Can’t think of anyone who embodies this more than Radiohead, but I am sure there are other examples there. Open to suggestions

re Radiohead, they only do this on a technicality really? I guess there might be some disagreement but personally I think an EP is an (extended) single (and counted as one for the UK charts), so Creep is their second single, and was only a hit after it was reissued, by which time they'd also released Anyone Can Play Guitar

Van Morrison?

In 2011, "Brown Eyed Girl" was honoured for having 10 million US radio air plays; it was one of only ten songs registered with BMI to have received that number of radio plays.[21] As of 2015, "Brown Eyed Girl" remains the most downloaded and most played song of the entire 1960s decade.[22]

Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 26 February 2026 15:34 (three months ago)

Not really, it only reached no. 38 in the UK singles chart. God Save The Queen famously stalled at no. 2 and every other single up to 1979 (except for The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle) went top 10.

Not sure the Sex Pistols had a lengthy career where recordings are concerned.

Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 26 February 2026 15:53 (three months ago)

At least in the US, Robyn would count here. "(Do You Know) What It Takes" was her first US single and, by Hot 100 stats (#7 peak, #29 year-end), was her biggest hit. Follow-up "Show Me Love" has nearly identical Hot 100 stats, too. But those are her only two Hot 100 hits in the US.

jon_oh, Thursday, 26 February 2026 19:47 (three months ago)

"Lucky Man" is still the song ELP is known for but its fair to say it's not really representative of the band's sound or what their fans really like about them. bonus points since it might actually be the first song Lake ever wrote period

I have to think single means song in this context cuz it's weird to think of Radiohead's first as "Prove Yourself" even if it's the first track on a UK singles chart #101 and got played on the radio once or twice? Apparently. Always thought of "Drill" as an EP in the mini album sense, with Creep as their first single (available in EP and single formats)

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 27 February 2026 02:08 (three months ago)

First single as in first specific song with any market push. Even if it's out of a band's trunk.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 27 February 2026 02:14 (three months ago)

Radiohead is an odd one, "Creep" catno is R6078, whereas the Drill ep is R6312 which would suggest that Creep came out earlier (Parlophone not being Factory in its numbering schema)

Obviously, release dates show different.

Mark G, Friday, 27 February 2026 02:47 (three months ago)

Pretty sure Careless Whisper is still George Michael's biggest solo single if we're not including Wham.

Kim Wilde might count. I think Kids In America is still her biggest selling single despite her cover of You Keep Me Hanging On also getting to number two. It's certainly her most well known song.

In the UK, Sade would certainly count. Amazingly, Your Love Is King is their only top ten hit.

I was going to suggest Bauhaus. But they only lasted for five years, and "Bela Lugosi's Dead" didn't chart. Their most popular single was a cover of "Ziggy Stardust" from much later in their career. So no, Bauhaus is not the answer to this particular question.

Enya isn't a band, and "Orinoco Flow" wasn't her first single. Future Sound of London's "Papua New Guinea" was technically their third single, and it was out-charted by "We Have Explosive". Boston's "More Than a Feeling", their debut single, surprisingly wasn't their highest-charting hit.

Pink Floyd's odd status as a singles band that became an album band that had a freak #1 means that although "Arnold Layne" was a hit, it was nowhere near as hitty as "Another Brick in the Wall II". They are the only musicians I know.

Purely in terms of US chart positions numbers Mike Oldfield's 45rpm version of "Tubular Bells" was both his first single and literally his only charting single in the US, but he went on to have other hits elsewhere in the world, and technically it wasn't even made by him, it was edited together by the record label.

Ashley Pomeroy, Saturday, 28 February 2026 18:50 (three months ago)

Arguably Tracy Chapman. “Give Me One Reason” charted higher but “Fast Car” has 3 times as many Spotify streams.

it's true the Declaration of Independence is still our highest-charting hit, on the other hand blue jeans have gone on to be our "legacy song" and biggest iTunes seller

Pizza is big too but that’s a cover so it don’t count

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 1 March 2026 03:08 (three months ago)

Pearl Jam?

in what way

I don't know if it had the most sales of the "Ten" singles, but "Alive" is pretty much their signature/legacy song, right? Or are we counting Temple of the Dog as earlier work?

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 March 2026 16:29 (three months ago)

Not a chart hit.

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 March 2026 16:38 (three months ago)

Spotify suggests that "Even Flow" is their most popular song ("Alive" being #2).

Kim Kimberly, Sunday, 1 March 2026 16:46 (three months ago)

That one’s a bit weird. I hear Alive and Jeremy on the radio pretty often but almost never hear Evenflow.

Who's going to stop 200 balloons? Nobody! (President Keyes), Sunday, 1 March 2026 17:08 (three months ago)

Last Kiss also technically their highest chart peak. I think they're more typical of a big longstanding rock band where there really isn't one single obvious "biggest hit." I think we've also explored this in songs that weren't a bands biggest hit, but have gone on to be their legacy song and biggest iTunes seller.

Hiphoptimus Rhyme (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 1 March 2026 17:22 (three months ago)

Those songs from Ten were huge MTV hits, which didn’t always translate to the charts.

