ILX Online Poker Tournament!!

So guys - shall we do an ILX poker tourney? I have created a private tournament at Pokerstars (the biggest online poker site, with the best facilities, so even if you don't have an account there there's nothing to be lost setting one up). We could have a $5.50 game so it's cheap enough for all levels of player to enter, but if there's a couple of dozen of us 1st prize would still be worth winning. Even if there's fewer it would still be rad.

I have been through the poker thread and noted all the contributors past and present, so the idea, as well as this thread, is to (web)mail everyone and hopefully get a positive response from enough people to make it worthwhile.

I have gone for SUNDAY 4TH NOVEMBER at 9pm GMT (4pm EST) - obviously the date's a little arbitrary but I hope it's not too inconvenient a time for anyone.

So - please register your interest, ask questions etc - and if you need any help setting up an account or depositing money, say so and we'll see what we can do.

If you are ready to register, go to Tourney -> Private -> ILX Poker Showdown, tournament #65438090.

jhøshea, Sunday, 28 October 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

Mark C, Sunday, 28 October 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Bump?

Mark C, Monday, 29 October 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

No Mac version.

caek, Monday, 29 October 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

same with me on the mac front. i could do full tilt.

YGS, Monday, 29 October 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe we need a separate Mac-only tournament?

I don't actually know if I have the privileges to set up a tournament at Full Tilt - I'll look into it though.

Mark C, Monday, 29 October 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

lol i'll play prolly.

should be around....

need to sign up though.

ken c, Monday, 29 October 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

would play, buy also on a mac.

J0rdan S., Monday, 29 October 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

Does everyone have a mac or are the PC users just not reading the thread?

Mark C, Monday, 29 October 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

don't macs have a PC emulator on it?

ken c, Monday, 29 October 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

I assume the mac users who've posted don't have the necessary equipment?

Mark C, Monday, 29 October 2007 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ok I'll do it just for yuks. Date and time should be no problemo.

ledge, Monday, 29 October 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

i would definitely play but can't guarantee i'll be in a location with internet access on sunday evening. would feel like a bit of a twat going to the pub to do it.

Upt0eleven, Monday, 29 October 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Hi guys,

I've emailed Full Tilt and I can indeed set up a tourney there - it's not as straightforward as Stars, and requires 4 days grace so this Sunday is out, but perhaps in a couple of weeks?

So if we provisionally say 9pm GMT/4pm ET on Sunday 11th November, who's able to participate?

I'll also post details for people who aren't yet signed up to Full Tilt so that they can get rakeback on their accounts (this is free, easy and totally worth doing if there's any chance you'll continue to play at the site). If anyone wants more info or anything, just email me via ILX.

(btw if anyone IS on for this sunday's tourney, we can still play it - again, let me know. Tom, even if it's just you and me it could be fun!!)

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

cue 9/11 NEVAR FORGET gags

i'd still be up for this sun.

ledge, Friday, 2 November 2007 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

smashing - can we get a few more punters?

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

11/11 is Remembrance Sunday in the UK. Good times. That date and time for me, assuming I figure the Mac/software/account stuff out in time.

caek, Friday, 2 November 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

Just installed the Full Tilt client and set up an account. Seemed to go OK, despite using a weird Windows-y installer. I have no idea how to play poker online though, so Sunday week could be interesting.

caek, Friday, 2 November 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

I think I can do this on the 11th if it's FTP and not Stars (Mac user here as well; I have a Sunday home game at 7 EST, but I can show up late.) Buy-in's still going to be $5+.50?

govern yourself accordingly, Friday, 2 November 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

Caek you got a rakeback deal right...

Yeah, the idea is $5.50 on FT for the 11th (and we're also going to have a go (PC users only ;_;) this sunday on Stars, as originally planned)

If this works out maybe it could become a semi-regular thing?

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah 11/11 not 9/11. duh. i will sign up for FT. Think I signed up for stars already...

ledge, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

hello i don't know whether GNER trains have Wifi, if they do i'm definitely doing it. way to break the boredom of a 5 hour train journey.

ken c, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

APPARENTLY SO. okay this will cost £10 but i guess I JUST HAVE TO MAKE SURE I WIN

ken c, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

Mark C will have all your monies.

