Say something *NICE* about your Fellow ILM'ers

In order to combat the intense negativity of an earlier thread...
This thread is posted so that members of the ILM Posse can say decent, kind, positive, healthy and nourishing compliments about fellow ILM'ers.
Who are your heroes? Who's advice do you count on? Who on ILM is nice to their mothers and always give generously to worthy charities.

I would like to nominate Siegbran, Ned Raggett, Anthony Miccio...and for sheer entertainment value: Alex in NYC.

Okay. Your turn...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess is a fucking good writer.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Somebody say something nice about me.

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Norman, Jim and Marcello are cool cats and BETTER writers than all of you! (Trying to start an ego war. Now fight amongst yourselves on who is the better 'writer') (Whatever the fuck that means!) (Capote is a better writer than all of you!)

Adam A's last name is not Apple.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Um...You have really nice...uh...shoes, Adam A.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not a better writer than most people here, believe me..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, so thats one vote for jess, one vote for Truman Capote and one (dubious) one for Adam A.
I shall return in a week to see who 'won'

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Capote and Harper Lee kick everyone's ass. So don't worry.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

maura is the best.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Di kicks quiet ass against the mod ego. Quiet ass kicking is the best sometimes.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I still want to grow up to be just like Ned.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm almost convinced samson is not doomie. almost.

i love you all which is why i'm so hard on all of you

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Who cares, Jess? Who really cares? : - D

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm flattered by your compliment, Lord Custos, though I don't know what I've done to deserve it. Too many kickass people on ILM to mention. I love this place and it helps me get through these long shifts at work. Now if only I could FORCE you all to appreciate "Young And The Hopeless" and "Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i also think justyn dillingham is highly under-rated. samson i don't know why you said me, i never post anything of note here.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll be dead in the cold cold ground before i recognize missourri or either of those albums

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoyed your post on Sunday. Guess that's why I emailed you. You made me chuckle. Anybody that makes me chuckle on here gets my vote!

: - D

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess that is the most quality Abe Simpson ref., good on ya

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett, Alex in NYC and Jess are the only 3 people who are really memorable, I think. I don't think Ned has the ability to be mean, I pretty much always agree with Alex, and even though I disagree a lot, Jess always has a very original opinion.

David Allen, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm flattered by your compliment, Lord Custos, though I don't know what I've done to deserve it
You just seem to say alot of pithy things sometimes, Anthony.
Also occasionally pithy: dave q, mark s, nitsuh/nabisco and Julio.

See! ILM is a Celebration of Liiiiiiffffeee!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Great, now I am going to hear Abe Simpson's voice everytime I read Jess's post. Is it not enough that he lives in Olympia??? I vote John as well!

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess... Lumbago free since 1998.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I can offer plenty of pith. yeth, indeed.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoy reading gygax and hstencil's posts.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yep, gygax is the Alex-in-NYC that doesn't demand that we honour the fire; and hstencil is the Ned Raggett of the 22nd century.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to go for the dark horse here and say Momus. He's like herpes- he's pretty noticeable, then goes into remission, and then when you least expect it...outbreak! But in a nice way. I enjoy Momus, not *like* herpes since I haven't had them before but you get the picture. The unpredictability... and the eyepatch.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I will not touch that pro-Momus post until it has been sterilized, cleaned and disinfected by a trained specialist.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

a virtual space inhabited, at least intermittently, by both Sinkah and Kogan is, intermittently, a lot more than just 'nice'

(okeh, that's the fumble-y fan post outta the way then, well) 's been intermittently funtudinous to learn somethin 'bout the most of you, really

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

these postorz own me: ned, alex nyc, jess, gygax, custos, nickalicious, j0hn mountaingoat, all daves, super duper jody beth rosen, m. skidmarks, m matos:::::...:: u guyz all make me come back here more often than ile cuz i like to go on the net to forget my real life and talk about music.

guys whose musical suggestions always help me out when i im buying records: seigbran and j0hn d.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim Finney is my favorite current music writer. There are so many good writers here.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, Spencer, like Harper Lee, Truman Capote and Norman Mailer. I know exactly what you mean!

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

yah tim is great i forgot.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim Finney posts here? Details!!!

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna say Chuck E if nobody else is gonna. That I still read Stairway To Hell so often scares the shit out of me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Cozen, use the search feature and enjoy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

hstencil is the Ned Raggett of the 22nd century.

Whoa.

hstencil, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

He has come from the future to warn us!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"Britney Spears will take over the world, and will...eat...your...soul!"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa.
Why do I mentally hear Keanu Reeves (in the Matrix) when I read this?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the way Ned makes a point of welcoming any new poster that announces themselves whilst not even bothering to defend 'Loveless' anymore cos he don't need to, and the whole Cult of Ned vibe is funny

i like the cut of Dan perry's jib, but his reputation goes before him round here clearly...and i'm a bit of a yankophile but all the americans are fabulous from what i can tell - sorry i have to round you all up like that

i like how Ronan enthuses about dance/club music as he does, i don't mean to sound patronising but it reminds me of me back in 1996

i like how i already knew Matt 'pisshead' DC before i realised he posted on ILM as well

i like how j0e, the mastermind behind what was the best Bellatrix website out there many moons ago, has now also turned up and continues to have me in stitches frequently

i have no real opinion of the writing skillz of anyone here though really.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and i like how jess takes the heat off me for painfully adept Simpsons refs

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

hstencil, what this really means is that you'd better get started now, you've got 16 trillion record reviews to write if you want to secure that legacy.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do I mentally hear Keanu Reeves (in the Matrix) when I read this?