…don’t see …

that's not my post, Sunday, 1 March 2026 17:54 (three months ago)

It seems that she released earlier singles, among which:

Also in 1970, Carole King herself recorded "Up on the Roof" for her solo recording debut Writer, from which it was issued as a single.

Kim Kimberly, Sunday, 1 March 2026 18:02 (three months ago)

“even flow” is a big song on tiktok

The Breeders - no singles from Pod, Safari is an EP so “Cannonball” is their first and biggest.

Who's going to stop 200 balloons? Nobody! (President Keyes), Sunday, 1 March 2026 19:31 (three months ago)

The 80s incarnation had some modest hits which charted higher than the early stuff.

Carole King started releasing singles in the late '50s. Her first charting (top 100) single was "It Might as Well Rain Until September" from 1962

Cattedrale metropolitana di Santa Maria de Episcopio, Sunday, 1 March 2026 20:56 (three months ago)

Counting Crows are mentioned in passing upthread but I’d like to highlight them, I think they definitely qualify. Mr. Jones seems to definitively be their first single, and its only competitor s as their biggest hit is their dire Big Yellow Taxi cover, but I refuse to believe that’s bigger than Mr. Jones

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 1 March 2026 21:15 (three months ago)

i remember when "hanginaround" was inescapable but yeah mr. jones is bigger

c u (crüt), Sunday, 1 March 2026 21:17 (three months ago)

luther vandross?

if we're going strictly by the billboard hot 100, he would unquestionably go on to have bigger hits than "never too much." but if we're going by the billboard r&b chart, which is where both luther and his audience lived, he basically peaked at the very start with that amazing, chart-topping first single from his first album. (also, this means not counting the handful of singles his first group, "luther," released in the 1970s before he broke up the group and signed his solo deal. which i believe is the correct thing to do!)

fact checking cuz, Monday, 2 March 2026 06:01 (three months ago)

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Monday, 2 March 2026 22:01 (three months ago)

ADIP definitely had the higher chart placing in the US, but ITAT has totally outsold it... ADIP was Gold, ITAT is 3 x Platinum

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Monday, 2 March 2026 22:03 (three months ago)

You gotta factor streaming. "Another Day in Paradise" went 500,000 gold cert with cassingles and CD singles. "In the Air Tonight" got to 3X platinum on downloads (legit) and streams (a little less legit for "actual" sales).

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 March 2026 22:24 (three months ago)

ITAT also has Pop Culture cachet: the Miami Vice premiere; The Hangover; the whole urban legend about its inspiration...

- if the first single is an EP and was a hit then it does count

but it doesn't seem like that's the consensus

as you noted, the OP with the Radiohead username who reactivated after two posts in the last six years to pose this question had to claim that EMI is a tiny indie, unlike EMI, as the only reason to exclude EPs, in order to justify their sole pick of Radiohead as fitting the premise

so

yeah but it was called “the Safari EP” from day 1, and the title track is track 3. When Cannonball arrived I thought whoa, the Breeders put out a single?

Cold Chisel may not be particularly well known on ILM but first single "Khe Sanh" is likely their biggest hit by most measures. Certainly their most streamed song on Spotify. (They apparently get a million+ streams per month on that platform and have arguably had a very "lengthy and respected career" in their own region.)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 23:50 (three months ago)

I thought of the Doors too, but would you really call that a lengthy career?

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Wednesday, 4 March 2026 01:43 (three months ago)

N!N!N! I think I'm gonna have to dq you on that one. "Khe Sanh" is among their most beloved (and top Spotify yes) but charted at 41, their Wikipedia discography shows *thirteen* singles which charted higher, including #4 for "Forever Now".

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 4 March 2026 02:29 (three months ago)

I was going to suggest Neneh Cherry as Buffalo Stance is her biggest solo hit, but looking into it her duet with Youssou N'Dour actually outsold it. I'm guessing Buffalo Stance has overtaken that now in the streaming era.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 4 March 2026 02:33 (three months ago)

arguably had a very "lengthy and respected career" in their own region.

Six years and two months from the first single to the cinema release of the concert film of their farewell gigs, seven months prior.

Khe Sanh an intersting case though inasmuch as it was banned from commercial radio for being too offensive at the time, but canonised by classic rock radio in the ‘80s probably because it didn’t rock too hard —> Spotify stats downstream from that for sure

^ They kept reconvening again later though. And the later LPs seem to find an audience every time.

The utility of chart peaks is something I ponder every time such questions come up. I wish total sales volumes were as consistently, um, lookup-able as peak chart positions. I'm not sure these solitary data points from almost 5 decades ago tell us much about consumer behaviour beyond that one week.

Interestingly I see that that Wikipedia entry *does* include NZ volume data up to December '25: taking that at face value, it's the only triple-platinum single noted in that territory lol. Nothing else exceeds platinum. Though I assume that too includes digital.

Reunion tours every time _____ ______ ran out of money from paying heavies to threaten off ppl who’d witnessed someone getting beaten bloody fourteen years doesn’t really count as a sustained career imo. and even though three of the reunion albums sold over 30k, I bet all four of them added together got played fewer times than the first Tex, Don & Charlie CD alone.

Ha, the year-end charts for the reconvening LPs tell a tale:

2 peak, 76 year
2 peak, 47 year
1 debut, 97 year
