Wot, no Jesus Lizard thread?

Are they forgotten so soon? Still one of the best live bands I've ever seen, definitely the only time I'm going to pay to have the penis of a screaming, hunchbacked, sweaty little man waved inches from my face.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

My band covers "Monkey Trick" and we hope to soon become the first band at http://www.coversproject.com to do so. Our singer can imitate David Yow's "yow! yow! yow! yow!" rather nicely.

Famous Athlete, Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

hah, i saw the thread title and the first thing i thought to post was basically what nordicskillz said.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, I wish I'd had a chance to experience this band, particularly during their earlier years. Around "Goat" should be swell.

I actually found "Shot" to be pretty good too, aside from a few tracks. I never really saw what everyone found so bad about that. I haven't heard it in years though. Meanwhile, I really can't get into Tomahawk... It just drags and hits my snoozebutton.

I've unfortunately stood way up front at a New Bomb Turks concert once, where the vocalist decided to get nekkid too.
The concert wasn't all that good, and that certainly didn't help matters!

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Their song is on the radio right here, right now. The guy's voice is a little too rough for me, and he does a poor falsetto, and they use this song every time something historical happend. So dud.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to be nuts for this band. I think "Down" was the record I liked the best. You could never understand a word the singer sang, which was kinda funny. I saw them on a Lollapalooza tour, and they were pretty intense, but I was standing far back. I've also got their split 7" with Nirvana; it has lovely sleeve artwork.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:40 (twenty-three years ago)

classic first date question: "so, do you like the jesus lizard?"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Melody Maker once described David Yow's singing as "the sound of a man with poo stapled to his lips". I mean, IMAGINE. Logistically, of course, that's impossible.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 20 March 2003 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Great band! I never saw them live (I'm from Mexico city,so) albums like "Goat", "Pure" and "Liar" are really awesome, but I could never get into "Down". An amazing powerful band!

Jav G, Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh. One time I saw them live David Yow had the art of striptease down. Them were some sleazy geetars.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Liar! Liar is the one I like.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

let us not forget the genius of duane denison. i wanted to use the word 'slashing' in describing his sound, but i think it is firmly in the category of 'use other words please'. and goat is my fave, but the head/pure comp is also brilliant.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The first time I saw them yow lit himself on fire and ran through the crowd. One of the greats really rock has been slowly spiraling down to its death since they've called it a day....

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 21 March 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the singles comp is completely incredible

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 21 March 2003 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

One odd detail revealed by Yow's compulsive public nudity: a tattoo of a comma, as small and black as if it were on the printed page, inscribed on his sweaty shoulder. Never have I seen a more subtle and baffling tattoo.

EC, Friday, 21 March 2003 03:37 (twenty-three years ago)

They were an incredible live band. Yow shreiking and tumbling around, doing his thing. Denison and Sims stoic; Sims always staring ahead towards some point in the air above the crowd. MCneilly completely pounding the shit out of his drums. It was really quite a trippy experience.

With a lot of these late 80's/early 90's indie/pigfuck/whatever bands you got the impression the drummers were all competing to see who could play the loudest/hardest. Who could wear the mantle of the "new John Bonham". Rey Washam in Scratch Acid, McNeilly, Jim Kimball in Laughing Hyenas, all trying to destroy their kit full-tilt, all the time.

Duane Denison is an excellent guitar player. He really understands the instrument, had an impeccable tone, knew how to create the perfect heavy riff but still leave some space in the music. He's a lot like Jimmy Page, to drag out the Zep comparison.

I saw them once at a small club - more like neighborhood bar - in Chicago under a fake name. They were listed as Led Zeus Shitjar. I thought that was so perfect, I think it's a better name than The Jesus Lizard. When I saw the listing in the paper it gave me pause, I knew it had to be an anagram for them. Apparantly lots of other people did as well, because the show was insane; tons of folk jammed into this tiny space. Some idiot started crowd surfing about 20 minutes into it and reached up and punched out a ceiling tile (yes this place looked like a suburban basement). That was it, the owner pulled the plug on them.