'Cuz that's exactly the effect I was going for!

hstencil, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM, you are my friend!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

creeeeepy

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

the whole Cult of Ned vibe is funny

That it is. And hstencil's a fine feller, he is. Thanks to all. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex in NYC is great. His passion for all that is Killing Joke, even the much-maligned 'Brighter than a Thousand Suns', inspires me to new heights of flame-honouring.

justin s., Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonathan Williams makes me smile. ^_^

ddb, hstencil, jack cole, msp, shakey mo (alphabetical order): kit bff.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM is like a safe haven commodity in times of war.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

In the year+ I have been hanging around here, I've learned A SHITLOAD. More often than not it's frustrating. Every week there's something that comes up and it's like "jesus I had no IDEA." I end up hating my sheltered kidhood even more. Thanx!!

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I like most people here (okay truthfully to hugely varying degrees) but I wanted to say that I think jess is a fucking awesome thinker/writer/constructive-dickhead just in case he thinks I think otherwise.

Also Spencer yr cheque's in the mail :-)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I DO have nice shoes! That's actually the one thing I like to hear most in life. I always liked you Custos. I like how you start silly threads like this one, and for every one that just gets laughed at there is one that restores my faith in my shoes. I also enjoy Momus. His idealism doesn't bother me. It's reassuring. It makes me like life. Dave Q is a wonderful man and I wish more people responded to his threads. Stevem also seems like an admirable fellow.

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

(ps. i really do love most each and every one of you, and you have all made me laugh or taught me something or at least made me think once if nothing else. i don't really want to name names because that seems kind of elitist.

also, tim, nothing but love. you know that.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I usually end up really liking the people I once found most annoying.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Most common backhanded compliment tossed my way: "You know, I used to think you were really annoying."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Which is sort of how I feel about ILM.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I certainly didn't mean you, Jody!

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i still do. it's an ongoing project.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

haha crosspost!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I certainly didn't mean you, Jody!

I'm not vain enough to assume you did. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

no, she's vain enough to assume that various ilx people love her though.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I prob'ly think this post is about me.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

popshots dave introduced me to mr. bruno. plus he is a cute 27 year old smokin' menthols. marry me?

Brock K. (Brock K.), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Curtis Stephens: ILM, you are my friend!
That was so touching, Curtis...I, I, I, I'm all verklempt...talk amongst yerselves...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:45 (twenty-three years ago)

There may be a chance that kate would appear less annoying if she didn't have to mention her band or boyfriend in every one of her posts but I wouldn't count on it.

Gritona, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't have a problem with people mentioning their bands. in fact i think people should do it more often

electric tugboat of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

This place is filled with intelligent people with very broad musical interest. There are so many bright people that I think the idea of an ILM mafia composed of four posters who runs the boards is a bit silly. ILM has definitely opened my eyes to a lot of things that I would not have payed attention to otherwise.

I definitely miss Andy Kellman and Tim Finney. Tim Finney was always wrong about dance music, but that is why I liked him so much. Ned is a sweetie. Jess is a smart ass, but is usually otm and has interesting insights. I read the piece on Magazine in Stylus mag ysterday, good stuff. ALEX NYC is the poster that I identify with a single band more than anyone else. Andy K is still the best in my book tho.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I smoke? Sheeeeit, no wonder I hate myself.

Also, I'm 28, Brocky - if we're gonna be startin' something, I wanna be honest & unfront.

My love of ILM is an understanding, deep-rooted love - I'm often unable to reciprocate in fitting ways, and sometimes I get annoyed, and the sex is a little vanilla, but the love persists. Polyamory never felt so strange (and that's a good thing).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, it's totally gauche to mention your band

cantankerous tumor reunion in '03 baby (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, (pistolwhippin) I (nexus 6 series) totally (pistolwhippin) agree with (nexus 6 sereis) that statement, (pistolwhippin) completely.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What ever happened to Gareth and Dj Martian? they were good folks as well.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Sterling is underrated. Oh, I think he's WRONG plenty, but the man has all sorts of idiosyncratic ideas in his noggin that he's dying to get out. We should help!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i like kates posts a lot, and i don't care if she talks about DDBs and the lollies till the cows come home. i don't even care that she hates riot grrrl.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I like kate's posts too (LOL) but am perplexed why she seems perplexed that the Reverend Horton is perplexing her.

fires at dawn, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

as far as ILXOR as a whole, i honestly can say that you guys have brought to me a new way to listen music. It's hard to put into text, but the variety of bands this board has opened me up to has sincerely meant a lot to me. thanks so much for this board Tom!!!

