We were playing a show in the North American Mammals Hall at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles; the backdrop is the painted scene behind a big herd of stuffed bison who are also right behind us; we had stuff musk oxes to our right and stuffed sea lions to our left. Give or take how we sounded, but I felt that that this show was super cool because we got to improvise with Marshall Allen from Sun Ra Arkestra. He was an amazing human being and a great player.

Why hadn't I made you a Friend? Well, I have now. Yes, it's the 50mm f/1.8 II - dirt cheap through Amazon from some French third-party marketplace vendor (who sent me dodgy emails which went straight into my Spam folder). Mind you, it feels cheap, sounds cheap (loudest AF you've ever heard) but seems to take nice pics. Six stops faster than the kit lens and nine or ten faster at this focal length. I covet yr f/1.4 though.

Yes, but they're not cheap. However, you can do "fake" macro with add-on tubes, reverse adaptors, etc - there's a Flickr group for precisely that (search for "Poor man's macro").

So then I had to communicate through back channels that I was totally unaware of her mother's death and was just a blithering idiot, not the kind of jerk who'd heard about it and decided to casually make a dead-mother joke in the middle of dinner. The look on her face as she stared at me and tried to process whether I actually meant anything that horrible has helped me say about 90% less truly idiotic things over the past decade.

One of the people in the other class we shared space with asked me what I was dressed up for and I said, "My mother died." I said tis right in front of the other teacher.

he was at basketball practice and got sick, threw up. They sent him home. He came back to school the next day, a friday I think. By the end of the day he wasn't feeling well. That night he thew up again, they brought him to the emergency room, did some tests, checked him into the hospital and I think by sunday he had passed away. He'd shown no signs of being sick before that. Incredibly sad.

We call this rapid developing form of cancer, "flying cancer" here.

A client of mine has recently *by accident* discovered she had leukemia. They were doing a random blood test and found she had leukemia. Most people would have felt it - painful bones - but as she had *big bones* she hadn't noticed anything yet. She's doing pretty well, but I think she only has a chance of survival when the bone marrow operation is successful. :-( I talked quite a bit with her but felt so extremely sorry for her. But what could I do? You want to hug her but you can't since you're in a shop.
