100) "This is what KLF is about...also known as the justified ancients of mu mu...furthermore known as the Jams!" - 1'55 to 2'10, The KLF, "Last Train To Transcentral" single version

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds a bit familiar...

99)1:39 into People We Want off At The Club by Kenickie
The song, like a lot of the album, is about moving from kids playing as grownups to growing up. Lauren sings "If we go home, what happens now? If we stay out, could we be?" and the drums that have been driving the song cut out, and the other girls join in on "the people we want". Then the guitar comes in, like the dreams of everyone who has ever heard the word "city".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I searched for uplifting, there may be a top moments thread but I want MASSIVELY JOYFUL ONES!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

98) "Girl from mars" where the boy dreams of the girl standing over him and when he wakes, no one there but he still loves the girl from

MARS!!!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

number 100 should be number 1!

97. Human League 'Don't You Want Me'

the bridge builds and rises, Phil's threats are getting sterner - "you'd better change your mind or we will both be sorry" is hardly a euphoric sentiment, where are we going? the chorus lyric seems so tragic and helpless but the music is so feelgood and resigned (content?) - an emotional juxtapose that results in big smiles all round

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it not just a subset of Moments in Love?

98) "But she didn't understand, she just smiled and held my hand" 1.41-1.48 into Common People

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

96, sorry

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

95) Neil Diamond's career.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the first 1,5 seconds of the beatles' 'i'm only sleeping'.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

94. Stardust 'Music Sounds Better With You'

LOVE MIGHT..BRING US BACK TOGETHER, I FEEL SO GOOD

naive delusion amidst the haze of the purest sunshine disco - cherish the moment, whether she comes back or not

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

that will be no. 94

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

93. Pet Shop Boys (WHO WILL OWN THIS THREAD INCIDENTALLY) 'Always On My Mind'

you are always on my mind! no, REALLY, YOU are ALWAYS on my mind - i can't stress that enough so here's the most astonishing orchestral shift just shoehorned in for the briefest of moments at the end of one of the most succinct choruses in pop history (it's barely there yet it's the axis of the entire track)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Andrew that Common People part sounds like the curtain of the universe tears open so God can hand you your dancing legs.

92. Mine is 2:10 into Kylie's "Love At First Sight" with the Hooo-oooh-oooh-oooh. "I look perfect but here's some glitter." Obvious I know, but it's like driving a spotless rental sports car and for a few seconds having the wind match the car's velocity precisely, leaving your hair perfectly untousled. What?

Le Coq (DarrenK), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

re Stardust and naive delusion

should be naive delusion/affirming hope - more just the latter really

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I would argue that the real punctum of PSBs' "Always On My Mind" (and we are, are we not, talking about the top 100 puncta in pop?) is in the fadeout, as Tennant whispers/confesses: "Maybe I didn't love you."

Phoebe Dinsmore, Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

91) The intro to Love for life. (overused by now I know)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

91) The intro to Lust for life. (overused by now I know)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What bit are you actually talking about Stevem? The orchestral comeback in "Always In My House" is a knock-you-flat moment of course.

I'm not sure we are Phoebe, often the moments are a bit less subtle than that and can't puncta be spine-chilling or terribly sad or very moving in ways that aren't just uplifting (eg Being Boring)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Does it have to be "hands-in-the-air", or just stuff that brings a enormous smile to your face?

