When, during an "I don't want to date you anymore" dinner, do you tell the person that you don't want to date them anymore but you do truly want to be friends? Before during or after

Stevie D(eux), Friday, 11 October 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

I had two of those meals in a row and lost my nerve. It must be done at the end of a non-eating date as you're dropping them off.

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Friday, 11 October 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)

Yeah food has no place in that sort of thing. Waste of food tbh, it's not like it'll taste nice in those circumstances

lex pretend, Friday, 11 October 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)

i once broke it off with an ex after a dinner date. i had planned on doing it that way because i sure as hell didn't want to discuss it at the actual restaurant, but i felt so sick about it that i was pretty much miserable and silent throughout the meal and hardly touched my food

Rothko's Chicken and Waffles (donna rouge), Friday, 11 October 2013 19:06 (twelve years ago)

Dinner dates are a ritual of domesticity so it's kind of cruel to plan to break up during one, imo

Breaking up over e-mail/text message is highly underrated.

you and me against the board (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 11 October 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

If I'm taking a lover I'm going to consign to friend out to dinner, I'm not going to tell him during a good dinner that I'm consigning him to friendship. Since presumably I wouldn't go through the trouble of doing this with a boyfriend but only with a trick who didn't work out, I'll do it over the phone.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 October 2013 19:39 (twelve years ago)

THANKS EVERYONE FOR TELLING ME HOW WRONG I WAS UGH

He acted nice about it but I could tell he was kind of frustrated that it took me two weeks of like reciprocating his flirtiness to realize I no longer wanted to. We were walking and I told him I still rly wanted to be pals for real and he was kind of like "we can try but I don't think that'll work out" and then was v abruptly all OKAY I'M GONNA GO THIS WAY, SEE YA

i got invited to some sort of mock prom thing tomorrow by this super flirty guy i know. then later in the conversation, he mentions he has a girlfriend. crossed wires maybe, but i don't know if he expected for me to come alone with him and his gf or what. guess i'll just come up with some excuse. drunk & kinda bummed.

You're a little bit Metro...: Although it's clear you're not gay, you still have an air of faggotry around you. No one ever really questions your sexuality, but they wouldn't be suprosed if they saw you with Mitch or Moe.

Had a v gay evening otherwise with ex-friend-now-friends-again Joel Gibb and we lay on a couch and talked about the times we did drugs and had sex with women. Guys I am having weird boy drama right now (months-long string of unsuccessful first dates, weird rejections, general timidness and inability to "make the first move", a sense of bitter competitiveness with friends who appear more successful with less effort, general feelings of inadequacy and not being attractive or outgoing or desirable enough, etc.). Last night for instance I met up with this guy I've been talking to for a few weeks; conversation was really awkward and stunted at first but I stuck with it and we eventually kinda hit it off and hung out for like 4 hours. I invited him back to my apt, and he said yes, and then on the walk to the trolley we realize he was just over my apt Tuesday to hook up with my roommate (which he said was fun), and we laughed about it but then I spent the whole trolley ride home feeling weird and envious and stuff bcz rmm8 seems to be able to find people to bring home with ease and it is like impossible for me, and then we get to my apt bldg and I go up the steps and he just stands there and then says "Hey, I'm having a weird feeling about this, I think I'm just gonna go back home" (which was like 5 blocks and also he did not ask if I wanted to join), which was kinda crushing after the triumph of like "you did it and were forward and came out of yr shell and risked rejection and it was successful!" and then like "lol j/k false alarm you still don't got it!" or w/e

I know a lot of this is in my head but someone tell me happy and reaffirming things plz

Grindr's CEO is a fucking tool. Besides the self-serving crap (which I skimmed tbh) about the app making the world safe for gays, there's this

And to those critics who say Grindr is superficial and reduces gay men to physical ideals, he responded with a smile.

“Fanstastic! I love it. Absolutely. Look good. I’m very proud if Grindr has forced us to up up our game. To brush our teeth. Comb our hair. Eat right. Go to the gym. Be a healthy person. Cut back on the smoking. Cut back on the bad things and look your best. We’re men. We visualize. We see before we hear, before we think, before we do anything else. That’s how we are. I haven’t changed that. That’s what our evolution has taught us to do. I certainly go to the gym more because of Grindr. I’m competing with the guy a space away from me on that grid.”

a fifth of misty beethoven (cryptosicko), Monday, 2 December 2013 06:20 (twelve years ago)

I may be off the mark here but I think that it's looking at a piece of lit through a queer lens? The "-ing" part makes me think that it's also applied to lit that isn't traditionally thought to have a queer perspective.

I dunno, I'm probably wrong on all this (and I have an English degree too).

