Homosexuality in the music business?

Hi all, I haven't been around for a while due to work issues. But i was wondering about some info on musicians that have come out. I'm working on an essay for a small paper and any info would be appreciated.

Simona (Simona), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Elton John in 1976; He ranked as #2 (#1 was oj simpson) on who young men considered their hero the following year (as reported by pop up video)

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear that Jonsi from Sigur Ros is openly gay. Don't know much about it though.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

David Bowie, but the jury's still out about whether he meant it or not.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Melissa Ethridge, not that anyone was really surprised.

paul cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, this would be a good place to start...

A True Fairy

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Mould and Grant Hart of Hüsker Dü I believe.

Alex Murphy, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Stipey

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Gentleman Reg's new album Make Me Pretty is too coming out what Dylan's Blood on the Tracks is to divorce.

Emmet Matheson, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Grant's gay too? Never knew that.

paul cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Rufus Wainwright, Stephin Merritt, Eminem

Aaron A., Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

kirk hammet from Metallica. pretty odd one for being in such a homophobic genre

and the lead singer from Judas Priest. but now he's doing industrial stuff in a band called FIGHT (?). a lot more accepting of a genre

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Erasure, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Village People

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Since when is Kirk Hammet gay? Isn't he still married?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Curtis Stephens, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never received any corroboration on this, however;

I seem to recall a story that had Rod Stewart being rushed-off to the hospital were he ultimately had to get his stomach pumped after having ingested an inordinate volume of semen.

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hadn't heard about Kirk Hammett. I know he played on Pansy Division's cover of "For Those About to Rock" (re-titled, cheekily, "For Those About to Suck Cock"), but that doesn't necessarily make him gay.

Rob Halford is the ex-Judas Priest frontman you spoke of, but Fight pre-dates his coming out, and isn't a going concern anymore. His industrial project was called TWO, I believe, and came out on Trent Reznor's NOTHING label (and subsequently failed). Rob's now back on the metal side of things, fronting his band dubbed Halford.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Fred Durst

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe i'm making this Hammett thing up. i swear i heard it. i tried googling for it and with the way kids these days talk, all i could find were people saying how "gay" metallica was now. so maybe my sources were wrong.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this thread really happening?

"I mean, darling, it's not a rave, it's a HAPPENING!"

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Morrisey is gay

Aaron W, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks was quite gay, it seemed, back in the day (penning several a Buzzcocks love song without gender role specifics, and -- lest we forget -- writing "Homosapien"), but I've heard that he's since married a woman (!?!?!) and had a critter or two. Not positive of that, but I have seen pics of him pushing a stroller.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't the poster girl for queer musicians, Ani DiFranco, married to a m-a-n? But not The Man apparantly.

Horace Mann, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Grant Hart and Kirk Hammett are both bisexual, IIRC.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

There must be a list of people associated with the apocryphal "stomach pumped after having ingested an inordinate volume of semen" tale.

stephen. s (yaye), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I know! It's really amazing how many times it's happened. You'd think the rockers would learn not to swallow!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Or at least pass around the name/description of the guy who can't help but blast a gallon of cum to better avoid runnig up hospital bills.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

marc almond (soft cell), jimmy somerville (bronski beat), george michael, god is my co-pilot (fronted by a bi couple), cecil taylor, pauline oliveros, annea lockwood, john cage, henry cowell, harry parth (?), larry levan & arthur russell (i think)...a lot of disco people for that matter, maybe someone else can help me out. lou reed "came out" at one point although my understanding is that like bowie he denies it now. what's the main focus of the article? i would be interested in reading it.

James Annett (jlannett), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Lou Reed

, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The guy that sings in R.E.M

, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha! George Michael is right! Although, he was sort of forced out of the closet.

paul cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Sylvester.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

there's gotta be some juicy on some members of the b-52s. what about eminem? hehe... nah, i suppose that's in the pet shop boys' dreams.

m.

msp, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

are once again sistas left to do it mostly themselves on some other thread?

ok, kd lang.
jane siberry too?

t\'\'t (t''t), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

aren't the suicide guys also gay?

Alan Vega's married, and has a kid.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Glenn Danzig.

