They've been playing around town here (seattle) for quite a while, but I never had a chance to lay my hands on a CD release of theirs until now, and it was well worth the wait. Those of you who like Wire, Devo, the Gories, or the Fall, or some of the recent quirky no-wave-stalgia rock will enjoy their latest self-titled release on S-S/Dragnet

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i loved the three or four mp3s i picked up off audiogalaxy once upon a time but stupidly never got around to ordering anything.

all those OOP/RIP vinyls on the dragnet site are gonna make cry.

i think i'll order up the new lp, though. thanks for reminding me.

brian badword (badwords), Sunday, 27 April 2003 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
I just picked up "2", the new record. Oh my fucking god. Now, I LOVE that first record (which FINALLY just got released on CD recently). But "2" puts the first one so much to shame, it's disgusting. I think this is the first "neo-post-punk" record released that I'm jumping up and down about.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 16 May 2003 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm gonna buy it when i see them tonight! thanks db!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I think this is the first "neo-post-punk" record released that I'm jumping up and down about.

B-b-but you were jumping up and down about the Ex-Models record just last week! Can't fault your enthusiasm, will check this out...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Aha! You're right Nordic...

...

Yancey, I forgot A-Frames were touring the northern edge of the states.. cool!

(Now if only they would make money off the vinyl "2" soon enough to do a CD pressing of it... heh heh)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

vinyl only? i have a turntable, but if something's on vinyl i never listen to it... what should i get on cd?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

they might have their first album on CD for sale, since that is a "new" release of theirs, technically. It is GOOD, so don't let my rave about "2" turn you aside otherwise.

(psst, i will d*g*t*ze "2" for my own purposes soon enough, so Yanc3y keep in touch)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds good, db. thanx again.

off topic, but you hear about the new swami comp?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean the Swami Sound System Vol 1. thing? Yup. Don't have it yet though.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

A Frames are a goth band, but goth in that Midwestern nihilist sense a la Big Black. I dug their set a whole hell of a lot, and the "Hills Have Eyes" looking guitarist sufficiently creeped me out. Can't wait to see them again tomorrow at Mighty Robot with the Hold Steady. I put together the best shows.

mosurock (mosurock), Saturday, 17 May 2003 08:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I picked up both A Frames records last night (it ends up my friend produced both of them -- I had no idea), as their set was indeed great. So many bands going on: I heard PIL, Country Teasers, Ministry, Archers of Loaf, Shellac, Joy Division, etc., etc., in their sound. Thanks for the recommendation db!

Yeah, I was talking about the Swami record, db. I should be getting a copy from them this week. I'm excited.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Archers Of Loaf?!?

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolutely. Some of the vocals and melodies reminded me a lot of stuff from All the Nation's Airports.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i was just curious what you exactly heard, though I see now where you are coming from, though the Senator from Oregon respectfully disagrees. Besides, the important part is that the first album is ace -- and I need to get off my ass and track down the new one (cuz I dont think I can wait until it gets digitized by the band, and like you, I listen to CDs more, especially driving to work).

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Lars needs to hit harder though. He's got the Todd Trainer drop beat down, but he hits too soft. Still, he played very, very well.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

were the FM Knives good, y@ncey?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

absolutely. they wuz excellent. did matt tell you that we hung out?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope I haven't seen him today at all. Did you go somewhere after?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, we stayed there until 2:30 or so. We had fun though. He bought the Knives album. You should borrow it!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I told him Stretch Armstrong should be the mascot for Pinch. He was not amused.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh that's funny though. Stretchy = funny, always.

Okay he just came home and yelled downstairs. I hate that. I'm going to go take a walk.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
OK, so I saw the Metal Urbain/The Intelligence show last night... refer to the recent Metal Urbain thread for my review of their set there. (In brief: FUN! DO NOT MISS!)

