Goddamn what a mess. The year or my summary of it, either one. I'm unhappy with my halfarsed summary of Dizzee Rascal but hopefully I was able to make everything else comparatively explanatory and sufficient. If anything else, rest assured that I did my part to spread the "Paris Hilton = mantis" meme.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm so bored/exhausted with 2003...bring on 2004 already!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I never got the double meaning of Jay's Reagan line. Thanks!

sym (shmuel), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(p.s. nate make yr font bigger if you expect us old people to be able to read that whole thing.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I used Braille. I felt the pixels.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

jess, you can go to the preferences on yr browser toolbar to view -> text size and bigify it; besides, knowing blogspot's weak infrastructure I totally fear what would happen if I tried tinkering with the template

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought 2003 was a better year than 2002, or maybe I just heard more good music in 2003 than I did in 2002.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I'm so using one of your ideas for my P&J ballot comments. (You'll get credited, btw.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But Daddino, I submitted that piece as my Pazz & Jop comments!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the first part that was kind of like the jokes dennis miller made after the lights changed and he did sort of diluted social commentary to set up jokes about famous people being dumb. i liked your jokes pretty good.

cloverlandthug, Monday, 12 January 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"after the lights changed"?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"And as my colleague Nate Patrin points out, when the same song comes through every media in this 'viral' fashion a gazillion times over, why bother buying it? Hell, even downloading it seems massively besides the point." Then I make fun of Fitty.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, you make it sound like I have connections

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

you know ILx connects like Voltron

Al (sitcom), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, that is a terrific article. Bravo.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so using one of your ideas for my P&J ballot comments.

But the deadline for that already happened?

It is a spiffy article, yus. Even when I disagreed. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But the deadline for that already happened?

I've already voted; my comments are going to be sent in tomorrow and the powers that be are OK with that. I'm not very fond of what I've come up with so far.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

(this isn't just for natedetritus.)

-- Tuesday, January 13, 2004 -- posted by RandomILMGuy

Hey, thanks for reading. Sorry for my 2003 wrap-up taking so long. I've been very occupied as of late with various freelance work and finishing up some writing for the ___ Weekly and ________.

It was a wild year to say the least, am I right? If you weren't listening to a Deerhoof album you downloaded off of Soulseek, you were watching a Chinese-subtitled Finding Nemo (a children's film!), you downloaded off KaZaA.

Let's get to it, shall we:

Three rappers from the South released albums this year! Their music has lots of shouting and is called "crunk." David Banner's is a garden variety radical with shitty-sounding drums and slowed down albums that sound good to black people when they drink cough syrup to get high, Lil Jon is crazy and his music is about sex, and __________ are sort of the same as Lil Jon and David Banner but different.

Also, there were a bunch of other hip-hop and rap singers doing songs this year. _______, for instance, who brought his _______ meets ______ flow over ________ in a blender beats. His former partner in rhyme _________ switched it up with a few hot singles (including the _______-sampling smash "_________") that had the "game on lock." All in all, some hot songs were released by hip-hop singers this year, but can we tone it down on the violence and objectification of women. I mean, I'm all for free expression but do we need a girl shaking her god-given assets (pardon the pun) while some doo-ragged thug with a pistol leers at her in every video on BET.

50 Cent had several famous songs that I heard many times. Too bad he can't open his mouth, huh?

Compared to pop-thugs like 50 Cent and _________, Jay-z looks like ______. He dropped an uncompromising final album with his best "rhymes" yet and also acknowledged the brilliance of the criminally underrated Talib Kweli and Common. Maybe some other so-called rappers should take the hint and retire now! (I'm looking at you _________.)

"Dancehall reggae" or just "dancehall" was another big story in the 2k3. Dancehall singers Sean Paul, Elephantman and others taught us how to "wind that waist," "dutty yeah," and "bun di chi-chi man," and duet with Beyonce (phwoar!). I predict more big things in the future from the little island of Jamaica.