Ed, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

Tom before you sign up for FT, go to raketherake.com and sign up through them. In fact, anyone who needs to sign up, do so - this means you'll get 27% rakeback on all hands you play at FT in the future (and you can only do it before you sign up).

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

yeah awes im in !

jhøshea, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Woohoo!

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Caek you got a rakeback deal right..."

I have no idea what any of the nouns in that sentence mean. I am particularly interesting in the meaning of "rakeback". Could you elaborate?

caek, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

hey mark do you control the tourney set up? lets make it a ds for more lolz!

jhøshea, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

what's a ds?

ken c, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Double shootout? I dunno, I think a simple freezeout would be about right for the first go :)

Caek - when you play poker online (and indeed live), the house takes a proportion of each pot played - this is called rake. Although it's small - 3-5% - in the world of poker, where the margins are everything, it can make a substantial difference to your profitability.

Rakeback is a scheme offered by affiliates - people/companies who have a deal with the poker sites to bring in new players, and are rewarded for doing so. As an incentive to new players, these affiliates can sometimes offer rakeback - i.e. a set proportion of the rake you pay is returned to you. Full Tilt affiliates offer 27% rakeback - so if, in a month, say, you pay $500 in rake, you would receive a payment of $108 at the end of the month from your rakeback provider.

You may think $500 in rake is a lot, but it really adds up - I play about 30-40 hours online poker a month, at low stakes, and I reckon I pay on average about $600 for the privilege. The beauty of poker, of course, is that a good player will make up that amount, and more, in the profit they make at the table.

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Caek - the problem is, once you've signed up for site like Full Tilt, you lose the opportunity to get a rakeback deal - logically, because you found your own way to the site, so they're not going to pay an affiliate for bringing you to them.

On the plus side, there are lots of other sites that offer rakeback, so if you get to the point where you are playing online regularly and rakeback would be a not inconsiderable benefit, you can always move to one of these other sites ensuring that you do sign up through an affiliate.

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

double stack double stack! little more room to breath play around see some cards try some stuff etc.

jhøshea, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Ahh! I dunno if that's an option for private tourneys and also, it gives a distinct advantage to the stronger player so when we're starting off with presumably some less confident players taking part, we want to make it as fair as possible.

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

yeah maybe but everyone get to play longer too - eh either way is fine w/me tho

jhøshea, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

i think double stack actually suits less experienced players

ken c, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, unless you blow out all-in on the first hand. having more chips to play with = more tolerating for mistakes?

ken c, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Thing is with blinds big relative to stacks it's harder to make mistakes or play badly because going all in is more likely to happen and it tends to be a real leveller between good and bad players.

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

That was really badly put.

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Just a reminder - anyone who fancies playing this weekend and has a PC (or a dual boot Mac), see the first post in the thread for details of a game at 4pm ET/9pm GMT on Sunday. Email me if you want further info.

Mark C, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

$180 up tonight! Bring it on chaps!

Mark C, Saturday, 3 November 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

Can't seem to connect at the moment...

ledge, Sunday, 4 November 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm it seems fine for me. This is Pokerstars you're at, right?

Who else is up for this? Even if it's just a few of us it might be a nice hors d'oeuvre before next weekend's showdown :)

(see 1st post in thread for details of how to play)

Oops - forgot to say! Password is raggett

Mark C, Sunday, 4 November 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

pokerstars, yup. just hangs on the 'connecting' box, although the network status button says everything's ok.

MY new power supply has gone kaput so I had to plug the old one back in just to get this far.

And now my digicam won't let me transfer the photos off it.

ledge, Sunday, 4 November 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Camera problem due to shitty usb connection. Pokerstars still not happy.

ledge, Sunday, 4 November 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Fixed, apparently it was 'cause my sys clock had been reset and thought it was jan 2005?!

ledge, Sunday, 4 November 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

Haha! Have you signed up Tom? It could just be me and you but if so then we can use it as a tuition session if you like :)

Come on lads - 3 and a half hours till F!U!N!

Mark C, Sunday, 4 November 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Ah haf signed up yes.

ledge, Sunday, 4 November 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

Bump - 2 hours to go!

Mark C, Sunday, 4 November 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Tom, fire up AIM!