90)6.35 into Rez: the series of long swooshes has faded, and it's just the drums for half a minute, then the swirly twirly main bit wanders back into the room and notices the party's still going on

or

89)8.00 into Rez: and now it's dancing on the speakers.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Dr C. to thread.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

88.BA BA BA
BA BA BA
BA BA BA BA
BA na na na na na na na
na na na na na na na
na na na na na na na
na na na

BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM

surely you've got it from that?
no?

its the intro to 'since yesterday' by strawberry switchblade. to quote carl douglas 'just one hit, but WHAT a hit...'

its the off-key organ, the drum-machine and the best moment: that split-second where it hangs, just after the drums are finished and they burst into song.

i wonder what they're doing now?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom I mean the bit under the second "you are always on my mind" - i experienced this rush most recently at the last Club FT ;)

88. Sophie Ellis-Bextor 'Murder On The Dancefloor'

another bridge. by this point Sophie is brimming with confidence, enough to warn us that there is no getting away and she'll take you all the way. adorable cheek rather than actually threatening/off-puttingly arrogant in any way. lead on foxy!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

make strawberry switchblade 87, then

or 86, probably, by the time i've written this.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

86) A-Ha, "Take On Me", debut single from some unknown Euroband, yes very pretty but what can they actually do, drum machines warming up for a few seconds, some tentative bass licks, then at 0'17 oh whats this its only ONE OF THE BEST POP RIFFS EVER! So bouncy and alive and naive just like the song/image.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

er that was 85, so 85 now

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

86. Talking Heads' Once In A Lifetime

MY GOD!! WHAT HAVE I DONE?!

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

83. Underworld 'Born Slippy (Nuxx)'

i've got a pint!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem ism OTM TWICEM.

90) Roxy Music 'Virginia Plain' All of it! Or just maybe the bit where it comes out of the crazy breakdown at the end.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

81. Madonna 'Cherish'

The breakdown. The trumpets. The promises you're convinced will be kept (even tho this is bloody HER!). Solar radio overload. Do not, on any account, underestimate her point of view.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lust For Life" thing seconded, and illustrated (as requested) by the following story:

1998, Haigh Hall, The Verve's triumphant homecoming outdoor show in a natural amphitheatre in the north west. I'm working backstage for reasons unimportant, so I've been at the venue since well before the doors open. I happen to be in the photographer's pit when I hear the message come through a nearby security guard's radio that the paying hordes are about to be admitted.

Bang on cue, the DJ cranks up the PA and lets go with...well, you know what, and at that precise moment, with perfect symmetry, approximately 10,000 people stream like a fuckin' avalanche down the hill towards the stage and indeed me. The sun shines, the smiles are a million miles wide and yes it was a bloody Verve gig but at that moment it really didn't matter a bit cos it was PERFECT. Fuck Trainspotting, this was The Moment.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

91. Cat Stevens - Matthew and Son. Two minutes and twenty four seconds in, the song should be finishing. Cat trails off...

"...they've been working all day, all day, all day..."

Horns and strings collapse. Bass cuts out. Lone piano sings the melody, you're humming the words 'Matthew and Son' in your head. Cat, so low in the mix you're not sure if its real, does the same.

Absent-minded.

Then.

BUKKA, BUKKA.

The drums sound like some librarian dropping the dusty tomes in which the whole of history is recounted.

One volume for before the drums kick in, one for after.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck, mine's 84 then.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

79) "Lights from the airfield shining upon you" 1.16-1.19 Not Gonna Get Us by t.A.T.u

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry x-post. Mine wanted to 91, but isn't allowed.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

78. The synth/guitar glissando into the title track of Brian Eno's "Here Come The Warm Jets"

77. Robert Wyatt's version of "I'm A Believer"

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

76) trombones led the big parade...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

???

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Which bit of "I'm A Believer"? My vote is for the extra four bars of harmony inserted between the verse and chorus as if the Mahavishnu Orchestra had suddenly gatecrashed the session. Throughout, also, the tension and stimulation built up by Dave MacRae's staccato piano just a quarter of a beat behind Nick Mason's drums. Also, outside the actual record itself, the bitter irony of Wyatt's grim face intoning the words direct to camera in his wheelchair on TOTP.

Phoebe Dinsmore, Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

75. The Beatles 'All You Need Is Love'

when the 'She Loves You' chorus-line comes in at the climax

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

74. Gerling 'Dust Me Selecta'

Chorus. Whoosh (with the gapping sounding like skidding brakes - so fast has this love come back to you).

