i'm watching live tennis on tv for the first time in an age. the weather looks appalling and there have been rain delays all day. watching serena williams' first round match against tsvetana pironkova, who beat venus in the first round of the australian open 06, and who is halfway to doing the same to serena, who is playing really badly.

ooh! nice backhand winner from pironkova!

and now one from serena! maybe they will start remembering to hit the ball inside the court from here on in.

draws at http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/index.html

i haven't thought about predictions at all yet so here goes with some spur of the moment QF picks:

Henin v S.Williams (who will probably come back to take this match)
Jankovic v Petrova (jelena j has played what seems like every week this year so far; she's clearly going to run out of gas at some point because of her insane schedule, but i think she'll still be fresh enough to beat venus in the third round, and she owns her projected 4th-round opponent, dementieva)
Ivanovic v Peer
Chakvetadze v A.Bondarenko (sharapova is in dreadful form and will be lucky to survive emilie loit in the first; patty schnyder is the obvious candidate likely to take advantage but alona bondarenko's been in very strong, consistent form recently, and batty patty remains batty) (also this bracket features the most likely sister match-up: there could be an ALL-BONDARENKO third round!)

most exciting first round match = marion baroli v aravane rezai. both french up'n'comers with mad dads: bartoli may be the seeded one but rezai's the one who a) refuses to speak to the french media because of their negative stories about her family, which are probably all accurate given that b) she and her father are actually the subject of a two-year ban from using the roland garros facilities, such is the extent of his bad behaviour - she is apparently being permitted to enter the grounds to play her matches and nothing more, c) la famille rezai were also reported to have travelled to australia earlier this year in a caravan. yep, caravane rezai more like.

Very excited about this for the rather boring and obvious reason that Federer blitzed Nadal 6-0 in the 3rd in the Hamburg final a week ago which means that the (non-calendar year) Grand Slam is very much ON. It has happened before in the men's game in my lifetime - just - but if I can't recall the Moon landings, I obviously can't recall Laver beating Roche at Forest Hills.

Shame Tony R is unlikely to play his part in history this time; funny how Fed drops his coach and tends to immediately go up a level (see: 2003 Masters Cup). Still, so much of his 2007 clay court form has been sufficiently wretched to cast doubt on his ability to genuinely get through what is a nasty draw.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 27 May 2007 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yay for Roland Garros! And for once i have tickets and shall be there tuesday which maks me very happy.

Jibe, Sunday, 27 May 2007 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Woo a grand slam thread! I look forward to some incisive play from the usual suspects, and the charmingly clueless idiocies from the likes of me.

GO MARIA ELENA!

Mark C, Sunday, 27 May 2007 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I feel like Mark C -- I have nothing to add, but I get excited for every new tennis thread. In 5 years of reading ILE I think tennis threads have been the highlight.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 28 May 2007 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

Reading an article yesterday about Fed's drop in % of Fed's 1st serve - apparently Hamburg's type of clay is more suited to Fed's game. Also Nadal usually doesn't compete in Hamburg, and ws more tired.

I'd interpret all of this as: maybe Fed has gone closer to removing that block he had against Nadal on clay. However he will have a bad game on the way to the final that might actually knock him out before he gets there.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 28 May 2007 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

federer v nadal really is the rivalry that keeps on giving - even when the outcome is v predictable (and it usually is! most of the time the favourite has won) theer are always so many questions hanging over the result - can nadal compete with federer on a fast court, how close is federer to 'solving' nadal on clay etc etc.

regardless of the qualifications - and i think the 0-6 third set does indicate nadal was tired - i think hamburg was still v important for fed, it put an immediate end to his so-called "slump" (if only my slumping favourites could slump like roger!) for one.

it's raining, again, they're showing murray v nadal at the australian open - missed it at the time, it really is a treat!

lex pretend, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

ooh! it's stopped raining! venus williams v alize cornet coming up!

lex pretend, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'm looking at live action now (I think) - Venus W held serve in opening game v Cornet despite having a break point.

Fred Nerk, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

Lex, my mum voted Nadal best arse in tennis in her annual Wimbledon cheek check. What say you?

suzy, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

wish it were drier

RJG, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

nadal has an amazing arse and indeed body, generally. not really my favoured body type but it's impressive...one of my friends was at the indian wells tournament in california earlier this year, and apparently there was a group of very SoCal ladies chatting in the lounge, and into one of the lulls in conversation one of them dropped the line "oh NADAL, i'm here for his buns and his guns!"

lex pretend, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

ice cream cone is v feisty. venus started off error-riddled but cleaned it up fairly swiftly - thought she'd run away with it but cornet managed to break back.

and now she's 0-40 down again, oh well

lex pretend, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

The Cone has another break point

Fred Nerk, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

She tried a cheeky drop shot which Venus saw coming from Versailles. Bye bye break.

Fred Nerk, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

one of cornet's drop shots finally works!

clear by now that for all her feistiness she can't really hurt venus though - maybe if she'd taken that point to go up 5-4 in the first things would be different but the wind seems to have been taken out of her sails somewhat. still, this is a v entertaining match, some really nice rallies going.

lex pretend, Monday, 28 May 2007 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha buns'n'guns.

My mother does not use the word 'buns' in reference to anatomy. Ever.

suzy, Monday, 28 May 2007 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

watched Davy Denko paste the Italian, whatisname. Impressive.

So is going down a set and a break and then storming back to win Serena's MO now? Last few times I've seen her it's been like this.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 28 May 2007 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Barry Davies is BACK. But so is the rain. I see two points of Fed-Russell and they're off. 6-4 4-1.

Is this the coldest Whitsun holiday ever? 6.2C here in Crystal Palace.

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 May 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

What are ther guns in buns 'n' guns?

Come on Cornet! Or has it finished.

