I thought Jonah Hill's (I had to look his name up on IMDB) character in Knocked Up was the funniest in the movie. So I is looking forward to this thing.

I suspect this is going to have a longer shelf life than Knocked Up (which was hilarious, but I'm not dying for the DVD release or anything).

msp, Saturday, 18 August 2007 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

Apart from the many many lolz, I liked the way the relationship between the two high school friends was made clear and real. I was a social outcast in high school, and I had that kind of friend as well. We were two against the world, etc. We hung out almost exclusively with each other. And we talked about sex as obsessively as these guys do (though not nearly as filthy). And yes, we loved each other, even though we were clearly headed in different directions. We got jealous of each other's girlfriends and had fights that were something approaching class conflicts, all of that. I think the movie captures that dynamic very well.

kenan, Saturday, 18 August 2007 07:14 (eighteen years ago)

Awesome. I agree with the "These Eyes" comments. SO FUNNY. I am a little bit in love with both Cera and Hill now - they were both so so cute. McLovin is a hero.

ENBB, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

I stayed and watched the end credits, and laughed a lot more, and that made me question my sexuality. :)

kenan, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

It wasn't a big laugh during the movie, but I keep chuckling thinking about how Seth explains that "something like 8% of kids do it." Like, that's what his therapist told him or something.

kenan, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

We were talking about that on the way out and one of my friends mentioned her old boss at the pizza place was definitely in the 8%.

In so many of these high school/college movies they get the actors to just play a type and the acting is either poor or lazy. I was kind of afraid after seeing the preview that the guy playing McLovin would just come off as a guy pretending to be really dorky, but my god, he really pulled off the intense awkwardness in a few scenes, as did all of them.

mh, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Intense awkwardness, but also a strange, totally unearned sense of self-possession. That's why he's McLovin.

kenan, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

"something like 8% of kids do it" was great. I totally expected it to be bed wetting and then couldn't stop laughing when he busted out with the dick drawing. The Mr. T dick was the best.

ENBB, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

I think the tiananmen square dick was the one that got me.

kenan, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

I occurs to me that McLovin is not only destined to be one those unforgettable-of-all-time movie characters, like Bluto Blutarsky or the like, but that he may become a new entry into our collective vocabulary. We'll have to wait and see how people start using the word "McLovin."

kenan, Saturday, 18 August 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

the best bit about that line is all the reactions to it. The blonde girl recoils like most girls would in the movies. The girl who likes him laughs at it in a guarded way. And he suddenly realizes that OMG THAT WAS NOT SMOOTH and tries to backtrack. Nice little moment.

kenan, Saturday, 18 August 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

ya it's got that '70s-'80s vibe, very intentionally, grain of the film and production design and all that but i think they had 'em whip out the cell phones really early on just to make it clear that it's now.

s1ocki, Saturday, 18 August 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

It was good, I'm still thinking about having my own handlebar moustache.

admrl, Sunday, 19 August 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

So, Martin Starr is in the movie apparently. I totally missed him. Was he one of the cocaine dudes?

Actually, the party scenes were my favorites in the movie. The period blood riff was a genius plot device at highlighting their anxiety about women.

Bill in Chicago, Sunday, 19 August 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

Also good for Bill from Freaks & Geeks/girl from Undeclared cameos.

gff, Sunday, 19 August 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

I like how they casted girls who were realistically the most (more?) attractive girls at a high school. They didn't just ask central casting for the hottest twenty year old unknown to play the dream girls. This made the attainment of the girl somewhat more plausible.

Cunga, Sunday, 19 August 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

I have to admit the heavy use of 1970s soul (mainly the psychedelic soul tracks) were a bit out of place throughout the film. Was it Judd Apatow wanking and needing to insert more memories from his own high school experiences into a film? Future audiences will be confused as to what era the film was trying to be from and why they intentionally tried to have that soundtrack.

Funny film, but how long can this creative team milk the adolescent experience (either through stories about actual kids or just "grown men" who refuse to grow up)? I've only seen, at most, one other film from Apatow, etc. but the bathetic way characters and plots get wrapped up is already stale to me.

Cunga, Sunday, 19 August 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

Do you want Apatow to make his next film about the inevitability of death?

Adolescents are awful, dirty people with heads full of wrong ideas, and that's a HUGE fount of comedy. It's also a great source of metaphors for ourselves as adults. What are we but kids who got bigger? And what do we DO with that? I don't think the subject is any more stale than any other big theme.

