Is it wrong to ANTICIPATE Ryan Murphy's new show GLEE?

So, hit all my guilty pleasure spots tonight. I was really not looking to add this show to my list, but I guess I'll be watching it next season. Anyone else?

Mordy, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'm waiting for it to premiere here on the west coast...

kate78, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 02:33 (seventeen years ago)

I should've liked this, but didn't. Dunno what it was about that didn't sit right either, but I don't ever judge a show solely on its pilot episode. I'll pick it up again in the fall and see what's what.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

looking forward to seeing this

s1ocki, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

Nip/Tuck turned pretty much completely to shit after the first two seasons, so I don't have great hopes for this.

Simon H., Wednesday, 20 May 2009 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

god nip/tuck turned so laughable (not that it wasn't ridic to begin with but it was fun ridic). the last episode I saw had a guy with a fetish for inanimate objects fucking a couch

dmr, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't hate this. I'll give it a few episodes.

LINE SPOILERSSSSS

Offering up a clue as to whether or not romance will blossom, the actor slips into character long enough to deliver a bit of Finn’s dialogue from the second episode: “It’s really strange. I can’t stop thinking about Rachel. I really dig her in a Swimfan kind of way and her body is smokin’… if you’re not into boobs!”

have the lime of your life, heyyyyyy (Tape Store), Saturday, 23 May 2009 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

We watched this again tonight (wife hadn't seen it yet) on Hulu. It's really cute. We like it a lot.

Mordy, Saturday, 23 May 2009 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

I loved the tangential visual commentary throughout. Smart stuff. It feels like an HBO-ish attempt to create a hipper High School Musical. I just hope the jock doesn't represent a "normality" around which all the other characters/types revolve.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 23 May 2009 05:17 (seventeen years ago)

Hop on AIM, Kevin, so we can chat about it!

Mordy, Saturday, 23 May 2009 05:19 (seventeen years ago)

I liked it, I don't know how far the plot can carry the show but I do plan on watching this fall.

ti's girl on the outside (musically), Saturday, 23 May 2009 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

I know it's just the pilot but did anyone else think this felt like your standard dance/musical movie squashed into a one-hour episode? They shouldn't have gone with the Glee club getting so good by the end there - it almost seems like they might be setting up their success a little too early. Also I really hope they get rid of the multiple voiceovers as the pacing was all over the place. Maybe they could go with one character voiceover per episode.

love the whole concept otherwise - it really is cute! I like most of the characters already. Plus I'm still missing the pathetic sweetness of Pushing Daisies and this seems like it could be a good replacement.

Roz, Saturday, 23 May 2009 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

The voiceover thing is the typical pilot convenience that will dropped by episode 3 or so, I would bet.

ti's girl on the outside (musically), Saturday, 23 May 2009 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't hate the voiceovers.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 September 2009 04:02 (sixteen years ago)

irony of the night: girl who sang the last song was TOTALLY not gleeful. in the least.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 September 2009 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

ok this show! still dying at the "accident" visual cue.

Roz, Friday, 11 September 2009 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha yes, it's a good sign that even the obvious jokes are still hilarious; I also like the nuance in the portrayal of some of the scenarios, like the obvious conflict going on within the shrewish wife

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

It feels kind of ballsy for the show to make the lead character married and then set up a separate love interest, even if the wife is portrayed as the most despicable person ever.

jaymc, Friday, 11 September 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

As long as her sister exists, the wife can't possibly be the most despicable person ever!

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

Also <3 Jane Lynch:
"That was the most offensive thing I’ve seen in 20 years of teaching -- and that includes an elementary school production of Hair."

jaymc, Friday, 11 September 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

"How much does it cost per page to make copies?"
"SEVENTEEN CENTS"

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

Rachel: I'm not bulimic. I tried, but i guess i don't have a gag reflex.
Emma: When you're older, you'll find that will be a gift.

Roz, Friday, 11 September 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

I want to like this.

However... two storylines where neurotic women pine after hapless nice guys who are already taken by shrill, manipulative blond bitches is overkill, and also forced and lazy. (Yeah, they're obviously meant to parallel, but give the characters actual distinct personalities first, plz.)

