I think electroclash is a phenomenon, but we're going to have to come up with a broader term for it. Because right now, it defines this very narrow sound, which is itself defined by aping a very narrow slice of 80's music. This form of aping -- which is not homage, not borrowing, not sampling, not influence, just plain aping to dancable camp effect-- is also endemic to Justin Timberlake (re: Michael Jackson) and hip-hop rip-offs like Will Smith. The "electroclash" gang may cloak themselves in artier attire than those examples do, but the method is the same, and so the name should be the same.

i think after like 10 or more years of trying, this one actually has caught on, hasn't it? at least in new york. sort of. schwervon! are pretty damn great and wave the anti-folk flag. i'm not a big moldy peaches fan, but they're waving the flag too and somebody seems to like them. there's a few other really good bands in that scene at the moment.

What was the deal with that? I was always faintly suspicious that it was an advertorial for Chain With No Name record shops or something, but that's so rubbish it can't be true.

"No name" was the original term for noisy guitar bands of 2001-2 like Ikara Colt, Parkinsons, Eighties Matchbox. Later to be subsumed into the all-encompassing (and now defunct) New Rock Revolution.

Mog - I know, but I remember reading that article (by Swells I think) and it just sticking out like a sore thumb. It was even set out differently to most NME articles at the time, IIRC. Skin Graft records tried to call their artists at time (US Maple, Flying Luttenbachers, Mount Shasta, ete) Now Wave, but I don't think it caught on.

Lately I see alot about "screamo" but I hope that word doesn't catch on.
