"Bands Reunited" on VH1

Anyone else watch this? I just saw the Romeo Void one. I was quite touched by the poor sax player not being able to play anymore (thanks to the Demon Tinnitus). The Berlin one wasn't quite as good, but I still quite enjoy the concept of the show. Too bad there isn't more drama, though. The ads make it look like there's a lot more acrimony, but mostly the participants are all pretty amenable.

Yer thoughts?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the show was typical VH1 crap.. Yet I watched it because it was Romeo Void. I never consciously made the connection between "Never say Never" and Bush Tetras. ("Too Many Creeps" was probably the reference?) Makes sense, but I always thought "Waitresses" when I thought of Romeo Void.

But I fell asleep before the end. I hope the gig was good and there weren't a lot of tears. sniff.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sax player welled up and had to leave, but that was somewhat to be expected. He watched the gig on video, though.

The Waitresses , YES! Totally kindred spirits to Romeo Void. Different sax player, tho'. Mars Williams played for the Waitresses (and later for the gawdawful Midnight to Midnight-era Psychedelic Furs).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

oooh i wanted to see the romeo void one... hope they rerun it soon.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Waitresses were one of the great misunderstood bands of the new wave era.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm waiting for the clownfucker/Flock of Seagulls episode.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Score, bald and clownfucking = MY EYES

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, there's a dramarama one!

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was ok. But I mean has there been a dying need to see a Berlin reunion? I'd be impressed if they reunited someone like the Smiths. Can't wait for the Extreme one, haven't had enough of "More Than Words" in my lifetime.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Its VH1 they'll re-run it 7 thousand times.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, there's a dramarama one!

Hm, interesting. Will they talk about the smack?

I'd be impressed if they reunited someone like the Smiths.

Haha! I expect they could reunite each of the bandmembers' lawyers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm done with the show. Looks like Romeo Void is the only one that isn't pathetic.

I'd like to see a Missing Persons reunion.

The rest:
A Flock Of Seagulls
Berlin
Dramarama
Extreme
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Kajagoogoo
Klymaxx
Romeo Void
Squeeze
The Alarm

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

An Adam and the Ants reunion would be nice.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(as a benefit to save the gorillas, of course)

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I tell ya that Terri Nunn looked pretty good.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll certainly watch the Alarm one. Can't say I give too much of a damn about the other bands, though. They'd score a major coup if they landed Van Halen.

"Tonight...on a very special 'Bands Reunited'...."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, is that the same Mars Williams who was in the Vandermark 5?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Berlin were OK; Romeo Void couldn't keep up with their younger selves on "Never Say Never." The juxtaposition of tempos between their present-day show and their vintage video was sad. And I felt bad for their sax player, but I thought that if anyone from the band wouldn't/couldn't do it the whole thing was off?

The histories are fairly interesting so far, but the suspense has been totally phony, at least so far: Fly me to L.A., put me up for a few days and then play two songs with my old mates? Who's going to say no, really? You think the bassist of Kajagoogoo will be too busy?

Rick Massimo, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Interested in the FGTH one, especially if they can round up the guys who actually made the record :)

d.w., Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Kajagoogoo? The reunion may well last longer than their original career.

rainman (rainman), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I tell ya that Terri Nunn looked pretty good.

Understatement

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are Dramarama on there? They never even had any HITS, did they???

I watched part of the Berlin one, but for the first 15 minutes I just assumed they were Missing Persons! I could never tell those two bands apart in the first place. (Tho I guess the MP's had fishbowls, right?)

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

>>I never consciously made the connection between "Never say Never" and Bush Tetras. ("Too Many Creeps" was probably the reference?) Makes sense, but I always thought "Waitresses" when I thought of Romeo Void.<<

So wait, did Romeo Void mention the Bush Tetras on the show? (What's weird about Romeo Void is that their "Girl in Trouble" song was actually a way bigger pop hit than "Never Say Never," if I remember right, but nobody including me remembers at all what it sounded like.)

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember! and i actually like it better than "never say never" at this point in my adult life.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Did The Alarm actually break up? I thought they just kept getting worse and worse until people quit acknowledging their existence.

earlnash, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are Dramarama on there? They never even had any HITS, did they???

Only in LA, very regional. I'm just as surprised as you!

Tho I guess the MP's had fishbowls, right?

Yup.

Did The Alarm actually break up?

Yes, and god help me I ended up seeing Mike Peters doing Alarm songs solo as an opening act a few years back. Scary.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Only in LA, very regional. I'm just as surprised as you!

LA and New Jersey!

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So wait, did Romeo Void mention the Bush Tetras on the show?

The guitarist said that Bush Tetras were the inspiration for the opening riff.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I figured Mike Peters had to have gone bald like Andre Agassi because they used to have the same haircut. That much hairspray holding hair upright cannot be good for you.

earlnash, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

LA and New Jersey!

