Haha, sorry; I've been a touch ill and my camera is still with someone else. Once term's over I plan on editing the footage together.
One interesting development is his habit of getting shit on his hind legs, which he's started doing a lot in the past two weeks. Yesterday evening Emma figured that it only happened when it was dark where his litter tray is (on the upstairs landing), whether it was 7pm or 2am when he went for a poo. So we slept with the landing light on last night. Well, I say slept; Bob was insanely affectionate all night and I basically had a little white purring engine next to my head. I still have this sodding cold and the result was fuck all sleep. BUT he went to the loo twice and didn't get poo on himself.
Conclusion?
Bob is scared of the dark.

So Bob spent his first weekend without us! We were staying with friends in Gloucester so took him to my mum and dad's house. He liked the train set and playing football in the livingroom and looking out of the window at birds, but he missed us and my mum and dad didn't really get any cuddles. We got LOTS of cuddles when we picked him up at 3pm yesterday.

So, after one helluva weekend after which our Cute Kitten morphed into a Killer Kat (2 birds, several mice, a couple of voles - to list the ones we knew of from Fiday evening to Monday morning) i got a collar with big'old warning bell. 3 weeks later, i have had to buy 4 of the fuckers as the Killer Kat climbs through the hedge and the collar auto-releases to stop the Killer Kat from being Killed. I am beginning to wonder if i should just get one of the old school collars and Run The Risk. I will be bankrupt by Krimbo.

We've had to move the kitten bowl up onto the counter, as the dog figured out how to get into the kitten tent and eat all Pickle's food. Pickle really seems to like dog food, I don't understand that... he's always at the dog's dish. I will have more cuteness later, we got Pickle and the dog almost cuddling!

be careful with the dog food thing. we lost a kitten when she came up between the eating dog's legs and the dog got spooked and snapped her in half :-\ the dog was a real sweetie all her life but just got scared at the wrong time.

The place he came from is mad because it's a small-holding with pygmy goats, sheep, three miniature rough collies, and about eleven ragdolls plus kittens. That ragdoll tunnel thing is their access from the house to their own wire-fenced paddock - it goes over the carport into this large area that's planted with cat-friendly plants, a small pond, various bits of ceramic tube for them to run through, and lots of toys. It's like Disneyland for kittens. We came out of the house on the way home and a stream of massive ragdolls came with us via the tunnel! mental. Sadly I didn't take more pictures of it. I will when we go back in three weeks though to visit Cosmo and get to know him better.

she is sooooo cute and black and fluffy (but currently skinny and fur is all matted :( will fix her up when she gets stronger) - was either abandoned or lost or i don't know, but the friend who has been taking care of her (but can't keep her b/c like the scheff (haha) she already has two cats) took her to the vet and kitty has been declawed, fixed, has no diseases, has had shots, etc.

They are domestic tortoiseshells, one long haired, one short.
They were found, filthy and cold on a patch of waste ground adjoining someone's garden, luckily that someone has a history of looking after foundlings so he took them in.
When word filtered through that my g/f and I were looking for some kitty action we hooked up.
They were 6 months when we got them happy, healthy, loving and well balanced, our vet told me that traditionally female tortys are wilfull little buggers and they most certainly are.

How do you prepare Bob for the arrival of another cat? Has he seen other cats yet? (If he's never seen one he may think he's human and treat Cosmo like another species - or is that just dogs?)

He hasn't seen another cat since he was three months old, but he's very aware of the smell of other cats, as whenever we go and see parents we come back reeking of their cats and he gets very "oooh, what's this, *sniff sniff*" at us. Cosmo's breeder recommends an exchange of blankets a week or so before we get Cosmo, so Bobn can get used to Cosmo's smell and vice versa.

