Whoever gets the question right asks the next question!

1) Name a song that Dave Matthews and Slint have both played.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"Cortez the Killer"?

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't use Google, I don't need to.

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I figured you would have known. But I mean for future posters here.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, here's my question: who wrote this rhyme and when was it written?

I got this rhyme that's more than real
When you drink Olde English here's how you feel
You reach in the freezer for a forty-ounce
Or a 32-ounce - whichever counts
Then you feel each bottle for the one that's cold
It's gotta be cold when you're drinking Olde Gold
But you might take the one that's hot
Said you gotta get it hot - that's all they got
A dollar fifty-five that is the price
That's too much if you wanna get nice
You pay your money, walk out the door
And say to yourself you'll remember that store
You look around for a place to stand
With a quart of Olde English inside your hand
Crack the quart, put it to your lip
You tilt it slightly and take a sip
Now by now you should know the deal
Cause that one sip you already feel!

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

is that the Wu Tang Olde English radio(?) advert from about 94/95?

michael (michael), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

nope.

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah. it was for St Ides not Olde English...

michael (michael), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

My first guess would be Ol' Dirty.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom Green?

Horace Mann, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

No one's been close yet, but the answers are highly amusing.

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Billy Dee Williams
It's obviously someone who is NOT a f/t rapper

Horace Mann, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

So who did it then, the Rappin' Granny? Charo? Warren Beatty?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YOU wrote it, just now.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I am so dissapointed! It was written by a rapper!

You people are whack-ass know-nothing fools! I'd like to see some of our "hip-hop headz" get this one! C'mon! So weak!

(I'm really hoping Nate Patrin will win this one, if only so CoFlow hataz will step off his shit {I've no opinion on CoFlow, btw}.)

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Wrong-o, Sean.

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit. Ice Cube noted that St. Ives malt liquor makes the jimmy quicker, but who the fuck did this one? Argghhhh....

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Hint: It was not a paid endorsement.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I cheated too. I wasn't going to cop to it. But whatev. I have SOME ethics.

Horace Mann, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Winslow (winslow), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe this. Really, should I berate you fools some more, or should I be declared KING OF THIS THREAD?

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

who said you'd be able to answer OUR questions, hstencil?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I already answered one first, and no one's answered mine, so it looks like I OWNZ YOU! AND THIS THREAD TOO, BIZZITCH!

(y'know I'm joking of course.)

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

well post the fuckin answer already! I am retarded and can't figure out how to get it from Google.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

If it turns out to be some undie-shit Ima call hstencil out on his "Oh, I am so dissapointed! It was written by a rapper!" shtick.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

this thread is disgusting on rather too many levels

rr, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

First, "step off" rr. Nothing more stupid than posting on a thread only to say you don't like it. Big deal.

Second, should I give out the answer?

Third, Sterl-y baby, this is NOT BY AN UNDIE RAPPER!

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Luther Campbell?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope.

Hint #3: It's by an East Coast rapper.

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

As soon as I posted that I realized it must be wrong... Run DMC, then.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike D(iamond)?

Aaron A., Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Yancey wins (from Tougher than Leather: The Rise of Run-DMC by Bill Adler, pp. 37-8):

"Sweet high-octane Olde E was a magic potion in D[MC]'s life. He wrote a rhyme about it while he was still in high school that's damn near a love song..."

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

So I ask a question now, or can I just kill the thread?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can ask if you want

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask away, although being as obnoxious as me is obv. optional.

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I will. I have a good question that I suspect someone will be able to answer (and I think I've actually asked it on ILM before):

Only one artist has been covered on an album by the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Who is that artist?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Little Richard?

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

more trivia (a two-parter):

#1. who allegedly provided the motorcycle sounds on the title track of the sandells' scrambler LP in 1964?

#2. what legendary film did this LP become the soundtrack for two years later?

gygax!, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

A good guess, but no (Dylan's the odd man out).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you mean the Standells, Gygax?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

nope, i mean the sandells yancey.

gygax!, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Count me out, then.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

yancey, you can add Elvis to your question too.

gygax!, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

How's that, gygax? The person I'm thinking of was never covered by Elvis. The person was covered by the Bee Gees, but not Elvis. Maybe I'm wrong and there's more than one answer to this...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

check the amg entry for your answer...

gygax!, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

chuck berry

bobby j, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Right. That's the one. Elvis covered that person? Interesting...

