John Sharkey is not having a good night.
The singer/guitarist/provocateur of punk rock noise outfit Clockcleaner is sharing a bill at the Khyber with New York City’s Bad Wizard—a band he doesn’t care for, at a club he doesn’t like. It’s cold out, and his furious playing style has caused him to throw out his shoulder again, something he fears is becoming a problem.
After his band’s set, he has a drink. As Bad Wizard begin the night’s last set, he has another.
The show wraps up and Sharkey, still in pain, does what he can to help load gear into the van. He has another drink and goes upstairs to retrieve his coat from the green room. There Sharkey finds Bad Wizard’s “fat, Mr. Kotter-looking” lead singer sitting on his coat. The singer moves when asked, but only slightly.
Suddenly “Mr. Kotter,” who hasn’t made an attempt at conversation the entire gig, lets out a hearty chuckle about the night’s payout. He and his Sweathogs: $600. Clockcleaner: considerably less.
Sharkey, outweighed and an arm short, decides throwing a punch would be less than a smart idea. So instead he takes a breath, goes downstairs and walks toward the exit. To the right of the door sits Bad Wizard’s merch table: CDs, T-shirts, stickers and vinyl all laid out carefully for consumption. It’s unmanned.
Sharkey could walk out, but he doesn’t. Instead he pulls out his penis and, in his own words, “unleashes a bladder-full of the night’s beer piss” all over their merchandise.

“This is the first real authentic taqueria in New York City,” he boasts, and make no mistake, that includes his neighbor. “La Esquina is nowhere near authentic as far as I’m concerned.” So how is Pinche different?
At his spot, Chartier says, abuelitas make fresh tortillas
Wait, this is just as ridiculous - he hires grandmothers to make his tacos so they're more authentic?

I TOTALLY wouldve opened a taco truck, but not if I got competition for the corner of N 7th and Bedford! Word for a while was that someone was going to park a taco truck in the courtyard of Union Pool.
Sometimes late at night I drive down Roosevelt Ave and I just want to say "hey! over there, just over that polluted creek, there are more hungry drunk people with more money than they know what to do with!"
It'd be one thing if they were all doing fine in queens, but it's pretty competitive and for the standards there are always places and trucks opening and closing.

Pickled onions and achiote are what I've read about in lots of Yucatan stuff. I think I actually made these once, you might even have eaten them but I don't remember.
I had tacos from a skanky truck the other day and I expected more awesome. Cabbage and radishes but no salsa out which was unforgiveable.

I have a theory that the west coast climate and access to fresh stuff all the time is why they are such massive, massive chumps when it comes to spicy stuff. I could hardly even find hot INDIAN FOOD in SF. I'm not going to say I didn't enjoy it, but it just ain't the same.
cue west coast people saying something they get somewhere out there is totally hot and spicy and being completely ignorant

I'm all for being taco rockist up to a point, but at some point somebody somewhere in Mexico (or maybe California?) put cabbage in a taco for the first time. Before that, tacos with cabbage weren't real tacos, and after that, they were.
I just read that the Taco Al Pastor is actually an adaptation of schwarma-style meat from Lebanese immigrants to Mexico.

― mizzell, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:08 (eighteen years ago)
I just read that the Taco Al Pastor is actually an adaptation of schwarma-style meat from Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. Fried fish tacos were developed in Baja based on Japanese fisherman's tempura.
― mizzell, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:09 (eighteen years ago)
and the deep-frying used in temupra was imported from Europe, iirc

― mizzell, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:33 (eighteen years ago)
Before that, tacos with cabbage weren't real tacos, and after that, they were.
No, they were. They just weren't "traditional". But now they are. The vast majority of taco eaters didn't but lettuce, tomato, and shredded cheese on their tacos, but lots of white people in Texas preferred that to cilantro and onions (or was it because cilantro wasn't readily available in the US a few decades ago?), and now that's a "traditional" tex-mex taco. Pointing out that most Mexicans don't eat lettuce etc on a taco, while most white people do isn't Tacoist. Neither is saying that cilantro and onions is more authentic, cause it is! Being a snob about it is when you become a Tacoist. Shit, put some ketchup and peanut butter on that bitch if you think it tastes better, who cares, it'll still be a taco.
― Granny Dainger, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:49 (eighteen years ago)
but tex-mex and californians' view of 'mexican food' are two entirely different things.