I jumped off with Down; never heard the later records. Just wasn't feeling it anymore. But yeah they totally ruled back in the day.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 21 March 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

anyways, saw once and it was great. i think they were banned from playing seattle later on

three weeks pass...
I saw them once (alongside the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion circa that first self titled record, also the one time I saw them too) and it was great. They pretty much began their set exactly the way "Liar" beings.... *complete uneasy pause of silence then* "UUUNH!*ROCK*". Also Yow denounced song requests in a complete mock campy shell of pretense..."WEEEEEEEEE HAVE a setlist!... your requests are ignored."

I wish I had seen Fishwife (from San Diego). I heard Ryan was the only man who could possibly top Yow.

Okay, I do indeed Love Music, but this is the only thing I will post on this board today, simply because I feel it so strongly. I bought Bang today (the singles comp that j0hn refers to above), and while I already have most of the material on it, it is a revelation. It is just incredible. I forgot what a strong back catalogue they have, and how close their records come to the live experience. Is there any other band around at the moment that comes close to matching the intensity and musicianship of the Jesus Lizard? If so, could you point me their way?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The first time I got truly, totally, rippingly stoned, I was listening to Goat. The love was immediate, and still it lingers.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus Lizard is one of my top five favorite bands. I already told the story of nearly getting Yow's penis in my eye in another thread so I will talk about the first JL show I saw. My friends and I had met David Yow and David William Sims at a Scratch Acid show, their last tour in support of Berserker. We also saw Sims in Rape Man with Steve Albini, before the Lizard came along. Theire first record, Pure, used a drum machine, so we were expecting a Big Black kind of show. Fortunately they rolled in DC Space with a real live drummer. They played a great set to about twenty people, my friends and I sang Block Buster with Dave and then they sat around and talked with us for a while, really nice people.
The next show they were in-fucking-sane. Yow squeezing his ballsack into grapefriut sized proportions, walking on the crowd while howling into a microphone, holding 100 people at bay like a rabid lion tamer and slamming Bushmills.
I was most impressed at the band being able to play a really long set to complete perfection, while the venue went totally bonkers. My favorite memory was Yow crowd surfing and singing through the first five songs at the Metro in Chicago (longest mic cable I've ever seen), until Sims politely asked "Can we have the singer back now?"
They really were the best live band ever, not just for the antics but because they could play.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i used to like them a lot. i think the real reason there is no jesus lizard thread is because they never did it as well as the birthday party / zeppelin.

bob snoom, Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Jesus Lizard a few times and they were out of this world. I've seen alot of rock bands, but the guitar, bass, and drum combo (with Mac) is by far the most powerful musical wrecking crew I ever have heard. The last time I saw them with Kimball on drums and it was good, but he is a much more controlled player than Mac.

Yow is quite unique vocalist, to say the least.

I've said it before on another thread, but Duane Denison is very underrated as a guitarist. He has such a developed technique and uses it with such great effeciency. The guy flat out knows his chords.

I don't know about Zep as that is bedrock with me, but I like the Jesus Lizard quite a bit more than The Birthday Party.

earlnash, Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just thinking about these guys today. Remembering Yow's semi-strip routine at a 1993 show...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Funny enough I just listened to Down again two days ago, as I'm in the midst of a cd purge. Unfortunately it didn't make the cut. I can't put my finger on why it sounded so uninvolving - I mean, it's them, doing what they do - but it really seems to lack the spark that was present on Goat and Liar.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 8 May 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

(longest mic cable I've ever seen)

YES! i only saw them once, but was impressed that yow was passed almost to the back corner of the club

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I once sat under a stage for two hours when I was underage so I could see the Jesus Lizard. Incredible, incredible band. I was in the front, and within the first 10 seconds of the first song (the first one off Goat, I think), Yow jumped on top of me. Fortunately he wasn't naked.

hstencil, Friday, 9 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually it kinda hurt, he's heavier than he looks.

hstencil, Friday, 9 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Best live show ever, saw 'em at Lolla 95 in WV and at the 9:30 at the ass-end of '96. "Liar" is in my top 50 cds evah. Yes, I too have seen this man's unit.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird. I saw them at least three times that I can recall (there may be another show in there that alcohol has dimmed the memory of), but Yow never whipped it out.