Not Chuck Berry.

A hint: Southern R&B singer, some success in the early 60s (a Top 40 hit in 1962)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

solomon burke

bobby j, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Arthur Alexander?

Douglas, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Douglas wins!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

gygax: When did Elvis cover Alexander? What song?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Those who have covered his tunes (self-penned or otherwise) read like a who's who from both sides of the Atlantic: "Anna" (the Beatles); "Soldiers of Love" (the Beatles and Marshall Crenshaw); "Burning Love" (Elvis Presley); and "Set Me Free" (Joe Tex, Esther Phillips, Percy Sledge). The Rolling Stones' cover of "You Better Move On" led to valuable contacts for Rick Hall, and the resulting business enabled him to build the new FAME studio.
— Christine Ohlman
AMG

is that an AMG error...?

gygax!, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Not really, but it's misleading. Alexander didn't write "Burning Love," Dennis Linde did. The AMG bio does say "self-penned or otherwise," although it's still a bit confusing.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

so, yancey, you need to ask another question as your first one only made sense if elvis covered alexander, which he didn't, unless you meant to include covers of covers.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't specify Elvis, Dan.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

you're right and i was mistaken. sorry.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm... I guess that makes it my turn. Okay:

What band's records have featured instrumental (not vocal) contributions by both Peter Sellers and David Bowie?

Douglas, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

plastic ono band?

bobby j, Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Steelye Span?

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Yah, has to be Steeleye Span.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

What poppy late 70s metal tune makes a guest appearence on Nile's "Black Seeds of Vengeance"?

Dave Fischer, Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup, Steeleye Span. Over to you.

Douglas, Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

hot damn, so now i must a question ask
(okay, as it sure beats my pending translation job, i try to think of 'un)

Who is the cheeky pop singeress whos lately has conspicuously snubbed William Shakespeare by preferring Christopher Marlow?

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, 'whos' should've been just 'who' of course

hint 1: for 'singeress' read 'star'

hint 2: there's recorded musical evidence, as of 2002, of said snub/preference,
i.e. it was not merely some casual remark dropped by somebody somewhere

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Kelly Rowland? If we assume that Nelly made a Faustian pact with the devil?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Janet Jackson.

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

No. Nelly Furtado.

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Madonna? Who definitely spends more time with Rupert Everett than Joseph Fiennes.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

go! go! go!
in other words : all wrrrrrong thus far

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

huh, in need of a nother hint, aren't we?

mmm... think 'drama', think 'tribute', think 'singers AND actors'
(Londoners, ahoy! please excuse my misspelling of Marlowe's name and get on the beam)

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

(*notices, baffled, that a new mornin' has arrived in his time zone;
goes to bed, hummin', "...live with me and be my love...")

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Geri Halliwell.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlie, darling! god bless yr soul & thanx fr tryin! -- wadda you doin' up so early anyway? (i thought i was the only 'un left danglin' 'ere) -- erm, sorry, NO -- the lady whose name i'm expectin' to see is considerably older

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

er...it's mid-afternoon. Tina Turner.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Gwyneth Paltrow.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

woa-woa! good *american* people up and about there!?
well: no, and no

first name starts with A, and she'll be 48 in a few days

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril Lavigne.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex, you rogue, for all i see -- okay, i CAN'T but -- y're attemping a very crooked pisstake -- on someone v-v-vevy sleepy on the ovver side of the globe -- but i'm not angry in the least -- i'm already rather amused

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Annie Lennox?

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Arthur -- y're King! -- YESSS!
(hope ye didn't cheat, royally)

you've any idea what album Annie's Marlowe song is from, btw? it's a comp. "When love speaks", released on EMI at the beginning of this year -- all other texts on it, either just recited or set to music, are by Shakespeare;
Lennox's is the only piece to use Marlowe -- tho' in the cd booklet, curiously enough, in one place they've managed to credit "Live with me..." to Shakespeare as well! (in another place they've got it right)

congrats! Arthur, you continue

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, no! I forgot that I had to think of the next question! Give me a minute. I'm horrible at this. No, I didn't cheat, but the "first name A"/"48" hint was a big help. I knew nothing of the compilation you mention.