Mark C, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

Mark C, Sunday, 4 November 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

ken c, Sunday, 4 November 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

oh ken

ledge, Sunday, 4 November 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

so who won?

Upt0eleven, Monday, 5 November 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)

Cancelled due to lack of interest, only MarkC and I showed! So I played a mini SnG tourney with Mark watching and makin ma plays for me and came fourth. Then played another on my own and won, all of $4.50 :)

ledge, Monday, 5 November 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

Next week though! Be there!

ledge, Monday, 5 November 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

is this the full tilt one? i wanna play but at the moment i'm in brighton at weekends in my house lacking internet access. i may be inclined to come up to london on sunday night though. and when i finally move out of my house i'll be able to play whenever.

i played a 50 player SnG last week and also came 4th. Would have probably done better but my attention span was on the wane so I started making stupid plays that cost me 12,000 chips in the space of about 3 hands.

Upt0eleven, Monday, 5 November 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, next Sunday is the Full Tilt one. I need to email all the ILXors I know play but maybe aren't reading this thread/ILE right now.

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

I had a go at Full Tilt for an hour last night. Up $20. Good times.

How much of a pain is it to actually withdraw money?

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

You're not American, are you? In which case, not much of a pain at all. If you're going to play often I'd advise you set up an account with Neteller - it takes a couple of weeks to get everything finalised but once you have it makes transferring money a doddle.

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

No, I'm in the UK. I'm not going to play often, but I don't particularly want to leave $70 in there gathering dust.

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks, by the way!

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

can they transfer the money back to your credit card or smething? (i have no idea as i have never been in a position where i have enough money that's worth moving back)

ken c, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, if you deposited on a credit card they will transfer the money back onto it. Indeed even if you want it transferred elsewhere, I believe they are obliged to put a certain amount on the card first (maybe up to the level you deposited?).

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

Caek - do you know about bankroll management? It's to do with the amount of money you need to have behind you to play at certain stakes in order to render negligible the possibility of going busto. I'll explain in more detail if anyone's interested.

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

basically if you have $70, go all-in so that you'll end up with $140, then $280, etc.

ken c, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

i'm no good at cash games

ken c, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just playing 10c blinds at the moment, so I don't think bankroll management is really an issue ; )

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Haha - actually it is, technically, if your roll is $70. But I'd imagine you could probably stick another $50 in if you did lose it all - should you want to - so no, it's probably not.

(the rule of thumb at low limits is you want to have 20x the buyin if you're playing cash games, so 10c blinds = $10 buyin, so theoretically you need a roll of $200)

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

I just wasted the morning on Full Tilt. I hate you, Mark ; )

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

I should stick to my friendly, seriously drunken game with friends on Thursday nights.

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

But I won't.

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

"Wasted"?? So you lost, huh :)

Do you ever play in the evenings? If you want to AIM/MSN while doing so I'd be up for that.

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I think I finished the morning about even. I've moved up to the 0.25/0.10 tables, which are more fun. By "wasted" I mean I didn't make any progress with my PhD, but I can't remember the last time I did something constructive on a Monday morning, tbh. Something like 1998.

I might try a tournament before Sunday, but I have to figure them out first. Any tips I can't get from reading the help pages on the website?

I think I'm going to try and stick to playing for half an hour or so after everyone's gone to bed (UK time) so I don't get too into it.

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

Check out this thread at flopturnriver.com before you start playing tournaments - they are a different discipline to cash games, for sure.

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

The jargon in that post is melting my face. It will take a while to figure it out.

caek, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Feel free to ask for explanations!

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

No? Ah well :)

Caek, sometime I am on Full Tilt late at night - say hi if you're around.

Mark C, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

ARE YOU PLAYING, CAEK?

I played earlier and won $34. Just like last night, I was down over a buyin before 2 decent hands at the end.

Mark C, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

I am on for another half hour or so

caek, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

I was in bed by half one - how did you do?

Mark C, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

Came third in a 9-person sit and go and then came 5th in an 18-person. I was in the lead by a _long_ way in the 18-person for most of the time, but I screwed up at the end. I'm sure my early lead was meaningless. The game seems to completely change as the blinds go up and the number of players go down.

caek, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

Yup, very true. In the end game it's basically all about when to push and when, very occasionally, to call a push - there's no post-flop poker at all beyond a certain point which makes the game more straightforward and rewards aggression, even if the early part of the game is pretty much the opposite. If you get the balance right, you can pretty much guarantee you'll be a winning player in low-mid stakes.