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Phoebe -- the whole experience of the song, especially as a testament to Wyatt's indomitable spirit and warm heart, does it for me. I agree that the descending four-bar bridge is a very nice touch, as is the bit somewhere in the song where you can hear him flub the piano part, left in, as he put it in one of his liner notes, "as evidence of my almost painful sincerity".

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

73. DJ Crystl, "Warpdrive" - I can't remember the exact minute but the join between the two parts of the song - the fast metallic high-speed tunnel chase breaks of the first half and then suddenly this bursting through into a vastness of beautiful synthesised space.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

72) St Etienne's "He's on The Phone", after the interlude and the bit of French, "yes".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

71. My Boyfriend's Back by The Angels is full of great moments from the spoken intro to the "hey la hey la" backups but the doubletime multi-girl chant of "Hey, he knows I wasn't cheatin' / Now you're gonna get a beatin'" is tops. don't know the exact time, it's after the 2nd chorus I think, about 2/3 of the way through the whole song.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

70. Orbital - "Adnan's"

After several minutes of buildup around the initial theme and an ominous bridge, the music pauses and that glorious descending synth bursts in like the sun cresting an ominous cloudbank.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought this was POP though? (cue usual argument about whether to use more specific definition of word based on some dubious criteria)...

70. The Marvelettes 'Heatwave'

Just from the word "Whenever"

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i was going to say Orbital's 'Funny Break' actually

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(re: "my boyfriend's back" - OK, the lyrics aren't "uplifting" per se but the voices are deliriously happy and just)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

OH YEAH STEVEM, that's a great one, too! As is "Halcyon"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(decides not to post 0.20-10.15 of Heaven by Alan Moore and Tim Perkins)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbital "Way Out" the very first thing you hear?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Alang also otm tho it's 'Way Out's 'chorus' type thing (wailing female) that does it best for me

67. Gloria Gaynor/The Communards 'Never Can Say Goodbye'

usual suspects: disco, strings, heartbreak, resolve

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i know it's prog and sad but actually fuck abt 4 minutes before the end of 'out there somewhere' by orbital (or the last track of in sides), that is great. and on the first track when the synths go spiralling up indescribably.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ENRIQUE OTM THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST HARROWINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND EMPOWERING MOMENTS IN MODERN MUSIC

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

66. Kelis - Rollerink. It happens right at the beginning of the track, before the song has even started, this little bubbling bleep noise that gets higher and higher, tickling your ear and leaving you primed for the pop genius that follows.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha, regarding 'Out There Somewhere', me NOT to thread

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan and Enrique, are you talking about the bit at the end of part one when it all falls out of key and then resolves just as part two kicks off?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

65) 2.30-2.34 Smells like Teen Booty. "let's cut a rug while we scat some jazz", and the drums cut out as the backing track resets to what's still one of the ten best intros ever.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

64. The bit in New Order's Run 2 where the synth comes back in after the breakdown near the end. I've mentioned this before (I think the Ragget thing is with me on this one)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

63. Orbital (argh! again!) 'Impact USA - The Earth Is Burning'

Euphoric DEscension shockah - that isolated hook on it's own but rivalling close is the "Cryyy for survival" bit about 6 minutes later when it all goes just a little bit mental

NB: Only REALLY works if you've heard it live at a festival

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

71. Girls Aloud, "Girls Allowed": the climax of the middle eight which is devoted to how they never ever give up (yeah!) and are gonna get it all (never give up, never give up: at 2:08 all five of them come in and squeeze "If I want it gonna get it, gonna take it, gonna make it this way" into three amazing seconds, "wa-a-a-ay" stretched out like a siren call. Steel-eyed ambition, but most of all confidence that you ARE that good.

