Surmounter, Sunday, 25 May 2008 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

If this movie and the Indiana Jones one had traded plots, we would be living in paradise.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 May 2008 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

"we" = not me

:)

although sjp in an indiana jones movie would be funny. she'd take it really seriously.

Surmounter, Sunday, 25 May 2008 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

suzy, Sunday, 25 May 2008 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

I hear the plot of this movie is just American History X with the names changed.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 25 May 2008 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

That's true and here is all the gory plot details (spoilers) (nsfw).

King Boy Pato, Sunday, 25 May 2008 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki, Monday, 26 May 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

sad story.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 26 May 2008 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Turns out it's a remake of Steel Magnolias.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 May 2008 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

u know i'm down

Surmounter, Monday, 26 May 2008 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

you'll like it.

s1ocki, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

:)

Surmounter, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

it's basically like watching half a season in one go, or one big super-sized episode.

s1ocki, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Is it really a remake of Steel Magnolias? Because I cannot be dealing with that shit right now. I may need to drink before hand if this is true.

VeronaInTheClub, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

yes. same script, shot-for-shot remake.

s1ocki, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

you might want to take a flask of cosmos with you.

tehresa, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

one must drink before watching this movie.

Surmounter, Monday, 26 May 2008 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

omg you are such a samantha, girlfriend.

chaki, Monday, 26 May 2008 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

you're so wrong! i am definitely a hybrid of Carrie and Charlotte. hate me now!!

Surmounter, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

he can't, cause he just revealed that he knows the characters' names!

tehresa, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

=P

Surmounter, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

omg u guyz, it's good

Surmounter, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

how many of the 140 minutes are good? I'd believe 25.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

no this is very wrong

Surmounter, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Sexual City

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

the new york magazine article articulated what i felt. i'm not going to type it out now because i'm lazy. the wedding scene was awsome. sjp was great ;)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

Indiana Jones and the Meatpacking District Brunch

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

guys they were all like, 10 feet away from me last night. it was lovely.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

That's about as close as I would get.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

I can't wait till the ads for this movie come down. Having to look at SJP's snout and having to be reminded of this annoying show constantly makes my commute that much more annoying.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

:/

i want one in my bedroom

Surmounter, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

aw, i'm glad you got to go to the premier surmounter. didn't some woman pay like $20k for tickets?

bell_labs, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

omgosh it was ridiculous. people were offering thousands on the street! and of course it was pouring, so i was drenched by the time i got in but no matter ;)

i liked it

s1ocki, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, if you dont like the show, the argument is hardly worth bothering to have.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

wow, Wells being genuinely funny! Even better than what he wrote the other day:

A Fandango survey of 2800 Sex and the City ticket-buyers reports that (a) 94% are women, (b) 67% plan to see it with a group of women; (c) 16% of the female respondents said they are going with a single woman friend; and (d) 6 % said they were going with a man. (I feel sorry for those guys.)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Dom Passantino SPOILER WARNINGS: Carrie revealed as holocaust denier, Miranda kicks a dog to death. 51m ago

deej, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

SPOILER: The characters are all still whining shitheads at the end of the movie.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

omgosh it was ridiculous. people were offering thousands on the street! and of course it was pouring, so i was drenched by the time i got in but no matter ;)

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

jhøshea, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

silver's not a good color for her skin tone.

http://www.nypress.com/21/22/summerguide/summerguide1.cfm

Armond is still worth a read every now and again.

Eric H., Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

she likes to make those fashion choices that are a lot about statement and maybe not enough about sense/skin tone =P

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Sur, you know we love you, but ppl WERE OFFERING THOUSANDS FOR A TICKET TO A MOVIE OF A TV SITCOM ABOUT MANOLOS AND YOU DIDNT SELL!?!?!

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

guys this was ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

howd u get the tix

jhøshea, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

she doesn't get that the impact of the statement would be so much greater if she knew how to color appropriately.

tehresa, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

Eric approvingly links to a review lionizing Irene Dunne?