All cats do. I really wonder what that's about. I used to get lazy after doing laundry and get all "Oh fuck sorting the socks" and dump them in a big Macy's shopping bag, but then my cat would see that as OMG BAG + PEOPLE CLOTHES = AWESOME and would climb into the bag and power-shed, and then I just had to wash the socks again. Cosmo and Bob are both officially cats now, as Cosmo turned 1 just over a month ago. Bob will be two (2!) in early August.
I have some awful news on the kitten front, though. A work colleague arranged to get two ragdoll kittens; one arrived two weeks ago and the other was due around now, but after a couple of vet trips they suspect the first has feline infectious peritonitis, which is almost always fatal. He's only 14 weeks old. I'm almost crying typing this. It's awful.

sad cat story from our downstairs neighbors that I received yesterday (tl;dr version: be very, very wary of Metacam):
Tito had a rabies vaccination 3 weeks ago. This was because the vet to whom we brought him insisted it was state law that he had to have it, even though he was a completely indoor cat, and we were bringing him there to check out his mouth (we had seen blood traces in the waterbowl). As a result of what we believe was a botched shot into his rear leg muscle, Tito started limping, and favoring that leg a few days later. We brought him to another vet (we weren't going to go back to the original, for sure) who, after a thorough checkup, prescribed .3 ml/kg of Metacam every other day for 3 treatments, as well as giving him a benadryl shot. After 2 treatments, his limp got worse, and we brought him back. A different vet in the same practice, upped the Metacam to .5 ml/kg evry day for 5 days. He did however, perform bloodwork before making this prescription, and Tito's kidney numbers were all fine, so we went ahead. At the first dose, Tito fought like hell to not take it. We figured it was because cats always struggle when you give them oral medication, so we went ahead. When it came time for the next dose, Tito fought hard again, but we persisted. You can just imagine the incredible guilt my wife and I have now, looking back at his reaction-it is incredibly wrenching to feel you have assisted in killing your pet, all because your intentions were good. If only we had it back to do (or NOT do) again.....Later that night, Tito threw up yellow bile, and stopped eating and drinking, and became withdrawn, obviously feeling poorly. As this didn't improve the next day, we brought him back to the vet. This time, his kidney numbers were off the chart. We were shocked, stunned. Even though the vet had warned us that Metacam did have renal failure as a possible "side effect", we were assured that this happened maybe once in 10,000 cats- and certainly not at the dosage level we were at. The vet said he had never personally seen it happen. Unfortunately for Tito and us, he cannot make that claim anymore. We immediately took Tito to an animal hospital, where they immediately started diuresis. He did not respond overnight, so they catheterized him and put a stent into his jugular, so they could begin an IV drip. This was basically the last-ditch effort at saving Tito- at this point, even though we desperately wanted him to live, we were getting torn by the feeling that he was needlessly suffering, and scared without us there. They also gave him a diuretic- still, he did not respond. His kidneys were shutting down, and he could not make any urine- and now the fluid had nowhere to go. We were in constant contact with the hospital as these decisions were made. When we got the call this morning that we should get there as soon as possible to say goodbye, our last hope was gone, and now we just wanted to have his suffering cease. At 7:30 this morning, just 38 hours after we brought him to the hospital, our loving little boy, just over 6 years old, was gone- way,way,way before his time. Could there have been underlying health factors we were unaware of, that contributed to hid kidney failure? Yes- but the cause and effect of the "safe" dose of Metacam, in our minds(and of the vet that prescribed the second, larger daily dose) is undeniable. This vet is also disconsolate over Tito's death- when we called him today to tell him what happened, he was audibly shaken. I am sure he will never look at Metacam the same way again. Even though we know we were doing what we thought was best to help heal Tito, we are haunted by the memory of his violent reaction to taking the Metacam after the first couple of low doses- my God, if only we had paid closer attention to him, maybe we would still have him in our lives. I know we will eventually stop beating ourselves up- but it will take a while. Meanwhile, we will spread the word about Metacam to all our friends who have pets. Thanks for letting me share my story.