Mark C, Monday, 28 May 2007 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

No one has mentioned that Potito Starace (who would surely be wearing ILX-emblazoned clobber if we were in the business of corporate sponsorship) won through to the second round yesterday. It's United Colours of Benneteau or Tone Berlocq up next and then, possibly, Federer. He could be on telly!

(Cornet melted: four and three).

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 May 2007 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

They were showing Clidge-FordCapri from 2001 but at 5-5 in the final set the in-laws voted for Two Ronnies. It's the King Singers.

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 May 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Rodge clinically disposing of Rosalind Russell.

Earlier, Looby Loo won a third-set tiebreaker against Clement.

Fred Nerk, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Roddick in trouble vs Andreev; AR won the first set & was a break up in the second but Igor has taken over: Pandy serving at 2-4 40/40 in the 4th, trailing by two sets to one.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Look at me - it's just like the old days. I'm staying late at work to follow a tennis match on a self-refreshing web page.

Roddick serving to stay alive at 3-5.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, in other news, Henman is two sets down to a Latvian named Ernests Gulbis who is ranked #84.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

Match point Andreev.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

Roddick holds. Curses. I've missed another train.

Dlouhy and Kohlschreiber 9-9 in the 5th out on court 10.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

Roddick out. Lovely. I don't care if I get wet on the way to Charing Cross now.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

all-round lovely results to come home to! dickhead AND blake out without me so much as having to even acknowledge that they turned up at all, henperson going down to a latvian teenager who appears to be a plural of himself, BIG AKGUL from UZBEKISTAN winning her second grand slam match, demented diva and weird jelena avoiding upsets, gasquet AND allez my son appearing to - fingers crossed - both have their heads screwed on right for once (ew, anatomical mixed metaphors). WOO!

sad about the rad wanksta and caravane, though; and our pet is unlucky to have succumbed to injury in her second consecutive roland garros first round.

EPICZ - two so far; kohlschreiber over dlouhy 17-15 in the fifth on the men's side, recent first-time titlist miracles sequera razzing razzano 9-7 in the third. her reward is...serena williams.

SLUMPZ - oh anna-lena groenefeld, it surely gets no worse than losing to a veteran french wild card who's never cracked the top 100.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

(notes on BIG AKGUL: she is like 6'3", she plays a limited schedule in the challengers because apparently she can barely afford to travel to tournaments; people who have seen her say she has massive potential, but because she can't afford to hire a coach either basically goes out to each match and blasts the ball without a gameplan.)

What would an ILE Tennis Thread Sponsor expect on the clothing for our money?

edwardo, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 02:58 (nineteen years ago)

thank u for starting this thread :-)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

"EPICZ - two so far; kohlschreiber over dlouhy 17-15 in the fifth"

Unlike that bogus 'epic' between Fabulous Phil and Nadal over most of the first week of the Oz Open, obviously this match really was long, didn't just seem so.

Maybe Kohlschlau v 'Dlouhy the Dflhy' was epic as in Ulysses, whereas K v Nadal was just 1000 disjointed pages with the pretensions of epic-ality.

Fred Nerk, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

Had a very good day yesterday, saw the Groenefeld defeat, Robredo's victory, Hewitt's thrashing of Miyrni (already forgot how to spell his name), Santoro (who was fun to watch)-Chela, PH Mathieu- Mayer, Nadal-Del Potro, Djokovic-Gilardo and Karlovic-Blake. A good day indeed. I even was a meter away from Federer at one point, he was coming into the Philippe Chatrier just as Nadal's game was beginning.

Jibe, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

Hewitt thru. I blinked and missed Molik's tournament (always a shame). Pratt wins, Sammy the Stoat on later tonight.

Tipsarevic has put an erratic and distracted Safin on the plane. Local hero Gasquet's Open has not much longer to run either. Sharapova unconvincing but through, Mesmo bagelled Granville in the first set but about to go 3-0 down (one break) in the second.

In a tragic result for tennis fashion, Meghann Shaughnessy is also through, thrashing Princess Anastasia Myskina 6-1 6-0. Meggsie faces yet another Russian, Svetlana Kuznetsove (hereafter, 'Svetakuz') in the next round.

Fred Nerk, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

oh anastasia :( though i'd totally expected it - it's her first tournament back from foot surgery and she herself said she only played to test the foot out.

can't believe flava flav managed to lose to pratt on clay!

mesmo through in two, eventually.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

anastasia :(

Anastasia Myskina won the 2004 French Open. Now she'd love to win a match.

Myskina lost 6-1, 6-0 to Meghann Shaughnessy in the first round Wednesday, making the Russian 0-7 since August, when she injured a toe on her left foot.

She had surgery in January and was hampered in her movement against Shaughnessy, sometimes not even trying to chase down shots.

"You can see that I'm moving like a big cow now," Myskina said. "I can't run."

Players have been sympathetic about her injury -- but she's not sure if it's totally sincere.

"All of them smile to me. So it's nice," Myskina said. "But you never know what they say behind your back."

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 May 2007 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

Stose squeaks home v Kiritekanawalenko in a 'Life Savers Mint' of a match: sharp at the edges but nothong whatsoever in the middle. 6-1, broke then imploded in the second, first to lose serve in the decided but clawed back at the very end of the last possible moment.

Fred Nerk, Thursday, 31 May 2007 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

the possibility of an ALL-BONDARENKO BATTLE is receding into the distance as k-bond trails batty patty by a set and 2-5 :(

however i like the look of young romanian ioana-raluca olaru, who is playing her first ever grand slam and on course for a third round spot.