72. Kate Bush, "Hounds Of Love": 0:39 in, the first "here I go!". The vocals go up into another plane of existence, the staccato strings start up and everything comes together.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus i was seriously thinking about mentioning Kim Wilde's 'You Came' then

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

62. Aphex Twin - Girl Boy Song - 3:29. Seems absurd to be putting this into a pop thread, but the bit when the beats all disappear, and you're left with nothing but the pizzicato strings and this ascending glockspiel melody that only occurs twice before the moment is shattered forever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

My Hounds of Love moment is the start of the second verse "I found a fox!" - its like Stevem was saying about Bextor, how you get this massive confidence coming through in the second verses of songs sometimes and it carries you through. Also the intro sample of course.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

when this chart is done we should def re-post the whole list WITH exact specific time for ALL tracks mentioned

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i was surprised you mentioned DJ Crystl Tom as i thought you wanted to keep this to Pop in the...poppist sense. and i've not even heard 'Warp Drive' but want to now badly!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I didnt really intend to keep it to a poppist pop sense, but anyway Warpdrive is really pop!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

71 (actually 62) reminded me:

59) En Vogue, My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) "And now, the breakdown"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

58. Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer. Songs that lurch up a key in the final chorus are always ridiculous in that kind of forced adrenaline sugar rush way - quite often they sound ludicrous, but when the rest of the song is its sheer ridiculousness it somehow sounds like the best thing ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

... when the great thing about the rest of the song is its sheer ridiculousness...

Is what I meant to say.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Saint Etienne and En Vogue moments seconded. Tom, I was torn between those two "Hounds Of Love" moments, together with "I need la-la-la-la-love!", of course.

The numbers are so fucked, so

71) Bjork, "Pagan Poetry": when all the instrumentation drops out and her voice, naked and bare, declares her undying love for her boy to EVERYONE around. "I laaaff heem, I laa-haaff heem!" Unfairly dismissed as wittering by insane people. The backing choir of little Bjorks make it even better with "she loves him, she loves him!"

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

58 Oasis "Slide Away"

At the end, all this miasma going on, hellish guitar noise, and Noel says the only true thing he ever said - "don't know / don't care / all I know is that you take me there..."

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

57. Guns'n'Roses - November Rain (about a minute before the end). Is that it? Marvellous, very good lads, applause all round... hang on, what's this doom-laden noise - oh my god it's guitar solo number three! Just when you thought it couldn't get any bigger.

Lex I kill you with pointed sticks that bit ruins Vespertine!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

56. The Sweet - Fox On The Run - the intro. yikes.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

55 Deee-Lite "Groove Is In The Heart"

At the start, some weird noise, a click, and FUCK ME YES THE BASSLINE YES YES YES IT IS DEEE-LITE!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

54. Kelis - "Flashback"

"You make me come... *chuckle* oh yeah, ALIVE."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

53) 0.00 - 0.10(say) into Andrew W.K. Party Hard Robot says party, party starts.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

52) The synth solo in tATu's "All The Things She Said"

51) Fiona Apple, "The Way Things Are" - the first time she sings the line "and I'll keep kickin' the crap til it's gone". It sounds like closure.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't someone who actually likes it going to say something about aerodynamique?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

50. The Pet Shop Boys - "A Red Letter Day (Motiv8 12")

The PSB never really worked out how to reconcile handbag with Neil's voice until this - you've already had the huge clubby and very un-PSB synth riff at around 2 mins in but the remix genius is to then leave the song intact, playing off its gentle reserved sweetness against the entirely unreserved euphoria of the backing. It all comes together at 5'07, in the middle eight, when he finally comes out with it - "Like Christmas morning, when you're a kid / Admit you loved me and you always did / Baby I'm waiting for that red letter day...today." And then breakdown, requital, etc.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

52.) Big Star, "Stroke it Noel": about 30 seconds in, after kinda sorta melancholy intro--snare..."Do you wanna dance"...descending string figure..."Do ya..."...strings swell

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The multiple tags of "Song 2" - the drums, the guitar, "I got my head shaved...", "WOOOOOHOOOO!"

and 86, great call!

