameslink

I must change my route next time

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know it was near Angel, my geography's up the Swanee

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

Excellent transport links notwithstanding, the room is hardly the most prepossessing of venues. I think actually has negative ambience.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

I like the room a lot. Surprised more people haven't drunkenly fallen down those stairs at the end of the night tho.

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

I rather like it too, upstairs and downstairs its a nice place.

Ed (dali), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm maybe if I drink more next time its hidden qualities will come to light.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

u gotta love that electric fire

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

At least they got rid of the wobbly soft tables which you couldn't put your pint on without it toppling over!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

The large round table covered in black cloth awkwardly placed in the middle of the floor... it's gotta go.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

yeh i think it's a great room too. better even than the polar bear, and not just bc it is closer to my hoose (haha you wouldn't know it from journeyhometime - i checked how i got home after the last one using the oyster usage thingy and i got FOUR n38s: one at 1.51, one at 2.51, one at 3.22 and one at 5.19. the only thing i remember is being at piccadilly circus around 5am. i think i spent all night asleep in circles on the n38...)

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

Those felt-topped tables are left over from the poker club that used to meet upstairs! OOOoooh poker.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

I thought they had a Claes Oldenburg thing goin' on

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

Seems fine to me.

In any case I'm happy to announce that the Shadowy Poptimism Cabal have very kindly offered me a guest slot on the next Club Popular so you'll all have to come really... :-)

I am unlikely to give Ferry Aid a spin but "Masses Against The Classes"...well, we shall see...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

No DJ Pied Piper, no credibility.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

10mins from Angel tops, probably not much further from Farringdon either and bang on the 38 bus route. Are you North Londoners really that allergic to walking?

The problem with the room is a) too much seating and b) a big pub downstairs, so it can look very empty early on, and it's not exactly good for encouraging dancing. Luckily beer is better for encouraging dancing, and by the end it was fine, but it does seem to kill the voibe somewhat early on. Maybe we should have some sort of fascistic moratorium on people sitting downstairs.

Better than the Chapel Bar, not as good as the Poley Bear is my considered opinion.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Also, if you're dancing early on and feeling a bit self-conscious, the layout of the seating means everyone is looking directly at you, which doesn't help. Sure something could be done about that though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Blindfold everyone on entering the club?

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

I might let Cis go on DJ Pied Piper detail.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

the seating thing was a bit random last time i agree, i blame PEOPLE HAVING WEDDING DOS up there for the massive increase in chairs ;)

i think the discussion was about passing trade in comparison to the poley bear, which we will clearly get less of, not that there was ever an awful lot. people you didn't recognise were often tom or my cow-orkers, or lj friends of friends (this certianly applies to all the goths you didn't know ;))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

Booze is better at the new joint - QED it is better.

Ed (dali), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

Its selection of lager is rubbidge but that has had the added bonus of keeping me on the ale, and therefore considerably less ruin-prone.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

I like it. It is a bit ramshackle and shabby just like we are.

I do agree that someone is going to break their neck on those stairs. Probably fleeing from a My Chemical Romance track.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

Well, hopefully that won't still be number one by then (fingers crossed).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

my chemical brothers romance

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

i really like the union tavern although their glasses of wine are so big that they make me very ruin-prone.

the seating is good. i would argue that the thing which discourages dancing is LAMENESS not the seats.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

DON'T YOU DARE STEVEM

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

Listen Lex, we're not all like you, we don't all want to dance to Lily Allen

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 13 October 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

i like to think of what we did as performance art not dancing

YOU WILL LEARN TO LOVE IT

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 13 October 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

SOME OF US ALREADY DO

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 October 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

Oh good god, please don't give Carsmile the chance to kill ANOTHER dancefloor.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 October 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

it's the same dancefloor and this time i shall wait until cis (and dom?) are there to dance to it ;P

Arse, I also got the date wrong and with grinding predictability have managed to double-book myself for Poptimism for the nth time. This doesn't necessarily mean I won't attend however.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

The forlorn Club Popular DJ surveys his audience:

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

bah! the point of the thread revival was for you all to jump in and say "hurray, it is poptimism" not "oops, double booked"...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

Hurray it is poptimism! Please play Ashes to Ashes! Although on 2nd thoughts it's not a dance floor filler. How about Jack Your Body even though it Shouldn't have got to number one.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Don't know how many slots I'm getting, but I'm assuming it will be just the one, in which case my request inbox is full!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

That presupposes the existence of a crowd... :-(

IT'S TONIGHT.