well your whole bit up there was about texas and tex-mex, whereas the tacos dudes have been discussing for the better part of the thread are more california/baja/yucatan.
anyway, no big deal. i don't wanna become a taco rockist, esp. since i live in new york!
― tehresa, Thursday, 10 April 2008 15:04 (eighteen years ago)
Well, just to nitpick, you can use the word "authentic" with a country or region but not a food, i.e. there might be more and less authentic Yucatanian tacos but not more and less authentic tacos.
― Hurting 2, Thursday, 10 April 2008 15:06 (eighteen years ago)
definitely.
― tehresa, Thursday, 10 April 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)
That makes sense...I've even seen Al Pastor on mexican menus described as pineapple marinated pork from a spit. The best Pastor tacos I've had are from De Mole in Sunnyside, which is shockingly close to Greenpoint and unfortunately more and more people are realizing that because it's getting packed. When I wrote it up for yelp you could always get a seat there, now I won't even go on the weekend. I WAS THERE. Their other tacos are on the bland side but their mole burrito, their tinga beef brisket and other dishes make De Mole one of the best mexican choices in NYC. THERE I GO AGAIN, ruining it for the locals.

15. CALEXICO Wooster St. nr. Prince St. There’s no such thing as a cheap lunch in Soho, you say? Then you haven’t been to this yearling cart, the joint venture of three brothers from Southern California. Most weekdays, hungry hipsters lean against the side of a nearby building, waiting patiently for tacos, burritos, and Mexican-style grilled corn. Come early or risk missing out on some of the more popular items—the chipotle pulled pork, say, or the medium-hot salsa verde. But Calexico’s raison d’etre is the marinated skirt steak called carne asada, a carefully cooked, well-spiced piece of meat cut into manageable chunks and piled into overstuffed $7 burritos or $3 soft-corn-tortilla tacos, properly garnished with cabbage, cilantro, and onion. The marinade recipe is a closely guarded secret, of course, but we thought we detected a subtle undercurrent of A1.

when i first moved out to the bay area, i really missed hot Mexican food and bitched about the lack of spice in all of the food out here.
after living here a few years, my taste buds have adapted, and i enjoy subtle flavors like cilantro, chopped white onions, cabbage, and a generous squeeze of lime - things that aren't overwhelmed by hot sauce.
like pizza, there is no definitive taco or burrito. whether you put mango salsa and rocky jr. chicken on corn tortillas, or you prefer loads of tapatio and spicy ground beef on grilled flour, it's just a template for deliciousness.

Chicagoland has much better Mexican food than the New York area because, duh, more Mexicans.
I never made it to that Matmos place on Bedford that is supposed to be good. A lot of the bodegas make tacos and tamales. The one bodega on the northwest corner of Grand and Bedford (being squeezed out by the two Khim's Millenia Markets) makes what I think are edible $1 tacos for your dirtbag steez.
The whole notion of "white" in 2008 America is pretty meaningless IMO. Such a friggan straw man.

the burritos at la pasadita are just steak, cilantro, and onion. then you add either the black sauce or green sauce. the perfection lies in the simplicity.

so the la pasadita burrito is basically a huge, rolled up taco then? They did look good when I saw people eating them, but I figured there must be rice and/or beans in there somewhere. Why don't you just put potatoes and beans on a hamburger, is what I think about burritos, basically.

when i lived in PHX all the taquerias were similar to Filiberto's. Minimal stuff with meat, pico de gallo, and guacamole. They were very filling and delicious. My favorite burrito in the city was a version of Filiberto's Arizona Burrito, which was steak, pico, cheese, and potatoes.

I ate at a Albertaco's when I was in Colorado, and I was pretty wtf'd by them slopping on a whole gang of guac on my carne asada tacos. No cilantro, no onions, no salsa, just meat and tons of guac.

a version, meaning it wasn't from Filiberto's (which kinda sucked imo) but had identical ingredients.

I love hitting the random small towns in central Washington State that are now heavily Mexican - lots of old 50's burger joints and drive-ins are taquerias now, not to mention disproportionately huge per-capita number of taco trucks.
I've been getting tortas lately but regretting it later because I can only eat so much torta bread before I feel like I'm going to die.

So Monkeytown is reopen, which is great, but they don't apparently have live music anymore, and it's an $80 prepaid prix fixe thing by a rotating cast of chefs.

Love Taco Santana! I don't know what my Mexican friends would say about it but I like it fine.

I did go to a place in Bushwick last weekend that's like in someone's slightly improved garage space. The tortillas were handmade and fresh--my quesadilla didn't have any cheese on it actually so I'm not sure why they call it that, but it tasted awesome.