But did they actually get steady airplay? They abandoned Jersey for LA because that's where they were actually on the radio, supposedly!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Dramarama didn't have a hit when they were gothy band like The Cult, but they had a couple that got on the radio when the record label convinced them sounding like The Black Crowes was a good idea.

earlnash, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dramarama didn't have a hit when they were gothy band like The Cult

*befuddled* You are the first person I've ever heard describe Dramarama as gothy -- so I'm intrigued but also confused.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Dramarama are the quintessence of the term "also-ran"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Squeeze? That's a pretty well-known and respected band for a show like this. I'd watch that.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

But did they actually get steady airplay? They abandoned Jersey for LA because that's where they were actually on the radio, supposedly!

As far as I know/remember "Anything, Anything" did get a fair bit of airplay on local rock/college radio. You'll have to ask my Jersey ex who was in the thick of all that while it was happening.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dramarama are the quintessence of the term "also-ran"

*cries*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it is a midwestern misunderstanding, the only person that I remember listening to Dramarama before they went boogie rock was the only girl that could be described as "gothy" in my hometown. It seemed like they were all into the paleface makeup looking thing in the tapes.

earlnash, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

They weren't so much "gothy" as "paisley-underground-wannabe", I found. Oh, and they stank. Sorry, Ned.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Glam (70s UK Bowie/Mott style) wannabe if anything, surely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I was speaking more in a sartorial context, Nedrick. I should have stated. Sonically, they just sounded like tinny, oomph-free whine rock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Pyjamarama > Bananarama > Cobo Hall Motorama > Dramarama

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Romeo Void's _Instincts_, the album w/ "A Girl in Trouble...", was just reissued on Wounded Bird records. It's great, if you haven't heard it - "Going to Neon" fits right up against the Plugz "Reel Ten" as a great mix closer. They were much better than the typical one/two-hit wonder band. Haven't heard Debora Iyall's solo work or her Knife in Water cd, but love the Romeo Void combo of her voice and the saxophone. Wish I had cable to see that VH1 show.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Terri Nunn did look fantastic.

(I'm working on a VH1 show yet to air....watch this space)

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of girls and saxophones and the '80s and stuff, why the hell aren't Quarterflash on this show???? I'd PAY to see them reunite.

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm-a gonna harden my heart.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That had the video with guys in tuxedos and flame-throwers and little midget Quarterflash singers and bulldozers and everything. It was the MOST!, I tell ya!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I see your "Harden My Heart", now running in my head, and raise you Scandal's "The Warrior".

"Shooting at the walls of heartache..."

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Bang Bang!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Quarterflash also sing "Find Another Fool (to Love You)?" Seems to me like Little Miss Quarterflash had some self-esteem problems.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, Quarterflash did that, plus the "Night Shift" theme. Re: the self-esteem problems, blame it on our NW weather. (Portland, OR band). Forgot that the singer's name was Rindy Ross. Rindy. Heh.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post: As far as I know/remember "Anything, Anything" did get a fair bit of airplay on local rock/college radio.

As I remember from my youth at the Jersey Shore, "Anything, Anything" was played all the time on Asbury Park's own WHTG 106.3 FM. Great driving song.

chules (chules), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Great driving song.

Yeah, as in driving me insane! Heh. I'll get my coat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

John Cafferty & Beaver Brown Band -- "What is it like having your career tied to a movie and band that doesn't even exist?" Even if you reform and tour, people are not going to know who you are unless you put "Eddie & the Cruisers" on the marquee.

Another band easily confused with Missing Persons-- Animotion.

Some 80s metal bands would be intertaining, as those road years have probably worn them to a nub.

earlnash, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone rememer Face to Face, as in "Ten Nine Eight -- I'm always countin' down...". They seemd rather Quarterflashesque as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not the "hardcore" Face to Face, btw.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, they should get BOTH husband-wife teams from Portland (Quarterflash AND Nu Shooz, of "I Can't Wait" fame) to reunite AT THE SAME TIME. If they knew what was good for them. Which they DON'T, obviously. Rindy did indeed sing all the songs mentioned above, all of which (especially "Hard On My Art," as Ken Tucker called in the Voice at the time) were quite worthy, but even better were the seven minute Steely Dan style seafood restaurant jazz suite about the Portland Zoo and stuff "Williams Avenue" and that song "Valerie" apparently about Rindy's lesbian affair in art school, which I bet made Marv jealous or turned him on, I'm not sure which. They both became school teachers, I think. Unless they were already school teachers in the first place. All three of their albums are really good, what with the Miami Sound Machine style suburban salsa parts and all, but the first one was still best. The fourth one, released only in Japan I believe, was a rather failed attempt at being Roxette.

And, um, speaking of Roxette....

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

A Cock Robin reunion might be cool, too, 'cause that way I could FINALLY find out what a band calling themselves Cock Robin would sound like, seeing how I don't remember ever hearing them the first time.

