OK - think it's sorted now. Might be a few more things we need to do over the course of the night.
For now, here's a list of new stuff. Sorry about the funny formatting.

Added rudimentary support for bookmarks. You can bookmark a particular message and the bookmarks page keeps a list of these. Clicking on the bookmark will display only the messages from the bookmark onwards.
I need to add in support for removing bookmarks later.

Think I've figured out how to get MySQL to index text with words of 3 letters. Should help the search, if it works OK.
Not installed yet as I'll need to restart MySQL. This will happen on the sandbox site as well as the main site at the same time, when I install the new software on the main site.

Bookmarks now tell you whether there's been activity on the thread since you bookmarked it (assuming you bookmark it at the end!). It's not 100% accurate, in that if something falls out the cache, it won't tell you (too costly to read the database all the time for potentially thousands of users), but it should work reasonably well; hence, it notifies you if a thread has been 'updated recently'.

No, it's just been restarting a lot, which will force a relogin

Don't think so... In fact, I think I upped it. Were you on the sandbox, that can mess with yo' cookies.
Incidentally, the stats page won't work correctly until the job runs at 0030 GMT to populate it.

Are there improvements to searching in the works and/or will we ever get links to the database by month/year as in the old days?
― milo z, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:13 (nineteen years ago)
Searching is improved. You can see by month here, too: http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/Pages/viewthreadsbymonth.jsp
― stet, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:15 (nineteen years ago)
Alan: what does it say when you try to make new ones? (They're kept in cookies, so you can delete yr cookies to start afresh)
― stet, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:16 (nineteen years ago)
i get the 'please confirm', click the button and that takes me back to the list of boards. click on bookmarks link (my prefs set not to show in page) and i get the "You currently have no bookmarks set" page
― Alan, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:18 (nineteen years ago)
Alan, can you have a look in your browser's cookies; it should set a cookie called 'bookmarks' under www.ilxor.com.
― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:19 (nineteen years ago)
could it be a safari cookies issue?
― Alan, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:19 (nineteen years ago)
You're right, it is Safari. Was working for me in Firefox, not Safari.
― stet, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:20 (nineteen years ago)
:-) x post.
i have a named 'bookmarks' cookie path /ILX and another /ILX/. that'll be doing it.
― Alan, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:21 (nineteen years ago)
Great - losing the 8080 means I CAN'T get here via work (which is probably a blessing).
― David R., Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:21 (nineteen years ago)
the first /ILX is empty, but the /ILX/ has stuff in it...
i manually delete the first, and bingo.
― Alan, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:22 (nineteen years ago)
Alan,
Yeah, been here before tonight already! I'll set the path to /ILX explicitly.
― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:22 (nineteen years ago)
and i can go round the cycle again, add, delete, and i end up with a blank cookie on /ILX, but bookmarks data is in /ILX/
hope this is all helping!
― Alan, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:24 (nineteen years ago)
It's cool - I've fixed it.
I'll deploy it shortly.
― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:26 (nineteen years ago)
groovy. er must catch some kip now. well done and all that!
― Alan, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:26 (nineteen years ago)
Great - losing the 8080 means I CAN'T get here via work (which is probably a blessing). I want to get all the 8080 URLs out of google, cos they're making the search results diverge, so it's set to force them back to here.
You might be able to get into here at http://sandbox.thehold.net/ILX/ which is pointing to real ILX for the time being.
― stet, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:27 (nineteen years ago)
Should be it now, Alan.
You'll need to scrub the two cookies that were sitting there, though.

― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 10:26 (nineteen years ago)
Yeah, character sets are getting screwed up. I don't quite follow it. It should be fine, as in the database is storing UTF-8 and that's what ILX holds in memory too, but for some reason, when it's getting re-read by the database it's not coming back as expected (Caek's broke after I stop/started ILX).
I need to look into this. For now, this isn't going to work correctly.
― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 10:44 (nineteen years ago)
its working now.