My colleague's kitten doesn't have FIP, but almost certainly does have something wrong with his liver. He'll almost certainly be put to sleep tomorrow. It's been an awful few days for my colleague. And that poor kitten.

There is a new crop of basement kittens! Our neighbor trapped the mom and is getting her spayed but in the meantime we get to have fun with kittens while we work to home them.

I don't know where else to post this so here I'm going to share with y'all the cutest thing I've personally witnessed a kitty do. Sleeping on the backrest of the couch where I was sitting, she woke up, inched forward a couple inches on her kitty belly and elbows, rested her chin on my shoulder, and went back to sleep.
It didn't last long though, I was paralyzed like this for like five minutes before I coughed and woke her up and she wandered to the back window to look at birds, or whatever cat thing it is she wandered off and did.

Tonight we drove to College Station to pick up our new kitten. She's not the worried faced kitten the photos captured her as. She's playful, spunky, and possibly the most adorable kitten I have seen. She's tiny, barely weighting 2 pounds, and her fur is like a rabbit's. She's a Chocolate Tuxedo Mitted, Ragdoll. She has white socks and two tiny white specks on her mostly black nose and she's mostly brownish black with white through out her fur. Walking into the breeders house and being greeted by 4 adult Ragdoll cats was fun too. We met Lizzy's mother and father, who were both gorgeous cat's with huge fluffy fur and the sweetest temperament. Just meeting a 'Cat Breeder' was an experience and hearing him talk about his cats. I couldn't tell how many cats he had in his house, but he had many rooms devoted to different litters and adults. I'm very excited about having a new ragdoll kitten since I lost Lilly last year. I'll take a few photos of her soon and post them here.

We took her outside for the first time today, and she seems to love running. But she hasn't quite figured out how to run correctly. She sort of hops and eventually her back legs swing around and she sideways. It's adorable, but she almost wipes out on herself.

Mm, I guess so. And I wouldn't want to say it would *never* work, but cats are generally territorial animals, plus they don't much like being forced to go anywhere or do anything - they're autonomous and wilful creatures, and that's why we love them. That and their adorable flufflesomeness.

I wake most mornings to hissing and yowling outside my window as Patrol Xat (the one that likes taunting the dogs through the windows and sleeping on my Miata's roof hammock) enters the territory of Emplacement Cat. Two years, and they haven't come to any sort of accommodation. There's sort of a DMZ that runs just on the other side of the fence, so that's where they have their fruitless negotiations.
When I had 2 yr old kittens and moved into a house with a 6 yr old cat, they didn't speak to each other at all for the year.

I'm guesing you mean hyper and hypo? Hyperthyroidism is super common in cats; my dearly departed kitty lived with it just fine to the ripe old age of 19, but it is something you have to control very carefully (kind of like high blood pressure, which it can cause, which in turn is hell on the kidneys and other organs).

I can't name her! It would be all over then. But, I found her the day before my Grandfather died so if I did, she'd probably be named Frankie. I found my bird the day my Grandmother Eleanor had a stroke (which led to her eventual passing) and named him Eleanor Rigby in her honour. I have this gift, this animal spirit world is protecting me, I am not a 'signs'/'faith' kinda person but two free therapy animals in a row has me feeling spooky. Even my husband loves her dearly. But his allergies flare up immediately. :(

That's beautiful FFM :) We took care of a stray kitten once. We called him Beckett. We couldn't keep him, for he did NOT get along with our others cats, so had to find a good place for it. But I am glad we gave it a name when he was with us, as I can still think back on that silly vibrant Beckett. He went to a great new place and got a new name, which is all good. But to me he will always be Beckett.