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Other excellent reunion ideas would include Sniff N the Tears, obviously, not to mention Flash and the Pan, and Herman Brood and his Wild Romance, and Fabulous Poodles, and of course the somewhat Quarterflashlike Night, of "Hot Summer Nights" fame. (I'm curious about Face to Face now, though; I don't remember them at all.)

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Asbury Park's own WHTG 106.3 FM

the very station that gave birth to the career of (drumroll) MATT PINFIELD! and today's "new answers" page suddenly makes sense.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone rememer Face to Face, as in "Ten Nine Eight -- I'm always countin' down...". They seemd rather Quarterflashesque as well.

great song. what else did that group do?

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Cock Robin's "When Your Heart is Weak" is right up there with Feelabeelia (sp?, sang "Killing Time"), Drop in the Gray, the Armoury Show, Wire Train, and others as immediately evoking memories of a mid-80s college radio show. KWCW, 90.5, Walla Walla, WA!

I'd vote for reuniting The Lucy Show, a Boston (?) band whose second album did well for them. Their first album has some great shoegazer pop songs.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Dramarama was the designated LA "opening band" for everyone that came through town. I saw them three times opening up for other bands.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Bands I want to see on "Bands Reunited": Translator and Wire Train

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire Train's cover of "I'll Be There" was brilliant. Is that on cd?

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Squeeze? That's a pretty well-known and respected band for a show like this. I'd watch that.

That's odd, considering they only split up 3 or 4 years ago. Of course, if they're talking about the East Side Story lineup and Paul Carrack comes walking in, I'll vomit.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe they'll reunite as UK Squeeze, and only do songs off their first (and second best) album! THAT would be cool. (They could even include songs off *Cool for Cats,* their BEST album, if they want! But anything post-1980 should be off limits, for conceptual reasons.)

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

How about "The Producers"? They were my favorite eighties band. "What's he got, that I aint got?...Got you, that what he's got.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"
Sorry, forgot those.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"She Sheila" by the Producers - LOVED that song. And heh, they're still together.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, and god help me I ended up seeing Mike Peters doing Alarm songs solo as an opening act a few years back. Scary.

even scaruier ned -- i acaught him doing the same thing, but he also mixed in a cover of "The Message". solo acoustic-like. not something that should be repeated.

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Again, not to be a stick in the mud about this, but bands like the Producers and Wire Train and Translator and the Lucy Show NEVER HAD ANY HITS (in the strict Joel Whitburn Billboard Top 40 sense of the term), which seems like it should matter in this if not all instances. (Okay, I admit it, neither did the Fabulous Poodles or Flash and the Pan maybe -- seeing how "Mirror Stars" tragically only went to #81 in 1979, and "Hey St. Peter" bizarrely climbed only to #76 the same year -- but those are, um, exceptions or something.)

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Cock Robin were entirely unlistenable.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Alarm never went top 40 either, if anybody's interested. (And besides, weren't they just no fun at all, like Big Country WITHOUT the Irish Spring commercial bagpipes? So shouldn't they STAY gone?)

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Alarm never went top 40 either

Not even "I love the feel the Rain in the Summertime"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Year Single Chart Highest Position
1986 Strength The Billboard Hot 100 No. 61
1988 Rain In The Summertime The Billboard Hot 100 No. 71
1988 Presence Of Love The Billboard Hot 100 No. 77
1989 Sold Me Down The River The Billboard Hot 100 No. 50

chuck, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Strange, I'd have figured "Rain in the Summertime" would have been a bigger hit than "Sold Me Down the River" (not that either really blazed up the charts).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm...well, there ya go, then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(And besides, weren't they just no fun at all, like Big Country WITHOUT the Irish Spring commercial bagpipes? So shouldn't they STAY gone?)

Best description of the Alarm ever!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

>>You think the bassist of Kajagoogoo will be too busy?

Actually, Nick Beggs is a seasoned veteran session player and has also done some incredible work with former Zappa sideman, Missing Persons and Duran Duran member Warren Cuccurullo. It is not as if he could be sitting around waiting for such a trivial reunion with his old band, but I am sure he is happy enough to give it a go for old times sake.

bahtology, Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

>>I watched part of the Berlin one, but for the first 15 minutes I just assumed they were Missing Persons! I could never tell those two bands apart in the first place. (Tho I guess the MP's had fishbowls, right?)

And some of the best musicians from the new wave era: drummer Bozzio, bassist O'Hearn and guitarist Cuccurullo all cut their teeth playing the toughest gig of all time, ZAPPA, so they definitely knew how to play their instruments. (some of the songwriting was suspect at times, but Bozzio often did a good job at pop tunes) Those fishbowls were merely the icing on the cake.

bahtology, Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Best description of the Alarm ever!