And now, to England, where rap music has been reinvented. Dizzee Rascal, who is much better than The Streets, raps about guns and girls and possibly drugs (but not cars!) (Note: In England gasoline is known as 'petrol.') Dizzee Rascal is reinventing music because his beats sound like _________. There are other rappers in the "UK garage" scene such as Wiley, the ______ of London, who, like Dizzee, proves again that England isn't all Britpop and "bangers and mash."

Indie rock again proves the law of diminishing returns and the less said about it the better. (But if you're still interested check out, _______, Deerhoof, ________, ________, ____________, ____, _______, ________, and _______.") (Note to Williamsburg hipsters: Lose the trucker hats and the Maiden shirts.)

And the big trend in music criticism this year was the blogosphere, renegade journalists that weren't afraid to let their freak flag fly. Heron Bone, K-Punk, Luka, Technicolor and myself didn't pull any punches in our weekly or even daily dispatches from the frontlines of the culture war. If you're interested in reading more, check the links on the sidebar of this page.

Well, that was my 2003, ya'll. Hope you enjoyed my wrap-up. If you have any questions/comments/arguments e-mail me. See ya.

cloverlandthug, Monday, 12 January 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Common isn't criminally underrated. Quite the opposite, in fact.

sym (shmuel), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

haha dk i totally pulled that shtick in my p&j comments, sorta!

indieland-fauxnaif is the voice of the new millenium.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't have the nerve to say "50 Cent in 2003: The man the whole nation wanted to rim." however.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if *you* don't...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't half the nation want to shoot 50 Cent? Isn't that part of his shtick?

cloverlandthug cold rocked this muthafucka.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, what the fuck?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

he also made me glad I'm a rockist.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

not that I wasn't glad already.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh, you only pretend to like rock ironically.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(Sorry.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't pretend to like rock ironically! I pretend to like it unironically!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

50 divided the nation into two camps this year...

sym (shmuel), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually it's highly possible that folks like Ja Rule wanted to shoot 50 Cent because he wanted to rim 50 Cent, so there might be some overlap.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"indieland faux-naif"? fuck's sake, Sterling! At least save your condescension for the inevitable "Nate's P&J ballot unsurprisingly follows the shitty lame-o critical consensus to a T" grousing.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

cloverlandthug: "isn't just for natedetritus"? How about it not being for me at all? We can't all be spizzazzz y'know

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, I think Sterl was referring to cloverland's post, not your blog entry.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it stunk at all. Five excellent albums were released this year, which was five more than 2002 and 2001 combined.

bahtology, Monday, 12 January 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

but then I thought cloverland's post referred to my blog entry (amongst others) and now I'm all angry and confused (but mostly confused) (and confusion brings anger) (rargh)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord knows what everyone would be talking about during the first half of the year if 50 Cent didn't exist.

I talked about t.A.T.u. a lot, actually.

Dude, Nate, don't post article responses if you can't take criticism.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

nate's a pretty good sport, for all the flak he takes.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

no I'm not

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is all this because Beck didn't release an album in 2003?

Carey (Carey), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like the one he released in 2002

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(it also has everything to do with stress and self-effacement and fah)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, this is the best thread ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

why?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I'm trying to make up for the fact that I was sort of an idiot when I first started posting here and horrified people with my neither hep nor populist musical tastes but it's sort of hard when all I'm seen as here is either "the one ILM guy who likes Beck" or "that undie rap fan who always yelled at trife for like no reason, wtf?"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

shut up, I like Good Charlotte.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Nate. You know we love you.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Carey totally refuses to post the lyrics to "Short Dick Man" on this thread. I'm really mad at her.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Nate, don't be so hard on yourself. you definitely deserve some kind of "most improved camper" award or something.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

this is why I don't drink, people

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, stand by your own frikkin' opinions. what's this whole "I'm trying to make up for the fact that I was sort of an idiot when I first started posting here and horrified people with my neither hep nor populist musical tastes" thing? If you think you're opinions were erroneous before fess up (I just exorcised my own personal Beck demon on my website) but don't kowtow. Kowtowing is wack.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not kowtowing if I actually do realize that it wasn't in my best interest to dislike certain things

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!