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 May 2007 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

But now I'm sad, I'm welling up

Tom D., Friday, 1 June 2007 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

oh and re sweater v megz last night - terrible match. sweater won in the end but god she's sloppy sometimes.

lex pretend, Friday, 1 June 2007 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

anastasia's interview on the RG site makes up a bit for it:

Q. Because you're limited with your foot, how does that change the way you play and the way you approach the match?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: A lot. You can see that I'm moving like a big cow now, so of course it's changed a lot.
...
Q. The fact that your boyfriend is on the men's tour, do you travel with him a little bit?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Which one are you talking about?
...
Q. Do the other women players show sympathy for you? Do they say, you know, they understand and feel badly for your problems?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: You know, all of them smile to me. So it's nice. But you never know what they say behind your back.

thing is she clearly wasn't ready to come back, i doubt we'll see her at wimbledon, and in the rest of the interview she kind of implies that she was enjoying her life on the sidelines...actual proper retirement may be imminent :(

lex pretend, Friday, 1 June 2007 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

I hope someone who has the technology and the free time can post a BBCi screenshot of Our Man Starchy battling with Fed on Court Chatrier this afternoon for the enduring benefit of all work-bound ILX tennisseurs. I feel it would be something of a high water mark for this family of threads.

Michael Jones, Friday, 1 June 2007 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Q. The fact that your boyfriend is on the men's tour, do you travel with him a little bit?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Which one are you talking about?

Cheeky!

Tom D., Friday, 1 June 2007 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's me they were referring to. Last 16 of Norbury & District level III satellite (non-wheelchair division) - I got a couple of byes - and a controversial no-show at the Hamburg Masters = current ranking of 23,441. The "little bit" of travelling was basically us riding the 450 down to Thornton Heath together to buy new grip tape. She had an out-of-date Oyster. It was kinda embarrassing.

Michael Jones, Friday, 1 June 2007 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Fed 6-2 first set vs Spudwelike. Chip'n'charge, Potsy!

Michael Jones, Friday, 1 June 2007 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

Rodge has just battled disinterest to hold in marathon game 3 v 'What do Australians make chips from?' Starace.

The Foxtel logo says it's live but Foxtel are well-known liars. Is it?

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

Web says we've had five games in set two (3-2 Rodge), so they're fibbing a bit.

Michael Jones, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I meant in set 2 - so I'll give Le Murde le benefit of le doubt this time.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

Meanwhile Vaseline is hanging on for grim death v Monaco (who just served for the match and blew it) and PH Mathieu is also serving for the match v one Gilles Simon, whose profile says he was born in 1984 but looks about 13.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

I only meant they were fibbing by about 5min. Obviously they lie about everything else continuously.

Rodge broke for 5-3. You honestly could've staked your house on that.

Michael Jones, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

Geraldine collapsed late on vs Huge Knee, so Mikhail will be next up for Feddy.

Michael Jones, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

Paul Henry Matthews became the second blower of a match service gane inside half an hour, and Carly Simon (I considered 'Paul' but that would be too confusing) has forced a tiebreaker.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

Walking through town and Fedge-Stodge was just starting on the big screen, and it made me feel all nostalgic. Potito sliced two backhands into the net, and I was near-overcome...

The other singles encounters atm - PHM has a tie-break in the fourth (will Gilles feel nerv(ous)?), Dani With One I is a set and break up on There's Only One Olga Poutchkova, and Viva La Bammer is 4-3 up on Gnarly Na Li in the first.

William Bloody Swygart, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

The Principality is through!

lex pretend, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

lex pretend, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

PHM 5-1 up in tiebraker with another serve in the can.

Simon might be Garfunkeled this time.

(Agree totally re Pooch v Dani the Drainpipe.)

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

Fed mashes Potito 6-0 in third.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry, I just have to say that I'm really upset Martina isn't playing this year. I'm really proud of her for getting back up to #6, but I want her to win an Open so bad.

That's it. Disappointment isn't so eloquent, is it? =P

Surmounter, Friday, 1 June 2007 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

Stose quickly 2-0 down v Vlad the Impaler, only holds in game 3 with difficulty.

Venus offers the Greg Chappell Defence after loss to Wierd Al: 'I'm playing well but making too many mistakes'.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

First leg of the 'Let's annoy Lex' double-header is in the bag, as the Thighless Wonder wraps up Massive Pout 6-3 in the third. Gnarls leads the Baminator 2-1 in the second.

New on court - Disco Volandri and Ljubi Lju 2-3, Australia's Sweetheart battling to break back against (Hey Now, Hey Now) Nic Vaidisova. (It does scan, sort of.)

William Bloody Swygart, Friday, 1 June 2007 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Sammy the Stoat about to go two breaks down.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

Na-Na-Na-Na, Na-Na-Na-Na, hey-hey-ey, goodbye - Gnarls Austracised by La Bammer 6-3 in the second.

VaidIfRemoved takes the first set 6-4, a few minutes after Pippo does the same to Ljubi. Out on Chatrier, Force 9 Gael is getting That Andy Murray Feeling against Nailbags (with serve), and Russian Dave's 4-3 up with a break on Llodratron.

William Bloody Swygart, Friday, 1 June 2007 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Vaidisova serving for the second set and the match.

Stose has been playing catch-up ever since she dropped the first two games of set 1 in about three minutes then held game 3 in about three hours. Since that glacially slow start she has played solidly without ever threatening to close the gap. In many ways she's similar to Hewitt (albeit better looking) in that her bad is absolutely bloody awful whereas her good is merely good. Neither did Vlad look unbeatable. (She's through.)

We now have highlights of Boom Boom Baumer v Mohammad Na Li. The Fox logo in the top right still says 'live'.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 1 June 2007 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

shazbot through in two very poorly played sets over kudryavtseva.

watching mesmo v safarova now - hasn't taken amelie long to retreat into her uselsss defensive mode at all, she had an early 3-0 lead but when safarova's massive forehand started to click she ran off 4 straight games, ft one amazing point where she ran down a mauresmo drop shot which the crowd was already applauding.