All too true as well. The first time I heard "Rain in the Summertime" I thought, "Oh, okay, a new U2 song."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok the irish spring crack just made me lose it at work. great.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw, this show sounds like total ass.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Missing Persons sound very distinct to my young ears, and I don't even own any of their records. The lead singer's got that quirky high pitched yelp that's kind of hard to not recognize instantly. And I do think they're leagues better than say, Berlin or Animotion, who at the most had one and a half good songs each.

But that Terri Nunn...unghhhhh [/Kate]

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw, this show sounds like total ass.

No, Anthony, that's the Good Charlotte CD you're playing in the background.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I caught the Flock of Seagulls episode last night. Mike Score's voice sounded like hell. Then at the end of the show they edited out most of the instrumental in "Space Age Love Song," which for me was always the highlight of their catalog.

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike was also wearing a Nike hat in the performance. I know he's balding and all but seriously...

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I kept expecting his hat to pop off and his glorious hawklike "attack hair" to bust loose and assault the other band members.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Score has not aged well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 January 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't realize the guitarist was so young during their first go around. Ditto on "Space Age Love Song", though -- great, great single, far superior to "I Ran", IMO.

d.w., Thursday, 22 January 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What all the Dramarama hate?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 22 January 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"Actually, Nick Beggs is a seasoned veteran session player and has also done some incredible work with former Zappa sideman, Missing Persons and Duran Duran member Warren Cuccurullo. It is not as if he could be sitting around waiting for such a trivial reunion with his old band, but I am sure he is happy enough to give it a go for old times sake."

I knew whoever I picked out of my hat as an example would turn out to, in fact, be busy and successful. Murphy's Law (not the band, the actual principle) at work.

Next question: Which, if any, band on this show is going to be so flush with nostalgia and pumped up on TV-generated applause that they actually try to get back together for real?

Rick Massimo, Thursday, 22 January 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The bass player from A Flock of Seagulls certainly seemed up for it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 January 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Very, verrrry affectionate dude. Like he took a bunch of E before he came to rehearsal. Hugs and kisses for everybody.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What all the Dramarama hate?

I AM GLAD I'M NOT ALONE HERE.

Anyway, so they dug up the original guitarist for Flock of Seagulls? That's cool...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

so they dug up the original guitarist for Flock of Seagulls? That's cool...

Yeah, it was. I had no clue he was only 15 when they first gaining fame. No wonder he freaked out and split. He said at some point in the rehearsal that he hadn't even picked up a guitar for 8 years, yet he didn't miss a note.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

They totally need to do a flock of seaneds reunion show.

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I had no clue he was only 15 when they first gaining fame.
so he didn't just LOOK like a kid? Jesus!

he hadn't even picked up a guitar for 8 years, yet he didn't miss a note.
Hey, I'm as big a FoS fan as anybody but come on, I really don't see much complexity in those parts.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I'm as big a FoS fan as anybody but come on, I really don't see much complexity in those parts.

True, yes. But when everything you play is drenched in chorus and delay, it would probably take a couple hours to re-adjust after not having played in so long. And, for all I know, it did...editors can work wonders...

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, first off that should be "Why all the Dramarama hate?"

I was at the Dramarama show this weekend, Ned, in lovely Sayreville, New Jersey.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw AFoS live back in the day and Reynolds was a pretty great guitarist, certainly the best part of the band. Glad they were able to find him.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"The bass player from A Flock of Seagulls certainly seemed up for it."

Oh yeah. Did you notice in the epilogue that he moved from France back to England after the reunion show?

Rick Massimo, Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Which, if any, band on this show is going to be so flush with nostalgia and pumped up on TV-generated applause that they actually try to get back together for real?

I noticed that Klymaxx was listed as performing at a local festival in the park deal here in Pasadena.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I noticed that Klymaxx was listed as performing at a local festival in the park deal here in Pasadena.

I think one of 'em has been touring with the name, sort of like Mike Score does with AFoS.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

..and what Terri Nunn does with Berlin.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely second the Adam and the Ants suggestion. Also, get The Vapors!

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 24 January 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Squeeze is the only one of these bands that interest me.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Why doesn't it surprise me that the only thing standing in the way of a Frankie Goes to Hollywood reunion performance was Holly Johnson? Everything he does is so calculated; from the way he speaks to the way he only comes out of hiding when he doesn't want to be forgotten. He totally strung along the other four guys and the tv audience, the fucker.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I found that Frankie GTH episode to be easily the most compelling installment so far (not least because they dangled the carrot...er...so to speak....but never delivered). I found it quite sad, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 January 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Flock of Seaguls. When they got back together, I realized that theyre all really good musicians/I actually like their music.

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 25 January 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Klymaxx episode last night, and that knocked me out. Not being very familiar with them...watching the transformation from off-stage to on-stage was amazing.

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 25 January 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ARGH WE ARE DYING TO SEE THE KLYMAXX EPISODE.

The FGTH episode made me think, "Hmm, Holly is a twat."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 January 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Flock of Seagulls one I really enjoyed, the band sounded great except for fatty score.