OK, the writer of the wretched "Wing Beneath My Wings"-- probably the song I hate above all others--is also responsible for the insane vocals on one of my all-time favorite one hit wonder 60s rock hits. Name that hit and the band that performed it. Bonus points if you actually know the name of the writer/singer, cause I sure don't without looking it up on AMG.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The Clapping Song?

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, vocals or lyrics?

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The vocals are very screechy, a really affected falsetto. It's about a man and a woman. And another man. And food.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

It's kinda frat rock.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, I have to go to bed. Somebody ask another question.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! Bette Midler!

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 19 December 2002 07:54 (twenty-three years ago)

For the score to E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial, John Williams took a famous kid's song and stretched out the melody. What tune did he borrow? (this may be easy)

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 19 December 2002 08:41 (twenty-three years ago)

"Wind Beneath My Wings" was written by two people!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

King Arthur! WAKE THE FK UP!!

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I found it ... so two hints:
"Cheerios"
1969

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

OK - that clue was totally wrong ...

New clue (hope it isn't a giveaway):
The B-Side was "Run Baby Run (..)"

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

(these clues are for Arthur's song, BTW - because he's not here - and who wants to wait another 12 hours?)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, my apologies to Jeff Silbar, the other writer of "Wind Beneath My Wings". The one who did not provide the screechy, afffected falsetto for this 60s frat rock song about a man and a woman and another man and FOOD. Which came out in 1964. And was covered by Devo. And which I now realize wasn't really a one hit wonder at all, they had 3 more Top 40 hits! Never heard of them, though. Well, I said I was horrible at this.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Not just Fratrock, but a Goofy Great too.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

these questions so far aren't really pub quiz style trivia which i was hoping for (e.g. the classic 'What's Paul McCartney's middle name?'). still interesting thread though, just increasingly hard to follow!

michael (michael), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
Is it "Bread & Butter" by the Newbeats?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

it was covered by devo, and it has a screechy, affected falsetto vocal...

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

and she was "eating chicken and dumplings with ANOTHER MAN"! I think I'm right.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

and I'm quite sure that Arthur would love it, because it is great...

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

How about this then?

In 1982 two albums were recorded at the same time in the same studio complex. The producer of one of those was also the engineer on the other one, so he ended up having to work partly in one room and partly in another one.

The question follows: Which two albums, and who was the guy?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, you have to answer a question correctly before you get to ask one!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

:)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Fritz is right. That's what I came up with anyway ... (Where's Arthur..?)

Ask a new question Fritz..

These are real ILM posts. Who were they talking about? (each post is about a different artist)

1) "__________ was hardly androgynous. He looked like a walking thug."

2) "I've never heard the _____________, but I think I know what they sound like. I quite like them, but I prefer The Carpenters. I saw them live and that guitar solo just sliced the tops off everyone's heads."

3) "Let's, for argument's sake take the ________, for example. I have a genuine, unironic love for the band -- I mesmerized by their shift rhythmic guitar pieces. I like them for what they produce and, to be a cliche ridden bastard, they strike a chord with me. On the other hand, a large portion of the __________'s audience ... only appreciates them as a bad band, laughing as they chortle over how they think the ____________ are comical in their recordings."

Correct product, but that's not the reason I was thinking of...

I think this was Mr. Acker Bilk.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

I wanted to say Tessie O'Shea, but I think she may be the answer to another trivia question.

Craig David innit.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

6. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

I think (6) is R.E.M. - Automatic for the People?

And for Pleasant Plains's question, I get to ask one now:

7) Who is the famous brother of the writer of "Wild Thing"?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Jon Voigt!

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

I think I get to ask a question. What was the first (and for all I know only) time in chart history that two consecutive number one hits were cover versions of songs by the same artist?

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Was it something like "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Blowin in the Wind"?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

It has to be Dylan even if it's not those two songs.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

"Mony, Mony" by Billy Idol and "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany, both written by Tommy James.

The Moody Blues?

