Mike Myers: Classic or Dud

With this *third* Powers outing he is surely taking the piss, isn't he?

Dr Evil = Classic. Austin Powers character = Dud.

He'll never touch the dizzy heights of those Wayne's World sketches on SNL ever again, sigh.

Venga, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New "the new Peter Sellers" answers.

Venga, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, what about "Sprockets"? that was the pinnacle of his career! serious!

geeta, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

VELCOME TO SHPROCKETS. Mike Myers is fantastic. Going to see "Gold member" tonite. Shall report back. Didn't really like the last one though it had some great jokes all the same.

Michael Bourke, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Friend of mine swears by So I Married An Axe Murderer and sez that its failure commercially meant he'll never achieve those heights again.

Remember that this is the man who said he would not do a Sprockets film because the script 'wasn't good enough.' Now think about what he has done elsewhere.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike Myers is not all that hes just ok. Sprockets were never REALLY good nad Waynes World was all about Dana Carvey

Chupa-Cabras, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he's quite funny. I liked Wayne's World and Austin Powers is amusing.

A spinchter says what?

jel --, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't approve of his ways. Charming at times, but never "good". Fluffy dumps was awful.

Chief White Lotus, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Spheeris Wayne's World is perfect. Everything else he's done is spotty but always has at least four or five gags that I find really amusing. Oh, and the whole Evil family is awesome.

adam, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Funny enough for me, with the caveat that his funniest creation, Dr. Evil, is apparently lifted from Dana Carvey's impersonation of Lorne Michaels. His scatological humor is better than the Farrelly Bros., not as good as the South Park guys.

J Blount, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And like too many comedians, he practically screams "Love ME!"

J Blount, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's alright - best on SNL, obviously. Main difference between him and his apparent role model Sellers is that Myers wants to be liked (or is just naturally likable), while Sellers's characters could be downright repellent.

Justyn Dillingham, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not the new Peter Sellers. He isn't even in that calibre. Compared to Adam Sandler, he's great. But he's not a genius.

bryan, Sunday, 28 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I never got around to seeing Goldmember and I'm finally watching it now. I thought it would be way too meta-meta-meta for me but it's apparently just meta-meta-meta enough to be really hilarious.

stockholm cindy, montessori emo superstar (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't help but like it, even though parts of it are really pretty bad.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked it a lot better than the second Austin Powers movie, that's for sure.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh I couldn't watch it, it was so bad.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was about 12, and he was on SNL, I told a girl in my class who I had a crush on that he was my cousin. I saw her again a few years ago, and she asked me if I still talked to him. At first I didn't know what she was talking about, and then a wave of shame hit. I still didn't cop to making the whole thing up, though. I'm like the XTC of Shame.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

classic for his comments re: hip hop and the the vapidness of lowbrow/highbrow distinctions on Inside the Actor's Studio, always being a hilarious interview in general, and other stuff

tremendoid, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't hate on a Leafs fan.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Goldmember is classic for the Goldmember character alone. if I were Dutch I'd be furious.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wish So I Married An Axe Murderer hadn't flopped (it has nice moments). I wish he didn't feel the need to think up one shtick, run it into the ground and then think up another and run that into the ground.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ant that is EXACTLY why I thought you would LOVE mike myers. how is that different from other stuff you* like BECAUSE they have one shtick and run it into the ground?

*you, yes, but me too and all of us

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

who do I love that only has one shtick? I'm tempted to offer Ben Stiller but he's done a wider variety of characters, even if many draw from the same well.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

also Mike Myers is way more "LOVE ME!" (as Blount says) than Stiller. Myers comes from the school of refusing to stop saying your catchphrase until the last possible laugh has been grabbed.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Matt was referring more to your beloved musical (rather than comedic) one trick ponies, i.e. Durst. (ok so comedic too)

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on; Durst likes Joy Division!

stockholm cindy, montessori emo superstar (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Durst is a fuckin' cornucopia of wtf compared to Cibula. Part of his appeal is his unpredictability!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

WOOPS! compared to Myers. hee hee.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

haha great slip. but yeah, point taken.

the failure of SIMAAM definitely seems to have scarred him enough to insure that he'll never try a comedic role without a wig and an improbably wacky premise ever again. I mean he's clearly capable of coming up with more hit characters than to necessitate milking each for 2 or 3 movies, as evidenced by the SNL years, but I'm sure also SNL also instilled in him the value of milking the same gag over and over. I loved Sprockets but can you imagine how sad and saggy a movie of that 10 years too late would've been?