I very much admire the way he understands that these kids' ideas are WRONG, and makes that understood without obviously moralizing. He mixes filth with some solid wisdom that his favorite Rabbi would approve of, and it's something really new: the gross-out sex comedy with a brain and a heart.

kenan, Sunday, 19 August 2007 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

Do you want Apatow to make his next film about the inevitability of death?

Yes, because that's mankind's only other option should we stop discussing sex and reminiscing about high school. And, really, why not make that the subject of an Apatow comedy?

and it's something really new: the gross-out sex comedy with a brain and a heart.

That's not new and the film just becomes maudlin towards the end. There's a big quote Entertainment Weekly put up in an interview with Apatow where he says something ridiculous about immaturity. Not only does he exalt it (which is obviously okay to an extent, especially in comedy) but added something depressing like "It's the only thing I care about" or "You should never abandon it." Really?

The movie had some hilarious lines and bits but the "depth" comes like the moralizing lesson that arrives at the end of a GI Joe episode. The characters themselves are interesting enough for a comedy film but I can't help but feel letdown every time they try to resolve everything by pandering. I'm being too harsh though, I just think his films are getting too hyped as bringing depth to the genre.

Cunga, Sunday, 19 August 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

Have you seen Van Wilder? Apatow is the Bergman os the genre.

kenan, Sunday, 19 August 2007 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

There's a big quote Entertainment Weekly put up in an interview with Apatow where he says something ridiculous about immaturity... "It's the only thing I care about" or "You should never abandon it." Really?

Yes, really. Adolescence is the furnace that adults are forged in. Forgetting it is folly.

Is it really correct to call this an "Apatow film"? He has no writing or directing credit on it. To what extent did he have a creative role in the project?

o. nate, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

he produced, and while he didn't direct, it's certainly made by the "apatow camp"

kenan, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Things I said on the Chicago thread, for your edification:

I was a little underwhelmed too. I laughed a lot, but it wasn't really as complete a movie as 40-Year-Old Virgin or Knocked Up. Most of the laughs weren't really the result of the script or the jokes but were because of the reactions and the high standard of comedic acting - Michael Cera still kicks ass. I thought Seth Rogan and Bill Heder stole the movie as the incompetent cops.

I'm listening to this bootleg of one of Daft Punk's recent sets, and it's pretty awesome because it was clearly recorded from the audience. You can hear the music but it's in the background, and there's one guy standing near the mic saying things like "oh god" and "oh man, Daniel, here it comes" during the climactic build-ups. Plus lots of "woooooo!"s and cheering.

some of the reviews i've read have knocked the film for its visuals, saying it's basically unobtrusive, workmanlike, like tv, etc.

but i thought the film looked great! compared to other teen fare (mean girls, for ex, had a way flatter and more sitcommy feel), there was way more detail and richness. i mean, the day scenes had tons of sunlight, the night scenes were really dark and close.

At the screening I went to I felt people laughed at the jokes from the previews less than they would have if they were fresh. There were a whole bunch of lines that got much bigger laughs than anything from the preview.

However, when Kennedy and Stone had a minor feud, Stone befriended Biggs, leading Stone to record a hip-hop diss record against Kennedy entitled "F*** Jamie Kennedy". Looking at the IMDB page for Superbad I noticed that the girl McLovin hooks up with is known simply as "Aviva" in real life. That's kinda awesome.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 20 August 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

I think what always put me off about American Pie is that the characters are playing to some made-up or exaggerated type, and none of them really seemed like believable high school kids. Not that Superbad was completely true to life (especially with the amazingly awesome cop wish fulfillment scenes), but I definitely felt more empathy with the three main characters than I have with a lot of high school / college kid movies.

Nah, I like a lot of goofy high school/college kid films, it's just really nice when they're actually played by actors that aren't in their mid-20s

mh, Monday, 20 August 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

michael: "that was a nightmare."
clark: "i mean it was going alright until you lost it in there."
michael: "how did i lose it?!"
clark: "no, what the hell was that?"
michael: "what, me having a backbone? and principles?"
clark: "all i said was that we should consider getting a name actor to play the michael character and you lost it! you could have just humored them."
michael: "ok well what was it with you saying 'let's get the kutch onboard'?"
clark: "hey -- THEY brought up ashton, not me."
michael: "yeah well what if i brought up that guy from american pie, what's his name, the curly haired guy."
clark: "i don't know his name." (aside, to the camera) "can we even say names like this? i don't need another lawsuit right now."
michael: "JASON BIGGS!!" (muttering) "sue me you cocksucker, earn your first dollar in seven years."