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

The cheerleader bitch isn't shrill and the quarterback isn't hapless. Also, you're completely ignoring the coach's pursuit of OCD counselor.

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

And if you think show choir diva and OCD counselor are interchangeable... um well basically I suggest actually watching the show as opposed to making up stuff based on commercials.

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

true, the diva & the counselor aren't exactly interchangeable, but they both represent the same thing to the male leads, ie chasing their dreams, the weirdness of loving show choir over more conventional masculine pursuits

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

it's a bit snide to suggest that I haven't watched it. of course I have, and I generally liked it, but I'm a bit worried about the laziness of the storylines & characterization

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

I think that's an unnecessarily superficial reading of a show that's already pretty shallow! The read on the adult relationship is pretty accurate but I don't think that's what is going on with the kids at all.

The kid relationship is pretty much cookie-cutter popular/unpopular TV dynamics with the added wrinkle of the popular kid mainly liking her because she seems to be willing to put out; once his chaste girlfriend pops back into the picture, the unpopular girl fades away.

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

ok, fair enough, perhaps I'm being "unnecessarily superficial" about the admittedly shallow teenage love triangle. that's definitely a more interesting read of the situation. but I still reserve my concern that it all felt a bit too labored, which is kind of a drag for a show that's supposed to be so fun and buoyant (that's what it says on the tin).

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not sure which sense of "labored" you mean; are you talking plotwise (ie, events are too far-fetched) or actingwise (ie, the portrayals aren't convincing)?

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

plotwise (I like the actors). for example, the diva's sudden grand passion for the jock seemed rushed. also, the wife and the cheerleader girlfriend are such unlikable caricatures that it reduces the dramatic tension, because there's no conflict, no question of who we should root for.

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

and yeah, it's not so much a grand passion as a teenage crush, but I still think it's overplayed

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

I think that instead of setting up the conflicts as Character A V. Character B., Glee is setting them up as conflicts for the protagonist. The cheerleader and wife are clearly antagonists, but the dilemma isn't whether to root for them, but how our protagonists should deal with them. Ie; Instead of the tension being Do We Prefer OCD Girl or Wife, it's really, how should the teacher deal with a wife he doesn't feel intimate with, and is perhaps starting to realize is not the most wonderful person in the world, and weigh the feelings he may have with the OCD girl with the ideas of fidelity, family and honor. All the pressure of the plot is on him. The wife is just a foil for that.

Mordy, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

And I don't see how they're overplaying the ingenue's crush on the football player. I get the impression she's outspoken, pretty sexually curious, and feels constrained by this small town she has to live in. When she gets to college, she'll probably forget Finn's name in a minute and a half, but for the meantime, she's into him.

Mordy, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

I think they're dropping that somewhat with the wife and this whole hysterical pregnancy thing; she's clearly being influenced poorly by her sister in the previews but she clearly was going to come clean about the whole thing right before freaking out and lying, and she also clearly feels shitty about the whole situation. I do agree that the show could have done a better job of showing the bond between them and I felt like the beginning of that dinner scene started to show that.

The cheerleader is more explainable because it's been artistic convention for a while that the quarterback dates a hot cheerleader regardless of how shitty said cheerleader is; there's also hints under her harpy exterior that she has genuine feelings for him beyond being a checkbox on an accessory list, as hinted at in her proactive audition and the subsequent conversation with the Cheerios coach.

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

"And I'm going to get my boyfriend back."

"Yeah. I don't care so much about that."

Mordy, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha yes

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

Can't say that I believed too strongly in the cheerleader's genuine feelings for her boyfriend. Her scheming in order to join show choir seemed more like plot mechanics (gets her and her cheerios in position for future conflict and hijinks with the glee club people) than an effort to give her emotional depth.

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)

jesus people it's the second episode. let it live a little.

Roz, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

Well, glee girl crashed the celibacy club and undermined her in front of her boyfriend on her own turf; it makes some amount of sense that she'd try to get payback (and that she'd bring reinforcements with her). The depth bit is basically what I read into her portrayal during the scene where she begged not to be kicked off the Cheerios.

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

fair enough, Roz! I would love nothing more than for my concerns to be unfounded and for this show to be unreservedly awesome and lovable.