On a worthy side note, the opening band The Intelligence opened and were also amazing in their new lineup. (Backing up a bit, The Intelligence is fronted by Lars Finberg, the drummer of the A-Frames, except he sings/nasally drones and plays guitar). They started off as a three piece (guitar-guitar-drums) a couple of years ago but now have recruited a couple of members of another great local rock band The Popular Shapes, and are now more of a force live (two guitars, more effects, bass, and drums). Their album Boredom and Terror sounds more like a 4-track bedroom excursion, which isn't to say it's not good, but makes for a POOR indicator of their live sound. They certainly have nailed down the loose Fall/Wire sound, or more that of a dancey slightly out-of-tune garage shuffle band whose songs always seem on the verge of falling apart but never do. They took a while to warm up, but a quarter way through, they were doing a great job of making the audience happy. Lars is the only guy I've seen live who can get away with vocalizing approximately close to Mark E. Smith without sounding or acting like a Mark E. wanna-be. (maybe because Lars doesn't add the "-uh" suffixes after every word). The darker garage overtones are the only thing this band has in common with the more goth/post-punk tighter sounding A-Frames, but A-Frames fans would certainly have an easy time getting into The Intelligence.

Anyway, The Intelligence are flying to NYC to play four shows in the area this weekend...(and also are playing a few other east coast dates, and Chicago as well, I can post the dates when I get em). Unfortunately, they are not playing with Metal Urbain for either of their two shows in NYC (who you should DEFINITELY see), but since you guys there have a chance to see both bands this weekend, I obviously recommend Metal Urbain, but also want to extend a plea for you guys to see the Intelligence if they're playing near your neighborhood too. You'll likely have fun seeing them as well.

Will (hopefully) post definitive The Intelligence tour dates as I get em.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'm going to all four intelligence shows, db. and agreed, i love that record. i've actually been told they're HORRIBLE live (this by a friend who just recently toured with them), tho there were bizarre circumstances surrounding that tour.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night's show was only their third(?) show in their new four-piece lineup, which is practically all new band members except for Lars. (I forgot to add that the drummer also sings into a cheap mic, too). So, I'm guessing (hopefully) those circumstances are LONG moot by now.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(also to some people, "horrible live" = "Not Dillinger Escape Plan tight". And The Intelligence are certainly a loose rock band live, but that's part of their charm, imho.)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

haha. my friend is in a very loose band himself and is old friends with the a frames crew. some inter-band squabbling (example no. 475 why bandmembers shouldn't date) led to the lackluster performances.

did you get that vinyl dragnet sampler with new a frames, intelligence, and country teasers tracks? tres good.

also, i might have some a frames goodies to send yr way. if i get them i'll drop you an email.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3, I don't have that stuff. then again, I've been bad about checking my local stores for newest dragnet/dirtnap related stuff. If i have problems getting it, I will be contacting your mafia.

I do HIGHLY recommend the Intelligence/Popular Shapes split 7" if you don't already have it. The Intelligence's songs on that outdo anything on the album (again imho). They sound slightly closer to their current live sound, minus all the vocal reverb and distortion.

Popular Shapes are also quite mention worthy. Best way I can describe their debut "Bikini Style" album is like if a current Dischord band went in an quirky proto early-XTC/Stranglers stylee.

All of this aside, things have been mysteriously quiet on the A-Frames side of things. (maybe the singer is just really busy at work or something..)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

a frames recorded the new record in october, but decided they wanted to redo it cuz it was "too punchy and warm." they're about to re-record it now, and erin wants it to be more disco. this from other inside sources. more exciting is the interest both the a frames and intelligence have drawn from a very hip label.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

and while i love them more than any other band at the moment (actually it's a four-way tie), erin really needs to start writing songs about THINGS and not just lists of words found in popular mechanics.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

But those are things too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking as a software engineer myself, and guessing erin has a similar job, engineering terms make GREAT song lyrics in the context of A-Frames music. The implicit nihilism of computer programming constructs just resonates with the music. That said, I'm sure the band will "pro gress" in the lyrics department eventually.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That said, I think the band has sung about "THINGS" but just more subtlely. "No bot" sounds like it's about social insularity, which is certainly a THING to sing about.. I could go on...