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

my friend she works for the producer guy. the seats were so great. ogeez i'm actually seeing this again tonight, cuz we had already bought these tix w/ friends b4 i found out about the ON. drunk viewing!

yea i getcha teh... that dress, tho, it was a different color in different lighting. odd.

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Well, more Joan Crawford. (xpost)

Eric H., Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

god, Armond: Like the TV series, Sex and the City never acknowledges that it’s about the benefits of being a middle-class, white New Yorker.

YR KIDDING!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 29 May 2008 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

I only have one pair of Manolos. I am clearly underprivileged, below average middle class white ex-NYer.

suzy, Thursday, 29 May 2008 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

ya, they really try to hide that
xp

s1ocki, Thursday, 29 May 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i guess my lack of designer shoes and driver make me destitute?

tehresa, Thursday, 29 May 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but it's also just a fashion show, it's not supposed to be very real

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

grain of salt ppl

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

MIDDLE-class???

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 29 May 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

this one made me larf:

For one thing, (on the series) Sarah Jessica Parker dressed like somebody's eight-year-old daughter; when she had sex, I felt as though I was watching child molestation.

s1ocki, Thursday, 29 May 2008 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

Haha!

Eric H., Thursday, 29 May 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

MIDDLE-class???

srsly

rogermexico., Thursday, 29 May 2008 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

samantha bee on the daily show just described it as "no exit with feathered hats."

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

I think only charlotte is really new york upper class and she married into it.

Yerac, Friday, 30 May 2008 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

Charlotte's family is rich (not super-rich), while Harry is comfortably upper middle class. I would guess Miranda makes more money than he does, but who knows. Samantha grew up working class, but does pretty well as a business owner. Carrie is not making the big bucks, but gets lots of stuff for free.

gabbneb, Friday, 30 May 2008 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

SatC covers its bases.

Eric H., Friday, 30 May 2008 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

jesus christ this movie seems so incredibly irrelevant

amateurist, Friday, 30 May 2008 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

It gives zeitgeist a bad name.

Eric H., Friday, 30 May 2008 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

That said, I'm not sure whether I'm more depressed by the sheer number of IMDB fanboys rating this one a 1 or the number that rate Shawshank Redemption a 10.

Eric H., Friday, 30 May 2008 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

i don't care about satc, but there's an awful lot of plain old eww-girlz-cooties in the haterating. the movie can't be objectively dumber, shallower or more beholden to mammon than most of the rest of the hollywood summer.

i wonder if the reception would be different if hillary had won.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

^ this.

whatever, it's a light romcom. satc (the show, but hte movie too) at least has the virtue of being way better written than most of the examples of its genre. irrelevant? really? talk about a use other criticisms pls situation.

s1ocki, Friday, 30 May 2008 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

i mean next to MADE OF HONOR this is like lubitsch

s1ocki, Friday, 30 May 2008 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

I could imagine this being way better than Lubitsch.

Eric H., Friday, 30 May 2008 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

you could?

s1ocki, Friday, 30 May 2008 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

don't know why i'm going to the mat for this one, i guess this sort of kneejerk hateration always kind of gets on my nerves esp when it's pretty undeserved.

s1ocki, Friday, 30 May 2008 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

sex and the city is so fucking lame and corny.

Where's my Golden Girls movie? Now there's a fucking show...