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

And also, whether or not the plot is unlikely, I lol'd so many times during this last episode.

Mordy, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

I think reservations are good but if I disagree or find yours silly, I'll say so! I mean, my biggest fear is that the writing level is going to drop and we're going to be left with maniacal energy substituting for actual humor (part of this being driven by the fear that they will never top the gag reflex line).

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

How are the clothes? Good friend from high school is doing the costume design.

lacoste intolerant (suzy), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:44 (sixteen years ago)

good but it's no gossip girl, sorry.

Roz, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

I wasn't wondering whether or not it was Gossip Girl...don't think that's really J's style anyway (she used to do Nip and Tuck).

lacoste intolerant (suzy), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

So she just works with Ryan Murphy then.

jaymc, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

don't mind your disagreement at all, HI DERE, I think they increased my appreciation of the show. and anyway, what's more boring than a mutual admiration society.

probably I'm inclined to be nitpicky just because they took a few cheap shots at Chic and disco, ha.

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

They also called the song "Freak Out," wtf.

jaymc, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

xpost to suzy

serious answer, the colours on the show are pretty bright and all the characters currently dress pretty much as you'd expect their characters to dress - red cheerleader outfits for the cheerleaders, sweater vests and knee high socks for the preppy diva, etc. i guess she'll have more to do as glee club expands, and they start needing costumes for performances and competitions.

Roz, Friday, 11 September 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

LOL sounds like Square Pegs. J will be in her element, was the tiny cheerleader at the top of the pyramid in HS. I'm pencilled in to visit her in LA, where she will take me to the secret warehouse full of vintage Halston etc. She's done loads of films too; back then she was Veronica amidst the Heathers.

lacoste intolerant (suzy), Friday, 11 September 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

J, not L?

jaymc, Friday, 11 September 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

One bizarre thing is that we've never seen the cheerleaders not wearing their uniforms. It's as if they don't own any other articles of clothing.

Mordy, Friday, 11 September 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

There is a definite intentional level of unreality going on in this show; it's kind of like "Saved With The Bell" meets "Malcolm in the Middle" in that regard.

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

what it is is a more adult high school musical.

Roz, Friday, 11 September 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

"Adult high school musical" is really an awful description. It's closer to a "high school Nip/Tuck."

Mordy, Friday, 11 September 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

i've never watched nip/tuck so can't say. i just threw HSM out there based on the bright colour palette, use of stock high school characters, and obviously the singing and dancing.

Roz, Friday, 11 September 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

Now that the crazy wife is on the defensive, I kind of love her -- at the current level of unreality I can totally see her stealing a baby or doing something similarly batshit.

The only complaint I had was that the songs were way overprocessed and the lip-syncing was pretty bad all around. But if pandering to iTunes sales is what keeps Jane Lynch on my screen, I'll take it.

gmail im going to murder u at a beach party (reddening), Friday, 11 September 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

100% agree w/r/t the lip-syncing. Esp during Gold Digger. Just horribly done.

Mordy, Friday, 11 September 2009 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

haha yes, but given all of the other unrealistic things happening I found it charming rather than annoying (that won't last tho)

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

i tried to watch this show but they were overlaying a fuckin' twitter feed between viewers and the actors on the show while it was playing, probably the most annoying fucking thing i've ever seen.

Yeah, it took me a while to figure out who was supposed to be doing lead vocals on that. (I mean, I know Will said "I'll do it," but it didn't even look like he was singing until halfway through.)

jaymc, Friday, 11 September 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah the vocals are very Bollywood, they don't seem to be trying to fool the audience into thinking the actors are doing the singing "live" at all. There should at least be a pretense of it.

musically, Friday, 11 September 2009 22:33 (sixteen years ago)

watched the first two episodes. it seems alright but high school setting + narration by multiple characters + musical cues + jock dude who looks a lot like chris klein + unpopular uptight overachieving high school girl just reminds me of election, then i just wish i was watching election instead.

plus all of the musical numbers are deeply deeply embarrassing. not in an entertaining way, in a cringing behind my hands kind of way.

and the black member of the glee club (uh "mercedes washington" lol) is a really ridiculous stereotype at this point, they better start giving her more of a role soon. i know it's early and most of the glee kids aren't fleshed out at all yet but literally every one of her lines has been some kind of cliche

The pilot generated some enthusiasm for me, especially the "Don't Stop Believin" finale, but the second ep made it clear that they had about one hour's worth of interesting ideas for this show.