No giveaway CDs though (but the fun is free).

I have brought the Wheel Of Pop.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 November 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

I have not yet worked out what I'm doing tonight but I'll be at Poptimism for some if not all of it, probably getting there about 9ish.

If someone could play Baby Come Back by Pato Banton it may influence my decision.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 10 November 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

I will miss this again as I'm away. Bollocks.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 10 November 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yes with me colour TV.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 November 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

Lex, we have the same elsewheres but I have to go home first I'm afraid. Also I want to be at Poptimism for a bit once the dancing has got going.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 10 November 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

the dancing can get going earlier, this is in our hands.

Discovered BETTING on the boxing! Ideally tramp fights. Hold on, according to Veronica Mars that is for the upper classes though.

Anyway, I am looking forward to Popular, tonight! I have been learning the dance from the Persil advert called 'do the funky penguin'. It will be even better than the horse move dance I tried to do at Tim's party. I shouldn't attempt to dance more than the standard indie shuffle, really.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 10 November 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

I have been learning the dance from the Persil advert called 'do the funky penguin'.

if this involves crouching, pulling your top over a legs and then waddling until you fall over then i heartily approve

especially if Pato Banton is playing at the time.

2 american 4 u (blueski), Friday, 10 November 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

actually it would go well with 'Uptown Top Ranking'

2 american 4 u (blueski), Friday, 10 November 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

Do The Funky Penguin is by Rufus Thomas, but it doesn't look like a number one. However perhaps one could (polar) bear this in mind for the next P-mism?

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 10 November 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

if this involves crouching, pulling your top over a legs and then waddling until you fall over then i heartily approve

why is it so very very easy for me to imagine our starry doing exactly this?

Really looking forward to my Club Poptimism DJ debut (plug plug!) tonight...will try and get to Clerkenwell to agree set times etc. for six-ish (I have to travel from the world-famous Chelsea & Westminster Hospital so more likely to be 6:15-ish, but I'll see youse all then)...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 10 November 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

MC if you want to play Bucks Fizz I suggest you bring your own - I am pretty sure the version on the Official Club Popular CDs is still the bum one.

A very minor point this but it has been weighing on my CONSCIENCE.

As it's my first DJ stint here I thought it best to reserve the "Scottish number ones" idea for a later date...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 10 November 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

"One Day At A Time" startlingly is eligible, sweet Jesus...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 10 November 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

do it!

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 10 November 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

following today's discussion in Another Place i am now ITCHING to play Paranoid Android, pls hide the cd if i am DJing and ppl have already started dancing...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Surely it never got to #1?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

On the other hand, you could play This Generation's Paranoid Android instead.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think pandroid got past number two...

ampersand, hearts, semicolon (cis), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Has Stiltskin been played yet?

I want to be there as I said I would be to see Marcello ridin' the wheels of steel. It is looking like late-ish doors though as typically I am supposed to be in 3 places at once. I will really really try to make it and drag along some other folks.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Well most guest DJs get a late set (pleasing the crowd) and an early set (pleasing themselves) so fingers crossed you will see at least some MC MC action.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

the question is will the guiness book of hit singles be on hand to settle any disputes

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Well most guest DJs get a late set (pleasing the crowd) and an early set (pleasing themselves)

Whereas Marcello will be pioneering a new kind of set (pleasing no-one) - only joking!!!!!!

Dadaismus (Takin' Funk to Heaven in '77) (Dada), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

"will the guiness book of hit singles be on hand to settle any disputes"

there is a handy list of number1s in date and artist order

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

I have teh ill, and probably won't be along, sorry.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

More fun than the last one, I think. We had fun, at least. The one black mark was when my Mick Jagger dance got 'out of hand' and I spun out of control, knocking the pint glass out of my friend's hand, glass breaking everywhere. Shit.

The Jagger was fucking amazing though.

g00blar (gooblar), Saturday, 11 November 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks everyone for coming! Started very quiet but by the end it was pretty excellent. Special thanks to Marcello and Cis for fantastic sets!

HOOTS MON!