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i agree. it isn't that simple at all. nearly every piece i've written about them (especially the citypages one) talks about how they are songs about emotions filtered through technology, but i'd just really love to see them stretch out a bit.

erin's job = photo archivist.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

from Nicholas, the Intelligence/Popular Shapes guitarist (and my coworker here at the Weekly, in the art dept.), the Intelligence's East Coast tour dates:

4/2 - New York NY @ Boogaloo
4/3 - Brooklyn NY @ loft show
4/4 - New Haven CT @ BAR
4/5 - New York NY @ Sin-E
4/6 - Detroit MI @ Lager House
4/7 - Chicago IL @ Subterranean
4/8 - Baltimore MD @ Talking Head
4/9 - Philadelphia PA @ Spaceboy Records (early instore)
4/9 - Allentown PA @ Jeff The Pigeon
4/10 - Jersety City NJ @ WFMU (live on the air)
4/10 - New York NY @ Piano's

there you have it. they rock for sure--go see them!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 1 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

vinyl dragnet sampler with new a frames, intelligence, and country teasers tracks

what's the teasers contribution like?

my name is limitless, Thursday, 1 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
so the new album is great. a nuderection for sure. "eva braun" is the early fave.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I WANT THIS NOW!

ddb (ddb), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yancey is going to be selfish again. what is the album called?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

black forest. and yes i am teh selfish

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them play a near hour long set in early December, including lots of the new songs (and old ones like "Neutron Bomb" I believe), and yeah, I can't wait to buy Black Forest the day it comes out. I'm really happy for their Sub Pop deal.

donut christ (donut), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Min announced repressings of those early Dragnet singles as well. He said quote "haha, eBay suckaz"...or something like that

donut christ (donut), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

sub pop is putting this out?

YANCEY ALL THE MORE REASON TO SHARE IT.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i still think the first record is my fave. this one has some clunkers, but it's also a bit harder than the rest. one song sounds a lot like pil's "poptones"!!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
It's good, my friends. I give an ear unto it now. I like me the snarl/sass of "Galena."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Really digging "Experiment", which is available off the Sub Pop website.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
First thoughts on Black Forest: a lot weirder, dirgey, and dark and Residents-y than I expected... although the band are clearly not trying to be self-consciously weird or anything.. although "Flies" and "My Teacher" are certainly departures. There's no single track which really describes the entire album... hmmmm

it's not as "RAWK" as 2 or even A-Frames. But man does Black Forest grow on me more and more every listen. Possibly sleeper best album of 2005.....?

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

man the pitchfork review sucks! i don't think whoever wrote it really understands em, and i seriously seriously doubt he's ever heard em before. i think the new album is fucking tremendous, and i say so in the new seattle weekly. read it, fools!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Heheh. Mr. Strickler to the defense! I need to listen to it again here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't heard them but know of them and love the Whataburger-inspired (so I'd like to believe) name. I always wanted a band with that name.

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, Yanc3y, great piece!

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Weisensee", the instrumental from the "Crutches" single... is that a Neu! cover? (I have the "Complications" and "Neutron Bomb" singles, but no other singles)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

woah. i had totally forgotten the neu! song. it IS a cover of it, just really really noisily done. i KNEW that melody sounded familiar. the track is hard as fuck to find, so i'll upload it to the blog now.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

aight. download "weissenssee" and "eva braun" here if you like.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't been able to listen to this on headphones or decent speakers yet, so it's hard for me to comment on the sound of this album, but after couple of listens on my tinny computer speakers I really love the songs. Eva Braun and Death Train are early faves.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, Justified Ancients of Murphy, for "Weinsensee"! I could digitize the Neutron Bomb single as well. I do have a feeling that Min/Dragnet and S-S will hopefully put out a singles collection sometime in the near future anyway. I know Min has talked about repressing the Dragnet singles, so fans don't have to pay triple-digits for them on eBay.. not sure, if those have been done yet.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had the damn album on my hard drive since whenever, but I haven't cracked it open! I AM A NOBOT! *PLONNNNNNG*

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, what does "half-digested" even mean in that context? i don't get it.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth Sager and Simon Underwood, half digested vs. Erin Sullivan and Min Yee = half-eaten apples vs. oranges, I guess.