Plus, I am not usually the first guy to stand up and complain about noxious gender politics on TV, but really, don't you get the feeling that the people who made this show kind of think that women are horrific castrating harpies almost without exception? And doesn't that sour it for you just a little bit? It's like they watched Leslie Mann's brilliant and complicated star turn in _Knocked Up_ and came away saying "wow, bitches keep men away from their hobbies, i hate that too!"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 14 September 2009 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

Leslie Mann's brilliant and complicated star turn in _Knocked Up_

you totally lost me here

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Monday, 14 September 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

Because you thought she was bad in it or because you think that movie also takes the view that women are horrid shrews or because you think Glee doesn't at bottom take this view?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 14 September 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

Because I didn't think it was a brilliant or complicated star turn and because I think that if you are going to believe the creators think that women are horrid shrews, you also have to believe they think men are spineless feebs. I believe you are mistaking caricature for honest sentiment; the entire thing is supposed to be exaggerated farce, not cinema verite.

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Monday, 14 September 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

[i]I think that if you are going to believe the creators think that women are horrid shrews, you also have to believe they think men are spineless feebs.[i]

I guess I do kind of believe they think this, and I think it's a piece of the same noxiousness.

I don't think this is supposed to be "realistic," but neither is stand-up comedy, and I still think it's pretty hacky and unpleasant when people's act is 90% "why are they all such bitches? why do we spineless feebs stand for it?"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 14 September 2009 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

It's about where the show's sympathies lie, not who's "better". In Knocked Up the women were obnoxious harpies and the men were immature children but the movie's heart lie with the men. Same with Glee, you can rationalize all you want and justify their behavior and etc but in the end the show's heart lies with the male characters, not their female significant others.

musically, Monday, 14 September 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know about that. The show's heart clearly does not lie with Will's wife or with Quinn, but that's because it asks us to sympathize instead with Emma and Rachel.

The ever dapper nicolars (Nicole), Thursday, 24 September 2009 02:05 (sixteen years ago)

that whole episode was an abundance of riches. whoever wrote that "Sue C's It" bit is a genius.

scott seward, Thursday, 24 September 2009 02:09 (sixteen years ago)

Only thing I disliked about the episode was the Quinn/Finn/other dude thing.

Mordy, Thursday, 24 September 2009 02:14 (sixteen years ago)

The problem I have is that the female characters. Rachel, the asian girl and the OCD counselor are okay but the other ones are just awful and I hate it when they're on the screen (Sue kinda transcends her awfulness). Whereas even the mohawk "bad" guy has shades of gray and was amenable to doing the dance on the field.

i think i don't really like this show, but the newest episode was better because it focused on kurt, and the dude who plays kurt has a really interesting weird charisma. since the characters are such broad cliches, they pretty much live or die on the acting skills/charisma of the actors. i'd watch a show that was just about kurt, jane lynch, the crazy guidance counselor, and the football coach.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 24 September 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

Hm, I was about ready to give up on it, but maybe I'll watch this latest episode.

katherine helmand province (jaymc), Thursday, 24 September 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

Finally caught up with eps. 3 & 4. Still not appreciating the plot contrivances. Making Mercedes dumb as a post to create fake drama between her and Kurt, Little Miss Celibacy suddenly pregnant just as Will's wife decides she needs to get her hands on a baby? ugh. It's not supposed to be naturalistic, but ugh.

But the characters are becoming more interesting, especially as it moves away from the conventional lead types (n/a otm about Kurt). Plenty of lols ("I'm living in a cocoon of horror!", Jane Lynch's overpronunciation of Celine Dion, "yes we cane" omg) throughout. If the performances stay strong and they keep cracking the jokes and coming up with sequences as deliriously bonkers as the 'Single Ladies' numbers, this could be a classic show, no foolin.

i'd watch a show that was just about kurt, jane lynch, the crazy guidance counselor, and the football coach.