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yes!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Dieter don't play dat!

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

He's the man Dana Carvey might have been.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

He may have been my favorite SNL cast member when I was in junior high. (Actually, I guess I also liked Hartman, too, but for different reasons.) But I haven't seen any of his movies since So I Married an Axe Murderer.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely utterly classic Pre Powers, Wayne's World 2 is still one of my favourite movies.
His best of SNL is the freaken greatest. The Hyper Hypo sketch is beyond classic.
His father character in SIMAAM is one of the funniest freaken things ever.
Powers is kind of dull and he recycles a lot of jokes, i.e. In AP3 he recycles the forever classic 'What would be wrong with that weird eye' sketch with that 'Mole' scene.
However 'Who throws a shoe' still ruined the movie Lantana for me.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 16 September 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

He's got some funny ideas, but the Austin Powers films (well, the two I've seen) are horribly self-indulgent.

If you like the midget jokes in the trailer, I'm guessing there are plenty more where those came from.

the trailer makes it sound like mike myers couldn't decided whether to go with a comedy indian accent or not

I bet that *ding* smile sound gets way triing.

Never thought midgets were all that funny or anything. I never understood why "Terror of Tiny Town" was always #1 in the "ultimate most awful craziest cult movies you've never seen" books. Not that I've seen it, but really.

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

i saw a photo of timberlake as sexay quebecois in some kungfu stance and thought 'o man that looks funny' but man this does not look funny at all.

I never understood why "Terror of Tiny Town" was always #1 in the "ultimate most awful craziest cult movies you've never seen" books.

It's not that (bad) great, but it does have a certain dedication to its premise that carries it off. Whatever that means, now that I look at what I wrote.

I assumed that he'd be in some sort of awful brownface makeup for this movie, when I finally saw the trailer and he wasn't, I honestly wasn't sure if I was relieved or disappointed.

I think Myers' goal in his film career is to remind us of Peter Sellers at his worst.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 6 June 2008 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Pitka's potential ticket to fame comes from the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jane (Jessica Alba), who is struggling with a star player (Romany Malco) emotionally wounded by a bad marital rift. Hoping to salvage the team's chances of winning the Stanley Cup Finals, she retains Pitka to cure the case of the yips the player's developed -- brought about, seemingly, by his wife's rebound relationship with the enormously endowed Jacques "Le Coq" Grande (Justin Timberlake).

waitwaitwaitwaitwait --- the name of Timberlake's character in this movie is LE COQ?

some dude, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

I name everything Le Coq!

Abbott, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

The Canadian Press

Review: Mike Myers comedy 'The Love Guru' lame self-help romp

In "The Love Guru," Mike Myers must come to love himself before he can love others. From the credits of this scattershot comedy sketch stretched and strained to movie length, Myers clearly loved himself to the point of narcissism going in.

Besides starring, Myers is a producer and co-writer. He's in the cast list four times - three times for the same character (Guru Pitka, Young Pitka and Teenage Pitka) and for a two-second cameo as himself.

The song credits feature three tunes performed by Myers, among them Eastern-inflected and mystically bad versions of Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" and Steve Miller's "The Joker."

And Myers mercilessly inflicts some of his favourite things on the audience - his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs and Verne Troyer, the tiny actor who played Mini-Me in two of the "Austin Powers" flicks.

Self-love does not seem to be an issue for Myers, unlike Pitka, the world's second-best guru, who carries a chip on his shoulder from growing up in the shadow of top-seeded rival Deepak Chopra (who makes a brief appearance in "The Love Guru").