― g®▲Ðұ, Saturday, 19 May 2007 10:51 (nineteen years ago)
No, even if it looks as though it is, data's not being written to the database correctly, so when the cache gets flushed, it'll not be right. I'm looking into it.
― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 10:59 (nineteen years ago)
OK, I think I have it figured. I'll just try it out on the sandbox.

― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 11:12 (nineteen years ago)
Yup, that's looking OK now.
― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 11:19 (nineteen years ago)
Am I right in saying that the database now forgets where you were in the thread when you get logged out? That's happened to me twice this morning, that on logging back in I had to find where I was.
― aldo, Saturday, 19 May 2007 11:26 (nineteen years ago)
Me too.
― onimo, Saturday, 19 May 2007 11:27 (nineteen years ago)
Aldo, no, it's just me been trying to fix stuff, been stopping and starting ILX lots... Sorry :)
― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 11:27 (nineteen years ago)
i think it would be good if 'show all recent threads' (for like the whole last week) came back. ilm particularly, cos it's only got a one day attention span as is and after that it's up to the dedicated to search it out again.
also wd be cool if "load all messages" took you back to where u were before after, but that's no biggie really.
― r|t|c, Saturday, 19 May 2007 11:56 (nineteen years ago)
Do you mean questions? Or just that the new answers page should have more on it?
― Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 11:58 (nineteen years ago)
no, on new answers. (never look at questions for some reason.)
doesnt have to have more on it immediately for the sake of load times, but say a link at the bottom to show older threads for the last week or so. i'm sure that's what it used to be like?
― r|t|c, Saturday, 19 May 2007 12:02 (nineteen years ago)
Yeah, it was good, it was just a longer new answers page that went back further, which you could load up if you really wanted to.
Keith you are awesome for doing all this work. This stuff is so far beyond what ILX has ever had.
― Tracer Hand, Saturday, 19 May 2007 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

Is this also the thread to make requests? Because if there's any way to hide the bracketed text on the New Answers pages, it would be appreciated. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't care who started a thread and when it was last updated. And polls: could there be a user-preference to not display those threads? Also, has a way to remain logged in until logging out been worked out?
But yes, I do appreciate the work you guys have done thus far, and will gladly pay up next time you have to pass the collection plate around.
― naus, Sunday, 20 May 2007 11:41 (nineteen years ago)
I've done the preference options you mention... On the sandbox: http://www.ilxor.com:8090/ILX/
Next time we upgrade you'll get them. Staying logged in forever is more tricky, but it should keep you logged in for a longer period of time than a couple of days ago, now.

OK, I think I've sorted the character set thing out. I think it looks OK, though I'll need to sort your display names once I make the change, to put them back to what they were.
You might want to register at the sandbox and try it out, if you're interested.