Cosign this entire post (if you throw in the kimono-wearing guy from Groundhog Day). Every episode has these parts that don't work for me at all, but I keep coming back because Kurt, Jane Lynch et al are so satisfying to watch.

i kinda pretty much wish the whole show was jane lynch. not so much kurt but whatever i'll take him if it means i get jane lynch lols. also what's her name the one who wanted to be maria w/ the football crush... i love her because i knew like 30 of her.

yeah see normally i'd agree with this but i think footballers doing single ladies + jane lynch + high schoolers doing campy musical numbers in general just causes my critical synapses to collapse leaving me in a giggling mess.

or maybe i'm just willing to overlook the obvious deficiencies because they're clearly there so that someone can break out into a song/dance (surprised quinn didn't get her own weepy ballad actually, after the baby/love triangle reveal).

Roz, Friday, 25 September 2009 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

A good barometer for whether someone will like this show: Does the thought of a bunch of football players doing the Single Ladies dance strike you as funny? And can you tolerate not one, but two female characters who lie about their pregnancies to keep their men?

I will no longer be watching Glee.

lindseykai, Friday, 25 September 2009 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure football players doing the Single Ladies dance is empirically funny.

xpost to Roz-- contrivances that completely disregard established characterization or require characters to be eye-rollingly dense = bad

mere "that would obviously never happen in real life" contrivances that result in great sequences like the football/ Single Ladies stuff = hooray!

angry virgins seeking validation (sciolism), Friday, 25 September 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, maybe I don't know the intricacies of football rules, but I guess I thought that with 1 second left to go on the clock, the ball would have to be in motion for time not to run out on them. They didn't even hike the ball before doing their dance; it just sat there on the line of scrimmage.

maybe it's just oversensitivity on my part, but Mr. Shue being all aggressive and grabby during the fake baby reveal really grossed me out. it made it harder to enjoy the treasure trove of terrible acting that the rest of the scene offered.

What is up with the principal...none of the characters are particularly well written but everything he does just seems to be out of left field. His purpose seems to only be to make life harder for Glee. Charge them for their yearbook photo, make their arch rival teacher their co-leader, it's a little too convenient.

Also, I want to see Rachel's dads.

musically, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 02:08 (sixteen years ago)

i never really knew any school principals who seemed to do anything other than walk around with walkie talkies and make announcements so it seems fine to me.

tehresa, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 05:41 (sixteen years ago)

like, they schmooze the pta and school board and sign stuff and are administrative but not particularly useful so it makes sense that his character is weird.

tehresa, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 05:42 (sixteen years ago)

it's not that he's not going out of his way to make glee successful, but that he continually undermines them in all kinds of ways without having any particular reason to do so. and the whole banning them from the yearbook and then charging them for an ad was just totally off base, especially for someone who insists that everyone play by the rules.

i liked the performance they did at Sectionals but why all the drama over picking new songs? surely they could've chosen from the several hundred other songs they inexplicably rehearsed for no apparent reason earlier in the season.

megalolz at the judges not understanding or giving a fuck about the competition, i once judged at a regional high school drama competition and they really did let any asshole who wanted fifty bucks do it.

i've been worrying about the backing members of the group- asian, black, wheelchair, questionable gender

really? i'm not going to give it the benefit of the doubt that that's a clever 'reference', because the rest of it didn't seem that clever tbh.

hmm. i'm being a bit harsh on it because i had to miss some decent tv while SO watched it, maybe- there were some nice ideas and some good asides, but the meat of it was so saccharine and 'what teenagers are like when adults aren't there' as envisioned by a 50 yr old nun that it spoiled any merit that minor characters bring to it- the cheerleading coach and the so-thin-she-isn't there teacher are both pretty good.

Not a reactionary git, just an idiot. (darraghmac), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 11:55 (sixteen years ago)

Really enjoyed this. Much funnier than I expected it to be, and Jane Lynch is awesome. The bloody songs as well, I am a sucker for musicals anyway but the takes on "Rehab" and "Don't Stop Believin'" were A+. Also, major lulz at the Principal's reverie during "Push It".