Looking like a cross between Beatles guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and Charles Manson, Pitka seems to have it all: A popular self-help regimen, a lush L.A. ashram with celebrity fawners, even his own spiritual greeting, "Mariska Hargitay." It's cute at first but wears thin by the 20th or 30th time Pitka and his followers appropriate the "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" actress' name.

The orphan Pitka was raised along with Chopra by the cross-eyed Indian Guru Tugginmypuddha (Ben Kingsley, who's a long, long way from "Gandhi" here).

The teenage Pitka is put into a chastity belt until he can learn to love himself. For all his success counselling others on romance, the adult Pitka still has his privates encased in the metal contraption.

Enter Jessica Alba. She's Jane Bullard, the owner of the Maple Leafs (yeah, right), and her star player, Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco), has hit a slump just as the team has a shot at winning its first Stanley Cup in 40 years.

Darren's lovesick because his wife has taken up with well-endowed Jacques (Le Coq) Grande (Justin Timberlake), the goalie for the L.A. Kings, the Leafs' rivals in the finals.

So Jane engages Pitka to smooth things over between Darren and his wife. Of course, Jane herself falls for Myers' hoary Pitka (yeah, right), forcing the love guru to resolve his own inner conflicts.

Myers spent years honing Pitka, the first original character he has dreamed up in more than a decade, since the first "Austin Powers" movie arrived. Even putting all that time in on Pitka, Myers, co-writer Graham Gordy and first-time director Marco Schnabel (filmmaker Jay Roach's aide on the "Austin Powers" movies) come up with only a few real laughs.

Most of the gags are half-hearted, many puzzling and unfunny lines delivered by Myers with his trademark sly stare into the camera, as though waiting for fans to guffaw. He may have a long wait.

Myers pushes the PG-13 rating with the movie's bawdy language, coarse images and scatological humour involving such things as elephant dung and a fight with urine-soaked mops.

The first half of "The Love Guru" meanders drearily, but the climax packs a few chuckles. Otherwise an irritant as the Leafs' crusty coach, Troyer is the subject of an amusing slapstick moment near the finale.

With thick '70s-style hair and moustache, an outrageous French-Canadian accent and undying devotion to Celine Dion, Timberlake goofs it up and occasionally enlivens the movie.

Given nothing remotely challenging to do, Alba comes off as bland and hollow.

Obviously having fun playing Pitka, Myers' earnestness makes some lines seem funnier than they are. But his zeal cannot save most of the empty jokes from landing with a deadly thud.

Self-referential - or self-reverential - moments also include a snippet where a car radio briefly tunes in Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," Myers undergoing a fleeting flashback to "Wayne's World," when he and Dana Carvey led a group sing-along to the song.

Myers wants us all to love him, wants us all to be in on his jokes. But love and laughs are earned, not given just because you mug for the camera behind a wild wig and beard.

One and a half stars out of four.

NY Times:
“The Love Guru” is downright antifunny, an experience that makes you wonder if you will ever laugh again.

Eazy, Friday, 20 June 2008 05:39 (seventeen years ago)

this looks painful, but his snl 'best-of' special earlier this week was generally pretty good, even the 'new' bits with the new cast (where they made fun of the fact that ll of his characters were scottish)

akm, Friday, 20 June 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

I have NOT seen it so rating is only based on being an extra in it

The article said "The rule seems to be that no one may upstage him and all must adore him." That is 100% true. We were not allowed to stand too close to him during a break in case we heard what he said. He could never remember his lines and some scenes were shot 50 times. When he was on the elephant on the ice we felt so sorry for the poor animal (both were female) that many people hoped he would be dumped and stepped on. Being in an ice rink from 7AM until 2AM is COLD.

More NYT:
"it’s not that I object to the idea of, say, witnessing elephants copulate on the ice in the middle of a Stanley Cup hockey match, or seeing a dwarf sent flying over the same ice by the shock of defibrillator paddles. But it will never be enough simply to do such things.
They must be done well."