Wasn't it rumoured that Nancy was just a "beard" and Sid Vicious was?

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

wasn't there some flingy stuff going on between some of the notable members of the runaways?

m.

msp, Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem is in the closet

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonathan Davis (sp?) of Korn.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah; Joan Jett.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

As for the B52s, Fred Schneider is openly gay - the guy's like a how-to for crying out loud.

Aphex Twin once admitted in an interview to performing fellatio for cash as a young man Then again he could've been just fscking with the reporter as he's known to do. He has a girlfriend now, though, and has his computer write songs about her.

Elton John came out after an attempt at marriage went sour and he contemplated killing himself. Didn't stop him from a thrity+ year chart streak though, I think he's still on it.

Dave Matthews is gay. His fans don't know this, somehow.

Kathleen Hanna - gay? see below.

Can't confirm but Dennis Lyxzen of The International Noise Conspiracy, formerly of the Refused, is gay?

Pink is bi.

Tom Millar (Millar), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Weir! (Nobody knows this one either.)

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

wasn't Dennis going out with the girl member of (I)NC?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonathan in Korn is married to a (female) porn star. He may be many things, but he's not gay.

Didn't know about Bob Weir. True?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Both guys in Matmos; they're a couple.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

One hates to state the FUCKIN' BLEEDIN' obvious but...surely all rock'n'roll is homosexual, darling. As any fule no.

Venga, Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy bell of Erasure is gay, but Vince Clarke is/was married wasnt he?

brad, Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlie Daniels! Nobody knows this but me, though. All country rock is homosexual.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Euuuwww. That last post just gave me a mental image of Charlie Daniels and Hank Williams Jr soul-kissing and getting their beards tangled.
Brrr.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Matthews is gay. His fans don't know this, somehow.
Kathleen Hanna - gay? see below.

Supposedly Dave Matthews is bi; he's presently married but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Kathleen Hanna had a low-key involvement with one of the Beastie Boys; I don't know if she's ever put any label on herself.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Erase Erata and Le Tigre = yes

well at least the two ladies with mustachios

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron Carter and Lil Romeo.

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't forget Klaus Nomi & Man Parrish

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Fat Joe is a lesbian

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Simon Hilbert. H from Steps. Will Young. So?

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Simon Gilbert. H from Steps. Will Young. So?

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

oops. that was pretty gay.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein *swoon* from Sleater Kinney.
And I'm figuring that with the amount of aural wankery they're invovled in, The Future Sound of London have to have at least accidentally engaged in Greekish love.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 19 December 2002 08:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks was quite gay, it seemed, back in the day but I've heard that he's since married a woman (!?!?!) and had a critter or two."

I saw Tom "Sing If You're Glad To Be Gay" Robinson at Glastonbury a few years ago and was amazed to discover that he too had got married and had a couple of children.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 19 December 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

no mention of Freddy Mercury yet? whassup with all y'all?

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 09:31 (twenty-three years ago)

That bloke from Ocean Colour Scene was one of the more bizarre tabloid outings.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 19 December 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Jane Siberry = not gay.
Grant Hart = gay, not bi.
Klaus Nomi.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

patrick califa

Queen G (Queeng), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe Pete Townshend, but maybe not.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

That lot that did 69 love songs r al(most al)l gay, in the sex way.

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

there's gotta be some juicy on some members of the b-52s.

Not exactly juicy, but their original guitarist died of AIDS.

hstencil, Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Has the Moz been mentioned on here, even though he says he is a-sexual.

Liberace

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm. still no mention of Coil?

Thighpaulsandra?

Tierre Themlitz (?)

Matmos

... am I coming out as a Wire-head or what?

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 19 December 2002 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I pretty sure the Toilet Boys are...or at least the lead singer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Miss Guy is 100% woman!! Ok, maybe 90%.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Grant Hart = gay, not bi.

He has a son, and some of the ancidotes I've heard about him involve girlfriends.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Gay: Roddy Bottum from Faith No More and Imperial Teen (as well as the other guy in Imperial Teen whose name I forget).

Not Gay: Corin Tucker, who is married. To a guy.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Tool?