Don't you GET IT, Jams??

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitchfork has heads up ass again. That said, the new one aint as strong as the first two. Good, but not as great.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this one is a grower, certainly.. moreso than the previous two, which immediately hooked into me. I thought the same, jack, but I just replayed it immediately after and I liked it more then. Will listen throughout the week, and report back later.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Sam Ubl is the FUCKING WORST "WRITER" EVER.

I am not in love with the new a-frames, its a bit uneven...but I guess thats kinda their thing...I just hope they tour, they ARE SO RADICAL LIVE!!!

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, what ddb said-- uneven and not as cohesive as the first two -- also, im not sure i like the girl singing on some of the songs. jane and i have debated the merits of black forest, her a massive AFRAMES junky after me giving her her first fix and seeing them live opening for the teasers. maybe something is lost on new one in lack of robocold from first two.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

move to Seattle and you can see 'em all the time! (I'm at four for the year and counting, including once at SXSW)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i've only seen 'em once! it was so awesome. i so so so badly wanna see 'em again.

i think the lack of cohesiveness on the new one is good, actually! i'd rank the albums: a frames > black forest > 2

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's good to know that the one I heard, 2, is the worst one because it was kind of sloppy and dull.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

except it actually wasn't, thanks for playing

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Just picked it up today....man they really decided to kick of their new major-indie career with by far the least instantly likeable of their albums...Very dark and "industrial" (in feel not in the Wax Trax kinda way)....a bit more difficult, but overall I can see this being the proverbial "grower"....overall, I'm still fucking in love with this band.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 24 March 2005 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

since I'm going to be fucking working all night and listening to CDs at the office, I might as well come back and say that this is WAY better the second time through.

also:

im not sure i like the girl singing on some of the songs

I'm pretty sure there were some female backing vocals on the first (s/t) A Frames record, so it's not like it's out of character or anything.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 24 March 2005 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Love the girl singing (just like on the first record!) (like M@tt He1geson sez) (YOU'RE SO TYPICAL!), love the unevenness, love the flexing of the muscles, love the vocalist going off the "I will rhyme the first line / I will rhyme the second line" jag on occasion, love the murkiness, love love love love!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 March 2005 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"except it actually wasn't, thanks for playing"

Well, they might have tuned their guitars better (or had proper intonation jobs done on them) before recording the songs on that album, for one thing.

As far as the songs on it go, Computer Cougar did much the same thing musically and Satisfact did much the same thing lyrically/vocally years ago with at least a little more personality.

OK?THXBYE.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

you brought up satisfact before to compare them to the a frames, tim, and i TOTALLY don't hear it. i used to like satisfact a lot! maybe i completely misremember them (hello art of pretend... thread), but i can't think of any similarities other than, like, "songs," "guitars" and "words," ya know? tell me what songs i should try to see this. i don't have my satisfact records anymore, but i'll seek out those tracks.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

A Frames 2 is the only one I've heard, Yancey. I'm just talking about the vocals on that (as I say in post above, yo).

Matos, if you're going to be a homer, rep for Satisfact, dude! (First album, anyway.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

So, yeah, musically I'm saying it was just Computer Cougar again. A little more aggro, but not to the extent that it meant anything to me.

(AGAIN I'VE ONLY HEARD A FRAMES 2 AND THAT WAS ALL I WAS COMMENTING ON ABOVE! I WOULDN'T MIND HEARING THE NEW ALBUM AND WOULD HOPE THAT IT IS GOOD!)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they might have tuned their guitars better (or had proper intonation jobs done on them) before recording the songs on that album, for one thing.