I Love Lucie Safarova has dumped Mesmo, Ivanavic did an even more comprehensive job on IRO, who didn't do badly for a 'leftover Scrabble hand'. Boom Crash Sugiyama out to Chakvetadze. Sharpier, SvetaKuz and Batty Patty also through.

Currenty, Funky Cold Medina is level with Dani the Downpipe (but in immediate trouble serving first in the decider), while there are no Hajek-tives to describe the hole Jan H is now in against Baghdatis.

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 2 June 2007 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

At work, Dani With One I vs. When Annie Met Garry on the telly. However, the telly's just far enough away that I can't see the bleedin' ball, and WAMG isn't the most emotionally demonstrative of people, so trying to read her body language is hardly telling me anything. I can't read the scores either, so I did spend a good 15 minutes thinking she was Sania Mirza. Still, I'm here til midnight - IBM scoreboard ahoy!

Oooh, disputed line call!

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Juan Pablo Montoya (Thick as a) Brzizcki 5-0 down in the first to Carlos Moya, who may have been ranked no 1 for around 10 minutes, sometime about four Popes and six Presidents ago.

FCM still fighting hard, still on serve. The official NBT from the Oz Open, Novak Djokovic (seeded 6) just away against local Olivier Patience, better known as Ollie the Card Game.

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 2 June 2007 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

NBT = Next Big Thing.

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 2 June 2007 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

i love djokovic, he's amazing. serbia has really BROUGHT IT this year.

lex pretend, Saturday, 2 June 2007 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

I have no idea how the disputed line call turned out. 4-3 in the third, anyway.

IN OTHER NEWS: Iggy Andreev And His Abs Of Steel take the first set off PHM on a tiebreak; Sheik No Vak vs. Havvaliddull Patience is 1-1 with serve; Pretty Brzezicki pulls one game back against Moya; Dudley JB's is 5-0 up in the third on Ozzie Hernandez.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Funky Cold seems to be edging on top of the Drinking Straw On Legs, having pushed her to deuce in all three service games thus far. Still, we know that means squat if the DSOL latches onto s couple of returns in a row and puts her under sudden pressure.

Methinks the way Jonas is going, 'Patrick' Hernandez wishes he hadn't been born and will not stay alive in this match a whole lot longer.

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

AMG goes 5-4 up. She's clenching her fist an awful lot.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Match point AMG. Some Spaniards clap a bit, possibly thinking "She's everything Virginia Ruano Pascal could have been." Possibly, I can't really see.

Except Dani With One I hangs on, and now has Advantage.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Murd TV currently showing Bjorkman (who must be even older than Moya) still making short work of Hernandez.

FCM has the DSOL at deuce AGAIN!

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Game duly salvaged. 5-5.

Elsewhere, Iggy now 3-0 up on Mathieu Suite, NoDjo and Ollie 3-4 with serve, Shittin' Brzezicki 2-2 in the second with Moya, Bjorkperson about to go 4-1 up on Ozzie.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Europsport leaves the tennis in favour of the Giro d'Italia. AMG goes 6-5 up.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

Murd still on Bjerk v Hernandez. Jonas has another break and will serve for the match.

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

FCM is through! The DSOL has slurped her last.

Likewise JB, whose hyperventilating excitement at winning a 3rd round match makes one fearful for his health should he actually make the final.

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

After all that, her reward is a meeting with Ana In The Van, who has dropped a total of nine games in three matches thus far. Shit business, innit?

Women's last 16:

Henin - Bammer
Safina - Serena
Jankovic - Bartoli
Garbin - Vaidisova
Ivanovic - Medina Garrigues
Peer - Kuznetsova
Safarova - Chakvetadze
Schnyder - Sharapova

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking of crappy, Fox has now switched to Moya v Bricks, who is again in trouble on serve.

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

Djokovic-Patience is shaping up to be one to watch. NoDjo took the first on a tie-break, and him and Olly are now frantically trading deuces on his first service game.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

And Olly P snaffles it to go a break up early! Lenglen may well be going wild, it's hard to tell because Eurosport is still carrying the Giro d'Italia - this wouldn't be so bad in itself, except it's an individual time trial, so it's just a continuous shot of one man riding a bike, then it cuts to another man riding a bike and I can't tell how either of them is doing. Which is frustrating.

PHM is maintaining parity in the third with Iggy, 3-3 at present. Brick Top's fightback is looking increasingly unlikely.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

Iggy then rattles off three games to go marching onwards. Brickie's come back to 4-4 in the third with Moya. Hmm...

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Giggles. Some of these names are new. Curse me not having pay television right about now.

edwardo, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

Moya finally kills the Brz 7-5 in the third. Olly P has a service game to take the second set, but he's just ceded advantage to NoDjo...

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

But the momentum swings back to the French lad, and he seizes the set 6-2! <I>Va-t-il remporter la gloire?</I>

Rafa's just taken the court to face off against Bertie Montanes. Held his first service game.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Stoopid tags.

Anyway, Patience is 3-2 up in the third with another break of serve. Rafa's 3-1 up and serving on Montanes, Hewie and Niems are going with serve thus far.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

He goes 4-2 up and suddenly the tennis is back on Eurosport! I still can't see exactly what's going on, but that's still something of a step up from the Giro.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

4-3. We are currently looking at a lady. Not sure why.

Oh, it's cos they're switching to Nadal-Montanes. Which doesn't entirely make sense either. Although Albie's on the verge of nabbing that break of service back at the moment...

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

It goes to deuce instead. Back to Djovo vs. Olly.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

And Olly has set point on the Djokovic serve... which he takes! The world #129 is sat on the edge of a massive upset here, and the crowd seems appreciative, so it's back to Rafa-Montanes again. Nadal 4-1 up and facing.