Winslow (winslow), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

so Roddy Bottum was a nom de plume surely?

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

didn't boy george's boyfriend from the culture club (jon moss?) switch teams and eventually get married and have kids?

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Dusty Springfield. Allegedly, Lesley Gore as well.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Boy George alledged in his book that he had an affair with Kirk Brandon of Theatre of Hate/Spear of Destiny (ooh errr!), who flatly denied it and sued for defamation.

Her out of the utterly unlistenable 4 Non Blondes is a lesbian.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

so Roddy Bottum was a nom de plume surely?

As far as I know, it's his real name. He came out in 1993 but had been using the name ever since he co-founded Faith No More in 1982 (!).

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone please note that many people do go in and out of a homosexual or bisexual phase while they're younger (or sometimes older). Sexual orientation is a very fluid thing.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

that was roddy's name at loyola high school back in the day.

dan (dan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you know about the book The Vinyl Closet , by Boze Hadleigh? You ought to try to get your hands on it, if you can. Sample selection :

"O is a top singer, or was. She has been in a considerable commercial decline which, oddly enough, coincided with her contractual marriage to a gay male. In the glory days, and despite her long-term girlfriends, O's image was almost as heterosexual as it is now. Like many female singers, she was romantically linked -- by herself and the press -- with her male manager, one of the several people in her life about whom she refused to talk."

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

"Boy George alledged in his book that he had an affair with Kirk Brandon of Theatre of Hate/Spear of Destiny (ooh errr!), who flatly denied it and sued for defamation"

I don't believe Kirk actually denied that he was gay, just (certain aspects of?) his relationship with Mr O'Dowd.

It was always pretty obvious (or at least, it certainly seemed that way to me!) that Kirk and Stan Stammers (ToH / SoD bassist) were partners in more than just a musical sense....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 20 December 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Grant Hart had girlfriends while closeted.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 20 December 2002 09:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian Epstein

weatheringdaleson (weatheringdaleson), Friday, 20 December 2002 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Basically, anyone who matters is gay. We all know that right?

maria b (maria b), Friday, 20 December 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

"Basically, anyone who matters is gay. We all know that right?"

Maybe so, maybe not. Who cares? A good song is a good song is a good song, regardless of who the musician in question likes to make the beast with the doubled-back with.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Ted Nugent

Drake, Friday, 20 December 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Common.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

This friend of mine swears he used to hang out with Ted Nugent at the St. Mark's Baths in the early 80s.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ted Nugent sucks in bottom of large taps and packs flux!

Duc, Friday, 20 December 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It rocks! It kills out of the common stags with large rifles!

Duc, Friday, 20 December 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It kills the merry people with the horns of the common stags which it killed with its naked hands!

Duc, Friday, 20 December 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Though Nuge is merry!

Duc, Friday, 20 December 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

some of the sugarcubes.
there was an interview in select (uk) early 1992
in which 2 of the males talked about getting married.
it was serious from what i can make out.

piscesboy, Saturday, 21 December 2002 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe the question we should be asking = who ISN'T gay in the music business?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 21 December 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Elephant Man?

michael (michael), Saturday, 21 December 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah yeah yeah...its all well and good to accuse, but whats anybodies proof? Eh?
(The only ones mentioned on this thread who are undoubtably limpwristed are Fred Schneider and Liberace. The rest just seem to be names randomly pulled out of a hat.)

Maybe so, maybe not. Who cares? A good song is a good song is a good song, regardless of who the musician in question likes to make the beast with the doubled-back with.
Naw, its who they make the Beast with Three Backs that matters.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 23 December 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

u r all gay.

How much come would one have to swallow to have to get one's stomach pumped?!?!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 23 December 2002 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask Rod Stewart. An urban myth claims he emptied out an entire soccer team back in the late 60s.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 23 December 2002 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

thats like that myth that clara bow f*cked the entire usc football team back in the 20s - simply not true

Sisquo is gay. not kidding - but isnt it awbveeous? oh and why hasnt anyone mentioned Ricky Martin yet?

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 16 January 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Mainstream society didn't recognize the signifiers so much back in the 1970s and early 80s. But when Halford came out and the news shows ran clips of old JP concerts, I was wondering who styled their shows -- Tom of Finland?