Murgatroid, Monday, 2 December 2013 06:41 (twelve years ago)

calling "a tune is space" to thread now

Murgatroid, Monday, 2 December 2013 06:41 (twelve years ago)

Murgatroid, you are OTM.

The fun (and also sorta maddening, because maybe it becomes meaningless) thing about the word "queer" is that for some people it indicates:

Definition 1: gay / lesbian / bi / trans / questioning sexualities, sexual cultures, bodies, pleasures and communities

and for some people it indicates:

Definition 2: that which conceptually resists legibility, norms, or identification as such

so you could "queer" a text by either hunting in a text for characters, activities, bodies or pleasures that look Queer according to Definition 1 (i.e. possibly gay or lesbian people / acts / doings) or you could "queer" a text by looking for that within the text which seems to violate its own codes, enabling assumptions, or norms. There's an on-again, off-again, sometimes bitter battle in queer theory about whether to go with Def. 1 or Def. 2. The latest salvo was Valerie Traub's essay "The New Unhistoricism in Queer Studies" in the PMLA.

I could go on . . .

the tune was space, Monday, 2 December 2013 06:57 (twelve years ago)

Seems like it's MUCH easier to queer a text via the second def. than the first. With the first def, I can see things becoming, uhh, problematic whereas with the second definition, you're only looking at the text alone and not bringing anything into it.

And thank you Murgatroid as well. This is basically the definition I was looking for but could not actually find put into words (anyone who discusses "queering" seems to assume--reasonably?--that the reader already knows what it means).

a fifth of misty beethoven (cryptosicko), Monday, 2 December 2013 17:36 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I think you're right crypto that people just deploy it as a verb form without clarifying that gesture. From memory, the first book that I saw to use this formulation was Jonathan Goldberg's edited collection "Queering the Renaissance", and the title kind of performs some work by implication- the Renaissance is a high cultural thing that is going to be made "queer" through reading practices that will help us to see that there are available moments of queerness even in a historical period supposedly antecedent to the 19th century sexological constructions of "homosexuality" as an identity and "heterosexuality" as a back formation from that. In practice, most work in premodern sexuality studies can be split into camps along the lines proposed by the Definition Question above, though there are also people who straddle (queer?) the line itself. I'm in an anthology called, uh, "Shakesqueer" that does the same work of both showing-the-past-to-be-already-queer and making-the-past-queer-with-presentist-reading-practices. So I'm pretty familiar with this kind of historiographic handwringing about termminology.

thoughts on bud
1. bud seems faintly homosexual in a long-time-ago, recalling-pubescence kind of way
2. bro replaced bud because incest taboo makes it easier to protect masculinity from the danger of loving men (trying to phrase this in a way that underlines how it's fucked up)
3. having only encountered "bud" in the online gaysex profiles of older-than-30 men ten years ago, i feel like it has an outmoded, kinda bittersweet air to it.
4. who says 'bud' now?
5. who said 'bud' when it was a thing?

I'd almost settle for porn featuring black dudes where they at least took their athletic socks off.

The Reverend, Friday, 27 December 2013 18:15 (twelve years ago)

I like athletic socks!

Seriously, though, one of the more disturbing trends I've noticed in my probably-not-THAT-limited samplings is that gay porn starting black dudes is almost always bareback. Twink porn too (which I don't really watch), but I suspect that this is for different, though no less disturbing, reasons.

a fifth of misty beethoven (cryptosicko), Friday, 27 December 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

I've noticed that most porn of ALL categories that I run into on Tumblr and -tube sites is bareback. I haven't paid much attention to the breakdown within the categories though.

gay one

queen bey backers (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 29 December 2013 03:23 (twelve years ago)

I think it's because i'm completely not used to seeing these types of people on screen, like people that I see specific parts of myself in or relate to in a lot of ways that I never, ever see outside of the real-life instances in which these moments occur. Basically it's making me feel types of things that films never, ever make me feel, and they're not intrinsically good or bad but they're strange because they're so unusual

queen bey backers (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 29 December 2013 03:25 (twelve years ago)

That's how I responded too. It was hard setting the affective fallacy aside for this one.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 December 2013 03:28 (twelve years ago)

There was a period of my life where if I saw this movie I would flip the fuck out and it would instantly become the most meaningful and most favorite film but now it just makes me feel a kind of strange mild nervousness or discomfort, though I do acknowledge that, biases aside, it's a pretty great film. I can't tell if I actually like it or not because there are parts of me that really do, or really want to, and other parts of me that are kind of terrified of it or make me want to hate it for reasons I can't quite discern.

queen bey backers (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 29 December 2013 03:35 (twelve years ago)