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

ive obviously failed as a quizmaster.... the answer i was looking for was Snap! in 1990 the original duo of Turbo B and Jackie Harris released the no. 1 hit 'The Power', Harris left and was replaced by Penny Ford, and Turbo B was replaced by Nikki Harris before their 2nd hit 'Rhythm is a dancer' in 1992.

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah turbo b. had that gaybashing thing

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Man, you should have waited til the experts on the British charts- namely, the Brits-were awake before you gave up and gave it away!

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah but the question was flawed... still an unusual fact.

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

unusual but not true! the drifters had equally huge UK hits with completely different lineups: the lineup fronted by ben e. king in the early '60s hit at least #2 in the UK ("save the last dance for me") and maybe higher -- i don't have my official brit book by my side -- and the lineup fronted by johnny moore in the early '70s with entirely different members also hit at least #2 ("kissin' in the back row of the movies"). if by any chance the mid-'50s clyde mcphatter version of the drifters cracked the british charts (again, don't have my brit book with me), that would make three!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

i wouldn't be shocked if both those snap! hits were top five in the us.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Okay, then. SINCE I AM STILL WEARING MY JOINT CROWN.

"Burnin' Love" could've been Elvis Presley's 18th number one song on the U.S. Billboard Charts. It would've also allowed him to have had a #1 hit in three decades. Instead, it was held at #2 by what unlikely #! Hit?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

ive obviously failed as a quizmaster.... the answer i was looking for was Snap! in 1990 the original duo of Turbo B and Jackie Harris released the no. 1 hit 'The Power', Harris left and was replaced by Penny Ford, and Turbo B was replaced by Nikki Harris before their 2nd hit 'Rhythm is a dancer' in 1992.

This is a bit unfair, because Snap! is a producer project, and it's always been the same producers (Benito Benites and one or two other guys I think). It's like saying Basement Jaxx have had several hits with totally different lineups...

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm almost positive that Brubeck was mentioned, though there were quite a few names dropped in that scene.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

He may well have been, now that you mention it, but that's not the name that was said right before Elvis got pissed off.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

And surely Francis Davis wouldn't discuss this very issue then mention Dave Brubeck if he were the musician in question?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

googling "pretentious partygoer Jailhouse Rock" gives a message board which says the line Elvis retorted to was a question about whether he thought atonality was overrated.

so... ornette coleman?

Nope.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I think I messed up my question and forgot that Dave Brubeck was mentioned earlier in the scene (which seems to be the case), so I'm going to give it to blount, but the answer I was looking for was:
Lennie Tristano.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

OK, thread seems to have died. Here's a new question: Whose baritone guitar did Glen Campbell borrow to play the solo on "Wichita Lineman"?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Twice a year, Sony stages a Music Trivia Bowl (in midtown NYC) to raise money for World Hunger Year. I got to play in April, and damn were the questions difficult. Fortunately Sean Ross (formerly of Billboard Airplay Monitor, now of Edison Media Research) bailed my team out of several tough ones and we won two out of the three rounds. Prizes = overstock swag (hole-punched CDs, etc).

They should be doing the next one in October; as soon as I find out details, I'll start a separate thread.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I know what it is. "Fire."

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Although I just checked, and that only reached number two. I think Joseph has the right answer, although as he hints in his second post, Greetings From Asbury Park came out in 1973.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Joseph is correct. "Blinded By the Light" was a #1 song for Manfred Mann's Earth Band in February, 1977.

I've been wanting to say Andy Gibb, but Robin's "Saved By The Bell" only made it to number 2 and, for all his US number 1 hits, I'm sure how high Andy charted in the UK.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Little Jimmmy Osmond and Peter Sarstedt.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

ah not necessarily sisters then.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Dods wins.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Yay.

Which acts evolved from;

1. The Invaders
2. Tiger Lily
3. Parva
4. Graduate
5. The Reaction

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

1.Madness

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

3. The Kaiser Chiefs.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh and
4. Tears For Fears?

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

1, 3 and 4 correct.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

2. was Ultravox. I have the single.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

oh and 5. was Talk Talk. I have a track on an album by the reaction, it's called "Talk Talk Talk Talk". Oh yes. But they pronounce it "talc"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

(The album is a various artists, "Streets" on Beggars Banquet)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Do you want ask Mark, or shall I? I think you win for actually owning the single. Plus, my brain has turned to cheese.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

xpost Mark completes the set.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Ah you do it Anna. I have to go, like, now, so won't be around to say "yep"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Okay (sorry about the delay, I got poxy fuled) ...