The elephant in the room - Hewitt-Nieminen. The Finn's taken the first set 6-1...

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey, you go to do some work for a minute... Djoko and Olly are at a tie-break. And Novak's 5-3 up.

Hewitt seized the second set off Nemo 6-3. Rafa's 4-3 up and serving in the second. Ferrer takes the first set 6-4 against 'dasco.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Novak takes the tie-break, fifth set here we come. Nadal goes two sets up on Monty.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Oh dear. Patience has blinked at just the wrong time - a shot goes long, Djokovic is 5-3 up and serving in the decider...

Nadal should clean up Montanes soon enough, he's 5-2 up in the third. Hewitt has two set points on Nemo in the third set of theirs. Ferrer and 'dasco are 5-4 with serve in their second set.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Two match points later, and Novak's wrecked the upset 6-3 in the decider. Bast. Five Frenchmen went into the third round, none of them came out the other side. Mazza Bartoli is the last hope for a Gallic triumph, and she's about to run into a Jankovic-shaped wall.

Hewie's taken the third set 7-5. Ferrer-Verdasco is in the midst of some second-set tiebreakery.

Oh, and Nadal's through, but you probably guessed that already.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

haha marion "i love cake" bartoli is the last french person!

djokovic v patience was a good match. djokovic is hott.

i can see ana ivanovic in her first grand slam final...

lex pretend, Saturday, 2 June 2007 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Hewitt scuttles Nemo 6-2 in the 4th. Dasco goes two sets to one up, taking the third 6-3. Hurry up and we can all go home, unless we're at work til midnight, like what I am. Enh.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

And Dasco gets the fourth set 6-3 as well to go through. Given that he's never been past the second round here before, getting shot of Ferrer in four sets is not too shabby an achievement.

Men's last 16:

Federer - Youzhny
Robredo - Volandri
Davydenko - Nalbandian
Canas - Monaco
Djokovic - Verdasco
Baghdatis - Andreev
Bjorkman - Moya
Hewitt - Nadal

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 2 June 2007 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Is Volandri quite good these days, then? Any chance of a top 20 ranking?

Mark C, Saturday, 2 June 2007 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

At work til 6, so let's be kicking off again, then.

Federer is opening again, and he's a set up on Youzhny, albeit that he had to go to a tie-break to get it. Henin's currently giving a fair old clattering to Bammer, 5-2 up in the first and serving. And if Shahar Peer's not very careful, she's about to be the first casualty of the day - 6-4 5-2 down to Sveta K.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

Also, there's a feller in the boys' singles called Danila Arsenov. Or at least, there was, till he got dumped out 6-2 6-0 by an Italian with a far less interesting name.

Henin takes the first 6-2. Peer holds serve and is clinging on at 5-3.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

She fails, and Kuznetsova is the first person into the quarters. Fedde gets an early break of serve in the second set.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Henin brushes aside Bammer in straight sets, Fedge is on the verge of doing the same to Youzhny. Ana In The Van takes yonks to close out the first set 6-3 against AMG. Ass-Canister and His Serene Highness Juan Monaco take the stage...

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

And on Court #2, it's France vs. USA in the men's doubles, as French youth icons Gael Monfils and Josselin Ouanna take on top seeds The Bryan Twins. The Bryans are currently 5-0 ahead.

Fedz is taking an inordinately long time to seal the deal on Youzhny. Predicted tone of press conference: terse.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

He gets through, anyhow. Canas is 4-0 up and serving in the first.

Earlier: straight set wins for Tommy Rob, Serena, and teen sensation Nikki V. Tom's yet to drop a set this tournament, and he faces Federer next...

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

federer v youzhny: youzhny tried his heart out, fed was sloppy. and it was still a straight-set win for fed, and there was never any point at which it looked like it might not be.

shall i call in sick to watch justine v serena on tuesday?

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 June 2007 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

Juan Monaco's just won his first game of the match. Pity he lost the seven that immediately preceded it.

AMG is being predictably gritty against Vanno, 4-3 with serve in the second. Jankz is already a break up on Maz. The Bryans ugg ugg ugg past the boy wonders for the loss of three games.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, scratch the 'predictably' from that - she's just taken the second set 6-3! Interesting times ahead?

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

HAHAHA jankovic just won the first set 6-1, barely sweating - she's wonderful to watch, so so slick and smart, she reminds me of myskina - anyway she has just extracted a chic little chanel purse from her tennis bag and is passing the time on this changeover doing her make-up. fabulous.

Fred Nerk, Sunday, 3 June 2007 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, Van's sealed it 6-3 in the third. Can Of Ass is now 2 sets to the good on Sha-La-La-La-Lala-Lye. The Jankster is 4-0 up in the second on Pistol Whip.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

The lesson on clay commences with Patty teaching Maria how to break back to 2-2. Next, she will learn frizzing.

The War On Court #1 continues - Chak took the first set 6-4, but she's now fighting to hold onto her serve at 3-0 down in the second. Denko has three set points at 5-3 on Nalbo's serve.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

He only needs one of them. Safarova goes 4-0 up, and is serving for 5-0 now...

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

And there's the bagel. Ouch. Patty moves to 5-2, having saved three break points in that last game.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

hee! batty patty just came from 0-40 down to win her service and lead 5-2 - the last point was TERRIFIC, she was yanking sharapova around the court like a puppet. moonballs, slices, huge topspin forehands to sharapova's BH, finished with a lovely drop-shot followed by an easy play into the open court.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

And in the blink of an eye, Anna C seals the deal 6-2. My Two Daves is now 6-5 to the ginger one. Shappa 5-2 up in the second.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

But Sharapova pulls it back to 7-7! Ah, interminable final sets, how I have missed you, sort of...

