American Idol for directors. First two episodes have been pretty decent, even with Brett Ratner as a judge.

milo z, Friday, 25 May 2007 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

damn that one dude's special effects are AMAZING HOT SHIT WOW.

also, film major girl from new york city: hotttttttttttttt.

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 25 May 2007 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

The first short they showed last night (homeless guy in laundromat) would have been better without the narration. But that and sfx dude were both pretty good for a movie shot in 24 hours.

milo z, Friday, 25 May 2007 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

this is probably going to crush my soul, right?
i kind of want to watch it though

rrrobyn, Sunday, 27 May 2007 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

or maybe i'll just watch the episode clips on the fox site

rrrobyn, Sunday, 27 May 2007 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

also, film major girl from new york city: hotttttttttttttt.

i guess if you like anorexic nyu cookie cutter girls. also, she is way obnoxious.

tehresa, Sunday, 27 May 2007 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

actually i prefer overweight rural women, but she'll do. why because she look interesting. also, who cares about obnoxious, i'm not searching for a soulmate. just watching a dumb show.

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 27 May 2007 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it's kinda dumb, but i only watched the clips. i do like carrie fisher.

best 24 hr shorts: 'ding' & 'sponsored by'

okay and anyone can upload their films to the website? oh man...

rrrobyn, Sunday, 27 May 2007 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

my wife is horrified @ carrie fisher's appearance but i dont care, she's a writer now not an actress

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 27 May 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

also i'm calling myself out 4 being a dick 2 tehresa, wtf me

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 27 May 2007 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

just sayin, there were plenty of more interesting women on that show alone! apparently the cast is not up on the site yet though.

tehresa, Sunday, 27 May 2007 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

did u think she was really cookie cutter? i thought she was v.pretty

that hannah looked like a poor person's ally

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 27 May 2007 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, take a walk around nyc and you will see 30000 of her.

tehresa, Sunday, 27 May 2007 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

She didn't seem all that skinny, but I thought her country-girl partner was cuter (got booted, right?)

milo z, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Tehresa, that's why I loved living in New York City!

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

yeah dumb girl was a lot cuter, i thought. though also not esp original looking. but it's her own fault for being bullied by that dude. (getting booted, not her looks)

tehresa, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

If you want to be a director, I suspect you need to know how to yell and bully when it's time to get your shot.

Sad that both of the annoying guys (in the group where they shot in a cafe, woman having her husband killed or whatever) didn't get tossed. I would like to read the big guy's list of influences for giggles (guarantee numero uno would have been Tarantino).

milo z, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that whole short was really bad. they all should have gone. it seemed like a lot of the ones that they showed clips of (but not the whole things) might have been better but i'm guessing we saw the full shorts for the groups we did because they had the best reality show drama leading up to the screening.

tehresa, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

If you want to be a director, I suspect you need to know how to yell and bully when it's time to get your shot.

no, that is AD's job

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Can anyone on here explain how that guy did the special fx?

That was pretty impressive, though I could imagine him getting pigeonholed as the "guy who makes stuff freeze while other things move". Hopefully he has some other tricks up his sleeve.

Moodles, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

did you see his audition tape? he was like 'hi i'm a filmmaker' and then a flying saucer appeared so he picked up a huge cannon and blew it up

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 27 May 2007 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

0 for 2 tonight.

They need a bitter English guy for the judges' table.

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha my wife just said the same thing!

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

everyone on this show is too ambitious and self assured for me to like them

A B C, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

wow, the taxi cab and the Smoking Aces/Ocean's 11 rip were just brutal.

18 of these in one night is way too many.

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

yeah none of these would even be youtube hitz

A B C, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

it's not the 18 in one night, it's the fact that very few people have original ideas.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

disappointed in cuet NYU girl's movie

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

I wish you could vote against people instead of for them. I've seen nothing that I'd want to vote for, but I'd totally vote against bus-pee and the two trailers.

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

omg i was just thinking that! they should replace the voting for your favorite thing with a vote off the weakest link thing. i would feel much more comfortable voting off crap than backing something i wasn't 100% on.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

and what is with judges and double standards? girls can not do pee or fart jokes, but when the dude does puke joke, it's totally hilarious?

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

This is horrific! OMG! Why can't I stop watching it?!?!?! AHHHHH!

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

omg getta room

Surely the guy knew his actor came off as challenged and just made up 'nerd' to sound better?

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

so, so bad.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

yes but the aliens were CUTE...no, you're right.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

SPECIAL EFFECTS GUY!

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

Winner!