Weird, that works when you type it in a message, but comes up as a question mark in your screen name for me. Maybe I need more "language packs."
― kenan, Monday, 21 May 2007 23:59 (nineteen years ago)
Jhoshea - it's because I haven't deployed it yet. I'll not do it when ILX is busy, which usually means the weekend. It won't work until then.
― Keith, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 07:54 (nineteen years ago)
oh i guess i couldve figured that out by reading the thread
― jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:20 (nineteen years ago)
Sorry about the brief interruption there... Some fixes up, including options to not show polls and hide the new answers information, also I think the final fixes for the character problems described above.
― Keith, Friday, 25 May 2007 21:07 (nineteen years ago)
what happened to my bookmarks? I had around 5 bookmarks and then I took my laptop to the library today and when I got home and logged in again, all my bookmarks were gone. :(
re-adding them works fine, i just wanted to know what happened the first time around.
― Roz, Sunday, 27 May 2007 15:44 (nineteen years ago)
Did you delete your cookies? That would wipe them.
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)
nope i didn't.
― Roz, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)
I don't know then. I am actually kind of regretting implementing it the way that I did (i.e. with cookies), so I might change it around at some point, which would mean that people would be able to keep their bookmarks between work/home.
― Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 18:58 (nineteen years ago)
That's ok, thanks anyway, Keith. It seems to be working fine now but I'll let you know if they disappear again.
― Roz, Sunday, 27 May 2007 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 27 May 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)
Why must you even force yourself to slum with us on this messageboard? You're such a martyr.
― kv_nol, Monday, 28 May 2007 08:05 (nineteen years ago)
Does it really not occur to people that the complainants are people who like the board and the people on it but would prefer things kind of back the way they were (except with less poxy fulage). And, before you jump on me, I know that's not going to actually happen for any number of reasons, but that doesn't mean people don't have the right to go "um, why are you introducing features people didn't ask for and don't work anyway?" especially when you can't, e.g., make a longer new answers page which is something people have been grumbling about for ages.
― ailsa, Monday, 28 May 2007 08:20 (nineteen years ago)
Ailsa, it's JW. His mission is to complain until challenged. He then either calls you an aspie or starts creepily crushing on you. It is his thing.
Also his constant whining is completely fucking ridiculous at this point seeing as he does nothing to help because, as far as I can see, he lacks the ability.
― kv_nol, Monday, 28 May 2007 08:25 (nineteen years ago)
Oh, right, so *no-one* gets to complain or dislike this because being a user with a problem doesn't matter unless you can actually sort it yourself? Come off it. I am very well aware that Jon has a tendency to be a dick, but he also makes some valid points from time to time.
(also, yeah, I'm not complaining because (1) it doesn't matter that much to me any more and (2) it'd just be setting myself up as a person who complains a lot, and who needs that shit when I've got Jon to do it for me?)
― ailsa, Monday, 28 May 2007 08:51 (nineteen years ago)
Ailsa, you missed my point. Everyone has a right to complain and we all do from time to time. Jon, OTOH brags that he can do something better, well then he should do it. He wants to claim ownership of Noize and all it's members, let him take that board and head off. The constant whining and sniping is irritating and counterproductive as in any valid points he makes are drowned out by his constant bitching!
― kv_nol, Monday, 28 May 2007 09:06 (nineteen years ago)
but WHY should he? This whole thing started to stop Jon hacking in and fucking shit up. stet and Keith and Pashmina and TOMBOT and some others that I don't know about are the ones who decided they wanted to take the reins and sort this out. Who's to say Jon wouldn't fuck shit up from the inside given half a chance? (disclaimer: I know fuck all about how this stuff works)
― ailsa, Monday, 28 May 2007 09:15 (nineteen years ago)
Ailsa, there are other threads discussing the whole post-melt down phenomenon. At this point, this thread will all just devolve into another discussion about JW, a subject that really doesn't merit the attention given.
― kv_nol, Monday, 28 May 2007 09:47 (nineteen years ago)
Yeah, I know. But, y'know, you started it :-)
I'm more amused at Onimo's drunken gibbering upthread anyway.
― ailsa, Monday, 28 May 2007 10:06 (nineteen years ago)
kv nol, I don't even know who you are so I can't even call you an aspie. I assume you're a hateful YURO-PEEN.
He wants to claim ownership of Noize and all it's members, let him take that board and head off.
I've asked for the archives several times and been ignored. I've asked if I reimplemented an HTML parser it would be ignored.
(disclaimer: I know fuck all about how this stuff works)
Maybe more people should take this disclaimer. Fuck you, stuck up bitch.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 06:21 (nineteen years ago)
And as for the "bookmarks feature" implementing them using cookies is about the worst idea I've ever heard in my life. It is actively worse than using browser bookmarks.