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, make mine 49 (i type slow)

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

50) Archigram - Carnival. You're in a huge room, full of sweating, dancing bodies, the beat and the bassline drop out suddenly, a fraction of silence, then that two-note trumpet comes in out of nowhere. The the beat comes back in again and watch everything go BANG!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

46. The pre-chorus to Expose's "Let Me Be The One". Mad genius.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

47) "La Di Da Di": the sung part at 3:30--"Why don't you give me a play..."

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

45. Walker Brothers - My ship is coming in. Two great moments, 0'30 when the chorus comes in for the first time and 2'38 when he belts out baby, baby in a higher key and you know that this relationship is going to work out for them.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

44. Freelance Hellraiser 'A Stroke Of Genieus'

not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but for me the highlight is the chorus in effect with the Strokes' yammering chords, rendering Xtina's voice much more URGENT and optimistic than in the original.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

43. Love - You Set The Scene. At the end of the bridge, what you've had so far is a cool psychedelic orchestral folk song, then suddenly Arthur Lee sings "I wanna love you, but oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh" and it seems like a turn from another song altogher, like a little bit of Motown sneaking in before it melts away into the orchestral fanfare. Or alternatively the whole last couple of minutes - "this is a time! This is a time! Time, time time time!"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

42. Associates - Party fears two

Especially 0'00 to 0'16, The intro tantalising us with the joys yet to come and 1'31 when Billy cuts loose for the first time , Awake me.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

41/ The end of the bridge
("Look straight ahead, Nothing but blue skies")
into the last verse of
"I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

God fucking damnit, that's my song.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

:)

40. Denim - "It Fell Off The Back Of A Lorry", 2'25

You've already had the children's chour, now suddenly you get i) a key change, ii) vocoding iii) multitracked Lawrences going "off a lorry lorry" ALL AT ONCE.

(I have just realised that The Darkness = Denim actually)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

39. Daft Punk - One More Time. Huge synthetic fanfare, builds up for JUST the right amount of time, then you hear the very first "One more time". It doesn't get much better.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

38. Ike & Tina Turner 'River Deep Mountain High'

Because I am getting bloody goosebumps just typing those words out! It's an extraordinary record that probably defines the Spector Sound as much as anything else. The stirring chorus - all thundering brass and towering strings - feels so powerful but contained, like a ravenous lion being held back by 30 people. Almost frustrating to wonder just how far it could go without losing that magical aspect, but just a privilege enough to marvel at it's majestic beauty.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't get much better.

But it does go on for another 3 minutes :(

(six in the Pete Baran mix)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

37. Spice Girls, "Wannabe": 0.01, the first "yooooo-": loud, brash, confident, heralding a new era of pop and, best of all in retrospect, the first nail to be hammered into the coffin of Britpop.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

36. Michael Jackson - Thriller. At the end of the intro, when those big bombastic synth chords play the chorus for the first time.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

35. Ultravox 'Vienna'

THE FEELING HAS GONE ONLY YOU AND I IT MEANS NOTHING TO MEEEEE
THIS MEANS NOTHING TO MEEEE
OHHHHHHHHH...VIENETTA

(4/4 strings and piano build up also k-classic)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not joy, but it tastes like joy:

34) 0:51-0:57 Placebo, This Picture "You know we miss her, we miss her picture". Your head goes back, your eyes fill up with black, your heart explodes.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

33. Beyonce ft Jay-Z 'Crazy In Love'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

32 Sun Always Shines on TV again right at the start at the end of the chord build up, and then crash! marvellous

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

31. The Banana Splits, "Tra-La-La" (A couple versions exist. I choose the tightest, fastest and briefest one.) -- the final return of the chorus after the bridge. (The funny thing is that I HATED the show when I was a kid, and it still seems like crap to me now.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

best thread ever, and there's still 30 to go

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You can dance. For inspiration. Come on. I'm waiting.