Holly Johnson, ruined the whole thing for me. 58 minutes of anxiously waiting and then the big let down.

Klymaxx was pretty bitchy.

Chris V (Chris V), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The Klymaxx episode had some genuine acrimony in it, which made it a bit more interesting, but I'd be severely fibbing if I told you I remember a note of their music.

What's tonight? Kajagoogoo? Hmmm...methinks I can miss that one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Your just too shy to watch it....

Chris V (Chris V), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hush, Hush!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and the shots of holly johnsons ass cheeks from 1979 or whatever didn't really do the show justice.

Chris V (Chris V), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care if they had hits or not, I want to see them try to reunite Dinosaur Jr.

mike a, Monday, 26 January 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not just aim for Dinosaur? If you're looking for acrimony that is ...

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 26 January 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

To clarify: I want to see an attempt to get Lou, J and Murph to reunite.

Or how about Guns 'n Roses? The Appetite lineup, I mean.

mike a, Monday, 26 January 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Bands I love to see them get (but they won't): Roth-era Van Halen, Cop Shoot Cop, the Ace of Spades-era Motorhead, Hugh Cornwell-era Stranglers and coax XTC to reunite with Terry Chambers (drums) and Barry Andrews (keybs) and PLAY LIVE AGAIN!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The FGTH episode made me think, "Hmm, Holly is a twat."

You're actually surprised, Dan? Was amusing/irritating that he couldn't untwist his knickers long enough to do one show. I understand that he feels the record industry screwed him royal, but there is such a thing as altruism.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

If there's ever a Second Season of this series, I suggest VH1 tries to reunite the following bands:

  • NWA*
  • Police
  • Talking Heads
  • Black Sabbath (the ORIGINAL Lineup)
  • Stone Roses

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

At least from a recent interview with Lou Barlow, the squabble between him and J Macsis is over, to an extent from them running into each other and laughing over how they came off in that Azzerad book.

earlnash, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted them to reunite the Fat Boys until I was informed that one of them has passed on.

Hell, reunite 'em anyway.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently there's something sort of cool about tonight's episode, which would otherwise suck. The band in question is Extreme, and three of the four members agree, but the fourth person not only doesn't agree to reunite/reform, but is such a bitter bastard he doesn't even want to be on camera, so the episode is only a half hour long! (All the other episodes have been an hour.) I think it's hilarious that, rather than pad it out with extra footage of the three that were game, they just cut it to half-length and said "Well, fuck it. On to the next band."

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a clip in which Gary Cherone mentioned that Nuno Bettencourt (sp?) had slept with his wife, and was still doing so. I've seen no clips of Nuno in any of the advertising, so I'll assume he's the odd man out.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

After consulting VH1's tv schedule listing for tonight, I can verify that this episode clocks in at only 30 mins.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched the Kajagoogoo one and for a band i never really cared about or for, they weren't too bad. Their story is hilarious... band kicks out lead singer because they don't like teeny bopper image and then are surprised by following lack of success.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Didn't you used to be Nick Beggs?"

Is that Jack and Kelly on the cover?

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Could be.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they should try to reunite Rick Wakeman with Yes, because it's only happened four times so far.

Joe (Joe), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Wouldn't it be funny if they tried to reunite the Velvet Underground and feigned awareness of their 90s reunion concerts? "Oh, so well, then you're *absolutely sure* you wouldn't try getting together with Lou Reed then? Just one more time?"

Joe (Joe), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Gary Cherone to VH1: "You guys have been like a nagging dog!"

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm almost glad it was only a half hour. I was getting tired of Aamer twisting the knife of "More Than Words" in each member's gut. He pretty much sabotaged hopes of a reunion from the very beginning.

Oh, and I noticed there was no longer a mention of Nuno stealing Gary's wife. Did I just imagine seeing that in one of the ads last weekend?!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, this just in: Squeeze's show on Friday is also just a half hour, so there's likely no reunion. Was there a bunch of animosity in that original line-up?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, this just in: Squeeze's show on Friday is also just a half hour, so there's likely no reunion. Was there a bunch of animosity in that original line-up?

No, they're just really boring.

(sorry, couldn't help but make the obvious joke)

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the bass player from kajagoogoo is quite good!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll be a little tough with a dead Eazy-E.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It goes without saying that they'll have to reunite the surviving members. (Ice Cube, Dr Dre, MC Ren, Yella and DOC)

Anyhow, onto the rest of my list.
Now that both David Byrne and Sting have used up their solo careers, don't you think a Talking Heads or Police comeback is the next inevitable step.
You know it'd be entertaining, now that we know that Tina Weymouth is a nutjob.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: N.W.A -- They haven't tried to do a band with a dead member yet, so I don't know why starting now seems like a good idea. There's still plenty with all living members for VH1 to approach first.

The Police already reunited at their RnR HoF induction, and it was fucking awful.

I'd rather just leave Talking Heads alone, as well.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

REUNITE THE ORIGINAL BOSTON LINEUP! Bring back SIB.