The 18-man tourneys pay top 4, don't they. That sucks a bit :(

Mark C, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I emailed Full Tilt with the details of this Sunday's tourney so we should be good to go! $5.50 buyin, 4pm ET, 9pm GMT, password is nabisco, and once the tourney is listed on their software I'll let everyone know.

Mark C, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, that was quick:

I have created your private nl hold'em tournament as you requested and it is open for registration at this time.

In order to locate your tournament, click the "Private" tab in the tournament lobby.

Tournament #31119312 (Sunday 11/11/07 16:00ET) password: nabisco

Can we have another quick roll call (which will also serve to keep this thread bumped)?

Mark C, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

yah me here !

jhøshea, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

ledge, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

That's more in 4 mins than we managed for the last one :)

Mark C, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Hey guys you have to do another one of these in the near future. Once I start getting paid again, I will be up for this.

G00blar, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in.

caek, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

ILX Poker Tournament in your time zone:

http://timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=11&month=11&year=2007&hour=16&min=0&sec=0&p1=179

caek, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

so 9pm in UK? sounds good, i should have ample time to knock all of you out before i get off the train at around midnight.

ken c, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Gooblar, you have super-secret ILXor webmail!

Mark C, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

woo i hope the wifi will work well enough.. i am seeing loads of potential dropped connections when i have AA :( :(

ken c, Saturday, 10 November 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

That's a relief Ken :) Actually, I'm on a roll - I've outlasted you in the last 3 tourneys we've played together!

EVERYONE SUNDAY NIGHT, 4PM ET/9PM GMT, FULL TILT POKER, BE THERE!

Mark C, Saturday, 10 November 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just going to keep bumping this I think :)

Mark C, Saturday, 10 November 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Seeing as the fulltilt tech support people have yet to get back to me to help me get their software to install on my mac, it doesn't look likely that I can join up. :(

Anyone wanna ysi me an aft.bin file?

G00blar, Saturday, 10 November 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

I know it's a dumb question but you did dl the Mac version of the software, right?

Mark C, Saturday, 10 November 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a minimum deposit on Full Tilt?

nate woolls, Saturday, 10 November 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh it seems $50 might be the minimum. If you don't want to deposit that then let me know your username after you signup and I'll transfer the buyin to you - we can sort out repaying it later.

Mark C, Saturday, 10 November 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm up for a $5.50 game but I really don't want to spend $50. Plus, at the risk of sounding like a pussy, I've got work Monday morning, how long would a tournament like this last?

nate woolls, Saturday, 10 November 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

you can just withdraw the $44.50 afterwards

jhøshea, Saturday, 10 November 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, that's true enough. However, if you are, or intend to be, a regular player, Full Tilt has an excellent deposit bonus of up to $600 which you should consider taking advantage of, because it's only available when you join up.

Mark C, Saturday, 10 November 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Registration is open for this - Full Tilt > Tournaments > Private > 31119312 - please sign up sooner rather than later!

Mark C, Saturday, 10 November 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Alright I'm in!

G00blar, Saturday, 10 November 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

woohoo!

Mark C, Saturday, 10 November 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

I am down $150 tonight so I don't know what I'm so cheery about :)

Mark C, Saturday, 10 November 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

Phew, made it back - finished +$6.95

Mark C, Sunday, 11 November 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

In for tomorrow as DR BALONEY ESQ. Is this going to be winner-take-all?

govern yourself accordingly, Sunday, 11 November 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

I imagine it'll depend on the number of players - if there are 9, top 3 will payout. The prize structure wasn't customisable when I contacted them.

Once again, a reminder to any latecomers: ILX POKER SHOWDOWN, 4pm ET/9pm GMT, Full Tilt Poker (Mac compatible and US-friendly), Tournaments > Private > #31119312

Mark C, Sunday, 11 November 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

And the password is nabisco.

Mark C, Sunday, 11 November 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

I am going to keep bumping this every hour or two - email me if you have any questions.