That's like going back and asking Pussy Galore to not use all those bad words and not shout so much on their records. And oh yeah, use a REAL drum kit, Bob!

(Speaking of Pussy Galore, I think the A-Frames are a perfect example of my theory that the Galore were far greater influencers than they were a band themselves... i totally hear Bob Bert in Lars' drumming.. which is a good thing)

Matos, if you're going to be a homer, rep for Satisfact, dude! (First album, anyway.)

But they weren't even from Seattle.. they were, like, from BELLEVUE.. ROFFLE OMG!

Seriously though, Tim, aside from Matt Steinke's dark sounding vocals, there's nothing in common. Satisfact (at least on the self-titled bright orange sophomore album) were trying really hard to be Magazine, basically -- and they did a good enough job of it. There's none of that in the A-Frames at all.. not even in a subtle way. You'd have a MUCH better chance at your theory using Mocket's Fanfare as a comparison point.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine did make a comparison to Lake Of Dracula, which is probably the most cogent comparison I've heard... not meant to be an exact comparison, per se, but still..

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Discussion of this matter from NOSE BOARD ARCHIVES for your reading pleasure:

OK, then let's say that A-Frames 2 is kind of sloppy, not all that great, Computer Cougar did it five years earlier, dude on vocals sounds like Matthew Steinke of Satisfact (who did it seven years earlier), etc.

-- Tim Ellison (timejeanne...), September 15th, 2004.

SATISFACT were awesome. I didnt care for COMPUTER COUGAR.

-- ddb (stupidpum...), September 15th, 2004.

oh and A-Frames 2 is great...sloppy?

-- ddb (stupidpum...), September 15th, 2004.

apart from the drumming...it sounds pretty precise.

Their articulations are spazzoid with little regard for the sound of the instruments. The slide playing is sloppy. Also, they're sometimes out of tune.

-- Tim Ellison (timejeanne...), September 15th, 2004.

tim i think you want music actually made by robots instead of music by people who just wanna fuck them.

-- Yanc3y (ystrickle...), September 15th, 2004.

dude, being out of tune is totally noize.

-- Ian c=====8 (johni72...), September 15th, 2004.

Tim. I think you're wrong. The BASS is BOSS. Really. I also think the guitar sound is pretty thought out and with regards to tuning, I don't hear it. Really they both compliment each other. As for slides, FEW ROCKERS can really do this. ESP. in teh indie/punk world.
PLZ LISTEN to COUNTER EVOLUTION. FUTUREWORLD IS REALLY THE ONLY SONG THAT I CAN SEE AS BEING CONSIDERED SLOPPY, IT STARTS KIND OF FUNNY.

I AM A MUSIC PROFESSIONAL. I HAVE A MANSON AND A YAUCH.

-- ddb (stupidpum...), September 15th, 2004.

"being out of tune is totally noize"

Whether it's good or not, though, depends on how it's done. It doesn't add anything positive to the A-Frames' music.

ddb, just listening to the first few tracks here...The guitar on "Nuclear" is not out of tune??? "Counter Evolution" is pretty good, but I think the gtrist and bass playa overplay. The instruments sound crappy because they're spazzing out and hitting the strings too hard. You can get a big ballistic sound out of your amp and control your articulations more.

-- Tim Ellison (timejeanne...), September 15th, 2004.

listening to Nuclear now.

hmmmmm, i dunno...are you talking about the bass and guitar being out of tune with each other. or the actual instruments being out of tune.

the chords (guitar) he is playing are weird...that lead thing sounds a bit wierd too. but it never struck me as "being out of tune"

Tim, have you seen them live...way more aggro than the albums.

-- ddb (stupidpum...), September 15th, 2004.

OK TIM...Search and Rescue sounds out of tune.

OK NOW IM GONNA GO NUTS WITH THIS. THX DOOD!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Donut, again, I'm not saying that the band sounds like Satisfact, but listen to some of the vocals on A Frames 2 and tell me that's not totally Matthew Steinke.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I LIKE ME THE ROCK MUSIC WITH THE DARK BEATS THAT I LIKE.