I'm guessing it was directed at me, since it was under my quote. Cheers Jon. I do have some sympathy for your points, if not for the way you're making them. But you're not making it terribly easy for people to pay attention to you by screaming insults at people who *are* on your side (sort of, not that it's about taking sides, but I certainly don't buy into kv's theory that you have no right to complain if you can't fix it yourself)
― ailsa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

The questions pages aren't doing so well with the headings to split up days! It's designed for new answers, but being re-used across all these pages (unintentionally). I'll need to sort that out.
― Keith, Monday, 4 June 2007 01:15 (nineteen years ago)
How possible/easy would it be to add "Search for threads started by (Username)" to the search function? There's one that I can't find at all, but I know who created it.
― Rock Hardy, Monday, 4 June 2007 01:16 (nineteen years ago)
You can do that now... I keep forgetting to document it... It does search usernames too, not just thread titles. Stick the user name in quotes - like "Rock Hardy".

It's really worth changing to the simple.css stylesheet, btw. Click Preferences in the top bar, then "I want to change how ILX looks".

Could do with some horizontal rule sin the threads and the spacing in new answers compressed a little.

I have changed mine. It is hard to choose which one is best.
― PJ Miller, Monday, 4 June 2007 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

It's really worth changing to the simple.css stylesheet, btw.
?! It looks really ugly to me!
― toby, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:26 (nineteen years ago)
It will get longer... It just needs for people to add more new answers to more threads! It's the same length as all the others, but it populates itself as it goes (from having nothing in it when I started the server).
― Keith, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:27 (nineteen years ago)
Can you do one with Goodies writing, please Keith?
And another one with Space 1999 writing?

― Edward III, Monday, 4 June 2007 15:11 (nineteen years ago)
ok what would be the best is if you could create you own multi board! like ile + noise + ire + ilnfl
then you dont have to read ilm see
― jhøshea, Monday, 4 June 2007 15:35 (nineteen years ago)
that would just be unsafe, I mean what if I accidentally think I'm posting to an ILE thread when I'm actually posting to an IRE thread, the consequences could be astronomically disastrous

Sorry if someone has already mentioned this, but what's happened to the Recent Questions page? I know a lot of people don't use it, and I've accepted it won't be moved back as the default, but it's gone really hideously ugly and confusing now. Can it not just be kept as was?
― emil.y, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)
It's just a bug. I have fixed it. I will deploy it some time when it's quiet.

Thanks Keith, hope I didn't sound snarky, as you guys have done aces with the Nu-ILx overall.
― emil.y, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:59 (nineteen years ago)
It's OK... I just didn't notice because there's not enough stuff on the test site. The confusing mess that it is, is because the threads are ordered by creation date, and the code that sticks dates in between them is keyed on the time they were last updated... I'll probably promote it some time this evening.
― Keith, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

Write your own then send it to keef for upload. Or copy the current ILX one from your Internet cache and customise it then send it to keef for upload. Or get a Firefox plug in that allows you to use custom style sheets without sending them to keef.

I like the new stylesheets. I like seeing who started a thread. I'm really enjoying seeing every new answer all at once instead of board-by-board. I was very skeptical before the adjustments were made, but now I'm seeing some definite improvement.
However,

re: blank screen after posting thing: the computer that does this for me also seems to ignore the image size limiting thing...? is there a way to turn that off? meaning, if i like big images, can i still have them?
― gr8080, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 19:11 (nineteen years ago)
I don't understand that - you're saying your browser ignores image size limits, but you want to know if you can have big images... Are you not saying that this is what your browser does?
As for browser-specific things, I'm afraid there's precious little I can do to change how browsers behave... Here's the highly handy Microsoft response to the IE6 blank-screen-after-posting stuff:
Phoebe_MS (Expert): Q: On a site I manage, pages with form submissions recently have been returning "blank pages" after hitting submit using IE 6. Only seems to happen during a form submission, not a link to a URL... A: Have you changed any of your default settings in Toos | Internet Options...?
Phoebe_MS (Expert): Q: oops sorry - What causes these blank pages and is there a work-around either client side or server side? The common link seems to be these forms use J(ava)script submit, and since it is a "packaged product" can't really change the code... A: Have you switched to HTTPS form submission recently?
― Keith, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 19:25 (nineteen years ago)
I like how the 'answer' in both instances, is another question. The second 'answer' seems to bear little relation to the question.
― Keith, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)
Hey, since the threads keep getting locked/deleted on Mod Request, can we just get a straight answer re:the lack of admin log? If it's impossible due to coding or something, then fine. It would just be nice to know.
― John Justen, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 19:36 (nineteen years ago)
And srsly, this isn't a veiled attack or lack of admin trust or anything.
― John Justen, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 19:37 (nineteen years ago)
sorry for not being clear.
I access ILX from two computers.
Computer A, used 98% of the time: limited img size, no blank screen after posting.
Computer B, used 2% of the time: the opposite.
I was using computer B for a few hours yesterday and noticed this.
also, John OTM. Admin Log was a much-appreciated feature in the past, similar to other features that were absent upon ILX 2.0's unveiling but have since been brought back. Just curious.