Which one-hit wonder played the part of Mary in the 1969 film Easy Rider? (this might be a bit easy, still IMDB is cheating.)

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Toni Basile (sp?) the one who did "Mickey"!

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

She was in the scene where they were tripping in the cemetery in, um, New Orleans.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Basil - but yes! Hurrah, you win cake. (Not true, but you do get to ask the next question)

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

OK. One songwriter has had their songs recorded by The Clash, Husker Du, and the Everly Brothers. Name the songs and their writer.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Is it Sonny Curtis? "I Fought The Law", "I Used To Love You", and... something else?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

"Love Is All Around" was the Husker one.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Yup. And I was thinking of "Walk Right Back" for the Everlys, but "I Used To Love You" works too.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Dom got 2/3.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 9 September 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, so Dom should ask the next question.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Which wrestling legend sang vocals on a 1966 top ten single (US charts) before moving into the "sport"?

Bonus points for naming the band, song, and who later covered the song.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I keep wanting to say Jimmy Hart ...

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

You'd be right.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

"Keep On Dancin'" by The Gentrys, which was later covered by the Bay City Rollers.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Bob Seger's only US #1 song came from a motion picture soundtrack.

- What was the song?
- What movie was it from?

and for bonus credit, who was the song offered to first?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 9 September 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

My brain finally gave me a reasonable guess, "Old Time Rock and Roll" from Risky Business. Who was it offered to first- I dunno- Bruce Springsteen?

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

It was "American Storm," I'm guessing the movie was Beverly Hills Cop II (or something equally forgettable), and I don't know who it was offered to first, but based on the way I remember it being delivered (I haven't heard it in 20 years) I'd guess Springsteen.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 10 September 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

It was "Shakedown" from Beverly Hills Cop II and it was originally offered to Glenn Frey, who had the biggest hit from the first soundtrack with "The Heat is On".

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 10 September 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

Oooh ... Nice one!

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 10 September 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill wins! I was ready to post the Michigan connection as a hint.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 10 September 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

all right. Continuing with US charts...

So far, three artists have been featured (as in, being on the right side of that "f/" symbol) on multiple #1 hits, without ever having one of their own. Name 'em.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 10 September 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Santana?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 10 September 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Ludacris?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 10 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Jamie Foxx.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 10 September 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Dido?

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 10 September 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

This one's going to be hard since it seems like everytime I look at the charts lately, the #1 spot seems to be held by someone like "Shontella & Doc w/ PT Kundra f/ Petey the Snake".

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 10 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Mase?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 10 September 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Nate Dogg probably.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 10 September 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Jay-Z?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 10 September 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Surely he's had a #1 hit himself?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 10 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Dom (Jamie Foxx), Tuomas (Mase) and Alisa (Jay-Z) are correct. Jay-Z's on Mariah Carey's "Heartbreaker" and Beyonce's "Crazy in Love," his highest solo charter was "Bonnie and Clyde '03" which I think got to #3, and Ma$e, who was on Puffy's "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" and Biggie's "Mo Money, Mo Problems," I think topped out at #5 for "Feels So Good". Jamie Foxx, who was on "Slow Jamz" and "Gold Digger," obviously hasn't gotten close.

I guess you guys can figure out who goes next.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 10 September 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Well, as I'm on....

Excluding the Band Aid 20 clusterfuck, who were the last three people to get to #1 in the UK charts whilst bearded?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 10 September 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

did Rod Stewart have any Number Ones while married to Rachel Hunter?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

Assuming you mean in a facially-haired kind of way, I'll go for:

Bryan McFadden, Daniel Bedingfield and that Blunt chappie.

since there are tons of people who have been at number one recently that I have no idea what they look like.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 11 September 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

(Did you mean solo artists - there must be some beardy band members around?)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 11 September 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

James Blunt, Akon (he has a minuscule beard, but it's still a beard), Brian McFadden?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 11 September 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

That'll do me.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 September 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Okay... Which UK chart topping artist once said that "irony and reference points are the dark destroyers of great music"? (This was quoted out of memory, so the exact wording may be a bit different.) Hint: considering the the said artist's career, it's a rather surprising statement.