The Brainwasher, Friday, 30 May 2008 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

liked it. lolled at the skanks in the audience (saw it @ universal citywalk, so we got all the valley trash, all dolled up like their favorite characters) (it was a young crowd, surprisingly cougar-free).

am i the only one who finds the miranda-steve storyline REALLY BORING? i mean, i've always thought miranda was a boring character, and it's a shame that the writers never put in more lawyer/feminist stuff for her to do. at least samantha still gets to be the headstrong career woman.

get bent, Friday, 30 May 2008 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

i thought the writing was great, all the predictability and potty humor aside. slocki's right, this is pretty far from being what happens in vegas, or the traveling pants franchise, or any number of other turkeys i could name.

get bent, Friday, 30 May 2008 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think bushnell is really that much of a feminist. miranda-steve is the axis of realism in a fantasy-oriented show, which may make you notice that they're underwritten more than the other characters do. cynthia nixon is one of only two native new yorkers in the cast (the other is evan handler as harry g).

gabbneb, Friday, 30 May 2008 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

sjp's not native but she's lived in and around nyc since she was a kid

get bent, Friday, 30 May 2008 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

Manohla Dargis: The writing is el stink-o.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

what would bitter new yorkers do without satc to hate?

saw it again last night, the audience seemed to like it/find it slightly absurd. i got everyone clapping.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

i get to choose b/w seeing this & indiana jones tomorrow

so conflicted NOT

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

right even tho indy is gonna BLOW.

wedding scene still a killer

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

a 53 on Metacritic, and LOL Ebert:

I am not the person to review this movie. Perhaps you will enjoy a review from someone who disqualifies himself at the outset, doesn’t much like most of the characters and is bored by their bubble-brained conversations.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

man do i ever love that guy

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

like s1ocki et al, i just don't understand why it's such a big deal. omgs ppl in a movie/tv show are unrealistic?!?!?! yeah, the marketing is overdone, but it will be gone soon enough. i'd rather hear about this than high school musical 58.

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha otm

also don't ppl get tired of complaining about it?

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

it's like complaining about times square or something.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

seriously. there are a million stupid movies, but why waste the energy getting so indignant about them?

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

i dont complain about it i just tell girls im not willing to sit through it

SATC isnt a big deal to me its just fucking stupid is all

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

re indignation -- BECAUSE TV shows that have jumped the shark should not be PRETENDING to be movies, yet one more example of an elephant crowding out the ghost of a chance that ppl will watch something original and not presold.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

bullshit

fun movies can exist, just for fun.

speaking of pretending, isn't it pretentious to discount a movie because it's based on a funny TV show?

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

throwdown

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

and wtf does original mean anyway? way too vague.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

is it seriously realistic to think that someone buying a ticket to satc would really choose the artistic film that is "about something real" if they had to choose a different movie? not buying it.

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

It's not pretentious; it's knowing that CINEMA is a different medium from HBO cash cows.

(bevare, Sur, many have naught returned from de territory into vich you are kreeping...)

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

xp: yes, teez -- at the Chelsea Clearview, for example, they might wait for the annual revival screening of The Women (1939)! At least those faggots laugh at something genuinely funny once in a while!

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

so if they are different media, why even compare them!?
xpost

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

it seems outdated to take the high-brow perspective on it. it's one thing to dislike it, but the professorial stuff is unnecessary.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

a once a year cult thing is not quite the same as someone waiting in line for satc and it's sold out so they buy a ticket to made of honor instead...

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's not pretentious; it's knowing that CINEMA is a different medium from HBO cash cows.

(bevare, Sur, many have naught returned from de territory into vich you are kreeping...)

that's an unfortunate statement.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

xxp: But I will bet my bippy this film is NOT different, but a blowup of the TV show.

also:

http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/01_03/kimcattrallREX_468x558.jpg

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

and not that this is the point, but i have laughed at The Women, and other CINEMATIC movies. i just think it's incredibly narrow-minded to think that's the only kind of film with any merit.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

this is basically like saying Ashlee Simpson could never produce good music. shortsighted.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

what is the rent under Kim C's hat?

Sur, we would never agree on the defs of "highbrow" and "hideous crap," so let's quit.

(I consider Dude, Where's My Car? and Bubble Boy to be cinematic, just to confuse you.)