Amen to that. "We've got full rehearsal space upstairs. AND, if you don't mind wearing it, Sib...this wig here..."

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

How about the original 5 MTV veejays? They were kind of like a rock band, right?

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

They're all dead as well.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 29 January 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 29 January 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus Christ this show is more depressing than Ferry Aid.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 29 January 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

chris carter = dickface!

Oh, you know...he's a busy guy. He had to get back to playing uninterrupted Beatles sets on the radio every morning! It's not like an intern could go into the booth and hit the shuffle button...

"The FGTH episode made me think, "Hmm, Holly is a twat."

The heck with altruism, what about music?

My favorite moment of this show so far was in the Kajagoogoo episode, when the guitar player (I think it was) said that they'd tried to reunite before, but it was too much of a business wrangle. But for one night, just to play, he'd do it.

My second favorite moment was also in the Kajagoogoo episode, when Limahl, unaware that he was going to be asked to reunite, spent several minutes talking about how badly he'd been treated by the rest of the band, then was asked to reunite with them. He sighed, ran his hand through his hair and said "Yeah. Life's too short."

Kinda the point of the show right there. And clearly something Holly and Nuno haven't figured out yet.

Also, kudos to Dramarama for being the only band so far to play one of their old songs FASTER than they used to.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Was "Anything, Anything" actually a big radio hit outside of Los Angeles? Granted, I was still a kid in 1984/85, but I remember a great deal of music from the time. I don't remember ever hearing it until I bought Cinéma Vérité some time in the 90s, though.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember hearing "Anything, Anything" (and hating it) on WDRE, the local 'alternative' station at the time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I only ever knew "Last Cigarette."

I think I might've heard "Anything, Anything" before last night, but not often - it certainly wasn't the historically huge hit the show made it out to be. And I hate the song.

But still, after seeing Romeo Void and A Flock of Seagulls puff and pant their way through "Never Say Never" and "I Ran," respectively, Dramarama gets credit for playing "Anything, Anything" faster than the record.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

that dramarama drummer totally impressed me.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

UMMM ... didn't "NWA" reunite a few years ago on that USA Network show? I forget what it was called. They had Snoop in Eazy's place? There were talks of a tour but it didn't happen? Did I dream this?

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, he was very cool, and still active in music even though he wasn't in a rich and famous rock-star format.

So, did anyone see the Squeeze one? They say it premiers tonight, but they actually showed it during the day. Let's put it this way: they make the Frankie Goes to Hollywood episode look like a love-in.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

watching it now. finally saw the frankie one too -- it was a lot more civil than i expected it to be.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It's obviously edited to heighten the drama, but I'm curious as to how close to reality the "ambushes" actually are. It seems like it'd be great fun to work on the show.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's obviously edited to heighten the drama, but I'm curious as to how close to reality the "ambushes" actually are.

I wonder too, because some of this comes awfully close to stalking. And they're not shy about mentioning that after the band members decline their interviews, VH1 calls and harasses them for weeks until they cave in.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 31 January 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Which just goes to show: all rock stars should get pit bulls!

Poor Chris Difford. He looks genuinely dissapointed that the reunion didn't come off.

How nice of them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 January 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, they harass them in so much as they call them and send flowers. Of course, the artists in question probably surmise that if they don't cave-in and at least talk to them, they'll be portrayed in a poor light.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, they harass them in so much as they call them and send flowers.

I'm sure they (VH1) would give up after a while, though.

This is the last one, isn't it. The Alarm one was alright....although it was just alright. And why didn't they play "The Stand" or "Strength"? Those were bigger tunes that "68 Guns", no?

I think "Spirit Of '76" was a bigger hit than either of those. As it is, VH-1 only aired 20% of the show, the full set list went:

Declaration
Marching On
Where Were You Hiding
68 Guns
Rain In The Summertime
Sold Me Down The River
Strength
Rescue Me
Blaze of Glory

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 31 January 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No "Stand" though? I'd have left upset.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

FWIW, quite a few of the musicians interviewed (Deborah from Romeo Void, couple of the Dramarama guys, couple more from Berlin) have been posting on the VH-1.com message boards for the show. Some interesting background info on what really happened (but you have to dig through 10,000 loser posts to find them)

I remember Dramarama on 120 minutes, so that wasn't regional. But I also remember the name pretty well, and I grew up in NJ. I also remember hating that song/video, Last cigarette or whatever...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

if they do a missing persons one, it should totally turn into a q&a session about zappa -- esp. asking dale and terry what it was like doing all that smutty dialogue for thing-fish (and mary wr2 being "mary" on joe's garage).

also, ask 'em WHAT WAS UP WITH YER HAIR!?!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing I really don't quite buy about the show is Ameer's fawning sychopancy. I mean, it's one thing to go up, ambush and introduce yourself to a retired musician, but isn't it bit of a stretch to go up to the erstwhile drummer of say, Berlin or Klymaxx and say, "It's an HONOR to meet you!" I mean, it's a nice gesture, I suppose, but it seems a bit disengenuous.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, sychopHancy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Watching the Extreme one this evening (I work the night shift, and they're just showing'em every few hours back to back). Ameer just told Extreme's drummer that they were "one of the best bands of all time." Sheesh.