And yes, Liar is great, which is probably why Down seemed comparatively lackluster.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with you about Down, I thought, at the time, that it was just me, going off of The Jesus Lizard, but it just doesn't click. They obviously realised this, too.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, whenever i see SoBe bottles i think of the Jesus Lizard. does anyone actually need bottled Yow Juice, though? eep.

janni (janni), Friday, 9 May 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

one of the top 10 live shows i've seen. yow was soaked with sweat and the crowd passed him over their heads all the way to the back of the club (Tramps RIP). he was screaming in the mic the whole time. the noise and charge was fucking *huge*. sigh.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 9 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

That show I described was at a place called the Czar Bar. Used to be on Division near Damen, back when that area was, uh, significantly less populated than it is at present. It was this average old neighborhood bar adorned with beer posters and the like, owned by this older polish guy that some enterprising hipster must have convinced to allow rock shows on the weekends. Mainly lots of smaller local bands played, but I remember seeing touring bands like God Is My Co-Pilot and even Beat Happening there. Liz Phair actually played there a bit when she was starting out. Anyway, the place was fairly small hence Jesus Lizard playing under an assumed name, as it could never accomodate their usual fan base. Too many people showed up anyway and it was kind of a mess. I'm pretty sure that was one of the last shows the old guy allowed there. I think it closed in like '94.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 9 May 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i remember that club. was too young to get in at the time, but i remember going past there several times. used to live just up the street, near Damen and Irving. :)

janni (janni), Friday, 9 May 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw them at a Chicago club called Crowbar once, it was their opening weekend or something and they wanted the Lizard. Great show, right around new years I think, just before Lash came out.
Metro had them as part of their big celebration week dealio, too. The had Helmet friday and JL Saturday with Quicksand Laughing Hyenas as the openers (not sure who opened for whom). Massive bruises but sooooo worth it.
A guy was smoking a joint near the stage and Yow says "Oh, is that a marijuana cigarette?" the guy was like, dude have some and handing to him. Yow held it with his finger and thumb, sniffed it and then flicked it to the back of the hall and said "Ooops."
The whole place busted up laughing. This illustrated a crucial point "Never let that muscular little troll touch ANYTHING you value."

i only ever saw Yow's balls on the mic. Enormous. '93 at Emo's, Jon Spencer opened, around the time of Liar and A Reverse Willie Horton. Recently went through their singles and Goat, my simplest assessment being that they were the Zep of the nineties.

Beta, Saturday, 18 October 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone know what david yow is up to these days? in his day he was the best vocalist ever.

shut up, Sunday, 19 October 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I asked the gents in Firewater (longtime pals with the `Lizard) about Yow's latest activity. Apparently Yow's sort've had his fill with music, though occaissionally talks about a fabled 'solo project.' Don't hold your breath, however.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 19 October 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yow contributes a live version of Roger Miller's "One Dyin' & A Buryin'" to the Pine Valley Cosmonauts "Executioner's Last Songs Vols 2&3", which came out fairly recently. Very good it is too, reminds me a bit of Johnny Thunders' solo stuff.

i've been listening to the jesus lizard every day this week

'monkey trick' is such a thumper of a song. builds up to a massive, terrifying climax without you even realising it, then the last 40 seconds or so is sonic bliss for the initiated.

i love the way the band has recurring, hook-based riffs in their songs. adds dimension and focus to the vocal carnage and waywardness. fuckin tight rhythm section too.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 31 August 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

factcheckr, Thursday, 27 November 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

Touch and Go email listserv message says they will end tour for final show in Chicago. Good - I'll get a chance to hear some reviews first to see if it's worth going to - because the 91 version of Jesus Lizard that I saw at Lounge Ax blew my mind and will forever remain in my top 3 of live shows.