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

xxp: But I will bet my bippy this film is NOT different, but a blowup of the TV show.

that wasn't what i was saying referring to media. it was your comparison of HBO tv show turned movie vs. CINEMA

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

we can quit, but it really does upset me to believe there are still perceptions today that things that make money, or are popular, or superficial, must be hideous crap. it's just sooooooo traditional and awful.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

also: tho this may be a cash cow of a movie, it brought happiness to my week. and for a lot of other people. it probably brought michael patrick king a lot of happiness to make it. that's something in and of itself.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Shopping for labels, shopping for love
Manolo and Louis, it’s all I’m thinking of
Shopping for labels, shopping for love
Manolo and Louis, it’s all I’m thinking of

I already know what my addiction is
I be looking for labels, I ain’t looking for love
I shop for purses while I walk out the door
Don’t cry, buy a bag and then get over it
And, I’m not concerned with all the politics
It’s a lot of men I know I could find another one.

What I know is that I’m always happy when I walk out the store, store
I’m guessing Supercalifragi-sexy, nothing to be playing with
I love him, hate him, kiss him, diss him, tryna to walk a mile in my kicks

(Chorus)
Love’s like a runway but which one do I love more
No emotional baggage, just big bags filled with Dior
Love’s like a runway, so what’s all the fussing for
Let’s stop chasing them boys and shop some more

I know I might come off as negative
I be looking for labels, I ain’t looking for love
Relationships are often so hard to tame
A Prada dress has never broken my heart before
And, ballin’s something that I’m fed up with
I’mma do the damn thing, watch me do the damn thing
Cause I know that my credit card will help me put out the flames
I’m guessing Supercalifragi-sexy, nothing to be playing with
I love him, hate him, kiss him, diss him, tryna to walk a mile in my kicks

Gucci, Fendi, Prada purses, purchasing them finer things
Men they come a dime a dozen, just give me them diamond rings
I’m into a lot of bling, Cadallic, Chanel and Coach
Fellas boast but they can’t really handle my female approach
Buying things is hard to say
Rocking Christian Audigier, Manolo, Polo, taking photos in my Cartier
So we can’t go all the way, I know you might hate it but
I’m a shop for labels while them ladies lay and wait for love

bell_labs, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

there are still perceptions today that things that make money, or are popular, or superficial, must be hideous crap

dude, I'm the one who gets raked over the coals here for saying E.T. is a great American film, I'd never make such a sweeping condemnation. The bad reviews aren't saying this, but other things.

it probably brought michael patrick king a lot of happiness to make it. that's something in and of itself.

That's nice.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

Wait a sec -- yes, everything that is SUPERFICIAL is crap. By definition.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

it is nice.

you didn't make that sweeping condemnation, but when you talk about cinema and originality etc, it feels like classic filmsnobbery, which makes me upset.

ET is a great american film.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

uh, no, superficial doesn't necessarily mean crap. i'm sure you have a lot of superficial stuff happening in your life, and it's not all crap. i wear makeup and i like to look good, which i don't think is crappy.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

omg u have me so riled up. arguments like this are a privilege.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

haha, if you say so hon. Don't get mad! Nobody's going to stop them from making two more movies if this one makes a shitload of dough.

i wear makeup and i like to look good, which i don't think is crappy

But perhaps that's not superficial! Throw out the dictionary if nec.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

The inimitable K-Lo:

Walking out of the theater, filled with very many twenty-somethings (as you might expect), some dressed in their best couture and/or knock-offs, girl-with-her-cooperative-boyfriend couples, more groups of girls, some girls with a well-dressed man with an obvious affinity for the movie — I took note of the first two things I heard.

The first was: “Oh my God, but he’s soooo cute.” That gal was referring to the decision of Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) to leave the (soooo cute) guy who loves her because she loves herself more.

The next thing I heard was, “F*** you, b**ch” as a group of girls were annoyed someone else got the first cab. It was the first cab they saw.