Mark C, Sunday, 11 November 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

lololo

ken c, Sunday, 11 November 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Mark C, Sunday, 11 November 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

caek, Sunday, 11 November 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yep! Fantastic :)

Six people was a pretty good turnout for a first attempt, too! Thanks very much for sorting it out Mark. Lots of thread bumps went into that. Hopefully there will be another one soon!

caek, Sunday, 11 November 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

In a way, we all won.

I won lots of little hands that kept my head above water then finished 4th as expected. But fun!

G00blar, Sunday, 11 November 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

Same time next week?

G00blar, Sunday, 11 November 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

That's fine with me, but would we get more yankee dollar if we made it an hour later?

caek, Sunday, 11 November 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

perhaps. also fine by me.

G00blar, Sunday, 11 November 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

Fine by me too. Shall I start a new thread, see what people fancy? Also, can people ask their ILXor friends who might be interested and do a wheedling job on them?

Mark C, Sunday, 11 November 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, new rolling thread would be good.

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

sorry i missed it dudes, totally forgot, went to the movies. next time i swear.

jhøshea, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, shall we try and do one this Sunday at 10pm GMT? I am less likely to win then as match of the day 2 is on :)

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

Thinking about it, I guess if people on American time can't play at 4pm they probably can't play at 5 either, and any later we start losing UK players to bed/MOTD2. Unless someone (in the US) specifically prefers 10 GMT then maybe stick to 9?

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

10 or 9 good for me. Probably prefer 9.

ledge, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

I'm cool either way - anyone else have thoughts? Actually I'd probably prefer 9.

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer 10 but I can make either. Just want maximum number of players.

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

Would 9.30 just stupidly over-complicate things?

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

I think unless anyone says they would play at 10, but not at 9, we may as well just keep it at 9.

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

So wait until US daytime posters get done with this thread? Give them another day?

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

Sure thing. They're all on holiday today, though.

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

Assholes.

caek, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

you're going to all get owned next time when i'm not ill and my connection isn't fucked

ken c, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

That's 4 tourneys in a row I've pwned you, Chu.

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still too chickenshit to play for money online. I'll do it every chance I get in person, but I don't like using my credit card for stuff like that.

If anyone wants to play a pussy non-money game on Facebook, you can look me up. My name is Tre B@ker.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

blimey 4 in a row?

ken c, Monday, 12 November 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

I will, Mark, here in a few hours!

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 12 November 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

Ken - I outlasted you at the last Century one, I came 1st and 4th to your 2nd and 5th at Marianna's, and then the ILX tourney on Sunday, where I came first and you came last :)

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'd be okay with keeping it at 9 GMT; good times, and it was a nice warmup for my weekly Sunday night home tourney that starts at 6:30 EST. Speaking of which, here's a hand from last night:

Blinds at 100/200; my stack's about 6,500. I was the chip leader at my table; second stack was about 6,000 and the rest were 2,000-4,000.

I'm dealt A9s on the button. Folds around to me, I raise to 600, SB (about 3,000 chips) and BB (about 6,000) both call. Flop comes down Kh7s2s. SB checks, BB bets 1500, I call, SB folds. Turn card is 9d.

BB pushes all-in for ~4000. At this point I have him covered, but not by a lot; I'm pretty sure I'm looking at KQ or KJ, so I know I'm behind, but an ace/nine/spade will win it for me. 14 outs, in other words. I think about it for a minute and finally fold face-up; he shows KJ. Somebody asks to see the river, so I deal it; it would have been 6s for my nut flush.

So: mathematically, I guess it's a sound call folding there, esp. with my read correct, but would you have chased the 14-outer having bet 1/3 of your stack? In a cash game there'd be no question, but in a tourney I'm inclined to gamble a little. Regardless: I folded, made it to the final table, wound up bubbling on the last hand (pushing with what's left of my stack with 33; losing to J4 when a turned jack hit). I don't feel like I played anything badly all night...

govern yourself accordingly, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

that's quite a loose use of pwn mark!!!

ken c, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

Oh come on Ken, considering our relative success I have to grasp what I can get.

GYA - the difference between cash games and a tourney is the marginal value of your chips. In a cash game, 100 chips is worth the same if you have 1000 as it is if you have 101. In a tourney it's very different - your stack is one of your prime tools, and if you lose it, not only can you not buy back but you can't wield it aggressively, you have no fold equity, and suddenly you have to rely on getting good cards in a short period of time to stay alive.