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 3 June 2007 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

The men's last 16 match with a solid late-'90s Sneaker Pimps and Heavy Stereo soundtrack - Moya-Bjorkman - is slowly going the way of the younger man. JB is really stringing out this late singles career renaissance, isn't he? Semis at Wimb last year and now only his second 4th round appearance at RG in 11 years. Djoko is cruising against Verdasco, two sets up.

I see Fed equalled McEnroe's record of 11 consecutive straight-sets GS wins (JPMcE: Wimb 84 r2 to USO 84 qf, I think). I guess they also now jointly hold the record for consecutive sets won in GS events at 35 (you could theoretically have 35 with a 10-match streak in the middle but I'm not trying to look that one up); the geezers at either end of Mac's streak were Paul McNamee (sneaked a third-set t/b on the opening day at Wimb) and Jimmy Connors (pushed Johnny M to five in the Flushing semi). Robredo and Roddick for Fed?

Sharap-Schnyder was amazin'.

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 June 2007 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

Nadal is murderizing Hewitt 6-3 6-1; next door Baggy and Andreev have split two lop-sided sets and are going with serve in set three.

(Moya and Djokovic won in three straight).

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 June 2007 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

The Simple Hommes quarter-final line-up:

Federer(1)-Robredo(9)
Davydenko(4)-Canas(19)
Djokovic(6)-Andreev(-)
Moya(23)-Nadal(2)

(Surprised at Baggy's demise - I had him down as 3rd- or maybe 4th-favourite for this).

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

woo igor! first grand slam QF, ace - great comeback from injury too. it didn't surprise me too much - the bagman's been inconsistent this year and i've never thought his game was that suited to clay, whereas andreev's got the topspin and the grinding ability to really wear him down.

i like all the dudes left, except canas.
and i HEART most of the girls left - victories for justine over serena, jelena over nicole and anna c over $harapova would make it all extra sweet. though another serena/maria final would be just about the worst thing ever. er except a nicole/maria final which would be UNWATCHABLE.

lex pretend, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

The only one that might not have upset potential there is Moya-Nadal, just cos Nadal is that blinkin' good.

Djoko-Iggy could really be something - to get this far, Andreev's had to go through Roddick, Massu, PHM and Baggy. The victory over PHM might be the most impressive, actually - straight-setting the leading French hope on Chatrier is not to be sniffed at. Russian Dave-Can Of Ass pits a former semi-finalist against a two-time quarter-finalist, and should basically be quite awesome.

And then there's Rodge vs. Rob. Fedz has yet to drop a set, but he's not come up against anyone who's looked like they might make him do so. In six visits to Roland Garros, T-Rob's reached the fourth round three times and the quarters twice. Could this be the year he breaks the glass ceiling?

William Bloody Swygart, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

federer v robredo is the only QF on either side i'm at all confident about predicting! i'll be surprised if fedex loses a set - remember how he basically used his match against robredo in australia as a practice session, and still won in straights?

more hesitant predictions:

davydenko v canas - canas has beaten federer twice this year already (on hard courts, at that), and could well be the man to spoil the "inevitable" final. he went into a mini-slump during the clay warm-ups but i think his performances here have emphatically put an end to that. i think he's capable of playing davydenko's game even better than KING KOLYA, and if it comes down to a physical battle i think canas has the edge. canas in 4.

djokovic v andreev - well, djokovic has been the other guy touted as a potential spoiler - it's a pity he ended up in nadal's section, when they played a few weeks ago djokovic looked rather helpless. no doubt djokovic has had a great year, but he's been shaky here and andreev seems to have finally got his top 30 form back. could be an upset here...andreev in 4.

nadal v moya - ok the only reason this is remotely iffy is b/c carlos was rafa's mentor, and i remember when rafa played him in miami last year, he froze up after winning the first set and lost like 6-2 1-6 1-6. i don't think this will happen though, nadal in 3.

henin v williams - GOD. i would say "all i want is a good match" but i DON'T because i can't watch it! i want a terrible error-strewn match with no drama (but still a justine win). anyway this could go either way but i think the fact that we're on justine's turf now will count - henin in 3.

jankovic v vaidisova - ok, nicole's scorelines have been impressive but she really hasn't played anyone of consequence - she's lucky she got such a soft draw in her first tournament back from her wrist injury. jankovic as we know has been stellar, but i worry that she's overplayed. still, jankovic in 2.

ivanovic v kuznetsova - REALLY hard to predict, this one. ana beat sweater in a third set TB a few weeks ago...this year sweater's thing has been to be very consistently turn up in a tournament's latter stages before losing in a tight match, usually to a solid top 20 player, ie no embarrassing losses but matches she should be winning if she wants to call herself elite. btw did you know that none other than federer himself picked sweater to win the title? ANYWAY her emphatic revenge on peer, who has given her hell this year, is a positive sign; who am i to argue with fed? kuznetsova in 3.

chakvetadze v sharapova - oh COME ON anna, prove that women's tennis doesn't totally suck right now! $haz is virtually incapacitated by her shoulder injury, she can't serve, she can't move on clay in the first place anyway, she will fight like hell but it should only take a bit of mental fortitude to send her home. DO YOU HAVE IT ANNA? sadly i think you don't. sharapova in 3 dreadful sets.

lex pretend, Monday, 4 June 2007 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

i am ONE-ONE so far: weird jelena takes out darth vaida in straights, as predicted by moi. but lovely ana the lovely van takes out sweater in three! 6-0 3-6 6-1 is your rather odd score there.