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 27 November 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

Also - I had heard that the only reason that this did not happen for the Touch and Go 25th is that Mac McNeilly had disappeared and would not return contact about the reunion idea ... all heresay of course ...

It was released on vinyl only for Record Store Day, limited to 2000 copies and only for sale in independent stores in the USA. Precursor to the rest of the remastered (by someone from Shellac that isn't Albini I believe) reissues that will be out from September.

Yeah, I really should have made more of an effort to get my shit together and go and see them. Last time I saw them was about a billion years ago at the Camden Underworld and they were amazing. Still a bit scarred by the sight of David Yow dangling his ballbag in my face though.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 07:53 (seventeen years ago)

Aw there's some songs on there I'd've paid someone off to hear on Sunday night ('Blue Shot'; 'One Evening') but no complaints, I had a blast. I got the impression (from talking to people - I was only there on the last day) that Sunday's set was slightly less crazy than Saturday's - true?

display mane (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 07:54 (seventeen years ago)

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

That's not the exact setlist they played last night btw. The last 2 songs before they went offstage were Nub and Gladiator and Blockbuster was in the encore. Pretty sure they finished with 7 vs 8, and Wheelchair Epidemic was a few songs earlier, not last.

They were fucking amazing last night tho. Made up for not being able to afford ATP.

Anyone who has seen these reunion shows also seen them from early nineties and can compare? Way back then they were quite unbelievable- hilarious, mean and throat throttling all at the same time. That rhythm section was as tight as a ...tight, tight ...pair of jeans?Aanyone complete this simile? What is a tight thing that is not rude and would suit this crucial comparison? A crevass?

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 10 October 2009 11:39 (sixteen years ago)

Tight as [insert ageing celebrity]'s botoxed skin? I saw the Lizard at Pitchfork and they nailed it. They were better than the last couple times I saw them in the 90s. Yow was really concerned about being up to snuff and put himself through and intense workout regimen months ahead of time. He's no Iggy, but the next best thing! I got my ticket for their Nov Metro show.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 10 October 2009 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

So how are their reissues? I don't know if the remaster is necessary, as long as I have my automatic gain setting.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 10 October 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

The remastering certainly does Down some justice.

Albini claims the band live now is as good as they were in their heyday. I'll have to be the judge of that myself on 10/22. Yow told me he's been working out...

Nate Carson, Sunday, 11 October 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

Haven't seen the revitalized JL. Missed em at the Cap Hill Block Party (Seattle-area summer thing) a few months back, just cuz I hate the crowds and fenced-in feeling. They've got a lot to live up to, though, cuz the early 90s version was crushing. Up there with the best rock/metal shows I've ever seen.

I didn't see them the first time around but I'd be shocked if someone saw them now and felt they didn't deliver. I'm just back from their show in LA and I thought it was even better than I was hoping it would be.

I saw them friday and they were beyond great. I never saw them early on, so I cannot compare to their earlier shows. But whatever-- they were amazing. Black Elk were great as well.

van smack, Sunday, 25 October 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

I skipped them on Friday to see the Gossip, which I almost regret, but not really. Gossip were GREAT, and I saw the Jesus Lizard several times in the 90s. Glad to hear they still deliver tho.

From Perfect Sound Forever btw:

But these guys were never meant to be The Lizard indefinitely and now with them gone forever, I can settle into the comfortable assurance that my favorite band will never disappoint or embarrass me. They will never pull a Bauhaus and reform to cash in after a slew of questionable projects fail to bring long standing success for individual band members. This ain't gonna happen because there are probably less than a few thousand hardcore Jesus Lizard fans left in North America and that number probably dwindles every year. Good. This band is what used to pass for a hip rock critic's wet dream back when music writers were expected to be more adventurous than putting all their money on the goddamn White Stripes. So I will enjoy them in happy solitude and I don't care if you think it's ridiculous posturing to champion a band based on their inaccessibility. I will tell anyone to their face that Cheap Trick are an incredible band and at their prime. THOSE guys could fill entire stadiums with hysterical teenage chicks. Big deal.

You have got to be kidding me.