It's actually good that a few of these bands turned it down. The first two (Berlin and Flock) both went far too smoothly. Throwing in the odd refusal keeps the program from getting too predictable and formulaic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep tuning in hoping to see the Frankie Goes to Bitburg episode, but instead they just keep playing the Extreme and Kajagoogoo episodes over and over and over again. WTF!?
All the other bands had at least two hits and one or two decent albums between them. Extreme and Kajagoogoo are both sad, sad one hit wonders.
There. I've said it.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 31 January 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ameer just told Extreme's drummer that they were "one of the best bands of all time."
Well, telling them that they suck like a industrial grade shop vac might've had an adverse impact on their reunion.
It's strange, Ameer behaves as if he will be punished if he doesn't get these bands to reunite.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 31 January 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

One last thought before I turn the thread back over to the rest of the forum.
The FGTH episode made me think, "Hmm, Holly is a twat."
Something dawned on me. Isn't Holly Johnson suffering from a bad case of Aids? Maybe he didn't want to admit that he just doesn't have the stamina for a reunion of any size. Hmmmm.
Agree/Disagree?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 31 January 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Holly Johnson suffering from a bad case of Aids?

No, I'm pretty sure it's the good AIDS.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 31 January 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Holly Johnson suffering from a bad case of Aids?

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. I remember hearing some rumour that he wasn't allowed back in the States as a result (or some such slanderous rumour). The only possible allusion was when he first sits down with the other members and cryptically says "We're still all here!" Dunno.

He certainly doesn't look emaciated or anything.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Naked Eyes!

Another case of "it's impossible because one of the band members has passed on" -- Rob Fisher, who I believe was the keyboardist. Although IIRC he and Pete Byrne were trying to do a reunion-type thing shortly before he passed away.

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 31 January 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And Eisbar, Missing Persons reunited briefly in 2001, shortly after Duran Duran decided it would be a good idea to reunite its "Fab Five"-era lineup. They did some dates in July of that year in the L.A. area.

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 31 January 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

EBN-OZN

This may not have been the most serious suggestion to begin with, but it's another impossible reunion. (Ned Lieben died of a heart attack a few years back.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 1 February 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It goes without saying that they'll have to reunite the surviving members. (Ice Cube, Dr Dre, MC Ren, Yella and DOC)

Is it really an N.W.A reunion without Arabian Prince?

Vic Funk, Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Arabian Prince is too busy coordinating an al Qaeda cell right now and is no longer interested in entertaining American Infidel scum.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Lieben died of a heart attack a few years back.

Didn't know that. Which guy was he (blonde or brunette?) Sad.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 February 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Brunette. The other was Robert Rosen!

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 1 February 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see OMD

also Mike Score could never really sing that well. It was always so processed on the recordings.

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 1 February 2004 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

OMD would be cool. are Simple Minds still together? is there any way to get these groups back together and then only have them play songs from their first three or four albums?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 2 February 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Simple Minds is. They just toured last year.

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 2 February 2004 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

But, the original line-up?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
Season two targets were announced a couple days ago. Does anyone give a damn about seeing any of these?

--------------------

The Motels
The (English) Beat
New Kids on the Block
ABC
Haircut 100

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Heyward's got really chubby. He was on The Weakest Link 80s pop stars special thing at the weekend. He was also spectacularly stupid but I think he was just pretending.

I'd watch that, yeah.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Beat yes, the Motels yes (though I always thought of them as all about Martha). The others strictly for the funny.

Still bummin' I missed the Romeo Void episode.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ABC too classic (and classy) to be reunited, this episode will be horrible but I will be forced to watched anyway.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell yeah about The Motels!

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
New season debuts tonight. Watching the Haircut 100 episode right now (they always cheat and show the first one during the day). I have to say, I do love this show, as contrived, manipulative and formulaic as it may be. There's always that moment (when they've succesfully coaxed the band back onstage) wherein they morph magically from the present back into misty, water-colored past. Like a jackass, i have to say....it gets me. I buy it. I get all misty.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I just watched it too. I've somehow managed to go all my 30 years without ever hearing a single Haircut 100 song until just now. "Love Plus One" isn't bad at all.

Did you see Dave Wakeling mixed in the with the post-show crowd interviews?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, caught that.

What about "Favourite Shirts (boy meets girl)"? That was a big-ish hit for them, no? I remember a video of them dancing around a bowling alley with a stuffed penguin.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at the ABC show, filmed at the islington Academy about six weeks ago. Don't know when it's showing - could be any day now, I think. The set list was - and maybe the order is wrong -

Poison Arrow
Be Near Me
Tears Are Not Enough
When Smokey Sings
How To Be A Millionaire
The Look Of Love
All Of My Heart

so no surprises there.