(I think I might've asked this in another trivia quiz, but no one knew the answer then.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 11 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Jive Bunny?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 September 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

No.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 11 September 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Bill Drummond was it not?

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 11 September 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Correct!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 11 September 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

Yaay, ok *thinks*

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 11 September 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Which well known band from the early eighties had very strong connections with Christianity and Christian Youth groups, ironic given later actions (song issues/image etc:)

I should say 3/4 of the band to be totally accurate.

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 11 September 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Venom?

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Sunday, 11 September 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 11 September 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Musical Youth?

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Sunday, 11 September 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Nope, I should say that they are still together.

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 11 September 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

U2?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 11 September 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

No..

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

But U2 fits the question perfectly, no?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Well, there's four of them, some of them are known to be Christians, they were around in the early 80s, but where's the irony?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Is it Depeche Mode? {this is random guess}

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

The irony is they sold millions of records.

I Oppose All Rock and Roll (noodle vague), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure Teh HoBB would appear to be correct with Depeche Mode since that's who I would have said as well (and obviously I know everything, with the exception of Akon's facial hair status).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 11 September 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Stryper?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 11 September 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Yep HoBB is correct, good guesswork.

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Yay!

OK, my turn. I'm pretty sure that I know this because of something I read on ILM, so someone will get this pretty quickly. The 'search' function is banned.

What links Eminem with Labi Siffre with Chas and Dave with Primal Scream?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Well, "My Name Is" sampled Chas and Dave's pre-Chas and Dave band, does it concern that?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Yep, keep going...

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Has Mr Mathers also sampled Siffre and the hippy-hating rockers?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

No

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

You were on the right track the first time.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 12 September 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

"The Real Slim Shady" sampled a Labi Siffre track, on which Chas & Dave played as session musicians. Which just leaves the Primal Scream connection. Um...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

You're nearly there. I'll be back on here by about 3pm - if there's no advance on that, I'll give it to you.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Right, whichever one of Dom Passantino or mike t-diva gets here first can ask next.

Labi Siffre had a song in the seventies called 'I Got The...', on which Chas and Dave played (before they were famous). Eminem's song 'My Name Is' is built on a looped sample from towards the end of this song. The bit of Primal Scream's 'Kill All Hippies' (between the woman/girl saying 'kill all hippies' and bobby gillespie singing 'you got the money') copies the instrumental opening to 'I Got The'.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Three British number one singles have been credited to (someone) vs (someone). Name them.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Run DMC v Jason wotsit.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

LMC vs U2 "take me to the clouds"

Aaron Nevins vs Run DMC "it's like that"

Junkie XL vs Elvis "a little less conversation"

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

I mean, Jason of course. SORRY.

Nicely done Nathalie.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Uh, god, I feel a saddo for knowing it actually. Also I'm crap at making up questions. :-(((

Would this be a good question:

Which famous Punker plays Bruce Meeker in the film Desperately Seeking Susan? He only appears in the film for a few seconds as his character gets killed (offscreen).

Sorry. :-(

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Would that be Richard Hell?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes! An easy question probably. :-)

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

It was a pure guess (Punker, Bit part, fairly straightforward)

OK, how about...

Which was the shortest length track to make the UK charts?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

It's by Duane Eddy, and I can't remember it's name. Something about a hurricane?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was "The Letter" by The Boxtops? (how is alex chilton btw?)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Without cheating... was it Also Sprach Zarathustra, which made the charts in 1969 on the back of the Apollo 11 moon landing? (It was used as the theme tune for the BBC's coverage.) (Oh, and there was also that Kubrick film I suppose.)

If not, then it was some dance thingy: a Nukleus sampler EP, where the first track on the CD was a short megamix of the other tracks.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Think very short indeed.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 12 September 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

This is the a-side, not a silly two-second b-side?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 12 September 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah. it's only about 17seconds (or less, I forget)

I'm off. Tell you tomorrow.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 12 September 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

define "the chart" then! d'you mean top 75?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 12 September 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Crazy Frog!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 12 September 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

And the tune was "Axel F".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 12 September 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

A song by this band was actually played during the filming of the scene in Say Anything when John Cusack holds a boombox aloft that, in Cameron Crowe's final released version, plays Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." What was the original band?