Brock K. (Brock K.), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex in NYC, Tracer Hand, Yancey, Dan Perry, and Dave Q are the greatest men who ever lived, or at least since the last time I said that. Also geeta often cracks me the hell up.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Diamond is now on the love list! He's passed out copies of a sound file of Yngwie Malmsteens Tokyo Airport freakout.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex in NYC, Tracer Hand, Yancey, Dan Perry, and Dave Q are the greatest men who ever lived

*sniff* I am ignored. < / forced attention-seeking >

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Something nice, because I've got that nice melty painkiller feeling at the moment (bad back; it's part of my "faux-fogey" routine):

Jess - You're one of the most screwed-up people I know. You're a contrarian pain in the ass and I don't take a good deal of the things you say at face value. Either way, you're hella smart and you often make me rethink my own positions on things, which I'm usu. unwilling to be arsed with in the presence of lesser men.

Matos - Good on ya, sir. Your enthusiasm and obsession-compulsion are infectious. I like yr approach to music writing -- knowledgable, erudite w/o being flashy, concerned with what music does and what it's supposed to do (although I wish you'd lighten up on Cat Power). I'm jealous of how well you (and other ILM posters, like Ronan and Tim Finney) write about dance music.

Dave Q - I often read your posts and wonder why you bother hanging around idiots like us. Even when you're full of shit (which I suspect is a lot of the time) you're brilliant. You have a way of diplomatizing and bringing together the elements of an incredibly fractured music world; you're a brave man and a GREAT listener and I endlessly admire how you build all these new frameworks by tossing the rockskool book out of a speeding car like it wuz an irritating girlfriend.

Dan Perry - Thank you for sticking up for the singers. Vocals don't get discussed in earnest nearly enough.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony Miccio's dedication to the cause of Good Charlotte is touching and near to my heart, and I love him for it.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

because of ilm i no longer have an immovable opinion about ANYTHING

because of ilm i've developed an irritating tendency to argue on behalf of the critical underdog

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

*sniff* I am ignored. < / forced attention-seeking >

Pffft. Amateur.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Another name I look for when I'm scanning a long thread is Sundar. Always interested in what he has to say even when it's about music I don't know or care about (which is a lot, but sometimes his posts change that.)

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Mark. I often find your comments thoughtful and insightful as well and I enjoy your Pitchfork writing when I visit there.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this the thread where we can all act like fags and get away with it?

fairies wear boots, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Part of me is hurt (but unsurprised) that no one has offered an opinion of me here. Another part of me is relieved (but unsurprised) that no one mentioned me on the "most obnoxious" thread.

Call me Mr. Cellophane.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread reminded me why I still read ILM.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:01 (twenty-three years ago)

(as in people who know 500 times more about music then me discussing it with some passion and humor.) (that is all the sucking up to the ILM mafia I can bear for now.)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I like discussing post-war classical stuff with Julio. I should probably try to do it more often.

(There are plenty of other posters I like as well, of course.)

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

"i love you guys!"
m.

msp, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:14 (twenty-three years ago)

(Oh although I did get one of those virus-type e-mails from Julio not long ago. That wasn't as cool...)

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody, just for you I'm going to say this once and only once: I saw Cat Power on Letterman last night. She was OK. I think I have to lay down now.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

If I said everything nice I wanted to about the people here it would end up being about as long as a Jay-Z vs. Nas thread, so let me extend my gratitude to the majority of you for keeping me honest, on my toes, coming back, and intrigued. I will undoubtedly get to some of you more specifically later, but let this do for now.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I DONT KNOW YOU ANYMORE

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I liked that Letterman performance as well. She reminded me of Melanie. But, I gave my heart away years ago to Lisa Germano and I only have so much room for dysfunctional yowlers in my life. Anyway, I was gonna say that my buddy Frank Kogan hepped me to ILM many moons ago and I wish that everyone was a little more annoying cuz like Missy this here cyber park bench is soooo addictive. It's my number one hangout for when I wanna avoid this mortal coil.

Scott Seward, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Matos is a nice guy, in an actions speak louder than words way.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:37 (twenty-three years ago)

...except you, Jess

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:39 (twenty-three years ago)

this cat power thing has shaken me to the very core of my being i think it's time for bed

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Q's posts are the most wonderful examples of surrealism I've read. I can't tell if he's a super-genius, Syd Barrett, or both.

There may be a chance that kate would appear less annoying if she didn't have to mention her band or boyfriend in every one of her posts but I wouldn't count on it

Kate is rock and roll incarnate - she can mention the Lollies and DDBs as long as she wants. She's inevitably has something different and/or funny to say on damn near every thread she posts to.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

it was a fleeting impression! c'mon, gimme a break!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

of the people I've never really interacted with here, let me give a shout to Trayce, whose posts are invariably wonderful

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, let me second that! She's a good 'un. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't we move this over to ILE? This is as much fun as Nicole Kidman's Oscar speech.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

before we do, can i just say:

kate and nathalie and di smith make me feel real and i want to marry ALL OF THEM! ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the fact that every time I end up in the pub saying "God ILM was shit yesterday" I come back the next day and find about 50 threads I want to read and never get anything done.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh god, not another one of these? Well, I reserve special mentions for Horace, JBR, gygax!, and Anthony Miccio. And Tracer, who seems to have disappeared....Oh, and Jess. Jess, too.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex in NYC is one of my favourites I must say, most of the people mentioned here deserve respect though. I should point out that I was blown away by Mike Taylor's post on the Derrick May thread when I searched for stuff on ILM about him, even if I didn't fully agree with all his points.