nickalicious, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

A family in my row had to walk out halfway through the LUNCH PAIL O DICKS scene - I guess they hadn't realized this R-rated comedy wasn't suitable for their two 8-year olds.

milo z, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

admittedly, it's above and beyond even most r-rated comedies

kenan, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

they could have read a review or something, though. Didn't every critic in the country use some variant of the phrase "non-stop raunch"?

kenan, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

It's odd how the quasi-pornographic nature of the internet has caused a titanic expansion in a subculture that is so numb to raunch like the content in Superbad that they can't relate to people who are that shocked by the movie. I think just a few years ago there was more consensus about what is taboo (even if you ignored and broke said stigmas) what wasn't. Now it seems there's more confusion. Mainstream papers make the "gross factor" the film's main topic of conversation while people on the net seem much less likely to talk about. Is it just me?

Cunga, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

I just saw this in a theater packed full of students from a large state university. The Orson Wells reference got laughs from maybe three people. The line about going to a state school where the "chicks are twice as dumb and therefore twice as likely to fellate me" got massive guffaws. Hey, we are slutty!

I thought this was way better than Knocked Up, which was strangely the last movie I saw in a theater.

joygoat, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

Also, how long until a photo appears on the internet of someone with a tattoo of one of the penis drawings?

Always leave something for the sequel.

Cunga, Friday, 24 August 2007 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

as funny as this movie was I can't help but think a sequel would probably be tremendously awful, with one of the main three cast members leaving and being replaced, a horrific plot taking place at a college...ugh.

It's ironic that a sequel would probably be better if they waited ten to fifteen years.

Cunga, Friday, 24 August 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

Really enjoyed it, for most of the reasons listed above, but it's no Knocked Up; it's about 20 minutes too long. He's getting more explicit about his homoerotica. It's the small quirks that count: they're hung over after the party, but not hung over enough to avoid hanging out with each other.

The actors were a treasure, especially Cera; didn't know whether to lust for him or treat him like a little brother (is he 40?).

The strip mall where they buy the booze was scarily realistic: the tatty wood exteriors, parking lot, the key shop out front, etc...

It was hard to believe that this was the same guy who directed The Daytrippers.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 25 August 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

nate woolls, Friday, 7 September 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah i saw this the past weekend. i haven't seen a teenage sex comedy in a decade, but i'm sure it stacks up well with the best of them. funny stuff.

a lot of this movie was won in the casting. michael cera is great, though we all know him through arrested development. the actors that are his two friends were completely unknown to be, i don't see many current movies.

jonah hill is great, i imdbed him and i guess he claims he got his start in that huckabees movie i never saw. i kind of doubt this, there was something so familiar about his face, i couldnt put my finger on it. then the other day i realized what i knew him from.. a disturbing movie poster seared into my brain.

I like imagining him opening all those beers to fill that detergent container.

I can't think of any other time a period blood stain has made an appearance in a movie.

Great acting, all around. None of the characters were easily discarded nobodies (except maybe the drunk bum in the bar). I loved seeing the liquor store guy at the party later. The silliness/dorkiness of the cops was played so well off their utter crookedness.

I loved the line "you'll meet her"

I think it really captured that teenage feeling of over-intense drama - like the bottle of Gold Schlager being the most important item in the world - getting alcohol that night being the most important thing in the world that would make or break their future - the weight of every little comment exchanged between boys and girls.

I second kenan's remark about the great combination of awkwardness and self-possession. They were all so sure of themselves in an interesting way.

THIS FILM

Just got offed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

and guys the sideplot was PERFECT. the whole point of a sideplot, going back to the likes of ben jonson, is to provide a lighter, wackier, not quite so 'deep' or moving but equally funny take on the main storyline, occasionally intersecting with it but remaining largely independent. i believe shakespeare had a thing for comedy constables.

michael cera is probably one of the 5 best comic actors in the world and he's younger than me for goodness' sake. and he's so so so lovable! the other dude had believable charm; not every line worked, but the ones that mattered did.

the wish-fulfilment ending is no less than the protagonists deserved. those girls were both hot and realistic. nothing was TOO far-fetched. nothing was (particularly) overplayed. it wasn't 'the making of a legend' (see: Road Trip, American Pie etc), it was the exploration of friendship.

srsly, one of the great bildungsroman movies.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

I think the tiananmen square dick was the one that got me

Totally

The cops were faintly intimidating as well as being funny, a bunch of people in the cinema audibly gasped in sympathy when Jesse got his skull cracked with a nightstick at the end. There wasn't much Evil Jock presence at all after the spitting incident at the start so it was kind of excessive in terms of karma.