There, elegant simplicity.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

you can compare Erin's vocals to Andrew Eldritch's! And I'm sure you'd be right in some song-to-song cases too. I'm not sure what your greater point is other than to up-up Satisfact... who were overlooked, but I thought Mocket were far more overlooked, and make a far more strong arguing point for you, given that this was also another of Matthew Steinke's bands where he sang, but was far more garagey and robotic..(at least on Fanfare)... so I'm just amused and baffled, really.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Heavens! "Sing West Seattle to me", Ned, for fuck and shame ;)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just that so many people I seemed to know or read were big on A Frames 2 and I bought the thing and thought that there was nothing new to it and that it was sloppy.

I never heard Mocket (always wanted to, actually).

And yeah, of course, I can enjoy things that are sloppy. But Pussy Galore and Lake of Dracula, I think, had a little more personality than what I heard on A Frames 2.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I'm the only one who hears how 2 is a pretty straight forward transition between A-Frames and Black Forest, although unique in its own way as well?

Tim, you can hate on 2 if you want. I think we're just arguing semantics at this point.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just happy somebody reminded of Lake of Dracula.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I listened to all three albums in a row yesterday...

I think A Frames, 2, and Black Forest follow into one of the two following analogies of bands' first three albums:

a) Wire's Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154
b) Godz's Contact High With The Godz, 2, and The Third Testament

I'm inclined to go with A here.

A Frames took a somewhat established sub genre of rock -- in this case, shifty garage rock, and put their own twisted spin on it. However, those into shake-your-ass garage rock could easily hop on and play along. Sort of the same thing with Wire's Pink Flag... No punkers can forget "12XU" and some other classics on the album, but most of them drop off after this record, because what followed just didn't suit "that sound".

2 comes in, refines, and darkens what they were paving with A-Frames. Erin sings in a much lower tone.. fare more eerie and goth, but there's still a lot of momentum and shaking going on. Same could be said about Chairs Missing with respect to Wire. Definitely punkish songs on it, but there's also some experimentation happening too.

Black Forest just dives into the black bog... there are some catchy tunes, but it's really overall about the moodiness and inherit nihilism here. Very moody, very strange album compared to the previous two, but certainly their most unique album to date.. There's nothing quite like it. It's also a grower. Hence, the A-Frame's 154...

(As for B.. I think I just used that because both A-Frames and Godz named their second album 2, haha)

I've definitely grown on Black Forest since the initial listenings. I think all three albums are excellent, but each for different reasons. Consistency in quality and diversity on an album-by-album basis.

I really hope this doesn't mean the band will release a shoddy uber difficult double live album next, then break up into accessible-to-REALLY-difficult solo/collaborative projects for seven years, and then reform again.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

good call, DD.

Black Forest was initially my least favorite, now I'm thinking it's my favorite.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

how does the intelligence fit in, dd? (i love that analogy, btw)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno! The Intelligence is He Said?

It's hardly a perfectly analogy, even within just the three records. I'm not even going to attempt to extend the analogy outside that.. haha.

I do look forward to the next Intelligence release. I hope it's a band effort, and not a solo 4-track Lars thing again. The live renditions are so much more momentous. (though I did pick up the vinyl issue of Boredom And Terror with the bonus 11 track CD of outtakes, most of which are eh, but are nice to have.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a great complementary piece to Yanc3y's piece in the SW, I think... as far as one's analysis of band's music / one's interview with the band itself, respectively.

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Incidentally, the show last night was crazy... they did about half of the new album, a track or two of the first two albums, then launched into older 7" tracks the second half! ("Neutron Bomb", "Crutches", "Complication"). This girl from Chicago I talked to flew to Seattle just to see this show.

God forbid they play material off their new album, which in touring, they are promoting.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 22 May 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I really hope that when they come out to NYC at the end of the year, they play more than just half of Black Forest.