Also though the thing is that there are people who seldom are on the same threads as me and vice versa on ILM who you know are cool cos of ILE, I mean if I could wave a wand and make us all able to hear and talk about everything then I would.

Stevem, gareth, siegbran and michael wells (conspicuous by absence) tend to keep the house threads ticking over, though things have been a bit quiet lately (as much to do with lack of lots of new stuff as anything else). I think something like the junior senior thread is a good example of why I continue to post here.

Don't extend this to ile, I won't get mentioned there either (too late :)

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

The following are all friendly, informative, insightful, wise and/or funny (as are 95% of people here): nabisco, mark s, Tom, Marcello, M Matos, Ned, dave q.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s and Marcello for critical insights and ideas, nickalicious for humanistic funk, always keep and eye out for Kenan and kilian (the former cos we seem to argue about what we agree on, the latter cos he's just a very decent, enthusiastic music-loving young chap who seems shorn of all pretentions and prejudices), Ned for his encyclopedic knowledge and devilish good-nature (he must have sold his soul for that eternally sunny and graceful disposition), Martin and kate for self-effacing wisdom and enthusiasm, Ronan cos he's a decent human being with a good mind, dave q because I don't understand and really want to (and because I fear/suspect I may end up not dissimilar from him give time), Tom for his love of pop as it actually really is in our lives as opposed to some abstract godhead (plus for trying to open up the 80s to proper appreciation), Dan Perry for smut and smarts in equal measure. People I need to pay more attention to the work/writing/posts of = Sundar, Momus, jess... With possibly three or four exceptions I think everyone here has contributed enormously to my love of music in one way or another... ALL music has the potential to be wonderful and great and fun, we just need to see how... Thank you! xxx

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigh. This is on ILE now.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan - what's your opinion of the Furureshock album? The bit of blurb next to it on the rack in HMV seems interesting, but I've not seen or heard owt about it anywhere else.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only heard their remixes of stuff which have tended to be kinda dull, I remember Siegbran I think said they had a great live show, but I doubt the album is up to much, at least I've not heard any of the tracks or anyone talking about them.

If you haven't got Iron Stylings by Medicine8, then it might be worth a purchase, it's pretty fun stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i come to ilm more for the wide range than individuals, but i suppose there are people i particularly enjoy reading. such as...

anthony miccio, nick southall, ronan, stevem, tom, ned, marcello, julio, russ t, melissa w...

among many others...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, finally got a mention.

I come here to read as many of you as i can and always learn something (as jess was saying).

this board (ILM and ILE) has changed me (for the better) but in a way i can't describe. I love you all.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh, I should've mentioned Julio and Melissa too - we have radically different tastes and attitudes and approaches, argue like cat & dog (they more than I these days), probably dislike each other a bit on the surface and yet (I imagine) are probably psychologically pretty similar on some level and (again I imagine [this time cos I def. feel this way]) actually really respect each other...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to make a special mention for everyone who replied to my mix CD thread. The response gave me a warm fuzzy feeling not dissimilar to being taken in by a family of bears. Musical bears.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The Banana Splitz? (were they bears?)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I think one was.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

But which one is he?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

He's on the right.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned's at the bottom

above, left to right: kate, tom, sarah

haha, i am gonna pay for that i'm sure

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

PHOTOSHOPORZ to thread!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, yes, of course.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Any of you in danger of losing your jobs for spending most of the working hours on ILM/NYPLM/BLissblog/CoM etc? I should have been sacked ages ago! ILM though - best site on the web.

David Gunnip, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a Banana Split? That is THE nicest thing anyone has EVER said about me. I feel all warm and fuzzy. And grinning like a giant stuffed cat.

kate, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

ah thats good, i was worried i'd hurt your feeelings. and Tom is only an elephant in that he is wise, majestic and hunted down for his precious ivory.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to mug Ned for his guitar, though... wow, that is a cool Vox!

kate, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, i've just been whinging on my webdiary about what a patriarchal hellhole this place is. but you've heard me say it before. and you didn't listen then, and you won't listen now. this place isn't even about music, as far as i can see. for many of you, its about becoming part of a canon of music writing, or supporting that canon. i'm tired of fucking phonies, thats right i'm tired of you.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

But... but, Di! How can it be patriarchal when we've had SEVEN threads about Cat Power?

::ducks::

I hate you all. Let's have hate sex.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Di that was a pretty cheap shot.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the usual suspects, which is pretty much all of you. Your all down in my book.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't kick Di out of the patriachy. She does speak some truth.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

She is trying to form a Matriarchy!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be more interesting than a Patriachy. Why do these threads always sound like Oscar speeches to me? Why?