So, in a tournament, if I am *just* getting odds to make a call, but if I lose (and with 14 outs I'm losing 3/4 of the time) my stack will be crippled, it's an easy fold.

In your example, you are being asked to put 4000 into a 8800 pot. So you need to win 31.25% of the time to break even. 14 outs is 30.4%. So it's a solid fold in a cash game (assuming your read is 100% - in reality you'd have to factor in the possibility it's a bluff, which in this case would make it a call), and I think a pretty easy one in a tourney since the chance of him bluffing aren't worth as much as the marginal value of the chips you could lose.

The other way of looking at it, of course, is that in a game of imperfect knowledge, the expected values of either decision are so close that there's no real wrong or right play, each is as good as the other. But personally, because it's a tourney, I think the fold was good.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Okay - should we assume the Americans aren't going to play, or don't care about the time? I think also we should each try and persuade ILXor chums who we know play the game to participate, even if it means lending them the buyin at first (which I'm happy to do). If we could get, say, 20 people for a tourney, how cool would that be?

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

ILXor chums is this chums who are ilxors or chums of ilxors?

ledge, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

I meant the former, though I guess at some point friends might be okay - just not friends who are really good at poker, and who might discover ILX as a result?

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

how do you lend people the buyin?

ken c, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

They sign up at Full Tilt, I transfer the money to them on the site.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

there's a way to do that??

ken c, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yes! There are some conditions attached, I forget which, but if you open the FT software and go to "requests" or something (in the drop down menus I think) it gives you the option.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

can you test this out by sending me some $$$?

it sounds like a great way of doing commission-free international money transfer..

ken c, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah - AIM me when I'm at home and we'll see what we can do.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

can you test it out by sending me some $$$$, too?

caek, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

hey i asked first!!!

ken c, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

So I get why you play four tables at a time - too boring otherwise. Got to 3 down, 6 to go in a $5.50 tourney, everyone being tight but not particularly aggressive, no huge bets so everyone's stack staying the same, I was bobbing around 10*BB. Got bored after half an hour, pushed when I shouldn't have. Oh well.

ledge, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

Heh - yeah, I know how you felt. The main reason you should play as much as you can concentrate on is because then you won't be distracted, and you'll slip into The Zone that much quicker and more easily. And, of course, you make 4 times as much money.

(last night I four-tabled 6max $50NL for 90 minutes and lost $57, meh)

Mark C, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

i find full tilt particularly dull. i haven't been on one single tourney (the one with you lot excepted) that's been anywhere approaching fun. everyone's stupidly tight and basically it comes down to who ever ends up with a hand wins. it's like watching a 2 hour long episode of the lottery draw where the balls spin for the whole 2 hours and one ball drops out that determines the winner.

ken c, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

which is a fucking bugger cos i put $600 into the account..

i might just join a $500 tourney and blow it all.

ken c, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

at least it'll be over quicker

ken c, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Ken your sample size is pathetically small!

If it's so tight, then become a lagg, run over the table with raises and re-raises! Bet very flop, push over raises! You'll win a lot and you'll have a blast doing so, and you'll extend your game.

Or just play the $1 everyone's-a-donk games if that's the kind of games you want. Full Tilt is just like other sites, there's so much less difference between sites than people think.

Mark C, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

i've been playing the tourneys innit.

i push mark. and then i pick up their pathetic blinds. and then they call me when they have a monster and i don't hit and i fold and lose all the pathetic blinds. it's sad it is.

ken c, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

these guys hate gambling more than i do!

ken c, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

Ken if that's how you see poker maybe you should quit altogether :)

Mark C, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

i've never not quitted!

ken c, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

it's just the greed of the $600 bonus in my account that's keeping me going

ken c, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

being ill on a train with crap wifi didn't help matters i'll give you that

ken c, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

?

caek, Sunday, 18 November 2007 09:37 (eighteen years ago)

I was hoping for more answers before emailing full tilt. I'll try anyway if people are going to be around at 9 tonight?

Mark C, Sunday, 18 November 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)

I could be... but you said they needed four days grace to set it up?

ledge, Sunday, 18 November 2007 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it didn't work. Next Sunday? I might start a new thread.