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 16 January 2003 04:39 (twenty-three years ago)

WYCKYD SCEPTRE

mosurock (mosurock), Thursday, 16 January 2003 07:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Stewart - is the Kirk Brandon/Stan Stammers thjing true? Really?

The Kirk/George thing is definitely true - a friend of mine who lived in Brighton at the time (who's in the Boy George book - transsexual called Stef) put them both up in the very early 80s, and used to bring them brekkie in bed every morning.

russ t, Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
"Senior" from Junior Senior

Andy Lemaster from Now It's Overhead

Jamie Stewart from Xiu Xiu (bi)

thad, Friday, 26 March 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

why would you ever need to get your stomach pumped from semen? i'd think you'd just puke it up if it was a problem. it's not like drugs and alcohol which get absorbed and all that.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

...beer before liquor, never be sicker...

christoff (christoff), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Anselmos is gay, Kirk Hammet is gay, and I heard that Lain from Alice in Chains was gay.

Franklin, Monday, 29 March 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Dis thread is ghey.

1234, Monday, 29 March 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm not sure if any one is still reading this thread or still cares but I've thought of some more. Jann Wenner founder of Rolling Stone magazine. Record mogul David Geffen. Chuck Panozzo bass player for Styx. Peter Allen. I think all three guys in the B52's are or were (In Ricky's case) gay. I have even heard from a reliable source that Kate Pierson is bisexual, meaning that the only straight member of the group is Cindy.

Randyzoo, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

how come no one has said Henry Rollins?

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Because he's ostensibly straight.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeeeeeah riiiiight.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I forgot! Doug Pinnick lead singer of the rock group Kings X.

Randyzoo, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yeeeeeah riiiiight."

I said ostensibly.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I got another one for you. Johnny Mathis.

Randyzoo, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

David Bowie, but the jury's still out about whether he meant it or not.

I thought David Bowie was bisexual. He met his first wife because they were dating the same guy.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

how come no one has said Henry Rollins?

I had a conversation at the 7th St. Entry with a quite drunk (and openly gay) Grant Hart of Husker Du....and we were discussing the old SST crew and Rollins came up, Grant immediately said, "Man...I just don't understand...why doesn't Henry just come out of the closet? He's so angry...I think it would do him some good" (or something to that effect)....basically Hart acted like it was common knowledge that Rollins was gay or something...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Greg Dulli??

He looks it.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Grant Hart smokes enough weed to put an elephant to sleep.

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

My god I keep remembering more ! Jazz musician Sun Ra is another one we could add to the list.

Randyzoo, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

re: Jon Moss: I seem to recall that Seymour Stein the (married, IIRC?) head of Sire Records was after Jon Moss back when he was in London (the punk band who recorded Animal Games, not the city!) before he joined The Damned and later Culture Club.

Andrew Czezowski (manager of the Roxy club and, briefly, The Damned) was gay and I'm pretty sure Bernie Rhodes (manager of Subway Sect, The Clash and The Specials) was too.

Gene October of Chelsea was very openly and fortrightly gay - in fact he even hit on me once many, many years ago, in the apparent (mistaken) belief that I was!

I recall there were a number of different rumours circulating regarding the reason why Billy Idol, Tony James and John Towe all left Gene / Chelsea to form their own band (Generation X) ranging from: they didn't approve of his predatory manner; he fell out with them over certain homophobic attitudes / comments; one or more of the others were secretly gay and weren't prepared to have Gene "out" them. I'd like to make it clear that I have absolutely no idea whether any of these rumours contain any element of truth!

Young r&b singer Tevin Campbell was outed when he was arrested by an undercover male police officer for solicitation.

Randyzoo, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone please note that many people do go in and out of a homosexual or bisexual phase while they're younger (or sometimes older).

Of course this goes both ways; lots of people go through a heterosexual phase early in life, or "try" to be straight to avoid the stigma gay people are still given.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah a friend of mine toured with Henry Rollins in Australia and said that HR was always cruisin' the beaches for dick.