PB, Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Fishbone!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

What, you doubted my Smithereens story?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Correct.

What was your Smithereens story?

PB, Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Songs inspired by a particular motion picture (that didn't appear on the soundtrack to the film)

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Earlier today, I posted about Smithereens writing "A Girl Like You" for Say Anything in the soundtrack thread. The only reason I knew about Fishbone was because I double-checked with imdb.com first about the Smithereens song. Weird coincidence.

Give me a few minutes to come up with a question.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

What is the only U.S. number one song with writing credit given to the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Butterfly by Crazy Town

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

kerpow! You're very bicontinental with your music chart knowledge, Dom.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

OK, here's one I just learned five minutes ago.

The last man to hit .400 over an entire minor league season is the older brother to what successful sibling act?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

The Everly Brothers?

Oh, except they're not actually brothers are they?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Ooooh, it's my turn to ask, stinnit?

Which late 90s popstress has a cameo role in the video for "This Is Hardcore" by Pulp?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Charlie ... that is incorrect.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 17 September 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

The Louvin Brothers?

I'm afraid it's not the everlastin' Louvin.

I googled it. Interesting.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 18 September 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

OK, I just googled it too. Very interesting.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 19 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

The batter's initials are A.P. The siblings charted from '73 through '86 IIRC, but were most successful 1980-1984.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

C'mon, Pleasant, surely you can hit a softball like that.

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Now check out the thing and what they did to Rodney King
That goes to show ya, who controls ya!
The devil man when brothers went lootin' in cali…

remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 22 December 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

yeah, puba takes a solidly anti-devils stance on that record. it's a really solid record though. anyway, I can ask another one if that's too obscure.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't bother me.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 22 December 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

OK, how about...

Which was the shortest length track to make the UK charts?

-- mark grout (mark.grou...) (webmail), September 12th, 2005 3:41 PM. (link)

This was "Theme from Computer Game", by Yellow Magic Orchestra. Approx 7 seconds on the 7", 17 seconds on the 12".

Going back to November 2003--Yes, Fritz, you were right! It was "Bread and Butter".

REVIVED to alert any NYCers who might be interested: I've just gotten the details on M-T BOWL XLV, a team music trivia contest in game-show format, benefiting Jacy de Chavez World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship, taking place Friday, May 12, 5:30pm at Sony BMG. Entrance fee is $20. E-mail me if you want more details. (I'm afraid to pass along the information at large, not knowing how much room for newcomers there'll be.)

Revive!

Name a person who has had a UK top ten hit as a member of four different acts? (Mere songwriters like SAW don't count, because they aren't proper members.)

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

Incl. duets?

Tom D., Monday, 21 April 2008 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

Midge Ure:
Slik, Rich Kids, Ultravox, Thin Lizzy, Solo.

Mark G, Monday, 21 April 2008 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

And Band Aid

Tom D., Monday, 21 April 2008 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

Duets and solo hits aren't included.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

So Midge Ure it is then?

Tom D., Monday, 21 April 2008 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

Midge Ure:
Slik, Rich Kids, Ultravox, Thin Lizzy, Solo.

According to Wikipedia Rich Kids didn't have any top 10 hits, and it's unclear whether Thin Lizzy had any while he was a member.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

Hint: it's not a singer. And even though duets don't count, two-member acts do.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

Vince Clark?

Ophir Zemer, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yup. He's had top 10 hits as a member of Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Assembly, and Erasure.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

Though it's Clarke with an "e". Your turn to ask, I guess.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

Midge Ure is still correct though: Slik, Ultravox, Visage, Band Aid.

mike t-diva, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

vince clarke?

ConnieXX, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

damn it, i was too late.

ConnieXX, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

So, who's had the most top ten hit acts? Solo/duet included!