Awww, happy birthday Bob! The neighbourhood is not overrun with kittens on a day to day basis, but you can bet if there is a sweet little stray on the street that I will somehow find it. I assume Bleeding Hearts is spraypainted on our sidewalk in ink I cannot see, because I find it amazing otherwise that this little kitten was left in front of my home (middle of the street)!
Good news: my social media push seems to work and a woman who works at a vet clinic is interested in meeting her tomorrow and bringing her home to meet her two adult male neutered kitties! Hallelujah - I am so happy to see her go to the kitty-friendly home she deserves. Heartbroken that I won't get to play with her much more, but I have been promised photos (which will go straight to this thread!)

the thyroid medication has made a big difference with her energy level and general happiness though.
She's quite the unique cat; the vet ran all these tests on her (free of charge) and sent off the results to a doctor at UPenn who is researching congenital hypothyroidism in cats.

Took me back to when I lost my kitty (the real Quincie) after 15 years together. I was also at an airport, returning to DC from Amsterdam, when I got the news. She held on until we made it home and rushed her to the vet to end the suffering. I'm tearing up now thinking about it. So, I wanted to propose a name, and I thought that kitten looked really noble, like, on the first picture she definitely has posture, and the white fluff on her breast looks like the top of a Russian fur coat. So I would have named her after my favorite female character from Tolstoy, but that is Kitty, so that kind of does not work.

i don't necessarily want frances to listen. sometimes, though, it would be good if when i took her off my lap she ran somewhere else instead of jumping right back in. and then, if i walked away, if she didn't cling onto my legs with her claws and try to shimmy up like i am a tree.

kitties gotta hydrate because they'd normally get most of their water from their prey and consequently haven't got the urge to drink as much as they need. wet food + many dishes of fresh water throughout yr space can help, and maybe a fountain
if food & water are kept next to each other the water will get gnarly little chunks of food in it
a plastic food dish can cause chin acne
it's best to have a food dish with low sides, like a plate or saucer, to avoid whisker fatigue
research any houseplants to make sure they aren't toxic because they gonna get chewed
get her used to having her paws and mouth fiddled with (lots of praise, affection, & treats) so it's easier later on when you trim her claws/give her meds
same with car trips and her carrier, if she only associates them with the vet they'll be a source of dread. take her out for little drives and make them fun for her
careful of her cuticles when trimming her claws, and you won't need to trim the back claws unless they're catching on things
get her used to being brushed
have plenty of (easy to clean) rugs or carpet so she can dash around without slipping on smooth floors, and i'd recommend patterns instead of solid colors since they tend to be better at hiding the stains of accidents past
teach her to come when you call: choose a cue (her name in a particular pitch, a short series of whistled notes, a set of finger snaps or whatever -- something recognizable to a critter with no use for spoken language) and make her associate that cue with everything good in the world, like treats and catnip (when she's old enough for catnip, and if she's sensitive to it). keep reinforcing the link between her cue and the things she loves in perpetuity
take care of her dental health, veterinary dentistry is expensive as balls
if she brings you dead things, praise her! cats cannot conceive of hunting as a thing they should not do. if she gets scolded for hunting and gets her prize taken away, she'll think there must be a famine on and try to catch more
give her lots of private little bolt holes where she can hide and feel safe (but which you can access if needed)
vertical spaces are important, too, because she is very short and on the floor everything looms around her like skyscrapers and it can be intimidating sometimes. tall cat trees, wall shelves, furniture arranged in graduating heights are all good
breakaway collar so she doesn't accidentally choke herself (cats have soft throats compared to dogs)
always speak kindly to her
be careful where you step!
and finally,
if you have the space/resources/inclination, maybe consider getting another kitten for her to play with so she's not 100% focused on you and won't be lonesome when you're away
or you know whatever. as long as you love her she's gonna have a grand life!!!!!

We have a long-haired cat who loves to be combed, too. I keep the comb in a tin on the coffee table (because otherwise the dogs eat it), and a couple of times a week she will present herself to be combed (especially if she's made a mat on her neck by scratching under her ear). She lies along my chest with her face near my face, and I comb her all over. It's so soothing.