Also: Evan being ordered to pay attention to the football game and listlessly muttering "uh...kick it towards me" or something

I thought it was very funny but the thing I didn't get was that the guys in the movie were supposed to be 18 but they acted like 14-15 year olds in the way they approach/think/talk about sex.

Lovelace, Monday, 12 November 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

a lot of 18 year olds act like 14-15 year olds in the way the approach/think/talk about sex.

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 November 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 12 November 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I know, but it still bugged me for some reason. not in a major way, but it's just not the way people I know used to act when we were in that age(not long ago btw). it might be a cultural thing too...

Lovelace, Monday, 12 November 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

the two opposing viewpoints or approaces projected— one guy who will do anything for sex, will have sex with anyone, is fearless in his quest to lose his virginity and the other guy who also wants to lose his virginity but wants to do it w/ the right girl and when she's ready— really just work well for that type of movie. it distinguishes the two characters pretty blatantly— and since those two groups (or ideals) are pretty abstract, it gives the audience a choice as to which character they want to identify with— and it also puts a natural tension into a relationship (best friends) that by nature shouldn't be very tense.

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 November 2007 09:39 (eighteen years ago)

That holywood reporter review is so completely out of the ballpark. I have trouble buying that it's just a movie about "underage kids itching to get booze and have sex" when the Seth character keeps going on about how hooking up is part of some bizarre plan to get him ready to become some sort of experienced guy by the time he gets to college and Evan is all apprehensive and social.

How do you square yourselves with the sexism... just ignore it?

czn, Friday, 29 February 2008 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

is it sexist?

i think the "perioded on my leg" scene is less sexist if you grok that it's carla gallo.

plus, i'm not sure how a 17-year-old loudmouth dude in a comedy is meant to react to what happens there that could make it un-sexist.

obv you could not have it happen at all -- or just be like a more serious director like PTA or the coens and not have any women in yr film.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Friday, 29 February 2008 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

My sexism radar is totally proxy: I lolled like a drain at this and enjoyed it but... my girlfriend (who did watch it to the end to her credit) was less enamoured. I'm not exactly sure why but my hunch is that it was due to the sexism and - probably to a larger extent - the crudity, which I have a larger tolerance for.

I don't want to get all dictionary.com on definitions of sexism but even to me - not tuned to picking it up - most of it did seem pretty out there.

Carla Gallo is... a relation of Vincent.semen.co.uk.Gallo?

i don't think so. but she was in 'undeclared' so the scene feels more like a "star cameo" than it would if played by a random hottie in 'van wilder: party liaison'.

it's definitely crude, especially the first 10 mins, but i'm not usually into crudeness tbh. a lot of girls i know wouldn't have liked it. i thought the two female characters in it were strong though.

No, she's an "Undeclared" alum (which she was awesome in; and she was one of the carny strippers in "Carnivale." And she was the kid with a crush on Daniel Faraday in "Spanking the Monkey")... (x-post)

I love all of the scenes of Michael Cera losing his cool and cracking up at Jonah Hill's ad-libs on the "Superbad" DVD. The one where Hill starts talking about Evan's mom's 'Hershey Kiss Nips' is particularly hilarious... his eyes going wide as he loses it are classic.

wow i loved it, i knew i would and i did. cuts to the heart of some things without ever dragging, everybody's timing is killer, soundtrack is great. the cop stuff was kinda just, off-putting after a while though it was reasonably funny.

I didn't think it was sexist.

Watched this on Sunday night for the first time since seeing it in the cinema; thoroughly enjoyed it once again. My girlfriend also adores it, so I'm not buying the sexism angle.

The cop stuff was less credulity testing second time around. The opening dialogue re; porn sites was more annoying, though.

it got distracting, i think is what i meant about the cop stuff. a small thing really.

get it right in utah (tremendoid), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 08:34 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe "sexist" is going a bit far, but they treated all the female characters in this movie like shit.

I know, I know... they wrote it when they were teenagers, blah blah blah. Would it have killed them to have developed at least one female character worth caring about?