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 11 November 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

The bits I was there for I enjoyed greatly - sorry I had to run off.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 11 November 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Cons of Friday:

1. Lena not there with me :-(
2. None of "my lot" (i.e. Mark S, T&G, Dr C) turned up yah boo hiss.
3. My unfortunate tendency towards "Barry-style dancing" [(c) Starry Sarah].
4. Forgetting to play "See My Baby Jive" vis-a-vis general "baby" theme.

Pros:
1. First time on the CP decks - absolute magic!
2. Excellent reaction from the floor to my determinedly non-obvious trawl through the number one archives.
3. Surprised at how well "Glad All Over" came across on the big speakers - production obv. way ahead of its time.
4. Superb set from Cis - from Sandie Shaw to Oxide & Neutrino and back again.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

5. Also nice to meet Darren StEtienne and Brian From Canada for the first time.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

I'm very sorry for the no-show, M. My evening descended into chaos due to unplanned 'fetching daughter from her friend's house' duties early on. Then once I got into town various delays and problems all mounted up. The simple excuse is that I'm a crap human being. I'm pleased it was a good night though. Again, sorry.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

bound b-b-bound-bound 4 da reload

will everyone stooopppp gggeetttttiiinnnngggg shhhooootttttt???

also, TORI! :D

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

That wasn't Bryan from Canada, was it?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

yes it was good to meet darren. really surreal & unexpected to end up discussing naomi cavaday and melanie south at poptimism! in a good way obviously

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 13 November 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Marcello, would you put your setlist up? Even though it'll just make me even more annoyed with myself for missing the train that would have got me there in time.

'baby come back' is such a stone cold classic. I particularly loved Tom's quick rock'n'roll revival bit towards the very end; also the 'put your hands up for detroit' => 'flat beat' moment was inspired.

ampersand, hearts, semicolon (cis), Monday, 13 November 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Setlist 1:
Tornados - Telstar
Chemical Brothers - Setting Son
Dave & Ansil Collins - Double Barrel
Gilbert O'Sullivan - Get Down
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno
Sugababes - Round, Round
Frank Ifield - Lovesick Blues
Manic Street Preachers - Masses Against The Classes
Monkees - I'm A Believer
M/A/R/R/S - Anitina (The First Time I See She Dance)
3 Of A Kind - Babycakes
Dave Clark Five - Glad All Over
Mel & Kim - Respectable
Yazz & the Plastic Population - The Only Way Is Up
Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus

Setlist 1a (two further tracks much later on):
Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen
Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground

Immense apologies to L. for not managing to fit in "Computer Love."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 13 November 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, M/A/R/R/S has a second number one? How did I miss that, considering how important PUTV was to me? Or was Anitina a hit first?

Anyway, that sounds top, I'd be sorry I missed it even if my alternative wasn't being home ill.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 November 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

"PUTV" and "Anitina" were (incredibly, in retrospect) a double A-side. I'm not sure it worked too well on the dancefloor, but the Robster definitely approved of it...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 13 November 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Cool. I imagine if I go looking that there's a thread on "ten least known number #1s", using that trick.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

...yep, definitely wishing I hadn't missed that first set. (manics song clearly nice point at which to run away screaming get a pint)

ampersand, hearts, semicolon (cis), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

My brief stint sitting downstairs coincided exactly with Masses Against The Classes! Hooray!

Otherwise, top set MC.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

Also, what was that very short song that went 'I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my FUCK OFF!'?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

To quote one of the many number ones unfairly omitted on Friday: "It Wasn't Me."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

when is the next poptimism? doesn't say anywhere on FT

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 13 November 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

IIRC it's 8 December.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 13 November 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

That is correct.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 November 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Who the guest DJs for the next one?

dommy p is alright WHICH IS A LOT MORE THAN I CAN SAY ABOUT A LOT OF PEOPLE (Dom, Monday, 13 November 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's flyboy and mrs carsmile.

also alang, it says on the poptimism page, but it's not exactly standing out at the moment. i'll sort it later.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 13 November 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Really enjoyed it and nice to meet so many of you guys at last. Big shout out to Marcello and the Lex.

darren (darren), Monday, 13 November 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

(sorry marcello -- i wz in shropshire w.my dad and as a result forgot to remind T *or* G)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

btw, one omission from the above setlist - in between the Monkees and M/A/R/R/S I played "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

And it looks like the New Years Eve Poptimism (aka Floptimism) is on!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

My birthday's the 2nd January I'M JUST SAYING.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)