Approx 30 seconds into "Squance" by Plaid, when the beat finds a new layer and goes from dum-dum dumdum dunm-dum dumdum to dum-dum dumdum duggaduggaDUM and then a but later those weird things that remidn me of trumpets as heard by aliens come in and OH MY!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

25. Talk Talk 'It's My Life'

perhaps i am too influenced here by when Jacques Lu Cont played this as his chosen single track at recent club night but the chorus remains defiant and euphoric

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

25. The Rapture - House Of Jealous Lovers

The bit after the breakdown when the cowbell comes back.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

22. Sylvester 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)'

Rousing hree chord chorus uncannily similar to 'West End Girls' - disco genius

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

21. Guns N Roses - Novemeber Rain - the guitar solo obviously.

13. 14:42-15:01 of the Avalanches' 2001 Ibiza show on Radio 1. -- The lead Jackson Sister, having sung "Why Do Fools Fall I LOve" for about a minute, suddenly gets swept up in a wave of Avalanche kitsch orchestration. Music, even and especially mainstream music, can in its most convulsively joyful moments sound like it includes not just joy but it's deepest opposite (sorrow) and everything else, too (anger, lust etc.) This nineteen second moment contains more in it than most movies or books.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew, my New Pornographers choice would have to be the outro to "execution day", but yours is definitely one of their best moments.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Facists. You won't allow posts that add their own meaning of uplifted simply because it disagrees with yours. My posts were truely about uplifting pop moments, but yours all sucked. Mine will be referenced and remembered for years to come.

"71. My Boyfriend's Back by The Angels is full of great moments from the spoken intro to the "hey la hey la" backups but the doubletime multi-girl chant of "Hey, he knows I wasn't cheatin' / Now you're gonna get a beatin'" is tops. don't know the exact time, it's after the 2nd chorus I think, about 2/3 of the way through the whole song."

Yeah, but the part that never fails to raise a smile is when she sings "'Cause he's kinda big and he's awful strong" and just puts the tiniest bit of a purr on the word "big."

Rick Massimo, Thursday, 15 January 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Unwanted intrusion aside, this was genius. :-) Someone should make the mp3 disc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be awesome just to hear the 5-second pinnacle of each song spliced back-to-back into one monster uplifting bonanza. It should be just a bit over 8 minutes for all 100.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorta like an Osymyso of joy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, it would be kind of an experiment. What would happen to you if you listened to it straight through? Would your ear-drums implode in a frenzy of ecstatic joy, or would you just kind of scratch your head and say "What the hell was that?"

o. nate (onate), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Some REALLY uplifting moments:

1.- The intro to "Everyday is like Sunday" by Morrissey. The base and drums build-up is sublime.

2.- The bridge section of the "Always on my mind/in my house" mix by the Pet Shop Boys.

3.- The moment the second part of "How we used to live" by St. Etienne starts to kick in. Its pure joy!

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 16 January 2004 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I with Tico Tico on Warpdrive -- it ever a track was composed to depict a futuristic chase through a decaying urban sprawl, that was the one. Wasn't it John Peel's fave of 1994? Amazing moment alright when the pursued emerges momentarily into some feeting paradise only for the pursuer to be back again on his heels.

Other moments include the intro to "Decomposing Trees" by Gaxaxie 500, Iggy's screams at the end of "Down In The Streets" on Funhouse, the end bit of "Messin With THe Kid" on The Saint's debut LP, the intro to "Not Too Late" on the Glider EP.

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Friday, 16 January 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Late for the party, but I gotta add the "have a good trip" sample and ensuing chorus during the intro of the Avalanches' "Since I Left You"

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i would be totally up for making the Osymyso-esque splice thing featuring all these fantastic moments. i'm not convinced it would come out as good as it sounds tho.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

No, icing needs cake.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Was gonna say the drum intro to Everlasting Love (Love Affair version, natch), but I just heard it on the radio, so it's actually the whole song.
Lots of wonderful joyous moments here tho'. Ace stuff.