Maybe it’s because it was 3 in the morning, but I found the two comments striking and sad. Here’s a movie that in many ways was a beautiful — albeit crass and p.c. and graphic (like the late television show) — love story. Here’s a movie with suffering and joy and life and cultural lessons, but some of the people I heard leaving the theater didn’t seem to have been affected. I’ll grant you that maybe, just maybe, New Yorkers have too many layers of emotional protection — especially the ones out after midnight on a school night — to let their more tender feelings show at an AMC, but if you had also heard where they laughed and applauded during the movie, you, too, would probably be concerned.

lol "a beautiful -- albeit crass, p.c, graphic -- love story"

I did see it today, yes - bought a ticket and everything.

It might be true that I don't like things like this, but I don't think that would invalidate any criticisms from me. I'm certainly not against films about women, or films set in New York, or films about love or friendship, or even films adapted from TV programmes. This film is all those things. But it's really bad. I'll read a couple of reviews and see how alone I am in this response.

the pinefox, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

you're right, that doesn't invalidate your criticism! but official reviews shouldn't validate them either.

but is it any worse than the show?

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

new york mag:
I shall not spoil what follows, but the wedding sequence (about midway through) is a heart-stopper—a mirthless farce in which cell phones and limos function as agents of the unconscious. It’s a chance to watch Parker pull out the acting stops, and she’s spectacularly good: The neediness that makes her one of our giddiest comediennes is also a kind of black hole. Parker has come in for some monstrous derision of late—and I suppose it’s understandable, given that she’s pushed on billboards as the personification of kitty-cat sultriness. But you can sense the fragility beneath the poses. She’s always the little girl dressing up, wriggling from one outfit to the next, elated for a bit but apt to wither in the face of rejection or self-doubt. There are plenty of reasons to resent Carrie’s incessant hunger for designer anything, but how can you resent Parker’s fleeting enchantment? It’s what anchors the show.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

jhøshea, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

I agree that official reviewers have no more validity than I do.

I didn't really like the series, though at one stage I watched it quite a lot. I think I liked the fact that the character Berger (sp?) reminded me of Lloyd Cole, and I was annoyed that he was so casually written out.

In the film, the one character I quite warmed to, actually, was Mr Big. There was almost more reality about him, and a dignity in the way he had to suffer alone and almost entirely unregarded for the whole film.

I also felt that the film improved a little as it went on, the second half better than the first.

What I didn't like about it is so extensive that it would be hard to do justice to. It included:

- ludicrous affluence: literally anything and everything was affordable all the time - not just the odd pair of shoes or handbag, but an infinity of outfits, an impossibly expensive wedding, an even more impossibly expensive apartment, etc. There was not one moment at which any character wondered whether they could afford something - apart perhaps from Carrie's black secretary who had to rent accessories. So what? I suppose this trivializes the film, takes it away from any statement on life.

- extraordinarily flat script: again and again when some kind of zinging comeback or dry remark was called for, we got the most banal phrases, as though it was a first draft to which the wit had not been added. For a programme / film supposedly about dashing / witty / metropolitan types this was a big gap.

- I thought that the film wanted to take itself quite seriously on issues of love, relationships, loss, sadness and so on. But I found its shallowness on these - immensely important - issues offensive. I found its emotional politics utterly bogus, utterly unreal. It didn't seem to have been written by someone who ever has been hurt, or seen a relationship go wrong or end, or tried to save one, or been sad or alone. It felt like it was by someone who has never had an emotional life at all, save perhaps in imagination; or maybe a 14-year-old dreaming dozily of what it would be like to be a woman.

- I suppose I just find the interaction between them, whooping at each other's arrivals and so on, very tired and again, very unreal. I don't find this a serious portrait of friendship (which is what it gets acclaimed as); again it's like the idea of friendship of someone who's never really had any friends.

the pinefox, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

but see these are all the givens of sex and the city! they all have too much money. it takes itself too seriously, and doesn't really get at the issues in a meaningful way. the friendships are sentimental and picturesque, and the scripts are pretty regular.

it's like criticizing chocolate for being too chocolatey!