$hazzer and J-single-H a set up on their respective opponents.

i'm pulling for justine generally but how much fun would an ALL-SERB final be? plus, indications are that jelena and ana are the new kim and justine (except, you know, hotter): word is that they loathe each other (though both claim to be best friends with novak djokovic).

also:

Q. Do you watch Jelena, and do you get anything from her and her success in the last year?

ANA IVANOVIC: I prefer to watch men's tennis. I think we can learn a lot from it.

but could the streak end?! rog 1-5 down in the second to robredo...

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, it does. I suppose if you're going to lose a set, lose it like that. Is anyone watching this? Federer losing a 1-6 set is such a rare occurrence (last occasion - maybe last year's RG final?) that one inevitably wonders if the guy is injured.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

maybe his tennis skillz have been affected by his prediction skillz.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

LOL at Federer response - up 5-0 in the 3rd.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

6-1 third set to Rodge and immediately up a break in set four.

DavyD up a set and a break vs Canaster.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

A mere blip from RF - through to his third straight Garros semi 7-5 1-6 6-1 6-2. NikDav looks like joining him: now up two sets and a break vs Can'tBeArsed.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

surprised that KING KOLYA is having it so easy (and seriously would not count canas out even at this stage) - but if he wins, it could be argued that roger dodged a bullet there.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

You called it, Lex - Canas breaks back in the third for 4-4. I think the chances of this going on for another two hours are slightly greater than it being over inside the next two games.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

Ahem, well I did say slightly greater...Denko breaks and will serve for the match.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Would now be a good time for you to explain all the punning names that aren't immediately obvious? Especially KING KOLYA - I can't figure out if the caps are part of the nickname or lex is really trying hard for people to notice teh funny :)

Mark C, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

yeah totally.

kinda fascinating women's SFs:

justine v jelena - i think the following head-to-head says it all:

2005 Charleston 64 Clay (O) J.HENIN-HARDENNE 5-7 6-4 6-3
2006 U.S. Open SF Hard (O) J.HENIN-HARDENNE 4-6 6-4 6-0
2007 Doha SF Hard (O) J.HENIN 6-7(5) 6-2 6-4
2007 Warsaw SF Clay (O) J.HENIN 7-5 2-6 6-4
2007 Berlin QF Clay (O) J.HENIN 3-6 6-4 6-4

proof that jelena can certainly hit with justine, and that her game is definitely of sufficient quality to make a potential win at least plausible. proof, too, that by now justine is in jelena's head, as they say. jelena had points for a 6-4 5-2 lead in the us open match, but failed to win another game; she led their last encounter in berlin 4-0 in the third, before - yep - failing to win another game. can she get over that? i don't think she can yet. in fact i think justine might record her first straight-sets win over jelena.

ana v maria: well.

who's the better clay player? ana, no question. she's adapted her power game to it very well, as her results bear out, while sharapova has yet to make a final on clay.
who's healthier? ana, no question. maria's shoulder injury continues to prevent her from serving at 100%, and it's been noted in this tournament that she has at times just served second serves.
who's in better form? ana, no question. riding a 10-match winning streak, off the back of her second tier 1 title in berlin; at RG itself, she's put up better scores against better opponents.

who, however, has in her first grand slam SF? ana. if nerves kick in at all, sharapova will pounce. sadly i think this will ensue - it would be ridiculous to see sharapova in the RG final, ludicrous i say! but after a draw consisting entirely of inexperienced teenagers and notorious headcases it's the most likely scenario. i hope justine guts her in the final.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

KING KOLYA = i guess referring to the least-recognised world no 3 ever, with a notoriously unimposing game style, in the style reserved usual;ly for mighty world champions, is a humour of its own?

(kolya = russian diminutive of nikolay)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

So, it's Federer-Davydenko in the semis; RF leads their head-to-head 8-0, including a straight-sets win on Hamburg clay two years ago. Odds-on an eighth consecutive GS final for Roger, then. Which is probably another bloody record.

(I bet there have been less recognised world #3s, Lex. Eddie Dibbs, maybe? I'll work on it...)

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't Ljubicic number 3 at some point?

word is that they loathe each other (though both claim to be best friends with novak djokovic)

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

Andreev in 4? LOL. Djokovic in 3. Lex, pls also be wrong about $haz/Vana.

edwardo, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

i would be v content with being wrong there.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Anonymous world #3s - I was going to say Magnus Norman but I looked him up and he was briefly #2 in summer 2000! WTF*!

(* he won tournaments in Stuttgart, Umag, Auckland, Long Island, Shanghai, Bastad & Rome, was a semifinalist in the Aussie Open and lost in the Roland Garros final to Kuerten...so fair enough-ish).

First set Nadal 6-4, btw.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ana pwning Mazza! SQUEE!

edwardo, Thursday, 7 June 2007 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

ANA! :D

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

gosh i wish i could watch this - still, even reading what the bbc site is saying is vicarious pleasure:

"This is really good stuff now from Ivanovic who is winning the battle from the baseline comprehensively. At one point Sharapova tries to change things with a sortie to the net, only to see the ball walloped straight past her."

Sharapova at net = a joke which never gets old

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

6-2 4-0!

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

ana may be inexperienced but i don't recall her giving up a lead like this in any match she's played EVER

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

GO FOR THE BAGEL, ANA, THAT WOULD BE HILARIOUS

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

5-0!

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

i also wish I could see this - Sharapova at the net is indeed hilarious. I can imagine she looks indignant every time she gets passed, like a bunny rabbit with too high a sense of self-worth.

edwardo, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

i think this would be the first time sharapova has ever lost a full match to a younger player. (she lost to ivanovic in tokyo earlier this year but retired when down 1-6 1-0.)

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

This is really excellent (and making me feel better about Serena totally folding to Henin).

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

HI DERE, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

btw she is very pretty

HI DERE, Thursday, 7 June 2007 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

i was right about one semi anyway - henin gets her first straight set win over jankovic, 6-2 6-2. she's gotta be the favourite now - though i'm aware, at the back of my mind, that in the past year and a half she's lost 3 slam finals i'd pegged her as the overwhelming favourite to win...