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Di is official the Michael Moore of this Oscar party!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

its funny how whenever anyone attempts any kind of critique of how gendered this place is, some of you go out of your way to turn it into a joke. thats exactly what i would expect from any masculinist anything.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer the term "sausage party" but Di has a point. The canon of music writing thing is/was uncomfortably true which is one reason I'm not bothered with doing it these days. You reach a certain point and you think, oh hell, why bother? And then you realise that the reasons you had been bothering weren't exactly good ones.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Coz IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII... wanna BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE in the oligarchy!!!

kate, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Q, I think, is one of the most interesting and engaging posters. I dig his style and sense of humour but more than that, I like the crazy rate at which his synapses fire. Like a guitar-crazed Arthur Craven. And the guy can rant proper.

I like a lot of Mark S posts too, especially when he addresses a huge argument with a single line complete with little diagramatics which merely confuse my attempts to decipher what he means. I spend a lot of time on the hardcore threads trying to get my head around where he’s coming from.

Dom Passantino is one of the funniest posters I reckon; really dark sometimes which I dig.

J0hn Darn1elle is probably the biggest dude on the boards. Hstencil is valuable too, seems to really get up people’s noses sometimes. Marcello Carlin cos he’s clued. your null fame – just because of the name which is genius. Far too many genius posters to mention though, I suppose.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I like all the dudes in the canon.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Di that is why I requested this thread be on ILE. I think it parodies the board and the reasons why people use this board - it should not be for 'Oh, you are a great writer' 'No, your a great writer'. It should be discussing music because you are 'in love with music'.

So I kind of get where you are coming from. I appreciate the 'balls' it took to say it. And I understand that whilst feeling the same way I am not of the mind to take the usual whirlwind of 'troll' 'troll' and 'troll' that accompanies any criticism of the patriachy.

So I am an ILM coward. Whilst you are not.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

And lists like this reinforce the patriachy. The usual suspects are mentioned. The usual suspects give the usual high fives inbetween the posts. But hey if an internet forum makes people happy then I'm not going to complain.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

it should not be for 'Oh, you are a great writer' 'No, your a great writer'. It should be discussing music because you are 'in love with music'

to me, good writer is synonymous with "good thinker," and that IS what this board is for.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

But hey if an internet forum makes people happy then I'm not going to complain.

too late.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

You rock, Samson. Let's FAP it!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Pah. Subjective. Do you hate fun?

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

(irony)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think there's anything wrong with the compliments and backslapping - a lot of people here are nervous or struggling wannabe-professional writers and internet shout-outs can be very supportive. But what Di said struck home to me personally - I probably did start writing cos I wanted to be like some of the Great Pop Writers and that aspect of ILM has its downsides.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's shout out some new people, then! That's really what I'm going to say. I want to give a shout out to EVERYONE who contributes to ILM. Without you there would be no ILM.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i like girl scout heroin.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It's everyone and not specific people that make this board what it is and is not. I like Nordicskillz, Russ T, Stevem, hell, everyone who responds to a thread about a band that I'm interested in. Anybody that passes time at work with me. YOU ALL RULE.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

to me, good writer is synonymous with "good thinker," and that IS what this board is for.

well thats all subjective, ain't it tho. and its excluding people who don't express themselves well with the written word. there are other forms of communication, you know. like MUSIC for instance. that thing you purport to love.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

''to me, good writer is synonymous with "good thinker," and that IS what this board is for.''

oh not it isn't!

its also for ppl to share thoughts on a reciord they've heard, or to discuss things that surround a re (or any silly stuff). its not just 'critical insights'. some writers, when they get hold of a thread, have a way of not being clear abt things and sometimes that can be frustrating. di has a point but i'm not tired of ilm.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I pressed submit quickly. she picked up on the same line and i thought she would've eventually.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with the first part of JBR's statement, but I have been thinking a bit about this lately - I don't really come on here to express anything specific about music, because someone has probably already done so far better than I can. I often find myself just responding in monosyllabic agreement, but I still feel like posting rather than just reading. This also makes me question my responses to music-if I don't really have an opinion or theory on a piece of music other then an immedaite visceral reaction, then am I only listening to it superficially? ILM is both good and bad for this, but it IS good to read writing by people who have thought about music. Shouldn't stop neanderthals like me grunting "yeah, it's cool" in response, though.

Sorry, back to subject.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Has this board even once mentioned JEM? More fun than any damn pop band.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

That said, the constant backslapping is probably a bit clubby and off-putting for newbies with something to say!!!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

As is the term "newbies", I suppose.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell I get excited when somebody responds to something I wrote. Even if it's a 'Hell yeah!'. JBR's statement was very subjective. One man's thinker is another man's frustrated academic plumber. What is this board for? Well, sometimes when I am writing I have a cigarette break, put on a specific song, look it up on the board, and then read everyone's comments whilst listening to the track. I enjoy doing that. Is that for great thinkers? No. Sometimes at three in the morning when I've just finished working on a masterpiece (subjective, of course) and I am about to go to bed, reading the thoughts of ILX can make it feel like there is about a thousand people all babbling about a song that I dig. That's cool. I just get frustrated by this 'great thinkers' theory. I think it stops people from freely expressing themselves when others put limitations on what one can and cannot express. It's a huge internet space. There is room here for EVERYONE. That is why it's cool.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The canon of music writing thing is/was uncomfortably true which is one reason I'm not bothered with doing it these days. You reach a certain point and you think, oh hell, why bother? And then you realise that the reasons you had been bothering weren't exactly good ones.