Kdawg, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Woah, Rollins, for real? He spent so much of his boring-ass spoken word CD denying it! Whole new layers of subtext in the classic "Rollins grabs Calvin Johnson's crotch" story.

Charming Tedious, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"it was because yr so damn *cute!*; he couldn't help himself!"

Yes, yes, yes, I really think you could be on top something there!

My almost irrestible cuteness + the fact that it was getting late, Gene hadn't pulled yet and was pissed out of his mind.

"Denying you are gay automatically makes you gay."

Aaaah well, in that case I would like to take this opportunity to say: I am gay!

(That does automatically makes me straight, right?)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if you are denying it, then I guess it's true, but if you are telling the truth, then you're not gay.

Wow i just love this thread! I won't be surprised if most musicians (more notably the heavy metal/rock dudes) are bi or gay. I used to be in a metal/rock band myself and am a closet bi. I used to suck off my best friend our drummer who is supposedly straight. He's in complete denial over it. Pussies are great, but then again, so are cocks.

I was watching some culture club videos last night and wondered aloud how there was ever any debate on whether or not Boy George was gay (this debate may have only been in the US). My wife said that when her grandmother saw him on TV, she declared that the world was going to hell!

Also, I now wonder how there was ever any question about George Michael.

In fifteen years time, whose sexuality will we be surprised that we ever questioned? Ricky Martin? People aren't so cagey about it any more but there must be a few (Lance Bass?)

Judging by the regularity and ferocity of the displays homophobia displayed by so many hip-hop artistes, I'm inclined to believe there's going to be an extremely substantial number of 'em (are we familar with the concept of "denial" at all?).

Of course I won't even mention where that fashion of wearing your jeans baggy and below your arse actually comes from....

some of the sugarcubes.
there was an interview in select (uk) early 1992
in which 2 of the males talked about getting married.
it was serious from what i can make out.

The Sugarcubes were very incestuous. If I remember the stories right...

- the guitarist is the father of Bjork's kid
- the guitarist later left Bjork for the female keyboard player
- the drummer's and bass player's first wives were twin sisters
- the bass player left his wife to marry the Cubes' male vocalist, Einar Orn

He was donutsexual.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 22 June 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

from wiki:
During Vandross's entire career, he was dogged by questions regarding his sexuality. A lifelong bachelor, his name was never romantically linked in the media with women. Although Vandross never explicitly denied being gay, he never publicly acknowledged it either. He generally attempted to steer questioners away from the issue altogether by saying that his "busy lifestyle" made marriage difficult and indicated that, in any case, "it was not what he wanted." It is said he made all his employees sign discretion contracts that prevented them from discussing his personal life without severe financial retribution. After his death an article in Out magazine had several of Vandross' friends, including Bruce Vilanch disclose that Luther was indeed a very unhappily closeted gay man. [1]

three weeks pass...
Let's get something straight. Henry Rollins is not gay. That is a fact. I've hung out with him.
Everyone in the music business knew Rob Halford was gay, though if you talked to him it wasn't obvious. I can't believe anyone on the planet was surprised when he came out of the closet. Hell I heard from a reliable source that he was gay in 1983.(I couldn't listen to eat me alive after that, it just wasn't the same) I have heard a rumor that Bon Scott's first wife caught him pounding some other guy's behind, and that's why she left him. Not sure about that, but his replacement, Brian Johnson, may like women more than anyone else I know. Johnson asked one of the female cameramen that shot the STIFF UPPER LIP video if he could wrap her legs around his neck and use them as a scarf. He also got caught with his hand on a womans behind at the end of the SNL show AC/DC was on. Not sure about the rest of the band.
What started the Kirk Hammet rumor? also the Dave Draiman rumor. And what about the Mick Jagger/David Bowie rumor? Hasn't anyone ever heard that one. I've heard the Rod Stewart stomach pumping rumor many times. I always figured if it was true, it would have been confirmed by a reliable source by now. Just because everyone(male) in the choir in high school is gay, doesn't mean everyone that sings in a band is.
There's really no reason for anyone in a band to be in the closet anymore. Being gay hasn't hurt anyone's record sales in a long time. I don't think there are as many musicians in the closet as the press and the idiots that start these rumors would have you believe.