It was hardly a reunion - Mark White and Steve Singleton pulled out of the gig, so it was just messrs Fry and David Palmer from the Lexicon line-up. The VH1 bloke (Aameer? sorry I don't have vh1) kept on and on about how it was 'the first time in 20 years, wow !!' but it felt a bit paltry seeing as how it was only two guys. Though Nick Beggs was on bass, hahha !

darren (darren), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Caught a little of the Haircut 100 one last night. Tivo'd it for tonight.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew as soon as the New Kids show was announced that there'd be no reunion. 1) Shit like that would have made the papers. 2) Donnie Wahlberg has turned into a somewhat reputable actor now, and would immediately put the kaibosh on the idea.

What I didn't expect was that no one but the two Knights would be interested.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite liked the Haircut 100 show. I thought they sounded pretty good. These shows make me incredibly happy when they actually pull through and play. The Flock of Seagulls one from last year almost brought me to tears when I heard "Space Age Love Song". And I got the chills yesterday when the sax burst in on "Love PLus One".

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm, I saw the Berlin one sometime in the summer. Hadn't even heard of the series before that. I did like, sorta, watching the Berlin reunion - without ever having paid much notice to the band in their lifetime, to be honest. But I haven't watched any other episode since...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The weird thing about "Bands Reunited" is you get emotionally invested in a lot of bands you'd never care about in the first place. Even crap like the Alarm...

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

They should've got the sax player from Romeo Void to take the place of Danny Wood in the New Kids episode.

Ed Armbruiser (Andy K), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The weird thing about "Bands Reunited" is you get emotionally invested in a lot of bands you'd never care about in the first place. Even crap like the Alarm...

That's not the weird thing about the show; it's the good thing about it. You don't have to like the band involved to see that it's about how life is short and old friends and comrades are important.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Watching the ABC one now.....sort've deceptive.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the ABC one was sort of like a metaphorical dry heave.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

More excited about the English Beat one tomorrow.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep ABC was a stinker, but they sounded good. Fry hasn't changed his hairdo one bit.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Half of the New Kids refused to be interviewed for the E! True Hollywood Story, so I don't know how they figured they would be game for a reunion.

billstevejim, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

This show will never be complete until they get Emerson, Lake & Palmer to reunite and play "Taste of My Love" from Love Beach.

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 9 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Watching the Beat one now. Very cool so far.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, another misfire. Cox & Steele not showing up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Just watched the Motes one. Once again -- who gives a rolling rat fuck abou the Motels? But as ever, it was compelling viewing with the complete re-unification of the band was very sweet.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

dave wakeling kicks major ass. i havent seen the vh1 show yet but he plays in la like every week. always so great.

big chaki (chaki), Saturday, 11 September 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Once again -- who gives a rolling rat fuck abou the Motels?

Me.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 11 September 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

LA and OC, Mr. Wakeling does. Lives down in Dana Point or something.

The recent band reunions I like are the ones that have not been featured on this show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sad that the New Kids said no, not that I expected anything else.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

New Kids said no,

Thank Christ for that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

For those who don't know, Alex is forced to watch VH1 in a Clockwork Orange-style eye-opening device.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

God I really love ABC -- I just heard "Be Near Me" at the grocery store whilst trying to choose between Wheat Thins and Triscuits. Hearing that song put me in such a great mood I bought BOTH!!!

I like ABC better than Roxy Music.

longaty, Sunday, 12 September 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Astonishing! (But I can sorta see it -- if you had said Paul Weller was superior to Roxy, I would have cried.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 September 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

If you had said Paul Weller was superior tome, I would have...concurred probably.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Longaty: "What's your reputation?"

Box of Triscuits: "Ecstasy!"

Longaty: "What's your destination?"

Box of Wheat Thins: "Next to me!"

I'd pegged ABC as being more of a Chicken-In-A-Biskit band, myself ...

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 13 September 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

So I've seen three episodes of this show, and by far the best was the first one I saw: Berlin. I don't know anything about them except for "Take My Breath Away" (and another single maybe?), but I was seriously, seriously moved by seeing them all reunited.

I watched The Beat and ABC today and was disappointed, in both shows, at the failure to get the whole band together. I liked Martin Fry's enthusiasm in the ABC episode, though. (I also liked that he sort of resembled David Lynch in his old age: I think it's the hair.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 September 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
They actually tried to reunite the Smiths?

Asthmatic Cajun (Asthmatic Cajun), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
I would love to see Face to Face (not the punk band that stole their name) reunited.

mark cohen, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

...as in "TEN...NINE...EIGHT! I'm always countin' down!"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i just finally added "10-9-8" to my itunes after finding it among some old mp3s i had filed away. GREAT song.