Bill A, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 11:56 (sixteen years ago)

I thought the show was pretty upfront about that whole "lol minority" thing.

What can I say? There were a bunch of songs I really love and some great performances thereof, a few v. funny zingers, an undertow of hopelessness that keeps promising to overwhelm the happy ending and resonates like crazy with me and enough moral ambiguity around the characters to promise some curve-balls to come.

Individualism, alcoholism, collectivism, activism (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 11:57 (sixteen years ago)

ryan murphy kind of seems more like an ideas man than an execution man to me, but on the other hand lea michele's performance of "don't rain on my parade" in the sectionals episode made me tear up. this show has flashes of brilliance but i also find myself wondering why do i even watch this show midway through a lot of the episodes. imo the thing ryan murphy is best at is creating characters like jane lynch's, that should be totally irredeemably awful, and humanizing them. i am not sure that is enough to hang a show on, but i am probably going to keep watching.

things that let this show down for me:

-evry body just spout their inner lives, like all the time so that it just seems out of sync w/ reality when ppl r keeping things to themselves eg JTs brother and the chinadollcareerguidancewoman.

-"numbers" seem so joyless and canned and the complete opposite of spontaneous and you cant really understand why anybody would put up with shit to be in such a boring club

-that tall guy that can't dance for shit

that said Quinn and Jane Lynch are so awesome, would watch spinoff where quinn tells jane lynch abt her life-lessons but delivers it all like not-so-subtle barbs and jane lynch has psyko-incomprehensible rebuttals.

yeah. i've never seen nip/tuck, but popular was like this too. ryan murphy's investment in character/plot/plausibility is weird. it pays off sometimes (like that amazing moment in the episode about rachel's crush on the teacher where the other girl who had a crush on him corners her in the bathroom and is like, "look we're both mildly attractive and really grating and life is going to be hard on us" or whatever) and sometimes it's just really stilted and kind of boring.

i said i liked popular but this has this annoying habit of switching gears into standard character motivation with no real roadmap for the logic of where and when they're b real for a second, its the lack of definition between when its just abt how zany they all are and the really real moments, confused/confusing imo, but not in a good way, more not really knowing what its aiming for.

eh that's a bit vehement, as is my habit.

the bits that are good are really good- jane lynch, the principal, the really hot lead girl, everyone's incredible occasional cynicism, but it just seems that the script has schizophrenic tendencies- dialogue is top notch but the plotlines redefined every ten minutes, which is a strange inconsistency

one month passes...

So I guess this starts again soon (Sept 21st) but I'm really not enthusiastic about it like I am about other shows airing next season. Particularly because the more I think about it, the more alienated I feel from the show's dramatic/emotional arcs. It's not a huge surprise that a teen soap opera would mostly feature, ya know, teen issues (teen pregnancy, popularity -- which while I imagine every human being worries about being liked by their friends and loved by their family, they never care about popularity as much as when they're in highschool -- being different, etc), but even the adults in the show are essentially children. Sue Sylvester is clearly an emotionally stunted human being who still takes way too much personal satisfaction in being the toughest/coolest/whoever around, the principle is constantly being bullied, and Shuster is really the worst of the bunch of them. He's basically regressed over the first season from being a husband + future father to trying to convince the local prude to have sex with him. The latter trope, while super familiar in teen soap operas, is being charted by the most major adult protagonist on the show (not to mention said prude has all kinds of issues that Freud would no doubt trace to childhood regression, particularly the anal stage of childhood sexual development). The only real adult on the show is Kurt's father who really seems to be dealing with adult issues (how to be a father to his own son and this other woman's fatherless son, how to be in an adult relationship, how to deal with repressed grief and a war that's never explicitly acknowledged within the show but is constantly clearly going on in the background).

Anyway, and here's the weird nexus that the show takes place in; It's about freaks, but it's an incredibly popular critically acclaimed show that -- compared to other sitcoms like Party Down or even Community -- feels more like an insider than an outsider. And it's ostensibly an adult take on the teen soap opera (how else to read the Gawker-reader snark and pop culture obsessiveness) that never deals with issues that feel, ya know, adult. So it's hard to get excited. (Meanwhile I can't wait for the Dexter season premiere.)