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

lta, hang your head in shame:

Q. Before you went to Switzerland, can you tell us what the facilities were like back home where you practiced?

ANA IVANOVIC: Well, to tell you the truth, I grew up playing in a swimming pool. It's a club where they had olympic swimming pool, and then it was very expensive to keep it warm during the winter, and there was not many people using it. So they emptied the swimming pool, and they put carpet inside, and they placed -- (laughing) it's true. They placed two tennis courts and that's where I grew up practicing.

And it was impossible to play crosscourt, because it was this far from the wall. So we had to keep playing down the lines. And that was the courts we had during the winter.

In the summer was better situation. We had a lot of other clay courts. But still, these days we have maybe one or two hard court, outdoor. And it's very -- it's very hard for us to practice there.

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Final, I say Henin, as well, in two. Two and two over the form player, that is some serious skillz.

Mens semis: Federer in 3, Nadal in 4.

edwardo, Thursday, 7 June 2007 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

Also, note use of PUNCTUATION in <a href="http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/bios/ws/wtaqp80.html";>this girl</a>'s name. Is it an actual full stop, or is this a rendering of a letter the character set doesn't support?

edwardo, Thursday, 7 June 2007 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, ffs, keep forgetting links are different now.

edwardo, Thursday, 7 June 2007 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

Federer takes two tight sets but Davy serves for the third...

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 June 2007 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Roger breaks back after an epic game; Nik also served for the second set and has missed something like 14 break-points, so RF might be riding his luck in this.

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 June 2007 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

RF 4-2 up in the t-b...

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

RF loses his mini-break advantage but ND faces a match point at 5-6 anyway...

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

Roger into the final 7-5 7-6 7-6; Davy led 4-2 in the first set (and squandered a further 10 break points), served for the second at 5-4 and led 5-2 in the third. Federer is a lucky boy.

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Nadal up two sets and a break - another close match but the champ's doing enough. Dream final is on.

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 June 2007 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

Davy v. Goliath was frustrating. Feds wasn't extactly on his game and I was sure Davy's speed and prodigious groundies would give fits, and they did, but somehow all the breaks go to R-Fed.

edwardo, Saturday, 9 June 2007 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

great start from ivanovic! pity it only lasted one and half games. from 0-1 0-40 henin has reeled off four straight, and ivanovic can find neither her first serve nor her backhand.

lex pretend, Saturday, 9 June 2007 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

it's getting even worse, 2 DFs to give up her serve in the first game of the second set.

lex pretend, Saturday, 9 June 2007 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Gosh! This is... a rout.

edwardo, Saturday, 9 June 2007 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

lex pretend, Saturday, 9 June 2007 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

ok, positives - we have matched elena in 04, and done better than mary in 05.

lex pretend, Saturday, 9 June 2007 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

6-1, 6-2. That's right, just two holds of serve for Ivanovic. She must feel ooh, about this high: |

edwardo, Saturday, 9 June 2007 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah and she matched maria in australia!

no of total games justine henin has lost in her 4 roland garros finals = 16

lex pretend, Saturday, 9 June 2007 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

this also takes henin's slam total to 6, meaning she's now surpassed martina hingis and venus williams...

Federer is getting lots of break points. And not converting them.

edwardo, Sunday, 10 June 2007 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

and not even playing that badly on them - his backhand is really on today. but he's still missed like 8 break points in three nadal service games!

lex pretend, Sunday, 10 June 2007 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

and typically nadal converts on his first.

lex pretend, Sunday, 10 June 2007 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

lex pretend, Sunday, 10 June 2007 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Roger gets a break in the second!

edwardo, Sunday, 10 June 2007 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

and it's one set apiece. Or something. No, not something. That.

edwardo, Sunday, 10 June 2007 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Nadal takes the third. Fatherly duties are keeping me away from watching much of this, but seeing as how my nerves were jangling after all those break-point misses in set one, it's probably for the best.

Is Fed still attacking like he was at the start of set two?

Michael Jones, Sunday, 10 June 2007 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

it's an odd match, he's attacking but inconsistently...like he's forgetting to do it all the time. and he's still shanking forehands, but not so much that you could say he's playing really badly.

lex pretend, Sunday, 10 June 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Keeping popping my head in to see Rafa holding serve with more and more ease. Doesn't seem a way back here for Rodge.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 10 June 2007 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

sadly not...oh well. i don't know why he always looks so inhibited against rafa. it wasn't a great match.

The leap back into the top ten clearly indicates that Andy Murray should avoid playing as long as possible.

Mark C, Monday, 11 June 2007 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, if only he didn't have all those lovely hardcourt points to defend over the summer (and last 16 at Wimb wasn't too shabby either). But, yeah, I can see Roddick and Blake sliding if they fail to repeat their summer '06 form (but so will Murray).

I think I missed the point yesterday when the final started to turn Nadal's way. Federer was superb for most of the first set and should've led 5-1; even after that throwing that away his more aggressive approach seemed to be undoing Nadal in the 2nd. I was really surprised to come back in to find Fed 2-4 in the 3rd and, later, a break down in the 4th too. Hey - maybe RF needs a coach? Perhaps "get 1x game plan" might've worked yesterday.

Michael Jones, Monday, 11 June 2007 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

sadly roddick still has room to build quite a cushion of points at wimbledon :(

i think rog had a decent game plan but just executed it too inconsistently...

lex pretend, Monday, 11 June 2007 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Saw a quote where Fed basically admitted he needs a game plan, so, you know...too many unforced errors but also v poor 1st serve %

This keeps one of the great stories in sport going, tho', so I'm not complaining.