Carey (Carey), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't in your best interest? the only way that makes any sense to me is if you're saying you have to like certain things in order to get assignments or something. I really hope you mean something else.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

'Kowtowing is wack'. I like that. It is appealingly pseudo-onomatopoeic.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I mean hating things for immature/uninformed/ignorant reasons ("dude Jay-Z is bling and bling is bad")

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Kowtowing to bling is wack.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, if somebody genuinely doesn't like music that promotes extremely materialist values that's not necessarily bad.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, I think you do need to start drinking. Unless you have a history of alcoholism or liver problems or are allergic to wheat or have rage blackouts.

But yes, I recommend drinking.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rap critics that say he's "Money, Cash, Hoes"
I'm from the hood stupid, what type of facts are those?
If you grew up with holes in your zapatoes
You'd celebrate the minute you was havin dough"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, yeah, that's just what I need, something that makes me even more irascible and prone to miserable fits of loathing

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

In tribute to this thread, I'm listening to Talib Kweli.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(I really am)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

("Down For The Count", to be precise)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

so people from impoverished areas should be forgiven for (nay, EXPECTED TO) only singing about "money, cash, hoes"? Isn't that a little condescending. KRS-1 would not approve.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Eurgh, I feel like I'm providing the kleenex for argumentsturbation

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"article response" threads aren't just about praising your spooge, dude.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, your article was really good and nothing like the satire above. I think ep really means it when he says "this isn't just for natedetritus".

Dan I., Monday, 12 January 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/mail/archive/nov01/30.shtml

From: Nate Patrin
Subject: Jay-Z? What is this, the fuckin' Source?

Ferchrissakes, It's bad enough reading your reviewers' condescending begrudging praise of Blackalicious ("so unfunky that I can easily listen to it while knitting") and Handsome Boy Modeling School ("it seems like if anyone in "underground" hip-hop gave a shit, this might sound half as good as anything Cash Money's releasing"), but I found it impossible to stomach Ethan P (Diddy?)'s gushing praise of the latest Jay-Z turd. This guy chooses to cling to the jock of Mr. Jigga My Nigga- wow, he IS a lyrical genius with an inventive rhyme like that!- like a public bus' handstrap and hang on for dear life while burbling bullshit about him being "hip-hop's last great personality" (what, did KRS-One retire to pursue a career in IDM? Did Del die without anyone telling me? Does Kool Keith not actually exist?), as well as foisting the Suburban Whiteboy Myth that Biggie was a truly great MC (psst, ever hear of Rakim?). Jay-Z gets enough fellatio from the mainstream media, while a site such as yours is better served to inform people of great records they, you know, aren't constantly bombarded with in every single mainstream publication out there. Jay-Z's music is not art. It is a product.
-Nate Patrin

WELL SINCE YOU MENTIONED IT...., Monday, 12 January 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I said, I was stupid.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean, I was actually disappointed with Pitchfork for giving ups to something that wasn't indie rock. I also used to hate Daft Punk, for christ's sake.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread makes my head hurt.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mind criticism when it amounts to something more substantial than "Nate used to be a stupid indie rocker, har har"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Very good article

Jim Janse, Monday, 12 January 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

What is it with almost every thread I start -- Kish Kash vs. Speakerboxxx/TLB; I Hate This Generation; this one; my own fucking happy birthday thread -- turning into a morass of retardation?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

whoever smelt it...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

2003 was just fine for me. Some music came out I liked, some I didnt, listened to old stuff, listened to new stuff. You know, same as every year.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

At the current workrate my 2003 wrap-up will finish in June sometime.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I can't take criticism and I can't articulately defend my tastes and blah blah whatever