add to that: viewing this thread, flags small on computer A, normal on computer B.

Keith, has there been tinkering since Sunday afternoon? I can still get in here at work, but at home both ILX and the Sandbox are timing out and can't connect.
Cache and cookies have been flushed, tried in both IE and Firefox.
― aldo, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 08:03 (nineteen years ago)
Aldo, no... Nothing since Friday morning, and that was a tiny change. It's more likely to be something up with your ISP, I suspect.
― Keith, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 10:04 (nineteen years ago)
I did have issues with them once before connecting to ILX (and only ILX) right enough, even though I could tracert the server. Hmm.
― aldo, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 10:26 (nineteen years ago)
Hi dere I have a wee point re bookmarks. It's a handy feature and I use it for my regular/long/favourite threads but isn't the point of them to jump straight into a certain point and avoid loading the entire thread? Hitting the "confirm bookmark" button takes me back into the top of the bookmarked thread and loads the entire thing, which kind of defeats the purpose - not to mention taking ages on picture threads.
Bookmarking a thread means I'm finished reading that thread for the time being and will return to it later, so bookmarking should spit me out to New Answers.
Also, I see no need for a "confirm bookmark" step. If I accidentally click a link and bookmark a thread I don't want I can always delete it afterwards.
― onimo, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 12:52 (nineteen years ago)
IBM, for example, notches a score of 346,742 bops with a four-socket, eight-core server running 16 software threads. That beat out the score of 217,334 bops set by a similarly configured Xeon-based ProLiant system from HP and a score of 158,174 set by an Itanium-based HP server.

― TOMBOT, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 13:15 (nineteen years ago)
IBM, however, did not do so well against lower-end x86-based systems. In fact, it still trails one-socket and two-socket Xeon-based systems from Dell even with the 4.7GHz heft.
― stet, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 13:17 (nineteen years ago)
Oh I don't actually care I just like sentences where six-digit numbers are followed by the word "bops", they make me chuckle

Cannot post from lynx/links? ;_; Any other textmode nerds? Was hoping not to ILX up my local work browser.
Links says "7648596109056869822: Failed to insert message." (hope that number doesn't contain anything sensitive) and lynx says "Alert!: HTTP/1.1 408 The time allowed for the login process has been exceeded." instantly, so it hasn't been allowing any time.
Yeah, yeah, get one 21st century browser, but I don't think I'm the only ilxor to use them, and they're not really that counter to the ILX Experience philosophy.
(I think they are up-to-datish versions but not my box so I'm not about to upgrade. Then again maybe I am just unlucky right now since I couldn't login from Opera at home on Mon)
― a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 14 June 2007 09:04 (nineteen years ago)
...Sorry, I sounded a bit pissier than I intended, so, uh, thanks for all yr hard work. But does links and/or lynx access not work for anyone else, or is my setup just broken? If it could be fixed then I could slack a little less blatantly and that would be great.

so i feel it's time now that we be allowed to embed videos. what with all these youtubesque flash video sites with their made to embed video, the situation is so much more better than the bad old days of choicelessly starting quicktime/wmv movies.
also maybe it would be good when you hide admin view then images load - cause it's kind lame to not see images.
thx