Well, damnit, a primary reason I persist -- not just on ILx but everywhere online in general -- is because I *DO* want to add to the Canon of Great Music Writing, I *DO* want praise, I *DO* want to leave a mark, I *DO* want to "say something," etc. etc. etc. and to hell with whether my intentions are dubious or not. They probably are but I've got so many more pressing things to worry about.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the canon is an exclusionary force, and if you want to be part of that, good for you. but give me one good reason why i should support it.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

the canon is an exclusionary force, and if you want to be part of that, good for you. but give me one good reason why i should support you.

I hate to sound like a schmuck here, but I wasn't exactly soliciting support.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure I understand how not wanting to solicit support in creating Great Canonical Stuff is equivalent to not wanting to justify my desire to create said Stuff.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

...not wanting to solicit support in creating Great Canonical Stuff...

I should add: in this particular instance, on this particular thread.

I'm just here for the free downloads.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a Michaelangelo. Matos. Fan.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I resent being told how much we do or don't like music, I think it's obvious lots of people here really do love music, from the type of personal questions continuously asked as well as from the fact that people actually want to write about it for a living. It's a shitty job the same way it's a shitty hobby, I can't speak for anyone else but I'd much rather if I enjoyed watersports or jogging or accountancy because life would be far easier.

I don't even want to go on and on because it's lame to even have to take part in this kind of whinge contest about whether ILM likes music, but seriously please think a bit more before making this kind of attack, it really really is just wearying and unfair.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM is not called ILM because ILM, if you see what I mean.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

why is this shit even on this thread? do people have reading comprehension problems?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I resent being told how much we do or don't like music

WHEN did i ever say that ILMers don't love music? i just said THAT'S NOT WHAT THIS BOARD IS ABOUT.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with jess there. Having kicked and screamed the first few times I came here I now see ILM's occasional tendancy to intellectualise music and bring in crit. and cult. theory etcetera as a rather wonderful thing. 'Canonical' stuff and people attempting 'to be great writers' is easily avoidable amidst the nattering about pop music - I come here for both. Sure, occasionally I feel out of my depth, but all that does, if you aproach it right, is teach you to swim better. All this stuff about it being a patriarchy I can see in one sense because a lot of the more frequent and vocal posters (who are the ones who attract the most attention largely due to their conspicuous presence) are male, but what the hell has that got to do with anything other than accident of birth and people having enough time on their hands to reply to lots of things often at length? Like Ronan says, we wouldn't be here if we didn't all love music, but just like everything else in life we each have our own approaches and, as Samson said, there is room here for all.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd just like to say that the only reason I continue to read this thread is in hopes that Anthony posts that picture of Fred Durst and Rod Stewart.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that's a pretty cheap distinction.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Between Fred and Rod? I think I'm more Rod than Fred.

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i would like nothing more than to see more female posters on ilm

i would hate nothing more than to see it degenerate into diaryland foolishness, no matter what the gender

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i think the women who want a stronger female presence on ilm should post more on ilm.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Diaryland is SO much lamer than blogs, damn!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Cripes! When did this thread sprout up out of the ether? Last night? Sorry, I was out seeing "Bend it Like Beckham" with the wife and having a mightily expensive pizzette at some ridiculously overpriced bistro/meat-market. Not very rock'n'roll, I know. But, y'know, c'est la guerre.

These threads always make me nervous because they're sort've like Oscar acceptance speeches. If I don't thank some of the folks who've cited me, I might as well give thanks to Hitler in terms maintaining good relations with my fellow ILM'rs (note "Kids in the Hall" allusion, tv-heads!). That said, contrary to popular mythology, I do not sit here at my keyboard all day, spewing Budweiser apoplectically all over the monitor every time some whistleheaded, pabulum-addicted cheese monkey dishonors the fire (there simply aren't enough hours in the day nor cans of beer to match the task). While it may seem like I get riled beyond all semblance of reason, I actually enjoy arguing about music.

I'd like to particularly cite Anthony Miccio for his admirable defense of those deplorable poseur tykes in Good Charlotte. While I hammer away at them with the relentless animosity of Buddha-loathing Taliban, Anthony stands his ground, and I respect that (though I don't respect the band in question). I've quite enjoyed sparring with Chaki (Visage ain't goths, brother!), Coolio Julio, Mark S., and even Jess. Hats off to the ubiquotous Ned R., Tom, Lord Custos, Tracer Hand, Dan Perry, the good Doctor C. and the remarkably twisted Side-Taker Dave Q. Fists aloft and voices raised high in exhortative affirmation for Jody Beth Rosen, Dave Allen, Hstencil, Justin S., Mr.Diamond, M.Matos, Ronan, Nordicskillz, Mike Taylor, Yancey, Horace, Dan Perry and resident vixen Lady Ally of Clan Kearney.

Here's To ILM!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Although I generally stay out of the discussions on the "canon" and somesuch, I do generally read them, and am very glad to have this site because it provides me with powerful insights into the minds of critics; ILM has at the very least prepared me for what I'm getting into as I continue to release more music.