Good. This band is what used to pass for a hip rock critic's wet dream ....

I can't remember a single "critic" who was fair to them.
Who is a "hip rock critic"?

So I will enjoy them in happy solitude and I don't care if you think it's ridiculous posturing to champion a band based on their inaccessibility.

They're a great band, great live shows. What should be done about their body of work, I don't know.
They're just not everyone's cup of tea and I don't think there is much you can do about it. Some people
can't get past the vocalist, which makes it difficult for some people to appreciate their musical virtues.

I AM NOT A BALONEY SANDWICH (u s steel), Sunday, 22 November 2009 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

Baloney, the critic reviewing them for the W. Post the other night loved them (and he grew up on reading the many '90s critics who loved them--not sure who you were reading then?)and noted that they only played to a half-filled 930 club.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 22 November 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

The other night Yow commented on how DC was usually the pretty happening show and Baltimore was kind of dead but this tour it was completely the opposite. Said something about "Baltimore's the new LA, DC's the new San Francisco". The Baltimore crowd was nuts for 'em too, kids flying everywhere, cheering "like they're seeing Bruce Springsteen", plenty of crowd surfing. Yow spent a lot of time floating around in the audience. And it never let up, even through the 2nd encore. Towards the end of the show Yow said something like "Thank you. In all seriousness, thank you." in a kind of uncharacteristically sincere way. It was nice. The band got a hero's welcome and I think they appreciated it. Never got to see these guys the first time around, but I can't imagine the older Jesus Lizard is inferior in any way.

circa1916, Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

Curmudgeon you are right, we need to review the press some time, maybe I am wrong. I just hate how these great bands get forgotten, it's not like everyone has to like them or send all nineties bands on some corny reunion tour, but this was a great band and they did have detractors in my neck of the woods, like, "they're hostile because they don't want to be huge rock stars" and this kind of crap. I don't see what the point is, they were a formidable band and all they focus on is the singer.

I'm glad people are enjoying the shows!

I AM NOT A BALONEY SANDWICH (u s steel), Sunday, 22 November 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

OMG I just remembered some funny story someone told me about how they wouldn't listen to the Jesus Lizard because of their "offensive" name. I mean, I was like, why do you hate Jesus?

wish I would have seen one of the new york shows. saw em twice in the '90s and they were pretty killer. therapy / jesus lizard / helmet at mississippi nights in st. louis was a pretty formative show in my early punk rock lyfe

dmr, Monday, 23 November 2009 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

seem to recall them getting all kinds of respect in the 90s from the mags that covered indie & punk stuff, especially circa goat and liar. even the mixed reviews for the early stuff were mostly hedging on whether or not they were quite up to scratch acid's snuff. they got to be about as popular as i could ever imagine them getting, given the inbuilt obstacles, and the love as we still is still strong.

saw em at the 9:30 for goat (i think?) - amazing show and packed to the rafters. then a year or so later at the cat's cradle in NC w blues ex. even better. maybe one of the best shows i've ever seen and i only say maybe because i had so many drinks.

There was an ambulance outside of Metro after the Friday show. Someone said it was for Yow but I thought they were joking. Metro twittered on Saturday, "David Yow lives. The Jesus Lizard will play Metro as scheduled tonight. 12:51 PM Nov 28th." Anyone know what happened? The way the old little fucker exerted himself both at Pitchfork and that night, I was kind of worried he'd drop dead of a heart attack or stroke!

A bunch of my friends don't "get" J-Liz. It's taken me nearly 20 years to accept that unfortunate fact. One is even a fan of McLusky/Future of the Left. WTF!