<i>Yeah, yeah, get one 21st century browser, but I don't think I'm the only ilxor to use them, and they're not really that counter to the ILX Experience philosophy.</i> There are three people use lynx, according to the logs. I'm one, you're another. I wonder who the third is?
It works OK for me, incidentally.
― stet, Friday, 29 June 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
Maybe this has been mentioned, but the only thing that's bugged me is the endless login loop you can get into on a busy thread:
1. try to post 2. enter login info 3. wait, xposts 4. re-enter login info 5. more xposts while you were doing that 6. re-enter login info REALLY FAST 7. no luck 8. give up and go log in independently
Which is really not a big deal, but weird, since there's no "ignore xposts" checkbox -- it's too bad it doesn't successfully log you in the first time you enter your info, even if the post gets suspended for xposts.

I have used Lynx to access ILX, in the past. Don't think I have since ILX2 appeared.
I have a mor serious problem at the moment: I've just upgraded my home PC from Gentoo Linux 2.6.16 to Gentoo Linux 2.6.20 - and, I can't see ILX any more, no matter what browser I use.
If I do a packet capture, I can see the packets that the ILX server is sending to me. But, they get dropped somewhere in the networking layers of the kernel, and never get passed through to applications. I've tried using browsers; I've tried typing HTTP commands at port 80; and all the packets get dropped by the kernel.
I'm going to try compiling a vanilla Linux kernel to see if the problem is in the Gentoo patchset. But something has changed in Linux in the past year or so that doesn't like the packets the ILX server sends - but seems to have no problems with any servers anywhere else I use.

Mods and admins, remind me again about changeable screen names. Is it impossible, or just difficult? It's the best feature of old-ILX that we don't have anymore. Bring it back!

I think the thing is that it eats up a lot of data
― Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 4 August 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)
er, the data involved eat up a lot of server space, that is

Can we have the "later" link back, so we can leave a thread without finishing it and still come back to where we left off?

Another request: since I usually check out ILX first thing I do when I get up (such is the responsibilities of a board mod) and before I go to work, I demand a button that makes me a nice cup of tea (black with two sugars).
― King Boy Pato, Saturday, 4 August 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)
the bookmarks are a decent enough replacement for that, surely?

doesn't it jump to the last post you loaded when you click back on the thread anyway (as long as you're already logged in)?

Revive! I'm still having this problem w the "7648596109056869822: Failed To Insert Message" bug. I'm getting this in Firefox 2 and 3 and IE. The above-suggestion about nuking cookies didn't work.
Has anyone else figured this out?
― Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
That's it checking the referrer and finding that when you post a message, that the post request doesn't come from www.ilxor.com. Are you coming in from a different URL?
― Keith, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)
Posting from another site you mean? No. Just ilxor.com. At home, this works on my Mac -- but not on my XP machine.
― Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)
Well, it would fail if the request looks as though it doesn't come from there. I dunno about all these browser plugins you can get that do funny stuff, or something that might actually remove the referer HTTP header before you post (some sort of super-paranoid security plugin, perhaps) that would cause this problem.
― Keith, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
All I have is Foxmarks and adblock -- and turning them off does nothing...
Again, I also get this problem on IE, so I wonder what's going on...
― Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)
Wonder if his ISP is rewriting refers which would be mental. Also this -- http://www.eff.org/testyourisp/switzerland
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
Wouldn't expect so if the Mac is working and it's using the same ISP.
NTI, I can't really say much more on the grounds that I've no idea what's going on, on your computer. Maybe your firewall does something perhaps? It doesn't seem browser specific, but it is only happening on Windows, so that might be a guess. Try turning the firewall off for a bit and have a go.
Other than that, I don't know. Literally, all it does, is look for an HTTP header called "referer" and throws that error if it doesn't find it, or finds it and it's set to something other than www.ilxor.com, to reduce the likelihood of submissions of forms from anywhere.
Whatever's happening on your machine is either removing, or changing what's in that header, but I've no idea why or how.