Uh, this is ambiguous. When they played last time, did they play a set that was just half the songs from Black Forest? Or are you wishing that in their upcoming show, they will play a whole buncha Black Forest?

(Anyway, I just bought the new split Omnibus 7" by The Coachwhips/The Intelligence that weighs as much as a quadruple album. Are they making 7"'s out of osmium now?... anyway, BEST Intelligence yet! Fully fleshed out rock songs, as opposed to 4-track Lars. I'm really excited about future Intelligence stuff now.

The track listing...
A: The Coachwhips "Ringing The Cowbell", "Brains Out"
B: The Intelligence "Dating Cops", "I Have These Piles But After A While They Stop Working", "My State's Better")

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 23 May 2005 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man. who put that out, brian? i need to track that down.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on Omnibus records in Davis, CA... It's at the top of the news' section there. It's really the Intelligence vs. Karate Party on the B-side.. so that might explain why it's more fleshed out than the 4-track stuff... the most Pussy Galore they've sounded to date... (which for being signed to In The Red is no surprise really, but sure is a lot more fun now, IMHO.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to see the A Frames tonight at the Triple Rock!!!!

with the Spits (on the Ex. Heart's label Dirtnap who apparently sound a bit like Exploding Hearts) and Riverboat Gamblers (who share members I guess??? with Marked Men who I've heard a few songs of and really dig)

PEACe!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

The Spits are fun.. they sound like a Devo-ey Ramones on luuudes. They get really violent crowds in Seattle for some reason, but you should be fine. Hopefully, Tyco Party will do a one song set. and y'all know what I think of the A-Frames of course.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

have you heard Riverboat Gamblers? A friend's band (Falcon Crest) is playing at another club late and it's free so I might ditch on RBG...

sweet, now I'm excited for the Spits....

Mpls crowds don't do "violent"....rarely even "excited"...except maybe some crust or skin shows but that's not a scene i delve into.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Neither does Seattle, except for the Spits.. which is weird. Surely though, Seattle audiences would just sit there too if Lifter Puller would do a reunion show here, granted.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

I am so deeply jealous of you, Matt. Have a good time. It seems like it's taking forever for A Frames to get to NYC.

It's comforting to look at this thread and know that I'm not alone in loving Black Forest. I can't understand why so few people are interested in it...

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh to clarify something from up the thread - I mean that I'd like to see them perform most of or all of Black Forest because I love pretty much every song on that record. I don't listen to the earlier records as much, and can't find the singles.

Jack Cole totally mis-read me!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

prolly my fav record this year, or close to it.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I just found out that they are playing a late show at the Empty Bottle tomorrow night. I would LOVE to see this show, but I don't know anyone who'd want to go with me, and I'm sorta uncomfortable going alone because tomorrow evening will be my first time in Chicago ever and I really won't know my way around.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Seriously now, why could the Pitchfork people get them for their festival?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

why COULDN'T, that is.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

i think p-fork only gave it a 7, maybe they don't like a frames that much (although sometimes i read what i think are really positive reviews on fork and they only get sevens).....you should go! just get a cab to take you right there!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

yr right, perpetua, -- i did misread you. i cant believe i made that mistake. OF COURSE YOU LIKE THE THIRD ONE BEST AND WANTED TO HEAR MORE OF IT! DUH!

jack cole, soon to be replaced by an optical scanner (jackcole), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Hey M@tt, I might see you at the A-frames. My drunken and untrustworthy recollection is that the Riverboat Gamblers were pretty good...but the show was at V's where everything starts to sound like the best band ever around midnight after getting enough free drinks in me.

BTW, where is Falcon Crest playing later on?

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

john,

it's at the Hexagon with Off With Their Heads and one other band....the Hex=never a cover charge, so I might stop down if the Riverboats are doing it for me....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

The Black Forest review in Pitchfork was overall positive but seemed liked it was written on a bus in 10 minutes. Again: "Half-digested Pop Group"?