Mark G, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Jay-Z has six:

9 Foxy Brown featuring Jay-Z - I'll Be - Jun 1997
2 Jay-Z - Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) - Dec 1998
5 Mariah Carey featuring Jay-Z - Heartbreaker - Nov 1999
6 Pharrell Williams featuring Jay-Z - Frontin' - Aug 2003
1 Beyonce featuring Jay-Z - Deja Vu - Aug 2006
1 Rihanna featuring Jay-Z - Umbrella - May 2007

mike t-diva, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

And Busta Rhymes has seven:

8 Busta Rhymes - Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check - May 1996
3 Fugees featuring A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes & Forte - Rumble In The Jungle - Mar 1997
8 B Real / Busta Rhymes / Coolio / LL Cool J / Method Man - Hit 'Em High (The Monstars' Anthem) - Apr 1997
6 Busta Rhymes featuring Janet - What's It Gonna Be?! - May 1999
7 MOP featuring Busta Rhymes - Ante Up - Aug 2001
3 Busta Rhymes & Mariah Carey featuring The Flipmode Squad - I Know What You Want - Jun 2003
1 Pussycat Dolls featuring Busta Rhymes - Don't Cha - Sep 2005

mike t-diva, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, another UK chart trivia question: name a song that has topped the UK charts twice as performed by two different acts, and who performed it?

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

(Searching the Internet databases is kinda cheating.)

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

Unchained Melody, Righteous Bros and Robson and Jerome?

ledge, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

Wow apparently it's topped the charts four times by four different performers! Ok, name the other two.

ledge, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

Correct, though that wasn't the song I was thinking about. Apparently "Unchained Melody" has topped the UK charts as four different versions by four different artists. That must be a record or something?

(x-post)

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

'Mambo No. 5' has topped the charts twice, by Lou Bega and Bob The Builder.

blueski, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Name a person who has had a UK top ten hit as a member of four different acts? (Mere songwriters like SAW don't count, because they aren't proper members.)

Pretty sure Tony Burrows did this, too (Flowerpot Men, Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, the Pipkins, The Brotherhood of Man, First Class...)

dell, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

Name a person who has had a UK top ten hit as a member of four different acts?

Norman Cook has managed this as a member of The Housemartins, Beats International, Freakpower and as Fatboy Slim

blueski, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, one more chart trivia question: as far as I know, Herbie Hancock has never had a top 10 single hit in the US as a solo artist. However, at least three different tunes credited or co-credited to him have reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 single list. Can you name those tunes and their performers?

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't checked the stats, but Rockit was pretty big, no? I'd have thought it would've been close to top 10?

Thomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

I think it was a bigger hit in the UK, but as far as I know it never reached the US top ten.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

I checked it, according to AMG it never reached higher than number 71 on the US chart. I guess the video being so prominent on MTV made is seem like a bigger hit.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

"Singing The Blues" got to number one, and then was replaced by itself!

(Guy Mitchell and Tommy Steele folks)

Mark G, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

I might be able to name one of them: US3's "Cantaloop".
(Assuming it went Top 10 in the US, of course.)

mike t-diva, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that's one of the three I was thinking of. Two to go.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

'Groove Is In The Heart' for the guitar sample?

blueski, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

Dee-Lite's "Groove is in the Heart" sampled Hancock, but I'm not sure if he got a writing credit out of it.

The Deacon, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

Boombastic jazz style?

Mark G, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

"(Searching the Internet databases is kinda cheating.)"

So how do you make up your questions?

stevienixed, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

Did Magic Number chart? I have no idea who else performed on that tune besides Hancock.

Mr. Goodman, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

"Groove is in the Heart" is indeed correct, the bassline is sampled from "Bring Down the Birds", a tune on Herbie's soundtrack for Blow-Up.

One more to go.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hint: this one is a cover version, not a sample-based song.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

not Sex-O-Sonique's 'I Thought It Was You'? minor hit here but presumably not in the US

blueski, Monday, 21 April 2008 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Never heard of that one, I assume it was not a top 10 hit.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

"Axel F" and "Crazy Frog"

Steve Shasta, Monday, 21 April 2008 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Eh? That song was written and performed by Harold Faltermeyer.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Mongo Santamaria - "Watermelon Man"

Stormy Davis, Monday, 21 April 2008 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

Correct!

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Wow. Impressive.

Mr. Goodman, Monday, 21 April 2008 18:30 (eighteen years ago)