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

Like every Judd Apatow related thing I've seen I thought it was amiable and enjoyable, but not all that funny.

chap, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

they treated all the female characters in this movie like shit

I think they (being the two or three main characters) treated all the female characters with complete incomprehension. Which I think was the idea. I did not come away thinking that even the Jonah character was going to grow up to treat women shitty. Seriously, the first time he gets into any kind of relationship whatsoever with a real-life female, the first thing he's going to have is shock, with awe following close behind. He needs a few smacks upside his head, but he'll get 'em, and turn out ok. And anyway the movie is not about the girls, it's about the guys. One of the main points of the movie is how guy-centric their whole world is, how each-other-centric, how goddamn GAY they really are for each other. And you know, that's what it's like when you're a dork in high school, and you have one best friend, and both of you are still scared of girls. It's okay in this movie that the girls are the other. It only makes sense.

crusty but benign (kenan), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

And also the movie didn't treat them like shit even if (and it's a big if) the characters do.

i didn' think this movie was sexist, and i laughed a ton, especially at the period scene!

cameron carr, Thursday, 9 October 2008 07:58 (seventeen years ago)

The characters don't treat women like shit; they talk about women in objectifying terms TO EACH OTHER, but when actually confronted with women at any stage of real events, they either collapse (the headbutt) or become chivalrous (the non-event seduction). There are no fully-developed female characters in the film because a; there are very few fully-developed characters AT ALL, and b; the movie is, bar cop sub-plot, exclusively about Seth & Evan, neither of whom are girls.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 9 October 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that. They're they're not full developed characters by adult standards because part of the character is that there is not a fully developed adult personality behind it. The cops are funny like that. They're kids, too, but they have no excuse.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, this is key and one of this movie's biggest strengths over other movies about teenage boys; it acknowledges that even the sensitive nerdy guys that aren't getting any still obsess over sex and say disgusting shit about girls to each other.

The DVD version of this was so superior to the screen version. Weirdly, it seems they cut out a lot of character development (i.e., Jules and Seth's early Home Ec patter), but left the raunch mostly intact for the theater release. That says a lot about demographic targeting these days.

Also - the DVD commentary where Greg Mottola brings his TEN-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER to the studio, and then makes Jonah Hill and the others censor themselves for her sake is extra hilarity. Jonah HIll is just fuming in his seat for half of it and then just starts going off w/ double barrels of curses, and Mottola get's pissed and storms out the door in the middle of the film, daughter in tow, leaving the cast to talk sh!t about him behind his back for the remainder.

My wife and I saw this for the first time this weekend and both of us thought it was way way way WAY better than "Knocked Up".

Yes, it took me a while to see Superbad, and having seen Knocked Up again since (and then watching Superbad like four more times) I think SB holds up a lot better.

otm in new york (G00blar), Monday, 30 March 2009 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

It helps that the ancillary characters in "Superbad" aren't wholly repellent douches.

The cops in "Superbad" were much less repellent than Seth Rogan's friends and Katherine Heigl's family in "Knocked Up".

BADGES DON'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO WALTZ OFF WITH A BABY (HI DERE), Monday, 30 March 2009 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann are the best part of Knocked Up, who cares if their characters would be 'repellent' as IRL people

s1ocki, Monday, 30 March 2009 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha

I liked "Knocked Up" (and I thought Rudd/Mann were much funnier than Rogan's friends) but I spent much more of the movie wanting to throttle the supporting cast than I did laughing at them. I think the extra laye of unrealistic ridiculousness in the cops' behavior helped me handwave their toolishness in support of the comedy rather than working against it.

the worst breed of fong (some dude), Monday, 30 March 2009 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

(I am willing to concede on a rational level that the "tooliness" I'm very mildly complaining about in "Knocked Up" also exists in "Superbad, but due to the setting it makes more sense and didn't get in the way of me enjoying the movie.)

who the fuck remembers the second most prominent character in a movie, you fucking nerds?

srsly morbz, the Paul Rudd freaking out on mushrooms in Vegas scene and Paul Rudd sneaking out to play fantasy football/gridiron thing are written as much more significant parts of the movie (esp for what they signify to Rogen's "character journey") than anything involving Heigl. except maybe Heigl at work, that was good and actually about her, rather than her reacting to/affecting Rogen.

I had a dream once that I was staying at friends' house in LA and we were hanging/partying out with Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzmann but something went wrong and Jonah died of a heart attack and we were all freaked out and didn't want anybody to know he had died or we would get blamed for it so we threw his body in the bathtub with a bunch of ice, which then froze over so he looked like frozen Han Solo in Empire and then we had to keep all the other party guests out of the bathroom lest they discover that we had accidentally murdered Jonah Hill. I forget how it ended.