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

impressed by the 1 shot thing.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

yeah he's awesome

SHALINI OTM

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

The judges are almost as bad as the films...Everyone wanting a snarky English guy OTM

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

if they tell this guy his fart jokes are good i will scream.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

oh, there we go. ugh. i hate these judges.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:52 (nineteen years ago)

high culture fart jokes

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

Well, on the plus side, I've never felt so confident about going into filmmaking.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like someone to throw the competition and do something Brakkhage-esque

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

wannabe getting slugged by his granny was pretty much the peak

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

I knew it'd be a trainweck when he started introducing ("So, it's the hottest day in the hood..." and, uh, Mookie's hanging out on his stoop)

Tape Store, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

oh that last fart joke one was pretty good, admit it.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

ehhh

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

you've never blamed it on the couch, tehresa? i identified with that move -- and I felt really bad for the doomed caveman. great lighting in that one.

still, there's only like seven who I think acquitted themselves well here, and only about three who I'd trust to do a whole movie

If I was Zach Lipovsky I would A) not listen to fucking Gary Marshall (whose birth name may or may not have been Marsciarelli), and B) forget the damn competition and get a MULTI-million dollar deal with whoever the fuck I wanted to, based on his work here so far. damn.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

my tv reception sucks it big time so i miss a lot on things like lighting and aesthetics, so will take your word on that. i guess at some point they will be up on the internet but that is just too much effort to put into reality tv i think.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not convinced that special FX guy can make a movie. The short tonight would have been an excellent commercial, but it doesn't tell us anything about his ability to tell a story, chain together multiple scenes or move actors through space.

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

this is very true. and aren't there tons of people in hollywood that are good at special effects?

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

A) I didn't say he could make an entire movie. I just said he could sign a deal RIGHT NOW. Are you arguing with that?

B) It was an assignment, which he fulfilled; it was funny and original (at least for this crowd) and well-done. What the hell else do you want at this point?

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

NONE of these films prove anything about ANYONE's ability to make a film.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:28 (nineteen years ago)

also true. my, you are v. defensive. milo can have opinions! we must not all agree!

i wonder if they are setting it up as the 'oh he is so good' so later they can highlight it when he fails to come through on a longer/serious/whatever assignment that special effects won't get him through (just like some of the people tonight clearly aren't particularly great at comedy). classic reality "plot development".

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I'm arguing that he's not going to get any kind of deal based on his ability to do some FX. You don't think there are two hundred ILM/Lucas/etc. designers with at least as much skill in CGI?

Almost every other short had multiple lighting setups, shots from different angles, etc..

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

True -- but he is now 'that effects guy'. And isn't it kind of impressive that he can do all that shit on his own, without a whole huge studio of people doing things for him?

Also, dearest Tehresa, I always allow Milo to have his opinions -- and you too, and everyone -- we just never happen to agree on anything. But we always keep it civil, and real.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

you just seem to react so strongly! but alas, what fun would message board discussion be without strong reactions?

the guy does know how to do effects, i definitely give him props for that, but he did seem to have a crew (they all did) for this week's project. i imagine that being 'effects guy' is great for initial attention and getting audience votes. what's your take on whether he can advance a plot without the use of effects, though?

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

And will he make it through documentary week with his dignity intact?

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

I guess we shall have to see, no? I think he's got a better shot than Kenny I Don't Need Film School God Dammit Luby or Marty I Wanna Be Spielberg Martin, those guys are Ratners-in-training and yuck.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

god i hate that kenny dude. what the hell was his short anyway?

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

I would bet money that Kenny and Marty are gone after this week. They couldn't even make movies, they made trailers!

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't mind the idea of trailer-as-comedy-short -- it worked in Grindhouse -- but he failed to make any comment about trailers OR comedy movies, and his execution was slack. As for the other guy...well, it sucked all around, and I am not inclined to give him a break because of his prickitude the week before.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:24 (nineteen years ago)

sorry "trailers OR action movies"

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:24 (nineteen years ago)

Did they say when the next ep was?

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

results tomorrow night i think? don't know if that is going to be an actual episode or just one of those annoyingly long and drawn out elimination deals.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

I think I hated each and every one of these "filmmakers".

Simon H., Tuesday, 29 May 2007 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

well then you sir are a hater. congratulations on that.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Rumor has it that William Friedkin is gonna be a guest judge soon. If he really is a as big an asshole as legend has said, he'd make a good sub for a snarky English judge.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

blinded by bosoms

milo z, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

ew two first names guy lives on

tehresa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

way to mindfuck the poor NYU student!

The three who got tossed weren't even in the worst eight or nine. Americans have no taste.

milo z, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

Who were they?!?! Not the female documentary filmmaker?!?!