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

i dont think that the shows dialogue being not witty is part of the show

deej, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

you're right. except the writing has often been criticized for trying to be overly witty, and in the end failing to be truly clever. all the pun stuff etc.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

i mean rly i think if you're into this, you're watching it for the actresses. that's what it boils down to. if you're not into all the clothes, the cheesy lines and friendship, and you're not into the actresses, there's really not much there.

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm into friendship, and I'm into love. I think the film thinks it is too. But I don't think it's any good on those things.

And this is why I hate the show and hope that this movie is the nail in its coffin so that it can fade into the background. I complain about it because some of my friends who I would think would have better sense than to like this kind of shit are waiting in line to see it, and I see reminders of this vacuous, glib trash in ads all over town. I'm not terribly snobby w/r/t movies and books, but this show....no.

there was just something so drawn-out and dumb about the conflicts/misunderstandings in the movie -- carrie vs. big, carrie vs. miranda, miranda vs. steve -- that it was a little frustrating to watch. i used to like the show, but most of the bright snappiness i remembered was missing here.

J.D., Friday, 6 June 2008 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, this is really ridiculous. It's a fairy tale. If we would have to validate every little thing in tv series, they would run in the hours instead of 40 minutes. Sex&TheCity is about escapism. That said, at one point she did lament not being able to afford Blahniks. It was dropped a few times in the series. Which I thought was, I guess, done for the ones who moaned it was unrealistic. BUt come on, this is not about realism! Look at the hats, look at the clothes! It's fun, fun and some MORE FUN.

Also, I'd jump on Mr Big's leg and ride it all the way to Lalaland if I could.

a few things i noticed though -

when big and carrie were kissing, it was so devoid of real/believable passion. for a film called sex and the city, i wouldnt have minded if all the sex scenes were deleted.

also, most of the guys in this film acted like theyd been neutered! i know its all about the women but at least in the few episodes of SATC i saw, big had a bit more balls. here, he just seemed deflated.

I just watched this. Pinefox OTM and then some. As a TV series, it all seemed good in half-hour chunks, but a whole interminable movie made me hate it. It magnified all its terrible flaws to the point where it was nothing *but* flaws. It took all the things it thought were good about the characters but seemed to miss the mark so many times. They were like grotesque caricatures of the seemingly-likeable caricatures they portray. Perhaps it was the extended format that did for it - it would probably have made an OK final series divided up into shorter episodic parts, with a week-long gap inbetween each bit, with added other background stuff.

btw, if I never see that "Charlotte shits her pants" bit ever again, I'll be a happy woman. A very low point in a movie peppered with low points. Jennifer Hudson was great though (even though the whole "move to big city to find love and, oh look, small town girls go and find small town love in their small town" bit was kind of tacky in the extreme)

The shoehorning/sidelining of Harry/Stanford/Anthony/Magda etc was shit as well.

More Edelstein lols:

It begins with the nightmarish manic gaiety of Mamma Mia!, with strenuous lockjawed smiles that make you think you’re watching stroke victims. Then Liza Minnelli shows up to perform a gay marriage. Heralded (and hooted at) as the embodiment of camp unreality, she looks more human—nervous but happy to belong somewhere—than the four leads.

The thinking behind the movie (written and directed by Michael Patrick King) is undisguised. Let’s start with an over-the-top gay wedding! Then we’ll send the girls to Abu Dhabi so they can rile up the fundamentalists with their sexuality! Then they’ll make fun of women in niqab (“Certainly cuts down on the Botox bill!”) but later show (campy) feminist solidarity! Won’t they look great swishing around the desert being waited on by smooth young Arab men?