Not to mention that Alex in NYC certainly has a way with words: "...spewing Budweiser apoplectically all over the monitor every time some whistleheaded, pabulum-addicted cheese monkey dishonors the fire..." = linguistic ambrosia

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi! Watersports, yeah!

What's up with no one mentioning the godlike Fritz Wollner?

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess if I want to start making these lists I have to start acting like a combatative dickhead more and more often.

I dig almost everyone on the boards but please let me give a shoutout to Kim, who doesn't post quite so often but usually says something pretty insightful when she does. I'll also say YO to the other Anthony, Mr. Easton, for constantly sticking up for the most maligned of genres (even when I don't agree with him). All my other usual suspect have already gotten namedropped several times over, so.

I still blame Ned.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm starting to think I should really post more often

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I have probs w/ crits who don't clarify what they say on certain threads.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, and you made "Walking With Thee" your album of the year. That took chutzpah...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Lord Custos Epsilon is one of my faves because he isn't nice to me, though he probably doesn't remember not being nice to me.
Post a link to thread where I was mean to you; and I'll decide if -- in retrospect -- I was bad enough to require apologizing.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Was this incident back in the "Lord Custos Alpha"-era? I *was* a bit evil back then.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Arguments aside, I'd also like to put in a mention for the fantastic Donut Bitch. Thanks.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

...I do not sit here at my keyboard all day, spewing Budweiser apoplectically all over the monitor every time some whistleheaded, pabulum-addicted cheese monkey dishonors the fire...
Daaaamn, if I hadn't already used up all my forehead real estate tattooing "Bombing for peace is like fucking for virginity." onto my head, I'd have tattooed Alex's little gem there instead!

Or maybe, I could add below the word "virginity" the phrase "...you whistleheaded, pabulum-addicted cheese-monkey"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, yes indeed. DB is a god among men. :-)

I still blame Ned.

Damn! And I'm in the Banana Splits now, am I? "Tra la la, tra la la la..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Custos: You were a little mean to me here., but I guess you proved that you were joking after I stopped looking. I was hoping you were calling me a yuppie scumbag for being an accountant or something (I'm pretty poor for an accountant), not that you would've known that I was. I guess you were kidding. I withdraw any reference to you being one of my faves!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, I see.
No need to get frestrated. I don't actually hold that belief (ie that Eno is a rich snobs Gary Numan...thats Andreas Wollenweiders job.); I would also like to state -- for the record -- that I am not anti-accountant. My *Mom* is an accountant.
The Brian Eno comment was a sudden, impulsive, off-the-cuff jape meant to take the "Gary Numan is a poor man's Brian Eno" and play it backwards. This must be done to ensure that there are no important Messages from Satan that need to be interpreted.
We must always take all posts and play them backwards. Just to be sure.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm normally pretty macho.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate: Thanks. Nordic: Thanks?

Now it's my turn. I know I'm pretty out of the loop since I don't have much posting time (this being a rare day off), and I don't have the FAP-facilitating locale allayall others do, but:

-JBR, for tons of reasons (wicked taste, funny, the ideal balance of pop/esoteric enthusiasm I wish I had) but also because it's mostly her doing that I'm probably permanently ensconced in the blogosphere as "the guy who wrote that Rock Critic Guide"
-Matos, for representing the Lifter Puller Click in the 03, fuckrz
-Nickalicious, since he's turned out pretty damn funny and throws bikes at assholes and makes me feel not entirely alone in my indie-rap dorkness
-Dan Perry for making me forget he hates the Replacements with every straight line Search-and-Double-Entendre mission
-John D. L33tsp33k because I like his music (what I have heard of it at least)
-Dom for knowing what the fuck I mean when I talk about "kayfabe"

And the rest of you are all right in a general sense. Watch, as with every list I post I remember someone ridiculously important I forgot ten minutes later.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I meant it as a compliment, Nate. ;)

Ally, you are Highlander, one of many reasons to admire you.

Kate Silver and Jeanne Fury have started posting, yay, something they both need to do more often. (Kate, you never wrote me back about my wallet! What the fuzznuck?!)

The funniest thing is that Rod and Fred are right near the "Playboy Cyber Club".

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Rod Stewart is slightly at an angle... so just how short does that make Fred Durst?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

pink leather. golly.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Does the male dominated canon include Limp Bizkit's "Livin' It Up" and Rod's "Crazy About Her"? It should.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll say something nice about anybody who downloads these two songs, listens to them ALL THE WAY THROUGH and says what they think about 'em.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot to mention BurmaKitty for her unswerving dedication to Mission of Burma,....a devotion matched only by my fundamentalist adherence to the doctrine of Killing Joke.