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

dk's "i hate you so much i want to suck yr cock" response to indie rock never ceases to amaze me

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it's like the guy who makes fag jokes seemingly at random in a "hey, i'm okay!" kind of way

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(especially considering he's, you know, a white canadian kid with a bizarre swisha house fetish)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I like your Dizzee paragraph Nate, it was succinct and it summed up the things about his voice that most stand out to me, and that most other writers don't really seem to get across.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

but it's sort of hard when all I'm seen as here is

This is where you always go wrong, Nate. You actually care how ILM "sees" you. It makes you an incredibly easy target. The idea that you have to defend yourself for whatever tastes you had, or for them changing, is baffling.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't know you when you were an idiot Nate. i wouldn't have guessed either. if i was on ilx two years ago i woulda been an idiot too. maybe in another year i'll cringe at my current idiocy.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone OTM. Don't worry too much about your taste changing Nate, my tastes now are completely different from what they were 5 years ago and there is evidence all over the interweb to prove it; it's not really important.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, can you believe at one time tom listed a pavement album in his best of the 90s??

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

p.s. doubling bacck over yourself, changing your mind, etc. - especially in "public" - is what makes you a human, not a fossil or a hermit.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

not a fossil or a hermit.

Hey I resent...oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Well said, Fiddo!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but Tom was right to have done that!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

best or poss. worst gag from my P&J:

"Multicult prediction 2004: Crunk meets Africa = Diamonds on the Soles of Shoes! 2005: '93 revival and new shoes for Souls of Mischief. 2006: Sandal scandal misfire when Common sells out, soul."

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice one Nate (did that sound British? sorry!). One of the worst, most stunting things about the internet is that once you stake yourself to a particular stance on something by means of instantly published comments however tiny, its hard to adjust your views because of the past "evidence". I'll be honest, your old stuff (and the CONFIDENCE! you had in writing it) made me want to shit on you but the fact you acknowledge it and are better for it is praiseworthy.

You're just like me, in a way. I've have this screenname for so many years people just call me "Coq" which is bad when I'm trying to act like I have a mature reputation. It's not like I can get rid of it, like it seems you can't get rid of the "Detritus". I fucking HATE that word more than "flotsam" and "jetsam."

The Thinking Man's Paris Hilton (DarrenK), Monday, 12 January 2004 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

But thanks for reminding me to change my handle.

The Thinking Mantis (DarrenK), Monday, 12 January 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Sorry for flipping out last nite, everybody. Anyhow:

The whole "It Kinda Stunk" motif doesn't come from individual albums or songs (which were on the whole somewhat better than '02, though slightly not-as-good as '01) but from the general trends and atmosphere around music -- the whole "it's not enough to make a great pop record" atmosphere. (I wonder how bad Britney would be tanking right now if it weren't for The Kiss(tm) and that Vegas wedding debacle.) I just found a couple albums disappointing given the expectations I had (Missy, Outkast, Massive Attack) -- albeit nothing as frustrating as Sea Change, and plenty of albums I hoped would be great were (Jaxx, Rapture, Stripes, Strokes). I also don't like the whole [whatever] Idol routine -- I haven't watched enough to feel qualified to make a solid judgement of it and it should be harmless enough in theory but while I've been able to tolerate the "assembled and groomed by managerial genius" pop-star creation procedure (see: The Monkees, The Fall), "chosen by televsion" is an idea I have significantly less faith in.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

my verdict - it's too long for me to read at work! have cut and pasted and printed it, so i'll be giving it a read on the bus on the way home

I finally and far too late finished my 'comments' on my P&J Ballot - I won't post it here but ppl can email my other address if they're interested and it will probably show up on FT when we sort things out there.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i could've done some. i've had almost zero time for any non-day job writing in at least three months. totally sucks.

i've made it through about half of yr piece nate, and my only comment thusfar -> explaining why you like or dislike something doesn't need to be defensive, nor should it.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I am finally done.