I just looked at RetailMeNot and it actually looks like it doesn't call out remotely -- it keeps a copy of the site's db locally.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 4 August 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)
lol Keith you have to reach back in your memories or click on the red bar and ctrl+f "referrer" etc
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)
Let's see if this works...
― Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)
Yay -- it was the Symantec firewall.
― Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)
Wow, so it must've been stripping out the referer. What a cheeky monkey.

While we're at it, I've noticed this bug in ILX: when I accidentally mistype the BBcode, the site is nice enough to tell me I've mistyped the code, and gives me the chance to correct it. But when I do that and try to repost what I've written, I always get an error message and the post doesn't go through, even though the BBcode is now corrected. This happens with both IE and Firefox.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:44 (seventeen years ago)
The error message is like this:
HTTP Status 403 - Access to the requested resource has been denied
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
message Access to the requested resource has been denied
description Access to the specified resource (Access to the requested resource has been denied) has been forbidden.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)
yeah i get that a lot as wel

― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)
This is a bug. It may be fixed some time.
Nice to meet you on Sunday, Tracer. Sorry I didn't get more of a chance to chat. I stupidly thought that it would get quieter, later! Some other time.
― Keith, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)
Only recently noticed the tidy little AJAX. It's so subtle! Awesome!
― fields of salmon, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I looked around for you but it was kinda.. crazy.
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, it was a great laugh. Saw loads of people I haven't seen for ages.
Fields of salmon... Waht? There is no AJAX... This site is guaranteed pure Windows 3.1 shit.
― Keith, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)
Enh? But now when you post a comment it doesn't redraw the entire page! How does that work.
― fields of salmon, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 12:15 (seventeen years ago)
It does... It just does it really quickly!
― Keith, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)
Waht? There is no AJAX... This site is guaranteed pure Windows 3.1 shit. Ahem "convert simple HTML to BBcode" cough cough we up to date with all modern techniques and that
― stet, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)
That's more like SJA, but yes, it is certainly Javascript.
― Keith, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)
Though Javascript's really up there with Windows 3.1 shit I suppose.
Sorry if this isn't the right thread for this, but if I look at this poll thread:PIXIES Poll: The best track on Trompe le Mondewith images turned off in my ILX preferences, the first post just appears like this:
http://i36.tinypic.com/280tvua.jpg, Monday, 15 December 2008 01:55 (3 days ago) Bookmark
all on one line, so the text before the image, the poll options list and the post attribution have all disappeared. Thought I'd raise it here in case any other polls-with-images are also broken.
(Also I was logged out when I first clicked on an option to vote, and after the login page I got some kind of error message which I've now lost which basically told me there was an unspecified error and try again in a minute, but I don't know if this is related or if I did something else wrong. Might've typed my password wrong, I often type my old ILX password in by mistake still)
(PS I'm using a slightly old version of Opera on XP, if that's of any relevance, but I've viewed source and the missing stuff really is missing, not just been eaten by an unclosed tag or anything)
― britisher ringpulls (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 18 December 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)
It's the same with me: I have images turned of, and the first post is totally invisible, I see only the same thing as Spacecadet. I'm at work, so I'm using IE.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 18 December 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)
These polls both have images in the starting thread and still work for me with Show Images off, so I've no idea what the problem with the Pixies one is.
everybody has their own opinion: the jane's addiction NOTHING'S SHOCKING polljay reatard matador singles '08
Can't find anything else of the form [internal ILX link, text, image, poll] like the Pixies poll yet so maybe it's something about that combination which does it.
― britisher ringpulls (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 18 December 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)
I'd suggest starting a thread on the mod request forum or something about this.
― grimly fiendish, Thursday, 18 December 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)
Will do, thanks. Wasn't sure if it was just "please edit this, thanks" requests there but now I see there are some other code/bug-related queries too.