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Also Matthew, your statement way back then about "only playing half of Black Forest" was ambiguous -- and I asked you what you meant by that exactly, but you never answered me, but ah well.

Anyway, it could have been read as positive or negative, was my point, in the context of Black Forest and/or A-Frames live show set length. So I assume "you mis-read me!" was really meant to be typed as "you misunderstood my admittedly ambiguous praise!"

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I just lost track of this thread and didn't see it again til today. I just figured I'd clear up the comment. Better late than never.

You're right though - that was a really strange way for me to express that thought.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

this is still my favorite album of the year. i wish theyd get their asses over to new orleans. im considering going to check em out in austin in october, but im flying back from new york that same morning and im not sure if i'll be able to make it time-wise, much less endurance-wise.
but goddamn what a fantastic album by a great band.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

I put it on again about a month ago after not playing it for about three months, and it just smacked me across the room. SO powerful, and it gets better with age.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
It's been almost a year, and now i have to say Black Forest is the best of the three. Oddly enough I stand even firmer with my initially half-hearted "first three Wire albums" analogy than ever before. I still love all three pretty equally; i just have a new fave amongst the three. And songs I would be quick to pass over before are now my favorites off it i.e. "My Teacher", "Negative", "Black Forest III"...

The versioning of "Black Forest" (the song) along the album is great.. not unlike the "Nobot" ---> "3333333" move on the first album, except it's a noisier direction in the former case, as opposed to being more spacey and sparse in the latter.

In an interview I did with Erin, he said they record the basic instrumental tracks at their practice space, then do the vocals at his house with friends, who contribute and add stuff. Kinda like a party.

bendy (bendy), Friday, 28 July 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

One show at the Re-bar/Pho Bang, the band dressed in all white suits and had an army of all-white-dressed gogo dancer girls in front, except the gogo girls in white just stood there smoking cigarettes and did no singing looking at the audience indifferently.. and the fog machine was on full blast the entire show so no one could see the band play.

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Friday, 28 July 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Black Forest has certainly become my favorite album of theirs by a long shot. It took a while to grow on me, but damn that's a key key album. The first two are excellent without question. I guess I still stand by the first three Wire albums comparison.

both those bands need to tour the southeast.

anybody here hear that Dipers record "how to plan successful parties"? It's got erin and lars and dean whitmore from intelligence. a little noisier than aframes and just as rocking.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Friday, 28 July 2006 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

Curious to hear whatever comes next. The drums were so fucking crucial. Hard to imagine the band without Lars.

Black Forest grew on me, too. Thought it was too dirgey and cerebral at first, not as punitively physical as the best stuff off the first two, but it's grown on me. Galena, Experiment, Death Train, Black Forest II and Eva Braun are among their best songs. Side two does slack off a bit.

Is Pho Bang still a going concern?

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

Pho Bang occasionally has one-offs but the weekly event stopped a couple of years ago, which was unfortunately more of a blow to the comradery of some of Seattle's better bands here than even the regulars expected. :( (Not that there's acrimony at all.. just far more disconnection.)

okay this is the 3rdthread on which i've mentioned it, but for any/all interested, S-S recently released 333, a triple-LP collection* of A-FRAMES singles, demos and outtakes. listening for the 1st time, but i'd say that it easily holds up to their official LPs. various sounds and approaches applied to that one goddam kickass song, many of the most striking tracks recorded after their "final" LP, black forest. so spare, mechanical, catchy and cool. wire + feedtime + being an american with hands made of meat =

of unreleased stuff, S: kamelus, melt, dress in black (them cover!), over, visitor, shockwave, satellite, etc.

333 doesn't exactly taper off in the 2nd half, but does start to lean more heavily on singles & album track demos for its highlights. i.e., starts off w the shock of the new and slowly segues into a greatest hits set. will probably make a reader's digest version for my own use, cuz nearly two hours' worth gets overwhelming. still, better an embarrassment of riches than no riches at all. probably my favorite punk record since funerot and audacity.