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 3 December 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and not only are they just as good, they actually are BETTER than they were in the late 90s! Which is understandable, when a band gets toured ragged for so many years in a row, to return a decade plus later rejuvenated. Same thing with The Pixies on their reunion tour a few years back compared to a dismal show winter 90/91.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 3 December 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

Apparently, David was crowd-surfing during the second encore on Friday night and was dropped by the crowd, falling a good 7 feet hard to the floor. He got up and back and stage and attempted to finish but was visibly in pain and the show was ended. I guess enough people had left by the second encore to leave the crowd thinned out enough for this to happen -- a shame (also, what lame-os)

I didn't go Friday but went Saturday. He was singing from a stool for a lot of the show, but did get to prowl around a bit and even dove from the stage once or twice -- but definitely NOT the usual manic Lizard show. Still, it was bizarre and worth it just for the sight of Yow perched on that stool... Plus the band is still totally amazing. Just could not believe how awesome Mac's drum solo was at the end of the set

Wow got to echo this (also, what lame-os), for shame etc

Every time I see this thread bumped makes me think how great that show was last year - I was myself too lame to be into the Jesus Lizard when they were actually around, can't remember why, I think the name having Jesus in it when JAMC already did that turned me off them, whatever, stupidity. Or maybe it was Jesus Jones' fault, everything else is.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

LOL @ hilariousness of stage-diving dude dropped by thinning crowd.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

The Baltimore crowd was nuts for 'em too, kids flying everywhere, cheering "like they're seeing Bruce Springsteen", plenty of crowd surfing.

Part of the irony here is that Bruce was playing Baltimore the same night, to a sold-out arena. It seemed like Yow was bemused/amused at the corollary. And yes, the place was packed and people were going nuts. Shame to hear that the D.C. show was underattended.

The guy who played in between them and openers Double Dagger, can't remember his name, was on some kind of cosmic drone trip. Guitar, drumset, and sampler, with long vibrating vocall-less compositions. Perhaps a fuck you to the fans who came expecting all aggro action?

They haven't made any albums since the 90s, the new single doesn't make much of an impression but I'd be curious to hear the full-length

Nothing really in the Midwest, guessing they'll probably end up at Riot Fest given that late September gap and other festival appearances around the same time. Meh, I'd rather see them at their own show.

I saw them at Riot Fest (Chicago) in 2018 which I think was the last time they did it, and for whatever reason, Yow got really annoyed at everyone and told the crowd it would be the last time they'd ever do a festival, period. I see he's doing the Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, NC this fall so I guess he was just speaking in the moment. (Or he changed his mind.)

birdistheword, Thursday, 6 June 2024 04:07 (two years ago)

They’re also playing two other festivals in September so I’m guessing $$$$ helped him get over the annoyance.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 6 June 2024 04:18 (two years ago)

I'll never forget seeing them do a record release gig at CBGB in the mid 90s. At one point Yow started flinging copies of the vinyl record into the crowd and one zipped past me, nicking the side of my neck. Dangerous cat that Yow.

I once saw them on a double bill with Boss Hog, Christina was dressed in a very tight and very short dress, showing her see-through red underwear, and cowboy boots. the Jesus Lizard came up afterwards, and David was wearing christina's outfit, with everything hanging out. At one point he pointed at me and said "stop looking at my balls, you faggot!" excellent show, complete adrenaline rush

They’re an interesting band in that while I managed to see them twice in the 1990s - absolutely killed it both times - Liar is the only record of theirs that clicked for me. Otherwise it was a track here, a track there - “Mailman” on Shot is a good example.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 6 June 2024 11:57 (two years ago)

Which is to say that while I'm happy for them that they’re doing a new album/tour, I’m keeping my expectations measured.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 6 June 2024 11:58 (two years ago)

I listened to the song again last night and on second time through I thought it sounded pretty good, I don't have great expectations for the record but I would love to see them again, maybe 2025 they will schedule some Midwest US dates but they also avoided Mpls on their last reunion run (despite rumors that a First Ave date was more or less confirmed)

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 6 June 2024 13:03 (two years ago)

Saw them twice during the last reunion run. No reason to believe this time will be any less good, having seen the Yow/Flipper show in the meantime to confirm he's still got that unhinged tendency.

I listened to Rack again this morning, it is pretty great! I wish like, anyone else in the world had recorded it cuz the songs are pretty great but the sound of the album is a little gray/murk-y/home demo-y but it's also a million times better than it has any right to be, Yow's singing (yes) is excellent, a real highlight