And I don't know if she counts as ILM or ILE, but Felicity is heckaswell too.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there a canon of good music writing-(thinking) on ILM? Maybe. But the answer isn't to say that valuing good writing excludes those who can't write well and that we should therefore not value good writing. It is to ask, "well, what constitutes 'good' writing on ILM? Is it writing like Christgau, Reynolds or [x], something else entirely, or all these things and more? If the current standards for good writing are objectionable, how can we improve them?" The writers on this board are, for the most part, 'famous' only within the context of this board, so the received wisdom on their quality or otherwise is necessarily limited and definitely changeable (ie. Di if you want to see the criteria changed, it is comparatively easier than, say, changing the rock music canon)

The sheer diversity of people who have been hauled up for a bit of love on this thread, and the diversity of their writing styles, suggests to me that the hypothetical canon in question is not really monolithic on the level of the patriarchy. Although it goes without saying that patriarchal undercurrents are at work here just as they are in any "community", particularly with such a preponderence of male contributors, I'm not sure if the love in this thread is specifically or unusually patriarchal.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 27 March 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

There's an overwhelmingly lopsided ratio of men to women here.

Most of the women on ILX don't post on ILM that often.

I'm usually the only woman in the top 20. Once I checked and I was the only woman in the top 50.

It would really make me feel very good to see more female posters on the upper echelons of the ILM statscock.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, then it could be a statsclit

(ducks, hides)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 27 March 2003 01:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i bet you do

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 27 March 2003 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

It would really make me feel very good to see more female posters on the upper echelons of the ILM statscock.

And if you actually want to be part of the "canon," talk about, you know, music and stuff.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

marcello is an excellent writer,i have bought cd's based on his writing several times, and there are lots more things i'm looking foreward to hearing after reading about them on the church of me

i wish i understood more of mark s' posts, but the ones i do are great (especially that black sabbath/zepplin one)and some day i will get around to reading all of the noise essay

mike taylor seems to know a huge amount about techno, and while i find myself disagreeing with him sometimes he is frequently interesting

jess can be fairly curdiddly but is usually worth reading

amateurist hasn't been mentioned yet,i don't think, but he knows his shit

ronan has written some excellent stuff and is fairly funny

ned is the most polite person ever, and very knowledgeable as well...

tom is the voice of reason, and a very good writer

dave q can be hilarious

tim finney's writing has also lead to many a download

i'm sure i've forgotten people as well

robin (robin), Thursday, 27 March 2003 02:04 (twenty-three years ago)

as for this patriarchy carry on,its not like new posters aren't welcome,i'm sure noone would object to more female posters, but short of going on a female poster recruitment drive i don't see what can be done other than hope more women start posting here...

robin (robin), Thursday, 27 March 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

forgot to mention nabisco and gareth, both of whose posts are often excellent

robin (robin), Thursday, 27 March 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Alternately Jody all the regulars can order sex changes.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah yeah there is nothing barring women from this, especially not on the internet, this lovely free and anarchic postmodern world where everything is equal blah blah blah blah. i don't want to be part of the canon, i am uncomfortable with canons, i'm also uncomfortable with tokenism.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 27 March 2003 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, you are Highlander

There can be only one.

I am going to marry Anthony because of his devotion to the cause of Fred Durst's visage. I like practically throw up laughing over those pictures.

Also, I'd like to point out that Sean Carruthers is really cute.

I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO PROPS ANYONE FOR THEIR WRITING BECAUSE THAT SUXX AND IS GAY. We should be propping people for their wang or something, not their canon. Wait.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 27 March 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and I'd marry Chaki too.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 27 March 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I think you can only marry both chaki AND Sean if you live in Utah.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 27 March 2003 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I want more female presence on ILM! I never come here b/c you geeks frighten me/turn me off!

I want you all to recognize that a pedal steel makes any song perfect! I want you to understand the primal urgency that is Eminem! I want you to realize that Tatu are FAKE LESBIANS!! haha.

I am grrrl. hear me roar.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 27 March 2003 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

If it means anything to you, I agree, except for the word "perfect." Pedal steel does make any song better. Instant perfection is too much to hope for.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin "the voice of reason" is UK tabloid code for 'addled old reactionary' so you have me bang to rights.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Even Junior Senior won't get you out of this one Tom

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Its difficult to dislike the ILMers.
Even Callum is far smarter than he appears ;_)

kevin brady (groeuvre), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

remember kevin, there are two of them.
"Callum" is cool.
"calum robert" is a troll.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no he wuvd them. he hated house, disco and stupid retro shit

Why can't mainstream critics get over the fact that the new Sigur Ros album is called ( ) and has no song titles?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

ah, OK.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I'd like to point out that Sean Carruthers is really cute.
I'm not sure whether to feel flattered or worried about your sanity, Ally. But thanks!

Thank you Chaki and Nick!

I am keen to read anything about music by Mark S, Frank K, Tom E, Tim F and others, I like Ronan on the dance music he loves, and I'm keen on the people who will talk outside the usual rock/hip-hop ILM territory - for instance Tim H and Dr C on reggae are always tremendously enjoyable.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

when this was said:

to me, good writer is synonymous with "good thinker," and that IS what this board is for.
well thats all subjective, ain't it tho. and its excluding people who don't express themselves well with the written word. there are other forms of communication, you know. like MUSIC for instance. that thing you purport to love.

i was repsonding to a specific quote from Jody Beth Rosen. i think its funny that some of you tried to make out that iwas saying it about ILM. taking things out of context ahoy!

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 27 March 2003 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)