There's a wayne's world tie-in book co-authored by Myers and his wife that seems to have an amazing amount of effort poured into it for a commercial movie tie-in, as if this were their true outlet for comedic expression.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

god i actually want to read that now

some dude, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

i'm probably overselling it, but there was a line in it about how the transgressive nature of a lady in a baseball uniform counterintuitively accentuates her feminine qualities that seemed a cut above usual movie tie-in cash grab lit

"In the case of, say, Nixon, who is an interesting villain, if he loved himself more, he wouldn’t have felt it necessary to cheat. "

I think I could enjoy a movie wherein Mike Meyers uses some funny magic powers and Janovian scream therapy to help Nixon love himself and make Watergate never happen & pull out of Vietnam.

two years pass...

a Mike Myers tv comedy could be really refreshing if he played the right kind of character and, of course, if it was well made. His style/persona is so unlike the Apatow/modern improv comedy types that dominate right now. Like in "So I Married an Axe Murderer" he played a down-to-earth, sympathetic and funny guy really effortlessly.

And yeah I know he's made "The Love Guru" and other mistakes, but we can forgive.

Cunga, Sunday, 20 January 2013 04:37 (thirteen years ago)

You're right. He did do that in ...Axe Murderer. And then he abandoned it completely for the remainder of his career, Nick Cage style.

(hcnuL dlO) * (Old Lunch), Sunday, 20 January 2013 06:26 (thirteen years ago)

That would make a good thread: acting personas actors carried early in their career, that they would foolishly abandon 4ever

three weeks pass...

i watched the love guru on friday. maybe it's all the build-up and hype around it being the worst film in years, but it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. it wasn't good, either, and the endless string of fart/knob/piss jokes was not my thing (as i imagine it wasn't very many people's thing), but i had expected wiseau-grade production values, sloppy editing etc. it was merely boring and racist.

anyway, apparently myers is doing austin powers 4 and

if he times it right he'll have Austin Powers 4 come out right when 90s nostalgia hits the mid and late-90s and there's an actual demand for this.

Cunga, Saturday, 16 February 2013 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

eight years pass...

Same point as a couple of people above: just watched So I Married an Axe Murderer for the first time, and it's amazing how genial and normal Mike Myers is, before he got completely overtaken by all the Austin Powers schtick (some it funny, yes). The last 10 minutes gets a little slapsticky, but the rest was quite good. So many well-known people--even Michael Richards a couple of years into Seinfeld. I just love Nancy Travis. She starts out at the same time as Julia Roberts: one becomes the most famous actress in the world, the other keeps working but seems to take a step back from big roles.

In my SNL blog reading adventures the past couple weeks, one of my Wilder discoveries is that Myers had planned to leave SNL a year earlier than he did, but stayed on because his COFFEE TALK MOVIE was cancelled during pre-production.

I knew he tried to do a Sprockets movie (I've even read the script!), but WOW at trying to extend Coffee Talk to 80-90 minutes.

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 15 November 2021 17:30 (four years ago)

Mike Myers plays a drug dealer living in the slums of Dublin. He tries to financially provide for the three children of his dead brother. The children's lives are forever changed when a meteor crashes into their backyard. Alfred Molina plays a wealthy scientist that the children must confront to retrieve their heaven sent gift.

somebody made this up, right?

was wondering about this guy since I saw him in the Sparks documentary but unfortunately the only thing that ever comes to mind with him anymore is the Clickhole quote

frogbs, Monday, 15 November 2021 19:45 (four years ago)

I liked the beatnik poetry too. Alan Arkin was really good. When he was chewing out Anthony LaPaglia, you knew what was going on, but they managed not to ruin the joke by letting him leave the room and come back in. (They did repeat the joke within a couple of minutes--that was unnecessary.) The guy who shared that scene with Michael Richards, he was Seinfeld too--I think he was the guy who bought Morty's executive raincoats.

i watched it about 5 years ago because my then 8th grader son loved it and begged me to watch it with him. it is one of the more perfect 8th grade boy movies, tis sadly true. impressive in its vulgar and juvenile persistence. me: "surely they're not gonna have the elephants...well, of course they did." colbert AND john oliver were notable surprises.