Tape Store, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

Because she was kinda hot! And she was working in unfamiliar territory.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

girl with long name, italian girl and british dude out.

they were definitely not my least favorite, but i have to say i'm not shocked that people like getta room and wack alley dude stayed. americans in voting for dumb people on reality shows, shocka!

tehresa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

lucky penny overrated

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks...It sounds like she's still there.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

all it means is that people from other countries should never be in shows like this, any asshole us citizen with a regional fanbase can apparently get into the top 3

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

definitely. wack dude is from a tiny ass town in bumfuck ny. clearly everyone in the town voted for him and that's pretty much all you need because people who might care about the quality probably don't care about voting.

tehresa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

So many things are wrong with the show. How come in an hour we only got to see 3 clips, and the rest was taken up by long pauses before they revealed who went home? Honestly, I don't care enough about the contestants (yet? ever?) to wait for 5 minutes between each decision. They should've just shown all the clips.

Mordechai Shinefield, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the judges had absolutely no insight into any of the films. Princess Leah was all like, "I liked that. I didn't like that." Thanks, Princess.

Mordechai Shinefield, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

You guys make this show sound so compelling. Can I watch?

Ivan, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

Mordy: catch up, dude -- they showed ALL EIGHTEEN last night. The reason no one had anything to say is that they said it all last night -- about ALL EIGHTEEN movies.

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

(not to say they had a lot of insight last night either though)

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

I won't be watching any more results shows, that was so dull. Repeat their names, repeat their names, show clip, cut to Carrie saying nothing [...] repeat their names, fake out NYU girl because she thinks she's going home, finish.

Who is the hostess? I assume she had an entertainment-world job before, or maybe she's Scarlett Johansson's long-lost Italian twin or something.

milo z, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 03:25 (nineteen years ago)

well her birth name is Adrianna Heber, and she was on CNN Headline News or some shit

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

thanks wikipedia

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh. Weird. I saw the 2 episodes on the Fox webpage, so I assumed I was caught up. Apparently I missed an episode. I'll watch that tonight.

Here's a question: How is it that three supposed professionals in film (or at least, 3 people with supposedly good film taste) didn't realize that "Getta Rhoom" was going to win big? It may be a tasteless film, but aren't their jobs to know what the audience likes?

Mordechai Shinefield, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 06:05 (nineteen years ago)

I mean - that's the only reason I watch American Idol or Project Runway. Because I assume the judges have more insight into the performances than I do.

Mordechai Shinefield, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 06:06 (nineteen years ago)

Damn. It's still not on the FOX.

Mordechai Shinefield, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 06:33 (nineteen years ago)

apparently ratings are pretty low so they are condensing the competition/results show into one night

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

GOOD IDEA

Tape Store, Monday, 4 June 2007 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

as long as the results are like five minutes at the beginning or end - GOOD IDEA.

milo z, Monday, 4 June 2007 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

yeah no need for an hour of results!

tehresa, Monday, 4 June 2007 03:06 (nineteen years ago)

uh, michael bay is a douche! all his criticisms seem like threatened pre-teen lashings out!

tehresa, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

wow, those were all awful

milo z, Thursday, 7 June 2007 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

Marty in Douchebag shocka!

Next week should be interesting: Black Dude vs. Texas Guy vs. NYU Girl vs. F/X Whiz vs. "Ghetta Room" Mook.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

my roommate and i just sat there last night shaking our heads at this show. all. so. bad. guess what, dude? a trailer is not a 'short film'. and hey, owego: that was like a cheesy high school band's self-made 'artsy' music video. and the slut mom was not actually funny and even though her son was cute, the lead woman's acting was terrible! asl;ekrjg;adsgk

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

yeah watching this show is depressingly reminiscent of some of the stuff from my college's film dept. at a screening I went to once. I missed the first few episodes, how exactly did they pick the finalists?

I am falling in love with Adrianna Costa in all her crappy host glory.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, excellent question. i was thinking there are SO many wannabe filmmakers out there that surely they could have picked a better crop of finalists than this, right??

host lady annoyst he helllll out of me!

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

I missed the first few episodes, how exactly did they pick the finalists?

People sent in videos (some narrative, others music) which were posted on the site. In addition to having your video posted, you could comment on other people's entries. Some would spend days doing that. Some group viewed the films and--like most reality shows--picked a group that would play well on TV. They weeded out the initial picks by having giving each of the top 30(?) finalists one of three loglines, which they had to develop a story around which they would then pitch to Fisher, Marshall, and Ratner. After those cuts, they did the 24 hour Three-person crew shoot which got 'em down to 18 I think. When voting started with the 1-minute films, they bumped off a further three.

I know some of this because someone I work with entered and was on the website constantly. She didn't make it.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

LOL Marty

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh man Jessica What'sHerButt's film was crapola.

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

oh i missed last night but i don't know if i care that much to go watch online

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)