I thought it was sort of nice how, in the show, Stanford and Anthony hated each other because on every other show, everyone who is gay seems to be best friends because they Share a Common Bond or whatever. So to have them marry (quite arbitrarily!!) simply because they are the two gays on the show strikes me as really tasteless and pretty offensive and not at all progressive.

yeah but i think when making a movie version of a TV show (esp. only a few years after the show was on the air) kinda raises the impetus to make it feel much bigger/longer than just a supersized episode or whatever. and of course they're not gonna make the plot complex enough to justify 2.5 hours, it's frigging Sex And The City, but the movie is for people who loved that show and want to see more more more of it, not people who want a good concise light comedy.

I once watched Béla Tarr's Sátántangó, the legendary, gloomy black-and-white Hungarian film that lasts for seven and a half hours. Compared to the Abu Dhabi section of Sex And The City 2, Sátántangó zips past like an episode of Spongebob Squarepants.

it is a shame, tho, that michael patrick king couldn't get it together enough to write a tighter, more natural script. i mean, good SATC episodes are TIGHT, and free-flowing. the movies are just ... it's kind of like a kid who figured out that this one joke makes all the adults laugh, and tells it over and over and over again. the actresses are still great to watch, and some of the writing is genuinely fun, but all in all it's a hodge-podge of one man's attempts at re-living the grandeur of past greatness: corny, self-pressured and unfocused.

that being said, i STILL had an amazing time at the screening. go figure.

A.O. Scott:

The first “Sex and The City” movie, which came out two years ago, qualifies as a comedy both because it is somewhat funny and because, according to a more classical definition, it ends, after some reversals and delays, with a wedding. The sequel — which should have borrowed a subtitle from another picture opening this week and called itself “Sex and the City: The Sands of Time” — begins with a wedding and never seems to end. Your watch will tell you that a shade less than two and a half hours have elapsed, but you may be shocked at just how much older you feel when the whole thing is over.

The wedding, the characters frequently remark, with the mixture of insouciant mockery and cosmopolitan self-congratulation that seems to have become the hallmark of this weary franchise, is a gay one. Stanford (Willie Garson) and Anthony (Mario Cantone) have made honest men of each other, giving the four main female characters, their male companions and the director, Michael Patrick King, a chance to wink, nod and drag out Liza Minnelli to perform “All the Single Ladies.” Her version is in no way superior to the one in “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” and it is somehow both the high point of “Sex and the City 2” and a grim harbinger of what is to come. The number starts out campy, affectionate and self-aware, but at some point turns desperate, grating and a little sad.

Carrie Bradshaw: At the end of the first SATC movie (2008)—after eleventy decades of chasing his emotionally abusive jowls through the streets of Manhattan—Carrie finally marries Mr. Big, the man of her shallow, self-obsessed dreams. It has now been two years since their nuptials. Carrie already hates it. She hates that he sits on the couch. She hates that he eats noodles out of a take-out box. She hates that he wants to spend quality time with her in their incredibly expensive and gaudy apartment. She hates that he bought her an enormous television. When Big suggests that they spend a couple of days a week in separate apartments (they own TWO apartments, because life is hard!), Carrie screeches, "Is this because I'm a bitch wife who nags you?" Congratulations. You have answered your own question.

Miranda Redhairlawyerface: Miranda is a lawyer who has red hair. She also has a child. As a working woman, Miranda is forced to miss every single one of her child's incessant science fairs (as though children know anything of science!). Also, her lawyer boss is a cartoon dick. Miranda quits her job, and everyone is much happier. This is because women should not work. It is terrible for the children.

Why is Samantha wearing white shoes with a black dress? We are not supposed to question the SATC universe; it should wash over us like a fetid fart.

It makes me sad that anyone who isn't Mormon would willingly dress like they're headed off to the temple to do marriage ceremonies by proxy for their long-dead great-great-gramamaws.

in a movie that feigns to tackle the complexities of modern romance, all a gay man needs to do to find love is be placed in the general vicinity of another gay person -- even if he's as repellent as Mario Cantone.
